Ram pressure stripping is perhaps the most efficient mechanism for removing gas and quenching galaxies in dense environments as they move through the intergalactic medium. Extreme examples of on-going ram pressure stripping are known as jellyfish galaxies, characterized by a tail of stripped material that can be directly observed in multiple wavelengths. Using the largest homogeneous broad-band optical jellyfish candidate sample in local clusters known to date, we measure the angle between the direction of the tails visible in the galaxies, and the direction towards the host cluster center. We find that $33\%$ of the galaxy tails point away from the cluster center, $18\%$ point towards the cluster center, and $49\%$ point elsewhere. Moreover, we find stronger signatures of ram pressure stripping happening on galaxies with a tail pointing away and towards the cluster center, and larger velocity dispersion profiles for galaxies with tails pointing away. These results are consistent with a scenario where ram pressure stripping has a stronger effect for galaxies following radial orbits on first infall. The results also suggest that in many cases, radially infalling galaxies are able to retain their tails after pericenter and continue to experience significant on-going ram pressure stripping. We further constrain the lifespan of the optical tails from the moment they first appear to the moment they disappear, by comparing the observed tail directions with matched N-body simulations through Bayesian parameter estimation. We obtain that galaxy tails appear for the first time at $\sim 1.16$ R$_{200}$ and disappear $\sim660$ Myr after pericenter., Comment: 19 pages, 17 figures

During cluster assembly, a cluster's virialization process leaves behind signatures that can provide information on its dynamical state. However, no clear consensus yet exists on the best way to achieve this. Therefore, we attempt to derive improved recipes for classifying the dynamical state of clusters in observations using cosmological simulations. Cluster halo mass and their subhalos' mass are used to $ 10^{14}M_{\odot} h^{-1}$ and $10^{10}M_{\odot} h^{-1}$ to calculate five independent dynamical state indicators. We experiment with recipes by combining two to four indicators for detecting specific merger stages like recent and ancient mergers. These recipes are made by plotting merging clusters and a control sample of relaxed clusters in multiple indicators parameter space, and then applying a rotation matrix method to derive the best way to separate mergers from the control sample. The success of the recipe is quantified using the success rate and the overlap percentage of the merger and control histograms along the newly rotated $x$-axis. This provides us with recipes using different numbers of combined indicators and for different merger stage. Among the recipes, the stellar mass gap and center offset are the first and second most dominant of the indicators, and using more indicators improves the effectiveness of the recipe. In my previous reanalysis of the local star-forming galaxies observed in the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) pilot survey, I reported that the overestimation of E(B - V), hence the star formation rate (SFR), undermined the claim of new galaxy population discovery in the original study. Herein, I re-examine whether the E(B - V) overestimation problem can be alleviated in the Bayesian parameter estimation framework by adopting scientifically motivated new priors. I modelled the emission-line fluxes of galaxies using the strong-line method and four model parameters-metallicity 12 + log (O/H), nebula emission-line colour excess E(B - V), intrinsic [O III] $\lambda$5007 line flux and intrinsic [N II] $\lambda$6584 line flux. Based on mock-data tests, I found that all input values can be recovered within and around the 1-$\sigma$ credible interval by adopting suitable priors for the intrinsic [O III] $\lambda$5007 and [N II] $\lambda$6584 line fluxes: the inverse gamma distribution reflecting the logical constraint that an intrinsic emission-line flux must exceed the observed (reddened) emission-line flux. The mock-data tests were performed for two metallicity calibrations, three colour excess input values [E(B - V) = 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5] and two metallicity input values [12 + log (O/H) = 8.0 and 8.5]. I also found that the new prior can diminish the SFR overestimation eightfold. We present a new approach to observationally constrain where the tails of Jellyfish (JF) galaxies in groups and clusters first appear and how long they remain visible with respect to the moment of their orbital pericenter. This is accomplished by measuring the distribution of their tail directions with respect to their host's center, and their distribution in a projected velocity-radius phase-diagram. We then model these observed distributions using a fast and flexible approach where JF tails are painted onto dark matter halos according to a simple parameterised prescription, and perform a Bayesian analysis to estimate the parameters. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach using observational mocks, and then apply it to a known observational sample of 106 JF galaxies with radio continuum tails located inside 68 hosts such as groups and clusters. We find that, typically, the radio continuum tails become visible on first infall when the galaxy reaches roughly three quarters of r$_{200}$, and the tails remain visible for a few hundred Myr after pericenter passage. Lower mass galaxies in more massive hosts tend to form visible tails further out and their tails disappear more quickly after pericenter. We argue that this indicates they are more sensitive to ram pressure stripping. I have reanalyzed the data obtained for local ($z<0.15$) star-forming galaxies during the pilot survey for the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX)---called the HETDEX Pilot Survey (HPS)---which uses an integral-field-unit spectrograph and covers $\sim3500-5800$ $\unicode{x212B}$ at $\sim5$ $\unicode{x212B}$ resolution. I have newly determined the gas metallicities, $12 + \text{log(O/H)}$, following the Bayesian analysis scheme of the previous study, but dealing carefully with the uncertainty of strong-line calibration, performing reproducibility tests with mock data, and monitoring the convergence of the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampling. From the mock-data tests, I found that the nebular emission-line color excess $E(B-V)$ can be overestimated by as much as 2-$\sigma$ or more, although the metallicity can recover the input value to within 1-$\sigma$. The new metallicity estimates on the HPS data are from well-converged MCMC samples (effective sample sizes $>$ 2000), and they are higher than the previous estimates by $\sim$2-$\sigma$. Using the HPS data, I also showed that the MCMC sampling can have the statistical accuracy as poor as the one near the iteration start if done without convergence monitoring. The overestimation of $E(B-V)$ indicates the overestimation of the star-formation rates (SFRs) in the previous study, which can be as much as a factor of five. This finding undermines the previous suggestion of a hitherto-unknown galaxy population based on the locations of galaxies in the mass-SFR plane. I found that the independent determination of $E(B-V)$ using either H${\beta}$-H${\gamma}$ or H${\alpha}$-H${\beta}$ line pair is ideal for the analysis of forthcoming HETDEX data, but it requires additional cost., Comment: 19 pages, 15 figures, MNRAS in press, online supplementary data included in the source file

We have revisited the target EON_10.477_41.954 in order to determine more accurately the uncertainties in the model parameters that are important for target classification (i.e., galaxies with or without substantial extraplanar dust). We performed a Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis for the fifteen parameters of the three-dimensional radiative-transfer galaxy model we used previously for target classification. To investigate the convergence of the MCMC sampling---which is usually neglected in the literature but should not be---we monitored the integrated autocorrelation time ($\tau_{int}$), and we achieved effective sample sizes $>5,650$ for all the model parameters. The confidence intervals are unstable at the beginning of the iterations where the values of $\tau_{int}$ are increasing, but they become stable in later iterations where those values are almost constant. The final confidence intervals are $\sim5-100$ times larger than the nominal uncertainties used in our previous study (the standard deviation of three best-fit results). Thus, those nominal uncertainties are not good proxies for the model-parameter uncertainties. Although the position of EON_10.477_41.954 in the target-classification plot (the scale-height to diameter ratio of dust vs that of light-source) decreases by about $20-30$ % when compared to our previous study, its membership in the ``high-group''---i.e., among galaxies with substantial extraplanar dust---nevertheless remains unchanged., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables, MNRAS in press

We present a list of edge-on galaxies that might have substantial extraplanar dust. Twenty-three edge-on galaxies were selected as target galaxies from an edge-on galaxy catalog, and their Galaxy Evolution Explorer far-ultraviolet images were fitted with three dimensional radiative transfer galaxy model. The galaxy model is described by two disks: one for the light source and the other for the dust. The best-fit parameters were found by employing a global optimization method, called differential evolution. To find the galaxies with substantial extraplanar dust using the best-fit parameters, we plotted the ratio of scale-height to galactic diameter: $z_s/D_{25,ph}$ (light source) vs $z_d/D_{25,ph}$ (dust). We found that 17 and 6 galaxies fall on the region of $(z_s/D_{25,ph}\times100)>0.2$ and $(z_s/D_{25,ph}\times100)<0.2$, respectively. The former is named as "high-group" and the latter is named as "low-group." We conclude that "high-group" is likely to be the galaxies with substantial extraplanar dust, while "low-group" is likely to be the ones with little extraplanar dust, i.e. typical galactic thin disk, based on the following points: (1) the relative positions of "high-group" and "low-group" on the plot $z_s/D_{25,ph}$ vs $z_d/D_{25,ph}$ with respect to the reference values from optical radiative transfer studies; (2) the lower scale-height of the young stellar population than the old stellar population; and (3) a test result that shows the existence of extraplanar dust makes $z_s$ and $z_d$ overestimated in the fitting results. We compare vertical profiles of the extraplanar H$\alpha$ emission to those of the UV emission for 38 nearby edge-on late-type galaxies. It is found that detection of the "diffuse" extraplanar dust (eDust), traced by the vertically extended, scattered UV starlight, always coincides with the presence of the extraplanar H$\alpha$ emission. A strong correlation between the scale heights of the extraplanar H$\alpha$ and UV emissions is also found; the scale height at H$\alpha$ is found to be $\sim0.74$ of the scale height at FUV. Our results may indicate the multiphase nature of the diffuse ionized gas and dust in the galactic halos. The existence of eDust in galaxies where the extraplanar H$\alpha$ emission is detected suggests that a larger portion of the extraplanar H$\alpha$ emission than that predicted in previous studies may be caused by H$\alpha$ photons that originate from H II regions in the galactic plane and are subsequently scattered by the eDust. This possibility raise a in studying the eDIG. We also find that the scale heights of the extraplanar emissions normalized to the galaxy size correlate well with the star formation rate surface density of the galaxies. In order to examine their relation to the host galaxy, the extraplanar dust of six nearby galaxies are modeled, employing a three dimensional Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. The targets are from the highly-inclined galaxies that show dust-scattered ultraviolet halos, and the archival Galaxy Evolution Explorer FUV band images were fitted with the model. The observed images are in general well reproduced by two dust layers and one light-source layer, whose vertical and radial distributions have exponential profiles. We obtained several important physical parameters, such as star formation rate (SFR_UV), face-on optical depth, and scale-heights. Three galaxies (NGC 891, NGC 3628, and UGC 11794) show clear evidence for the existence of extraplanar dust layer. However, it is found that the rest three targets (IC 5249, NGC 24, and NGC 4173) do not necessarily need a thick dust disk to model the ultraviolet (UV) halo, because its contribution is too small and the UV halo may be caused by the wing part of the GALEX point spread function. This indicates that the galaxy samples reported to have UV halos may be contaminated by galaxies with negligible extraplanar (halo) dust. The galaxies showing evidence of the extraplanar dust layer fall within a narrow range on the scatter plots between physical parameters such as SFR_UV and extraplanar dust mass. Several mechanisms possible to produce the extraplanar dust are discussed. We present [Fe II] 1.644 um features around ultracompact H II regions (UCHIIs) found on a quest for the "footprint" outflow features of UCHIIs---the feature produced by the outflowing materials ejected during the earlier, active accretion phase of massive young stellar objects (MYSOs). We surveyed 237 UCHIIs in the 1st Galactic quadrant, employing the CORNISH UCHII catalog and UWIFE data which is an imaging survey in [Fe II] 1.644 um performed with UKIRT-WFCAM under ~ 0.8" seeing condition. The [Fe II] features were found around five UCHIIs, one of which is of low plausibility. We interpret that the [Fe II] features are shock-excited by outflows from YSOs, and estimate the outflow mass loss rates from the [Fe II] flux, which are ~ 1 x 10^-6 - 4 x 10^-5 Ms yr^-1. We propose that the [Fe II] features might be the "footprint" outflow features, but more studies are required to clarify it. This is based on the morphological relation between the [Fe II] and 5 GHz radio features, the outflow mass loss rate, the travel time of the [Fe II] features, and the existence of several YSO candidates near the UCHIIs. The UCHIIs accompanying the [Fe II] features have a relatively higher peak flux density. The fraction of UCHIIs accompanying the [Fe II] features, 5/237, is small when compared to the ~ 90 % detection rate of high-velocity CO gas around UCHIIs. The United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT) Widefield Infrared Survey for Fe$^+$ (UWIFE) is a 180 deg$^2$ imaging survey of the first Galactic quadrant (7$^{\circ}$ < l < 62$^{\circ}$; |b| < 1.5$^{\circ}$) using a narrow-band filter centered on the [Fe II] 1.644 {\mu}m emission line. The [Fe II] 1.644 {\mu}m emission is a good tracer of dense, shock-excited gas, and the survey will probe violent environments around stars: star-forming regions, evolved stars, and supernova remnants, among others. The UWIFE survey is designed to complement the existing UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for H2 (UWISH2; Froebrich et al. 2011). The survey will also complement existing broad-band surveys. The observed images have a nominal 5{\sigma} detection limit of 18.7 mag for point sources, with the median seeing of 0.83". For extended sources, we estimate surface brightness limit of 8.1 x 10$^{-20}$ W m$^{-2}$ arcsec$^{-2}$ . We report the detection of vertically extended far-ultraviolet (FUV) and near-UV emissions in an edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 891, which we interpret as being due to dust-scattered starlight. Three-dimensional radiative transfer models are used to investigate the content of the extraplanar dust that is required to explain the UV emission. The UV halos are well reproduced by a radiative transfer model with two exponential dust disks, one with a scaleheight of $\approx$ 0.2 - 0.25 kpc and the other with a scaleheight of $\approx$ 1.2 - 2.0 kpc. The central face-on optical depth of the geometrically thick disk is found to be $\tau_{thick} \approx$ 0.3 - 0.5 at B-band. The results indicate that the dust mass at |z| > 2 kpc is $\approx$ 3 - 5% of the total dust mass, which accord well with the recent Herschel sub-millimeter observation. Our results, together with the recent discovery of the UV halos in other edge-on galaxies, suggest the widespread existence of the geometrically thick dust layer above the galactic plane in spirals., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure, accepted for publication in the ApJL

We present [Fe II] 1.64 {\mu}m imaging observations for jets and outflows from young stellar objects (YSOs) over the northern part (~ 24'x45') of the Carina Nebula, a massive star forming region. The observations were performed with IRIS2 of Anglo-Australian Telescope and the seeing was ~1.5"+-0.5". Eleven jet and outflow features are detected at eight different regions, and are named as Ionized Fe Objects (IFOs). One Herbig-Haro object candidate missed in Hubble Space Telescope H{\alpha} observations is newly identified as HHc-16, referring our [Fe II] images. IFOs have knotty or longish shapes, and the detection rate of IFOs against previously identified YSOs is 1.4 %, which should be treated as a lower limit. Four IFOs show an anti-correlated peak intensities in [Fe II] and H{\alpha}, where the ratio I([Fe II])/I(H{\alpha}) is higher for longish IFOs than for knotty IFOs. We estimate the outflow mass loss rate from the [Fe II] flux, using two different methods. The jet-driving objects are identified for three IFOs (IFO-2, -4, and -7), for which we study the relations between the outflow mass loss rate and the YSO physical parameters from the radiative transfer model fitting. The ratios of the outflow mass loss rate over the disk accretion rate are consistent for IFO-4 and -7 with the previously reported values (10^-2-10^+1), while it is higher for IFO-2. This excess may be from the underestimation of the disk accretion rate. The jet-driving objects are likely to be low- or intermediate-mass stars. We present near-infrared (2.5-5.0 {\mu}m) spectral studies of shocked H2 gas in the two supernova remnants IC 443 and HB 21, which are well known for their interactions with nearby molecular clouds. The observations were performed with Infrared Camera (IRC) aboard the AKARI satellite. At the energy range 7000 K <= E(v,J) <= 20000 K, the shocked H2 gas in IC 443 shows an ortho-to-para ratio (OPR) of 2.4+0.3-0.2, which is significantly lower than the equilibrium value 3, suggesting the existence of non-equilibrium OPR. The shocked gas in HB 21 also indicates a potential non-equilibrium OPR in the range of 1.8-2.0. The level populations are well described by the power-law thermal admixture model with a single OPR, where the temperature integration range is 1000-4000 K. We conclude that the obtained non-equilibrium OPR probably originates from the reformed H2 gas of dissociative J-shocks, considering several factors such as the shock combination requirement, the line ratios, and the possibility that H2 gas can form on grains with a non-equilibrium OPR. We also investigate C-shocks and partially-dissociative J-shocks for the origin of the non-equilibrium OPR. However, we find that they are incompatible with the observed ionic emission lines for which dissociative J-shocks are required to explain. The difference in the collision energy of H atoms on grain surfaces would make the observed difference between the OPRs of IC 443 and HB 21, if dissociative J-shocks are responsible for the H2 emission. We compare the diffuse H$\alpha$ map of our Galaxy with the FUV (1370-1710\AA) continuum map. The H$\alpha$ intensity correlates well with the FUV intensity. The H$\alpha$/FUV intensity ratio increases in general with the H$\alpha$ intensity and the FUV hardness ratio (1370-1520\AA\ to 1560-1710\AA), implying that late OB stars may be the main source of the H$\alpha$ recombination line at high latitudes. The variation of the H$\alpha$ intensity as a function of the Galactic latitude is also very similar to that of the FUV intensity. The results likely suggest that not only the original radiation sources of the H$\alpha$ and FUV backgrounds but also the radiative transfer mechanisms responsible for the diffuse backgrounds are largely common. Therefore, we propose a scenario wherein the H$\alpha$ background at high latitudes is mostly composed of two components, H$\alpha$ photons produced by in-situ recombination at the ionized regions around late OB stars and dust-scattered light of the H$\alpha$ photons originating from late OB stars., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present near-infrared (2.5 - 5.0 um) spectra of shocked H2 gas in the supernova remnant IC 443, obtained with the satellite AKARI. Three shocked clumps-known as B, C, and G-and one background region were observed, and only H2 emission lines were detected. Except the clump B, the extinctioncorrected level population shows the ortho-to-para ratio of ~ 3.0. From the level population of the clumps C and G-both AKARI's only and the one extended with previous mid-infrared observations-we found that the v = 0 levels are more populated than the v > 0 levels at a fixed level energy, which cannot be reproduced by any combination of H2 gas in Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium. The populations are described by the two-density power-law thermal admixture model, revised to include the collisions with H atoms. We attributed the lower (n(H2)=10^(2.8-3.8) cm-3) and higher (n(H2)=10^(5.4-5.8) cm-3) density gases to the shocked H2 gas behind C-type and J-type shocks, respectively, based on several arguments including the obtained high H I abundance n(H I)/n(H2)=0.01. Under the hierarchical picture of molecular clouds, the C-type and J-type shocks likely propagate into "clumps" and "clouds" (interclump media), respectively. The power-law index b of 1.6 and 3.5, mainly determined by the lower density gas, is attributed to the shock-velocity diversity, which may be a natural result during shock-cloud interactions. According to our results, H2 v = 1 - 0 S(1) emission is mainly from J-shocks propagating into interclump media. The H2 emission was also detected at the background region, and this diffuse H2 emission may originate from collisional process in addition to the ultraviolet photon pumping., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures, ApJ accepted

We present the results of infrared (IR; 2.5--160 um) observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) Kes 17 based on the data obtained with the AKARI and Spitzer satellites. We first detect bright continuum emission of its western shell in the mid- and far-IR wavebands together with its near-IR molecular line emission. We also detect hidden mid-IR emission of its southern shell after subtraction of the background emission in this region. The far-IR luminosity of the western shell is ~ 8100 L_sun, which makes Kes 17 one of the few SNRs of significant far-IR emission. The fittings of the spectral energy distribution indicate the existence of two dust components: ~ 79 K (hot) and ~ 27 K (cold) corresponding to the dust mass of ~ 6.2x10^{-4} M_sun and ~ 6.7 M_sun, respectively. We suggest that the hot component represents the dust emission of the material swept up by the SNR to its western and southern boundaries, compatible with the distribution of radio continuum emission overlapping the mid-IR emission in the western and southern shells. The existence of hot (~ 2,000 K), shocked dense molecular gas revealed by the near-IR molecular line emission in the western shell, on the other hand, suggests that the cold dust component represents the dust emission related to the interaction between the SNR and nearby molecular gas. The excitation conditions of the molecular gas appear to be consistent with those from shocked, clumpy admixture gas of different temperatures. We discuss three possibilities for the origin of the bright far-IR emission of the cold dust in the western shell: the emission of dust in the inter-clump medium of shocked molecular clouds, the emission of dust in evaporating flows of molecular clouds engulfed by hot gas, and the emission of dust of nearby molecular clouds illuminated by radiative shocks., Comment: 14 pages including 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

A long infrared jet has been discovered by the Spitzer c2d legacy program in core A of L1251. It is associated with a very embedded Class 0 object with an accretion luminosity of about 0.9 Lsun derived by radiative transfer model fitting to the observed SED. Comparing the observed IRAC colors along the infrared jet with those calculated from a model of an admixture of gas with a power-law temperature distribution indicates that the jet is possibly created by a paraboloidal bow shock propagating into the ambient medium of n(H_2)=10^5 cm^{-3}. In addition, the variation of the power-law index along the jet suggests that the portion of hot gas decreases with distance from the jet engine. The molecular outflow in this region has been mapped for the first time using CO data. From the calculated outflow momentum flux, a very strong lower limit to the average accretion luminosity is 3.6 sin i/cos^3 i Lsun, indicative of a decrease in the accretion rate with time., Comment: To appear in ApJ Letters

We present near- and mid-infrared observations on the shock-cloud interaction region in the southern part of the supernova remnant HB 21, performed with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) aboard AKARI satellite and the Wide InfraRed Camera (WIRC) at the Palomar 5 m telescope. The IRC 4 um (N4), 7 um (S7), and 11 um (S11) band images and the WIRC H2 v=1->0 S(1) 2.12 um image show similar diffuse features, around a shocked CO cloud. We analyzed the emission through comparison with the H2 line emission of several shock models. The IRC colors are well explained by the thermal admixture model of H2 gas--whose infinitesimal H2 column density has a power-law relation with the temperature $T$, $dN\sim T^{-b}dT$--with n(H2) $\sim3.9\times10^4$ cm^{-2}, $b\sim4.2$, and N(H2;T>100K) $\sim2.8\times10^{21}$ cm^{-2}. We interpreted these parameters with several different pictures of the shock-cloud interactions--multiple planar C-shocks, bow shocks, and shocked clumps--and discuss their weaknesses and strengths. The observed H2 v=1->0 S(1) intensity is four times greater than the prediction from the power-law admixture model, the same tendency as found in the northern part of HB 21 (Paper I). We present near- and mid-infrared observations on the shock-cloud interaction region in the northern part of the supernova remnant HB21, performed with the InfraRed Camera (IRC) aboard AKARI satellite and the Wide InfraRed Camera (WIRC) at the Palomar 5 m telescope. The IRC 7 um (S7), 11 um (S11), and 15 um (L15) band images and the WIRC H2 v = 1 -> 0 S(1) 2.12 um image show similar shock-cloud interaction features. We chose three representative regions, and analyzed their IRC emissions through comparison with H2 line emissions of several shock models. The IRC colors are well explained by the thermal admixture model of H2 gas--whose infinitesimal H2 column density has a power-law relation with the temperature T, dN ~ T^-b dT--with n(H2) ~ 10^3 cm^-3, b ~ 3, and N(H2 ;T > 100K) ~ 3x10^20 cm^-2. The derived b value may be understood by a bow shock picture, whose shape is cycloidal (cuspy) rather than paraboloidal. However, this picture raises another issue that the bow shocks must reside within ~0.01 pc size-scale, smaller than the theoretically expected. Instead, we conjectured a shocked clumpy interstellar medium picture, which may avoid the sizescale issue while explaining the similar model parameters. The observed H2 v = 1 -> 0 S(1) intensities are a factor of ~17 - 33 greater than the prediction from the power-law admixture model. We present far-ultraviolet observations of the Antlia supernova remnant obtained with Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS, also called SPEAR). The strongest lines observed are C IV 1548,1551 and C III 977. The C IV emission of this mixed-morphology supernova remnant shows a clumpy distribution, and the line intensity is nearly constant with radius. The C III 977 line, though too weak to be mapped over the whole remnant, is shown to vary radially. The line intensity peaks at about half the radius, and drops at the edge of the remnant. Both the clumpy distribution of C IV and the rise in the C IV to C III ratio towards the edge suggest that central emission is from evaporating cloudlets rather than thermal conduction in a more uniform, dense medium., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, will be published in ApJ December 1, 2007, v670n2 issue. see http://astro.snu.ac.kr/~jhshinn/ms.pdf

Diffuse far-ultraviolet (FUV) emissions from the Lupus Loop region (SNR 330.0+15.0) have been observed with Spectroscopy of Plasma Evolution from Astrophysical Radiation (SPEAR), also known as Far-ultraviolet IMaging Spectrograph (FIMS). We have detected several important ionic lines, including Si II*, C IV, and N IV], which characterize the warm, hot ionized gas in this region. The spatial variations in the line intensities of Si II* and C IV have also been studied in comparison with X-ray and dust observations. The result shows that they originate from the interface between the hot gas seen in the X-ray and the cooler H I shell with which dust is associated. The interface is rather diffuse, and the gases with different temperatures seem to co-exist in this region. A shock may exist upfront in the interface, but its velocity should be very small as no shock-related distinguished feature is seen in Ha., Comment: Accepted in ApJL, 4 pages, 3 figures

The SPEAR (or 'FIMS') instrumentation has been used to conduct the first large-scale spectral mapping of diffuse cosmic far ultraviolet (FUV, 900-1750 AA) emission, including important diagnostics of interstellar hot (10^4 K - 10^6 K) and photoionized plasmas, H_2, and dust scattered starlight. The instrumentation's performance has allowed for the unprecedented detection of astrophysical diffuse far UV emission lines. A spectral resolution of 550 and an imaging resolution of 5' is achieved on-orbit in the Short (900 - 1175 AA) and Long (1335 - 1750 AA) bandpass channels within their respective 7.4 deg x 4.3' and 4.0 deg x 4.6' fields of view. We describe the SPEAR imaging spectrographs, their performance, and the nature and handling of their data.
