Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade.

Abstract

Data from High Energy Physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organizational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP and an extended blueprint paper was published in 2012. In July 2014 the DPHEP collaboration was formed as a result of the signature of the Collaboration Agreement by seven large funding agencies (others have since joined or are in the process of acquisition) and in June 2015 the first DPHEP Collaboration Workshop and Collaboration Board meeting took place. Abstract

Data from high-energy physics (HEP) experiments are collected with significant financial and human effort and are mostly unique. An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organisational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP. This paper includes and extends the intermediate report. It provides an analysis of the research case for data preservation and a detailed description of the various projects at experiment, laboratory and international levels. In addition, the paper provides a concrete proposal for an international organisation in charge of the data management and policies in high-energy physics.

Abstract

Do you need to acquire standards-based, cost-effective archiving and preservation services? Are ingest rates, data volume and long-term support important to you? The ARCHIVER project aims to introduce significant improvements in these areas of archiving and digital preservation services, supporting the IT requirements of European scientists developing end-to-end archival and preservation services for data generated in the context of scientific research. With a total procurement budget of 3.4 million euros, the project will use a Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) approach to competitively procure R&D services from firms in three stages covering design, prototyping and pilot, over a 3-year period (Jan 2019 - Dec 2021). The resulting services will become part of the catalogue of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative funded by the European Commission (EC). This contribution will showcase the results obtained during the project phases up to iPRES2019, providing an overview of the PCP process for the supply side and how the wider demand side community can benefit from the ARCHIVER results through the ARCHIVER Early Adopters program.

Abstract

The dawn of Trustworthy Digital Repository Certification under the ISO 16363:2012 standard is on the horizon. Across the digital preservation community, institutions are eager to learn more about the processes of preparing for and undergoing an ISO 16363 audit from an accredited third-party organization. As the first ISO 16363 audits in the world have been performed, repositories want to learn value and benefit that certification provides. This panel features representatives from three different repositories representing three countries with distinct collections, designated communities, organizational infrastructures, and unique challenges. Institutions represented on the panel have either recently achieved certified or are currently undergoing an ISO 16363 audit. This panel will explore each repository’s experience during, leading up to, and following certification. The panel will include a representative from the accredited external auditing body who has performed these audits to respond to audience questions about the audit process. Panelists from repositories will present varying perspectives on the future of digital repository certification, the role of digital preservation standards, and approaches to implementation. All panelists will present arguments, concerns, and criticisms regarding the ISO 16363 standard and existing methods of repository assessment.

Abstract

Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other. In this spirit, this white paper describes the R&D activities required to prepare for this software upgrade. ©2019

Abstract

This document describes the initial Data Management Plan (DMP) for the ARCHIVER project. It addresses the project data collected as part of the execution and management of the Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) process within the project as well as data used as part of the scientific deployments on the resulting ARCHIVER services. The DMPs are using the “Practical Guide to International Alignment of Research Data Management” from Science Europe (https://www.scienceeurope.org/our-resources/practical-guide-to-the-international-alignment-of-research-data-management/): “The aim of the initiative was to develop a set of core requirements for data management plans (DMPs), as well as a list of criteria for the selection of trustworthy repositories where researchers can store their data for sharing. In light of the development of the EOSC and an increasing tendency towards data sharing, these requirements and criteria should help to harmonise rules on data management throughout Europe.” As such, this DMP focuses on data sharing and re-use and in particular on the following issues: What types of data will the project generate/collect? How is personal data managed in the context of the ARCHIVER project? What standards will be used? How will data be exploited and/or shared/made accessible for verification and re-use? Regular updates to this data management plan will be made according to the ARCHIVER project schedule.

22. Collaborative Long-Term Data Preservation: From Hundreds of PB to Tens of EB

In 2012, the Study Group on Data Preservation in High Energy Physics (HEP) for Long—Term Analysis, more frequently know as DPHEP, published a Blueprint report detailing the motivation for, problems with and situation of data preservation across all of the main HEP laboratories worldwide. In September of that year, an open workshop was held in Krakow to prepare an update to the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP) that was formally adopted by a special session of CERN’s Council in May 2013 in Brussels and key elements from the Blueprint were input to that discussion. A new update round to the ESPP has recently been launched and it is timely to consider the progress made since 2012/2013, list the outstanding problems and possible future directions for this work.

Abstract

In this paper we describe the services that are offered by CERN [3] for Long Term preservation of High Energy Physics (HEP) data, with the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) as a key use case. Data preservation is a strategic goal for European High Energy Physics (HEP) [9], as well as for the HEP community worldwide and we position our work in this global content. Specifically, we target the preservation of the scientific data, together with the software, documentation and computing environment needed to process, (re-)analyse or otherwise (re-)use the data. The target data volumes range from hundreds of petabytes (PB – 1015 bytes) to hundreds of exabytes (EB – 1018 bytes) for a target duration of several decades. The Use Cases driving data preservation are presented together with metrics that allow us to measure how close we are to meeting our goals, including the possibility for formal certification for at least part of this work. Almost all of the services that we describe are fully generic – the exception being Analysis Preservation that has some domain-specific aspects (where the basic technology could nonetheless be adapted).

Data preservation is a strategic goal for European High Energy Physics (HEP), as well as for the HEP community worldwide and we position our work in this global content. Specifically, we target the preservation of the scientific data, together with the software, documentation and computing environment needed to process, (re-)analyse or otherwise (re-)use the data. The target data volumes range from hundreds of petabytes (PB – 10^15 bytes) to hundreds of exabytes (EB – 10^18 bytes) for a target duration of several decades. The Use Cases driving data preservation are presented together with metrics that allow us to measure how close we are to meeting our goals, including the possibility for formal certification for at least part of this work. Almost all of the services that we describe are fully generic – the exception being Analysis Preservation that has some domain-specific aspects (where the basic technology could nonetheless be adapted).

This document describes the initial Data Management Plan (DMP) for the HNSciCloud project. It addresses Project administration data collected as part of the execution and management of the Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) process within the project as well as data used as part of the scientific use cases to be deployed on the cloud services. The DMP for the scientific use cases is based on the Guidelines on Data Management in the Horizon 2020 document version 2.0 of 30 October 2015. These guidelines state: “Participating projects will be required to develop a Data Management Plan (DMP), in which they will specify what data will be open.” As such, this DMP focuses primarily on data sharing and re-use and in particular on the following issues (Annex 1 of the H2020 DMP Guidelines): • What types of data will the project generate/collect? • What standards will be used? • How will this data be exploited and/or shared/made accessible for verification and re-use? An inter-experimental study group on HEP data preservation and long-term analysis was convened as a panel of the International Committee for Future Accelerators (ICFA). The group was formed by large collider-based experiments and investigated the technical and organisational aspects of HEP data preservation. An intermediate report was released in November 2009 addressing the general issues of data preservation in HEP. This paper includes and extends the intermediate report. It provides an analysis of the research case for data preservation and a detailed description of the various projects at experiment, laboratory and international levels. In addition, the paper provides a concrete proposal for an international organisation in charge of the data management and policies in high-energy physics. The IEEE Reference Model for Mass Storage Systems provides a basis for the develop­ment of standards for storage systems. The model identifies the high level abstractions that underlie modern storage systems. The model itself does not attempt to provide implementation specifications. Its main purpose is to permit the development of indi­vidual standards within a common framework. High Energy Physics has consistently been on the leading edge of technology and Mass Storage is no exception. This paper describes the IEEE MSS Reference model in the HEP context and examines how it could be used to help solve the data management problems of HEP. (Originally published in CERN Yellow Report 94-06), These are the notes from a series of lectures given at the 1993 CERN School of Computing. Abstract

Computing and software for big science 3(1), 7 (2019). doi:10.1007/s41781-018-0018-8, Particle physics has an ambitious and broad experimental programme for the coming decades. This programme requires large investments in detector hardware, either to build new facilities and experiments, or to upgrade existing ones. Similarly, it requires commensurate investment in the R&D of software to acquire, manage, process, and analyse the shear amounts of data to be recorded. In planning for the HL-LHC in particular, it is critical that all of the collaborating stakeholders agree on the software goals and priorities, and that the efforts complement each other.
