7. Randomized controlled trial investigating the effect of an acrylic-based resilient liner on perceived chewing ability in edentulous patients wearing mandibular complete dentures.

Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of an acrylic-based resilient liner (ARL) on perceived chewing ability in patients using mandibular complete dentures compared with that of patients using mandibular complete dentures with a conventional acrylic resin (CAR).Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted at two centers from April 2004 to July 2006. Seventy-four subjects were randomly allocated to either the ARL or CAR group using a random permuted block method after obtaining written informed consent. A valid questionnaire listing 35 foods was used to evaluate the subjects' perceived chewing ability of each item, assessed according to the following scale: 0=cannot eat, 1=can eat with difficulty, and 2=can eat easily. If subjects did not eat the food because they disliked it or had not eaten it since first wearing dentures, they filled in a triangle or square, respectively. These figures were treated as a 0 during analysis.Results: No significant differences were observed between the ARL and CAR groups. The perceived chewing ability of subjects with new complete dentures was significantly higher than that of those with their old complete dentures. The duration of edentulism was positively associated with perceived chewing ability.Conclusions: An ARL applied to mandibular complete dentures has no significant impact on the perceived chewing ability of edentulous patients in comparison to a CAR. 8. Randomized controlled clinical trial for verifying the effect of silicone-based resilient denture liner on the masticatory function of complete denture wearers.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether application of permanent silicone-based resilient denture liner (SR) to mandibular complete dentures significantly improves patients' masticatory ability compared to conventional heat-activated acrylic resin (AR). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight edentulous patients were randomly placed into 1 of 2 crossover groups (AR-SR/SR-AR) by using a random permuted block within strata method. The AR-SR group received AR denture treatments followed by SR denture treatments. The SR-AR group received treatments in the reverse sequence. The outcomes were classified by matiscatory performance, mandibular movement, electromyographic activity, and maximum occlusal force. RESULTS: No significant differences were observed in any of the baseline characteristic measurements between groups. SR denture wearers exhibited significantly higher masticatory performance than AR denture wearers. SR denture wearers exhibited a longer early-stage occluding period than AR denture wearers. There were no differences in electromyographic activity between the AR and SR groups. There were no significant differences in maximum occlusal force between the AR and SR groups. CONCLUSION: This study showed that the application of SR to mandibular complete dentures resulted in significant improvements to the patients' masticatory ability compared to AR. 9. Prospective clinical trial comparing lingualized occlusion to bilateral balanced occlusion in complete dentures: a pilot study.

Abstract

PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective comparative trial was to evaluate whether patients treated with complete dentures with lingualized occlusion (LO) exhibited more positive results than patients treated with complete dentures with bilaterally balanced occlusion (BBO). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight completely edentulous patients, ranging in age from 60 to 82 years (mean age 70.9), consented in writing to be participants in this trial. The first 14 patients enrolled in the study protocol were treated with complete dentures with LO, and the next 14 patients were treated with complete dentures with BBO. Baseline characteristics were measured prior to the trial. Main outcome variables involved subjective outcomes of general satisfaction, ability to masticate, and stability and retention of the prostheses; these were quantified with a 100-mm visual analog scale. Objective outcomes were masticatory performance and the number of adjustments. Statistical assessments of the 2 groups were compared using multiple linear regression analysis. The baseline characteristics were analyzed by Student t test and chi-square test. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the groups at baseline. The height of the alveolar ridge exhibited significant correlations with masticatory performance (P = .02). The occlusal scheme exhibited a significant correlation with only the patient's retention satisfaction rating (P = .03). CONCLUSION: Despite limitations of this study attributed to the small sample size and lack of randomization, this pilot study found that edentulous patients fitted with complete dentures with LO experienced and expressed greater satisfaction with their denture retention. Abstract

SUMMARYThe NOD mouse has been used to explore the many features of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) that is caused by the destruction of insulin-producing β cells in the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. Self-reactive T cells have been considered to mediate IDDM in the NOD mouse, and antigen-presenting cells like DC and macrophages are expected to be involved in the processes from their role in generating regulatory or effector T cells. The present study shows that transfer of IFN-γ-stimulated DC of the NOD or ICR mouse into the NOD mouse did not accelerate IDDM onset but afforded long-lasting protection against clinical and histological signs of IDDM in the recipient mice. The anti-diabetogenic ability was unique to IFN-γ-stimulated DC when compared with unstimulated DC. A considerable proportion of the injected IFN-γ-stimulated DC was demonstrated to migrate into the pancreas and its associated lymphoid tissues, suggesting the DC exert their anti-diabetogenic effects there. These findings suggest that development of autoimmune diabetes in the NOD mouse is under the control of DC, and that IDDM onset could be controlled by appropriately manipulating DC systems in vivo, which may open the gate for the therapeutic application of ex vivo-conditioned DC to human IDDM.

Abstract

Effects of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rhG-CSF) against severe infections in cyclophosphamide (CY)-induced neutropenic mice were investigated by its single use or by its combination with cephem antibiotics. Treatment with rhG-CSF increased the number of peripheral blood leucocytes and strikingly shortened the duration of the neutropenic state. Most of the regained population in the peripheral blood leucocytes were neutrophils. Functions of neutrophils, such as phagocytic activity, superoxide release, and expression of Mac-1 molecules, were remarkably enhanced by administration of rhG-CSF. When rhG-CSF was administered to CY induced neutropenic mice before infection, protective effects against various kinds of bacteria were remarkable. On the other hand, such remarkable effects were not observed when rhG-CSF was administered after infections. However, even in the case of post-infectious treatment, a combination therapy of rhG-CSF with cephem antibiotics, particularly with Cefodizime (CDZM), showed a significant improvement in the survival rate and a decrease in the number of viable bacteria in the liver. These results suggest that a combination therapy of rhG-CSF with cephem antibiotics, especially with CDZM. is an efficient regime against severe infections in patients with neutropenia induced by a heavy anti-tumour chemotherapy. 42. Effect of apolipoprotein C-II on the temperature dependence of lipoprotein lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholines. A hydrophobic model for the mechanism.

Abstract

The lipoprotein lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of diacylphosphatidylcholines (PC) in mixed micelles of Triton X-100/PC was studied as a function of temperature in the presence and absence of apolipoprotein C-II (apo-C-II), the activator protein for lipoprotein lipase. Dilauroyl-, dimyristoyl-, dipalmitoyl-, and distearoyl-phosphatidylcholine (di-C12-PC, di-C14-PC, di-C16-PC, and di-C18-PC, respectively) were used as substrates. No systematic relationship between substrate fatty acyl chain length and either the rates of the activation energies for hydrolysis in the presence or absence of apo-C-II was observed. However, there was a linear relationship between fatty acyl chain length and both the logarithm of the activation factor (the ratio of enzyme activity with apo-C-II to that without apo-C-II) and the difference in activation energy in the presence and absence of apo-C-II. These relationships were not the result of an alteration in the physical form of the substrate, since a mixture of di-C14-PC and di-C16-PC gave activation factors for each PC which were the same as those obtained for each individual lipid. From the temperature dependence of the activation factor, thermodynamic functions of the apo-C-II-induced change in the reaction pathway were calculated. The free energy of activation decreased linearly with increasing chain length as the result of a linear increase in activation entropy which more than offset the unfavorable increase in activation enthalpy. We propose that the apo-C-II-mediated increase in the rate of the lipoprotein lipase-catalyzed hydrolysis of phosphatidylcholine is associated with transfer of a fatty acyl chain of the substrate or product to a more hydrophobic environment within the transition state complex.

Abstract

Standards for the measurement procedures of nitrogen concentration in CZ silicon crystals were established for infrared absorption spectroscopy (IR), secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and charged particle activation analysis (CPAA) for concentration above 1x1014 atoms/cm3.Good agreement was obtained between the laboratory within the same method and between the three methods. Conversion coefficient from (weighted sum of) absorption coefficients to nitrogen concentration agreed well with the previous one.
