Objectives: In this study, we aimed to analyze patient mortality rate after non-operative treatment of hip fractures to determine the distribution of causes of death and to compare factors affecting mortality., Patients and Methods: Between January 2013 and March 2019, a total of 93 patients (17 males, 76 females; mean age: 86.0±7.4 years; range, 64 to 98 years) who had hip fractures and were treated non-operatively were analyzed retrospectively. Survival, date of death, and cause of death were collected and analyzed. Baseline demographics, pre-trauma ambulation, pre- and post-trauma residence status, American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA PS) classification, and Parker's mobility score were compared with one-year mortality rates., Results: The mean follow-up of survivors was 16.1±11.9 (range, 6.3 to 79.6) months. The mean survival of non-survivors was 4.9±6.1 (range, 0.007 to 27.3) months. The 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-month mortality rates were 40.9%, 53.3%, 74.4%, and 87.5%, respectively. Respiratory diseases (33.3%) and cardiovascular diseases (13.6%) were the main causes of death among the patients. There was no statistically significant difference between the patients' age, sex, fracture site, pre-trauma ambulation, pre- and post-trauma residence status, ASA PS classification, Parker's mobility score, and one-year mortality., Conclusion: A significant number of patients are still treated non-operatively after hip fractures, and they have a high mortality rate. Efforts and research are needed to reduce mortality and improve the quality of life.

The use of ultraviolet radiation (UV) technology for the crosslinking of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) is the one of various crosslinking methods, being the alternative to the conventional crosslinking process of solvent-based acrylic systems. It also requires a photoinitiator to absorb the impinging UV and induce photocrosslinking. As previously mentioned, a photoinitiator is one of the important and necessary components in UV-inducted crosslinking of acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesives. The activity of multifunctional conventional saturated photoinitiators of type I and type II, especially benzophenone-based in the photoreactive UV-crosslinkable acrylic PSA was described. The effect of the multifunctional type-II photoinitiators on the acrylic PSA, such as tack, peel adhesion and shear strength were summarized.

Carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is currently used as a lightweight material in various parts of automobiles. However, fiber reinforced plastic (FRP) material may be damaged at the time of joining via mechanical bonding; therefore, adhesion is important. When bonding is conducted without surface CFRP treatment, interfacial destruction occurs during which the adhesive falls off along with the CFRP. Mechanical strength and fracture shape were investigated depending on the surface treatment (pristine, plasma treatment times, and plasma treatment times plus epoxy modified primer coating). The plasma treatment effect was verified using the contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The wettability of the epoxy modified primer (EMP) coating was confirmed through surface morphology analysis, followed by observation of mechanical properties and fracture shape. Based on test data collected from 10 instances of plasma treatment, the EMP coating showed 115% higher strength than that of pristine CFRP. The adhesive failure shape also changed from interfacial failure to mixed-mode failure. Thus, applying an EMP coating during the automotive parts stage enhances the effect of CFRP surface treatment.

Acrylic pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) is used to fix each layer of a flexible display. Acrylic PSA needs to satisfy specific elongation and recovery requirements so that reliability of the flexible display can be achieved. For this reason, we aimed to design an acrylic PSA/acrylic elastomer (AE) blend and to study how some viscoelastic and adhesion properties are influenced by the AE content into the mixed, blended system. Samples were characterized by UV-Vis spectrophotometry for transmittance, texture analysis for adhesion performances, and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) for recovery and viscoelasticity. When acrylic PSA/AE was simply blended, the adhesion performance changed due to the influence of the long molecular chains of AE. Based on this result, the AE content was fixed at 10 wt %, and acrylic PSA prepolymer was crosslinked at different concentrations of crosslinking agent. Peel strength and probe tack decreased as the concentration of crosslinking agent increased, as reported in previous studies. On the other hand, as the content of the crosslinking agent increased, recovery characteristics were improved. Additionally, as the content of the crosslinking agent increased, the storage modulus also increased, although the glass-transition temperature was not affected. In recent years, there has been an increasing need for materials that are environmentally friendly and have functional properties. Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biomass-based polymer, which has attracted research attention as an eco-friendly material. Various studies have been conducted on functionality imparting and performance improvement to extend the field of application of PLA. Particularly, research on natural fiber-reinforced composites have been conducted to simultaneously improve their environmental friendliness and mechanical strength. Research interest in hybrid composites using two or more fillers to realize multiple functions are also increasing. Phase change materials (PCMs) absorb and emit energy through phase transition and can be used as a micro encapsulated structure. In this study, we fabricated hybrid composites using microcapsulated PCM (MPCM) and the natural fibrous filler, kenaf. We aimed to fabricate a composite material with improved endothermic characteristics, mechanical performance, and environmental friendliness. We analyzed the endothermic properties of MPCM and the structural characteristics of two fillers and finally produced an eco-friendly composite material. The PCM and kenaf contents were varied to observe changes in the performance of the hybrid composites. The endothermic properties were determined through differential scanning calorimetry, whereas changes in the physical properties of the hybrid composite were determined by measuring the mechanical properties.

Ultraviolet (UV) curing is a photopolymerization technique resulting in a three-dimensional polymer network from monomers and oligomers after exposure to UV light, which is often used for fusion industry. However, shrinkage is an issue that needs to be resolved. Studies of single substances have been extensively conducted, but studies of mixture systems have not sufficiently been undertaken. In this study, we evaluate the shrinkage phenomenon by studying a monomer/monomer binary system and monomer/macromer composite systems. Shrinkage tends to increase when compounds varying in size are used. Similar to the shrinkage phenomenon, the curing rate is also relatively higher in such systems. After the recent enactment of the chemical castration legislation for sex offenders in Korea, we sought to report primary treatment outcomes for 38 patients at the National Forensic Hospital since 2011. After chemical castration, these patients experienced reductions in frequency and intensity of sexual drive, frequency of masturbation and sexual fantasies. The incidence of adverse effects was similar to that of previous reports. Serial hormonal evaluations showed an association between testosterone level and degree of paraphilic and non-paraphilic sexual thoughts. A notable finding was an unexpected upsurge of testosterone levels with intense sexual drive and fantasy observed during the first 2 months after cessation of treatment. This suggested the need for a temporary anti-androgen therapy or close surveillance during this period. Serum and liver metabolites in rats fed red ginseng (RG) were analyzed by ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The mass data were analyzed by partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to discriminate between control and RG groups and identify metabolites contributing to this discrimination. The RG group was clearly separated from the control group on PLS-DA scores plot for serum samples, but not liver samples. The major metabolites contributing to the discrimination included lipid metabolites (lysophosphatidylcholine, acyl-carnitine, and sphingosine), isoleucine, nicotinamide, and corticosterone in the serum; the blood levels of all but isoleucine were reduced by RG administration. Not all metabolites were positively correlated with the health benefits of RG. However, the blood levels of lysophosphatidylcholine, which stimulate various diseases, and long-chain acylcarnitines and corticosterone, which activate the stress response, were reduced by RG, suggesting long-term RG might relieve stress and prevent physiological and biological problems.

Background: Atopic Dermatitis is a chronic relapsing eczematous skin disease with increasing prevalence and rising costs. It has a clear impact on a patient's quality of life. Many patients are worried about the use of usual care techniques, such as corticosteroids and antihistamine due to the widespread fear of adverse effects. Complementary and alternative medical approaches have been employed to relieve symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis. Hwangryunhaedoktang is among the most strongly preferred and widely used herbal medicines for Atopic Dermatitis in Korea, as it causes very few serious adverse effects.We aim to establish basic clinical efficacy and safety data for Hwangryunhaedoktang, which is approved as an herbal medication by the Korean Food and Drug Administration, in adult patients with Atopic Dermatitis., Methods/designs: This study is a randomised, double blind, placebo-controlled, two-centre trial with two parallel arms (Hwangryunhaedoktang and a placebo). The diagnosis of Atopic Dermatitis will be made according to the criteria of Hanifin and Rajka by two different Oriental medicine doctors. We will include participants experiencing typical conditions of intermittent or continuous Atopic Eczema for six or more months. Participants will receive Hwangryunhaedoktang or a placebo-drug for eight weeks. The total duration of each arm is eleven weeks. Each participant will be examined for signs and symptoms of Atopic Dermatitis before and after taking medication. A follow-up to evaluate the maintenance of safety will be performed two weeks after the final administration of medication., Discussion: This trial will utilize high quality trial methodologies in accordance with consolidated standards of reporting trials guidelines. It will provide evidence for the clinical efficacy and safety evaluation of Hwangryunhaedoktang in adult patients with Atopic Dermatitis. Moreover, we will also employ health-related quality of life questionnaires to assess the changes in quality of life.

It has been firmly established that the transcription factor NRF2 is a critical element in the survival of healthy cells in response to oxidative stress because it up-regulates a wide array of antioxidant genes by binding to the antioxidant-response element (ARE). However, adaptive activation of the NRF2 system after an exposure of cancer cells to chemotherapy can be hypothesized, implying the acquisition of chemoresistance by tumors. In this study we have investigated the potential role of NRF2 signaling in the development of acquired resistance to doxorubicin. The human ovarian carcinoma cell line A2780, which is highly sensitive to doxorubicin, showed low levels of ARE binding and ARE-driven luciferase activity, as well as repressed expression of its target genes compared with resistant ovarian carcinoma SKOV3 and OV90 cells. Doxorubicin-resistant A2780DR cells, established after exposure to stepwise increasing concentrations of doxorubicin, displayed a refractoriness to doxorubicin-induced cell death. Acquisition of doxorubicin resistance in A2780 cells was accompanied by an elevation in NRF2 activity and consequent increase in the expression of the catalytic subunit of gamma-glutamylcysteine ligase and total GSH content. A critical role for NRF2 in the acquired chemoresistance of A2780DR cells could be confirmed by the restoration of doxorubicin sensitivity after stable expression of NRF2-specific shRNA in A2780DR cells, whereas inhibition of NRF2 could not further enhance doxorubicin sensitivity in the parental A2780 cells. These results suggest that the level of NRF2 activity might be a determining factor for doxorubicin sensitivity in ovarian carcinoma cell lines and adaptive activation of the NRF2 system can participate in the development of acquired resistance to anthracycline therapy.

The influence of physicochemical treatments on the catalytic activity of the spent nano-structured three way catalysts (TWCs) was examined to evaluate the possibility of using spent TWCs for removing VOCs. Thermal gases and acid aqueous solutions were used to regenerate the spent nano-structured TWCs. The characterization of the spent catalyst and its modified forms was carried out by using XRD, TEM, ICP, and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. The catalytic activity tests revealed that the spent nano-structured TWCs have a great potential for removing toxic compounds. The activities of catalysts were also found to be highly dependent on the treatment conditions. The acid aqueous treatments were very useful for improving the catalytic activity because they removed various contaminants such as fuel additives, lubricant oil additives, and metallic compounds. However, the thermal gas treated TWCs were less active than the parent TWCs. Furthermore, the activities of the catalysts treated with acids were closely connected with the remaining Pt/Al ratios.

Cisplatin is commonly used for the treatment of several solid tumors. However, its clinical use is often limited by renal toxicity. The indirect antioxidant 3H-1,2-dithiole-3-thione (D3T) has been known to protect cells from oxidative damage by up-regulating the expression of antioxidative genes through the transcription factor NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway. We hypothesized that D3T treatment may be protective against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity by enhancing the antioxidative capacity of renal cells. In cultured murine tubular epithelial cells, D3T facilitates the nuclear accumulation of Nrf2 and the subsequent expression of its target genes such as glutamate cysteine ligase (GCL). Increased GSH pool in D3T-treated renal cells appears to be associated with amelioration of cisplatin-mediated cell death. Protective effects of D3T were also observed in mice. Oral administration of D3T (0.25mmol/kg) increased the expression of GCL in mouse kidney, which resulted in suppression of cisplatin-mediated increases in blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine. Histopathological changes representing cisplatin-induced acute renal failure were also effectively ameliorated by D3T treatment. Collectively, these results indicate that pharmacological activation of the Nrf2 pathway might have a beneficial effect on reducing chemotherapy-associated cytotoxic adverse effects.

Four ellagic acid rhamnosides were isolated from the stem bark of Eucalyptus globulus. Their structures have been established on the basis of the analysis of their 1H NMR, 13C NMR, HMBC, IR and MS spectral data. The HMBC data of these compounds were most useful for their structure determinations, with these bring determined to be 3-O-methylellagic acid 3'-O-alpha-rhamnopyranoside, 3-O-methylellagic acid 3'-O-alpha-3''-O-acetylrhamnopyranoside, 3-O-methylellagic acid 3'-O-alpha-2''-O-acetylrhamnopyranoside, 3-O-methylellagic acid 3'-O-alpha-4''-O-acetylrhamnopyranoside, respectively. Their antioxidant activities were evaluated by measuring the inhibition of lipid peroxidation using rat liver microsomes, with IC50 values of 10.0-14.0 microg/ml.

Twelve compounds with lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity were isolated from the stem bark of E. globulus. Their structures were assigned as a new aromatic monoterpene (1) and eleven known compounds, pinoresinol (2), vomifoliol (3), 3,4,5-trimethoxyphenol 1-O-beta-D-(6'-O-galloyl)glucopyranoside (4), methyl gallate (5), rhamnazin (6), rhamnetin (7), eriodictyol (8), quercetin (9), taxifolin (10), engelitin (11), and catechin (12) on the basis of UV, mass, and NMR spectroscopic analyses. These compounds except vomifoliol significantly inhibited lipid peroxidation in rat liver microsome.

This manuscript introduces to the podiatric community the Truncated Cone Reamer (TCR) System for precise fashioning of the first metatarsal and proximal phalanx for a first metatarsophalangeal joint peg-in-hole type arthrodesis. As the name of the system suggests, the device reams out a truncated male cone at the metatarsal head and a corresponding female cone at the phalangeal base in the desired position. There is congruous cancellous bony contact at all apposing surfaces of the truncated cone for bony consolidation. The peg-in-hole intrinsically confers the arthrodesis stability. The authors present a step-by-step use of the TCR system, and a 1 year follow-up case study in which the TCR system was used as a template.
