We present a detailed study of the large-scale shock front in Stephan's Quintet, a byproduct of past and ongoing interactions. Using integral-field spectroscopy from the new William Herschel Telescope Enhanced Area Velocity Explorer (WEAVE), recent 144 MHz observations from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), and archival data from the Very Large Array and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), we obtain new measurements of key shock properties and determine its impact on the system. Harnessing the WEAVE large integral field unit's (LIFU) field of view (90 $\times$ 78 arcsec$^{2}$), spectral resolution ($R\sim2500$) and continuous wavelength coverage across the optical band, we perform robust emission line modeling and dynamically locate the shock within the multi-phase intergalactic medium (IGM) with higher precision than previously possible. The shocking of the cold gas phase is hypersonic, and comparisons with shock models show that it can readily account for the observed emission line ratios. In contrast, we demonstrate that the shock is relatively weak in the hot plasma visible in X-rays (with Mach number of $\mathcal{M} \sim 2 - 4$), making it inefficient at producing the relativistic particles needed to explain the observed synchrotron emission. Instead, we propose that it has led to an adiabatic compression of the medium, which has increased the radio luminosity ten-fold. Comparison of the Balmer line-derived extinction map with the molecular gas and hot dust observed with JWST suggests that pre-existing dust may have survived the collision, allowing the condensation of H$_{2}$ - a key channel for dissipating the shock energy., Comment: 23 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Both star formation (SF) and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) play an important role in galaxy evolution. Statistically quantifying their relative importance can be done using radio luminosity functions. Until now these relied on galaxy classifications, where sources with a mixture of radio emission from SF and AGN are labelled as either a star-forming galaxy or an AGN. This can cause the misestimation of the relevance of AGN. Brightness temperature measurements at 144 MHz with the International LOFAR telescope can separate radio emission from AGN and SF. We use the combination of sub-arcsec and arcsec resolution imaging of 7,497 sources in the Lockman Hole and ELAIS-N1 fields to identify AGN components in the sub-arcsec resolution images and subtract them from the total flux density, leaving flux density from SF only. We construct, for the first time, radio luminosity functions by physical process, either SF or AGN activity, revealing a hidden AGN population at $L_{\textrm{144MHz}}$$<10^{24}$ W$\,$Hz$^{-1}$ . This paper presents a 610 MHz radio survey covering 1.94 square degrees around the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP), which includes parts of the AKARI (ADF-N) and Euclid, Deep Fields North. The median 5-sigma sensitivity is 28 microJy beam per beam, reaching as low as 19 microJy per beam, with a synthesised beam of 3.6 x 4.1 arcsec. The catalogue contains 1675 radio components, with 339 grouped into multi-component sources and 284 isolated components likely part of double radio sources. Imaging, cataloguing, and source identification are presented, along with preliminary scientific results. From a non-statistical sub-set of 169 objects with multi-wavelength AKARI and other detections, luminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs) represent 66 percent of the sample, ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) 4 percent, and sources with L_IR < 1011 L_sun 30 percent. In total, 56 percent of sources show some AGN presence, though only seven are AGN-dominated. ULIRGs require three times higher AGN contribution to produce high-quality SED fits compared to lower luminosity galaxies, and AGN presence increases with AGN fraction. The PAH mass fraction is insignificant, although ULIRGs have about half the PAH strength of lower IR-luminosity galaxies. Higher luminosity galaxies show gas and stellar masses an order of magnitude larger, suggesting higher star formation rates. For LIRGs, AGN presence increases with redshift, indicating that part of the total luminosity could be contributed by AGN activity rather than star formation. Simple cross-matching revealed 13 ROSAT QSOs, 45 X-ray sources, and 61 sub-mm galaxies coincident with GMRT radio sources.

The appearance of the jets and lobes of some radio galaxies makes it difficult to assign them to a known class of objects. This is often due to the activity of the central engine and/or interactions with the environment, as well as projection effects. We analyse the radio data for an apparently asymmetric radio source 4C70.19, which is associated with the giant elliptical galaxy NGC6048. The source shows distorted radio jets and lobes, one of which bends by 180 degrees. The aim of our study is to explain the nature of the observed distortions. We used LOFAR, Effelsberg, and VLA radio data in a wide range of frequencies. At high frequencies, we also used radio polarimetry to study the properties of the magnetic fields. Additionally, we made use of optical, infra-red, and X-ray data. Polarisation data suggest shearing of the magnetic fields at points where the jets bend. The low-frequency LOFAR map at 145 MHz, as well as the sensitive single-dish Effelsberg map at 8.35 GHz, reveal previously undetected diffuse emission around the source. The rotation measure (RM) derived from the polarimetric data allowed us to estimate the density of the medium surrounding the source, which agrees with typical densities of the intergalactic medium or the outer parts of insterstellar halos. We propose that the southern jet is bent in the same manner as the northern one, but that it is inclined to the sky plane. Both these bends are likely caused by the orbital motion within the galaxy group, as well as interactions with the intergalactic medium. Our analyses suggest that, despite its complex morphology, 4C70.19 seems to be intrinsically symmetric with a physical extent of up to 600 kpc, and that the diffuse emission detected in our high-sensitivity maps is related to radio plumes that are expanding behind the source., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, Astronomy & Astrophysics, in press

The Perseus cluster is the brightest X-ray cluster in the sky and is known as a cool-core galaxy cluster. Being a very nearby cluster, it has been extensively studied. This has provided a comprehensive view of the physical processes that operate in the intracluster medium (ICM), including feedback from the AGN 3C84 and measurements of ICM turbulence. Additionally, the Perseus cluster contains a central radio mini-halo. This diffuse radio source traces cosmic ray electrons (re-)accelerated in-situ in the ICM. Here we report on LOFAR high-band antenna 120-168 MHz observations of the Perseus cluster that probe a range of four orders of magnitude in angular scales. In our 0.3 arcsec resolution image, we find that the northern extension of the 3C84 lobe consists of several narrow 1.5-3 kpc parallel strands of emission. In addition, we detect steep-spectrum filaments associated with a previous outburst of the central AGN radio emission filling two known X-ray ghost cavities. At 7 arcsec resolution, our images show a complex structured radio mini-halo, with several edges and filaments. At resolutions of 26 arcsec and 80 arcsec, we discover diffuse radio emission with a 1.1 Mpc extent. We classify this emission as a giant radio halo and its properties are distinct from the inner mini-halo. We also detect two diffuse sources at projected cluster centric radii of 0.7 and 1.0 Mpc. Finally, we observe a 0.9 Mpc long trail of radio emission from the cluster member galaxy IC310, connecting it with the giant radio halo. Together with other recent studies of relaxed clusters, our LOFAR observations indicate that cluster-wide radio emission could be (more) common in cool-core clusters. We present deep, wideband multifrequency radio observations (144 MHz$-$8 GHz) of the remarkable galaxy group NGC 741, which yield crucial insights into the interaction between the infalling head-tail radio galaxy (NGC 742) and the main group. Our new data provide an unprecedentedly detailed view of the NGC 741-742 system, including the shock cone, disrupted jets from NGC 742, the long ($\sim$ 255 kpc) braided southern radio tail, and eastern lobe-like structure, and reveal, for the first time, complex radio filaments throughout the tail and lobe, and a likely vortex ring behind the shock cone. The cone traces the bow shock caused by the supersonic ($\mathcal{M}\sim2$) interaction between the head-tail radio galaxy NGC 742 and the intragroup medium (IGrM) while the ring may have been formed by interaction between the NGC 742 shock and a previously existing lobe associated with NGC 741. This interaction plausibly compressed and re-accelerated the radio plasma. We estimate that shock-heating by NGC 742 has likely injected $\sim$2-5$\times$10$^{57}$ erg of thermal energy into the central 10 kpc cooling region of the IGrM, potentially affecting the cooling and feedback cycle of NGC 741. A comparison with Chandra X-ray images shows that some of the previously detected thermal filaments align with radio edges, suggesting compression of the IGrM as the relativistic plasma of the NGC 742 tail interacts with the surrounding medium. In spite of their key role in galaxy evolution and several decades of observational efforts, the census of supernova remnants (SNRs) in our Galaxy remains incomplete. Theoretical predictions based on the local supernova rate estimate the expected number of SNRs in the Galaxy to be $\gtrsim$ 1000. By contrast, the number of detected SNRs amounts to about 300. High-resolution, wide-area radio surveys at low frequencies are ideal tools with which to find missing SNRs, given the prominence of these sources at low radio frequencies. We aim to find missing SNRs using proprietary data from the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) at 144~MHz. We used LoTSS total intensity maps of two Galactic regions, one with $39^\mathrm{o} < l < 66^\mathrm{o}$ and $|b|< 2.5^\mathrm{o}$, and the other with $145^\mathrm{o} < l < 150^\mathrm{o}$ and $|b| < 3^\mathrm{o}$, in addition to mid-infrared (MIR) data from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) all-sky survey to search for SNR candidates. We report the discovery of 14 new SNR candidates selected on the basis of their morphology at 144 MHz and a lack of MIR emission. We also follow up on 24 previously reported SNR candidates, inferring their spectral index between the LoTSS frequency (144 MHz) and the frequency at which they were reported. The high resolution and sensitivity of LoTSS observations has resulted in the detection of 14 new SNR candidates. Recent observations have revealed rare, previously unknown flashes of cosmic radio waves lasting from milliseconds to minutes, and with periodicity of minutes to an hour [1-4]. These transient radio signals must originate from sources in the Milky Way, and from coherent emission processes in astrophysical plasma. They are theorised to be produced in the extreme and highly magnetised environments around white dwarfs or neutron stars [5-8]. However, the astrophysical origin of these signals remains contested, and multiple progenitor models may be needed to explain their diverse properties. Here we present the discovery of a transient radio source, ILT J1101+5521, whose roughly minute-long pulses arrive with a periodicity of 125.5 minutes. We find that ILT J1101+5521 is an M dwarf - white dwarf binary system with an orbital period that matches the period of the radio pulses, which are observed when the two stars are in conjunction. The binary nature of ILT J1101+5521 establishes that some long-period radio transients originate from orbital motion modulating the observed emission, as opposed to an isolated rotating star. We conclude that ILT J1101+5521 is likely a polar system where magnetic interaction has synchronised the rotational and orbital periods of the white dwarf [9]. Magnetic interaction and plasma exchange between the two stars may generate the sporadic radio emission. Such mechanisms have been previously theorised [10-13], but not observationally established.

We present the deepest wide-field 115-166 MHz image at sub-arcsecond resolution spanning an area of 2.5 by 2.5 degrees centred at the ELAIS-N1 deep field. To achieve this, we improved the calibration for the International LOFAR Telescope. This enhancement enabled us to efficiently process 32 hrs of data from four different 8-hr observations using the high-band antennas (HBAs) of all 52 stations, covering baselines up to approximately 2,000 km across Europe. The DI calibration was improved by using an accurate sky model and refining the series of calibration steps on the in-field calibrator, while the DD calibration was improved by adopting a more automated approach for selecting the DD calibrators and inspecting the self-calibration on these sources. We also added an additional round of self-calibration for the Dutch core and remote stations in order to refine the solutions for shorter baselines. To complement our highest resolution at 0.3", we also made intermediate resolution wide-field images at 0.6" and 1.2". Our resulting wide-field images achieve a central noise level of 14 muJy/beam at 0.3", doubling the depth and uncovering four times more objects than the Lockman Hole deep field image at comparable resolution but with only 8 hrs of data. Compared to LOFAR imaging without the international stations, we note that due to the increased collecting area and the absence of confusion noise, we reached a point-source sensitivity comparable to a 500-hr ELAIS-N1 6" image with 16 times less observing time. Importantly, we have found that the computing costs for the same amount of data are almost halved (to about 139,000 CPU hrs per 8 hrs of data) compared to previous efforts, though they remain high. The aim of this study is to probe the sub-mJy polarized source population with LOFAR. We present the method used to stack LOFAR polarization datasets, the resulting catalog of polarized sources, and the derived polarized source counts. The ELAIS-N1 field was selected for a polarimetric study at 114.9-177.4 MHz. A total area of 25 deg2 was imaged at 6"- resolution in the Stokes Q and U parameters. Alignment of polarization angles was done both in frequency and in Faraday space before stacking datasets from 19 eight-hour-long epochs. A search for polarized sources was carried out in the final, stacked dataset, and the properties of the detected sources were examined. The depolarization level of sources known to be polarized at 1.4 GHz was quantified. A one-sigma noise level of 19 {\mu}Jy/beam was reached in the central part of the field after stacking. Twenty-five polarized sources were detected above 8\sigma, five of which had not been detected in polarization at any other radio frequencies before. Seven additional polarized components were found by lowering the threshold to 6\sigma at positions corresponding to sources known to be polarized at 1.4 GHz. In two radio galaxies, polarization was detected from both radio lobes, so the final number of associated radio continuum sources is 31. The detected sources are weakly polarized, with a median degree of polarization of 1.75% for the sample of sources detected in polarized emission. The sources previously detected in polarization at 1.4 GHz are significantly depolarized at 150 MHz. The catalog is used to derive the polarized source counts at 150 MHz. Merging galaxy clusters often host spectacular diffuse radio synchrotron sources. These sources can be explained by a non-thermal pool of relativistic electrons accelerated by shocks and turbulence in the intracluster medium. The origin of the pool and details of the cosmic ray transport and acceleration mechanisms in clusters are still open questions. Due to the often extremely steep spectral indices of diffuse radio emission, it is best studied at low frequencies. However, the lowest frequency window available to ground-based telescopes (10-30 MHz) has remained largely unexplored, as radio frequency interference and calibration problems related to the ionosphere become severe. Here, we present LOFAR observations from 16 to 168 MHz targeting the famous cluster Abell 2256. In the deepest-ever images at decametre wavelengths, we detect and resolve the radio halo, radio shock and various steep spectrum sources. We measure standard single power-law behaviour for the radio halo and radio shock spectra and find significant spectral index and curvature fluctuations across the radio halo, indicating an inhomogeneous emitting volume. In contrast to the straight power-law spectra of the large-scale diffuse sources, the various AGN-related sources often show extreme steepening towards higher frequencies and flattening towards low frequencies. We also discover a new fossil plasma source with a steep spectrum between 23 and 144 MHz, with $\alpha=-1.9\pm 0.1$. Finally, by comparing radio and gamma-ray observations, we rule out purely hadronic models for the radio halo origin in Abell 2256, unless the magnetic field strength in the cluster is exceptionally high, which is unsupportable by energetic arguments and inconsistent with the knowledge of other cluster magnetic fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

The largely unexplored decameter radio band (10-30 MHz) provides a unique window for studying a range of astronomical topics, such as auroral emission from exoplanets, inefficient cosmic ray acceleration mechanisms, fossil radio plasma, and free-free absorption. The scarcity of low-frequency studies is mainly due to the severe perturbing effects of the ionosphere. Here we present a calibration strategy that can correct for the ionosphere in the decameter band. We apply this to an observation from the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) between 16 to 30 MHz . The resulting image covers 330 square degrees of sky at a resolution of 45", reaching a sensitivity of 12 mJy/beam. Residual ionospheric effects cause additional blurring ranging between 60 to 100". This represents an order of magnitude improvement in terms of sensitivity and resolution compared to previous decameter band observations. In the region we surveyed, we have identified four fossil plasma sources. These rare sources are believed to contain old, possibly re-energised, radio plasma originating from previous outbursts of active galactic nuclei. At least three of them are situated near the center of low-mass galaxy clusters. Notably, two of these sources display the steepest radio spectral index among all the sources detected at 23 MHz. This indicates that fossil plasma sources constitute the primary population of steep-spectrum sources at these frequencies, emphasising the large discovery potential of ground-based decameter observations., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Recent low-frequency radio observations at 140 MHz discovered a 3 Mpc-long bridge of diffuse emission connecting the galaxy clusters Abell 0399 and Abell 0401. We present follow-up observations at 60 MHz to constrain the spectral index of the bridge, which so far has only been detected at 140 and 144 MHz. We analysed deep (~18 hours) LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Low Band Antenna (LBA) data at 60 MHz to detect the bridge at very low frequencies. We then conducted a multi-frequency study with LOFAR HBA data at 144 MHz and uGMRT data at 400 MHz. Assuming second-order Fermi mechanisms for the re-acceleration of relativistic electrons driven by turbulence in the radio bridge regions, we compare the observed radio spectrum with theoretical synchrotron models. The bridge is detected in the 75'' resolution LOFAR image at 60 MHz and its emission fully connects the region between the two galaxy clusters. Between 60 MHz and 144 MHz we found an integrated spectral index value of -1.44 +\- 0.16 for the bridge emission. For the first time, we produced spectral index and related uncertainties maps for a radio bridge. We produce a radio spectrum, which show significant steepening between 144 and 400 MHz. This detection at low frequencies provides important information on the models of particle acceleration and magnetic field structure on very extended scales. The spectral index gives important clues to the origin of inter-cluster diffuse emission. Radio observations of a few cool-core galaxy clusters have revealed the presence of diffuse emission on cluster scales, similar to what was found in merging clusters in the form of radio halos. These sources might suggest that a minor merger, while not sufficiently energetic to disrupt the cool core, could still trigger particle acceleration in the intracluster medium on scales of hundreds of kpc. We observed with LOFAR at 144 MHz a sample of twelve cool-core galaxy clusters presenting some level of dynamical disturbances, according to X-ray data. We also performed a systematic search of cold fronts in these clusters, re-analysing archival Chandra data. The clusters PSZ1G139.61+24, A1068 (new detection), MS 1455.0+2232, and RX J1720.1+2638 present diffuse radio emission on a cluster scale. This emission is characterised by a double component: a central mini-halo confined by cold fronts and diffuse emission on larger scales, whose radio power at 144 MHz is comparable to that of radio halos detected in merging systems. The cold fronts in A1068 are a new detection. We also found a candidate plasma depletion layer in this cluster. No sloshing features are found in the other eight clusters. Two of them present a mini-halo, with diffuse radio emission confined to the cluster core. We also found a new candidate mini-halo. Whereas, for the remaining five clusters, we did not detect halo-like emission. For clusters without cluster-scale halos, we derived upper limits to the radio halo power. We found that cluster-scale diffuse radio emission is not present in all cool-core clusters when observed at a low frequency, but it is correlated to the presence of cold fronts. This morphology requires a specific configuration of the merger and so it puts some constraints on the turbulence, which deserves to be investigated in the future with theoretical works., Comment: 34 pages, 30 figures. Radio jets are present in a diverse sample of AGN. However, the mechanisms of jet powering are not fully understood, and it is yet unclear to what extent they obey mass-invariant scaling relations, similar to those found for the triggering and fuelling of X-ray selected AGN. We study the incidence of eROSITA/eFEDS X-ray and LOFAR radio AGN as a function of several stellar mass normalised AGN power indicators. A new sample of radio AGN from the LOFAR-eFEDS survey is defined and we publicly release this catalogue, including host galaxy counterparts from the Legacy Survey DR9, LOFAR radio morphologies and host galaxy properties from the complete, spectroscopic (z<0.4) GAMA09 survey. The fraction of GAMA09 galaxies hosting radio, X-ray and both radio and X-ray AGN are calculated as a function of the specific black hole kinetic ($\lambda_{\rm Jet}$) and radiative ($\lambda_{\rm Edd}$) power. The incidence of eFEDS X-ray AGN as a function of $\lambda_{\rm Edd}$ shows the same mass-invariance as found in past studies. Meanwhile, radio AGN, regardless of their morphology, are more likely to be hosted in more massive galaxies, at all $\lambda_{\rm Jet}$. Across the stellar mass range, the compact radio AGN incidence follows the same power-law distribution, showing that it is not only high mass galaxies that host high power radio AGN and vice versa. On the other hand, the incidence of compact and complex radio AGN is boosted at the highest jet powers, diverging from a simple power-law. Interestingly, this increased incidence cannot be explained by more powerful radio AGN lying in more dense environments which could naturally boost their radio luminosity. Overall, we show that statistical incidence studies are a powerful method to probe disk-jet coupling for different AGN accretion modes, although future work on a more reliable determination of jet power for diverse samples of radio AGN is needed., Comment: 30 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Low-frequency radio observations show an increasing number of radio galaxies located in galaxy clusters that display peculiar morphologies and spectral profiles. This is the result of the dynamical interaction of the galaxy with the surrounding medium. Studying this phenomenon is key to understanding the evolution of low-energy relativistic particles in the intracluster medium. We present a multi-frequency study of the three head-tail (HT) radio galaxies and the radio halo in the galaxy cluster ZwCl0634.1+4747. We make use of observations at four frequencies performed with LOFAR LBA (53 MHz), HBA (144 MHz), GMRT (323 MHz) and VLA (1518 MHz) data. The use of extremely low radio frequency observations, such as LOFAR at 53 and 144 MHz, allowed us to detect the extension of the tails up to a distance of ~ 1 Mpc. We extracted spectral profiles along the tails in order to identify possible departures from a pure ageing model, such as the Jaffe-Perola (JP) model, which only involves synchrotron and inverse-Compton losses. We found clear evidence of departures from this simple ageing model, such as surface brightness enhancement and spectral flattening along all of the tails. This can be interpreted as the consequence of particle re-acceleration along the tails. Possible explanations for this behaviour include the interaction between a shock and the radio tails or a turbulence-driven re-acceleration mechanism. We show that the latter scenario is able to reproduce the characteristic features that we observed in our profiles.

We present the first deep (72 hours of observations) radio image of the Euclid Deep Field North (EDFN) obtained with the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) High Band Antenna (HBA) at 144 MHz. The EDFN is the latest addition to the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Deep Fields and these observations represent the first data release for this field. The observations produced a 6" resolution image with a central r.m.s. noise of $32\,\mu$Jy\,beam$^{-1}$. A catalogue of $\sim 23,000$ radio sources above a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) threshold of 5 is extracted from the inner circular 10 deg$^2$ region. We discuss the data analysis and we provide a detailed description of how we derived the catalogue of radio sources and on the issues related to direction-dependent calibration and their effects on the final products. Finally, we derive the radio source counts at 144 MHz in the EDFN using catalogues of mock radio sources to derive the completeness correction factors. The source counts in the EDFN are consistent with those obtained from the first data release of the other LoTSS Deep Fields (ELAIS-N1, Lockman Hole and Bootes), despite the different method adopted to construct the final catalogue and to assess its completeness., Comment: accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the detection of diffuse radio emission with peculiar morphology in the central region of the galaxy cluster Abell 2657. The most striking feature identified in our 144 MHz LOFAR image is a bifurcated radio arc that extends for a projected size of 150-200 kpc. From the analysis of XMM-Newton data, we find clear evidence of gas sloshing in the cluster and a possible dip in X-ray surface brightness between the two radio arcs which deserves confirmation. Interestingly, the synchrotron emission of the bifurcated radio arc is stretched along the sloshing spiral. We compare our observational results with numerical simulations of non-thermal components interacting with gas motions. We suggest that the detected emission may trace a radio bubble shredded by gas sloshing, where relativistic electrons and magnetic fields are expected to be stretched and stirred as a consequence of tangential flows induced by the spiralling gas motion. Lastly, we report on the presence of two thin (6-7 kpc in width) and parallel strands of radio emission embedded in the outer arc that are morphologically similar to the emerging population of non-thermal filaments observed in galaxy clusters, radio galaxies, and the Galactic centre. While this work further demonstrates the complex interplay between thermal and non-thermal components in the intracluster medium, follow-up observations in radio and X-rays are required to firmly determine the origin of the features observed in Abell 2657., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. We combine the LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) second data release (DR2) catalogue with gravitational lensing maps from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) to place constraints on the bias evolution of LoTSS radio galaxies, and on the amplitude of matter perturbations. We construct a flux-limited catalogue, and analyse its harmonic-space cross-correlation with CMB lensing maps from Planck, $C_\ell^{g\kappa}$, as well as its auto-correlation, $C_\ell^{gg}$. We explore the models describing the redshift evolution of the large-scale radio galaxy bias, discriminating between them through the combination of both $C_\ell^{g\kappa}$ and $C_\ell^{gg}$. Fixing the bias evolution, we then use these data to place constraints on the amplitude of large scale density fluctuations. We report the significance of the $C_\ell^{g\kappa}$ signal at a level of $26.6\sigma$. We determine that a linear bias evolution of the form $b_g(z) = b_{g,D} / D(z)$, where $D(z)$ is the growth rate, is able to provide a good description of the data, and measure $b_{g,D} = 1.41 \pm 0.06$ for a sample flux-limited at $1.5\,{\rm mJy}$, for scales $\ell < 250$ for $C_\ell^{gg}$, and $\ell < 500$ for $C_\ell^{g\kappa}$. At the sample's median redshift, we obtain $b(z = 0.82) = 2.34 \pm 0.10$. Using $\sigma_8$ as a free parameter, while keeping other cosmological parameters fixed to the Planck values, we find fluctuations of $\sigma_8 = 0.75^{+0.05}_{-0.04}$. The result is in agreement with weak lensing surveys, and at $1\sigma$ difference with Planck CMB constraints. We also attempt to detect the late-time integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect with LOFAR, but with the current sky coverage, the cross-correlation with CMB temperature maps is consistent with zero. Covering $\sim$5600 deg$^2$ to rms sensitivities of $\sim$70$-$100 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$, the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS-DR2) provides the largest low-frequency ($\sim$150 MHz) radio catalogue to date, making it an excellent tool for large-area radio cosmology studies. In this work, we use LoTSS-DR2 sources to investigate the angular two-point correlation function of galaxies within the survey. We discuss systematics in the data and an improved methodology for generating random catalogues, compared to that used for LoTSS-DR1, before presenting the angular clustering for $\sim$900,000 sources $\geq$$1.5$ mJy and a peak signal-to-noise $\geq$$7.5$ across $\sim$$80\%$ of the observed area. Using the clustering we infer the bias assuming two evolutionary models. When fitting {angular scales of $0.5 \leq\theta<5\,\deg$, using a linear bias model, we find LoTSS-DR2 sources are biased tracers of the underlying matter, with a bias of $b_{C}= 2.14^{+0.22}_{-0.20}$ (assuming constant bias) and $b_{E}(z=0)= 1.79^{+0.15}_{-0.14}$ (for an evolving model, inversely proportional to the growth factor), corresponding to $b_E= 2.81^{+0.24}_{-0.22}$ at the median redshift of our sample, assuming the LoTSS Deep Fields redshift distribution is representative of our data. This reduces to $b_{C}= 2.02^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$ and $b_{E}(z=0)= 1.67^{+0.12}_{-0.12}$ when allowing preferential redshift distributions from the Deep Fields to model our data. We present the first wide area (2.5 x 2.5 deg^2) LOFAR High Band Antenna image at a resolution of 1.2'' x 2'' with a median noise of approximately 80 microJy per beam. It was made from an 8-hour International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) observation of the ELAIS-N1 field at frequencies ranging from 120 to 168 MHz with the most up-to-date ILT imaging methods. This intermediate resolution falls between the highest possible resolution (0.3'') achievable by using all International LOFAR Telescope (ILT) baselines and the standard 6-arcsecond resolution in the LoTSS (LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey) image products utilising the LOFAR Dutch baselines only. This is the first demonstration of the feasibility of imaging using the ILT at a resolution of around 1'', which provides unique information on source morphology at scales that fall below the surface brightness limits at higher resolutions. The total calibration and imaging computational time is approximately 52,000 core hours, nearly 5 times more than required to produce a 6'' resolution image. We also present a radio source catalogue containing 2263 sources detected over the 2.5 x 2.5 deg^2 image of the ELAIS-N1 field, with a peak intensity threshold of 5.5 sigma. The catalogue has been cross-matched with the LoTSS deep ELAIS-N1 field radio catalogue, and its flux density and positional accuracy have been investigated and corrected accordingly. We find that approximately 80% of sources which we expect to be detectable based on their peak brightness in the LoTSS 6'' resolution image are detected in this image, which is approximately a factor of two higher than for 0.3'' resolution imaging in the Lockman Hole, implying there is a wealth of information on these intermediate scales., Comment: 20 pages, 19 figures, revised manuscript submitted to A&A

The Time Domain Field (TDF) near the North Ecliptic Pole in JWST's continuous-viewing zone will become a premier "blank field" for extragalactic science. JWST/NIRCam data in a 16 arcmin$^2$ portion of the TDF identify 4.4 $\mu$m counterparts for 62 of 63 3 GHz sources with S(3 GHz) > 5 {\mu}Jy. The one unidentified radio source may be a lobe of a nearby Seyfert galaxy, or it may be an infrared-faint radio source. The bulk properties of the radio-host galaxies are consistent with those found by previous work: redshifts range from 0.14 to 4.4 with a median redshift of 1.33. The radio emission arises primarily from star formation in $\sim 2/3$ of the sample and from an active galactic nucleus in $\sim 1/3$, but just over half the sample shows evidence for an AGN either in the spectral energy distribution or by radio excess. All but three counterparts are brighter than magnitude 23 AB at 4.4 $\mu$m, and the exquisite resolution of JWST identifies correct counterparts for sources for which observations with lower angular resolution would mis-identify a nearby bright source as the counterpart when the correct one is faint and red. Galaxy cluster mergers are natural consequences of the structure formation in the Universe. Such events involve a large amount of energy ($\sim 10^{63}$ erg) dissipated during the process. Part of this energy can be channelled in particle acceleration and magnetic field amplification, enhancing non-thermal emission of the intra- and inter-cluster environment. Recently, low-frequency observations have detected a bridge of diffuse synchrotron emission connecting two merging galaxy clusters, Abell 399 and Abell 401. Such a result provides clear observational evidence of relativistic particles and magnetic fields in-between clusters. In this work, we have used LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations at 144 MHz to study for the first time the polarized emission in the A399-A401 bridge region. No polarized emission was detected from the bridge region. Assuming a model where polarization is generated by multiple shocks, depolarization can be due to Faraday dispersion in the foreground medium with respect to the shocks. We constrained its Faraday dispersion to be greater than 0.10 rad m$^{-2}$ at 95% confidence level, which corresponds to an average magnetic field of the bridge region greater than 0.46 nG (or 0.41 nG if we include regions of the Faraday spectrum that are contaminated by Galactic emission). This result is largely consistent with the predictions from numerical simulations for Mpc regions where the gas density is $\sim 300$ times larger than the mean gas density., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures; accepted in A&A

We present the serendipitous discovery of 8 distant ($>$ 50 pc) late M dwarfs with plausible associated radio emission at 144 MHz. The M dwarf nature of our sources has been confirmed with optical spectroscopy performed using HET/LRS2 and Subaru/FOCAS, and their radio flux densities are within the range of 0.5-1.0 mJy at 144 MHz. Considering the radio-optical source separation and source densities of the parent catalogues, we suggest that it is statistically probable the M dwarfs are associated with the radio emission. However, it remains plausible that for some of the sources the radio emission originates from an optically faint and red galaxy hiding behind the M dwarf. The isotropic radio luminosities ($\sim10^{17-18}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$) of the M dwarfs suggest that if the association is real, the radio emission is likely driven by a coherent emission process produced via plasma or electron-cyclotron maser instability processes, which is potentially caused by binary interaction. Long term monitoring in the radio and high-resolution radio follow-up observations are necessary to search for any variability and pinpoint the radio emission to determine whether our tentative conclusion that these ultracool dwarfs are radio emitting is correct. If the low-frequency radio emission is conclusively associated with the M dwarfs, this would reveal a new population of optically faint and distant ($>$ 50 pc) radio emitting M dwarfs., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

The second data release of the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) covers 27% of the northern sky, with a total area of $\sim 5,700$ deg$^2$. The high angular resolution of LOFAR with Dutch baselines (6 arcsec) allows us to carry out optical identifications of a large fraction of the detected radio sources without further radio followup; however, the process is made more challenging by the many extended radio sources found in LOFAR images as a result of its excellent sensitivity to extended structure. In this paper we present source associations and identifications for sources in the second data release based on optical and near-infrared data, using a combination of a likelihood-ratio cross-match method developed for our first data release, our citizen science project Radio Galaxy Zoo: LOFAR, and new approaches to algorithmic optical identification, together with extensive visual inspection by astronomers. We also present spectroscopic or photometric redshifts for a large fraction of the optical identifications. In total 4,116,934 radio sources lie in the area with good optical data, of which 85% have an optical or infrared identification and 58% have a good redshift estimate. We demonstrate the quality of the dataset by comparing it with earlier optically identified radio surveys. This is by far the largest ever optically identified radio catalogue, and will permit robust statistical studies of star-forming and radio-loud active galaxies., Comment: 29 pages. The composition of relativistic gamma-ray burst (GRB) jets and their emission mechanisms are still debated, and they could be matter or magnetically dominated. One way to distinguish these mechanisms arises because a Poynting flux dominated jet may produce low-frequency radio emission during the energetic prompt phase, through magnetic reconnection at the shock front. We present a search for radio emission coincident with three GRB X-ray flares with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), in a rapid response mode follow-up of long GRB 210112A (at z~2) with a 2 hour duration, where our observations began 511 seconds after the initial swift-BAT trigger. Using timesliced imaging at 120-168 MHz, we obtain upper limits at 3 sigma confidence of 42 mJy averaging over 320 second snapshot images, and 87 mJy averaging over 60 second snapshot images. LOFAR's fast response time means that all three potential radio counterparts to X-ray flares are observable after accounting for dispersion at the estimated source redshift. Furthermore, the radio pulse in the magnetic wind model was expected to be detectable at our observing frequency and flux density limits which allows us to disfavour a region of parameter space for this GRB. Turbulence introduced into the intra-cluster medium (ICM) through cluster merger events transfers energy to non-thermal components, and can trigger the formation of diffuse synchrotron radio sources. Typical diffuse sources in the forms of giant radio halos and mini-halos are found in merging and relaxed cool core galaxy clusters, respectively. On the other hand, recent observations have revealed an increasing complexity of the non-thermal phenomenology. Abell 2142 (A2142) is a mildly disturbed cluster that exhibits uncommon thermal and non-thermal properties. It is known to host a hybrid halo consisting of two components (H1 and H2), namely a mini-halo-like and an enigmatic elongated radio halo-like structure. We aim to investigate the properties, origin, and connections of each component. We present deep LOFAR observations of A2142 in the frequency ranges $30-78$ MHz and $120-168$ MHz. With complementary multi-frequency radio and X-ray data, we analyse the radio spectral properties of the halo and assess the connection between the non-thermal and thermal components of the ICM. We detected a third radio component (H3), which extends over the cluster volume on scales $\sim 2$ Mpc, embeds H1 and H2, and has a morphology that roughly follows the thermal ICM distribution. The radio spectral index is moderately steep in H1 ($\alpha=1.09\pm 0.02$) and H2 ($\alpha=1.15\pm 0.02$), but is steeper ($\alpha=1.57\pm 0.20$) in H3. The analysis of the thermal and non-thermal properties allowed us to discuss possible formation scenarios for each radio component. Turbulence from sloshing motions of low-entropy gas on different scales may be responsible for the origin of H1 and H2. Many relaxed cool-core clusters host diffuse radio emission on scales of hundreds of kiloparsecs: mini-haloes. However, the mechanism responsible for generating them, as well as their connection with central active galactic nuclei, is elusive and many questions related to their physical properties and origins remain unanswered. This paper presents new radio observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 1413 performed with MeerKAT (L-band; 872 to 1712 MHz) and LOFAR HBA (120 to 168 MHz) as part of a statistical and homogeneous census of mini-haloes. Abell 1413 is unique among mini-halo clusters as it is a moderately-disturbed non-cool-core cluster. Our study reveals an asymmetric mini-halo up to 584 kpc in size at 1283 MHz, twice as large as first reported at similar frequencies. The spectral index is flatter than previously reported, with an integrated value of $\alpha = -1.01 \pm 0.06$, shows significant spatial variation, and a tentative radial steepening. We studied the point-to-point X-ray/radio surface brightness correlation to investigate the thermal/non-thermal connection: our results show a strong connection between these components, with a super-linear slope of $b = 1.63 \pm 0.10$ at 1283 MHz and $b = 1.20 \pm 0.12$ at 145 MHz. We also explore the X-ray surface brightness/radio spectral index correlation, finding a slope of $b = 0.59 \pm 0.11$. Both investigations support the evidence of spectral steepening. Finally, in the context of understanding the particle acceleration mechanism, we present a simple theoretical model which demonstrates that hybrid scenarios - secondary electrons (re-)accelerated by turbulence - reproduce a super-linear correlation slope., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables. The Virgo cluster is the nearest massive galaxy cluster and thus a prime target to study astrophysical processes in dense large-scale environments. In the radio band, we can probe the non-thermal components of the inter-stellar medium (ISM), intracluster medium (ICM) and of active galactic nuclei (AGN). With the ViCTORIA (Virgo Cluster multi-Telescope Observations in Radio of Interacting galaxies and AGN) project, we are carrying out multiple wide-field surveys of the Virgo cluster at different frequencies. We aim to investigate the impact of the environment on the evolution of galaxies and the contribution of AGN to the ICM-heating, from the inner cluster regions out to beyond the virial radius. We present a survey of the cluster at 120-168 MHz using LOFAR. We image a 132 deg$^2$ region of the cluster, reaching an order of magnitude greater sensitivity than existing wide-field radio surveys of this field at three times higher spatial resolution compared to other low-frequency observations. We developed a tailored data processing strategy to subtract the bright central radio galaxy M87 from the data. This allowed us to correct for the systematic effects due to ionospheric variation as a function of time and direction. In the final mosaic with a resolution of 9"x5", we reach a median noise level of 140 ${\mu}$Jy/beam inside the virial radius and 280 ${\mu}$Jy/beam for the full area. We detect 112 Virgo member galaxies and 114 background galaxies. In at least 18 cases, the radio morphology of the cluster member galaxies shows clear signs of ram-pressure stripping. This includes three previously unreported candidates. In addition, we reveal for the first time 150 kpc long tails from a previous epoch of AGN activity for NGC 4472 (M 49). While no cluster-scale diffuse radio sources are discovered, we find the presence of an extended radio signature of the W$'$-group., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Cosmological simulations predict the presence of warm hot thermal gas in the cosmic filaments that connect galaxy clusters. This gas is thought to constitute an important part of the missing baryons in the Universe. In addition to the thermal gas, cosmic filaments could contain a population of relativistic particles and magnetic fields. A detection of magnetic fields in filaments can constrain early magnetogenesis in the cosmos. So far, the resulting diffuse synchrotron emission has only been indirectly detected. We present our search for thermal and non-thermal diffuse emission from inter-cluster regions of 106 paired galaxy clusters by stacking the $0.6-2.3$~keV X-ray and 144~MHz radio data obtained with the eROSITA telescope on board the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) observatory and LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), respectively. The stacked data do not show the presence of X-ray and radio diffuse emission in the inter-cluster regions. This could be due to the sensitivity of the data sets and/or the limited number of cluster pairs used in this study. Assuming a constant radio emissivity in the filaments, we find that the mean radio emissivity is not higher than $1.2\times10^{-44}\,{\rm erg \, s^{-1} \, cm^{-3} \, Hz^{-1}}$. Under equipartition conditions, our upper limit on the mean emissivity translates to an upper limit of $\sim75\,{\rm nG}$ for the mean magnetic field strength in the filaments, depending on the spectral index and the minimum energy cutoff. Source classifications, stellar masses and star formation rates are presented for 80,000 radio sources from the first data release of the Low Frequency Array Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) Deep Fields, which represents the widest deep radio survey ever undertaken. Using deep multi-wavelength data spanning from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared, spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting is carried out for all of the LoTSS-Deep host galaxies using four different SED codes, two of which include modelling of the contributions from an active galactic nucleus (AGN). Comparing the results of the four codes, galaxies that host a radiative AGN are identified, and an optimised consensus estimate of the stellar mass and star-formation rate for each galaxy is derived. Those galaxies with an excess of radio emission over that expected from star formation are then identified, and the LoTSS-Deep sources are divided into four classes: star-forming galaxies, radio-quiet AGN, and radio-loud high-excitation and low-excitation AGN. Ninety-five per cent of the sources can be reliably classified, of which more than two-thirds are star-forming galaxies, ranging from normal galaxies in the nearby Universe to highly-starbursting systems at z>4. Star-forming galaxies become the dominant population below 150-MHz flux densities of about 1 mJy, accounting for 90 per cent of sources at a 150-MHz flux density of 100 microJy. Radio-quiet AGN comprise around 10 per cent of the overall population. Many galaxy clusters show diffuse cluster-scale emission in the form of radio halos, showing that magnetic fields and relativistic electrons are mixed in with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). There is general agreement that the origin of radio halos is connected to turbulence, generated during cluster mergers. Statistical studies of large samples of galaxy clusters in the radio band have the potential to unveil the connection between the properties of radio halos and the mass and dynamics of the host clusters. Previous studies have been limited to massive clusters and based on a small number of radio halos. The aim of this paper is to investigate the scaling relation between the radio power of radio halos and the mass of the host clusters at low frequencies and down to lower cluster masses. We analysed the clusters from the second catalogue of Planck Sunyaev Zel'dovich sources that lie within the 5634 sq deg covered by the second Data Release of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey. We derived the correlation between the radio power and the mass of the host clusters and we investigated the distribution of clusters without radio halos with respect to the correlation. We use X-ray observations to classify the dynamical state of clusters and investigate its role on the power of radio halos. We found a correlation between the power of radio halos at 150 MHz and the mass of the host clusters down to 3e14 Msun. This correlation has a large scatter, part of which can be attributed to the different dynamical states of host clusters. We used two statistical test to show that the distribution of clusters with and without (upper limits) radio halos in the mass-radio power diagram is not compatible with a single correlation and that it is also not compatible with clusters being uniformly distributed below an upper envelope constituted by the correlation., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, submitted to A&A

We present the peculiar case of PSZ2G091.83+26.11 at z=0.822. This cluster hosts a Mpc-scale radio halo and an elongated radio source, whose location with the respect to the intracluster medium (ICM) distribution and to the cluster centre is not consistent with a simple merger scenario. We use VLA data at 1-4 GHz to investigate the spectral and polarisation properties of the diffuse radio emission. We combine them with previously published data from LOFAR n the 120-168 MHz band, and from the uGMRT at 250-500 and 550-900 MHz. We also complement the radio data with Chandra X-ray observations to compare the thermal and non-thermal emission of the cluster. The elongated radio emission is visible up to 3.0 GHz and has an integrated spectral index of $-1.24\pm0.03$, with a steepening from $-0.89\pm0.03$ to $-1.39\pm0.03$. These values correspond to Mach numbers $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,int}=3.0\pm0.19$ and $\mathcal{M}_{\rm radio,inj}=2.48\pm0.15$. Chandra data reveals a surface brightness discontinuity at the location of the radio source, with a compression factor of $\mathcal{C}=2.22^{+0.39}_{-0.30}$ (i.e. $\mathcal{M}_{\rm Xray}=1.93^{+0.42}_{-0.32}$). We also find that the source is polarised at GHz frequencies. We estimate an intrinsic polarisation fraction of $\sim0.2$, a Rotation Measure of $\sim50~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$ (including the Galactic contribution) and an external depolarisation of $\sim60~{\rm rad~m^{-2}}$. The $B$-vectors are aligned with the major axis of the source, suggesting magnetic field compression. Hence, we classify this source as a radio relic. We also find a linear/super-linear correlation between the non-thermal and thermal emission. We propose an off-axis merger and/or multiple merger events to explain the position and orientation of the relic. The vast majority of extragalactic compact continuum radio sources are associated with star formation or jets from (super)massive black holes and, as such, are more likely to be found in association with starburst galaxies or early-type galaxies. Two new populations of radio sources were recently identified: (a) compact and persistent sources (PRSs) associated with fast radio bursts (FRBs) in dwarf galaxies and (b) compact sources in dwarf galaxies that could belong to the long-sought population of intermediate-mass black holes. Despite the interesting aspects of these newly found sources, the current sample size is small, limiting scrutiny of the underlying population. Here, we present a search for compact radio sources coincident with dwarf galaxies. We search the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey (LoTSS), the most sensitive low-frequency (144 MHz central frequency) large-area survey for optically thin synchrotron emission to date. Exploiting the high spatial resolution (6 arcsec) and low astrometric uncertainty (~0.2 arcsec) of the LoTSS, we match its compact sources to the compiled sample of dwarf galaxies in the Census of the Local Universe, an H alpha survey with the Palomar Observatory 48 inch Samuel Oschin Telescope. We identify 29 over-luminous compact radio sources, evaluate the probability of chance alignment within the sample, investigate the potential nature of these sources, and evaluate their volumetric density and volumetric rate. While optical line-ratio diagnostics on the nebular lines from the host galaxies support a star-formation origin rather than an AGN origin, future high-angular-resolution radio data are necessary to ascertain the origin of the radio sources. In the nearby universe jets from AGN are observed to have a dramatic impact on their surrounding extragalactic environment. Their effect at the `cosmic noon' (z>1.5), the epoch when star formation and AGN activity peak, is instead much less constrained. Here we present a study of the giant (750 kpc) radio galaxy 103025+052430 located at the centre of a protocluster at redshift z=1.7, with a focus on its interaction with the external medium. We present new LOFAR observations at 144 MHz, which we combine with VLA 1.4 GHz and 0.5-7 keV Chandra archival data. The new map at 144 MHz confirms that the source has a complex morphology, possibly consistent with the `hybrid morphology' classification. The large size of the source gave us the possibility to perform a resolved radio spectral index analysis, a very unique opportunity for a source at such high redshift. This reveals a tentative flattening of the radio spectral index at the edge of the backflow in the Western lobe, which might be indicating plasma compression. The spatial coincidence between this region and the thermal X-ray bubble C suggests a causal connection between the two. Contrary to previous estimates for the bright X-ray component A, we find that inverse Compton scattering between the radio-emitting plasma of the Eastern lobe and the CMB photons can account for a large fraction (~45%-80%) of its total 0.5-7 keV measured flux. Finally, the X-ray bubble C, which is consistent with a thermal origin, is found to be significantly overpressurised with respect to the ambient medium. This suggests that it will tend to expand and release its energy in the surroundings, contributing to the overall intracluster medium heating. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) is the only existing radio interferometer able to observe at ultra-low frequencies (<100 MHz) with high resolution (<15") and high sensitivity (<1 mJy/beam). To exploit these capabilities, the LOFAR Surveys Key Science Project is using the LOFAR Low Band Antenna (LBA) to carry out a sensitive wide-area survey at 41-66 MHz named the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey (LoLSS). LoLSS is covering the whole northern sky above declination 24 deg with a resolution of 15" and a sensitivity of 1-2 mJy/beam (1 sigma) depending on declination, field properties, and observing conditions. Here we present the first data release. An automated pipeline was used to reduce the 95 fields included in this data release. The data reduction procedures developed for this project have general application and are currently being used to process LOFAR LBA interferometric observations. Compared to the preliminary release, direction-dependent errors have been corrected for during the calibration process. This results in a typical sensitivity of 1.55 mJy/beam at the target resolution of 15". The first data release of the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey covers 650 sqdeg in the HETDEX spring field. The resultant data products released to the community include mosaic images (I and V Stokes) of the region, and a catalogue of 42463 detected sources and related Gaussian components used to describe sources' morphologies. Separate catalogues for 6 in-band frequencies are also released. The first data release of LoLSS shows that, despite the influences of the ionosphere, LOFAR can conduct large-scale surveys in the frequency window 42-66 MHz with unprecedentedly high sensitivity and resolution. Extended radio sources in the sky require a dense sampling of short baselines to be properly imaged by interferometers. This problem arises in many areas of radio astronomy, such as in the study of galaxy clusters, which may host Mpc-scale diffuse synchrotron sources in the form of radio halos. In clusters where no radio halos are detected, owing to intrinsic absence of emission or extrinsic (instrumental and/or observational) effects, it is possible to determine upper limits. We consider a sample of Planck galaxy clusters from the Second Data Release of the LOFAR Two Meter Sky Survey (LoTSS-DR2) where no radio halos are detected. We use this sample to test the capabilities of LOFAR to recover diffuse extended emission and derive upper limits. Through the injection technique, we simulate radio halos with various surface brightness profiles. We then predict the corresponding visibilities and image them along with the real visibilities. This method allows us to test the fraction of flux density losses owing to inadequate uv-coverage and obtain thresholds at which the mock emission becomes undetectable by visual inspection. The dense uv-coverage of LOFAR at short spacings allows to recover $\gtrsim90\%$ of the flux density of targets with sizes up to $\sim 15'$. We find a relation that provides upper limits based on the image noise and extent (in terms of number of beams) of the mock halo. This relation can be safely adopted to obtain upper limits without injecting when artifacts introduced by the subtraction of the discrete sources are negligible in the central region of the cluster. Otherwise, the injection process and visual inspection of the images are necessary to determine more reliable limits. Diffuse cluster-scale synchrotron radio emission is discovered in an increasing number of galaxy clusters in the form of radio halos (RHs), probing the presence of relativistic electrons and magnetic fields in the intra-cluster medium. The favoured scenario to explain their origin is that they trace turbulent regions generated during cluster mergers where particles are re-accelerated. In this framework, RHs are expected to probe cluster dynamics and are predicted to be more frequent in massive systems. Statistical studies are important to study the connection of RHs with cluster dynamics and to constrain theoretical models. Furthermore, low-frequency surveys can shed light on the existence of RHs with very steep radio-spectra, a key prediction of turbulent models. We study the properties of RHs from clusters of the second catalog of Planck Sunyaev Zel'dovich detected sources that lie within the 5634 deg^2 covered by the second Data Release (DR2) of the LOFAR Two-meter Sky Survey. We find that the number of observed RHs, their radio flux density and redshift distributions are in line with what is expected in the framework of the re-acceleration scenario. In addition, the fraction of clusters with RHs increases with the cluster mass, confirming the leading role of the gravitational process of cluster formation in the generation of RHs. These models predict a large fraction of RHs with very steep spectrum in the DR2 Planck sample, this will be tested in future studies, yet a comparison of the occurrence of halos in GMRT and LOFAR samples indeed shows a larger occurrence of RHs at lower frequencies suggesting the presence of a number of very steep spectrum RH that is preferentially detected by LOFAR. Context. It is well-established that shock waves in the intracluster medium launched by galaxy cluster mergers can produce synchrotron emission, which is visible to us at radio frequencies as radio relics. However, the particle acceleration mechanism producing these relics is still not fully understood. It is also unclear how relics relate to radio halos, which trace merger-induced turbulence in the intracluster medium. Aims. We aim to perform the first statistical analysis of radio relics in a mass-selected sample of galaxy clusters, using homogeneous observations. Methods. We analysed all relics observed by the Low Frequency Array Two Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) at 144 MHz, hosted by galaxy clusters in the second Planck catalogue of SZ sources (PSZ2). We measured and compared the relic properties in a uniform, unbiased way. In particular, we developed a method to describe the characteristic downstream width in a statistical manner. Additionally, we searched for differences between radio relic-hosting clusters with and without radio halos. Results. We find that, in our sample, $\sim$ 10% of galaxy clusters host at least one radio relic. We confirm previous findings, at higher frequencies, of a correlation between the relic-cluster centre distance and the longest linear size, as well as the radio relic power and cluster mass. However, our findings suggest that we are still missing a population of low-power relics. We also find that relics are wider than theoretically expected, even with optimistic downstream conditions. A Faraday rotation measure (RM) catalogue, or RM Grid, is a valuable resource for the study of cosmic magnetism. Using the second data release (DR2) from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS), we have produced a catalogue of 2461 extragalactic high-precision RM values across 5720 deg$^{2}$ of sky (corresponding to a polarized source areal number density of $\sim$0.43 deg$^{-2}$). The linear polarization and RM properties were derived using RM synthesis from the Stokes $Q$ and $U$ channel images at an angular resolution of 20'' across a frequency range of 120 to 168 MHz with a channel bandwidth of 97.6 kHz. The fraction of total intensity sources ($>1$ mJy beam$^{-1}$) found to be polarized was $\sim$0.2%. The median detection threshold was 0.6 mJy beam$^{-1}$ ($8\sigma_{QU}$), with a median RM uncertainty of 0.06 rad m$^{-2}$ (although a systematic uncertainty of up to 0.3 rad m$^{-2}$ is possible, after the ionosphere RM correction). The median degree of polarization of the detected sources is 1.8%, with a range of 0.05% to 31%. Comparisons with cm-wavelength RMs indicate minimal amounts of Faraday complexity in the LoTSS detections, making them ideal sources for RM Grid studies. Host galaxy identifications were obtained for 88% of the sources, along with redshifts for 79% (both photometric and spectroscopic), with the median redshift being 0.6. The focus of the current catalogue was on reliability rather than completeness, and we expect future versions of the LoTSS RM Grid to have a higher areal number density. Brown dwarfs display Jupiter-like auroral phenomena such as magnetospheric H$\alpha$ emission and coherent radio emission. Coherent radio emission is a probe of magnetospheric acceleration mechanisms and provides a direct measurement of the magnetic field strength at the emitter's location, both of which are difficult to access by other means. Observations of the coldest brown dwarfs (spectral types T and Y) are particularly interesting as their magnetospheric phenomena may be very similar to those in gas-giant exoplanets. Here we present 144 MHz radio and infrared adaptive optics observations of the brown dwarf WISEP J101905.63+652954.2 made using the LOFAR and Keck telescopes respectively. The radio data shows pulsed highly circularly polarised emission which yields a rotation rate of $0.32\pm0.03$ hr$^{-1}$. The infrared imaging reveals the source to be a binary with a projected separation of $423.0\pm1.6$ mas between components of spectral type T5.$5\pm0.5$ and T7.$0\pm0.5$. With a simple "toy model" we show that the radio emission can in principle be powered by the interaction between the two dwarfs with a mass-loss rates of at least $25$ times the Jovian value. WISEP J101905.63+652954.2 is interesting because it is the first pulsed methane dwarf detected in a low radio-frequency search. Unlike previous gigahertz-frequency searches that were only sensitive to objects with kiloGauss fields, our low-frequency search is sensitive to surface magnetic fields of $\approx 50$ Gauss and above which might reveal the coldest radio-loud objects down to planetary mass-scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present the detection of 68 sources from the most sensitive radio survey in circular polarisation conducted to date. We use the second data release of the 144 MHz LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey to produce circularly-polarised maps with median 140 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ noise and resolution of 20$''$ for $\approx$27% of the northern sky (5634 deg$^{2}$). The leakage of total intensity into circular polarisation is measured to be $\approx$0.06%, and our survey is complete at flux densities $\geq1$ mJy. A detection is considered reliable when the circularly-polarised fraction exceeds 1%. We find the population of circularly-polarised sources is composed of four distinct classes: stellar systems, pulsars, active galactic nuclei, and sources unidentified in the literature. The stellar systems can be further separated into chromospherically-active stars, M dwarfs, and brown dwarfs. Based on the circularly-polarised fraction and lack of an optical counterpart, we show it is possible to infer whether the unidentified sources are likely unknown pulsars or brown dwarfs. The hot plasma within merging galaxy clusters is predicted to be filled with shocks and turbulence that may convert part of their kinetic energy into relativistic electrons and magnetic fields generating synchrotron radiation. Analyzing Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) observations of the galaxy cluster Abell 2255, we show evidence of radio synchrotron emission distributed over very large scales of at least 5 megaparsec. The pervasive radio emission witnesses that shocks and turbulence efficiently transfer kinetic energy into relativistic particles and magnetic fields in a region that extends up to the cluster outskirts. The strength of the emission requires a magnetic field energy density at least 100 times higher than expected from a simple compression of primordial fields, presumably implying that dynamo operates efficiently also in the cluster periphery. The footprint of LoTSS-DR2 covers 309 PSZ2 galaxy clusters, 83 of which host a radio halo and 26 host a radio relic(s). It provides us an excellent opportunity to statistically study the properties of extended cluster radio sources, especially their connection with merging activities. We aim to quantify cluster dynamic states to investigate their relation with the occurrence of extended radio sources. We also search for connections between intracluster medium (ICM) turbulence and nonthermal characteristics of radio halos in the LoTSS-DR2. We analyzed XMM-Newton and Chandra archival X-ray data and computed concentration parameters and centroid shifts that indicate the dynamic states of the clusters. We also performed a power spectral analysis of the X-ray surface brightness (SB) fluctuations to investigate large-scale density perturbations and estimate the turbulent velocity dispersion. The power spectral analysis results in a large scatter density fluctuation amplitude. We therefore only found a marginal anticorrelation between density fluctuations and cluster relaxation state, and we did not find a correlation between density fluctuations and radio halo power. Nevertheless, the injected power for particle acceleration calculated from turbulent dissipation is correlated with the radio halo power, where the best-fit unity slope supports the turbulent (re)acceleration scenario. Two different acceleration models, transit-time damping and adiabatic stochastic acceleration, cannot be distinguished due to the large scatter of the estimated turbulent Mach number. We introduced a new quantity $[kT\cdot Y_X]_{r_\mathrm{RH}}$, which is proportional to the turbulent acceleration power assuming a constant Mach number. We present LOFAR imaging observations from the April/May 2020 active episode of magnetar SGR 1935+2154. We place the earliest radio limits on persistent emission following the low-luminosity fast radio burst FRB 200428 from the magnetar. We also perform an image-plane search for transient emission and find no radio flares during our observations. We examine post-FRB radio upper limits in the literature and find that all are consistent with the multi-wavelength afterglow predicted by the synchrotron maser shock model interpretation of FRB 200428. However, early optical observations appear to rule out the simple versions of the afterglow model with constant-density circumburst media. We show that these constraints may be mitigated by adapting the model for a wind-like environment, but only for a limited parameter range. In addition, we suggest that late-time non-thermal particle acceleration occurs within the afterglow model when the shock is no longer relativistic, which may prove vital for detecting afterglows from other Galactic FRBs. We also discuss future observing strategies for verifying either magnetospheric or maser shock FRB models via rapid radio observations of Galactic magnetars and nearby FRBs., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

High redshift quasars ($z>5$) that also shine brightly at radio wavelengths are unique signposts of supermassive black hole activity in the early universe. However, bright radio sources at $z\ge5$ are extremely rare and therefore we have started a campaign to search for new high-$z$ quasars by combining an optical dropout selection driven by the $g$, $r$, and $z$ bands from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) Legacy Imaging Surveys with low-frequency radio observations from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). Currently, LoTSS covers a large fraction of the northern sky (5720 deg$^2$) to such a depth (median noise level of 83 $\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$) that about 30% of the general quasar population is detected $-$ which is a factor of 5-10 more than previous large sky radio surveys such as NVSS and FIRST, respectively. In this paper, we present the discovery of 20 new quasars (and the independent confirmation of 4) between $4.9\leq z\leq 6.6$. Out of the 24 quasars, 21 satisfy the traditional radio-loudness criterion of $R=f_{5\text{GHz}}/f_{4400A} > 10$, with the full sample spanning $R\sim$6-1000, thereby more than doubling the sample of known radio-loud quasars at $z \ge 5$. Our radio detection requirement strongly decreases the contamination of stellar sources and allows one to select these quasars in a broad redshift range. Despite selecting our quasar candidates using fewer and less conservative colour restrictions, both the optical and near-infrared colours, Ly$\alpha$ emission line properties, and dust reddening, $E(B-V)$, measurements of our quasar sample do not deviate from the known radio-quiet quasar population, suggesting similar optical quasar properties of the radio-loud and radio-quiet quasar population at high-$z$. We examine the particle acceleration mechanism in the Mpc-scale bridge between Abell 399 and Abell 401 and assess in particular if the synchrotron emission originates from first-order or second-order Fermi re-acceleration. We use deep (~40 hours) LOw-Frequency ARray (LOFAR) observations from Abell 399 and Abell 401 and apply improved direction-dependent calibration to produce deep radio images at three different resolutions at 144 MHz. With a point-to-point analysis we find in the bridge trends between the radio emission from our new maps and X-ray emission from an XMM Newton observation. By analyzing our observations and results, we argue that second-order Fermi re-acceleration is currently the most favoured process to explain the emission from the radio bridge, where past AGN activity may be responsible for the supply of fossil plasma needed for in-situ re-acceleration. The radio halos from Abell 401 and Abell 399 are also consistent with a second-order Fermi re-acceleration model.

The central regions of galaxy clusters are permeated by magnetic fields and filled with relativistic electrons. When clusters merge, the magnetic fields are amplified and relativistic electrons are re-accelerated by turbulence in the intra cluster medium. These electrons reach energies of 1 -- 10 GeV and, in the presence of magnetic fields, produce diffuse radio halos that typically cover an area of ~1 square Mpc. Here we report observations of four clusters whose radio halos are embedded in much more extended, diffuse radio emission, filling a volume 30 times larger than that of radio halos. The emissivity in these larger features is about 20 times lower than the emissivity in radio halos. We conclude that relativistic electrons and magnetic fields extend far beyond radio halos, and that the physical conditions in the outer regions of the clusters are quite different from those in the radio halos., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, Nature in press

We report the discovery of a ring of low surface brightness radio emission around the Calvera pulsar, a high Galactic latitude, isolated neutron star, in the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS). It is centered at $\alpha=14\mathrm{h}11\mathrm{m}12.6\mathrm{s}$, $\delta=+79^\mathrm{o}23'15"$, has inner and outer radii of $14.2'$ and $28.4'$, and an integrated flux density at 144 MHz of $1.08\pm0.15$ Jy. The ring center is offset by $4.9'$ from the location of the Calvera pulsar. H$\alpha$ observations with the Isaac Newton Telescope show no coincident optical emission, but do show a small ($\sim20"$) optical structure internal to the ring. We consider three possible interpretations for the ring: that it is an H~II region, a supernova remnant (SNR), or an Odd Radio Circle (ORC). The positional coincidence of the ring, the pulsar, and an X-ray-emitting non-equilibrium ionisation plasma previously detected, lead us to prefer the SNR interpretation. If the source is indeed a SNR and its association with the Calvera pulsar is confirmed, then Calvera's SNR, or G118.4+37.0, will be one of few SNRs in the Galactic halo., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Identifying active galactic nuclei (AGN) and isolating their contribution to a galaxy's energy budget is crucial for studying the co-evolution of AGN and their host galaxies. Brightness temperature ($T_b$) measurements from high-resolution radio observations at GHz frequencies are widely used to identify AGN. Here we investigate using new sub-arcsecond imaging at 144 MHz with the International LOFAR Telescope to identify AGN using $T_b$ in the Lockman Hole field. We use ancillary data to validate the 940 AGN identifications, finding 83 percent of sources have AGN classifications from SED fitting and/or photometric identifications, yielding 160 new AGN identifications. Considering the multi-wavelength classifications, brightness temperature criteria select over half of radio-excess sources, 32 percent of sources classified as radio-quiet AGN, and 20 percent of sources classified as star-forming galaxies. Infrared colour-colour plots and comparison with what we would expect to detect based on peak brightness in 6 arcsec LOFAR maps, imply that the star-forming galaxies and sources at low flux densities have a mixture of star-formation and AGN activity. We separate the radio emission from star-formation and AGN in unresolved, $T_b$-identified AGN with no significant radio excess and find the AGN comprises $0.49\pm 0.16$ of the radio luminosity. Overall the non-radio excess AGN show evidence for having a variety of different radio emission mechanisms, which can provide different pathways for AGN and galaxy co-evolution.
