Ascaris lumbricoides causes one of the most common soil-transmitted helminthiases globally. The worms mostly infect the human small intestine and elicit negligible or nonspecific symptoms, but there are reports of extraintestinal ectopic ascariasis. We describe a rare case of biliary ascariasis mistaken for biliary stent in a 72-year-old female patient with a history of liver resection. She visited our outpatient clinic complaining of right upper quadrant pain and fever for the past week. She had previously undergone left lateral sectionectomy for recurrent biliary and intrahepatic duct stones 2 years ago. Besides mildly elevated gamma-glutamyl transferase levels, her liver function tests were normal. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography revealed a linear filling defect closely resembling an internal stent from the common bile duct to the right intrahepatic bile duct. A live female A. lumbricoides adult worm was removed by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Despite a significant decrease of the ascariasis prevalence in Korea, cases of biliary ascariasis are still occasionally reported. In this study, a additional case of biliary ascariasis, which was radiologically misdiagnosed as the biliary stent, was described in a hepatic resection patient by the worm recovery with ERCP in Korea.

Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (ACC) is a rare neoplasm accounting less than 1% of malignant pancreatic tumors. A 47-year-old male patient visited the emergency room with epigastric pain. Computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 4.7-cm heterogeneously enhanced solid and cystic mass with internal necrosis located in the head of the pancreas. Radiological diagnosis was borderline malignancy such as neuroendocrine tumor or solid pseudopapillary neoplasm. Two months later, the necrotic mass in the pancreas head had grown up to 11 cm, compressing the duodenum, superior mesenteric vein, and proximal transverse colon. Pylorus preserving pancreatoduodenectomy with segmental resection of transverse colon was performed. Histopathological examination revealed that the tumor was pancreatic ACC. The patient recovered without any complication and was doing well without recurrence for 12 months after surgery.

Purpose: This study investigated the antiadhesive effects of Mediclore®, rosuvastatin, and a combination of Mediclore and rosuvastatin in a rat adhesion model. Methods: The adhesion models (a total of 58 adult male rats) were divided into 4 groups. The control group (group C) received no special materials except for a saline. The experimental groups were treated with 5 mL of Mediclore (group M), rosuvastatin (group R), or rosuvastatin and Mediclore (group RM), and these materials were intraperitoneally placed under the incision. At postoperative day 14, the rats underwent re-laparotomy and adhesiolysis. Three investigators blinded to group assignment scored the extent of adhesion formation, the numbers of remote adhesions, and the extent of acute/chronic inflammation, fibrosis, edema, and congestion on resected specimens via histologic examination. Results: The macroscopic adhesion score in group RM (7.27 ± 3.51) was significantly lower than those in groups C (13.36 ± 2.24) and R (11.71 ± 1.98); group M (9.13 ± 4.09) had a significantly lower adhesion score than group C. The number of remote adhesions was significantly lower in groups R and RM than in group C. The acute inflammation score, chronic inflammation score, and fibrosis score in group RM; the acute inflammation score in group R; and the fibrosis score in group M were significantly lower than those in group C. Conclusion: The intraperitoneal application of Mediclore and a combination of Mediclore and rosuvastatin effectively reduced postoperative adhesions.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to confirm the effects of Liriope platyphylla extract on relieving Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) through regulation of acid secretion.Methods: 8-week-old ICR mice were divided into untreated control group (Ctrl), GERD elecitation group (GERDE), Omeprazole administrate group before GERD elicitation (OMA), and Liriope platyphylla extract administrate group before GERD elicitation (LPA). After inducing GERD, gross observation and histological examination were performed and ATP6V1B1 (ATPase H+ Transporting V1 Subunit B1), GRPR (Gastrin-releasing peptide receptor), COX-1 (Cyclooxygenase 1), 8-OHdG (8-hydroxy-2’-deoxyguanosine), Cathelicidin, p-JNK (phospho c-Jun N-terminal kinase) were observed to confirm the damage defense effect of the esophageal mucosa, acid secretion regulation, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mucosal protection, and apoptosis regulationResults: OMA and LPA showed lower levels of damage compared to GERDE in gross observation and histological examination. ATP6V1B1, GRPR, and 8-OHdG showed lower positive reactions in OMA and LPA than in GERDE. COX-1 were less positive in GERDE and OMA than in Ctrl, but showed higher secretion in LPA than in Ctrl. Cathelicidin showed a decreased positive reaction in GERDE, OMA and LPA compared to Ctrl, but the decrease in positive reaction was smaller in OMA and LPA compared to GERDE. p-JNK showed increased positive reaction in GERDE, OMA and LPA than in Ctrl, but the increase in the positive reaction was smaller in the OMA and LPA compared to GERDE.Conclusions: The effects of Liriope platyphylla extract on esophageal mucosal damage protection, acid secretion regulation, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, mucosal protection and apoptosis regulation were confirmed.

Conspectus Photoelectrochemical water-splitting is a promising and sustainable way to store the energy of the sun in chemical bonds and use it to produce hydrogen gas, a clean fuel. The key components in photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) are photoelectrodes, including a photocathode that reduces water to hydrogen gas and a photoanode that oxidizes water to oxygen gas. Materials used in photoelectrodes for PECs must effectively absorb sunlight, yield photogenerated carriers, and exhibit electronic properties that enable the efficient shuttling of carriers to the surface to participate in relevant water-splitting reactions. Discovering and understanding the key characteristics of optimal photoelectrode materials is paramount to the realization of PEC technologies. Oxide-based photoelectrodes can satisfy many of these materials requirements, including stability in aqueous environments, band edges with reasonable alignment with the redox potentials for water splitting, and ease of synthesis. However, oxide photoelectrodes generally suffer from poor charge transport properties and considerable bulk electron–hole separation, and they have relatively large band gaps. Numerous strategies have been proposed to improve these aspects and understand how these improvements are reflected in the photoelectrochemical performance. Unfortunately, the structural and compositional complexity of multinary oxides accompanied by the inherent complexity of photoelectrochemical processes makes it challenging to understand the individual effects of composition, structure, and defects in the bulk and on the surface on a material’s photoelectrochemical properties. The integration of experiment and theory has great potential to increase our atomic-level understanding of structure–composition–property relationships in oxide photoelectrodes. In this Account, we describe how integrating experiment and theory is beneficial for achieving scientific insights at the microscopic scale. We highlight studies focused on understanding the role of (i) bulk composition via solid-state solutions, intercalation, and comparison with isoelectronic compounds, (ii) dopants for both the anion and cation and their interactions with oxygen vacancies, and (iii) surface/interface structure in the photocurrent generation and photoelectrochemical performance in oxide photoelectrodes. In each instance, we outline strategies and considerations for integrating experiment and theory and describe how this integration led to valuable insights and new directions in uncovering structure–composition–property relationships. Our aim is to demonstrate the unique value of combining experiment and theory in studying photoelectrodes and to encourage the continued effort to bring experiment and theory in closer step with each other.

5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which can be derived from lignocellulosic biomass, is an important platform molecule that can be used to produce valuable biofuels and polymeric materials. Electrochemical reduction of HMF is of great interest as it uses water as the hydrogen source and achieves desired reduction reactions at room temperature and ambient pressure. Hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis are two important reactions for reductive HMF conversion. Therefore, elucidating key characteristics of electrocatalysts that govern the selectivity for hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis is critical in rationally developing efficient and selective electrocatalysts. In this study, combined experimental and computational investigations are used to demonstrate how the adsorption energy of HMF on metal surfaces and the resulting changes in the intramolecular bond lengths of adsorbed HMF directly impact the reduction pathways of HMF. These results make it possible to rationally understand a general trend in the behaviors observed when using various metal electrodes for HMF reduction.

We present a combined computational and experimental study of the adsorption of water on the Mo-doped BiVO4(010) surface, revealing how excess electrons influence the dissociation of water and lead to hydroxyl-induced alterations of the surface electronic structure. By comparing ambient pressure resonant photoemission spectroscopy (AP-ResPES) measurements with the results of first-principles calculations, we show that the dissociation of water on the stoichiometric Mo-doped BiVO4(010) surface stabilizes the formation of a small electron polaron on the VO4 tetrahedral site and leads to an enhanced concentration of localized electronic charge at the surface. Our calculations demonstrate that the dissociated water accounts for the enhanced V4+ signal observed in ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and the enhanced signal of a small electron polaron inter-band state observed in AP-ResPES measurements. For ternary oxide surfaces, which may contain oxygen vacancies in addition to other electron-donating dopants, our study reveals the importance of defects in altering the surface reactivity toward water and the concomitant water-induced modifications to the electronic structure.

Effectively storing electricity produced from renewable sources and increasing the supply of fresh water with a reduced carbon footprint are two pressing issues to sustainably and reliably provide electricity and clean water. In this study, a new aqueous rechargeable Na-ion battery system, which can store/release energy while operating in seawater and can also perform membrane-free seawater desalination, is developed enabling a dual-purpose energy storage system (ESS). The discharging cell of this system is composed of a sodiated NaTi2(PO4)3 electrode and a desodiated nickel hexacyanoferrate (NiHCF) electrode in 0.6 M NaCl, and generates an average output voltage of 1.19 V. The charging process is achieved in two separate cells that require low input voltages. In the first, a desodiated NaTi2(PO4)3 electrode is paired with Bi as a Cl-storage electrode, and this cell performs desalination during charging. In the second, a sodiated NiHCF electrode is paired with a chlorinated Bi electrode, and this cell performs salination during charging. The energy output generated by the discharging cell is ~94% of the combined energy inputs required by the two charging cells. As the energy consumed for the desalination and salination processes is not truly consumed but rather stored in the system through the charging process, and the majority of the energy stored during charging is recovered during discharging, the extra energy consumed for desalination is minimized. The high energy efficiency and desalination performance of the proof-of-concept dual-purpose ESS are reported with excellent cyclabilities of all component electrodes (> 1000 cycles).

The ability to engineer a photoelectrode surface is pivotal for optimizing the properties of any photoelectrode used for solar fuel production. Altering crystal facets exposed on the surface of photoelectrodes has been a major strategy to modify their surface structure. However, there exist numerous ways to terminate the surface even for the same facet, which can considerably alter the photoelectrode properties. Here we report tightly integrated experimental and computational investigations of epitaxial BiVO4 photoelectrodes with vanadium- and bismuth-rich (010) facets. Our study demonstrates that even for the same facet the surface Bi:V ratio has a remarkable impact on the interfacial energetics and photoelectrochemical properties. We also elucidate the microscopic origins of how the surface composition can affect the photoelectrochemical properties. This study opens an unexplored path for understanding and engineering surface energetics via tuning the surface termination/composition of multinary oxide photoelectrodes. Surface facets are known to influence the behaviour of photoelectrodes for solar fuel production; however, the role of surface composition, which can vary even for the same facet, is less well understood. Here the authors find that the surface Bi:V ratio is a key factor that affects properties of BiVO4 photoanodes.

Hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis are two important reactions for electrochemical reductive valorization of biomass-derived oxygenates such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). In general, hydrogenolysis (which combines hydrogenation and deoxygenation) is more challenging than hydrogenation (which does not involve the cleavage of carbon-oxygen bonds). Thus, identifying factors and conditions that can promote hydrogenolysis is of great interest for reductive valorization of biomass-derived oxygenates. For the electrochemical reduction of HMF and its derivatives, it is known that aldehyde hydrogenation is not a part of aldehyde hydrogenolysis but rather a competing reaction; however, no atomic-level understanding is currently available to explain their electrochemical mechanistic differences. In this study, combined experimental and computational investigations were performed using Cu electrodes to elucidate the key mechanistic differences between electrochemical hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of HMF. The results revealed that hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis of HMF involve the formation of different surface-adsorbed intermediates via different reduction mechanisms and that lowering the pH promoted the formation of the intermediates required for aldehyde and alcohol hydrogenolysis. This study for the first time explains the origins of the experimentally observed pH-dependent selectivities for hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis and offers a new mechanistic foundation upon which rational strategies to control electrochemical hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis can be developed.

A great deal of attention has been directed toward studying the electrochemical oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a molecule that can be obtained from biomass-derived cellulose and hemicellulose, to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a molecule that can replace the petroleum-derived terephthalic acid in the production of widely used polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate. NiOOH is one of the best and most well studied electrocatalysts for achieving this transformation; however, the mechanism by which it does so is still poorly understood. This study quantitatively examines how two different dehydrogenation mechanisms on NiOOH impact the oxidation of HMF and its oxidation intermediates on the way to FDCA. Selective oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding aldehyde or carboxylic acid is one of the most important classes of organic synthesis reactions. In addition, electrochemical alcohol oxidation is considered a viable anode reaction that can be paired with H2 evolution or other reductive fuel production reactions in electrochemical and photoelectrochemical cells. NiOOH, a material that has been extensively studied as an oxygen evolution catalyst, is among the most promising electrocatalysts for selective alcohol oxidation. Electrochemical alcohol oxidation by NiOOH has been understood since the 1970s to proceed through a hydrogen atom transfer to NiOOH. In this study, we establish that there is a second, more dominant general alcohol oxidation pathway on NiOOH enabled at more positive potentials. Using a three-step electrochemical procedure we developed, we deconvoluted the currents corresponding to these two pathways for various alcohols and aldehydes. The results show that alcohols and aldehydes have a distinct difference in their respective preferences for the two oxidation pathways. Our three-step electrochemical procedure also allowed us to evaluate the Ni valence involved with the different oxidation pathways to elucidate their mechanistic differences. Using these experimental results coupled with a computational investigation, we propose that the new pathway entails hydride transfer from the substrate to Ni4+ sites in NiOOH. This study offers an essential foundation to understand various oxidative electrochemical dehydrogenation reactions on oxide and hydroxide-based catalytic electrodes.
