AC losses in a tri-axial superconducting cable are examined. Results suggest that the axial AC loss strongly depends on the twist pitch, whereas the azimuthal AC losses are the same for all twist pitch.

Abstract

Vacancy-type defects in the CeO[sub 2]/SrTiO[sub 3] structure were studied by means of positron annihilation. Thin CeO[sub 2] films were grown on SrTiO[sub 3] substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy without using an oxidant; oxygen was supplied by diffusion from the substrate (this process is referred to as automatic feeding epitaxy). A preferential epitaxial growth of CeO[sub 2](001) on SrTiO[sub 3](001) was observed, but an increase in the film thickness or annealing in an O[sub 2] atmosphere caused a partial growth of CeO[sub 2](110). The introduction of this phase was found to correlate with the reduction in the concentration of vacancy-type defects. The species of defects introduced into the SrTiO[sub 3] substrate was found to be not only oxygen vacancies but also Sr vacancies or their complexes. We discuss the mechanism that introduced cation vacancies in terms of oxygen nonstoichiometry. We found the trapping rate of positrons by Sr vacancies to depend on the sample temperature. This was associated with the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant near the defects or the presence of shallow trapping centers. © 2003 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

Vacancy-type defects in CeO2/SrTiO3 structure are studied using positron annihilation. The findings show that the value of the S parameter corresponding to the annihilation of positrons in the SrTiO2 substrate is increased by the formation of the CeO2 film.

Abstract

Exchange anisotropy has been investigated by torque magnetometry for MnPt(30 nm)/NiFe(5 nm) bilayers grown by the MBE method on MgO(001), SrTi[O.sub.3](001), and MgO(111) substrates. In-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction observation and ex-situ X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the MnPt layers have chemical order and have (100) uncompensated and (111) compensated plane parallel to the film plane, respectively for (001) and (111) substrate orientation. In MnPt/NiFe/SrTi[O.sub.3](001) torque components of unidirectional and uniaxial anisotropies have been observed, while in NiFe/MnPt/MgO(001) both the anisotropies almost disappeared and a torque curve with four fold symmetry was observed. This torque curve seems to be closely related with the crystal anisotropy of MnPt. Index Terms--Exchange anisotropy, magnetic anisotropy, magnetic thin films, MnPt, NiFe.

Abstract

Exchange anisotropy in MnPt(30 nm)/NiFe(5 nm) bilayers was investigated for films grown by the MBE method on MgO(001) and SrTi[O.sub.3](001) substrates. During the deposition, a static magnetic field of 100 Oe was applied in the film plane. In-situ reflection high-energy electron diffraction observations and ex-situ X-ray diffraction measurements revealed that the MnPt layers have chemical order and have (100) orientation which is an uncompensated plane of antiferromagnetic spin alignment. The bilayers whose MnPt layer was grown on NiFe layer were found to have an exchange anisotropy field ([H.sub.ex]) of 220 Oe (corresponding exchange anisotropy energy of J = 0.084 erg/[cm.sup.2]) and a low coercivity ([H.sub.c]) of 43 Oe, while the bilayers whose NiFe layer was grown on MnPt layer show very small [H.sub.ex] and a large [H.sub.c]. Abstract

A non-gradient-based approach for topology optimization using a genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper. The genetic algorithm used in this paper is assisted by the Kriging surrogate model to reduce computational cost required for function evaluation. To validate the non-gradient-based topology optimization method in flow problems, this research focuses on two single-objective optimization problems, where the objective functions are to minimize pressure loss and to maximize heat transfer of flow channels, and one multi-objective optimization problem, which combines earlier two single-objective optimization problems. The shape of flow channels is represented by the level set function. The pressure loss and the heat transfer performance of the channels are evaluated by the Building-Cube Method code, which is a Cartesian-mesh CFD solver. The proposed method resulted in an agreement with previous study in the single-objective problems in its topology and achieved global exploration of non-dominated solutions in the multi-objective problems. © 2016 The Authors International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering Published by John Wiley & Sons Ltd [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many important topics in multiobjective optimization and decision making have been studied in this book so far. In this chapter, we wish to discuss some new trends and challenges which the field is facing. For brevity, we here concentrate on three main issues: new problem areas in which multiobjective optimization can be of use, new procedures and algorithms to make efficient and useful applications of multiobjective optimization tools and, finally, new interesting and practically usable optimality concepts. Some research has already been started and some such topics are also mentioned here to encourage further research.
