A two-stage plasma catalyst system for high-throughput NOx removal was investigated. Herein, the plasma stage involved the large-volume plasma discharge of humidified gas and was carried out in a sandwich-type honeycomb monolith reactor consisting of a commercial honeycomb catalyst (50 mm high; 93 mm in diameter) located between two parallel perforated disks that formed the electrodes. The results demonstrated that, in the plasma stage, the reduction of NOx did not occur at room temperature; instead, NO was only oxidized to NO2 and n-heptane to oxygenated hydrocarbons. The oxidation of NO and n-heptane in the honeycomb plasma discharge state was largely affected by the humidity of the feed gas. Furthermore, the oxidation of NO to NO2 occurs preferably to that of n-heptane with a tendency of the NO oxidation to decrease with increasing feed gas humidity. The reason is that the generation of O3 decreases as the amount of water vapor in the feed gas increases. Compared to the catalyst alone, the two-stage plasma catalyst system increased NOx removal by 29% at a temperature of 200 °C and an energy density of 25 J/L.

This work investigated the removal of toluene using cyclic adsorption/oxidation operation in a fixed-bed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma-catalytic reactor containing Pd/ZSM-5 catalyst. The modification of ZSM-5 with Pd catalyst (2 wt %) substantially improved the adsorption capability for toluene. The catalyst adsorbing toluene was readily regenerated during the plasma-catalytic oxidation step. The synergistic effect of the catalyst promoted the toluene oxidation process as well as improved the selectivity towards CO2. As a method of reducing the energy in generating plasma, two cases (when the ground electrode was exposed to the external air and when the ground electrode was immersed in insulating oil) were compared. No micro-discharge occurred outside the ground electrode surface after oil jacketing, which prevented NOx and ozone from forming, improved energy efficiency, and promoted CO2 selectivity to 91%. The energy consumption with the oil insulation was 14.5 J/L, while that without it was 58.0 J/L. The catalyst was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).

An essential key to enhancing the specific capacity and cyclic stability of transition metal oxide materials is the hybridization of carbon compounds by binder-free methods for supercapacitors. Carbonaceous compounds shorten the electron-ion diffusion pathways due to their high active surface area and conductivity. Herein, we focus on improving the specific energy, stability, and conductivity of the electrode by the incorporation of nanosized carbon material. The integration of nano carbons from viable eco-friendly glucose with CoMoO4 enhanced the experimental specific capacity of the electrode. The self-grown CoMoO4 on a nickel foam (CMO-NF) was confirmed as the best approach after extensive optimization process by the feasible hydrothermal (HT) method. The amount of carbon deposited and the structural morphology on the fabricated CoMoO4-glucose-derived carbon (CMO-GC) electrode was varied by adjusting the concentration of glucose by the viable HT technique. Notably, the hybrid CMO-GC-2 achieved a maximum specific capacity of 851.85 C g−1 at 1 A g−1, and it is relatively higher than that of CMO-NF (301.4 C g−1). The asymmetric supercapacitor device (CMO-GC-2//AC) demonstrated excellent energy density (36.86 W h kg−1 for 152.84 W kg−1), power density (3209.35 W kg−1 for 11.19 W h kg−1), and extensive capacity retention of 87% for up to 5000 cycles. The high performance is related to the synergetic effect of EDLC and the redox reaction, with nano-architecture and well-defined morphology of the electrode material.

Metallic mirrors are now essential components of the (International Thermonuclear Experiment Reactor) ITER plasma diagnostics system. The optical properties of the first mirror (FM) in the hostile ITER environment have adverse effects due to erosion and deposition owing to high energy charge exchange of neutral (CXN) particles, UV, X-ray, and gamma radiation. Molybdenum (Mo) and rhodium (Rh) are attractive metals for the FM(s) as they can withstand the harsh conditions of the plasma environment and have better reflectivity. However, the high cost of Rh limits its use as a single material in the FM; as a result, it is deposited as a thin film over a metallic substrate. Moreover, due to the different thermal expansion of the coated materials on FM leads to weak adhesion of the thin layers thereby reducing the life of the coated mirror; this eventually leads to the deterioration of the optical properties of the diagnostic mirror. Furthermore, this phenomenon is becoming a problem concerning the stainability and reflectivity of the diagnostic mirror. This study aims to show the performance of niobium (Nb) as an interlayer between Mo and an Rh thin films deposited via DC magnetron sputtering at the deposition power of 40 W. The Mo mirrors were exposed to the high temperature and were left to cool naturally to room temperature. Rougher surfaces, larger grain sizes, and excellent adhesion were observed. The overall reflectance of the mirrors exposed to high temperature was reduced by 10–15%.

The effective removal of dilute ethylene in a novel honeycomb plasma reactor was investigated using a honeycomb catalyst (Pd/ZSM-5/monolith) sandwiched between two-perforated electrodes operating at ambient temperature. Herein, the dependence of catalyst performance on the binder fraction, catalyst preparation method, and catalyst loading was examined. Ethylene removal was carried out by a process comprising cycles of 30-min adsorption conjugated with 15-min plasma-catalytic oxidation. Interestingly, the performance of the cyclic process was superior to continuous plasma-catalytic oxidation and thermally activated catalyst in terms of energy conservation, i.e., ~36 compared to ~105 and ~300 J/L, respectively. Hence, the novel cyclic process can be considered advanced-oxidation technology that features room-temperature oxidation, offers low energy consumption, negligible hazardous by-products emissions such as NOx and O3. Moreover, the process operated under described conditions: low-pressure drop, ambient atmosphere, a mechanically stable system, and a simple reactor configuration, suggesting the practical applicability of this plasma process.

Herein, cherry flower waste-derived activated carbon (CFAC) with self-doped nitrogen is synthesized as a viable energy storage material for green and sustainable energy solutions. The activated carbon derived in this way is examined as an electric double-layer capacitance (EDLC)-type electrode material and sodium-ion battery (NIB) electrode material, and commendable performance is demonstrated for both of these energy storage applications. The specific surface area (SSA) and nitrogen content are observed to play a very delicate role in determining the charge storage ability of the CFAC, and the performance is optimized only by carefully balancing both of these properties. The optimized CFAC electrode supplied an excellent performance with a specific capacitance of 333.8 F g

The deformable electronic devices such as flexible, foldable, bendable, wearable, etc., are deemed the future of portable electronics, which could only be realized through the proper design of an energy storage unit that could power them. Herein, we report the conception of an ultrastable, binderless flexible electrode/substrate configuration that can be implemented in various energy storage applications such as supercapacitors, lithium-ion batteries, sodium-ion batteries, lithium-sulfur batteries, and alike. Firstly, the conductive carbon fabric was electrochemically deposited with nickel nanospheres; then the ZIF-67 metal-organic framework (MOF) promoted metal hydroxide nanostructures were grown over the Ni-CCF substrate. As grown nanostructures were then embedded inside the CCF through a meticulous optimization process varying the calcination temperature and gas concentrations. The metal seed embedded CCF was then coated with the hydrocarbons, the precursors of which are generally known volatile organic compounds and pollutants such as C2H4, CH4, CO2, and NH3 through the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma at atmospheric pressure and temperature. The carbonization of the final product results in the ultra-robust flexible electrode with metal-oxide nano seeds embedded CCF, coated with ~20nm nitrogen-doped carbon thin film which will be an excellent electrode material for an ultra-long life flexible energy storage system. A two-stage plasma catalyst system for high-throughput NO

A method based on the corona discharge produced by high voltage alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC) over a Pd/γ-Al2O3 catalyst supported on a honeycomb structure monolith was developed to eliminate ethyl acetate (EA) from the air at atmospheric pressure. The characteristics of the AC and DC corona discharge generated inside the honeycomb structure monolith were investigated by varying the humidity, gas hourly space velocity (GHSV), and temperature. The results showed that the DC corona discharge is more stable and easily operated at different operating conditions such as humidity, GHSV, and gas temperature compared to the AC discharge. At a given applied voltage, the EA conversion in the DC honeycomb catalyst discharge is, therefore, higher compared with that in the AC honeycomb catalyst discharge (e.g., 96% of EA conversion compared with approximately 68%, respectively, at 11.2 kV). These new results can open opportunities for wide applications of DC corona discharge combined with honeycomb catalysts to VOC treatment.

A practical-scale sandwich-type honeycomb catalyst reactor incorporating non-thermal plasma was developed for the high-throughput removal of isopropanol (IPA) from air. The Pd/γ-Al2O3/honeycomb catalyst was fabricated by coating a cordierite monolith with γ-alumina powder on which to support the palladium (Pd). The supported catalyst showed good activity and the combination of the honeycomb structure with plasma produced a uniform plasma inside the catalyst chamber. The influence of different parameters, including the energy density (SIE), humidity, initial concentration, and flow rate, on the plasma characteristics and IPA removal efficiency was investigated. The results showed that the SIE has the strongest effect on the IPA removal efficiency. The efficiency of IPA removal was 94.5% and the CO2 selectivity was 85% for an SIE of 180 J/L. Using optical emission spectroscopy, we found that the increased formation of atomic oxygen and reactive species plays an essential role in the oxidation of IPA by plasma catalysis. The main byproducts were identified by GC-MS, which indicated that acetone is the major liquid product. A plausible reaction mechanism for the plasma-catalytic oxidation of IPA is proposed based on the intermediates and byproducts.

The effect of the reactor configuration and several key parameters such as the gas temperature, humidity, and flow rate on the corona discharge plasma in honeycomb monoliths was investigated. The AC corona discharge-based plasma reactor consisted of two parallel electrodes (perforated disk/wire-mesh) placed at both ends of the honeycomb monolith. Although the wire-mesh electrode offers increased sharpness, the perforated disk electrode, where the corona discharge started at the sharp edges of the holes, produced more discharge power because of the larger effective electrode area. Loading a small amount of metal onto the monolith was found to increase the discharge power significantly. Coating the monolith with a zeolite such as ZSM-5 (Si/Al: 23.9) led to a decrease in the discharge power because of its hydrophobic nature and large surface area. The result also revealed that the operating temperature, the humidity of the feed gas, and the gas velocity were key factors affecting the discharge performance. The discharge power was inversely proportional to the temperature. On the other hand, the use of a high-velocity feed gas with high water vapor content was found to be particularly advantageous for obtaining high discharge power.

The dependence of the plasma discharge performance on the size of the honeycomb monolith in a sandwich-type honeycomb monolith plasma reactor operated under humidified air conditions was investigated. In addition, the effect of the feed gas temperature on the plasma discharge was also examined in the low-temperature range (25 °C–42 °C), which is similar to the typical temperature of the actual surrounding ambient air. The results showed that variation of the temperature significantly affects the discharge power, i.e., the discharge power decreases with increasing temperature. The results also indicated that, in the absence of the honeycomb monolith in the reactor, the plasma discharge did not occur inside the discharge zone created by two parallel perforated disks. However, when the honeycomb monolith was sandwiched between the two electrodes, the discharge developed between them because of the generated surface discharge spread through the honeycomb channels. Interestingly, a parallel relationship exists between monoliths with two different diameters in terms of their energy density and energy efficiency for O3 generation. These results suggest that the use of a monolith with a small diameter, instead of the original large commercial monolith, is sufficient when conducting research on the honeycomb discharge, as it facilitates experimental design.

Large-volume atmospheric-pressure plasma based on corona discharge was successfully generated in a sandwich-type plasma reactor by controlling the humidity of the feed gas. The reactor comprised a 5-cm-high and 9-cm-wide commercial honeycomb monolith and two perforated stainless-steel disk electrodes with 3-mm holes, which covered up both sides of the monolith. The high-voltage applied disk electrode was placed 2 ~ 6 mm away from the monolith, whereas the counter ground electrode typically touched it. The characteristics of air plasma such as power delivery, breakdown voltage, current, and impedance were found to strongly depend on the water vapor content in the feed gas as well as in the monolith, exhibiting an exponential increase of discharge power with increasing the humidity. The discharge characteristics also depended on the gas flow rate and the electrode-monolith distance. Better discharge performance was observed as the electrode was closer to the monolith, and as the air flow rate was higher. Discharge power above 30 W was achieved under the condition of gas flow rate 75 L/min, applied voltage 25 kV, and humidity 2.1%(v/v) when the high-voltage electrode was 2 mm away from the monolith, and the ground electrode kept up against it. The air plasma produced reactive species, being demonstrated by the formation of ozone at several tens of ppm, depending on specific energy input. The plasma source has potential applications in the abatements of odor, organic compounds, and NOx with high throughputs.

The adsorption and plasma-catalytic oxidation of dilute ethylene were performed in a pin-type corona discharge-coupled Pd/ZSM-5 catalyst. The catalyst has an adsorption capacity of 320.6 &mu, mol gcat-1. The catalyst was found to have two different active sites activated at around 340 and 470 &deg, C for ethylene oxidation. The removal of ethylene in the plasma catalyst was carried out by cyclic operation consisting of repetitive steps: (1) adsorption (60 min) followed by (2) plasma-catalytic oxidation (30 min). For the purpose of comparison, the removal of ethylene in the continuous plasma-catalytic oxidation mode was also examined. The ethylene adsorption performance of the catalyst was improved by the cyclic plasma-catalytic oxidation. With at least 80% of C2H4 in the feed being adsorbed, the cyclic plasma-catalytic oxidation was carried out for the total adsorption time of 8 h, whereas it occurred within 2 h of early adsorption in the case of catalyst alone. There was a slight decrease in catalyst adsorption capability with an increased number of adsorption cycles due to the incomplete release of CO2 during the plasma-catalytic oxidation step. However, the decreased rate of adsorption capacity was negligible, which is less than one percent per cycle. Since the activation temperature of all active sites of Pd/ZSM-5 for ethylene oxidation is 470 &deg, C, the specific input energy requirement by heating the feed gas in order to activate the catalyst is estimated to be 544 J/L. This value is higher than that of the continuous plasma-catalytic oxidation (450 J/L) for at least 86% ethylene conversion. Interestingly, the cyclic adsorption and plasma-catalytic oxidation of ethylene is not only a low-temperature oxidation process but also reduces energy consumption. Specifically, the input energy requirement was 225 J/L, which is half that of the continuous plasma-catalytic oxidation, however, the adsorption efficiency and conversion rate were maintained. To summarize, cyclic plasma treatment is an effective ethylene removal technique in terms of low-temperature oxidation and energy consumption.
