- Abstract
Background: Many individuals with intellectual disabilities experience challenges to participating in organized sport, despite its known benefits. The aim of this qualitative study was to understand the experiences of participating in sport (Special Olympics) from the perspectives of athletes with intellectual disabilities. Methods: Five participants (13-33 years of age) took part in a photo-elicitation project during a 1-month period. Results: Our thematic analysis of participant photographs and descriptions revealed the following athlete themes: "Connectedness" and "Training in Sport". Conclusion: Photo-elicitation was a useful and important tool in assisting athlete participants to communicate their motivations to participate in sport in ways that using traditional verbal interviewing would not.

- Abstract
IMPORTANCE The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (younger than 50 years) is rising globally, the reasons for which are unclear. It appears to represent a unique disease process with different clinical, pathological, and molecular characteristics compared with late-onset colorectal cancer. Data on oncological outcomes are limited, and sensitivity to conventional neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy regimens appear to be unknown. The purpose of this review is to summarize the available literature on early-onset colorectal cancer. OBSERVATIONS Within the next decade, it is estimated that 1 in 10 colon cancers and 1 in 4 rectal cancers will be diagnosed in adults younger than 50 years. Potential risk factors include aWesternized diet, obesity, antibiotic usage, and alterations in the gut microbiome. Although genetic predisposition plays a role, most cases are sporadic. The full spectrum of germline and somatic sequence variations implicated remains unknown. Younger patients typically present with descending colonic or rectal cancer, advanced disease stage, and unfavorable histopathological features. Despite being more likely to receive neoadjuvant and adjuvant therapy, patients with early-onset disease demonstrate comparable oncological outcomes with their older counterparts. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE The clinicopathological features, underlying molecular profiles, and drivers of early-onset colorectal cancer differ from those of late-onset disease. Standardized, age-specific preventive, screening, diagnostic, and therapeutic strategies are required to optimize outcomes.

This study explored whether Family Quality of Life (FQOL) differs in families with two or more children with developmental disability (DD) compared to families with only one child with DD and examined predictors of FQOL including child, family, and context variables. The current study used convenience sample information from a nationwide survey completed by 209 parents of children with severe DD across Canada. The two subgroups were compared using independent t-tests and, contrary to our original hypothesis, families with more than one child with DD had significantly higher FQOL (t(177) = -2.35, p = .02) with a medium effect size. However, a hierarchical regression revealed that no additional variance was accounted for by whether there were one or multiple children with DD in the family after accounting for other child, family and parent, and context variables. These findings suggest that having two or more children with DD has no major negative impact on families' QOL compared to having only one child with DD. In conclusion, these caregivers seem to be resilient despite the extra time and effort they devote to their multiple care giving roles. Furthermore, previous care giving experiences may have enhanced their resiliency to cope positively with their current circumstances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

BEHAVIOR modification for autistic children ,AUTISM spectrum disorders ,CHILDREN with autism spectrum disorders ,BEHAVIOR modification ,EXPLORATORY factor analysis - Abstract
Professionals in the field have emphasized the importance of parents' involvement in Intensive Behavioral Intervention (IBI) programs for their children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD); however, little research has explored this involvement or what it entails. A parent self-report questionnaire was designed, in which parents' involvement, along with other factors related to involvement, were operationalized and measured. Questionnaires were completed by 105 parents of children with ASD. To create a theoretically sound and statistically reliable measure of involvement, an exploratory factor analysis of 20 involvement items was conducted. This resulted in a good-fitting four-factor model, in which four distinct types of involvement emerged: formal IBI, child program, training, and agency involvement. These results demonstrate that there are several different ways that parents can be involved in their children's IBI program. Implications for working with parents are discussed.
