The $^{22}$Ne($\alpha$,n)$^{25}$Mg reaction is the dominant neutron source for the slow neutron capture process ($s$-process) in massive stars and contributes, together with the $^{13}$C($\alpha$,n)$^{16}$O, to the production of neutrons for the $s$-process in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars. However, the reaction is endothermic and competes directly with the $^{22}$Ne($\alpha,\gamma)^{26}$Mg radiative capture. The uncertainties for both reactions are large owing to the uncertainty in the level structure of $^{26}$Mg near the alpha and neutron separation energies. These uncertainties are affecting the s-process nucleosynthesis calculations in theoretical stellar models. Indirect studies in the past have been successful in determining the energies, $\gamma$-ray and neutron widths of the $^{26}$Mg states in the energy region of interest. But, the high Coulomb barrier hinders a direct measurement of the resonance strengths, which are determined by the $\alpha$-widths for these states. The goal of the present experiments is to identify the critical resonance states and to precisely measure the $\alpha$-widths by $\alpha$ transfer techniques . Hence, the $\alpha$-inelastic scattering and $\alpha$-transfer measurements were performed on a solid $^{26}$Mg target and a $^{22}$Ne gas target, respectively, using the Grand Raiden Spectrometer at RCNP, Osaka, Japan. Six levels (E$_x$ = 10717 keV , 10822 keV, 10951 keV, 11085 keV, 11167 keV and 11317 keV) have been observed above the $\alpha$-threshold in the region of interest (10.61 - 11.32 MeV). The rates are dominated in both reaction channels by the resonance contributions of the states at E$_x$ = 10951, 11167 and 11317 keV. The E$_x$ =11167 keV has the most appreciable impact on the ($\alpha,\gamma$) rate and therefore plays an important role for the prediction of the neutron production in s-process environments.

The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn between 5 and 22 MeV has been determined at RCNP Osaka from a polarization transfer analysis of proton inelastic scattering at E_0 = 295 MeV and forward angles including 0{\deg}. Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability \alpha_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established \alpha_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclear energy density functionals (EDFs). Models based on modern Skyrme interactions describe the data fairly well while most calculations based on relativistic Hamiltonians cannot., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The electric dipole strength in 120Sn has been extracted from proton inelastic scattering experiments at E_p = 295 MeV and at forward angles including 0 degree. Below neutron threshoild it differs from the results of a 120Sn(gamma,gamma') experiment and peaks at an excitation energy of 8.3 MeV. The total strength corresponds to 2.3(2)% of the energy-weighted sum rule and is more than three times larger than what is observed with the (gamma,gamma') reaction. This implies a strong fragmentation of the E1 strength and/or small ground state branching ratios of the excited 1- states., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Scattering of protons of several hundred MeV is a promising new spectroscopic tool for the study of electric dipole strength in nuclei. A case study of 208Pb shows that at very forward angles J^pi = 1- states are strongly populated via Coulomb excitation. A separation from nuclear excitation of other modes is achieved by a multipole decomposition analysis of the experimental cross sections based on theoretical angular distributions calculated within the quasiparticle-phonon model. The B(E1) transition strength distribution is extracted for excitation energies up to 9 MeV, i.e., in the region of the so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR). The Coulomb-nuclear interference shows sensitivity to the underlying structure of the E1 transitions, which allows for the first time an experimental extraction of the electromagnetic transition strength and the energy centroid of the PDR., Comment: submitted to Phys. The Low Energy Neutron Detector Array (LENDA) is a neutron time-of-flight (TOF) spectrometer developed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Lab- oratory (NSCL) for use in inverse kinematics experiments with rare isotope beams. Its design has been motivated by the need to study the spin-isospin response of unstable nuclei using (p, n) charge-exchange reactions at intermediate energies (> 100 MeV/u). It can be used, however, for any reaction study that involves emission of low energy neutrons (150 keV - 10 MeV). The array consists of 24 plastic scintillator bars and is capable of registering the recoiling neutron energy and angle with high detection efficiency. The neutron energy is determined by the time-of-flight technique, while the position of interaction is deduced using the timing and energy information from the two photomultipliers of each bar. A simple test setup utilizing radioactive sources has been used to characterize the array. Results of test measurements are compared with simulations. A neutron energy threshold of < 150 keV, an intrinsic time (position) resolution of \sim 400 ps (\sim 6 cm) and an efficiency > 20 % for neutrons below 4 MeV have been obtained., Comment: Version accepted for publication in Nucl. The $^{150}$Nd($^3$He,$t$) reaction at 140 MeV/u and $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) reaction at 115 MeV/u were measured, populating excited states in $^{150}$Pm. The transitions studied populate intermediate states of importance for the (neutrinoless) $\beta\beta$ decay of $^{150}$Nd to $^{150}$Sm. Monopole and dipole contributions to the measured excitation-energy spectra were extracted by using multipole decomposition analyses. The experimental results were compared with theoretical calculations obtained within the framework of Quasiparticle Random-Phase Approximation (QRPA), which is one of the main methods employed for estimating the half-life of the neutrinoless $\beta\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{150}$Nd. The present results thus provide useful information on the neutrino responses for evaluating the $0\nu\beta\beta$ and $2\nu\beta\beta$ matrix elements. The $2\nu\beta\beta$ matrix element calculated from the Gamow-Teller transitions through the lowest $1^{+}$ state in the intermediate nucleus is maximally about half of that deduced from the half-life measured in $2\nu\beta\beta$ direct counting experiments and at least several transitions through $1^{+}$ intermediate states in $^{150}$Pm are required to explain the $2\nu\beta\beta$ half-life. Because Gamow-Teller transitions in the $^{150}$Sm($t$,$^3$He) experiment are strongly Pauli-blocked, the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths was complicated by the excitation of the $2\hbar\omega$, $\Delta L=0$, $\Delta S=1$ isovector spin-flip giant monopole resonance (IVSGMR). However, the near absence of Gamow-Teller transition strength made it possible to cleanly identify this resonance, and the strength observed is consistent with the full exhaustion of the non-energy-weighted sum rule for the IVSGMR., Comment: 18 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables

A benchmark experiment on 208Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0{\deg} is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. The extracted E1 polarizability leads to a neutron skin thickness r_skin = 0.156+0.025-0.021 fm in 208Pb derived within a mean-field model [Phys. Rev. The proportionality between differential cross sections at vanishing linear momentum transfer and Gamow-Teller transition strength, expressed in terms of the \textit{unit cross section} ($\hat{\sigma}_{GT}$) was studied as a function of target mass number for ($t$,$^{3}$He) and ($^{3}$He,$t$) reactions at 115 $A$MeV and 140 $A$MeV, respectively. Existing ($^{3}$He,$t$) and ($t$,$^{3}$He) data on targets with mass number $12\leq A\leq 120$ were complemented with new and reevaluated ($t$,$^{3}$He) data on proton, deuteron, $^{6}$Li and $^{12}$C targets. It was found that in spite of the small difference in beam energies between the two probes, the unit cross sections have a nearly identical and simple dependence on target mass number $A$, for $A\geq 12$: $\hat{\sigma}_{GT}=109/A^{0.65}$. The factorization of the unit cross sections in terms of a kinematical factor, a distortion factor and the strength of the effective spin-isospin transfer nucleus-nucleus interaction was investigated. Simple phenomenological functions depending on mass number $A$ were extracted for the latter two. By comparison with plane and distorted-wave Born approximation calculations, it was found that the use of a short-range approximation for knock-on exchange contributions to the transition amplitude results in overestimated cross sections for reactions involving the composite ($^{3}$He,$t$) and ($t$,$^{3}$He) probes., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Gamow-Teller and dipole transitions to final states in 13B were studied via the 13C(t,3He) reaction at Et = 115 AMeV. Besides the strong Gamow-Teller transition to the 13B ground state, a weaker Gamow-Teller transition to a state at 3.6 MeV was found. This state was assigned a spin-parity of 3/2- by comparison with shell-model calculations using the WBP and WBT interactions which were modified to allow for mixing between nhw and (n+2)hw configurations. This assignment agrees with a recent result from a lifetime measurement of excited states in 13B. The shell-model calculations also explained the relatively large spectroscopic strength measured for a low-lying 1/2+ state at 4.83 MeV in 13B. The cross sections for dipole transitions up to Ex(13B)= 20 MeV excited via the 13C(t,3He) reaction were also compared with the shell-model calculations. The theoretical cross sections exceeded the data by a factor of about 1.8, which might indicate that the dipole excitations are "quenched". The 64-Zn(t,3-He) reaction has been studied using a secondary triton beam of 115 MeV/nucleon to extract the Gamow-Teller transition-strength distribution to 64-Cu. The results were compared with shell-model calculations using the pf-shell effective interactions KB3G and GXPF1A and with existing data from the 64-Zn(d,2-He) reaction. Whereas the experimental results exhibited good consistency, neither of the theoretical predictions managed to reproduce the data. The implications for electron-capture rates during late stellar evolution were investigated. The rates based on the theoretical strength distributions are lower by factors of 3.5-5 compared to the rates based on experimental strength distributions., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Gamow-Teller transitions from 24Mg to 24Na were studied via the (t,3He) reaction at 115 AMeV using a secondary triton beam produced via fast fragmentation of 150 AMeV 16O ions. Compared to previous (t,3He) experiments at this energy that employed a primary alpha beam, the secondary beam intensity is improved by about a factor of five. Despite the large emittance of the secondary beam, an excitation-energy resolution of ~200 keV is achieved. A good correspondence is found between the extracted Gamow-Teller strength distribution and those available from other charge-exchange probes. Theoretical calculations using the newly developed USDA and USDB sd-shell model interactions reproduce the data well., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The 24Mg(3He,t)24Al reaction has been studied at E(3He)=420 MeV. An energy resolution of 35 keV was achieved. Gamow-Teller strengths to discrete levels in 24Al are extracted by using a recently developed empirical relationship for the proportionality between Gamow-Teller strengths and differential cross sections at zero momentum transfer. Except for small discrepancies for a few weak excitations, good agreement with previous 24Mg(p,n) data and nuclear-structure calculations using the USDA/B interactions in the sd shell-model space is found. The excitation energy of several levels in 24Al of significance for determination of the 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al thermonuclear reaction rate were measured. Results are consistent with two of the three previous (3He,t) measurements, performed at much lower beam energies. However, a new state at Ex(24Al)=2.605(10) MeV was found and is the third state above the proton separation energy., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The differential cross section and analyzing power $A_y$ of the ${\vec p}p{\to}pp{\pi}^0$ reaction have been measured at RCNP in coplanar geometry at a beam energy of 390 MeV and the dependence on both the pion emission angle and the relative momentum of the final protons have been extracted. The angular variation of Ay for the large values of the relative momentum studied here shows that this is primarily an effect of the interference of pion s- and p-waves and this interference can also explain the momentum dependence. Within the framework of a very simple model, these results would suggest that the pion-production operator has a significant long-range component., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, submitted to Physical Review C

The Gamow-Teller strength for the transition from the ground state of 13C to the T=1/2, J^pi=3/2- excited state at 3.51 MeV in 13N is extracted via the 13C(3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV. In contrast to results from earlier (p,n) studies on 13C, a good agreement with shell-model calculations and the empirical unit cross section systematics from other nuclei is found. The results are used to study the analog 13N(e-,v_e)13C reaction, which plays a role in the pre-explosion convective phase of type Ia supernovae. Although the differences between the results from the (3He,t) and (p,n) data significantly affect the deduced electron-capture rate and the net heat-deposition in the star due to this transition, the overall effect on the pre-explosive evolution is small., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Differential cross sections for transitions of known weak strength were measured with the (3He,t) reaction at 420 MeV on targets of 12C, 13C, 18O, 26Mg, 58Ni, 60Ni, 90Zr, 118Sn, 120Sn and 208Pb. Using this data, it is shown the proportionalities between strengths and cross sections for this probe follow simple trends as a function of mass number. These trends can be used to confidently determine Gamow-Teller strength distributions in nuclei for which the proportionality cannot be calibrated via beta-decay strengths. Although theoretical calculations in distorted-wave Born approximation overestimate the data, they allow one to understand the main experimental features and to predict deviations from the simple trends observed in some of the transitions., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

Transition rate measurements are reported for the first and the second 2+ states in N=Z 64Ge. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with large-scale Shell Model calculations applying the recently developed GXPF1A interactions. Theoretical analysis suggests that 64Ge is a collective gamma-soft anharmonic vibrator. The measurement was done using the Recoil Distance Method (RDM) and a unique combination of state-of-the-art instruments at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL). States of interest were populated via an intermediate-energy single-neutron knock-out reaction. RDM studies of knock-out and fragmentation reaction products hold the promise of reaching far from stability and providing lifetime information for excited states in a wide range of nuclei.

The cluster structures of the excited states in $^{11}$B are studied by analyzing the isoscalar monopole and quadrupole strengths in the $^{11}$B($d$,$d'$) reaction at $E_d=200$ MeV. The excitation strengths are compared with the predictions by the shell-model and antisymmetrized molecular-dynamics (AMD) calculations. It is found that the large monopole strength for the $3/2^-_3$ state at $E_x=8.56$ MeV is well described by the AMD calculation and is an evidence for a developed $2\alpha+t$ cluster structure., Comment: Revised according to the referees' comments

Charge-exchange reactions are an important tool for determining weak-interaction rates. They provide stringent tests for nuclear structure models necessary for modeling astrophysical environments such as neutron stars and core-collapse supernovae. In anticipation of (t,3He) experiments at 115 MeV/nucleon on nuclei of relevance (A~40-120) in the late evolution of stars, it is shown via a study of the 26Mg(t,3He) reaction that this probe is an accurate tool for extracting Gamow-Teller transition strengths. To do so, the data are complemented by results from the 26Mg(3He,t) reaction at 140 MeV/nucleon which allows for a comparison of T=2 analog states excited via the mirror reactions. Extracted Gamow-Teller strengths from 26Mg(t,3He) and 26Mg(3He,t) are compared with those from 26Mg(d,2He) and 26Mg(p,n) studies, respectively. A good correspondence is found, indicating probe-independence of the strength extraction. Furthermore, we test shell-model calculations using the new USD-05B interaction in the sd-model space and show that it reproduces the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distributions well. A second goal of this work is to improve the understanding of the (t,3He) and (3He,t) reaction mechanisms at intermediate energies since detailed studies are scarce. The Distorted-Wave Born Approximation is employed, taking into account the composite structures of the 3He and triton particles. The reaction model provides the means to explain systematic uncertainties at the 10-20% level in the extraction of Gamow-Teller strengths as being due to interference between Gamow-Teller dL=0, dS=1 and dL=2, dS=1 amplitudes that both contribute to transitions from 0+ to 1+ states., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

The $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$), $^{11}$B($d, d'$), and $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reactions were measured at forward scattering angles including $0^\circ$ to study the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths in $^{11}$B. The measured $^{11}$B($^3$He$, t$) cross sections were compared with the results of the distorted-wave impulse-approximation (DWIA) calculation, and the Gamow-Teller (GT) strengths for low-lying states in $^{11}$C were determined. The GT strengths were converted to the isovector spin-flip M1 strengths using the isobaric analog relations under the assumption of the isospin symmetry. The isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths were obtained from the ($d, d'$) analysis by assuming that the shape of the collective transition form factor with the same ${\Delta}J^\pi$ is similar in the $^{11}$B($d, d'$) and $^{12}$C($d, d'$) reactions. The obtained isovector and isoscalar strengths were used in the DWIA calculations for the $^{11}$B($p, p'$) reaction. The DWIA calculation reasonably well explains the present $^{11}$B($p, p'$) result. However, the calculated cross section for the 8.92-MeV 3/2$^-_2$ state was significantly smaller than the experimental values. The transition strengths obtained in the shell-model calculations were found to be 20-50% larger than the experimental strengths. The transition strengths for the neutrino induced reactions were estimated by using the isovector and isoscalar spin-flip M1 strengths. The present results are quantitatively in agreement with the theoretical estimation discussing the axial isoscalar coupling in the neutrino scattering process, and are useful in the measurement of the stellar neutrinos using the neutral- and charged-current reactions on $^{11}$B.

Cross sections and polarization transfer observables in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ reactions at 392 MeV were measured at several angles between $\theta_{lab}=$ 0$^\circ$ and 14$^\circ$. The non-spin-flip (${\Delta}S=0$) and spin-flip (${\Delta}S=1$) strengths in transitions to several discrete states and broad resonances in $^{16}$O were extracted using a model-independent method. The giant resonances in the energy region of $E_x=19-$27 MeV were found to be predominantly excited by ${\Delta}L=1$ transitions. The strength distribution of spin-dipole transitions with ${\Delta}S=1$ and ${\Delta}L=1$ were deduced. The obtained distribution was compared with a recent shell model calculation. The analyzing power of ${\vec p}p\to pp{\pi}^0$ reaction has been measured at the beam energy of 390 MeV. The missing mass technique of final protons has been applied to identify the $\pi^0$ production event. The dependences of the analyzing power on the pion emission-angle and the relative momentum of the protons have beenobtained. The angular dependence could be decomposed by the Legendre polynomial and the relative contribution of the $P_{21}$ to $P_{11}$ function is less than 20%. The P-state amplitude is found to be the dominant component of the $\pi$ production near the threshold. The momentum dependence of the analyzing power has been studied to obtain the information about the pion production mechanism. A windowless and self-supporting ice target is described. An ice sheet with a thickness of 29.7 mg/cm$^2$ cooled by liquid nitrogen was placed at the target position of a magnetic spectrometer and worked stably in the $^{16}$O$(p,p')$ experiment at $E_{p}=392$ MeV.
