Dislocations in a homoepitaxial diamond film grown by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) were characterized by confocal Raman imaging. The diamond film was grown on a high-pressure high-temperature (HPHT) substrate using an oxygen-adding condition to minimize dislocation formation during diamond growth. The dislocation densities in the CVD thin film and substrate were found to be 3 × 104 and 2 × 104 cm−2, respectively, from large-area Raman imaging. The spatial variation of stress around dislocations in CVD diamond was analyzed three-dimensionally using in-plane images of peak positions of diamond first-order lines taken at different depths from the diamond film surface. The variational directions of the stresses depended on the types of dislocation: ⟨110⟩ variational direction corresponds to edge [001] dislocation, whereas the ⟨100⟩ variational direction corresponds to 45° mixed [001] dislocation. Most dislocations passed through the CVD thin film from the substrate. Some dislocations were newly generated at the CVD layer–substrate interface. The dislocations in CVD diamond propagate along the [001] direction of diamond crystal with the same Burgers vector in the HPHT substrate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with massive T cell infiltration into the synovium. The accumulated T cells express type 1 cytokines, such as interferon-gamma (IFNgamma) and tumor necrosis factor alpha, and activated markers of inflammation, such as CD154 and inducible costimulator (ICOS). It is thought that chemokines contribute to T cell accumulation in the synovium. In this study, we examined the role of CXCL16 and CXCR6 in T cell migration and stimulation in RA synovium. METHODS: Expression of CXCL16 and CXCR6 was analyzed by immunohistochemistry, reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, and/or flow cytometry. Migration activity was assessed using a chemotaxis chamber. IFNgamma production was analyzed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The effect of anti-CXCL16 monoclonal antibody on murine collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) was evaluated. RESULTS: CXCL16 was expressed in RA synovium. CXCR6 was expressed more frequently on synovial T cells than in peripheral blood. Moreover, CXCR6-positive synovial T cells more frequently expressed CD154 and ICOS than did CXCR6-negative T cells. Stimulation with interleukin-15 (IL-15) up-regulated the expression of CXCR6 on peripheral blood T cells, and then stimulation with CXCL16 induced migration of IL-15-stimulated T cells and enhanced IFNgamma production. Furthermore, anti-CXCL16 monoclonal antibody significantly reduced the clinical arthritis score and reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells and bone destruction in the synovium of mice with CIA. CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that CXCL16 plays an important role in T cell accumulation and stimulation in RA synovium and suggest that CXCL16 could be a target molecule in new therapies for RA. Persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes (PS-based AOPs), characterized by the coexistence of SO₄•⁻ and HO•, have been proven effective in treating a series of cyanide-bearing pollutants. However, the mechanisms of these reactive species in the degradation of cyanides, especially metal-cyanide complexes, remain unclear or contradictory. The degradation behavior of representative cyanides (including potassium cyanide and potassium ferricyanide) at different pH conditions (2, 7 and 12) in thermally activated persulfate system (T = 60 °C) was explored, and the roles of SO₄•⁻ and HO• in cyanide degradation were explored by leveraging the distinct characteristics of reactive species under different pH conditions. The study found that both HO• and SO₄•⁻ can react with free cyanide (CN⁻ and HCN). However, the reaction barrier between CN⁻ and HO• is lower than that between HCN and SO₄•⁻, resulting in a higher removal rate of free cyanide under alkaline conditions compared to acidic and neutral conditions. For complexed cyanide, the complex bonds in ferricyanide were completely broken within 24 h by thermally activated persulfate at pH 2, releasing free cyanide, indicating the effectiveness of SO₄•⁻ in breaking the Fe-C bonds in ferricyanide. In contrast, ferricyanide was barely decomposed at pH 12, implying the inefficacy of HO• in breaking the Fe-C bonds. This study also innovatively found that SO₄•⁻ breaks the Fe-C bonds by oxidizing Fe(Ⅲ) in ferricyanide to Fe(Ⅳ) or Fe(Ⅴ), releasing CN⁻, which is then converted to CNO⁻ by SO₄•⁻ and HO•. CNO⁻ is further mineralized to NO₃⁻, NH₄⁺, and N₂ through hydrolysis or oxidation reactions. Spontaneous complete chorioamniotic membrane separation (cCMS) is rare and associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, such as intrauterine fetal death. Herein, we present a case of spontaneous cCMS in a fetus with ileal atresia and umbilical cord ulcers. In our case, we detected spontaneous cCMS on ultrasonography at 35 weeks of gestation. On the same day, a female infant weighing 2134 g was delivered via cesarean section. Pathological examination of the placenta confirmed cCMS and umbilical cord ulcers. We report a case of BPS combined with CPAM prenatally diagnosed as having two aberrant arteries from the celiac artery by fetal 3D-US. Introduction: In endodontic treatment, it is important to remove or inactivate biofilms in the root canal system. We investigated the effects of different concentrations and application times of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on the viability of bacteria in ex vivo polymicrobial biofilms of different maturation levels., Methods: Polymicrobial biofilms were prepared from dental plaque samples and grown for 1, 2, and 3 weeks under anaerobic conditions on collagen-coated hydroxyapatite discs as an ex vivo biofilm model. The biofilms were then exposed to NaOCl at concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 2% for 1 or 3 minutes. The control group was exposed to sterile distilled water. Viability staining was performed and examined by confocal laser scanning microscopy to determine the percentage of biofilm bacteria killed by NaOCl. Scanning electron microscopy was also performed to visually examine the biofilms., Results: Application of NaOCl at 0.5%-2% for both 1 and 3 min killed significantly more bacteria when compared to the controls (P < .05). Cell viability tended to be lower after the application of NaOCl for 3 minutes than that for 1 minute., Conclusions: Our experiments using an ex vivo model showed that within the range of 0.1%-2% of NaOCl, higher NaOCl concentrations and longer application times were more effective in killing biofilm bacteria, and that mature biofilms were more resistant to NaOCl than younger biofilms., (Copyright © 2024 American Association of Endodontists. This study introduces an environmentally friendly process for recovering zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) from municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) fly ash using ammonium chloride leaching and ammonia removal. The leaching rates for Zn and Cu were 54.39% and 86.23%, respectively, with total recovery rates reaching 52.21% and 85.28%, respectively. The recovered precipitate demonstrated significant Zn (33.62%) and Cu (14.19%) contents, making it ideal for metal smelting. The ammonium leaching process also showcased effective reduction and dechlorination effects on the fly ash. The treated fly ash had a reduced mass of only 30.63% of the original, and chlorine content decreased from 26.23% to 0.84%. A 18-year-old man was driving at 100 km/h on a motorbike and collided with a utility pole. He was taken to our hospital in a state of shock due to an unstable pelvic fracture and cardiac tamponade. Pericardial drainage was carried out, but intrapericardial hemorrhage persisted and the patient underwent emergency thoracotomy and suture of right atrial injury. After hemodynamic condition improved, the patient was transferred to a tertiary care facility. For the pelvic fracture, open reduction and fixation was performed on the 6th day after injury. During recovery, moderate mitral valve regurgitation and severe tricuspid valve regurgitation due to rupture of the right ventricular papillary muscle were diagnosed. The patient's exercise tolerance was too reduced to continue rehabilitation. Thirty-seven days after the injury, mitral and tricuspid valve repair was performed. Four months after the injury, he was discharged without sequelae.

Objective: This study aimed to compare an experimental model simulating clinical root canal irrigation (root canal model) with a conventional experimental model immersing dentin sample to irrigants (immersion model) to evaluate removal of the smear layer and decalcification of the root canal dentin using sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) and two different concentrations of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) solution., Materials and Methods: Forty-five single-rooted extracted human teeth were prepared using a Ni-Ti rotary file. EDTA, NaOCl, and citric acid were used in the root canal models and the immersion models. After the irrigation protocol, root canal surfaces were observed under scanning electron microscopy. Residual smear and decalcification of the root canal dentin were evaluated objectively by measuring the percentage of the area occupied by visible dentin tubules, the number of visible dentin tubules, and the mean area of a visible single dentin tubule., Results: Root canal and immersion models with the same irrigation protocol showed significantly different results for smear residues and decalcification of root canal dentin. In the root canal model, neither different EDTA concentrations nor the order of EDTA and NaOCl applications significantly impacted smear residues or decalcification of root canal dentin. Furthermore, no erosion of the root canal dentin surface was observed in any experimental groups in the root canal model using EDTA and NaOCl compared to intact dentin., Conclusions: Experimental design affected results for residual smear layer and decalcification of root canal dentin. The order of EDTA and NaOCl use and the concentration of EDTA did not affect results. We conducted a charge-charge clustering experiment of positively and negatively charged colloidal particles in aqueous media under a microgravity environment at the International Space Station. A special setup was used to mix the colloid particles in microgravity and then these structures were immobilized in gel cured using ultraviolet (UV) light. The samples returned to the ground were observed by optical microscopy. The space sample of polystyrene particles with a specific gravity ρ (=1.05) close to the medium had an average association number of ~50% larger than the ground control and better structural symmetry. The effect of electrostatic interactions on the clustering was also confirmed for titania particles (ρ ~ 3), whose association structures were only possible in the microgravity environment without any sedimentation they generally suffer on the ground. This study suggests that even slight sedimentation and convection on the ground significantly affect the structure formation of colloids. The study presents the case of a 71-year-old woman who visited a nearby hospital for epigastric pain and weight loss. A CT scan showed a mass in the gallbladder, and the CEA level was high, so she was referred to our hospital for further investigation. Abdominal US, CT, and MRI suggested gallbladder cancer with para-aortic metastasis, and the histological findings on the EUS-FNA confirmed the diagnosis. Since surgical resection was not indicated, chemotherapy was performed(gemcitabine plus cisplatin). After 10 courses of chemotherapy, CT and MRI showed downsizing of para-aortic lymph nodes, and no accumulation of FDG was found on FDG-PET. Confirming the downstaging of cancer, conversion surgery, comprising an extended cholecystectomy and a lymph node resection, was performed. The pathological diagnosis showed no lymph node metastasis. No recurrence was observed after 12 months of surgery. Initially, unresectable gallbladder cancer with para-aortic lymph node metastasis was indicated to be compatible with preoperative chemotherapy and conversion surgery.

Fly ash (FA) generated from Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) incineration contains high leaching potential of toxic metals. Calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is the main hydration product of cement and can immobilize the leaching of toxic metals, formed by the reaction of Ca with pozzolanic Si in a highly alkaline environment. Toxic metals can be immobilized by the addition of pozzolan to FA residues (in lieu of cement), which is a source of Ca and provides an alkaline condition. The current study proposed a new approach of reusing the fine-fraction of MSW incineration bottom ash (BA), which contains amorphous silica, known as pozzolan for immobilization of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in FA. The dissolved amorphous silica and alumina emerged from the BA, with available Ca ions and in an extremely alkaline condition owing by FA, stimulate the pozzolanic reaction, resulting the formation of cementitious compounds of C-S-H gel and calcium aluminate hydrates (C-A-H) that can immobilize the heavy metals leaching from FA. The existence of calcium hydroxide promotes the carbonation process, reducing pH, and consequently immobilizing heavy metals. The method involves the simple mixing of BA and FA with water. The mixture was settled for 1, 4, 16, and 30 days at room temperature and annealed (120 °C) conditions. The leaching concentrations of Pb and Zn significantly reduced in the stabilized FA samples followed by standard Japanese leaching test (JLT- 46). Pb stabilization efficiency was reached >99.9% after 16-days of settling periods with 10% dosage of BA at room temperature. The added BA to FA residues reacted with Ca(OH) 2 and CaClOH produced the C-S-H gel. pH, XRD, and SEM-EDX analyses evaluated the carbonation and pozzolanic reactions that promoted the immobilization of Pb and Zn. Immobilization of heavy metals by using fine-fraction of BA seems to be very effective and technically feasible. The technology can save original material, produce inert material and avoids landfilling of incineration residues. Background & Aims: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is difficult to cure owing to the persistence of covalently closed circular viral DNA (cccDNA). We performed single-cell transcriptome analysis of newly established HBV-positive and HBV-negative hepatocellular carcinoma cell lines and found that dedicator of cytokinesis 11 (DOCK11) was crucially involved in HBV persistence. However, the roles of DOCK11 in the HBV lifecycle have not been clarified., Methods: The cccDNA levels were measured by Southern blotting and real-time detection polymerase chain reaction in various hepatocytes including PXB cells by using an HBV-infected model. The retrograde trafficking route of HBV capsid was investigated by super-resolution microscopy, proximity ligation assay, and time-lapse analysis. The downstream molecules of DOCK11 and underlying mechanism were examined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, immunoblotting, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay., Results: The cccDNA levels were strongly increased by DOCK11 overexpression and repressed by DOCK11 suppression. Interestingly, DOCK11 functionally associated with retrograde trafficking proteins in the trans-Golgi network (TGN), Arf-GAP with GTPase domain, ankyrin repeat, and pleckstrin homology domain-containing protein 2 (AGAP2), and ADP-ribosylation factor 1 (ARF1), together with HBV capsid, to open an alternative retrograde trafficking route for HBV from early endosomes (EEs) to the TGN and then to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), thereby avoiding lysosomal degradation. Clinically, DOCK11 levels in liver biopsies from patients with chronic hepatitis B were significantly reduced by entecavir treatment, and this reduction correlated with HBV surface antigen levels., Conclusions: HBV uses a retrograde trafficking route via EEs-TGN-ER for infection that is facilitated by DOCK11 and serves to maintain cccDNA. A 52-year-old man underwent total gastrectomy for gastric cancer and chemoradiotherapy for thoracic paraaortic lymph node metastasis. He also underwent esophageal stent implantation for stenosis. He was admitted to our hospital with fever and breathing difficulty and was diagnosed with infectious pericarditis. He showed symptoms of shock due to cardiac tamponade. After pericardial drainage, his vital signs improved. When signs of infection are detected in patients with a history of chemoradiotherapy or stent implantation, we should consider infectious pericarditis due to esophageal pericardial fistula and apply immediate drainage of cardiac tamponade.
