Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a multisystem disease affecting respiratory, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, immunological and haematological systems. The most important indices that have been studied are platelet (PLT) indices in addition to the PLT count and red blood cell distribution width (RDW). This retrospective study included 95 patients with COVID-19 and was conducted at the Hospital Isolation, Scientific and Medical Research Centre and Clinical Pathology Department at Zagazig University Hospitals, Egypt over 6 months from March to August 2021. All patients on admission had a full blood count, which included white blood cell (WBC) count, haemoglobin, RDW, PLT count and its indices in addition to PLT-to-WBC ratio (PWR) and PLT-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), which were calculated for all the study patients. There were significant linear correlations for higher levels of the PLR, PWR and RDW and mortality rate (p = 0.03, p 0.001 and p 0.001 respectively). Moreover, on multivariable analysis the RDW, PLT count and PWR levels were independent prognostic predictors for mortality with a hazard ratio [HR] of 1.25 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.09-1.44, p = 0.002), 1.00 (95% CI 0.99-1.00, p = 0.03) and 2.3 (95% CI 1.21-4.48, p = 0.01) respectively. The RDW and PLT indices are accessible predictors that can be valuable prognostic factors for survival assessment and risk stratification of COVID-19.

Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may lead to immunosuppression, leaving patients vulnerable to secondary invasive fungal infection like mucormycosis. The present study aimed to determine whether there are any risk factors associated with mortality in mucormycosis among COVID-19 patients. Patients and Methods: Patients with COVID-19 diagnosed with mucormycosis who received treatment at University Hospitals were included in the study. Complete blood count (CBC), glycated hemoglobin (HBA1c), C-reactive protein (CRP), serum albumin level, creatinine, ferritin levels, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-dimer and histopathological observations were performed for all participants’ specimens. Results: The number (N) of patients included in the study was 46. About 85 % (39/46) of patients had post-COVID-19 syndrome and the other 7 cases were in the active phase of the disease. miRNA 223 /125a and Cordon-bleu Protein Like 1 (COBLL1) are novel biomarkers that can predict prognosis and guide treatment decisions in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Also, there is a growing interest in CLL monitoring based on flow cytometry of receptor tyrosine kinase-like orphan receptor-1 (ROR-1). Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between miRNA 223 /125a and COBLL1 expressions and ROR-1 expression in patients with CLL. Also, the study evaluated the relationship between the expression of these biomarkers with tumor staging and cancer progression.Our study included 40 patients newly diagnosed with B-CLL. In peripheral blood (PB), miRNA 223/125a and COBLL1 expressions were detected by real-time polymerase chain reaction (real-time PCR) and ROR-1 percentage was detected by flow cytometry before and after treatment. Results: High level of COBLL1 expression was statistically significantly associated with high ROR-1 percentage expression (P= 0.03). However, a high level of miRNA 223/125a expression was statistically significantly associated with low ROR-1 percentage expression (P=0.002). The sensitivity and specificity of ROR-1 as a predictor of high WBCs count after treatment were 96.6 and 81.1%, respectively. There was a statistically significant reduction of ROR-1 percentage after treatment compared to before treatment (P0.001).ROR-1 percentage expression can be considered a possible prognostic predictor in CLL along with miRNA 223/125a and COBLL1 expressions. This can be explained by the significant correlation between ROR-1 and the studied molecular biomarkers; miRNA 223/125a and COBLL1. In addition, there was a significantly higher ROR-1 percentage in patients with higher WBC counts. Moreover, there was a significant reduction in ROR-1 percentage after treatment.

Background:Aberrant phenotype is a phenomenon in which lymphoid-associated and other myeloid lineage markers expressed in myeloblasts or myeloid-associated markers expressed in lymphoblasts. Occurrence of aberrant phenotype that has been reported in acute leukemias with varying frequency though its prognostic importance still remains controversial. So the aim of this prospective cohort study was evaluation the outcome of de novo AML patients expressing lymphoid markers(Ly+ AML) correlated with cytogenetic pattern and clinicobiological features.Metods: our prospective cohort study designed to evaluate de novo adult patients having primary AML with the exclusion of acute promyelocytic leukemia admitted to the clinical Hematology Unit, Internal Medicine Department, in a tertiary referral hospital in Egypt, from July 2016 to the June 2019.ResultsPatients were classified according their lymphoid markers expression into two groups Ly+ AML and Ly- AML including; 23 (29.5%) and 55 (70.5%), respectively. After a median 8.133 months (range, 0.3-26 months) as a period of follow up, Ly+ AML patients group was associated with a significantly lower CR rate (p= 0.04). Moreover, Ly+ AML patients group was independently associated with complete response to therapy with OR [95%CI; 0.12-0.98], P=0.047 by using of the multivariate logistic regression model. Regarding survival, no statistical difference was showed in 26 months disease- free survival and overall survival as well.Conclusion: lymphoid markers expression in AML patients was independently associated with Response to therapy. However, it was not reported as an independent predictor of survival.
