In this fourth paper from the AGORA Collaboration, we study the evolution down to redshift $z=2$ and below of a set of cosmological zoom-in simulations of a Milky Way mass galaxy by eight of the leading hydrodynamic simulation codes. We also compare this CosmoRun suite of simulations with dark matter-only simulations by the same eight codes. We analyze general properties of the halo and galaxy at $z=4$ and 3, and before the last major merger, focusing on the formation of well-defined rotationally-supported disks, the mass-metallicity relation, the specific star formation rate, the gas metallicity gradients, and the non-axisymmetric structures in the stellar disks. Codes generally converge well to the stellar-to-halo mass ratios predicted by semi-analytic models at $z\sim$2. We see that almost all the hydro codes develop rotationally-supported structures at low redshifts. Most agree within 0.5 dex with the observed MZR at high and intermediate redshifts, and reproduce the gas metallicity gradients obtained from analytical models and low-redshift observations. We confirm that the inter-code differences in the halo assembly history reported in the first paper of the collaboration also exist in CosmoRun, making the code-to-code comparison more difficult. We show that such differences are mainly due to variations in code-dependent parameters that control the time-stepping strategy of the gravity solver. We find that variations in the early stellar feedback can also result in differences in the timing of the low-redshift mergers. We analyze the circumgalactic medium (CGM) for eight commonly-used cosmological codes in the AGORA collaboration. The codes are calibrated to use identical initial conditions, cosmology, heating and cooling, and star formation thresholds, but each evolves with its own unique code architecture and stellar feedback implementation. Here, we analyze the results of these simulations in terms of the structure, composition, and phase dynamics of the CGM. We show properties such as metal distribution, ionization levels, and kinematics are effective tracers of the effects of the different code feedback and implementation methods, and as such they can be highly divergent between simulations. This is merely a fiducial set of models, against which we will in the future compare multiple feedback recipes for each code. Nevertheless, we find that the large parameter space these simulations establish can help disentangle the different variables that affect observable quantities in the CGM, e.g., showing that abundances for ions with higher ionization energy are more strongly determined by the simulation's metallicity, while abundances for ions with lower ionization energy are more strongly determined by the gas density and temperature., Comment: 32 pages, 17 figures. Dark matter-deficient galaxies (DMDGs) discovered in the survey of ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs), in apparent conflict with standard CDM, may be produced by high-velocity galaxy-galaxy collisions, the $\textit{Mini-bullet}$ scenario. Recent observations of an aligned trail of $7-11$ UDGs near NGC1052, including DMDGs DF2 and DF4, suggesting a common formation event, $\sim8.9\pm1.5$ Gyr ago, provide a test. Hydro/N-body simulations, supplemented by galaxy orbit integrations, demonstrate that satellite-satellite collisions outside the host-galaxy virial radius can reproduce the observed UDGs in the NGC1052 group. A trail of $\sim10$ DMDGs is shown to form, including two massive ones that replicate the observed motions of DF2 and DF4. The linear relation, $v=Ax+v_{0}$, conjectured previously to relate positions ($x$) and velocities ($v$) of the aligned DMDGs as a signature of the collision event, is approximately obeyed, but individual DMDGs can deviate significantly from it. The progenitors whose collision spawned the trail of DMDGs survive the collision without, themselves, becoming DMDGs. We predict one progenitor is located at the end of the trail, testable by observing the difference between its stars, formed pre-collision, from those of the DMDGs, formed post-collision. By contrast, stellar ages and metallicities of the DMDGs are nearly identical. We further offer a hint that the tidal field of host NGC1052 may contribute to making DMDGs diffuse. $\Lambda$CDM simulation in a 100 cMpc box finds our required initial conditions $\sim10$ times at $z<3$. We investigate the connection of the regulation of star formation and the cycling of baryons within and in and out of galaxies. We use idealized numerical simulations of Milky Way-mass galaxies, in which we systemically vary the galaxy morphology (bulge-to-total mass ratio) and stellar feedback strength (total eight setups with 80 simulations). By following individual gas parcels through the disk, spiral arms, and massive star-forming clumps, we quantify how gas moves and oscillates through the different phases of the interstellar medium (ISM) and forms stars. We show that the residence time of gas in the dense ISM phase ($\tau_{\rm SF}$), the nature of spiral arms (strength, number), and the clump properties (number, mass function, and young star fraction) depend on both the galaxy morphology and stellar feedback. Based on these results, we quantify signatures of the baryon cycle within galaxies using the temporal and spatial power spectrum density (PSD) of the star formation history (SFH). Stronger stellar feedback leads to more bursty star formation while the correlation timescale of the SFH is longer, because stronger feedback dissolves the dense, star-forming ISM phase, leading to a more homogeneous ISM and a decrease in $\tau_{\rm SF}$. The bulge strength has a similar effect: the deep gravitational potential in a bulge-dominant galaxy imposes a strong shear force that effectively breaks apart gas clumps in the ISM; this subsequently inhibits the fragmentation of cool gas and therefore the star formation in the disk, leading to a decrease in the spatial power on scales of $\sim$ 1 kpc. We conclude that measurements of the temporal and spatial PSD of the SFH can provide constraints on the baryon cycle and the star formation process., Comment: 22 pages including 17 figures. We apply a novel method with machine learning to calibrate sub-grid models within numerical simulation codes to achieve convergence with observations and between different codes. It utilizes active learning and neural density estimators. The hyper parameters of the machine are calibrated with a well-defined projectile motion problem. Then, using a set of 22 cosmological zoom simulations, we tune the parameters of a popular star formation and feedback model within Enzo to match simulations. The parameters that are adjusted include the star formation efficiency, coupling of thermal energy from stellar feedback, and volume into which the energy is deposited. This number translates to a factor of more than three improvements over manual calibration. Despite using fewer simulations, we obtain a better agreement to the observed baryon makeup of a Milky-Way (MW) sized halo. Switching to a different strategy, we improve the consistency of the recommended parameters from the machine. Given the success of the calibration, we then apply the technique to reconcile metal transport between grid-based and particle-based simulation codes using an isolated galaxy. It is an improvement over manual exploration while hinting at a less known relation between the diffusion coefficient and the metal mass in the halo region. The exploration and calibration of the parameters of the sub-grid models with a machine learning approach is concluded to be versatile and directly applicable to different problems.

How diffuse dwarf galaxies that are deficient in dark matter -- such as NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4 -- formed remains a mystery. Along with their luminous member globular clusters (GCs), the so-called dark matter deficient galaxies (DMDGs) have challenged observers and theorists alike. Here we report a suite of galaxy collision simulations using the adaptive mesh refinement code ENZO with 1.25 pc resolution, which demonstrates that high-velocity galaxy collisions induce the formation of DMDGs and their star clusters (SCs) simultaneously. With a numerical resolution significantly better than our previous study (Shin et al. 2020), we resolve the dynamical structure of the produced DMDGs and the detailed formation history of their SCs which are possible progenitors of the DMDG's member GCs. In particular, we show that a galaxy collision with a high relative velocity of $\sim 300\;{\rm km\;s}^{-1}$, invoking severe shock compression, spawns multiple massive SCs ($\gtrsim 10^{6}\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$) within 150 Myr after the collision. At the end of our ~ 800 Myr fiducial run, the resulting DMDG of $M_{\star} \simeq 3.5\times 10^{8}\;{M}_{\odot}$ hosts 10 luminous ($M_{\rm V} \lesssim -8.5\;{\rm mag}$), gravitational bound SCs with a line-of-sight velocity dispersion $11.2\;{\rm km\;s}^{-1}$. Our study suggests that DMDGs and their luminous member SCs could form simultaneously in high-velocity galaxy collisions while being in line with the key observed properties of NGC1052-DF2 and NGC1052-DF4., Comment: 10 pages including 6 figures. Metallicity is a fundamental probe for understanding the baryon physics in a galaxy. Since metals are intricately associated with radiative cooling, star formation, and feedback, reproducing the observed metal distribution through numerical experiments will provide a prominent way to examine our understandings of galactic baryon physics. In this study, we analyze the dependence of the galactic metal distribution on the numerical schemes and quantify the differences in the metal mixing among modern galaxy simulation codes (the mesh-based code Enzo and the particle-based codes Gadget-2 and Gizmo-PSPH). In particular, we examine different stellar feedback strengths and an explicit metal diffusion scheme in particle-based codes, as a way to alleviate the well-known discrepancy in metal transport between mesh-based and particle-based simulations. We demonstrate that a sufficient number of gas particles are needed in the gas halo to properly investigate the metal distribution therein. Including an explicit metal diffusion scheme does not significantly affect the metal distribution in the galactic disk but does change the amount of low-metallicity gas in the hot-diffuse halo. We also find that the spatial distribution of metals depends strongly on how the stellar feedback is modeled. We demonstrate that the previously reported discrepancy in metals between mesh-based and particle-based simulations can be mitigated with our proposed prescription, enabling these simulations to be reliably utilized in the study of metals in galactic halos and the circumgalactic medium., Comment: 18 pages including 12 figures. The recent discovery of diffuse dwarf galaxies that are deficient in dark matter appears to challenge the current paradigm of structure formation in our Universe. We describe the numerical experiments to determine if the so-called dark matter deficient galaxies (DMDGs) could be produced when two gas-rich, dwarf-sized galaxies collide with a high relative velocity of $\sim 300\,{\rm kms^{-1}}$. Using idealized high-resolution simulations with both mesh-based and particle-based gravito-hydrodynamics codes, we find that DMDGs can form as high-velocity galaxy collisions separate dark matter from the warm disk gas which subsequently is compressed by shock and tidal interaction to form stars. Then using a large simulated universe IllustrisTNG, we discover a number of high-velocity galaxy collision events in which DMDGs are expected to form. However, we did not find evidence that these types of collisions actually produced DMDGs in the TNG100-1 run. We argue that the resolution of the numerical experiment is critical to realize the "collision-induced" DMDG formation scenario.
