1. GRB Redshift Classifier to Follow up High-redshift GRBs Using Supervised Machine Learning

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are intense, short-lived bursts of gamma-ray radiation observed up to a high redshift ( z ∼ 10) due to their luminosities. Thus, they can serve as cosmological tools to probe the early Universe. However, we need a large sample of high- z GRBs, currently limited due to the difficulty in securing time at the large aperture telescopes. Thus, it is painstaking to determine quickly whether a GRB is high- z or low- z , which hampers the possibility of performing rapid follow-up observations. Previous efforts to distinguish between high- and low- z GRBs using GRB properties and machine learning (ML) have resulted in limited sensitivity. In this study, we aim to improve this classification by employing an ensemble ML method on 251 GRBs with measured redshifts and plateaus observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. Incorporating the plateau phase with the prompt emission, we have employed an ensemble of classification methods to unprecedentedly enhance the sensitivity. Additionally, we investigate the effectiveness of various classification methods using different redshift thresholds, z _threshold = z _t at z _t = 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5. We achieve a sensitivity of 87% and 89% with a balanced sampling for both z _t = 3.0 and z _t = 3.5, respectively, representing a 9% and 11% increase in the sensitivity over random forest used alone. Overall, the best results are at z _t = 3.5, where the difference between the sensitivity of the training set and the test set is the smallest. This enhancement of the proposed method paves the way for new and intriguing follow-up observations of high- z GRBs.

2. Probing Shocked Ejecta in SN 1987A: A Novel Diagnostic Approach Using XRISM-Resolve

Abstract

Supernova (SN) 1987A is one of the best candidates to exploit the capabilities of the freshly launched XRISM satellite. This celestial object offers the unique opportunity to study the evolution of an SN into a young supernova remnant. To date, the X-ray emission has been dominated by the shocked circumstellar medium, with no shocked ejecta firmly detected. However, recent studies provide compelling evidence that in the forthcoming years, the X-ray emission from SN 1987A will increasingly stem from the ejecta. Our aim is to assess the proficiency of the XRISM-Resolve high-resolution spectrometer in pinpointing signatures of the shocked ejecta in SN 1987A. Taking advantage of a self-consistent state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamic simulation that describes the evolution from SN 1987A to its remnant, we synthesized the XRISM-Resolve spectrum of SN 1987A, as it would be collected in the allocated observation during the performance verification phase, which is foreseen for 2024. Our predictions clearly show the leading role of shocked ejecta in shaping the profile of the emission lines. The Doppler broadening associated with the bulk motion along the line of sight of the rapidly expanding ejecta is shown to increase the line widths well above the values observed so far. The quantitative comparison between our synthetic spectra and the XRISM spectra will enable us to establish a strong connection between the broadened line emission and the freshly shocked ejecta. This, in turn, will allow us to retrieve the ejecta dynamics and chemical composition from the X-ray emission.

3. Numerical Simulation of Photospheric Emission in Long Gamma-Ray Bursts: Prompt Correlations, Spectral Shapes, and Polarizations

Abstract

We explore the properties of photospheric emission in the context of long gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) using three numerical models that combine relativistic hydrodynamical simulations and Monte Carlo radiation transfer calculations in three dimensions. Our simulations confirm that photospheric emission gives rise to correlations between the spectral peak energy and luminosity that agree with the observed Yonetoku, Amati, and Golenetskii correlations. It is also shown that the spectral peak energy and luminosity correlate with the bulk Lorentz factor, as indicated in the literature. On the other hand, synthetic spectral shapes tend to be narrower than those of the observations. This result indicates that an additional physical process that can provide nonthermal broadening is needed to reproduce the spectral features. Furthermore, the polarization analysis finds that, while the degree of polarization is low for the emission from the jet core (Π < 4%), it tends to increase with viewing angle outside of the core and can be as high as Π ∼ 20%–40% in an extreme case. This suggests that the typical GRBs show systematically low polarization compared to softer, dimmer counterparts (X-ray-rich GRBs and X-ray flashes). Interestingly, our simulations indicate that photospheric emission exhibits large temporal variation in the polarization position angle (Δ ψ ∼ 90°), which may be compatible with those inferred in observations. A notable energy dependence of the polarization property is another characteristic feature found in the current study. Particularly, the difference in the position angle among different energy bands can be as large as ∼90°.

Abstract

To investigate the impact of matter mixing on the formation of molecules in the ejecta of SN 1987A, time-dependent rate equations for chemical reactions are solved for one-zone and one-dimensional (1D) ejecta models of SN 1987A. The latter models are based on the 1D profiles obtained by angle-averaging of the three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamical models, which effectively reflect the 3D matter mixing; the impact is demonstrated, for the first time, based on 3D hydrodynamical models. The distributions of initial seed atoms and radioactive ^56 Ni influenced by the mixing could affect the formation of molecules. By comparing the calculations for spherical cases and for several specified directions in the bipolar-like explosions in the 3D hydrodynamical models, the impact is discussed. The decay of ^56 Ni, practically ^56 Co at later phases, could heat the gas and delay the molecule formation. Additionally, Compton electrons produced by the decay could ionize atoms and molecules and could destroy molecules. Several chemical reactions involved with ions such as H ^+ and He ^+ could also destroy molecules. The mixing of ^56 Ni plays a nonnegligible role in both the formation and destruction of molecules through the processes above. The destructive processes of carbon monoxide and silicon monoxide due to the decay of ^56 Ni generally reduce the amounts. However, if the molecule formation is sufficiently delayed under a certain condition, the decay of ^56 Ni could locally increase the amounts through a sequence of reactions.

Abstract

Cosmological models and their parameters are widely debated because of theoretical and observational mismatches of the standard cosmological model, especially the current discrepancy between the value of the Hubble constant, H _0 , obtained by Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia), and the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB). Thus, considering high-redshift probes like quasars (QSOs), having intermediate redshifts between SNe Ia and CMB, is a necessary step. In this work, we use SNe Ia and the most updated QSO sample, reaching redshifts up to z ∼ 7.5, applying the Risaliti–Lusso QSO relation based on a nonlinear relation between ultraviolet and X-ray luminosities. We consider this relation both in its original form and corrected for selection biases and evolution in redshift through a reliable statistical method also accounting for the circularity problem. We also explore two approaches: with and without calibration on SNe Ia. We then investigate flat and nonflat standard cosmological models and a flat w CDM model, with a constant dark energy equation-of-state parameter w . Remarkably, when correcting for the evolution as a function of cosmology, we obtain closed constraints on Ω _M using only noncalibrated QSOs. We find that considering noncalibrated QSOs combined with SNe Ia and accounting for the same correction, our results are compatible with a flat ΛCDM model with Ω _M = 0.3 and H _0 = 70 km s ^−1 Mpc ^−1 . Intriguingly, the H _0 values obtained are placed halfway between the one from SNe Ia and CMB, paving the way for new insights into the H _0 tension.

Abstract

Neutrino interactions with stellar material are widely believed to be fundamental to the explosion of massive stars. However, this important process has remained difficult to confirm observationally. We propose a new method to verify it using X-ray observations of the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The elemental composition in its Fe-rich ejecta that could have been produced at the innermost region of the supernova, where neutrinos are expected to interact, allows us to examine the presence of neutrino interactions. Here we demonstrate that the amount of Mn produced without neutrino nucleosynthesis processes (i.e., the ν - and νp -processes) is too small to explain the Mn/Fe mass ratio we measure (0.14%–0.67%). This result supports the operation of significant neutrino interactions in the Cassiopeia A supernova. If the observed Mn/Fe mass ratio purely reflects the production at the innermost region of the supernova, this would be the first robust confirmation of neutrino–matter interactions in an individual supernova. We further show that the Mn/Fe mass ratio has the potential to constrain supernova neutrino parameters (i.e., total neutrino luminosity, neutrino temperature). Future spatially resolved, high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy will allow us to investigate the details of neutrino–supernova astrophysics through its signatures in elemental composition not only in Cassiopeia A but also in other remnants.

7. Investigating the Time Evolution of the Thermal Emission from the Putative Neutron Star in SN 1987A for 50+ Years

Abstract

Observations collected with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) and analysis of broadband X-ray spectra have recently suggested the presence of a central compact object (CCO) in SN 1987A. However, no direct evidence of the CCO has been found yet. Here we analyze Chandra X-ray observations of SN 1987A collected in 2007 and 2018, and synthesize 2027 Chandra and 2037 Lynx spectra of the faint inner region of SN 1987A. We estimate the temporal evolution of the upper limits of the intrinsic luminosity of the putative CCO in three epochs (2018, 2027, and 2037). We find that these upper limits are higher for higher neutron star (NS) kick velocities due to increased absorption from the surrounding cold ejecta. We compare NS cooling models with both the intrinsic luminosity limits obtained from the X-ray spectra and the ALMA constraints with the assumption that the observed blob of SN 1987A is primarily heated by thermal emission. We find that the synthetic Lynx spectra are crucial to constrain the physical properties of the CCO, which will be confirmed by future observations in the 2040s. We draw our conclusions based on two scenarios, namely the nondetection and detection of the NS by Lynx. If the NS is not detected, its kick velocity should be ≃700 km s ^−1 . Furthermore, nondetection of the NS would suggest rapid cooling processes at the age of 40 yr, implying strong crust superfluidity. Conversely, in the case of NS detection, the mass of the NS envelope must be high.

Abstract

The dynamics and spectral characteristics of supernova ejecta reveal details of the supernova energetics, explosive nucleosynthesis, and evolution of the progenitor. However, in practice, this important diagnostic information is only derived from CCD-resolution X-ray spectra of shock-heated material. If the spectra were to be observed at higher resolution, then important clues to the explosion energetics would be obvious through measurements of bulk Doppler motions and turbulence in the ejecta. Likewise, the unshocked ejecta in supernovae and young remnants are responsible for obscuring the emission from ejecta on the back side of the remnant. In light of these important effects, we present line-of-sight spectral maps of core-collapse supernova remnant models. We explore the bulk Doppler broadening of spectral lines, including line-of-sight effects. We also explore the time-dependent absorption from both shocked and unshocked ejecta. Finally, we discuss how future X-ray missions such as XRISM and Athena will be able to resolve these effects in nearby and extragalactic supernovae and their remnants.

Here, Ito et al. show the reproduction of this relation in 3D hydrodynamical simulations followed by radiative transfer calculations, which suggest the photospheric emission is the dominant component in the prompt phase of GRBs.

Abstract

Abstract Markarian 421 is a high-peaked BL Lac object and it has undergone many strong outbursts since its discovery as a TeV source in 1992. Markarian 421 has been studied intensively and was observed by various Cherenkov telescope arrays ever since. The outbursts of April 2004 observed by the Whipple telescope and of February 2010 by the HESS telescopes are explained well in this work by using the photohadronic model. To account for the attenuation of these high-energy gamma-rays by the extragalactic background light (EBL), we use template EBL models. The intrinsic spectrum of each epoch is different even though the high-energy protons have almost the same spectral index. We observe that this difference in intrinsic spectra is due to the change in the spectral index of the low-energy tail of the synchrotron self Compton (SSC) photons during different epochs of flaring. Our results show that the contemporaneous multiwavelength observations, particularly in the low-energy tail region of the SSC emission of the source, are important in explaining the flaring phenomenon.

Abstract

Abstract The VHE emission from the HBLs H 2356-309 and 1ES 1101-232 were observed by the HESS telescopes during 2004–2007. Particularly the observations in 2004 from H 2356-309 and during 2004–2005 from 1ES 1101-232 were analyzed to derive strong upper limits on the EBL, which were found to be consistent with the lower limits from the integrated light of resolved galaxies. Here we have used the photohadronic model corroborated by two template EBL models to fit the observed VHE gamma-ray data from these two HBLs and to predict their intrinsic spectra. We obtain very good fit to the VHE spectra of these two HBLs. However, the predicted intrinsic spectra are different for each EBL model. For the HBL H 2356-309, we obtain a flat intrinsic spectrum and for 1ES 1101-232 the spectrum is mildly harder than 2 but much softer than 1.5.

Abstract

Black-hole (BH) accretion disks formed in compact-object mergers or collapsars may be major sites of the rapid-neutron-capture (r-)process, but the conditions determining the electron fraction (Y_e) remain uncertain given the complexity of neutrino transfer and angular-momentum transport. After discussing relevant weak-interaction regimes, we study the role of neutrino absorption for shaping Y_e using an extensive set of simulations performed with two-moment neutrino transport and again without neutrino absorption. We vary the torus mass, BH mass and spin, and examine the impact of rest-mass and weak-magnetism corrections in the neutrino rates. We also test the dependence on the angular-momentum transport treatment by comparing axisymmetric models using the standard alpha-viscosity with viscous models assuming constant viscous length scales (l_t) and three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. Finally, we discuss the nucleosynthesis yields and basic kilonova properties. We find that absorption pushes Y_e towards ~0.5 outside the torus, while inside increasing the equilibrium value Y_e^eq by ~0.05-0.2. Correspondingly, a substantial ejecta fraction is pushed above Y_e=0.25, leading to a reduced lanthanide fraction and a brighter, earlier, and bluer kilonova than without absorption. More compact tori with higher neutrino optical depth, tau, tend to have lower Y_e^eq up to tau~1-10, above which absorption becomes strong enough to reverse this trend. Disk ejecta are less (more) neutron-rich when employing an l_t=const. viscosity (MHD treatment). The solar-like abundance pattern found for our MHD model marginally supports collapsar disks as major r-process sites, although a strong r-process may be limited to phases of high mass-infall rates, Mdot>~ 2 x 10^(-2) Msun/s., 37 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables, accepted to MNRAS, minor changes compared to previous version

Abstract

Fully general-relativistic binary-neutron-star (BNS) merger simulations with quark-hadron crossover (QHC) equations of state (EOSs) are studied for the first time. In contrast to EOSs with purely hadronic matter or with a first-order quark-hadron phase transition (1PT), in the transition region QHC EOSs show a peak in sound speed, and thus a stiffening. We study the effects of such stiffening in the merger and post-merger gravitational (GW) signals. Through simulations in the binary-mass range $2.5 < M/M_{\odot} < 2.75$, characteristic differences due to different EOSs appear in the frequency of the main peak of the post-merger GW spectrum ($f_2$), extracted through Bayesian inference. In particular, we found that (i) for lower-mass binaries, since the maximum baryon number density ($n_{\rm max}$) after the merger stays below $3\text{--}4$ times the nuclear-matter density ($n_0$), the characteristic stiffening of the QHC models in that density range results in a lower $f_2$ than that computed for the underlying hadronic EOS and thus also than that for EOSs with a 1PT, (ii) for higher-mass binaries, where $n_{\rm max}$ may exceed $4\text{--}5 n_0$ depending on the EOS model, whether $f_2$ in QHC models is higher or lower than that in the underlying hadronic model depends on the height of the sound-speed peak. Comparing the values of $f_2$ for different EOSs and BNS masses gives important clues on how to discriminate different types of quark dynamics in the high-density end of EOSs and is relevant to future kilohertz GW observations with third-generation GW detectors., 6+8 pages, 5+6 figures

Abstract

Since the day of its explosion, supernova (SN) 1987A has been closely monitored to study its evolution and to detect its central compact relic. In fact, the formation of a neutron star is strongly supported by the detection of neutrinos from the SN. However, besides the detection in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) data of a feature that is compatible with the emission arising from a proto-pulsar wind nebula (PWN), the only hint for the existence of such elusive compact object is provided by the detection of hard emission in NuSTAR data up to ~ 20 keV. We report on the simultaneous analysis of multi-epoch observations of SN 1987A performed with Chandra, XMM-Newton and NuSTAR. We also compare the observations with a state-of-the-art 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulation of SN 1987A. A heavily absorbed power-law, consistent with the emission from a PWN embedded in the heart of SN 1987A, is needed to properly describe the high-energy part of the observed spectra. The spectral parameters of the best-fit power-law are in agreement with the previous estimate, and exclude diffusive shock acceleration as a possible mechanism responsible for the observed non-thermal emission. The information extracted from our analysis are used to infer the physical characteristics of the pulsar and the broad-band emission of its nebula, in agreement with the ALMA data. Analysis of the synthetic spectra also show that, in the near future, the main contribution to Fe K emission line will originate in the outermost shocked ejecta of SN 1987A., Accepted for publication in ApJ

Abstract

Type Ia supernovae (SNe) are believed to be caused by the thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf (WD), but the nature of the progenitor system(s) is still unclear. Recent theoretical and observational developments have led to renewed interest in double degenerate models, in particular the "helium-ignited violent merger" or "dynamically-driven double-degenerate double-detonation" (D$^6$). In this paper we take the output of an existing D$^6$ SN model and carry it into the supernova remnant (SNR) phase up to 4000 years after the explosion, past the time when all the ejecta have been shocked. Assuming a uniform ambient medium, we reveal specific signatures of the explosion mechanism and spatial variations intrinsic to the ejecta. The first detonation produces an ejecta tail visible at early times, while the second detonation leaves a central density peak in the ejecta that is visible at late times. The SNR shell is off-centre at all times, because of an initial velocity shift due to binary motion. The companion WD produces a large conical shadow in the ejecta, visible in projection as a dark patch surrounded by a bright ring. This is a clear and long-lasting feature that is localized, and its impact on the observed morphology is dependent on the viewing angle of the SNR. These results offer a new way to diagnose the explosion mechanism and progenitor system using observations of a Type Ia SNR., Comment: Accepted by ApJ. Abstract

We theoretically discuss the non-Hermitian superfluid phase transition in one-dimensional two-component Fermi gases near the $p$-wave Feshbach resonance accompanied by the two-body loss associated with the dipolar relaxation. For the first time we point out that this system gives us an opportunity to explore the interplay among various non-trivial properties such as universal thermodynamics at divergent $p$-wave scattering length, topological phase transition at vanishing chemical potential, and non-Hermitian Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer(BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) transition, in a unified manner. In the BCS phase, the loss-induced superfluid-normal transition occurs when the exceptional point appears in the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. In the BEC phase, the diffusive gapless mode can be regarded as a precursor of the instability of the superfluid state. Abstract

The Neil Gehrels Swift observatory observe Gamma-Ray bursts (GRBs) plateaus in X-rays. We test the reliability of the closure relations through the fireball model when dealing with the GRB plateau emission. We analyze 455 X-ray lightcurves (LCs) collected by \emph{Swift} from 2005 (January) until 2019 (August) for which the redshift is both known and unknown using the phenomenological Willingale 2007 model. Using these fits, we analyze the emission mechanisms and astrophysical environments of these GRBs through the closure relations within the time interval of the plateau emission. Finally, we test the 3D fundamental plane relation (Dainotti relation) which connects the prompt peak luminosity, the time at the end of the plateau (rest-frame), and the luminosity at that time, on the GRBs with redshift, concerning groups determined by the closure relations. This allows us to check if the intrinsic scatter \sigma_{int} of any of these groups is reduced compared to previous literature. The most fulfilled environments for the electron spectral distribution, p>2, are Wind Slow Cooling (SC) and ISM Slow Cooling for cases in which the parameter q, which indicates the flatness of the plateau emission and accounts for the energy injection, is =0 and =0.5, respectively, both in the cases with known and unknown redshifts. We also find that for the sGRBs All ISM Environments with $q=0$ have the smallest \sigma_{int}=0.04 \pm 0.15 in terms of the fundamental plane relation holding a probability of occurring by chance of p=0.005. We have shown that the majority of GRBs presenting the plateau emission fulfil the closure relations, including the energy injection, with a particular preference for the Wind SC environment. Abstract

We present the first global model of prompt emission from a short gamma-ray burst that consistently describes the evolution of the central black-hole (BH) torus system, the propagation of the jet through multi-component merger ejecta, the transition into free expansion, and the photospheric emission from the relativistic jet. To this end, we perform a special relativistic neutrino-hydrodynamics simulation of a viscous BH-torus system, which is formed about 500ms after the merger and is surrounded by dynamical ejecta as well as neutron star winds, along with a jet that is injected in the vicinity of the central BH. In a post-processing step, we compute the photospheric emission using a relativistic Monte-Carlo radiative transfer code. It is found that the wind from the torus leaves a strong imprint on the jet as well as on the emission causing narrow collimation and rapid time variability. The viewing angle dependence of the emission gives rise to correlations among the spectral peak energy, E_p, isotropic energy, E_iso, and peak luminosity, L_p, which may provide natural explanations for the Amati- and Yonetoku-relations. Abstract

Massive stars can shed material via steady, line-driven winds, eruptive outflows, or mass-transfer onto a binary companion. In the case of single stars, the mass is deposited by the stellar wind into the nearby environment. After the massive star explodes, the stellar ejecta interact with this circumstellar material (CSM), often-times resulting in bright X-ray line emission from both the shock-heated CSM and ejecta. The amount of material lost by the progenitor, the mass of ejecta, and its energetics all impact the bulk spectral characteristics of this X-ray emission. Here we present a grid of core-collapse supernova remnant models derived from models for massive stars with zero age main sequence masses of $\sim$ 10 - 30 M$_\odot$ evolved from the pre-main sequence stage with wind-driven mass-loss. Evolution is handled by a multi-stage pipeline of software packages. First, we use mesa (Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics) to evolve the progenitors from pre-main sequence to iron core collapse. We then use the Supernova Explosion Code (snec) to explode the mesa models, and follow them for the first 100 days following core-collapse. Finally, we couple the snec output, along with the CSM generated from mesa mass-loss rates, into the Cosmic-Ray Hydrodynamics code (ChN) to model the remnant phase to 7000 years post core-collapse. At the end of each stage, we compare our outputs with those found in the literature, and we examine any qualitative and quantitative differences in the bulk properties of the remnants and their spectra based on the initial progenitor mass, as well as mass-loss history., 19 pages, 25 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ

Abstract

Recent multi-dimensional simulations suggest that high-entropy buoyant plumes help massive stars to explode. Outwardly protruding iron-rich fingers in the galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A are uniquely suggestive of this picture. Detecting signatures of specific elements synthesized in the high-entropy nuclear burning regime (i.e., $\alpha$-rich freeze out) would be among the strongest substantiating evidence. Here we report the discovery of such elements, stable Ti and Cr, at a confidence level greater than 5$\sigma$ in the shocked high-velocity iron-rich ejecta of Cassiopeia A. We found the observed Ti/Fe and Cr/Fe mass ratios require $\alpha$-rich freeze out, providing the first observational demonstration for the existence of high-entropy ejecta plumes that boosted the shock wave at explosion. The metal composition of the plumes agrees well with predictions for strongly neutrino-processed proton-rich ejecta. These results support the operation of the convective supernova engine via neutrino heating in the supernova that produced Cassiopeia A., Comment: 34 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

The Large Area Telescope (LAT) on board the \Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope (\Fermi) shows long-lasting high-energy emission in many gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), similar to X-ray afterglows observed by the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory \citep[\textit{Swift};][]{gehrels2004}. Some LAT light curves (LCs) show a late-time flattening reminiscent of X-ray plateaus. We explore the presence of plateaus in LAT temporally extended emission analyzing GRBs from the second \lat GRB Catalog \citep[2FLGC;][]{Ajello2019apj} from 2008 to May 2016 with known redshifts, and check whether they follow closure relations corresponding to 4 distinct astrophysical environments predicted by the external forward shock (ES) model. We find that three LCs can be fit by the same phenomenological model used to fit X-ray plateaus \citep{Willingale2007} and show tentative evidence for the existence of plateaus in their high-energy extended emission. The most favorable scenario is a slow cooling regime, whereas the preferred density profile for each GRBs varies from a constant density ISM to a $r^{-2}$ wind environment. We also compare the end time of the plateaus in $\gamma$-rays and X-rays using a statistical comparison with 222 \textit{Swift} GRBs with plateaus and known redshifts from January 2005 to August 2019. Within this comparison, the case of GRB 090510 shows an indication of chromaticity at the end time of the plateau. Finally, we update the 3-D fundamental plane relation among the rest frame end time of the plateau, its correspondent luminosity, and the peak prompt luminosity for 222 GRBs observed by \textit{Swift}. Abstract

Since the day of its explosion, SN 1987A (SN87A) was closely monitored with the aim to study its evolution and to detect its central compact relic. The detection of neutrinos from the supernova strongly supports the formation of a neutron star (NS). However, the constant and fruitless search for this object has led to different hypotheses on its nature. Up to date, the detection in the ALMA data of a feature somehow compatible with the emission arising from a proto Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) is the only hint of the existence of such elusive compact object. Here we tackle this 33-years old issue by analyzing archived observations of SN87A performed Chandra and NuSTAR in different years. We firmly detect nonthermal emission in the $10-20$ kev energy band, due to synchrotron radiation. The possible physical mechanism powering such emission is twofold: diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) or emission arising from an absorbed PWN. By relating a state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamic simulation of SN87A to the actual data, we reconstruct the absorption pattern of the PWN embedded in the remnant and surrounded by cold ejecta. Abstract

HiZ-GUNDAM is a future satellite mission which will lead the time-domain astronomy and the multi-messenger astronomy through observations of high-energy transient phenomena. A mission concept of HiZ-GUNDAM was approved by ISAS/JAXA, and it is one of the future satellite candidates of JAXA’s medium-class mission. We are in pre-phase A (before pre-project) and elaborating the mission concept, mission/system requirements for the launch in the late 2020s. The main themes of HiZ-GUNDAM mission are (1) exploration of the early universe with high-redshift gamma-ray bursts, and (2) contribution to the multi-messenger astronomy. HiZ-GUNDAM has two kinds of mission payload. The wide field X-ray monitors consist of Lobster Eye optics array and focal imaging sensor, and monitor ~1 steradian field of view in 0.5 – 4 keV energy range. The near infrared telescope has an aperture size 30 cm in diameter, and simultaneously observes four wavelength bands between 0.5 – 2.5 μm. In this paper, we introduce the mission overview of HiZ-GUNDAM.

Abstract

In this paper we report the first close, high-resolution observations of downward-directed terrestrial gamma-ray flashes (TGFs) detected by the large-area Telescope Array cosmic ray observatory, obtained in conjunction with broadband VHF interferometer and fast electric field change measurements of the parent discharge. The results show that the TGFs occur during strong initial breakdown pulses (IBPs) in the first few milliseconds of negative cloud-to-ground and low-altitude intracloud flashes, and that the IBPs are produced by a newly-identified streamer-based discharge process called fast negative breakdown. The observations indicate the relativistic runaway electron avalanches (RREAs) responsible for producing the TGFs are initiated by embedded spark-like transient conducting events (TCEs) within the fast streamer system, and potentially also by individual fast streamers themselves. The TCEs are inferred to be the cause of impulsive sub-pulses that are characteristic features of classic IBP sferics. Additional development of the avalanches would be facilitated by the enhanced electric field ahead of the advancing front of the fast negative breakdown. In addition to showing the nature of IBPs and their enigmatic sub-pulses, the observations also provide a possible explanation for the unsolved question of how the streamer to leader transition occurs during the initial negative breakdown, namely as a result of strong currents flowing in the final stage of successive IBPs, extending backward through both the IBP itself and the negative streamer breakdown preceding the IBP., Comment: Typo fixed and reference added. Abstract

Cosmological models and the value of their parameters are at the center of the debate because of the tension between the results obtained by the SNe Ia data and the Plank ones of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Thus, adding cosmological probes observed at high redshifts, such as Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs), is needed. Using GRB correlations between luminosities and a cosmological independent variable is challenging because GRB luminosities vary widely. We corrected a tight correlation between the rest-frame end time of the X-ray plateau, its corresponding X-ray luminosity, and the peak prompt luminosity: the so-called fundamental plane relation, using the jet opening angle. Its intrinsic scatter is 0:017 m 0:010 dex, 95% smaller than the isotropic fundamental plane relation, the smallest compared to any current GRB correlation in the literature. This shows that GRBs can be used as reliable cosmological tools. We use this GRB corrected correlation for the so-called platinum sample (a well-defined set with relatively flat plateaus), together with SNe Ia data, to constrain different cosmological parameters like the matter content of the universe today, M, the Hubble constant H0, and the dark energy parameter w for a wCDM model. We confirm the wCDM model but using GRBs up to z = 5, a redshift range much larger than one of SNe Ia.

Abstract

We present our follow-up observations to search for an electromagnetic counterpart of the IceCube high-energy neutrino, IceCube-170922A. Monitoring observations of a likely counterpart, TXS 0506+056, are also described. First, we quickly took optical and near-infrared images of 7 flat-spectrum radio sources within the IceCube error region right after the neutrino detection and found a rapid flux decline of TXS 0506+056 in Kanata/HONIR J-band data. Motivated by this discovery, intensive follow-up observations of TXS 0506+056 are continuously done, including our monitoring imaging observations, spectroscopic observations, and polarimetric observations in optical and near-infrared wavelengths. TXS 0506+056 shows a large amplitude (~1.0 mag) variability in a time scale of several days or longer, although no significant variability is detected in a time scale of a day or shorter. TXS 0506+056 also shows a bluer-when-brighter trend in optical and near-infrared wavelengths. Structure functions of variabilities are examined and indicate that TXS 0506+056 is not a special blazar in terms of optical variability. Abstract

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most explosive phenomena in the Universe after the Big Bang. A large fraction of GRB lightcurves (LCs) shows X-ray plateaus. We perform the most comprehensive analysis of all GRBs (with known and unknown redshifts) with plateau emission observed by The Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory from its launch until August 2019. We fit 455 LCs showing a plateau and explore whether these LCs follow closure relations, relations between the temporal and spectral indices of the afterglow, corresponding to 2 distinct astrophysical environments and cooling regimes within the external forward shock (ES) model, and find that the ES model works for the majority of cases. The most favored environments are a constant density interstellar or wind medium with slow cooling. We also confirm the existence of the fundamental plane relation between the rest-frame time and luminosity at the end of the plateau emission and the peak prompt luminosity for this enlarged sample, and test this relation on groups corresponding to the astrophysical environments of our known redshift sample. The plane becomes a crucial discriminant corresponding to these environments in terms of the best fitting parameters and dispersions. Most GRBs for which the closure relations are fulfilled with respect to astrophysical environments have an intrinsic scatter sigma compatible within 1 sigma of that of the Gold GRBs, a subset of long GRBs with relatively flat plateaus. Abstract

Major outbursts have been observed from the well-known high-energy peaked blazar Markarian 501 since its discovery in 1996. Especially, two episodes of very high energy gamma-ray flaring events during May-July 2005 and June 2012 are of special significance, when the source exhibited extreme HBL-like behavior. The successful standard photohadronic model seems inadequate to explain these extraneous behaviors. We propose a two-zone photohadronic scenario to overcome this problem. In this picture, the low energy regime (zone-1) of the spectrum follows the standard photohadronic interpretation, while the high energy regime (zone-2) of the spectrum is new, with a spectral index $\delta_2\geq 3.1$, which is solely due to the extreme nature of the flaring event. We also estimate the bulk Lorentz factor corresponding to these extreme flaring events.
