Abstract Climate change is one of the biggest challenges to the world at present. Tomato is also suffered from devastating yield loss due to climate change. The domesticated tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is presumed to be originated from the wild tomato (S. pimpinellifolium). In this study, we compared the climate data of S. pimpinellifollium with the domesticated tomato, predicted the suitable regions of S. pimpinellifollium in China using MaxEnt model and assessed their tolerance to drought stress. We found that the predicted suitable regions of wild tomato are highly consistent with the current cultivated regions of domesticated tomato, suggesting that the habitat demand of domesticated tomato descended largely from its ancestor, hence the habitat information of wild tomato could provide a reference for tomato cultivation. We further predicted suitable regions of wild tomato in the future in China. Finally, we found that while average drought tolerance between wild and domesticated tomato accessions shows no difference, tolerance levels among wild tomato accessions exhibit higher variation, which could be used for future breeding to improve drought resistance. To summarize, our study shows that suitable regions of wild tomato provide insights into domesticated tomato cultivation in China.

The marine carbonates in the Ordovician Majiagou Formation in the Ordos Basin have significant exploration potential. Research has focused on their thermal history and hydrocarbon accumulation stages, as these are essential for guiding the exploration and development of hydrocarbons. In this paper, we study the thermal evolution history of the carbonate reservoirs of the Ordovician Majiagou Formation in the east-central Ordos Basin. Furthermore, petrographic and homogenization temperature studies of fluid inclusions were carried out to further reveal the hydrocarbon accumulation stages. The results demonstrate that the degree of thermal evolution of the Ordovician carbonate reservoirs is predominantly influenced by the deep thermal structure, exhibiting a trend of high to low values from south to north in the central region of the basin. The Fuxian area is located in the center of the Early Cretaceous thermal anomalies, with the maturity degree of the organic matter ranging from 1 to 3.2%, with a maximum value of 3.2%. The present geothermal gradient of the Ordovician Formation exhibits the characteristics of east–high and west–low, with an average of 28.6 °C/km. The average paleo-geotemperature gradient is 54.2 °C/km, the paleoheat flux is 55 mW/m2, and the maximum paleo-geotemperature reaches up to 270 °C. The thermal history recovery indicates that the Ordovician in the central part of the basin underwent three thermal evolution stages: (i) a slow warming stage before the Late Permian; (ii) a rapid warming stage from the end of the Late Permian to the end of the Early Cretaceous; (iii) a cooling stage after the Early Cretaceous, with the hydrocarbon production of hydrocarbon source rocks weakening. In the central part of the basin, the carbonate rock strata of the Majiagou Formation mainly developed asphalt inclusions, natural gas inclusions, and aqueous inclusions. The fluid inclusions can be classified into two stages. The early-stage fluid inclusions are mainly present in dissolution holes. The homogenization temperature is 110–130 °C; this coincides with the hydrocarbon charging period of 210–165 Ma, which corresponds to the end of the Triassic to the end of the Middle Jurassic. The late-stage fluid inclusions are in the dolomite vein or late calcite that filled the gypsum-model pores. The homogenization temperature is 160–170 °C; this coincides with the hydrocarbon charging period of 123–97 Ma, which corresponds to the late Early Cretaceous. Both hydrocarbon charging periods are in the rapid stratigraphic warming stage.

Abstract The three-dimensional shape of a flower is integrated by morphogenesis along different axes. Differentiation along the petal proximodistal axis is tightly linked to the specification of pollinators; however, it is still unclear how a petal patterns this axis. The corolla of Torenia fournieri exhibits strong differentiation along the proximodistal axis, and we previously found a proximal regulator, TfALOG3, controlling corolla neck differentiation. Here, we report another gene, TfBOP2, which is predominantly expressed in the proximal region of the corolla. TfBOP2 mutants have shorter proximal corolla tubes and longer distal lobe, demonstrating its function as a proximal regulator. Arabidopsis BOPs mutant shows similar defects, favouring a shared role of BOPs homologues. Genetic analysis demonstrates the interaction between TfBOP2 and TfALOG3, and we further found that TfALOG3 physically interacts with TfBOP2 and can recruit TfBOP2 to the nuclear region. Our study favours a hypothetical shared BOP-ALOG complex that is recruited to regulate corolla differentiation in the proximal region axis of T. fournieri.

Nanoporous 2D materials have shown promising potential for ion sieving applications due to their physical and chemical properties. Here authors develop a heterogeneous graphene-based polyethylene terephthalate nanochannel with ion sieving ability that is controlled by adjusting the applied voltage.

Structures containing galactose and GalNAc residues are specifically recognized by asialoglycoprotein receptors, allowing them to selectively internalize by hepatocytes for drug-targeting delivery. However, methods for direct synthesis of GalNAc glycosides are still challenging due to the poor participating group of 2-acetamido. Here, we develop a facile strategy to synthesize various GalNAc glycosides by employing a series of rare earth metal triflates, and the results demonstrate that both α-glycosides and β-glycosides of GalNAc can be obtained by conducting with Hf(OTf)4 and Sc(OTf)3, respectively. These applicable results indicate that any interested GalNAc-containing substrates could be prepared by this simple strategy.

Castor is an important non-edible oilseed crop used in the production of high-quality bio-oil. In this process, the leftover tissues rich in cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin are regarded as by-products and remain underutilized. Lignin is a crucial recalcitrance component, and its composition and structure strongly limit the high-value utilization of raw materials, but there is a lack of detailed studies relating to castor lignin chemistry. In this study, lignins were isolated from various parts of the castor plant, namely, stalk, root, leaf, petiole, seed endocarp and epicarp, using the dilute HCl/dioxane method, and the structural features of the as-obtained six lignins were investigated. The analyses indicated that endocarp lignin contained catechyl (C), guaiacyl (G) and syringyl (S) units, with a predominance of C unit [C/(G+S) = 6.9:1], in which the coexisted C-lignin and G/S-lignin could be disassembled completely. The isolated dioxane lignin (DL) from endocarp had a high abundance of benzodioxane linkages (85%) and a low level of β-β linkages (15%). The other lignins were enriched in G and S units with moderate amounts of β-O-4 and β-β linkages, being significantly different from endocarp lignin. Moreover, only p-coumarate (pCA) incorporated into the epicarp lignin was observed, with higher relative content, being rarely reported in previous studies. The catalytic depolymerization of isolated DL generated 1.4–35.6 wt% of aromatic monomers, among which DL from endocarp and epicarp have high yields and excellent selectivity. This work highlights the differences in lignins from various parts of the castor plant, providing a solid theory for the high-value utilization of the whole castor plant.

Platinum (Pt) drugs have developed rapidly in clinical applications because of their broad and highly effective antitumor effects. In recent years, with the rapid development of immunotherapy, Pt-based antitumor agents have gained new challenges and opportunities. Since the discovery of their pharmacological effects in immunotherapy and tumor microenvironment regulation, research into Pt drugs has progressed to multi-ligand and multi-functional Pt precursors and their own shortcomings have been further highlighted. With the development of antitumor immunotherapy and the rise of combination therapy, the development of Pt-based drugs has started to move in the direction of multi-targeting, nanocarrier modification, immunotherapy and photodynamic therapy. In this paper, we first overview the recent applications of Pt-based drugs in antitumor inorganic chemistry, with a focus on summarizing the application of Pt-based drugs and their precursors in the anticancer immune response. The paper also provides a reasonable outlook on the future development of Pt-based drugs from the chemical and immunological perspectives, relying on the existing content and problems of Pt-based drug development. On the basis of the gathered information, joint multidisciplinary programs on implementing comprehensive immune analyses for the future development of novel anticancer metal compounds should be initiated.

Abstract Background The interaction among plants and their pollinators has been a major factor which enriched floral traits known as pollination syndromes and promoted the diversification of flowering plants. One of the bee-pollination syndromes in Faboideae with keel blossoms is the formation of a landing platform by wing and keel petals. However, the molecular mechanisms of elaborating a keel blossom remain unclear. Results By performing large scale mutagenesis, we isolated and characterized a mutant in Vigna radiata, love on wings (low), which shows developmental defects in petal asymmetry and vasculature, leading to a failure in landing platform formation. We cloned the locus through map-based cloning together with RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis. We found that LOW encoded a nucleus-localized Dof-like protein and was expressed in the flower provascular and vascular tissues. A single copy of LOW was detected in legumes, in contrast with other taxa where there seems to be at least 2 copies. Thirty one Dof proteins have been identified from the V. radiata’s genome, which can be further divided into four Major Cluster of Orthologous Groups (MCOGs). We also showed that ectopic expression of LOW in Arabidopsis driven by its native promoter caused changes in petal vasculature pattern. Conclusions To summarize, our study isolated a legume Dof-like factor LOW from V. radiata, which affects vasculature development in this species and this change can, in turn, impact petal development and overall morphology of keel blossom.

Genetics: Leaf architecture gene evolved early in legume plants A legume gene involved in determining the spatial pattern of leaflets seems to have evolved this function earlier than previously thought. Xin Li from Nanjing Agricultural University, China, and coworkers studied a mutant variety of mungbean in which the plant’s leaves display a simple architecture instead of the usual compound arrangement, with several leaflets joined to a single stem. They discovered a mutation in the mungbean version of a gene called LEAFY. This gene, together with others, proved pivotal in compound leaf development in mungbeans. The results run counter to prior data showing that, outside of a small group of related legume species, LEAFY plays only to play a minor role in compound leaf development in these agriculturally important plants. The findings could thus inform breeding efforts in legumes generally.

Floral development: How the plum blossom orchid got its shape A single gene underlies the remarkable differences between the flowers of two varieties of the popular orchid Cymbidium sinense. Orchid flowers are highly specialized, with many unique flower structures. Although the genetics of flower development have been well-studied, they are not as well understood in orchids. Xia Huang at Sun Yat-sen University in China and coworkers studied the genetics underlying differences between a standard C. sinense flower and a flower of the “Ling-Nan-Da-Mei” or plum-blossom variety, in which the tepals (the outer petal-like structures) strongly resemble stamens (which produce pollen). They found that in the “Ling-Nan-Da-Mei” flowers, a gene that controls stamen development is also switched on in the tepals, giving them a more stamen-like shape. Studying how genetic changes affect flower form can illuminate how so many different types of flowers evolved.

Abstract Background ALOG (Arabidopsis LSH1 and Oryza G1) family with a conserved domain widely exists in plants. A handful of ALOG members have been functionally characterized, suggesting their roles as key developmental regulators. However, the evolutionary scenario of this gene family during the diversification of plant species remains largely unclear. Methods Here, we isolated seven ALOG genes from Torenia fournieri and phylogenetically analyzed them with different ALOG members from representative plants in major taxonomic clades. We further examined their gene expression patterns by RT-PCR, and regarding the protein subcellular localization, we co-expressed the candidates with a nuclear marker. Finally, we explored the functional diversification of two ALOG members, TfALOG1 in euALOG1 and TfALOG2 in euALOG4 sub-clades by obtaining the transgenic T. fournieri plants. Results The ALOG gene family can be divided into different lineages, indicating that extensive duplication events occurred within eudicots, grasses and bryophytes, respectively. In T. fournieri, seven TfALOG genes from four sub-clades exhibit distinct expression patterns. TfALOG1–6 YFP-fused proteins were accumulated in the nuclear region, while TfALOG7-YFP was localized both in nuclear and cytoplasm, suggesting potentially functional diversification. In the 35S:TfALOG1 transgenic lines, normal development of petal epidermal cells was disrupted, accompanied with changes in the expression of MIXTA-like genes. In 35S:TfALOG2 transgenic lines, the leaf mesophyll cells development was abnormal, favoring functional differences between the two homologous proteins. Unfortunately, we failed to observe any phenotypical changes in the TfALOG1 knock-out mutants, which might be due to functional redundancy as the case in Arabidopsis. Conclusion Our results unraveled the evolutionary history of ALOG gene family, supporting the idea that changes occurred in the cis regulatory and/or nonconserved coding regions of ALOG genes may result in new functions during the establishment of plant architecture.

In contrast to typical radially symmetrical flowers, zygomorphic flowers, such as those produced by pea (Pisum sativum L.), have bilateral symmetry, manifesting dorsoventral (DV) and organ internal (IN) asymmetry. However, the molecular mechanism controlling IN asymmetry remains largely unclear. Here, we used a comparative mapping approach to clone SYMMETRIC PETALS 1 (SYP1), which encodes a key regulator of floral organ internal asymmetry. Phylogenetic analysis showed that SYP1 is an ortholog of Arabidopsis thaliana LIGHT-DEPENDENT SHORT HYPOCOTYL 3 (LSH3), an ALOG (Arabidopsis LSH1 and Oryza G1) family transcription factor. Genetic analysis and physical interaction assays showed that COCHLEATA (COCH, Arabidopsis BLADE-ON-PETIOLE ortholog), a known regulator of compound leaf and nodule identity in pea, is involved in organ internal asymmetry and interacts with SYP1. COCH and SYP1 had similar expression patterns and COCH and SYP1 target to the nucleus. Furthermore, our results suggested that COCH represses the 26S proteasome-mediated degradation of SYP1 and regulates its abundance. Our study suggested that the COCH-SYP1 module plays a pivotal role in floral organ internal asymmetry development in legumes.

Pea (Pisum sativum L.) is a model plant that has been used in classical genetics and organ development studies. However, its large and complex genome has hindered research investigations in pea. Here, we generated transcriptomes from different tissues or organs of three pea accessions using next-generation sequencing to assess single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and further investigated petal differentially expressed genes to elucidate the mechanisms regulating floral zygomorphy. Eighteen samples were sequenced, which yielded a total of 617 million clean reads, and de novo assembly resulted in 87,137 unigenes. A total of 9044 high-quality SNPs were obtained among the three accessions, and a consensus map was constructed. We further discovered several dorsoventral asymmetrically expressed genes that were confirmed by qRT-PCR among different petals, including previously reported three CYC-like proliferating cell factor (TCP) genes. One MADS-box gene was highly expressed in dorsal petals, and several MYB factors were predominantly expressed among dorsal, lateral, and/or ventral petals, together with a ventrally expressed TCP gene. In sum, our comprehensive database complements the existing resources for comparative genetic mapping and facilitates future investigations in legume zygomorphic flower development.

Abstract Background Accumulating studies have highlighted the significant role of circulating metabolomics in the etiology of reproductive system disorders. However, the causal effects between genetically determined metabolites (GDMs) and reproductive diseases, including primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and abnormal spermatozoa (AS), still await thorough clarification. Methods With the currently most comprehensive genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data of metabolomics, systematic two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were conducted to disclose causal associations between 1,091 blood metabolites and 309 metabolite ratios with reproductive disorders. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method served as the primary analysis approach, and multiple effective MR methods were employed as complementary analyses including MR-Egger, weighted median, constrained maximum likelihood (cML-MA), contamination mixture method, robust adjusted profile score (MR-RAPS), and debiased inverse-variance weighted method. Heterogeneity and pleiotropy were assessed via MR-Egger intercept and Cochran’s Q statistical analysis. Outliers were detected by Radial MR and MR-PRESSO methods. External replication and metabolic pathway analysis were also conducted. Results Potential causal associations of 63 GDMs with POI were unearthed, and five metabolites with strong causal links to POI were emphasized. Two metabolic pathways related to the pathogenesis of POI were pinpointed. Suggestive causal effects of 70 GDMs on PCOS were detected, among which 7 metabolites stood out for strong causality with elevated PCOS risk. Four metabolic pathways associated with PCOS mechanisms were recognized. For AS, 64 GDMs as potential predictive biomarkers were identified, particularly highlighting two metabolites for their strong causal connections with AS. Three pathways underneath the AS mechanism were identified. Multiple assessments were conducted to further confirm the reliability and robustness of our causal inferences. Conclusion By extensively assessing the causal implications of circulating GDMs on reproductive system disorders, our study underscores the intricate and pivotal role of metabolomics in reproductive ill-health, laying a theoretical foundation for clinical strategies from metabolic insights.

Three types of TiB2-HEA ceramic composite were prepared using a non-equimolar ratio CoCrFeNiW0.2 high entropy alloy (HEA) as a binder, mechanical alloying (MA), and 1600 °C pressureless sintering (PS) processes. The phase analysis results indicate the presence of TiB2, FCC, and TCP phases in the TiB2-HEA composite. A detailed study was conducted on the microstructure of TiB2-HEA composite. The results indicate that there is a certain solid solubility between TiB2 and HEA. The Ti and B elements in TiB2 will enter HEA, and the elements in HEA will also enter TiB2. Along with the discovery of many lattice distortion regions in TiB2, a diffraction pattern of P-43m cubic structure was also observed in HEA. HEA has good wettability with TiB2, so it can not only inhibit the grain growth of TiB2, but also improve the performance of TiB2-HEA composite by utilizing the inherent excellent properties of HEA. There are both intergranular and transgranular fractures in the TiB2-HEA composite. The relative density, flexural strength, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, and electrical resistivity of TiB2-30 wt%HEA are 99.7%, 680 MPa, 18.6 GPa, 6.4 MPa m1/2, and 5.7 × 10−7 Ω m, respectively.

Abstract Facile evaluation of formation kinetics of key intermediate is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of electrochemical ammonia oxidation reaction (AOR) mechanisms and the design of efficient electrocatalysts. Currently, elucidating the formation kinetics of key intermediate associated with rate‐determining step is still challenging. Herein, 4‐phtalamide‐N‐(4′‐methylcoumarin) naphthalimide (CF) is developed as a molecular probe to detect N2H4 intermediate during AOR via electrochemiluminescence (ECL) and further investigated the formation kinetics of N2H4 on Pt catalysts with different crystal planes. CF probe can selectively react with N2H4 to release ECL substance luminol. Thus, N2H4 intermediate as a key intermediate can be sensitively and selectively detected by ECL during AOR. For the first time, Pt(100) facet is discovered to exhibit faster N2H4 formation kinetics than Pt(111) facet, which is further confirmed by Density functional theory calculation and the finite element simulation. The AOR mechanism under the framework of Gerischer and Mauerer is further validated by examining N2H4 formation kinetics during the dimerization process (NH2 coupling). The developed ECL active probe and the discovered facet‐dependent formation kinetics of key intermediates provide a promising new tool and strategy for the understanding of electrochemical AOR mechanisms and the design of efficient electrocatalysts.

Traditionally, radio frequency detection or ambient spectrum sensing has required high-performance spectrum analyzers and RF signal analyzers, leading to relatively high costs due to the need for a local oscillator and signal mixer. To overcome this challenge, we propose a low-cost, substantially simplified solution utilizing a stretchable rectenna, a microcontroller unit (MCU), and feedback control systems. By exploiting the dynamic correlation between the resonant frequency and the tensile ratio of the stretchable antenna, the incoming frequency can be determined by recording the maximum rectifier DC power output as a function of the electromechanically controlled tension ratio of the stretchable antenna. Our measured results indicate that a frequency measurement range of 1.8 GHz to 2.5 GHz can be achieved through careful design of the stretchable antenna and broadband rectifier. We have experimentally demonstrated an over-the-air far-field frequency sensing system based on this concept, showcasing significant advantages in power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity when compared to state-of-the-art RF spectrum analyzers.

BackgroundPrimary ovarian insufficiency (POI) is a common clinical endocrine disorder with a high heterogeneity in both endocrine hormones and etiological phenotypes. However, the etiology of POI remains unclear. Herein, we unraveled the causality of genetically determined metabolites (GDMs) on POI through Mendelian randomization (MR) study with the overarching goal of disclosing underlying mechanisms.MethodsGenetic links with 486 metabolites were retrieved from GWAS data of 7824 European participants as exposures, while GWAS data concerning POI were utilized as the outcome. Via MR analysis, we selected inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method for primary analysis and several additional MR methods (MR-Egger, weighted median, and MR-PRESSO) for sensitivity analyses. MR-Egger intercept and Cochran’s Q statistical analysis were conducted to assess potential heterogeneity and pleiotropy. In addition, genetic variations in the key target metabolite were scrutinized further. We conducted replication, meta-analysis, and linkage disequilibrium score regression (LDSC) to reinforce our findings. The MR Steiger test and reverse MR analysis were utilized to assess the robustness of genetic directionality. Furthermore, to deeply explore causality, we performed colocalization analysis and metabolic pathway analysis.ResultsVia IVW methods, our study identified 33 metabolites that might exert a causal effect on POI development. X-11437 showed a robustly significant relationship with POI in four MR analysis methods (PIVW=0.0119; Pweighted-median =0.0145; PMR-Egger =0.0499; PMR-PRESSO =0.0248). Among the identified metabolites, N-acetylalanine emerged as the most significant in the primary MR analysis using IVW method, reinforcing its pivotal status as a serum biomarker indicative of an elevated POI risk with the most notable P-value (PIVW=0.0007; PMR-PRESSO =0.0022). Multiple analyses were implemented to further demonstrate the reliability and stability of our deduction of causality. Reverse MR analysis did not provide evidence for the causal effects of POI on 33 metabolites. Colocalization analysis revealed that some causal associations between metabolites and POI might be driven by shared genetic variants.ConclusionBy incorporating genomics with metabolomics, this study sought to offer a comprehensive analysis in causal impact of serum metabolome phenotypes on risks of POI with implications for underlying mechanisms, disease screening and prevention.

Abstract Biological macromolecules exhibit emergent functions through hierarchical self‐assembly, a concept that is extended to design artificial supramolecular assemblies. Here, the first example of breaking the common parallel arrangement of capsule‐shaped zirconium coordination cages is reported by constructing the hierarchical porous framework ZrR‐1. ZrR‐1 adopts a quaternary structure resembling protein and contains 12‐connected chloride clusters, representing the highest connectivity for zirconium‐based cages reported thus far. Compared to the parallel framework ZrR‐2, ZrR‐1 demonstrated enhanced stability in acidic aqueous solutions and a tenfold increase in BET surface area (879 m2 g−1). ZrR‐1 also exhibits excellent proton conductivity, reaching 1.31 × 10−2 S·cm−1 at 353 K and 98% relative humidity, with a low activation energy of 0.143 eV. This finding provides insights into controlling the hierarchical self‐assembly of metal–organic cages to discover superstructures with emergent properties.
