Solar energy is potentially the largest source of renewable energy for providing electrical power for human society. However, significant advances are required to make photovoltaic technologies have a low-carbon footprint in manufacture, be environmentally friendly at the end of their lives through recyclability, and be biodegradable. Here we report dissolvable organic photovoltaic devices based on poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), which show equal power conversion efficiency to their glass substrate-based counterparts. We use a novel method of including smectic liquid crystal (7-dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2- b][1]benzothiophene, C8-BTBT) as a crystal phase regulator in the heterojunction donor:acceptor polymer system to maintain the disposable organic solar cell efficiency without pre- or post-thermal annealing. The results show strong promise not only for more sustainable solar-cell fabrication but also as disposable and biocompatible solar cells for self-powered (energy harvesting) wearable and biomedical devices.

Abstracts Quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QD-LEDs) are considered as competitive candidate for next-generation displays or lightings. Recent advances in the synthesis of core/shell quantum dots (QDs) and tailoring procedures for achieving their high quantum yield have facilitated the emergence of high-performance QD-LEDs. Meanwhile, the charge-carrier dynamics in QD-LED devices, which constitutes the remaining core research area for further improvement of QD-LEDs, is, however, poorly understood yet. Here, we propose a charge transport model in which the charge-carrier dynamics in QD-LEDs are comprehensively described by computer simulations. The charge-carrier injection is modelled by the carrier-capturing process, while the effect of electric fields at their interfaces is considered. The simulated electro-optical characteristics of QD-LEDs, such as the luminance, current density and external quantum efficiency (EQE) curves with varying voltages, show excellent agreement with experiments. Therefore, our computational method proposed here provides a useful means for designing and optimising high-performance QD-LED devices.

Abstract The boom of plant phenotype highlights the need to measure the physiological characteristics of an individual plant. However, continuous real‐time monitoring of a plant's internal physiological status remains challenging using traditional silicon‐based sensor technology, due to the fundamental mismatch between rigid sensors and soft and curved plant surfaces. Here, the first flexible electronic sensing device is reported that can harmlessly cohabitate with the plant and continuously monitor its stem sap flow, a critical plant physiological characteristic for analyzing plant health, water consumption, and nutrient distribution. Due to a special design and the materials chosen, the realized plant‐wearable sensor is thin, soft, lightweight, air/water/light‐permeable, and shows excellent biocompatibility, therefore enabling the sap flow detection in a continuous and non‐destructive manner. The sensor can serve as a noninvasive, high‐throughput, low‐cost toolbox, and holds excellent potentials in phenotyping. Furthermore, the real‐time investigation on stem flow insides watermelon reveals a previously unknown day/night shift pattern of water allocation between fruit and its adjacent branch, which has not been reported before.

Abstract Background Both grain size and grain number are significant for rice yield. In the past decade, a number of genes related to grain size and grain number have been documented, however, the regulatory mechanisms underlying them remains ambiguous. Results We identified a rice small grain (sg2) mutant in an EMS mutant library generated from an indica variety, Shuhui498. Using the MutMap gene mapping strategy, we identified two linkage regions on chromosome 7 and 8, respectively, consistent with the segregation ratios in the F2 population. We focused on the linkage region on chromosome 8, and named this locus as 08sg2. One of three SNPs identified in the linkage region was located in an exon of OsBAK1, leading to a nonsynonymous mutation in the kinase domain. The plant harboring the mutant version 08sg2 locus exhibited a decreased grain size, grain number and plant height. Cytological analysis indicated that 08SG2 regulated spikelet hull development by affecting cell proliferation. The grain size and number of knockout mutants of OsBAK1 in the japonica background were significantly decreased, but less so than in 08sg2, supporting the idea that the SNP in OsBAK1 was responsible for the 08sg2 phenotype, but that 08SG2/OsBAK1 function differently in indica and japonica backgrounds. 08sg2 was insensitive to 24-epiBL, and the expression of BR-related genes was obviously altered in 08sg2. The proportionally decreased grain length when 08sg2 and GS3 were combined indicate that 08SG2 and GS3 regulate grain length independently. Conclusions Our work shows that 08SG2/OsBAK1 is important for rice yield in both indica and japonica backgrounds, by regulating grain size and grain number, and the function of 08SG2/OsBAK1 is obviously affected by genetic background. The amino acid substituted in 08sg2 is highly conserved among different species, supporting the idea that it is important for the molecular function of 08SG2/OsBAK1. Together, our work is helpful for fully understanding the function of 08SG2/OsBAK1.

Electronic properties of cubic boron nitride (c-BN) doped with group IIA elements were systematically investigated using the first principle calculation based on density functional theory. The electronic bandgap of c-BN was found to be narrowed when the impurity atom substituted either the B (IIA→B) or the N (IIA→N) atom. For IIA→B, a shallow accept level degenerated into valence band (VB); while for IIA→N, a shallow donor level degenerated conduction band (CB). In the cases of IIBe→N and IIMg→N, deep donor levels were also induced. Moreover, a zigzag bandgap narrowing pattern was found, which is in consistent with the variation pattern of dopants’ radius of electron occupied outer s-orbital. From the view of formation energy, the substitution of B atom under N-rich conditions and the substitution of N atom under B-rich conditions were energetically favored. Our simulation results suggested that Mg and Ca are good candidates for p-type dopants, and Ca is the best candidate for n-type dopant.

Abstract Background This study aimed to explore the association between the stress hyperglycemia ratio (SHR) and short- and long-term outcomes in critically ill patients with sepsis. Methods This retrospective observational cohort study was conducted using the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV (MIMIC-IV v2.2) database. Patients were categorized into 4 SHR quartiles. The main focus was on in-hospital mortality and 1-year all-cause mortality as primary endpoints, while intensive care unit and hospital stays were considered as secondary outcomes. Regression and subgroup analyses were used to assess the correlation between SHR and the primary and secondary outcomes. Restricted cubic spline analysis was utilized to explore the nonlinear relationships between SHR and in-hospital and 1-year all-cause mortality. Results This study included two groups of patients, comprising 7456 and 6564 individuals. The in-hospital and 1-year mortality was 11.96% and 17.96% in Cohort 1 and 2, respectively. SHR was associated with an elevated risk of in-hospital mortality (OR: 2.08, 95%CI 1.66–2.61) and 1-year mortality (HR: 1.70, 95% CI 1.42–2.04). Patients in SHR quartile 4 had a higher risk of in-hospital (OR: 1.86, 95% CI 1.51–2.30) and 1-year (HR: 1.44, 95% CI 1.23–1.69) mortality than those in quartile 2. Restricted cubic spline analysis showed a “J-shaped” relationship between SHR and all-cause mortality in both cohorts. The relationship between high SHR and mortality remained consistent across almost all predefined subgroups. Conclusions Our study suggests that high SHR is associated with increased in-hospital and 1-year mortality in critically ill sepsis patients. Further investigations are needed to validate these results.

Abstract Numerous risk factors for oesophageal cancer are linked to lifestyle habits, but the role of early-life factors in its incidence and mortality is unclear. Using UK Biobank data, we explore the association among breastfeeding, maternal smoking, smoking in offspring, and oesophageal cancer risk in adult offspring via multivariable Cox regression. Here, we show that being breastfed, compared with not being breastfed, is associated with a lower risk of oesophageal cancer incidence (HR: 0.83, 95% CI: 0.70–0.98) and mortality (HR: 0.74, 95% CI: 0.61–0.89) in adult offspring. Additionally, it is associated with a reduced impact of smoking in offspring on oesophageal cancer incidence (HR: 0.79, 95% CI: 0.64-0.96) and mortality (HR: 0.73, 95% CI: 0.59-0.91). We subsequently construct a polygenic risk score for oesophageal cancer to explore the influence of genetic factors. Our findings emphasize the importance of breastfeeding, and smoking cessation to prevent oesophageal cancer.

Abstract In situ vaccination (ISV) triggers antitumor immune responses using the patient’s own cancer antigens, yet limited neoantigen release hampers its efficacy. Our novel combination therapy involves low-dose local cisplatin followed by ISV with a TLR7/8/9 agonist formulation (CR108), in which CR108 boosts and sustains the antitumor responses induced by the cisplatin-released neoantigens. In mouse models, the cisplatin+CR108 combination significantly outperformed cisplatin or CR108 alone in abrogating established 4T1 and B16 tumors. The synergistic antitumor effects of cisplatin and CR108 were accompanied by markedly increased tumor tertiary lymphatic structures (TLS) formation, higher levels of type I and III interferons and TNF-α in serum, augmented T and B lymphocyte infiltration, antigen-presenting cell activation, as well as reduced functionally of exhausted T cells. Single-cell sequencing analysis uncovered a potential pathway for TLS to serve as a reservoir for functional antitumor effector T cells. Furthermore, cisplatin+CR108 combo therapy, but neither cisplatin nor CR108 alone, effectively inhibited the growth of treated 4T-1 tumor in an effector T cell-dependent manner. Notably, the combo therapy also suppressed the growth of distant untreated 4T-1 tumors, demonstrating systemic antitumor effects. Moreover, combo-therapy led to full regression of 4T-1 tumors in a large percentage of mice, who became strongly resistant to secondary tumor challenge, a clear indication of antitumor immunological memory. The cisplatin+CR108 combo therapy holds promise in converting “cold” tumors into “hot” ones and eliciting robust antitumor immune responses in vivo.

Abstract Wilson’s disease (WD) typically manifests in children and young adults, with little knowledge of its late-onset forms. In this study, we performed a retrospective cohort study of 105 WD patients (99 index cases, 6 siblings) with an onset age ≥35 years. We compared 99 index late-onset patients with 1237 early-onset patients and analyzed the ATP7B variant penetrance referring to the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD). Sixty-two ATP7B variants were identified in the late-onset patients, among which A874V, V1106I, R919G, and T935M were correlated with late presentation of WD. Regarding gnomAD, V1106I and T935M exhibited significantly low penetrance, and there is a lack of patients carrying a genotype of V1106I/V1106I, R919G/R919G, T935M/T935M, V1106I/T935M, V1106I/R919G, or T935M/R919G. Our data revealed that patients carrying a combination of two late-onset variants may be overlooked due to atypical or lack of WD symptoms, which may provide valuable insights into the genetic basis and diagnosis of WD.

Abstract Carya illinoinensis is an economically important nut tree, and its chloroplast (cp.) genome has been reported; however, its mitochondrial (mt) genome remains unknown. In the present study, we assembled the first mt genome of C. illinoinensis. The circular mt genome of C. illinoinensis is 495,205 bp long, with 37 protein-coding genes(PCGs), 24 tRNA genes, and 3 rRNA genes. All the tRNAs could be folded into typical cloverleaf secondary structures, with lengths of 58–88 bp. A conserved U-U-C-x-A-x2 consensus nucleotide sequence was discovered in the Ψ–loops of tRNA sequences. In addition, 447 dispersed repeats were detected, as well as found 482 RNA editing sites and 9,960 codons in the mt genome. Furthermore, a total of 27 DNA sequences with a length of 43,277 bp were transferred from the cp. to the mt genome, and eight integrated cp-derived genes (trnL-CAA, trnV-GAC, trnD-GUC, trnW-CCA, trnN-GUU, trnH-GUG, trnM-CAU, and rps7) were identified. We also obtained 1,086 hits, including 364.023 kp of nuclear genome sequences, that were transferred to the mt genome. To determine the evolutionary position of C. illinoinensis, we conducted a phylogenetic analysis of the mitogenomes of C. illinoinensis and 14 other taxa. The results strongly suggested that C. illinoinensis and Fagus sylvatica formed a single clade with 100% bootstrap support. This study sequenced comprehensive data on the C. illinoinensis mitochondrial genome and provided insights into the conserved sequences of tRNA genes, which could facilitate evolutionary research in other Carya trees in the future.

Vibration is inevitable in operation of mechanical equipment, but severe vibrations will cause serious harm to wind turbines (WTs). This paper takes the drivetrain of 8 MW WT as the object, established a multi-body electromechanical coupling model of WT and verified the accuracy of the established model through the WT drivetrain in the laboratory. Subsequently, based on this model, time-frequency domain analysis was conducted on the vibration response of the WT drivetrain under different control strategies of the generator, and the influence of the generator control strategy on the vibration of the drivetrain was studied. The result shows that the generator control strategy has a significant impact on the vibration response amplitude of the drivetrain, but has a relatively small impact on the frequency component. Meanwhile, the sliding mode controller designed in this paper has good anti-interference ability, which can make the system quickly reach dynamic stability, and effectively suppress the vibration of the main components in the drivetrain. Under the new controller’s control, the transverse vibration displacement of some parts of the WT drivetrain can be reduced by up to nearly 60 %. This paper provides new ideas and new methods for the active vibration reduction control of WT drivetrain.

Abstract Background Currently, there is a lack of research on multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MDR-PA) isolation in bronchiectasis-related hemoptysis. The aim of this study to analyze the risk factors for recurrent hemoptysis following bronchial artery embolization (BAE) and compare the recurrent hemoptysis-free rates between MDR-PA, non-MDR-PA, and non-PA isolation. Methods A retrospective study was performed of patients diagnosed with idiopathic bronchiectasis-related recurrent hemoptysis who underwent BAE at an university-affiliated hospital. Patients were categorized based on PA susceptibility tests into non-PA, non-MDR-PA, and MDR-PA groups. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression were conducted to identify independent risk factors for recurrent hemoptysis. The Kaplan-Meier curves was conducted to compare recurrent hemoptysis-free rates after BAE for non-PA, non-MDR-PA, and MDR-PA. Results A total of 432 patients were included. 181 (41.90%) patients experienced recurrent hemoptysis during a median follow-up period of 25 months. MDR-PA isolation (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 2.120; 95% confidence interval (CI) [1.249, 3.597], p = 0.005) was identified as an independent risk factor for recurrent hemoptysis. Antibiotic treatment (aHR 0.666; 95% CI [0.476, 0.932], p = 0.018) reduced the risk of recurrent hemoptysis. The cumulative recurrent hemoptysis-free rates for non-PA, non-MDR-PA, and MDR-PA were as follows: at 3 months, 88.96%, 88.24%, and 75.86%, respectively; at 1 year, 73.13%, 69.10%, and 51.72%; and at 3 years, 61.91%, 51.69%, and 41.10% (p = 0.034). Conclusion MDR-PA isolation was an independent risk factor of recurrent hemoptysis post-BAE. Reducing the occurrence of MDR-PA may effectively decrease the recurrence rates of hemoptysis.

Abstract The precise perception of the surrounding environment in traffic scenes is an important part of an intelligent transportation system. The event camera could provide complementary information to traditional frame‐based cameras, such as high dynamic range, and high time resolution, in the perception of traffic targets. To improve the precision and reliability of perception as well as facilitate lots of RGB camera‐based studies introduced to event cameras directly, a refined registration method for event‐based cameras and RGB cameras on the basis of pixel‐level region segmentation is proposed, to provide a fusion method at pixel level. A total of eight sequences and a dataset containing 260 typical traffic scenes are contained in the experiment dataset, both selected from DSEC, a traffic event‐based dataset. The registered event image shows a better spatial consistency with RGB images visually. Compared to the baseline, the evaluation indicators, such as the performance of the contrast, the proportion of overlapping pixels, and average registration accuracy have been improved. In the traffic object segmentation task, the average boundary displacement error of our method has decreased and the max decline value has reached 79.665%, compared to the boundary displacement error between ground truth and baseline. These results indicate prospective applications in the perception of intelligent transportation systems combined with event and RGB cameras. The traffic dataset with pixel‐level semantic annotations will be provided soon.

Mitochondria and lysosomes are critical for neuronal homeostasis, as highlighted by their dysfunction in various neurological diseases. Recent studies have identified dynamic membrane contact sites between mitochondria and lysosomes, independent of mitophagy and the lysosomal degradation of mitochondrial-derived vesicles (MDVs), allowing bidirectional crosstalk between these cell compartments, the dynamic regulation of organelle networks, and substance exchanges. Emerging evidence suggests that abnormalities in mitochondria-lysosome contact sites (MLCSs) contribute to neurological diseases, including Parkinson’s disease, Charcot–Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease, lysosomal storage diseases, and epilepsy. This article reviews recent research advances regarding the tethering processes, regulation, and function of MLCSs and their role in neurological diseases.

Polo-like kinase 1 (PLK1), a key regulator of the G2/M phase in mitosis, is frequently overexpressed in numerous tumors. Although PLK1 inhibitors have emerged as promising therapeutic agents for cancer, their use has been linked to significant anemia in a subset of patients, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, we utilized an in vitro human umbilical cord blood-derived CD34+ cell-based erythroid differentiation system, alongside a murine model, to investigate the impact of PLK1 inhibitors on erythropoiesis. Our results indicate that PLK1 inhibitors, specifically GSK461364 and BI6727, significantly suppress the proliferation of erythroid cells, resulting in G2/M phase cell cycle arrest, increased apoptosis in erythroid cells, and the formation of abnormally nucleated late-stage erythroblasts. In vivo, administration of PLK1 inhibitors in mice induced severe anemia, as evidenced by a marked reduction in red blood cells and hemoglobin levels. More specifically, PLK1 inhibition impaired the differentiation and erythroid commitment of hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow, resulting in abnormal accumulation of BFU-E cells and reduced proliferation and differentiation of CFU-E, and a decrease in the number of terminal erythrocytes. Mechanistically, PLK1 inhibitors primarily induce apoptosis in erythroid cells by reducing Mitochondrial membrane potential and arresting the cell cycle at the G2/M phase. Overall, our findings underscore the critical role of PLK1 in erythropoiesis and shed light on the mechanisms underlying PLK1 inhibitor-induced anemia, providing essential guidance for developing strategies to prevent and manage anemia in clinical applications of PLK1-targeted therapies.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of concurrent aerobic and strength training (CT) in patients with type 2 diabetes and determine the most effective dose of CT. From the inception of the databases to March 2024, we conducted a systematic search of four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library) to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on CT intervention in patients with type 2 diabetes. Two independent authors assessed the risk of bias of the study using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Assessment Tools. Results analyzed included glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG), body mass index, body fat percentage, blood pressure, and VO2max. Pairwise and dose-response meta-analyses using Bayesian hierarchical random-effects modeling were performed to analyze the effects of CT in patients with type 2 diabetes. A total of 1948 participants (935 males) were included in 23 RCTs. The male/female ratio of participants was 52/48; the mean age range was 50–65 years. The results show that CT significantly reduced HbA1c levels (MD=−0.48%, 95% CrI: −0.55 to −0.40), with some heterogeneity among different levels (SD=0.31, 95% CrI: 0.17 to 0.51), and the model converged well. Similarly, FBG levels were also significantly improved (MD=−0.48 mmol/L, 95% CrI: −0.55 to −0.40), with greater heterogeneity (SD=17.73, 95% CrI: 11.23 to 28.09). Additionally, we found a non-linear dose-response relationship between CT and HbA1c levels, with an optimal dose of 1030 METs-min/week (MD=−0.47%, 95% CrI: –0.68 to –0.26, SE=0.11). CT significantly improves several health indicators in patients with type 2 diabetes. A non-linear dose-response relationship was observed between the training dose of CT and HbA1c, and it is recommended that 270 min of moderate-intensity CT or 160 min of vigorous-intensity CT be performed weekly.PROSPERO registration number: CRD42024547119.Keywords: meta-analysis; concurrent aerobic and strength training.

Improvement of cultivated cotton adaptability to extreme climate events under climate change promotes sustainable cotton production. Extreme rainfall leads to a significant decrease in cotton yield, which may be related to changes in soil water consumption (SWC) and the vertical distribution of yield, but relevant research is still scarce. Here, a two-year cotton sowing date experiment was conducted in which geostatistics, sensor technology, the spatial grid method, and principal component analysis were combined to analyze cotton utilization of soil water during extreme rainfall (2021) and normal (2022) years. The reasons for cotton yield reduction under extreme rainfall and strategies to improve cotton production adaptability to extreme rainfall were discussed. Under extreme rainfall, the morphogenesis and reproductive organ development of cotton were inhibited. The accumulation of SWC and its relationship with the biomass accumulation of cotton on different sowing dates under extreme rainfall exhibited nearly opposite characteristics to those in a normal year. Simultaneously, the two-year yield showed the opposite trend with the change in sowing date. There existed a trade-off strategy for the vertical distribution (i.e., on the upper, middle and lower fruiting branches) of cotton yield. Extreme rainfall reduced the yield at lower fruiting branches and increased the boll-forming rate of the upper fruiting branches, which was closely related to seed cotton yield, lint yield and water productivity (WP). Optimizing the cotton sowing date (early sowing should be appropriate in this study) may improve the adaptability of cotton production under extreme rainfall, but further long-term studies are needed. This study highlights the critical practice of climate-smart agriculture and has reference value for the sustainable development of cotton production.

Direct-to-smartphone, as a potential technological means for achieving the integration of space and ground in the future, has received widespread attention from industry and academia.Compared with traditional satellite mobile communication, there are many challenges in the current direct-to-smartphone technology.The current development status and system architecture of two direct-to-smartphone technology routes based on synchronous orbit satellites and asynchronous orbit satellites were introduced, and the technical challenges from the air-interface side, satellite side, network side, and terminal side were summarized.Several solutions were proposed, included satellite-terrestrial synchronization, satellite-borne ultra-large array antenna, and satellite-terrestrial heterogeneous network roaming, providing technical support for the development of direct-to-smartphone technology.Finally, a brief outlook were provided.

Abstract The universal flexoelectric effect in solids provides a mechanical pathway for controlling electric polarization in ultrathin ferroelectrics, eliminating potential material breakdown from a giant electric field at the nanoscale. One challenge of this approach is arbitrary implementation, which is strongly hindered by one-way switching capability. Here, utilizing the innate flexibility of van der Waals materials, we demonstrate that ferroelectric polarization and domain structures can be mechanically, reversibly, and arbitrarily switched in two-dimensional CuInP2S6 via the nano-tip imprinting technique. The bidirectional flexoelectric control is attributed to the extended tip-induced deformation in two-dimensional systems with innate flexibility at the atomic scale. By employing an elastic substrate, artificial ferroelectric nanodomains with lateral sizes as small as ~80 nm are noninvasively generated in an area of 1 μm2, equal to a density of 31.4 Gbit/in2. Our results highlight the potential applications of van der Waals ferroelectrics in data storage and flexoelectronics.

Exotic plant litter presents different chemical and physical properties relative to native plant litter and alters ecosystem processes and functions that may facilitate exotic plant dispersal. However, these effects are largely unknown, especially within wetland ecosystems. This study examines whether introducing litter from the exotic mangrove Laguncularia racemosa could result in (1) accelerated community litter decomposition rates and increased nutrient cycling rates and (2) microbial community structure changes in the invaded areas. A single decomposition experiment using litterbags was conducted to examine the short-term effects of L. racemosa litter in the native mangrove forest ecosystem. The soil nutrients and microbial communities of Rhizophora stylosa, L. racemosa, and mixed forests were also compared to explore the long-term cumulative effects of L. racemosa litter in native ecosystems. The results indicated that L. racemosa has lower-quality leaf litter than R. stylosa and a significantly faster decomposition rate. This may result from changes in the soil microbial community structure caused by L. racemosa leaf litter input, which favors the decomposition of its own litter. Both the short-term and cumulative effect experiments demonstrated that L. racemosa leaf litter significantly increased the relative abundance of microbes related to litter decomposition, such as Proteobacteria and Bdellovibrionota, and enhanced the alpha diversity of soil fungi, thus creating a microbial environment conducive to L. racemosa leaf litter decomposition. Moreover, the accumulation of soil nutrients was lower under L. racemosa than under R. stylosa over several years. This may be related to the more rapid growth of L. racemosa, which causes soil nutrient absorption and storage within the plant tissues, thereby reducing the soil nutrient content. Inputting exotic mangrove L. racemosa leaf litter reduced the soil blue carbon content, potentially adversely affecting global climate change. L. racemosa may employ a unique strategy to lower soil nutrient levels in native mangroves based on its low-quality leaf litter, thereby weakening the competitive ability of native plants that are intolerant to low-nutrient conditions and enhancing its own competitive advantage to further spread into these areas. In summary, the input of exotic L. racemosa leaf litter accelerates nutrient cycling in local mangroves.

Explaining biodiversity is a fundamental issue in ecology. A long-standing puzzle lies in the paradox of the plankton: many species of plankton feeding on a limited variety of resources coexist, apparently flouting the competitive exclusion principle (CEP), which holds that the number of predator (consumer) species cannot exceed that of the resources at a steady state. Here, we present a mechanistic model and demonstrate that intraspecific interference among the consumers enables a plethora of consumer species to coexist at constant population densities with only one or a handful of resource species. This facilitated biodiversity is resistant to stochasticity, either with the stochastic simulation algorithm or individual-based modeling. Our model naturally explains the classical experiments that invalidate the CEP, quantitatively illustrates the universal S-shaped pattern of the rank-abundance curves across a wide range of ecological communities, and can be broadly used to resolve the mystery of biodiversity in many natural ecosystems.

ABSTRACT: Improving immune function is an important indicator for establishing cold adaptation in broilers. In the study, to explore the effects and molecular mechanisms of intermittent and mild cold stimulation (IMCS) on the immune function of broilers, CIRP and TRPM8, induced by cold stimulation, as well as the NF-κB and MAPK pathways which play an important role in immune response, were selected to investigate. A total of 192 one-day-old broilers (Ross 308) were selected and randomly divided into the control group (CC) and the cold stimulation group (CS). The broilers in CC were raised at normal feeding temperature from d 1 to 43, while the broilers in CS were subjected to cold stimulation from day 15 to 35, with a temperature 3 °C below that of the CC group for 5 h, at 1 d intervals. The results showed that IMCS had little effect on the broiler hearts, and the myocardial structure was not damaged. On d 22, IMCS significantly increased the mRNA levels of CIRP, TRPM8, P65, P38, COX-2, TNF-α, IFN- γ, IL-6, IL-10, and the protein levels of CIRP, P65, P38, IL-1β and iNOS in the hearts, and the levels of CIRP and all cytokines in the serum (P ≤ 0.05). The mRNA and protein levels of IκB-α were significantly reduced (P ≤ 0.05). On d 36, the mRNA levels of TRPM8, P65, ERK, and IL-10 in the hearts and the content of COX-2 in the serum in CS were increased significantly (P ≤ 0.05), while the mRNA levels of IκB-α, P38, and IL-1β were decreased significantly (P ≤ 0.05). On d 43, IMCS significantly upregulated the mRNA levels of TRPM8, IFN- γ, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, and the protein levels of IκB-α, P38, and the levels of iNOS, TNF-α, IL6 and IL10 in the serum (P ≤ 0.05); whereas it significantly downregulated CIRP, JNK, P38, iNOS, TNF-α mRNA levels, and CIRP, P65, ERK, JNK, IL1β and iNOS protein levels (P ≤ 0.05). Therefore, IMCS can enhance broiler immune function through co-regulation of CIRP and TRPM8 on the NF-κB and MAPK pathways, which facilitate the cold adaptation in broilers.

Understanding how fault-related structures influence oil and gas accumulation is crucial for geological investigations and exploration planning. This study, based on 3D seismic data, analyzes the northeast-trending strike-slip fault zone in the eastern part of the Bachu Uplift. Automatic fault extraction techniques were employed to delineate the strike-slip fault zone, and the parallel bedding indicator was used to identify reservoirs and investigate the fault’s segmented features and reservoir-controlling characteristics. The results show that the northeast-trending strike-slip fault is primarily governed by simple shear stress and conforms to the Riedel shear model. Three distinct structural styles were developed: vertical, pull-apart, and push-up segments, each exhibiting varying profile characteristics and planar patterns. The segmentation of the strike-slip fault controls the distribution of Ordovician fault-karst reservoirs. An oil and gas enrichment model for the strike-slip fault zone has been established, characterized by external hydrocarbon supply, fault-mediated migration, segmented reservoir control, and high-elevation accumulation. This study offers valuable insights for the exploration of fault-karst reservoirs controlled by strike-slip faults.

Abstract In crowded settings, mobile robots face challenges like target disappearance and occlusion, impacting tracking performance. Despite existing optimisations, tracking in complex environments remains insufficient. To address this issue, the authors propose a tailored visual navigation tracking system for crowded scenes. For target disappearance, an autonomous navigation strategy based on target coordinates, utilising a path memory bank for intelligent search and re‐tracking is introduced. This significantly enhances tracking success. To handle target occlusion, the system relies on appearance features extracted by a target detection network and a feature memory bank for enhanced sensitivity. Servo control technology ensures robust target tracking by fully utilising appearance information and motion characteristics, even in occluded scenarios. Comprehensive testing on the OTB100 dataset validates the system's effectiveness in addressing target tracking challenges in diverse crowded environments, affirming algorithm robustness.

Deficit irrigation is a common strategy to reduce water use and improve the sustainability of cotton production. However, the effects of water deficits on crop productivity and quality are subject to genotype by management by environmental interactions. This study investigated effects of water deficits and frequency of irrigation on cotton performance grown in semi-arid region, Xinjiang, the main cotton-growing area in China. Two field trials (2020 and 2021) with split experimental design, including main factors of three irrigation levels (moderate-deficit, mild-deficit and full-irrigation) and split factors of three irrigation frequencies (4, 8 and 12 days) were conducted. Results from two trials both showed little negative influence of irrigation levels on yield, and higher irrigation frequency improved yield under same irrigation level. Significant effects of irrigation levels on yield components were found in 2021, with a 22 % increase in boll number and an 18 % reduction in boll weight under moderate-deficit irrigation compared with those under full-irrigation. Interactions between irrigation levels and frequencies significantly affected harvest index (HI), showing that reduced irrigation might be beneficial for improving HI. However, decreased fibre length while increased fibre micronaire were found under deficit irrigation. A strong association between radiation use efficiency (RUE) and boll growth rate was observed, suggesting that RUE might be the driving force of yield formation. A tight correlation between both biomass and transpiration efficiency versus delta temperature between air and canopy (ΔTair-canopy) was observed, suggesting ΔTair-canopy could be used as an efficient tool to assess plant production under deficit irrigation. This study provided an improved understanding of the physiological basis of cotton yield formation and further identified a high-throughput and instantaneous method to monitor effects of deficit irrigation on crop productivity.

Abstract With the development of detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope analysis as conventional sedimentological research methods, a large number of studies have been conducted in the Tarim, West Kunlun, Tajik, Pamir and Tianshuihai regions and abundant data have been accumulated. Summarizing these data to characterize sedimentary units and source regions is more important than local studies of specific geological epochs; therefore, we compiled a database of detrital zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotope analyses from the Tarim, West Kunlun, Pamir, Tajik and Tianshuihai terranes. The database contains data from 90 papers, including 35,281 individual U–Pb ages and 4,181 Hf isotope analyses. The database records the literature source, petrologic sample information, regional geological information, geographic coordinates and analytical parameters for each data point in as much detail as possible to allow readers to review, process, analyse and use the data. The database relies on the Deep‐time Digital Earth (DDE) platform and uses an open database update system to enable sharing and collaborative building. We encourage other researchers to contribute relevant published data to facilitate wider use.

Abstract Detrital composition of sandstone is the most important data for siliciclastic studies including sandstone classification, provenance analysis, oil and gas exploration. A large amount of detrital composition data has accumulated over the past decades, however, they are scattered in publications without unified standards. Here we constructed a global dataset of detrital components of sandstones from 646 peer‐reviewed publications using Gazzi‐Dickinson method. A total of 19,861 samples from Precambrian to Quaternary are involved in this dataset. For each sample, we present details on reference information, geographic information, geological background, depositional age and the original data. It is a high‐quality dataset for the information on each sandstone sample from different studies which was standardized. The dataset can be used widely, such as for stratigraphic comparison, provenance analysis, exploring the general laws of the source‐to‐sink process and geological engineering.

Abstract Background Clinical and experimental studies have shown that the myocardial inflammatory response during pathological events varies between males and females. However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms of these sex differences remain elusive. CD73/adenosine axis has been linked to anti-inflammatory responses, but its sex-specific cardioprotective role is unclear. The present study aimed to investigate whether the CD73/adenosine axis elicits sex-dependent cardioprotection during metabolic changes and myocarditis induced by hypobaric hypoxia. Methods For 7 days, male and female mice received daily injections of the CD73 inhibitor adenosine 5′- (α, β-methylene) diphosphate (APCP) 10 mg/kg/day while they were kept under normobaric normoxic and hypobaric hypoxic conditions. We evaluated the effects of hypobaric hypoxia on the CD73/adenosine axis, myocardial hypertrophy, and cardiac electrical activity and function. In addition, metabolic homeostasis and immunoregulation were investigated to clarify the sex-dependent cardioprotection of the CD73/adenosine axis. Results Hypobaric hypoxia-induced cardiac dysfunction and adverse remodeling were more pronounced in male mice. Also, male mice had hyperactivity of the CD73/adenosine axis, which aggravated myocarditis and metabolic shift compared to female mice. In addition, CD73 inhibition triggered prostatic acid phosphatase ectonucleotidase enzymatic activity to sustain adenosine overproduction in male mice but not in female mice. Moreover, dual inhibition prostatic acid phosphatase and CD73 enzymatic activities in male mice moderated adenosine content, alleviating glycolytic shift and proinflammatory response. Conclusion The CD73/adenosine axis confers a sex-dependent cardioprotection. In addition, extracellular adenosine production in the hearts of male mice is influenced by prostatic acid phosphatase and tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase.

Abstract The role of ATP6AP1 in colorectal cancer (CRC) remains elusive despite its observed upregulation in pan-cancer. Therefore, the current study aimed to assess the clinical significance of ATP6AP1 and its relationship with the immune infiltration in CRC. Transcriptome data of CRC were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database and analyzed using the combination of R packages and tumor-related databases, including TIMER2, TISIDB, cBioPortal, and MethSurv. The tissue arrays and immunohistochemical staining were performed to verify the expression and clinical characteristics of ATP6AP1. The results revealed that ATP6AP1 expression was significantly elevated in CRC and associated with poor clinicopathological characteristics and prognosis. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrated ATP6AP1 expression was correlated with the infiltration of immune cells and cancer-associated fibroblasts in the microenvironment of CRC. Moreover, ATP6AP1 was found to be linked to various immune checkpoints and chemokines, with enrichment of cytoplasmic vesicle lumen, endopeptidase regulator activity, and endopeptidase inhibitor activity observed in the high ATP6AP1 expressional group. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that ATP6AP1 upregulation may serve as a biomarker for poor diagnosis in CRC and offer a potential target for immunotherapy in CRC.

Heavy metal pollution has become an increasingly serious environmental issue, making the detection of heavy metals essential for safeguarding public health and the environment. This review aims to highlight the commonly used methods for detecting heavy metals (such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), atomic emission spectroscopy (AES), inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV), etc.), with a particular focus on electrochemical detection and electrode modification materials. Metal nanomaterials (such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), copper oxide (CuO), ZIF-8, MXene, etc.) are emphasized as promising candidates for enhancing the performance of sensors due to their high surface area and excellent catalytic properties. However, challenges such as interference from non-target heavy metal ions and the formation of organometallic complexes with organic compounds can complicate the detection process. To address these issues, two potential solutions have been proposed: the development of advanced algorithms (such as machine learning (ML), back-propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector machines (SVM), random forests (RF), etc.) for signal processing and the use of pretreatment methods (such as Fenton oxidation (FO), ozone oxidation, and photochemical oxidation) to suppress such interferences. This paper aims to review commonly used methods for detecting heavy metals, with a particular emphasis on electrochemical techniques. It will also highlight the challenges faced in these methods, such as interference and sensitivity limitations, and propose innovative solutions, including the use of metal nanomaterials for improved sensor performance and the integration of advanced algorithms and pretreatment techniques to address interference and enhance detection accuracy.

In unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) detection, challenges such as occlusion, complex backgrounds, motion blur, and inference time often lead to false detections and missed detections. General object detection frameworks encounter difficulties in adequately tackling these challenges, leading to substantial information loss during network downsampling, inadequate feature fusion, and being unable to meet real-time requirements. In this paper, we propose a Real-Time Small Object Detection YOLO (RTSOD-YOLO) model to tackle the various challenges faced in UAVs detection. We further enhance the adaptive nature of the Adown module by incorporating an adaptive spatial attention mechanism. This mechanism processes the downsampled feature maps, enabling the model to better focus on key regions. Secondly, to address the issue of insufficient feature fusion, we employ combined serial and parallel triple feature encoding (TFE). This approach fuses scale-sequence features from both shallow features and twice-encoded features, resulting in a new small-scale object detection layer. While enhancing the global context awareness of the existing detection layers, this also enriches the small-scale object detection layer with detailed information. Since rich redundant features often ensure a comprehensive understanding of the input, which is a key characteristic of deep neural networks, we propose a more efficient redundant feature generation module. This module generates more feature maps with fewer parameters. Additionally, we introduce reparameterization techniques to compensate for potential feature loss while further improving the model’s inference speed. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed RTSOD-YOLO achieves superior detection performance, with mAP50/mAP50:95 reaching 97.3%/51.7%, which represents improvement of 3%/3.5% over YOLOv8, and 2.6%/0.1% higher than YOLOv10. Additionally, it has the lowest parameter count and FLOPs, making it highly efficient in terms of computational resources.
