The relatively small tensile strength of concrete makes this material particularly vulnerable to cracking. However, the reality is that it is not always possible and practically useful to conduct studies on high-quality sealing cracks due to their inaccessibility or small opening width. Despite the fact that currently there are many technologies for creating self-healing cement composites, one of the most popular is the technology for creating a biologically active self-healing mechanism for concrete. It is based on the process of carbonate ion production by cellular respiration or urease enzymes by bacteria, which results in the precipitation of calcium carbonate in concrete. This technology is environmentally friendly and promising from a scientific and practical point of view. This research focuses on the technology of creating autonomous self-healing concrete using a biological crack-healing mechanism. The research methodology consisted of four main stages, including an analysis of the already conducted global studies, ecological and economic analysis, the prospects and advantages of further studies, as well as a discussion and the conclusions. A total of 257 works from about 10 global databases were analyzed. An overview of the physical, mechanical and operational properties of bioconcrete and their changes is presented, depending on the type of active bacteria and the method of their introduction into the concrete mixture. An analysis of the influence of the automatic addition of various types of bacteria on various properties of self-healing bioconcrete is carried out, and an assessment of the influence of the method of adding bacteria to concrete on the process of crack healing is also given. A comparative analysis of various techniques for creating self-healing bioconcrete was performed from the point of view of technical progress, scientific potential, the methods of application of this technology, and their resulting advantages, considered as the factor impacting on strength and life cycle. The main conditions for a quantitative assessment of the sustainability and the possibility of the industrial implementation of the technology of self-healing bioconcrete are identified and presented. Various techniques aimed at improving the recovery process of such materials are considered. An assessment of the influence of the strength of cement mortar after adding bacteria to it is also given. Images obtained using electron microscopy methods are analyzed in relation to the life cycle of bacteria in mineral deposits of microbiological origin. The application of geopolymer composites in the construction of environmentally sustainable buildings and low-carbon structures has generated considerable interest, presenting an alternative and eco-friendly approach to composite materials. The purpose of this research is to develop a new composition of geopolymer concrete, dispersedly reinforced with sisal fiber, and investigate its structure and physical and mechanical properties. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed compositions, the fresh properties of the geopolymer concrete mixture—density and slump—and the properties of the hardened composite, namely, the compressive strength, flexural strength and water absorption, were studied. The most rational composition of the alkaline activator was established, and sisal fiber (SF) was protected from alkaline degradation by adding styrene-acrylic copolymer at an amount of 5% and microsilica at an amount of 3% to the concrete mixture. It was determined that the most optimal SF content was 1.0%. The compressive strength exhibited a maximum increase of 12.8%, the flexural strength showed a significant increase of 76.5%, and the water absorption displayed a decrease of 10.3%. The geopolymer fiber-reinforced concrete developed in this study is an environmentally friendly replacement for traditional types of concrete with cement binders and can be used for the manufacture of small architectural forms and landscaping elements. The recycling of the aquaculture waste into clam powder reduces solid emissions and natural resources, which is important for Portland cement production. This study determines the feasibility of using recycled river shell waste as a partial replacement for cement in concrete technology. The study used normative methods and optical microscopy; the properties of cement mixtures, such as normal consistency, setting time (ST), compressive and flexural strength, were studied. Research findings have shown that the inclusion of river shell powder (RSP) in cement mixtures can reduce water demand and a decrease in setting time with increasing RSP content. It was also found that the strength of the cement mixture can be maintained with an RSP content of up to 10%. The following properties of the concrete were determined: workability, compressive strength (CS), and water absorption. Using RSP as a partial replacement for cement has been proven to elevate the slump of the fresh concrete cone. CS is maintained at a level comparable to the control composition, with an RSP content of no more than 8%, and water-absorbing is reduced by 7.31%. This study created new compositions, and the links between the ingredients, properties, and structure of cement composites modified with river shell powder were investigated. The application of geopolymer concrete in buildings and structures is becoming widespread because of its low cost and high strength characteristics. At the same time, the capabilities of geopolymer concrete are not fully used, especially to strengthen flexural properties. The article examines the problems of developing an effective composition of geopolymer concrete based on ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) by selecting the optimal composition of the alkaline activator and the amount of basalt fiber (BF). To determine the degree of effectiveness of the proposed formulation solutions, the characteristics of geopolymer fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) were determined. It has been investigated the most effective composition of an alkaline activator is an activator containing a NaOH solution with a molarity of 12 M. The most optimal dosage of BF is 1.5% by weight of GGBS. The increase in compressive and flexural strength for the most effective composition of geopolymer FRC 12 M/BF1.5, which combines the most effective parameters of formulation solutions, compared to the least effective composition 8 M/BF0 was 40.54% and 93.75%, respectively, and the decrease of water absorption was 45.75%. The obtained scientific result represents a significant empirical basis for future research in the field of geopolymer FRC. Foam concrete is a popular energy-efficient construction material with a fairly wide range of usage in buildings and structures. Increasing ecological efficiency and reducing construction costs by the application of different types of industrial waste in the manufacturing technology of this composite is a promising direction. The main goal of this study is to investigate the possibility of coal dust (CD) waste inclusion in the technology of energy-efficient cellular concrete produced by foam concrete technology. Test samples of foam concrete were made using coal dust by partially replacing cement in the range of 0–10% in increments of 2%. The following primary characteristics of foam concrete were studied: fluidity of mixtures; compressive strength; density; thermal conductivity of foam concrete. An X-ray diffraction analysis of foam concrete composites was performed, which showed changes in their phase composition when using coal dust as a modifier. Coal dust in rational quantities from 2% to 6% improves the physical and mechanical characteristics of foam concrete and increases the structure uniformity. The optimal values of the foam concrete characteristics were recorded at a dosage of coal dust of 6%. At the same time, the density decreased by 2.3%, the compressive strength increased by 15.6%, and the thermal conductivity coefficient decreased by 8.9% compared to the ordinary composition. The use of the resulting foam concrete is advisable in enclosing structures to create high energy efficiency of buildings and structures due to the improved structure and properties. Industrial waste usage in the technology of construction materials is currently in a relevant and promising direction. Materials made of industrial waste have a lower cost and are highly environmentally friendly. The objective of this study is to develop effective compositions of sulfur concrete based on the maximum possible number of various wastes of the local industry for this and to investigate the characteristics of this composite. Test samples of sulfur concrete were made from sulfur, fly ash, mineral aggregates and bitumen additive. The dosages of fly ash, sand and bitumen varied, while the content of sulfur and crushed stone remained constant. The following main characteristics of sulfur concrete were determined: density; compressive strength; and water absorption. Tests of sulfur concrete were carried out after 1 day and 28 days of hardening. The best values of compressive strength (24.8 MPa) and water absorption (0.9%) were recorded for the composition of sulfur concrete at the age of 28 days with the following content of components: sulfur—25%, modified with 4% bitumen of its mass; fly ash—10%; crushed stone—40%; and sand—25%. The optimal composition of modified sulfur concrete showed compressive strength up to 78% more and water absorption up to 53% less than the control composition. The characteristics of the sulfur concrete samples after 28 days of hardening differ slightly from the values after 1 day of hardening (up to 1.8%). One of the most promising ways to solve the problem of reducing the rate of depletion of natural non-renewable components of concrete is their complete or partial replacement with renewable plant counterparts that are industrial and agricultural waste. The research significance of this article lies in the determination at the micro- and macro-levels of the principles of the relationship between the composition, the process of structure formation and the formation of properties of concrete based on coconut shells (CSs), as well as the substantiation at the micro- and macro-levels of the effectiveness of such a solution from the point of view of fundamental and applied materials science. The aim of this study was to solve the problem of substantiating the feasibility of concrete consisting of a mineral cement–sand matrix and aggregate in the form of crushed CS, as well as finding a rational combination of components and studying the structure and characteristics of concrete. Test samples were manufactured with a partial substitution of natural coarse aggregate with CS in an amount from 0% to 30% in increments of 5% by volume. The following main characteristics have been studied: density, compressive strength, bending strength and prism strength. The study used regulatory testing and scanning electron microscopy. The density of concrete decreased to 9.1% with increasing the CS content to 30%. The highest values for the strength characteristics and coefficient of construction quality (CCQ) were recorded for concretes containing 5% CS: compressive strength—38.0 MPa, prism strength—28.9 MPa, bending strength—6.1 MPa and CCQ—0.01731 MPa × m3/kg. The increase in compressive strength was 4.1%, prismatic strength—4.0%, bending strength—3.4% and CCQ—6.1% compared with concrete without CS. Increasing the CS content from 10% to 30% inevitably led to a significant drop in the strength characteristics (up to 42%) compared with concrete without CS. Analysis of the microstructure of concrete containing CS instead of part of the natural coarse aggregate revealed that the cement paste penetrates into the pores of the CS, thereby creating good adhesion of this aggregate to the cement–sand matrix. In the theory of reinforced concrete, the issue on strength of the oblique beam sections is more complicated than that on the standard sections, since it depends on many factors. The change of at least one of them leads to a significant change in the carrying capacity and in the structural damage pattern. This is due to the fact that at the operating level of the load, all conventional reinforced concrete structures work with cracks, which must be considered in the calculation. However, in the existing regulatory documents and public sources, this issue is not specified. This paper considers the effect of initial cracks on the strength of oblique cross sections of the reinforced concrete beams strengthened with carbon fiber. The experimental studies results obtained through the transverse force testing of forty-two prototypes made of heavy concrete of B30 design grade are presented. The test samples had initial oblique cracks of 0.6-0.9 mm width and were reinforced with three composite U stirrups from the fabric based on unidirectional carbon fibers in the shear span. Initial cracks in the beams were formed at three values of the shear span – 1.5h0, 2h0 and 2.5h0. The test data show the impact of initial cracks on the efficiency of composite reinforcement of oblique cross sections of the prototypes at various values of shear spans.

Currently, there is great interest in geopolymer composites as an alternative and environmentally friendly basis for compositions for restoring the facades of historical and modern buildings. Although the use of these compounds is much smaller than conventional concrete, replacing their main components with ecological geopolymer counterparts still has the potential to significantly reduce the carbon footprint and reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emitted into the atmosphere. The study aimed to obtain geopolymer concrete with improved physical, mechanical, and adhesive characteristics, designed to restore the finishing of building facades. Regulatory methods, chemical analysis, and scanning electron microscopy were applied. The most optimal dosages of additives of ceramic waste powder (PCW) and polyvinyl acetate (PVA) have been established, at which geopolymer concretes have the best characteristics: 20% PCW introduced into the geopolymer instead of a part of metakaolin, and 6% PVA. The combined use of PCW and PVA additives in optimal dosages provides the maximum increase in strength and physical characteristics. Compressive strength increased by up to 18%, bending strength increased by up to 17%, water absorption of geopolymer concretes decreased by up to 54%, and adhesion increased by up to 9%. The adhesion of the modified geopolymer composite is slightly better with a concrete base than with a ceramic one (up to 5%). Geopolymer concretes modified with PCW and PVA additives have a denser structure with fewer pores and microcracks. According to the sustainable development concept, it is necessary to solve the issue of replacing fiber from synthetic materials with natural, environmentally friendly, and cheap-to-manufacture renewable resources and agricultural waste. Concrete is the primary material for which fibers are intended. Therefore, the use of vegetable waste in concrete is an essential and urgent task. Coconut fiber has attracted attention in this matter, which is a by-product of the processing of coconuts and makes it relevant. This work aims to investigate the experimental base for the strength properties of dispersed fiber-reinforced concrete with coconut fibers, as well as the influence of the fiber percentage on the mechanical, physical, and deformation characteristics. The samples were made of concrete with a compressive strength at 28 days from 40 to 50 MPa. The main mechanical characteristics such as strength in compression (cubic and prismatic) and tension (axial and bending), as well as the material's compressive and tensile strains, were investigated. The percentage of reinforcement with coconut fibers was taken in the range of 0% to 2.5% with an increment of 0.25 wt.%. Tests were carried out 28 days after the manufacture. The microstructure of the resulting compositions was investigating using the electron microscopy method. The most rational percentage of coconut fibers was obtained at 1.75%. The increase in mechanical indicators was 24% and 26% for compression and axial compression, respectively, and 42% and 43% for tensile bending and axial tension, respectively. The ultimate strains in compression were raised by 46% and in tension by 51%. The elastic modulus was increased by 16%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
