Greenhouse gas emissions in the shipping industry have been a major challenge in the sustainability of international transportation. This paper studied shore power management for river shipping, which has become increasingly popular in some international transport networks. We discussed stakeholders’ incentives and concerns regarding shore power and found that vessel owners play one of the dominant roles in the wide implementation of shore power. Then, a mathematical model is developed to show the advantages of shore power by combining it with an analysis of the optimal oil inventory plan for vessels. When the plan of the oil inventory on vessels is well designed, using shore power could be more beneficial than oil even if the shore power has a higher price than the latter because using shore power can provide the vessel with more options to improve the oil inventory plan by reducing oil consumption during berthing and the number of refueling. Sensitivity analyses are conducted to obtain a better understanding of the impact of the parameters on the performance of shore power. Our policy suggestions and findings can shed lights on how to make incentive policies for a wider and easier implementation of shore power under international shipping.

Some conditions to guarantee the unique solution of the above AVE are gained. The corresponding results of the above published works are generalized.

Bio-based alternative fuels have received increasing attention with growing concerns about depletion of fossil reserves and environmental deterioration. The development of new combustion concepts in internal combustion engines requires a better understanding of autoignition characteristics of the bio-based alternative fuels. This study investigates two cases of alternative fuels, namely, a kerosene-type fuel farnesane and an oxygenated fuel, TPGME, and compares those fuels with full-boiling range of fuels with similar cetane number. The homogeneous autoignition and spray ignition characteristics of the selected fuels are studied using a modified CFR octane rating engine and a cetane rating instrument, respectively. When comparing farnesane with a full-boiling range counterpart (HRJ8), their similar cetane ratings result in comparable combustion heat release, but the overall ignition reactivity of farnesane is stronger than HRJ8 during the pre-ignition process. Results from a constant volume spray combustion chamber indicate that the spray process of farnesane and HRJ8 strongly influences the overall ignition delay of each fuel. Despite the similar cetane ratings of TPGME and n-heptane, TPGME shows greater apparent low-temperature oxidation reactivity at low compression ratios in the range from CR 4.0-5.5 than n-heptane. A simplified model focused on the key reaction pathways of low-temperature oxidation of TPGME has been applied to account for the stronger low-temperature reactivity of TPGME, supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Regardless of the similar cetane ratings of the fuels, n-heptane and JP-8/SPK lead to similar total ignition delay times, while TPGME shows the shortest overall ignition delay times in the constant volume combustion chamber.

Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4) plays an important role in mediating gene transcription involved in cancers and non-cancer diseases such as acute heart failure and inflammatory diseases. In this work, multiple short molecular dynamics (MSMD) simulations are integrated with a molecular mechanics generalized Born surface area (MM-GBSA) approach to decipher binding selectivity of three inhibitors 8NS, 82Y, and 837 toward two domains BD1 and BD2 of BRD4. The results demonstrate that the enthalpy effects play critical roles in selectivity identification of inhibitors toward BD1 and BD2, determining that 8NS has better selectivity toward BD2 than BD1, while 82Y and 837 more favorably bind to BD1 than BD2. A residue-based free-energy decomposition method was used to calculate an inhibitor-residue interaction spectrum and unveil contributions of separate residues to binding selectivity. The results identify six common residues, containing (P82, P375), (V87, V380), (L92, L385), (L94, L387), (N140, N433), and (I146, V439) individually belonging to (BD1, BD2) of BRD4, and yield a considerable binding difference of inhibitors to BD1 and BD2, suggesting that these residues play key roles in binding selectivity of inhibitors toward BD1 and BD2 of BRD4. Therefore, these results provide useful dynamics information and a structure affinity relationship for the development of highly selective inhibitors targeting BD1 and BD2 of BRD4.

Background Non-schistosoma-associated urinary bladder squamous cell carcinoma (SqCC) has low incidence and is associated with chronic inflammation. Due to its unique etiology and pathology, expression of programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) in SqCC could be different from that of urothelial carcinoma, which may contribute to different responses to immunotherapy. In this study, we intended to explore the expression profile and prognostic value of PD-L1 in non-schistosoma-associated urinary bladder SqCC under the consideration of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes' (TILs) density. Methods We conducted a retrospective study to review 604 bladder cancer patients who received radical cystectomy (RC) from 2009 to 2013 in Peking University First Hospital. We enrolled 67 bladder SqCC patients in total, including pure SqCC (n=19) and mixed SqCC (n=48, with urothelial carcinoma). PD-L1 protein expression and TILs density were evaluated by immunohistochemistry. Results Nine female and 58 male patients (median age 67.4 years) were enrolled in the present study. There were 15 stage T1-2 patients and 52 stage T3-4 patients. 27 patients had N1-2 lymph node metastasis. Overall, 61.2% cases were PD-L1-positive. Dense TILs coincided with higher PD-L1 expression rate. Median survival time of PD-L1 positive cases was significantly higher than negative cases (P=0.026). During multivariate analysis, positive PD-L1 expression and dense TILs were independent protective factors affecting overall survival (OS, PD-L1: P=0.022; TILs: P=0.010) and progression free survival (PFS, PD-L1: P=0.018; TILs: P=0.009). Conclusions PD-L1 expression and dense TILs were frequently detected in urinary bladder SqCC tumors. Positive PD-L1 expression and dense TILs were correlated with better survival outcomes in non-schistosoma-associated urinary bladder SqCC. The immunotherapy targeting PD-L1 might be helpful to bladder SqCC patients.

In this paper, based on the shift splitting (SS) technique, we propose a special SS iteration method for solving the absolute value equation (AVE), which is obtained by reformulating equivalently the AVE as a two-by-two block nonlinear equation. Theoretical analysis shows that the special SS method is absolutely convergent under proper conditions. Numerical experiments are given to demonstrate the feasibility, robustness and effectiveness of the special SS method.

Background After radical prostatectomy, the optimal length of postoperative catheterization time remains to be determined. This study investigates the impact of catheter removal time on urinary continence and overactive bladder symptoms after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP).Methods Two hundred and fifty consecutive patients underwent RARP by a single surgeon between November 2020 and May 2021. Time to catheter removal was categorized into 7, 10, and ≥ 14 days. Continence was defined as no more than 1 pad used or no more than 20 grams of urine leakage per 24 hours. The patients' continence rates and overactive bladder symptom score (OABSS) were assessed at 48 hours, 1 week, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks after catheter removal.Results Overall, continence rates were 36% 48 hours after catheter removal, 55.6% 1 week, 74.8% 4 weeks, 98.4% 12 weeks, and 100% 24 weeks after catheter removal. The median time to regain continence was 1 week. After stratification according to catheterization time, no significant difference in continence rates was found between different groups at each time point after catheter removal. Longer catheterization was not an independent predictor of continence recovery (10 days: OR 0.985, 95% CI 0.689-1.409, p = 0.936; ≥14 days: OR 1.194, 95% CI 0.869-1.642, p = 0.274). The presence of diabetes was associated with worse continence outcomes (OR 1.535, 95% CI 1.105-2.132, p = 0.011). The mean OABSS of patients in the continent group were significantly lower than the incontinent group at 48 hours, 1 week, and 4 weeks after catheter removal. No significant difference in OABSS was found between different catheterization time groups at each time point after catheter removal.Conclusions Our results demonstrated that different catheterization time (7 days, 10 days, ≥14 days) is not associated with short-, intermediate-, long-term continence outcomes or overactive bladder symptoms.

In this paper, a counter-flow rotary kiln incineration system with a processing capacity of 40 t/d of an environmental protection company in Jiangsu Province was used as the research object, and the mixed pyrolysis model and computational fluid dynamics（CFD）model of the counter-flow rotary kiln incineration system were established using Aspen plus and Fluent software. The influence of the operating temperature of the rotary kiln, the heating value of solid waste, the operating load of the rotary kiln, and the primary air volume and primary air speed on the operating effect of the rotary kiln were explored. Operating temperature, primary air volume and wind speed can all have a greater impact on the incineration performance of the counterflow rotary kiln. When the operating temperature of the counter-flow rotary kiln is greater than 800 o C, the hazardous waste heat value is not less than 1500 kcal/kg, and the primary wind speed is 1.5 m/s, the operating effect of the counter-flow rotary kiln incineration system is the best. The simulation results can provide theoretical guidance for the design and optimal operation of the counterflow rotary kiln incineration system.

Combining torrefaction with fast pyrolysis is an achievable route for producing long-chain ether precursors. The results of structural characterization for native and torrefied holocellulose indicated that with increasing torrefaction temperature, the crystallinity index (CrI) decreased slightly and then sharply increased; hydroxyls, O-acetyl branches, ether bond and β-1,4-glycosidic bond were eliminated but carbonyls increased. Maximum mass loss rate and apparent activation energy increased after torrefaction. With an increase in torrefaction temperature, gaseous yield continuously dropped, and liquid product yield climbed to the highest point of 49.04% for holocellulose torrefied at 240 °C (240CS). Torrefaction was unfavorable for the production of small-molecule gases. The bio-oil analysis demonstrated that the yield of acetic acid decreased from 6.35% to 1.43% with torrefaction temperature increasing from 105 °C to 260 °C. Significantly, yields of targeted compounds were dramatically improved after torrefaction, and 240CS afforded the maximum carbon yield of 14.79%.

Wet deposition has been well recognized to be affected by species concentration and precipitation; nevertheless, the regimes in the controlling factor of concentration or precipitation have not yet been clarified. Using a trace element, selenium (Se), with dual effects on human health as a testbed, we first reproduce the spatial distribution of atmospheric Se concentrations and wet deposition fluxes through GEOS-Chem on a global scale, and examine the spatial patterns and relative importance of anthropogenic emissions vs. natural emissions over various regions around the world. We find that over most Northern Hemisphere continental regions, anthropogenic emissions are the dominant source for atmospheric Se concentration and deposition, while it is dominated by natural sources in the other areas. Nested grid simulations covering China and the continental United States are further conducted. The factors (i.e., Se concentration and precipitation) controlling the wet deposition flux of atmospheric Se are analyzed in detail, through the construction of wet deposition-concentration-precipitation (WETD-C-P) diagram for two regions (mainland China and the continental United States) based on the monthly results. The two regions show distinctive features, reflecting the different spatial patterns of Se emissions and precipitation. Both Se emissions and precipitation are higher in the eastern United States than that in the western United States. In contrast, the emissions and precipitation in northern and southern China show dipole features with stronger emissions over the northern side and higher precipitation on the southern side. We further investigate the impacts of future emission changes in China on atmospheric Se deposition and its sensitivity to emissions and precipitation, revealing a modulation of regime shifts, i.e., from the precipitation dominant regime to the concurrent governance of both precipitation and emissions. The proposed WETD-C-P relationship is useful in elucidating the regime and factors governing the spatial and temporal variations in wet deposition.
