17. Small instanton transitions for M5 fractions

Abstract

M5-branes on an ADE singularity are described by certain six-dimensional "conformal matter" superconformal field theories. Their Higgs moduli spaces contain information about various dynamical processes for the M5s; however, they are not directly accessible due to the lack of a Lagrangian formulation. Using anomaly matching, we compute their dimensions. The result implies that M5 fractions can recombine in several different ways, where the M5s are leaving behind frozen versions of the singularity. The anomaly polynomial gives hints about the nature of the freezing. We also check the Higgs dimension formula by comparing it with various existing conjectures for the CFTs one obtains by torus compactifications down to four and three dimensions. Aided by our results, we also extend those conjectures to compactifications of theories not previously considered. 18. Anomaly constraints on deconfinement and chiral phase transition

Abstract

We study constraints on thermal phase transitions of ${\rm SU}(N_c)$ gauge theories by using the 't Hooft anomaly involving the center symmetry and chiral symmetry. We consider two cases of massless fermions: (i) adjoint fermions, and (ii) $N_f$ flavors of fundamental fermions with a nontrivial greatest common divisor ${\rm gcd}(N_c,N_f) \neq 1$. For the first case (i), we show that the chiral symmetry restoration in terms of the standard Landau-Ginzburg effective action is impossible at a temperature lower than that of deconfinement. For the second case (ii), we introduce a modified version of the center symmetry which we call center-flavor symmetry, and draw similar conclusions under a certain definition of confinement. Moreover, at zero temperature, our results give a partial explanation of the appearance of dual magnetic gauge group in (supersymmetric) QCD when ${\rm gcd}(N_c,N_f) \neq 1$., Comment: 6 pages, references added; v3:references added and minor change

Abstract

We point out that we can almost always determine by the anomaly matching the full anomaly polynomial of a supersymmetric theory in 2d, 4d or 6d if we assume that its Higgs branch is the one-instanton moduli space of some group G. This method not only provides by far the simplest method to compute the central charges of known theories of this class, e.g. 4d E_{6,7,8} theories of Minahan and Nemeschansky or the 6d E-string theory, but also gives us new pieces of information about unknown theories of this class., Comment: 23 pages

Abstract

Defect chemistry that results in the thermal processing of dielectric and piezoelectric films, crystals and ceramics ultimately controls the properties and long‐term performance of materials and devices. This paper reviews several thermochemical defect reactions using important perovskite base composition dielectrics including Pb(Zr,Ti)O3, (Na,K)NbO3, (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3‒BaTiO3, and Ca(Hf,Ti,Mn)O3. Within this group of perovskite‐based functional materials, we note ways the point defects can be formed to create non‐stoichiometric compositions changing the overall cation‐to‐anion ratios during the synthesis process. These reactions can be developed with the loss of volatile species such as metal and oxygen ions. The relative concentrations of these can impact the over conductions in terms of the mixed contributions of ionic conductivity from the oxygen vacancies and the electronic conductivity, along with microstructure and properties in some cases. 21. Extension of all‐sky radiance assimilation to hyperspectral infrared sounders.

Abstract

This study accomplished the all‐sky infrared (IR) radiance assimilation of the hyperspectral IR sounders of the IR atmospheric sounding interferometer in the Japan Meteorological Agency's global system. Essential assimilation procedures, including cloud‐dependent quality control, bias correction, and observation‐error modeling, were directly adapted from the all‐sky assimilation of geostationary satellite imagers in our previous study, without any sophisticated modifications. Data assimilation experiments conducted in different seasons demonstrated that, compared with clear‐sky radiance assimilation, the all‐sky radiance assimilation of three channels sensitive to mid and upper tropospheric water vapor yielded significant forecast improvements in not only humidity but also temperature, wind, and geopotential height. These improvements originated from more than twofold increments in the number of globally assimilated observations under the all‐sky approach and better observation coverages. Increasing the number of assimilated channels to nine further amplified these improvements. The incorporation of an upper tropospheric channel mitigated upper tropospheric humidity biases that were originally exacerbated during three‐channel assimilation. 31. Psychological factors influencing the vividness and affect of visitors' recall of nostalgic life memories in museums

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of nostalgia on museum visitors' memories of life episodes from the distant past following their encounters with museum objects they remembered from earlier stages of their lives. The study sought to understand how the vividness of these memories and the affect of such memories in the present day were related to nostalgia and other psychological factors. A total of 87 participants who had visited one of three different social history museums located in Japan were recruited for the study. A total of 253 separate memory episodes were obtained from the participants, who were asked to rate the strength of several psychological factors associated with the memories triggered by the museum exhibits. A conceptual model in which nostalgia mediated psychological factors was tested through structural equation modeling. The results revealed that the nostalgia evoked by life episodes completely mediated the effects of the vividness of one's memory of those episodes recalled in the present. Abstract

We consider the circle and torus compactification of a certain subclass of 6d $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs which are Higgsable to the higher rank E-string theories. Using the T-duality between Type I' and Type IIB, we found that the $S^1$ compactification of the theories can be realized by 5-brane webs describing the 5d uplifting of a specified class S theory, generalizing the result by Benini, Benvenuti and Tachikawa. Abstract

We study the $T^2$ compactification of a class of 6d $\mathcal{N}{=}(1,0)$ theories that is Higgsable to $\mathcal{N}{=}(2,0)$ theories. We show that the resulting 4d $\mathcal{N}{=}2$ theory at the origin of the Coulomb branch and the parameter space is generically given by two superconformal matter sectors coupled by an infrared-free gauge multiplet and another conformal gauge multiplet. Our analysis utilizes the 5d theories obtained by putting the same class of 6d theories on $S^1$. Our class includes, among others, the 6d theories describing multiple M5 branes on an ALE singularity, and we analyze them in detail. The resulting 4d theory has manifestly both the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ and the full flavor symmetry. We also discuss in detail the special cases of 6d theories where the infrared-free gauge multiplet is absent. In an appendix, we give a field-theoretical argument for an F-theoretic constraint that forbids a particular 6d anomaly-free matter content, as an application of our analysis., Comment: 59 pages

Abstract

We describe a method to determine the anomaly polynomials of general 6d $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ and $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs, in terms of the anomaly matching on their tensor branches. This method is almost purely field theoretical, and can be applied to all known 6d SCFTs. We demonstrate our method in many concrete examples, including $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ theories of arbitrary type and the theories on M5 branes on ALE singularities, reproducing the $N^3$ behavior.
