Search

In recent years, materials informatics, which combines data science and artificial intelligence (AI), has garnered significant attention owing to its ability to accelerate material development, reduce costs, and enhance product design. However, despite the widespread use of AI, human involvement is often limited to the initiation and oversight of machine learning processes and rarely includes more substantial roles that capitalize on human intuition or domain expertise. Consequently, true human-AI collaborations, where integrated insights can be maximized, are scarce. This study considers the problem of heat conduction in a two-dimensional nanostructure as a case study. An integrated human-AI collaboration framework is designed and used to construct a model to predict the thermal conductivity. This approach is used to determine the parameters that govern phonon transmission over the full range of frequencies and incidence angles. During operation, the self-learning entropic population annealing technique, which combines entropic sampling with a surrogate machine learning model, generates a small dataset that can be interpreted by a human. Therefore, data-efficient and global modeling is achieved, and parameters with physical interpretations are developed, which can guide nanostructural design to produce materials with specific properties. The KOTO II experiment is proposed to measure the branching ratio of the decay $K_L\to\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$ at J-PARC. With a beamline to extract long-lived neutral kaons at 5 degrees from a production target, the single event sensitivity of the decay is $8.5\times 10^{-13}$, which is much smaller than the Standard Model prediction $3\times 10^{-11}$. This allows searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model and the first discovery of the decay with a significance exceeding $5\sigma$. As the only experiment proposed in the world dedicated to rare kaon decays, KOTO II will be indispensable in the quest for a complete understanding of flavor dynamics in the quark sector. Moreover, by combining efforts from the kaon community worldwide, we plan to develop the KOTO II detector further and expand the physics reach of the experiment to include measurements of the branching ratio of the $K_L\to\pi^0\ell^+\ell^-$ decays, studies of other $K_L$ decays, and searches for dark photons, axions, and axion-like particles. In conventional architectures of superconducting quantum computers, each qubit is connected to its own control line, leading to a commensurate increase in the number of microwave lines as the system scales. Frequency-multiplexed qubit-control addresses this problem by enabling multiple qubits to share a single microwave line. However, it can cause unwanted excitation of non-target qubits, especially when the detuning between qubits is smaller than the pulse bandwidth. Here, we propose a selective-excitation-pulse (SEP) technique that suppresses unwanted excitations by shaping a drive pulse to create null points at non-target qubit frequencies. In a proof-of-concept experiment with three fixed-frequency transmon qubits, we demonstrate that the SEP technique achieves single-qubit gate fidelities comparable to those obtained with conventional Gaussian pulses while effectively suppressing unwanted excitations in non-target qubits. These results highlight the SEP technique as a promising tool for enhancing frequency-multiplexed qubit-control.

We introduce a lattice dynamics package which calculates elastic, thermodynamic and thermal transport properties of crystalline materials from data on their force and potential energy as a function of atomic positions. The data can come from density functional theory (DFT) calculations or classical molecular dynamics runs performed in a supercell. First, the model potential parameters, which are anharmonic force constants are extracted from the latter runs. Then, once the anharmonic model is defined, thermal conductivity and equilibrium properties at finite temperatures can be computed using lattice dynamics, Boltzmann transport theories, and a variational principle respectively. In addition, the software calculates the mechanical properties such as elastic tensor, Gruneisen parameters and the thermal expansion coefficient within the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA). Phonons, elastic constants and thermodynamic properties results applied to the germanium crystal will be illustrated. The Tibet AS$\gamma$ experiment successfully detected sub-PeV $\gamma$-rays from the Crab nebula using a Surface Array and underground muon detector. Considering this, we are building in Bolivia a new experiment to explore the Southern Hemisphere, looking for the origins of cosmic rays in our Galaxy. The name of this project is Andes Large area PArticle detector for Cosmic ray physics and Astronomy (ALPACA). A prototype array called ALPAQUITA, with $1/4$ the total area of the full ALPACA, started observations in September $2022$. Silicon Photonics-based AI Accelerators (SPAAs) have been considered as promising AI accelerators achieving high energy efficiency and low latency. While many researchers focus on improving SPAAs' energy efficiency and latency, their physical security has not been sufficiently studied. This paper first proposes a threat of thermal fault injection attacks on SPAAs based on Vector-Matrix Multipliers (VMMs) utilizing Mach-Zhender Interferometers. This paper then proposes SecONN, an optical neural network framework that is capable of not only inferences but also concurrent detection of the attacks. In addition, this paper introduces a concept of Wavelength Division Perturbation (WDP) where wavelength dependent VMM results are utilized to increase detection accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves 88.7% attack-caused average misprediction recall.

We performed a search for the $K_L \to \pi^{0} \nu \bar{\nu}$ decay using the data taken in 2021 at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. With newly installed counters and new analysis method, the expected background was suppressed to $0.252\pm0.055_{\mathrm{stat}}$$^{+0.052}_{-0.067}$$_{\mathrm{syst}}$. With a single event sensitivity of $(9.33 \pm 0.06_{\rm stat} \pm 0.84_{\rm syst})\times 10^{-10}$, no events were observed in the signal region. An upper limit on the branching fraction for the decay was set to be $2.2\times10^{-9}$ at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), which improved the previous upper limit from KOTO by a factor of 1.4. With the same data, a search for $K_L \to \pi^{0} X^{0}$ was also performed, where $X^{0}$ is an invisible boson with a mass ranging from 1 MeV/$c^{2}$ to 260 MeV/$c^{2}$. For $X^{0}$ with a mass of 135 MeV/$c^{2}$, an upper limit on the branching fraction of $K_L \to \pi^{0} X^{0}$ was set to be $1.6\times10^{-9}$ at the 90% C.L., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; published version, the last sentence in the section of "Conclusion and prospects" was modified

Birds exhibit a variety of flight styles, primarily classified as flapping, which is characterized by rapid up-and-down wing movements, and soaring, which involves gliding with wings outstretched. Each species usually performs specific flight styles, and this has been argued in terms of morphological and physiological adaptation. However, it remains a challenge to evaluate the contribution of each factor to the difference in flight styles. In this study, using phenotypic data from 635 migratory bird species, such as body mass, wing length, and breeding periods, we quantified the relative importance of each feature using Feature Importance and SHAP values, and used them to construct weighted L1 distance matrices and construct NJ trees. Comparison with traditional phylogenetic logistic regression revealed similarity in top-ranked features, but also differences in overall weight distributions and clustering patterns in NJ trees. Our results highlight the complexity of constructing a biologically useful distance matrix from correlated phenotypic features, while the complementary nature of these weighting methods suggests the potential utility of multi-faceted approaches to assessing feature contributions., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

In modern materials science, effective and high-volume data management across leading-edge experimental facilities and world-class supercomputers is indispensable for cutting-edge research. However, existing integrated systems that handle data from these resources have primarily focused just on smaller-scale cross-institutional or single-domain operations. As a result, they often lack the scalability, efficiency, agility, and interdisciplinarity, needed for handling substantial volumes of data from various researchers. In this paper, we introduce ARIM-mdx data system, aiming at a nationwide data platform for materials science in Japan. Currently in its trial phase, the platform has been involving 11 universities and institutes all over Japan, and it is utilized by over 800 researchers from around 140 organizations in academia and industry, being intended to gradually expand its reach. The ARIM-mdx data system, as a pioneering nationwide data platform, has the potential to contribute to the creation of new research communities and accelerate innovations., Comment: IEEE BigData 2024, to appear. The intensity spectra recovered from the spectroscopic photographic plates were compared with the CCD spectra, and we found the difference between the two was 2.5%.The measurements were taken using a commercial flatbed scanner instead of a microdensitometer. The results indicate that the following two statements are inaccurate: (1) Correct measurement of spectroscopic plates requires a microdensitometer, and a commercial flatbed scanner is insufficient; (2) The spectrophotometric accuracy of spectroscopic plate is approximately 10% accurate. These results will encourage the creation and publication of a digital archive of spectroscopic plates. This paper presents the measurement of spectroscopic plates, the method of recovering intensity spectra from photographic density spectra, the results of comparison with CCD spectra, and discusses the causes of the high accuracy spectra obtained with a commercial flatbed scanner.

The Tamm structures show high quality (Q) factor property with simple photonic Bragg reflectors composed of alternative high/low refractive index layers and metal reflectors. However, the Q-factor of Tamm structures is inherently limited by the periodic constraints and fixed thicknesses of the Bragg reflector pairs. Removing periodic constraints and adopting aperiodic designs can lead to significantly higher Q-factors. Nevertheless, to fully exploit the potential of Tamm structures, it is essential to thoroughly explore the extensive search space introduced by these aperiodic designs. Herein, we introduce a novel approach that utilizes the quantum-inspired classical annealer combined with a factorization machine to facilitate the design of photonic Bragg reflectors with the aim of achieving ultrahigh Q-factor properties. Our investigation begins by establishing the effectiveness of global optimization in a 15-bit problem setting, showcasing a remarkable efficiency improvement of nearly one order of magnitude compared to random search strategies. Subsequently, we expand our analysis to a 20-bit problem, demonstrating comparable efficiency to state-of-the-art Bayesian optimization methods. Moreover, the proposed method proves its capability in handling extremely large search spaces, exemplified by a 40-bit problem, where we successfully uncover a Tamm structure design exhibiting an extraordinary ultrahigh Q-factor surpassing millions. The designed aperiodic Tamm structure exhibits exceptional high localization and enhancement of electric field, and the power loss is concentrated in the low loss dielectric layer. Hence, the decay rate of power dissipation significantly decreases and light-matter interaction time increases, resulting in ultrahigh Q-factor.

During oscillatory wetting, a phase retardation emerges between contact angle variation and contact line velocity, presenting as a hysteresis loop in their correlation -- an effect we term dynamic hysteresis. This phenomenon is found to be tunable by modifying the surface with different molecular layers. A comparative analysis of dynamic hysteresis, static hysteresis, and contact line friction coefficients across diverse substrates reveals that dynamic hysteresis is not a result of dissipative effects but is instead proportionally linked to the flexibility of the grafted layer on the surface. In the quest for appropriate conditions to model oscillatory contact line motion, we identify the generalized Hocking's linear law and modified Generalized Navier Boundary Condition (GNBC) as alternative options for predicting realistic dynamic hysteresis.

A muon-flux measurement behind the beam dump of the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility was performed with a compact muon detector that can be inserted into a vertical observing hole with 81 mm in diameter which was dug underground. The detector consists of 12 plastic scintillation strips with a length of 80 mm each, which are arranged with cylindrical shape and contained inside an aluminum housing with an outer diameter of 75 mm. A silicon photomultiplier is coupled to the end of each strip to collect the scintillating light. The flux of the muons penetrating the beam dump was scanned vertically at intervals of 0.5 m, showing a wide distribution with a maximum at the beam level. The muon flux was consistent with the expectation from a Monte-Carlo simulation at more than 1 m away from the beam axis, which is expected to be used for signal-loss evaluation in the future KOTO II experiment for measuring rare kaon decays. SiC is a promising substrate for Si-on-insulator (SOI) wafers for efficient thermal management owing to its high thermal conductivity and large bandgap. However, fabricating a Si device layer on a SiC substrate with a high and uniform thermal-boundary conductance (TBC) at the wafer scale is challenging. In this study, a 4-inch Si-on-SiC wafer was fabricated using a room-temperature surface-activated bonding method, and the TBC was measured using the time-domain thermoreflectance (TDTR) method. The obtained TBC was 109 MW/m2K in the as-bonded sample, improving to 293 MW/m2K after annealing at 750 oC, representing a 78% increase compared to previously reported values for a Si-SiC interface formed by bonding methods. Such enhancement is attributed to the absence of an oxide layer at the interface. Furthermore, we assessed the actual spatial distribution of the TBC in the SOI system by combining the TDTR mapping with a mathematical model to remove the influence of random errors in the experiment. The spatial distributions before and after annealing were 7% and 17%, respectively. Such variation highlights the need to consider the TBC distribution when designing thermal management systems.

Girstmair found a surprising relation between the relative class number of $M$ and the digits of $1/p$ in base $g$. In this paper, we consider an analogue of Girstmair's formula in function fields. Suppose that $P \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is monic irreducible and $G \in \mathbb{F}_q[T]$ is a primitive root modulo $P$. Let $L$ be an extension field of $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ contained in the $P$-th cyclotomic function field. The goal of this paper is to give relations between the plus and minus parts of the divisor class number of $L$ and the digits of $1/P$ in base $G$.

Thermal boundary resistance (TBR) in semiconductor-on-diamond structure bottlenecks efficient heat dissipation in electronic devices. In this study, to reduce the TBR between GaN and diamond, surface-activated bonding with a hybrid SiOx-Ar ion source was applied to achieve an ultrathin interfacial layer. The simultaneous surface activation and slow deposition of the SiOx binder layer enabled precise control over layer thickness (2.5-5.3 nm) and formation of an amorphous heterogeneous nanostructure comprising a SiOx region between two inter-diffusion regions. Crucially, the 2.5-nm-thick interfacial layer achieved a TBR of 8.3 m2-W/GW, a record low for direct-bonded GaN/diamond interface. A remarkable feature is that the TBR is extremely sensitive to the interfacial thickness; rapidly increasing to 34 m2-K/GW on doubling the thickness to 5.3 nm. Theoretical analysis revealed the origin of this increase: a diamond/SiOx interdiffusion layer extend the vibrational frequency, far-exceeding that of crystalline diamond, which increases the lattice vibrational mismatch and suppresses phonon transmission.

This paper proposes a cost-effective architecture for an RF pulse generator for superconducting qubits. Most existing works use arbitrary waveform generators (AWGs) that require both a large amount of high-bandwidth memories and high-performance analog circuits to achieve the highest gate fidelity with an optimized RF pulse waveform. The proposed pulse generator architecture significantly simplifies both the generator circuit and the waveform of the RF pulse to a cost-aware square pulses. This architecture eliminates the requirement for power- and cost-intensive AWG, a major obstacle in realizing scalable quantum computers. Additionally, this paper proposes a process to optimize pulse waveforms to maximize fidelity of gate operations for single and multiple qubits. Quantum dynamics simulation of transmon qubits, wherein the state of system evolves with time, demonstrates that our pulse generator can achieve practically the same gate fidelity as ideal RF pulses, while substantially reducing the performance requirements of memory and analog circuits.

Thermal conductivity, a fundamental parameter characterizing thermal transport in solids, is typically determined by electron and phonon transport. Although other transport properties including electrical conductivity and thermoelectric conversion coefficients have material-specific values, it is known that thermal conductivity can be modulated artificially via phonon engineering techniques. Here, we demonstrate another way of artificially modulating the heat conduction in solids: magnonic thermal transport engineering. The time-domain thermoreflectance measurements using ferromagnetic metal/insulator junction systems reveal that the thermal conductivity of the ferromagnetic metals and interfacial thermal conductance vary significantly depending on the spatial distribution of nonequilibrium spin currents. Systematic measurements of the thermal transport properties with changing the boundary conditions for spin currents show that the observed thermal transport modulation stems from magnon origin. This observation unveils that magnons significantly contribute to the heat conduction even in ferromagnetic metals at room temperature, upsetting the conventional wisdom that the thermal conductivity mediated by magnons is very small in metals except at low temperatures. The magnonic thermal transport engineering offers a new principle and method for active thermal management.

Imaging antiferromagnetic 180{\deg} domains with actively controlled visibility is vital for both fundamental science and sophisticated applications. While optical second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a well-known technique for distinguishing such domains in non-centrosymmetric antiferromagnets, a general material-based strategy to control domain contrast remains elusive. Using van der Waals antiferromagnet MnPS$_3$ as a proof of concept, we demonstrate the tuning of nonreciprocity-induced domain contrast in SHG through applying an in-plane electric field that transforms the magnetic point group to its unitary subgroup. The interference among intrinsic electric-dipole, magnetic-dipole, and field-induced electric-dipole transitions, each carrying distinct characters under space-inversion ($\mathcal{P}$) and time-reversal ($\mathcal{T}$) operations, enables large tuning of domain contrast and nonreciprocity in a broad spectral range. This strategy, generically applicable to systems characterized by $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric magnetic groups with a polar unitary subgroup, offers a path to fast electrical modulation of nonlinear nonreciprocal photonic behaviors using antiferromagnets.

In two-dimensional (2D) spin systems, the augmentation of spin fluctuations gives rise to quasi-long-range order; however, how they manifest in spin transport remains unclear. Here we investigate the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in a quasi-2D antiferromagnet, BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$, which has been reported to exhibit the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition owing to its distinct 2D nature. We found that the SSE in Pt / BaNi$_2$V$_2$O$_8$ persists well above the N\'eel temperature, significantly different from the behavior of 3D ordered magnets. Antiferromagnets have attracted extensive interest as platforms for nanoscale spintronic devices owing to ultrafast spin dynamics and lack of a stray field. One of the crucial missing pieces in antiferromagnets is a quantum-mechanical electric field known as an emergent electric field, which has been observed for the motion of ferromagnetic spin texture. Since this phenomenon allows for the development of novel spintronic devices such as quantum inductors, its identification in antiferromagnets is vital for developing nanoscale spintronic devices. Here, we demonstrate that the motion of antiferromagnetic spin textures generates an emergent electric field. In a room-temperature antiferromagnet FeSn2, we observed large current-nonlinear responses in the imaginary part of the complex impedance at and well above room temperature. This signal is attributed to an emergent electric field resulting from the nonadiabatic electron spin dynamics during the current-induced motion of antiferromagnetic domain walls. Notably, the observed electric response is strongly enhanced as the sample size decreases and robust against magnetic fields. Detailed measurements of the spectral structure of cosmic-ray electrons and positrons from 10.6 GeV to 7.5 TeV are presented from over 7 years of observations with the CALorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) on the International Space Station. Because of the excellent energy resolution (a few percent above 10 GeV) and the outstanding e/p separation (10$^5$), CALET provides optimal performance for a detailed search of structures in the energy spectrum. The analysis uses data up to the end of 2022, and the statistics of observed electron candidates has increased more than 3 times since the last publication in 2018. By adopting an updated boosted decision tree analysis, a sufficient proton rejection power up to 7.5 TeV is achieved, with a residual proton contamination less than 10%. The observed energy spectrum becomes gradually harder in the lower energy region from around 30 GeV, consistently with AMS-02, but from 300 to 600 GeV it is considerably softer than the spectra measured by DAMPE and Fermi-LAT. At high energies, the spectrum presents a sharp break around 1 TeV, with a spectral index change from -3.15 to -3.91, and a broken power law fitting the data in the energy range from 30 GeV to 4.8 TeV better than a single power law with 6.9 sigma significance, which is compatible with the DAMPE results. The break is consistent with the expected effects of radiation loss during the propagation from distant sources (except the highest energy bin). We have fitted the spectrum with a model consistent with the positron flux measured by AMS-02 below 1 TeV and interpreted the electron + positron spectrum with possible contributions from pulsars and nearby sources. Kaon physics is at a turning point -- while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. We present two analysis techniques for distinguishing background events induced by neutrons from photon signal events in the search for the rare $K^0_L\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$ decay at the J-PARC KOTO experiment. These techniques employed a deep convolutional neural network and Fourier frequency analysis to discriminate neutrons from photons, based on their variations in cluster shape and pulse shape, in the electromagnetic calorimeter made of undoped CsI. The results effectively suppressed the neutron background by a factor of $5.6\times10^5$, while maintaining the efficiency of $K^0_L\rightarrow\pi^0\nu\bar{\nu}$ at $70\%$., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

Gamma rays from HESS J1849$-$000, a middle-aged TeV pulsar wind nebula (PWN), are observed by the Tibet air shower array and the muon detector array. The detection significance of gamma rays reaches $4.0\, \sigma$ and $4.4\, \sigma$ levels above 25 TeV and 100 TeV, respectively, in units of Gaussian standard deviation $\sigma$. The energy spectrum measured between $40\, {\rm TeV} < E < 320\, {\rm TeV}$ for the first time is described with a simple power-law function of ${\rm d}N/{\rm d}E = (2.86 \pm 1.44) \times 10^{-16}(E/40\, {\rm TeV})^{-2.24 \pm 0.41}\, {\rm TeV}^{-1}\, {\rm cm}^{-2}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$. The gamma-ray energy spectrum from the sub-TeV ($E < 1\, {\rm TeV}$) to sub-PeV ($100\, {\rm TeV} < E < 1\, {\rm PeV}$) ranges including the results of previous studies can be modeled with the leptonic scenario, inverse Compton scattering by high-energy electrons accelerated by the PWN of PSR J1849$-$0001. On the other hand, the gamma-ray energy spectrum can also be modeled with the hadronic scenario in which gamma rays are generated from the decay of neutral pions produced by collisions between accelerated cosmic-ray protons and the ambient molecular cloud found in the gamma-ray emitting region. The cutoff energy of cosmic-ray protons $E_{\rm p\, cut}$, cut is estimated at ${\rm log}_{10}(E_{\rm p,\, cut}/{\rm TeV}) = 3.73^{+2.98}_{-0.66}$, suggesting that protons are accelerated up to the PeV energy range.
