Whether long noncoding RNAs participate in the formation of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) through the regulation of SMC phenotypic switching is unknown. lincRNA-p21 induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS) is likely functionally associated with SMC phenotypic switching. We thus investigated the role of lincRNA-p21 in SMC phenotypic switching-associated AAA formation and its underlying mechanisms. An analysis of human and mouse abdominal aortic samples revealed that the lincRNA-p21 levels were significantly higher in AAA tissue. Stimulation with hydrogen peroxide upregulated the expression of lincRNA-p21 in a dose-dependent manner and converted SMCs from a contractile phenotype to a synthetic, proteolytic, and proinflammatory phenotype in vitro. Moreover, lincRNA-p21 promoted fracture of elastic fibres, reconstruction of the vascular wall, and AAA formation in vivo by modulating SMC phenotypic switching in two mouse models of AAA induced by angiotensin II or porcine pancreatic elastase (PPE) perfusion. Using a bioinformatics prediction method and luciferase reporter gene assays, we further proved that lincRNA-p21 sponged miR-204-5p to release the transcriptional activity of Mekk3 and promoted the NF-κB pathway and thereby played a role in the SMC phenotypic switch and AAA formation. The ROS levels were positively correlated with the lincRNA-p21 levels in human and mouse AAA tissues. The knockdown of lincRNA-p21 in a PPE-induced mouse AAA model increased the miR-204-5p levels and reduced the expression of Mekk3, whereas lincRNA-p21 overexpression had the opposite effect. Collectively, the results indicated that ROS-induced lincRNA-p21 sponges miR-204-5p to accelerate synthetic and proinflammatory SMC phenotypes through the Mekk3/NF-κB pathway in AAA formation. Thus, lincRNA-p21 may have therapeutic potential for AAA formation.

Low costs (material, energy and time), high joint properties are the eternal pursuit of modern welding. In this paper, mechanisms of an innovative high frequency electric cooperated arc welding (HFAW) in enhancing welding productivity (joint penetration) and weld property control were comprehensively investigated. The process properties and weld mechanisms of this method were systematically compared with that of the traditional GMAW welding under typical process parameters. The results showed that 4.8 mm joint with an large aspect ratio of 4 was achieved by single pass HFAW at a high welding speed (15 mm/s) and a low welding heat input (reduced 1/3 than the traditional GMAW). The research on weld property control shows that the microstructure of weld zone and heat affected zone (HAZ) in the HFAW joint was much smaller than that in the GMAW joint under optimal parameters. The width of each zone in the HAZ, thermal cycle parameters such as elevated temperature holding time and cooling rate can be regulated independently by the high frequency electric heat input ratio. Such regulation is of great significance for high strength steel welding, which needs to control the welding thermal cycle process accurately. Combined with three-dimensional solid reconstruction of liquid filler metal, the mechanism of the HFAW in enhancing joint penetration was demonstrated. An interesting “self-tracking heating” of the high frequency current was found. The cutting-edge of the liquid metal was violently heated and more than half of the weld in thickness direction was achieved by a novel ultra-speed “interfacial tension driving penetrating” weld forming mechanism, which promises the HFAW high welding speed and large aspect ratio on the premise of satisfactory welding quality.

Age-related hearing loss (AHL) is a common, high-incidence, perceptual disease in the elderly population worldwide. Since bisphenol A (BPA) has been reported to associate with cell apoptosis, we hypothesize that BPA can inhibit the neuronal apoptosis in AHL. Forty Wistar rats were recruited to model AHL; they were then treated with different doses of BPA. We used auditory brainstem response testing to measure the BPA-induced improvement in the rats’ hearing. We examined the proliferation and apoptosis of the auditory cortical neurons in the rats with MTT assay and flow cytometry. Also, to delineate the underlying mechanism of BPA’s effect on AHL, we quantitated the expression level of long non-coding RNA X inactive specific transcript (lncRNA XIST) and miR-34a-5p in the rats’ auditory cortex with a novel method called nanoparticle PCR. We found that BPA intervention improved the hearing of AHL model rats, enhanced neuronal cell proliferation, restricted neuronal cell apoptosis, upregulated miR-34a-5p levels, and downregulated lncRNA XIST levels. The dual-luciferase reporter (DLR) assay revealed that BPA inhibited the apoptosis of auditory cortex neurons by targeting miR-34a-5p with lncRNA XIST and regulated the process of AHL. Therefore, we come to a conclusion that BPA contributes to the improvement of AHL, which may be achieved by upregulating miR-34a-5p and inhibiting the apoptosis of auditory cortex neurons via lncRNA XIST.

Scaffold-based three-dimensional (3D) cell culture systems have gained increased interest in cell biology, tissue engineering, and drug screening fields as a replacement of two-dimensional (2D) monolayer cell culture and as a way to provide biomimetic extracellular matrix environments. In this study, microscale fibrous scaffolds were fabricated via electrohydrodynamic printing, and nanoscale features were created on the fiber surface by simply leaching gliadin of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL)/gliadin composites in ethanol solution. The microstructure of the printed scaffolds could be precisely controlled by printing parameters, and the surface nanotopography of the printed fiber could be tuned by varying the PCL/gliadin ratios. By seeding mouse embryonic fibroblast (NIH/3T3) cells and human nonsmall cell lung cancer (A549) cells on the printed scaffolds, the cellular responses showed that the fiber nanotopography on printed scaffolds efficiently favored cell adhesion, migration, proliferation, and tissue formation. Quantitative analysis of the transcript expression levels of A549 cells seeded on nanoporous scaffolds further revealed the upregulation of integrin-β1, focal adhesion kinase, Ki-67, E-cadherin, and epithelial growth factor receptors over what was observed in the cells grown on the pure PCL scaffold. Background Magnetic targeting may help microbubbles (MBs) reach obstructive thrombi and improve the efficacy of MB-mediated sonothrombolysis, but the role of magnetic targeting in MB-mediated sonothrombolysis remains elusive. Objectives We investigate the feasibility and efficacy of magnetically targeted MB-mediated sonothrombolysis for the treatment of obstructive thrombi. Materials and Methods Red and white thromboembolic models were established in vitro and in vivo. The models were randomly assigned to the control, ultrasound plus control MB (US + C-MB), ultrasound plus magnetic MB (US + M-MB), or US + M-MB + recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (r-tPA) groups and treated for 30 minutes. The recanalization rate, average blood flow velocity, hindlimb perfusion, and skeletal muscle injury marker levels were recorded. Results The recanalization rate, average blood flow velocity, and hindlimb perfusion in the red and white thromboembolic models were all significantly higher in the US + M-MB and US + M-MB + r-tPA groups than in the control and US + C-MB groups both in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, the levels of the skeletal muscle injury markers were all significantly lower in the US + M-MB and US + M-MB + r-tPA groups than in the other two groups in vivo for both thromboembolic models. However, the thrombolytic effects of red thrombi performed better than those of white thrombi in the US + M-MB + r-tPA group. Conclusion M-MB-mediated sonothrombolysis improves the efficacy of thrombolysis both in vitro and in vivo, and reduces tissue damage in clogging model; thus, this method may serve as a promising approach for treating thrombus-occlusive diseases.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is accepted as a chronic vascular inflammatory disease. However, how the inflammatory response is regulated during AAA formation is not fully understood. This study was undertaken to determine whether the long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) H19 (H19) promotes AAA formation by enhancing aortic inflammation. qRT-PCR detected the upregulation of H19 in human and mouse AAA tissue samples. Co-staining for H19 and the macrophage marker MAC-2 showed that H19 was located in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) and infiltrating aortic macrophages. In vivo overexpression of H19 increased vascular inflammation and induced AAA formation, which was supported by exacerbated aortic morphology, maximum aortic diameter values, elastin degradation, expression of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and macrophage chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), and macrophage infiltration. H19 suppression resulted in the opposite effects. A rescue experiment indicated that IL-6 neutralization significantly mitigated the aortic inflammation and AAA formation evoked by H19 overexpression. Luciferase reporter assays and ex vivo experiments using VSMCs and macrophages confirmed that H19 induced aneurysm formation in part via endogenous competition with the let-7a microRNA to induce the transcription of its target gene, IL-6. This mechanism was further validated by in vivo experiments using a mutant H19 that could not effectively bind let-7a. Collectively, our study revealed a pathogenic H19/let-7a/IL-6 inflammatory pathway in AAA formation, which offers a new potential therapeutic strategy for AAA.

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) have important potential in modulating vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) activity, but their roles in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) are unknown. We performed in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry and determined that circChordc1 (cysteine and histidine-rich domain containing 1) was markedly downregulated in aneurysm tissue compared with normal arteries. A gene gain and loss strategy was used to confirm that circChordc1 transformed VSMCs into a contracted phenotype and improved their growth, which significantly suppressed aneurysm formation and reduced the risk of rupture in mouse models of angiotensin (Ang) II- and CaCl2-induced AAA. RNA pull-down, immunoprecipitation, and immunoblotting indicated that circChordc1 facilitated the VSMC phenotype and growth determination by binding to vimentin and ANXA2 (annexin A2), which not only increased vimentin phosphorylation to promote its degradation but also promoted the interaction between ANXA2 and glycogen synthase kinase 3 beta (GSK3β) to induce the nuclear entry of β-catenin. Thus, our present study revealed that circChordc1 optimized the VSMC phenotype and improved their growth by inducing vimentin degradation and increasing the activity of the GSK3β/β-catenin pathway, thereby extenuating vascular wall remodeling and reversing pathological aneurysm progression., Graphical abstract, Our study identified a VSMC-specific circChordc1, which optimized the VSMC phenotype and improved their growth by inducing vimentin degradation and activating the GSK3β/β-catenin pathway, thereby extenuating vascular wall remodeling, could be an ideal target for preventing abdominal aortic aneurysm formation and progression.

The efficacy and safety of blood pressure (BP) lowering initiated at baseline systolic BP (SBP) of 130-140 mm Hg in patients with diabetes remain controversial. The authors aimed to investigate the benefits and harms of BP lowering initiated at these levels for patients with diabetes. Medline and EMBASE were searched from inception to March 10, 2018. The primary outcome was major cardiovascular events. Random-effects model was used to pool all the estimates. Six trials with 21 574 diabetics were included. In diabetics, initiating BP lowering at baseline SBP of 130 and 140 mm Hg did not reduce the rate of major cardiovascular events (RR, 1.01 [95% CI, 0.93-1.10]), finding that was consistent in subgroup and sensitivity analyses. Moreover, BP lowering did not reduce the risks of myocardial infarction (RR, 0.99 [95% CI, 0.85-1.16]), stroke (0.83 [95% CI, 0.54-1.27]), heart failure (0.91 [95% CI, 0.79-1.04]), albuminuria (0.93 [95% CI, 0.84-1.04]), end-stage renal disease (0.93 [95% CI, 0.70-1.24]), cardiovascular death (1.25 [95% CI, 0.90-1.74]) and all-cause death (1.05 [95% CI, 0.94-1.17]) in patients with diabetes and baseline SBP of 130-140 mm Hg but possibly increase the risks of serious adverse events (RR, 2.00 [95% CI, 1.33-3.01]) and hypotension (5.30 [95% CI, 0.99-28.40]). In diabetics, initiating BP lowering at baseline SBP of 130-140 mm Hg may not produce any benefit but probably increase the risks of serious adverse events and hypotension. It may not be recommended to initiate BP lowering at a threshold of SBP lower than 140 mm Hg for diabetics.

This study sought to evaluate whether diagnostic ultrasound and microbubbles treatment could improve outcomes of coronary no-reflow by dissolving platelet- and erythrocyte-rich microthrombi. Design: Randomized controlled laboratory investigation. Setting: Research laboratory. Subjects: Mongrel dogs. Interventions: Coronary no-reflow models induced by platelet- or erythrocyte-rich microthrombi were established and randomly assigned to control, ultrasound, recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator, ultrasound + microbubbles, or ultrasound + microbubbles + recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator group. All treatments lasted for 30 minutes. Measurements and Main Results: Percentage of microemboli-obstructed coronary arterioles was lower in ultrasound + microbubbles group than that in control group for platelet- (> 50% obstruction: 10.20% ± 3.56% vs 31.80% ± 3.96%; < 50% obstruction: 14.80% ± 4.15% vs 28.20% ± 3.56%) and erythrocyte-rich microthrombi (> 50% obstruction: 8.20% ± 3.11% vs 30.60% ± 4.83%; < 50% obstruction: 12.80% ± 4.15% vs 25.80% ± 3.70%) (p < 0.001). Percentage change of myocardial blood flow in left anterior descending artery-dominated region, left ventricular ejection fraction, fractional shortening, and ST-segment resolution were higher, whereas infarcted area, troponin I, and creatine kinase MB isoenzyme were lower in ultrasound + microbubbles group than that in control group for both types of microthrombi (p < 0.001). Percentage change of myocardial blood flow, ejection fraction, fractional shortening, and ST-segment resolution were higher, whereas infarcted area, troponin I, and creatine kinase MB isoenzyme were lower in ultrasound + microbubbles and ultrasound + microbubbles + recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator groups than that in recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator group for platelet-rich microthrombi (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Ultrasound + microbubbles treatment could dissolve platelet- and erythrocyte-rich microthrombi, thereby improving outcomes of coronary no-reflow, making it a promising supplement to current reperfusion therapy for acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction.

An efficient and rapid method for quantifying pyrethroids pesticide residue in fruits samples was developed in the present study. The application of lab prepared polystyrene magnetic nanoparticles based magnetic solid phase extraction technique combined with liquid-solid extraction helped clean-up the sample and preconcentrate the targeted analytes prior to HPLC quantification. The lab prepared nanoparticles were characterised with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, as well as vibrating sample magnetometer to study their size, morphology, crystal structure, functional groups and magnetism properties, respectively. Afterwards, optimisation of the parameters affecting extraction efficiency was carried out in order to achieve optimum conditions for extracting pyrethroids residue from fruit samples. Analytical performances were evaluated by carrying out experiments at optimum conditions. Results showed that the limit of detection and limit of quantification were below 0.1445 and 0.5116 ng g−1, respectively for the six pyrethroids tested. The recovery rates were within the range of 73.6%–123.1% with intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation being less than 16.5% and 15.4%, respectively, suggesting satisfactory reproducibility of the proposed method. Real sample analysis was performed using 6 kinds of commonly consumed fruits obtained from local supermarkets in Singapore, including apples, pears, oranges, lemons, grapes and nectarines. The peel and flesh were tested separately to study the difference of pyrethroids residue in different parts of fruits. The grape sample tested was detected with permethrin residue on its peel. There was no violation since the permethrin amount detected was way much lower than the maximum residue limit set by local government.

3 mm thick Al-steel dissimilar metals were butt welded by a newly developed high frequency electric cooperated arc welding-brazing (HFAW-B) without grooves or shaping board. Microstructure characteristics and mechanical property of the joint were investigated and compared with that of the traditional single MIG joint. Results showed that sound joint with satisfactory weld appearance was achieved by the HFAW-B process under a low welding heat input (826 J/cm), while much higher heat input (1036 J/cm) was required for the traditional MIG process. The interfacial IMCs layer of the HFAW-B joint was homogeneous and thin (limited to 4.0 μm). In the traditional MIG joint, even with the same heat input, the maximum thickness of the IMCs layer exceeded 5.0 μm and massive Al-Fe brittle IMCs were found in the weld seam. When acceptable back weld appearance was obtained, a 20 μm IMCs layer was observed in the traditional MIG joint, which was extremely uneven and cracked after welding. Detailed analysis revealed that the uniform heating in thickness direction, preheating ahead of weld pool and differentiate heating of the HFAW-B process were beneficial to realize compatible regulation of interface characteristics and (back) weld appearance of Al/steel joint, i.e., to achieve not only a good weld appearance but also a thin compound layer under a low heat input. Benefitted from the sound weld appearance, thin interfacial IMCs layer and uniform stress distribution, the HFAW-B joint necked at Al side, and presented a tensile strength exceeded 90 % the strength of Al base metal.

Carvacrol is an effective antimicrobial agent originated from essential oils, this natural antimicrobial agent has higher consumer acceptance compared to chemical agents. Due to the low solubility of carvacrol in water, carvacrol was delivered as a nanoemulsion. A carvacrol nanoemulsion contained 3.5% (w/w) oil phase (1% carvacrol and 2.5% corn oil, w/w) and 3.5% (w/w) Tween 80 was produced by ultrasonification at 10 min using 100% amplitude; the median particle size was 309 ± 19 nm. The nanoemulsion was shelf-life stable for 1 month without any significant changes in particle size. When applied against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pichia pastoris GS115 growth in nutrient broth, carvacrol nanoemulsion (0.5% w/w carvacrol) achieved 3 log reductions of microorganisms. When microorganisms were fixed and dried on stainless steel coupon surface, the carvacrol nanoemulsion treatment was more effective on E. coli than P. pastoris with about 5 and 0.3 log reduction of viable count, respectively. The native microflora on shredded cabbages was challenged by combining carvacrol nanoemulsion and acidic electrolysed water (AEW) that contained ≤ 4 mg/L free available chlorine (FAC). The treatment reduced about 0.5 log of aerobic mesophilic and psychrotropic bacteria counts and the antimicrobial activity of carvacrol nanoemulsion and AEW lasted up to 2 days. The results indicated that carvacrol nanoemulsion is promising in controlling the safety of fresh-cut vegetables.

Electrolysed water (EW) is an activated liquid with a high oxidation-reduction potential. EW causes oxidative damage to pathogenic microorganisms and as a result, may have utility in the food industry. The molecular mechanism of EW's action is not understood. In this study, we exposed Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 to a sub-lethal concentration of EW and examined structural and metabolic changes. Atomic force microscopy revealed that EW caused damage to E. coli membranes. To understand the metabolic responses to EW perturbations in of E. coli, multivariate data analysis of NMR spectroscopy demonstrated that EW significantly influenced the metabolic state. This included reducing nucleotide and amino acid biosynthesis, suppressing energy-associated metabolism, altering osmotic adjustment, and promoting fatty acid metabolism. The results enrich our understanding of E. coli metabolic changes caused by EW perturbation and support the effectiveness of the NMR metabolomics as a valuable tool to analyse and evaluate such a complex biological system.

Vacuum impregnation was used to improve the quality attributes of fresh-cut papayas. Vacuum pressure of 5 kPa was applied for 5 min, then calcium lactate (1%, w/w) and pectin methylesterase (PME) (15 U/ml), alone and in combinations (calcium lactate plus PME), were vacuum impregnated into fresh-cut papaya cubes. Papaya cubes were stored at 4 °C, and the quality of fresh-cut papaya was studied at intervals for 8 days. Background We aimed to investigate the comparative cardiovascular benefits of high-dose statin, ezetimibe-statin, and PCSK9 inhibitor-statin treatments in secondary prevention patients.Methods and Results:We selected 12 randomized controlled trials (n=131,978 patients) using PubMed and Embase (inception-June 1, 2018). Subgroup differences were explored by meta-regression and Cochran Q test. The relative effects of high-dose statin, ezetimibe-statin, and PCSK9 inhibitor-statin on major cardiovascular events (MACE), and revascularization were varied and decreased gradually, of which high-dose statin resulted in lower risk of MACE and revascularization than PCSK9 inhibitor-statin per 1 mmol/L reduction of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C): risk ratio (RR) for MACE, 0.86 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.81-0.90) for high-dose statin, 0.90 (95% CI, 0.83-0.96) for ezetimibe-statin, and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.92-0.96) for PCSK9 inhibitor-statin; RR for revascularization, 0.84 (95% CI, 0.77-0.90) for high-dose statin, 0.91 (95% CI, 0.81-1.00) for ezetimibe-statin, and 0.94 (95% CI, 0.90-0.97) for PCSK9 inhibitor-statin. Similar relative effects of intensive lipid-lowering treatment were also observed in analyses of myocardial infarction and stroke, although no significant difference between groups was identified. While the majority of the natural carotenoid pigments are based on 40-carbon (C40) skeleton, some carotenoids from bacteria have larger C50 skeleton, biosynthesized by attaching two isoprene units (C5) to both sides of the C40 carotenoid pigment lycopene. Subsequent cyclization reactions result in the production of C50 carotenoids with diverse and unique skeletal structures. To produce even larger nonnatural novel carotenoids with C50 + C5 + C5 = C60 skeletons, we systematically coexpressed natural C50 carotenoid biosynthetic enzymes (lycopene C5-elongases and C50-cyclases) from various bacterial sources together with the laboratory-engineered nonnatural C50-lycopene pathway in Escherichia coli. Among the tested enzymes, the elongases and cyclases from Micrococcus luteus exhibited significant activity toward C50-lycopene, and yielded the novel carotenoids C60-flavuxanthin and C60-sarcinaxanthin. Moreover, coexpression of M. luteus elongase with Corynebacterium cyclase resulted in the production of C60-sarcinaxanthin, C60-sarprenoxanthin, and C60-decaprenoxanthin.

Objective: Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) may serve as specific targets for the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). LncRNA GAS5, functionally associated with smooth muscle cell (SMC) apoptosis and proliferation, is likely involved in AAA formation, but the exact role of GAS5 in AAA is unknown. We thus explored the contribution of GAS5 to SMC-regulated AAA formation and its underlying mechanisms. Methods: Human specimens were used to verify the diverse expression of GAS5 in normal and AAA tissues. The angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced AAA model in ApoE-/- mice and the CaCl2-induced AAA model in wild-type C57BL/6 mice were used. RNA pull-down and luciferase reporter gene assays were performed in human aortic SMCs to detect the interaction between GAS5 and its downstream targets of protein or microRNA (miR). Results: GAS5 expression was significantly upregulated in human AAA specimens and two murine AAA models compared to human normal aortas and murine sham-operated controls. GAS5 overexpression induced SMC apoptosis and repressed its proliferation, thereby promoting AAA formation in two murine AAA models. Y-box-binding protein 1 (YBX1) was identified as a direct target of GAS5 while it also formed a positive feedback loop with GAS5 to regulate the downstream target p21. Furthermore, GAS5 acted as a miR-21 sponge to release phosphatase and tensin homolog from repression, which blocked the activation and phosphorylation of Akt to inhibit proliferation and promote apoptosis in SMCs. Conclusion: The LncRNA GAS5 contributes to SMC survival during AAA formation. Thus, GAS5 might serve as a novel target against AAA.

Background The impact of remote ischaemic preconditioning (RIPC) on major clinical outcomes in patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery remains controversial. We systematically reviewed the available evidence to evaluate the potential benefits of RIPC in such patients. Methods PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for relevant randomised controlled trials (RCTs) conducted between January 2006 and March 2016. The pooled population of patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery was divided into the RIPC and control groups. Trial sequential analysis was applied to judge data reliability. The pooled relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between the groups were calculated for all-cause mortality, major adverse cardiovascular and cerebral events (MACCEs), myocardial infarction (MI), and renal failure. Results RIPC was not associated with improvement in all-cause mortality (RR, 1.04; 95%CI, 0.82–1.31; I 2 =26%; P>0.05) or MACCE incidence (RR, 0.90; 95%CI, 0.71–1.14; I 2 =40%; P>0.05) after cardiovascular surgery, and both results were assessed by trial sequential analysis as sufficient and conclusive. Nevertheless, RIPC was associated with a significantly lower incidence of MI (RR, 0.87; 95%CI, 0.76–1.00; I 2 =13%; P≤0.05). However, after excluding a study that had a high contribution to heterogeneity, RIPC was associated with increased rates of renal failure (RR, 1.53; 95%CI, 1.12–2.10; I 2 =5%; P≤0.05). Conclusions In patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery, RIPC reduced the risk for postoperative MI, but not that for MACCEs or all-cause mortality, a discrepancy likely related to the higher rate of renal failure associated with RIPC.

Many people like to buy organic foods, and some believe that organic foods are superior to their conventional food counterparts. In this chapter, recent studies focusing on the comparison between organic foods and conventional counterparts were reviewed. Although existing data could not lead to a definitive conclusion, they did show some trends and probabilities. In this review chapter, the nutrition value of conventional and organic foods involving carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, trace elements, and antioxidants were comparatively reviewed. Discussion from a security perspective was also given based on pesticide residues, heavy metal levels, and mycotoxin content, as well as antimicrobial resistance. Last but not least, it was found that the quality of organic materials was related to various aspects of the food production process such as breeding, environment, mature or harvest period, packaging, processing, and storage. Therefore, it is essential to take into account these factors when we study the quality difference of foods under different patterns.

Aims Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are critical regulators of cardiovascular lineage commitment and heart wall development, but their roles in regulating endogenous cardiac regeneration are unclear. The present study investigated the role of human-derived lncRNA in regulating endogenous cardiac regeneration as well as the underlying mechanisms. Methods and results We compared RNA sequencing data from human foetal and adult hearts and identified a novel lncRNA that was upregulated in adult hearts (Genesymbol NONHSAG000971/NONHSAT002258 or ENST00000497710.5), which was a splice variant of the AZIN2 gene (AZIN2-sv). We used quantitative PCR to confirm the increased expression of AZIN2-sv in adult rat hearts. Coexpression network analysis indicated that AZIN2-sv could regulate proliferation. Loss- and gain-of-function approaches demonstrated that AZIN2-sv negatively regulated endogenous cardiomyocyte proliferation in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of AZIN2-sv attenuated ventricular remodelling and improved cardiac function after myocardial infarction. Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) was identified as a target of AZIN2-sv, their direct binding increased PTEN stability. Furthermore, AZIN2-sv acted as a microRNA-214 sponge to release PTEN, which blocked activation of the PI3 kinase/Akt pathway to inhibit cardiomyocyte proliferation. Conclusions The newly discovered AZIN2-sv suppressed endogenous cardiac regeneration by targeting the PTEN/Akt pathway. Thus, AZIN2-sv may be a novel therapeutic target for preventing and treating heart failure.

To assess the efficacy and safety of glucocorticoid in initial treatment of sudden hearing loss with intratympanic (IT) and systemic ways.We searched the database of PubMed, Cochrane, Embase,CBM, CNKI, VIP, Wanfang systematically. Literatures were screened according to the preestablished inclusion and exclusion standards,and all the RCT literatures associated with intratympanic and systemic glucocorticoid in the initial treatment of sudden hearing loss before may 2015 were collected. All the data, which meet the inclusion standards, were analyzed by using Meta-analysis software.Among all the qualified literatures, 11 randomized controlled trials were included. A total of 1298 cases were involved, including 521 cases with intratympanic administration, 410 with IV-therapy, and 201 with oral therapy. Meta analysis results showed that there was significant difference of the total effective rate and improvement rate between the intratympanic and systemic administration. Intratympanic injection (P0.05) was more effective than systemic administration. There was no significant difference between intratympanic group and oral group (RR = 1.15, 95% CI: 0.92-1.42, P0.05). A significant difference of the effective rate occurred between intratympanic group and IV therapy group (RR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.02-1.34, P0.05). The major complications of intratympanic were pain, dizziness/vertigo, which occurred more frequently than systemic therapy group; The major complications of systemic therapy group were hyperglycaemia, loss of appetite and insomnia.This study shows that the intratympanic (IT) glucocorticoid for sudden deafness is more effective than the systemic administration. But it was not the first choice in clinical treatment. Further studies are warranted.

In this paper, we investigate the dynamical behavior of in-host viral models with humoral immunity and intracellular delays. For both models, using the method of Lyapunov functional, we establish that the global dynamics are determined by two threshold parameters R0 and R1. If R0 ⩽ 1, the uninfected equilibrium E0 is globally asymptotically stable, and the viruses are cleared. If R1 ⩽ 1 E 1 ∗ is globally asymptotically stable, and the infection becomes chronic but with no persistent B cells response. If R1 > 1, the infected equilibrium with B cells response E 2 ∗ is globally asymptotically stable, and the infection is chronic with persistent B cells response. Alone with some numerical simulations.

In this new regulation, most important is that it adds a new A-Pillars impact test and a modified roof strength test to evaluate the resistance of cab in rollover accident. Methodology Firstly, mechanism of commercial vehicle rollover accidents are analyzed in this paper and results show that A-Pillars, side sill, side and front door provide significant enhancements on impact. Then, working procedure verifies the contribution of structure modifications based on relative comparisons. Moreover, AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steel) is also discussed to increase the strength of the great weakness on current cab. Results All of the proposed methods are examined in FEM models and simulation results are confirmed to be satisfactory for giving enough survival space for occupant in frontal and roof impact tests. Limitations of this study Experimental validations will be included in scope of the next work. What does the paper offer that is new in the field in comparison to other works of the author: This study has almost carried simultaneously with the discussion of new version R29 from 2010 to now. The achievement involves relevant approaches acting at crumple zones and the determination of transfer paths between point of concern for deformation and place of impacting. Conclusion The aim is to develop a new or refined quantification methodology for improving commercial vehicle safety, based on computational, experimental and hybrid analyses.

An $SIR$ infectious diseases model with dispersal between two disjoint patches is addressed and discussed. The basic reproduction number $R_{0}$ is defined as the threshold parameter. If $R_{0}$ is below unity, the disease-free equilibrium is shown to be globally asymptotically stable. If $R_{0}$ is above unity and the minor condition holds, the disease persists in the population, and the unique endemic equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable.

In this paper, we investigate global dynamics for an in-host HIV-1 infection model with the long-lived infected cells and four intracellular delays. Our model admits two possible equilibria, an uninfected equilibrium and infected equilibrium depending on the basic reproduction number. We derive that the global dynamics are completely determined by the values of the basic reproduction number: if the basic reproduction number is less than one, the uninfected equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable, and the virus is cleared; if the basic reproduction number is larger than one, then the infection persists, and the infected equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable.

In this paper, we investigate global dynamics for a distributed time delayed HCV infection model. Our model admits two possible equilibria, an uninfected equilibrium and infected equilibrium depending on the basic reproduction number. By employing the method of Lyapunov functional, we prove that the uninfected equilibrium is global asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is less than one, it is unstable and the infected equilibrium is global asymptotically stable if the basic reproduction number is larger than one. The simulations results are in good accordance with our analytic results.
