Abstract

This study examined the role of three personality characteristics, Psychoticism, Extraversion, and Neuroticism (PEN), on viewers' level of attention to five different genres of television programming: news, soap operas, reality shows, talk shows, and crime dramas. A survey of 381 college students showed psychoticism to be negatively related to attention to news and reality show programming. There was a positive relationship between extraversion and attention to reality programming. Finally, neuroticism was positively associated with attention to all genres assessed. 31. Why we migrate in the virtual world: factors affecting switching intentions in SNS.

Abstract

The popularity of Social Networking Sites (SNS) continues to steadily increase, but their success depends on user turnover. Understanding the factors that impact user intentions to switch SNS services is therefore important. This study adapted the push–pull–mooring framework developed in migration literature to examine these factors. In particular, we proposed the concept of SNS fatigue as a push factor. Our survey of 180 Korean SNS users revealed that two SNS fatigue factors (SNS interaction overload and unwanted relationships) and two pull factors (alternative attraction and peer pressure) significantly influenced users' switching intentions. However, we did not find the effect of the mooring factor (switching cost). Abstract

The complement system is a powerful innate immune system deployed in the immediate response to pathogens and cancer cells. Complement factor H (CFH), one of the regulators involved in the complement cascade, can interrupt the death of target cells. Certain types of cancer, such as breast cancer, can adopt an aggressive phenotype, such as breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs), through enhancement of the defense system against complement attack by amplifying various complement regulators. However, little is known about the association between CFH and BCSCs. In the present study, the roles of CFH in the CSC characteristics and radioresistance of MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells were investigated. CFH knockdown in MDA-MB-231 cells decreased the viability of the cells upon complement cascade activation. Notably, CFH knockdown also decreased cell survival and suppressed mammosphere formation, cell migration and cell invasion by attenuating radioresistance. Additionally, CFH knockdown further enhanced irradiation-induced apoptosis through G2/M cell cycle arrest. It was also discovered that CFH knockdown attenuated the aggressive phenotypes of cancer cells by regulating CSC-associated gene expression. Finally, by microarray analysis, it was found that the expression of erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1-like 3 (EPB41L3) was markedly increased following CFH knockdown. EPB41L3 inhibited ERK and activated the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. Taken together, these results indicated that CFH knockdown attenuated CSC properties and radioresistance in human breast cancer cells via controlling MAPK signaling and through upregulation of the tumor suppressor, EPB41L3. 37. The Impact of Large-Scale Renewable Energy on Grid Small-Signal and Frequency Stability: Modelling, Analysis, and Control

Abstract

This thesis intends to discuss the influence of renewable energy sources (RES) on the stability of power system. Although integration of renewable brings incalculable optimistic aspects, the variability of RES concerning fluctuation of active power may exhibit adverse influence on stability issues regarding small-signal and frequency stability point of views. Thus, this thesis discusses those two stability aspects. From small-signal stability perspectives, the agenda is divided into three parts. First small signal research investigates the influence of time-varying RES on low frequency oscillation, which triggers weak frequency band of vulnerable modes on remote area. Second study of small signal is to observe the influence of high penetration change on interarea oscillation. Third research of small signal is to investigate the influence of solar irradiation and wind velocity with stochastic characteristics on small signal stability due to the change of the generation quantity of photovoltaics (PV) and wind turbine generators (WTG). From frequency stability perspectives, the future grid might be operated under reduced inertia and high penetration, resulting in deterioration of frequency stability. Against this backdrop, ESS emerges as a countermeasure for the implications of large fleet of RES. First chapter of frequency stability aspects introduces ESS methodology enabling ESS to coordinate ancillary service among existing equipment with proposed method: droop control and State-of-Charge feedback (DaSOF). The last chapter suggests a method for EV application, based on Smart Charging method and DaSOF method. The efficacy of large group of EV application with this method against variability of RES is investigated and proved on the Jeju island system in Korea.
