Abstract

The formation of chiral magnetic soliton lattice (CSL) is investigated in monoaxial chiral dichalcogenide CrTa$_{3}$S$_{6}$ crystals in terms of a surface barrier, which prevents a penetration of chiral solitons into the system and is an intrinsic origin of hysteresis for the continuous phase transition of nucleation-type, as discussed in the system of quantized vortices in type-II superconductors. The magnetoresistance (MR) was examined with microfabricated platelet samples in different dimensions with regard to the $c$-axis direction of the crystal. The CSL formation was confirmed by the discrete MR changes, reflecting the number of chiral solitons, as well as by the presence of surface barrier, recognized as a fixed ratio of critical magnetic fields during the hysteresis field cycle. We also argue the influence of the surface barrier in the bulk CrTa$_{3}$S$_{6}$ crystals., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We assess the impact of magnetic disorder on the spin excitation spectra of the chiral helimagnetic crystal $\mathrm{CrNb_3S_6}$ using microwave resonance spectroscopy. The chiral spin soliton lattice phase (CSL), which is a prototype of a noncollinear spin system that forms periodically over a macroscopic length scale, exhibited three resonance modes over a wide frequency range. We found that the predominance of these modes depended on the degree of magnetic disorder and that disorder can be suppressed by sweeping the external field via an ideal helical state at 0~T. The macroscopic coherence of the CSL can be clearly observed through its collective dynamic behavior. Our study suggests that magnetic disorder can be used as a mechanism to control spin wave excitation in noncollinear spin systems., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figs (3 main + 2 SM)

Abstract

A chiral spin soliton lattice (CSL), one of the representative systems of a magnetic superstructure, exhibits reconfigurability in periodicity over a macroscopic length scale. Such coherent and tunable characteristics of the CSL lead to an emergence of elementary excitation of the CSL as phononlike modes due to translational symmetry breaking and bring a controllability of the dispersion relation of the CSL phonon. Using a broadband microwave spectroscopy technique, we directly found that higher-order magnetic resonance modes appear in the CSL phase of a chiral helimagnet CrNb3S6, which is ascribed to the CSL phonon response. The resonance frequency of the CSL phonon can be tuned between 16 and 40 GHz in the vicinity of the critical field, where the CSL period alters rapidly. The frequency range of the CSL phonon is expected to extend over 100 GHz as extrapolated on the basis of the theoretical model. The present results indicate that chiral helimagnets could work as materials useful for broadband signal processing in the millimeter-wave band.

Abstract

We investigated microwave propagation in the chiral spin soliton lattice (CSL) phase of micrometer-sized crystals of the monoaxial chiral helimagnet CrNb₃S₆. An advantage of the CSL is that its periodicity can be reconfigured over a macroscopic length scale by means of an external magnetic field. Using a two-antenna microwave spectroscopy technique, we measured the anisotropic response of the transmitted microwaves via the spin dynamics of the CSL. When propagating along the direction parallel to the helical axis, the microwave amplitude increased up to a factor of twenty with decreasing the number of chiral soliton kinks. When the propagation direction was rotated by 90 degrees with regards to the helical axis, the microwave amplitude increased by one order of magnitude upon formation of the chiral helimagnetic order in the vicinity of zero magnetic field, exceeding that of the ferromagnetic phase above the critical field. Our findings open a novel route for controlling the characteristics of microwave propagation using noncollinear spin textures.

Abstract

We investigate the magnetic field dependence of the spin excitation spectra of the chiral soliton lattice (CSL) in the helimagnet CrNb₃S₆, by means of microwave resonance spectroscopy. The CSL is a prototype of a noncollinear spin system that forms periodically over a macroscopic length scale. Following the field initialisation of the CSL, we found three collective resonance modes over an exceptionally wide frequency range. With further reducing the magnetic field towards 0 T, the spectral weight of these collective modes was disrupted by the emergence of additional resonances whose Kittel-like field dependence was linked to coexisting field polarised magnetic domains. The collective behaviour at a macroscopic level was only recovered upon reaching the helical magnetic state at 0 T. The magnetic history of this non collinear spin system can be utilized to control microwave absorption, with potential use in magnon driven devices.

Abstract

Quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for a number of agronomically important traits of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) were identified by means of a reference molecular marker-based genetic map. Replicated phenotypic data was obtained for a number of field-assessed morphological and developmental traits as well as the winter hardiness-associated characters of winter survival and electrical conductivity. Marker-trait association analysis was performed by a number of methods, and a high degree of congruence was observed between the respective results. QTLs were detected for morphological traits such as plant height, tiller size, leaf length, leaf width, fresh weight at harvest, plant type, spikelet number per spike and spike length, as well as the developmental traits of heading date and degree of aftermath heading. A number of traits were significantly correlated, and coincident QTL locations were identified. No significant QTLs for winter survival in the field were identified. However, a QTL for electrical conductivity corresponding to frost tolerance was located dose to a heading date QTL in a region that may show conserved synteny with chromosomal regions associated with both winter hardiness and flowering time variation in cereals. The QTL analysis of multiple phenotypic traits provides the basis for marker assisted selection (MAS) of important agronomic characters, allowing genetic improvement of yield, quality and adaptation in perennial ryegrass breeding., PERENNIAL RYEGRASS is the most widely sown perennial forage grass in temperate regions of the world. 36. Combustion and emission characteristics of direct-injection compression ignition engines by means of two-stage split and early fuel injection

Abstract

The objective of this study was to experimentally clarify the effect of two-stage split and early injection on the combustion and emission characteristics of a direct-injection (DI) diesel engine. Engine tests were carried out using a single-cylinder high-speed DI diesel engine and an injection system, combining an ordinary jerk pump and an electronically controlled high-pressure injection system, KD-3. In these experiments to compare the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics with two-stage split and early injection, a single-stage and early injection was tested. The FT-IR exhaust-gas analyzer simultaneously measured the exhaust emissions of 26 components. The results showed that HCHO, C[H.sub.3]CHO, and C[H.sub.3]COOH were emitted during the very early stage of both single injection and two-stage injection. These concentrations were higher than those from diesel combustion with ordinary fuel injection timings. These exhaust emissions are characteristic components of combustion by premixed compression ignition with extremely early injection. In particular, the HCHO concentration in exhaust was reduced with an increase in the maximum rate of heat release after cool flame due to pre-reaction of pre-mixture. At extremely early injection, the N[O.sub.x] concentration was extremely low; however, the indicated specific fuel consumption (ISFC) was higher than that of ordinary diesel combustion. In the case of two-stage injection, the degree of constant volume is increased, so that ISFC is improved. These results also demonstrated the possibility of reducing HCHO, N[O.sub.x], and smoke emissions by means of two-stage split and early injection.
