Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer mortality worldwide, and cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play a major role in the tumor microenvironment (TME), which facilitates the progression of CRC. It is critical to understand how CAFs promote the progression of CRC for the development of novel therapeutic approaches. The purpose of this study was to understand how CAF-derived stromal-derived factor-1 (SDF-1) and its interactions with the corresponding C-X-C motif chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) promote CRC progression. Our study focused on their roles in promoting tumor cell migration and invasion and their effects on the characteristics of cancer stem cells (CSCs), which ultimately impact patient outcomes. Here, using in vivo approaches and clinical histological samples, we analyzed the influence of secreted SDF-1 on CRC progression, especially in terms of tumor cell behavior and stemness. We demonstrated that CAF-secreted SDF-1 significantly enhanced CRC cell migration and invasion through paracrine signaling. In addition, the overexpression of SDF-1 in CRC cell lines HT29 and HCT-116 triggered these cells to generate autocrine SDF-1 signaling, which further enhanced their CSC characteristics, including those of migration, invasion, and spheroid formation. An immunohistochemical study showed a close relationship between SDF-1 and CXCR4 expression in CRC tissue, and this significantly affected patient outcomes. The administration of AMD3100, an inhibitor of CXCR4, reversed the entire phenomenon. Our results strongly suggest that targeting this signaling axis in CRC is a feasible approach to attenuating tumor progression, and it may, therefore, serve as an alternative treatment method to improve the prognosis of patients with CRC, especially those with advanced, recurrent, or metastatic CRC following standard therapy.

Pulmonary adenocarcinoma (PADC) treatment limited efficacy in preventing tumor progression, often resulting in malignant pleural effusion (MPE). MPE is filled with various mediators, especially interleukin-8 (IL-8). However, the role of IL-8 and its signaling mechanism within the fluid microenvironment (FME) implicated in tumor progression warrants further investigation. Primary cultured cells from samples of patients with MPE from PADC, along with a commonly utilized lung cancer cell line, were employed to examine the role of IL-8 and its receptor, CXCR1, through comparative analysis. Our study primarily assessed migration and invasion capabilities, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and cancer stem cell (CSC) properties. Additionally, IL-8 levels in MPE fluid versus serum, along with immunohistochemical expression of IL-8/CXCR1 signaling in tumor tissue and cell blocks were analyzed. IL-8/CXCR1 overexpression enhanced EMT and CSC properties. Furthermore, the immunocytochemical examination of 17 cell blocks from patients with PADC and MPE corroborated the significant correlation between upregulated IL-8 and CXCR1 expression and the co-expression of IL-8 and CXCR1 in MPE with distant metastasis. In summary, the IL-8/ CXCR1 axis in FME is pivotal to tumor promotion via paracrine and autocrine signaling. Our study provides a therapeutic avenue for improving the prognosis of PADC patients with MPE.

Abstract Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures—in which layered materials are purposely selected to assemble with each other—allow unusual properties and different phenomena to be combined and multifunctional electronics to be created, opening a new chapter for the spread of internet‐of‐things applications. Here, an O2‐ultrasensitive MoTe2 material and an O2‐insensitive SnS2 material are integrated to form a vdW heterostructure, allowing the realization of charge‐polarity control for multioperation‐mode transistors through a simple and effective rapid thermal annealing strategy under dry‐air and vacuum conditions. The charge‐polarity control (i.e., doping and de‐doping processes), which arises owing to the interaction between O2 adsorption/desorption and tellurium defects at the MoTe2 surface, means that the MoTe2/SnS2 heterostructure transistors can reversibly change between unipolar, ambipolar, and anti‐ambipolar transfer characteristics. Based on the dynamic control of the charge‐polarity properties, an inverter, output polarity controllable amplifier, p‐n diode, and ternary‐state logics (NMIN and NMAX gates) are demonstrated, which inspire the development of reversibly multifunctional devices and indicates the potential of 2D materials.

Here, the authors present a native oxidation-inspired InSe field-effect transistor that benefits from a boosted charge trapping behavior under ambient conditions.

Based on the vibration control method and energy harvesting principle in the bridge field, this paper proposes a distributed vibration reduction and energy harvesting method for bridges. Firstly, the analytical solutions of the induced electromotive force, output power and magnetic damping generated by a coil in a magnetic field were deduced through an electromagnetic theory analysis. In addition, the structural vibration equation under the magnetic damping was deduced. Then, a new method of joint simulation and modeling analysis of vibration and energy output was proposed. Finally, the structural vibration reduction and energy output power were analyzed and calculated. The main research results are as follows: by calculating the instantaneous power of the energy collection of the designed circuit, the average instantaneous power collected by the design method is 1.093 × 10−9 W; the initial vibration signal of the target node is obtained through analysis, and the vibration signal of the node before and after applying the electromagnetic damping force is transformed. For the energy analysis, the energy of the acceleration curve before and after the node was calculated to be 3.1048 × 108 and 3.1044 × 108, respectively, and the reduction rate of the node vibration energy was 0.01% and 0.02%, respectively. Thus, the feasibility and vibration reduction effect of the designed bridge distributed vibration reduction and energy harvesting method is verified when the electromagnetic damping force is small. This method can provide new ideas for bridge structure vibration reduction and energy harvesting research and is of great significance to the infrastructure construction and utilization of renewable energy.

Although videos are now used pervasively in English as a Foreign Language settings, most existing literature centers on learners as knowledge receivers or passive video viewers (Lialikhova, 2014; Fisher & Frey, 2015; Bakar et al., 2019). Rarely do studies involving videos engaged learners as knowledge generators or active, self-directed learners. To fill this research gap, the current study examined the effects of the online-video pronunciation dictionary YouGlish, which employs a lexical approach on learners’ speaking skills, including pronunciation, intonation, word usage, and strategies that learners applied while using YouGlish as well as their reactions to it. The results revealed that YouGlish can help learners make progress in their oral skills, especially in terms of word usage, by providing meaningful context that helps them comprehend how oral English is used in real life. The findings revealed the process of using YouGlish generated students to become more active and self-directed learners, rather than remained as passive receivers of knowledge.

Specification tests for thin surface treatment are mainly simulated or empirical; without considering fundamental mechanical or rheological properties of the material. Thus, it is difficult to incorporate the test results into mechanical-based pavement design analysis. A series of test methods, which quantify performance-related mechanical properties of thin surface treatment employed in pavement maintenance and pavement preservation is thus needed. The objective of this study is to investigate the performance-related mechanical properties of thin surface treatment materials for pavement maintenance and preservation. The Micro-Surfacing Mat and Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat were used in this study. The Finite Element Model result indicated that the Modified Leutner Shear Test adequate to evaluate the direct shear strength of the thin surface treatment. The results show that the sensitivity loading frequency and the temperature susceptibility of the Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat were reduced by Rubber Modified Asphalt content. The Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat has greater interfacial shear strength as well as shear stiffness compared to those of Micro-Surfacing Mat. The tack coat application rate is crucial for the interfacial shear strength of Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat. This research found that shear stress and the displacement rate are positively related to the interfacial shear strength and shear stiffness. The interfacial shear strength and shear stiffness are negatively related to testing temperature. The Micro-Surfacing Mat had higher dynamic direct shear modulus, lower loading frequency sensitivity, and better rutting resistance than Precast Rubber Asphalt Mat.

Abstract Background Stroke is a major risk factor for osteoporosis and fractures. No study has evaluated the association between diuretic use and risk of vertebral fracture in stroke patients, although a considerable proportion of stroke patients are prescribed diuretics for hypertension. Our study aimed to investigate whether treatment with thiazides or loop diuretics affects the risk of vertebral fracture after stroke. Methods A population-based propensity score-matched retrospective cohort study was conducted using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database. Patients with a new diagnosis of stroke between 2000 and 2011 were included. After propensity score matching, 9468 patients were included in the analysis of the effect of thiazides, of who 4734 received thiazides within 2 years after stroke. To analyze the loop diuretic effect, 4728 patients were included, of who 2364 received loop diuretics. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate hazard ratios (HRs) of vertebral fractures among patients according to thiazide or loop diuretic use within 2 years following stroke. Sensitivity analyses based on the duration of thiazide or loop diuretic use were further conducted. Results There was no significant difference in vertebral fracture risk between thiazide users and non-users (adjusted HR [aHR] = 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.88–1.47, p = 0.316). Loop diuretic users had a significantly higher vertebral fracture risk than non-users (aHR = 1.45, 95% CI = 1.06–1.98, p = 0.019). Purpose: To validate a conceptual short-form health literacy 12 items questionnaire (HL-SF12) in patient populations. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted via a convenient sample of 403 patients from three departments of a community general hospital in the northern Taiwan. Patients’ health literacy was assessed with a validated HL-SF12, derived from the full scale, the European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire (HLS-EU-Q), as well as a single-item from Chew’s Set of Brief Health Literacy Question. A reference population in Northern Taiwan (n=928) via the HLS-EU-Q in 2013–2014 was used as a reference to compare the health literacy between that of the general public and the patients. Data was analyzed by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), internal consistency analysis, correlation analysis, and linear regression models. Results: Patients’ health literacy assessed with the HL-SF12 was shown with high internal consistency (Cronbach α=.87), and moderately correlated with the single-item from Chew's Set of Brief Health Literacy Question, with satisfactory item-scale convergent validity (item-scale correlation ≥ .40), without floor/ceiling effect, and with satisfactory goodness of fit indices of the three-factor construct model for most of the patients. Their health literacy was significantly positively associated with female gender, higher income, and more often watching health-related TV programs. On the other hands, patients were reported with significantly higher healthcare health literacy than the general public, but not in general health literacy, disease prevention health literacy, or health promotion health literacy. Conclusion: The comprehensive HL-SF12 was a valid and easy to use tool for assessing patients’ health literacy in the hospitals to facilitate healthcare providers in enhancing patients’ health literacy and healthcare qualities.

Long-term nicotine-derived nitrosamine ketone (NNK) and arecoline exposure promotes carcinogenesis and head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) progression, although most associated data on the two were analyzed individually. The molecular mechanisms underlying tumor progression associated with the synergistic effects of NNK and arecoline remain unclear. We treated SCC-25 and FaDu cells with NNK and arecoline (separately or in combination) for 3 months. Comparative analysis was performed to investigate the mechanism underlying the acquisition of properties related to tumor promotion, including stemness, anti-apoptosis, and resistance to HNSCC therapeutics. Long-term exposure to NNK and arecoline resulted in an increase in cancer stem cell properties, anti-apoptosis, and the resistance to cisplatin in HNSCC. We detected abundant epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) expression in HNSCC cells after combined treatment with NNK and arecoline. EGFR was pivotal in inducing tumor promotion and anti-apoptosis in cancer cells by inducing pAKT and NFκB. Combined treatment with NNK and arecoline synergistically facilitated tumor aggressiveness via EGFR-AKT signaling. Targeting EGFR-AKT signaling may be a feasible strategy for treating HNSCC.

Guided by the framework of internationalization at home (IaH), this study employed a mixed-methods approach investigating the development of intercultural communicative competence (ICC) among a group of tertiary English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Taiwan, facilitated through the means of telecollaboration. The telecollaboration incorporated 30 EFL learners and 30 learners of Chinese from Australia and New Zealand. Data collection encompassed EFL learners' responses to a self-assessment questionnaire, their reflective essays, alongside instructors' reflective journals. The findings showed that EFL learners held positive perceptions regarding their telecollaboration experience and reported substantial growth in ICC across three dimensions: cognitive, affective and behavioral. In applying various multimodal communication strategies, EFL learners realized and valued cultural similarities and differences. Their reflective accounts exhibited evidence of enhanced linguistic and cultural competences. The telecollaboration enabled them to increase their confidence in utilizing English, hone their digital literacy skills for effective communications, and establish conducive environments for their relational and emotional development with their teammates and instructors. The latter provided indispensable emotion in varying contingent situations. Incorporating the insights drawn from the instructors' reflective journals, the study argues that telecollaboration as a pedagogical practice is the significant essence of effective IaH curriculum design and implementation.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a global pandemic metabolic disorder. In recent years, the amount of medical resources required for the treatment of diabetes has increased as diabetes rates have gradually risen. The combined effects of individual and neighbourhood socio-economic status (SES) on DM survival rates are still not clear, especially in patients of working age. In this paper, we aim to analyze the combined effects of neighbourhood and individual SES on DM survival rates in patients of working age in Taiwan.The study of 23,781 people who were diagnosed with DM by using population-based study between 2002 and 2006. Each sample was followed up for 4 years or as a sensor case. We defined Individual SES and neighbourhood SES by each patient's job category and household income which characterized as advantaged or disadvantaged. Then we compared the survival rates by SES group used Cox proportional hazards model for adjust risk factors.The 4-year overall survival rates of diabetic patients were worst for those with low individual SES who living in advantaged neighbourhoods. After adjustment for patient characteristics, DM patients with high individual SES living in disadvantaged neighbourhoods had the same risk of mortality as those patients with high individual SES living in advantaged neighbourhoods (hazard ratio: 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.81-1.51). The study found that DM patients with low individual SES who live in disadvantaged areas had a greater risk of mortality than those with high SES (odds ratio: 2.57; 95% CI: 2.04-3.24). There were significant differences in survival rates between patients with high individual SES and patients with low individual SES. In contrast, the results did not statistically significant differences in survival rates between advantaged and disadvantaged neighbourhood SES groups.DM patients with low individual SES had the worst survival rate, regardless of whether they were living in a high or low SES neighbourhood area. The competitive cause of death, i.e., the fact that complications, rather than DM itself, are often the cause of death, may be the reason for the inverse relationship found between the effects of individual SES and neighbourhood SES on DM survival. We conclude that the socio-economic gradient in survival among DM patients may be the result of differences in access to medical treatment and attributes related to individual SES.

Circadian rhythms are intrinsic rhythms that are coordinated with the rotation of the Earth and are also generated by a set of circadian-clock genes at the intracellular level. Growing evidence suggests a strong link between circadian rhythms and energy metabolism; however, the fundamental mechanisms remain unclear. In the present study, neonatal streptozotocin (STZ)-treated mice were used to model the molecular and physiological progress from insulin resistance to diabetes. Two-day-old male C57BL/6 mice received a single injection of STZ and were tested for non-obese, hyperglycemic and hyperinsulinemic conditions in the early stage, insulin resistance in the middle stage, and diabetes in the late stage. Gene expression levels of the hepatic circadian-clock system were examined by real-time quantitative PCR. Most of the components of the hepatic circadian-clock gene expression system, such as the mRNAs of Bmal1 (brain and muscle Arnt-like protein-1), Per2 (period 2) and Cry1 (cryptochrome 1), were elevated, and circadian patterns were retained in the early and middle stages of insulin-resistant conditions. The insulin sensitizer, rosiglitazone, returns the physiological and molecular changes associated with the diabetic phenotype to normal levels through peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) rather than PPARα. Early and chronic treatment with rosiglitazone has been shown to be effective to counter the diabetic condition. Over time, this effect acts to attenuate the increased gene expression levels of the hepatic circadian-clock system and delay the severity of diabetic conditions. Together, these results support an essential role for the hepatic circadian-clock system in the coordinated regulation and/or response of metabolic pathways.
