Intraoperative indocyanine green (ICG) cholangiography is a safe and useful navigation modality for confirming the biliary anatomy. ICG cholangiography is expected to be a routine method for helping avoid bile duct injuries.Patients and Methods: We examined 25 patients who underwent intraoperative cholangiography using ICG fluorescence. Two methods of ICG injection are used: intrabiliary injection (percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage [PTGBD], gallbladder [GB] puncture and endoscopic nasobiliary drainage [ENBD]) at a dosage of 0.025 mg during the operation or intravenous injection with 2.5 mg ICG preoperatively.Results: There were 24 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy and 1 patient who underwent hepatectomy. For laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the average operation time was 127 (50– 197) minutes, and estimated blood loss was 43.2 (0– 400) g. The ICG administration route was intravenous injections in 12 cases and intrabiliary injection in 12 cases (GB injection: 3 cases, PTGBD: 8 cases, ENBD:1 case). The course of the biliary tree was able to be confirmed in all cases that received direct injection into the biliary tract, whereas bile structures were recognizable in only 10 cases (83.3%) with intravenous injection. The postoperative hospital stay was 4.6 (3– 9) days, and no postoperative complications (Clavien–Dindo ≧IIIa) were observed. For hepatectomy, a tumor located near the left Glissonian pedicle was resected using a fluorescence image guide. Biliary structures were fluorescent without injury after resecting the tumor. No adverse events due to ICG administration were observed, and the procedure was able to be performed safely.Conclusion: ICG fluorescence imaging allows surgeons to visualize the course of the biliary tree in real time during cholecystectomy and hepatectomy. However, the biomechanical mechanism of efficacy has not been elucidated. This study aimed to address this challenge in subjects with knee pain, using a motion capture system. Methods: An open label study was conducted in 30 Japanese subjects with knee pain. The subjects were administered a daily supplement containing 1,200 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride, 60 mg of chondroitin sulfate, 45 mg of type II collagen peptides, 90 mg of quercetin glycosides, 10 mg of imidazole peptides, 1 mg of proteoglycan, and 5 µg of vitamin D (GCQID). The intervention continued for 16 weeks. Efficacy for locomotor functions involving the knee joint was evaluated mainly using the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure (JKOM) and the 5-question Geriatric Locomotive Function Scale (GLFS-5). To examine the biomechanical mechanism of efficacy for locomotor functions, motions of subjects in a normal walking state were captured. Gait analysis was conducted and efficacy for gait parameters such as normal walking speed, stride length, cadence, and angle of soles was evaluated. Results: GCQID significantly improved total scores on the JKOM and GLFS-5. In gait analysis, normal walking speed, stride length, and angle of soles at the end of the stance phase were all significantly increased, but cadence did not change significantly during the intervention period. There were significant intercorrelations of changes in normal walking speed, stride length, and angle of soles at the end of the stance phase, and between changes in stride length and total JKOM score. Conclusion: A GCQID supplement may increase walking speed through increased stride length and angle of kicking from the ground during steps, which might be mainly associated with alleviated knee pain. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of the two supplements containing 1) 1,200 mg of glucosamine hydrochloride, 60 mg of chondroitin sulfate, 45 mg of type II collagen peptides, 90 mg of quercetin glycosides, 10 mg of imidazole peptides, and 5 µg of vitamin D per day (GCQID group, n=50) or 2) a placebo (placebo group, n=50). Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure, visual analog scale score, normal walking speed, and knee-extensor strength were measured to evaluate the effects of the supplement on knee-joint functions and locomotor functions.Results: In subjects eligible for efficacy assessment, there was no significant group × time interaction, and there were improvements in knee-joint functions and locomotor functions in both groups, but there was no significant difference between the groups. In subjects with mild-to-severe knee pain at baseline, knee-extensor strength at week 8 (104.6±5.0% body weight vs 92.3±5.5% body weight, P=0.030) and the change in normal walking speed at week 16 (0.11±0.03 m/s vs 0.05±0.02 m/s, P=0.038) were significantly greater in the GCQID group than in the placebo group. Abstract

Oversight in medical images is a crucial problem, and timely reporting of medical images is desired. Therefore, an all-purpose anomaly detection method that can detect virtually all types of lesions/diseases in a given image is strongly desired. However, few commercially available and versatile anomaly detection methods for medical images have been provided so far. Recently, anomaly detection methods built upon deep learning methods have been rapidly growing in popularity, and these methods seem to provide reasonable solutions to the problem. However, the workload to label the images necessary for training in deep learning remains heavy. In this study, we present an anomaly detection method based on two trained flow-based generative models. With this method, the posterior probability can be computed as a normality metric for any given image. The training of the generative models requires two sets of images: a set containing only normal images and another set containing both normal and abnormal images without any labels. In the latter set, each sample does not have to be labeled as normal or abnormal; therefore, any mixture of images (e.g., all cases in a hospital) can be used as the dataset without cumbersome manual labeling. The method was validated with two types of medical images: chest X-ray radiographs (CXRs) and brain computed tomographies (BCTs). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for logarithm posterior probabilities of CXRs (0.868 for pneumonia-like opacities) and BCTs (0.904 for infarction) were comparable to those in previous studies with other anomaly detection methods. Abstract

The atmospheric monitoring is very important for the observation of air shower by air fluorescence technique. In the Telescope Array (TA) experiment, LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging) system and CLF (Central Laser Facility) system have been used for the measurement of atmospheric transparency. The LIDAR system is located in the southeast of TA site. The CLF is located in the center of the TA site. The usefulness of the CLF and LIDAR systems is demonstrated by analyzing the time variation of atmospheric transparency with the systems. The two atmospheric monitor systems are complementary. Therefore, monitoring efficiency is advanced by a new LIDAR system that was installed at CLF system. Clouds are observed with CCD camera, IR camera and eye scan visual check. In addition, we have also measured atmospheric parameters at the ground level using several weather systems.

Abstract

In association with a large solar flare on November 7, 2004, the solar neutron detectors located at Mt. Chacaltaya (5,250 m) in Bolivia and Mt. Sierra Negra (4,600 m) in Mexico recorded very interesting events. In order to explain these events, we have performed a calculation solving the equation of motion of anti-protons inside the magnetosphere. Based on these results, the Mt. Chacaltaya event may be explained by the detection of solar neutrons, while the Mt. Sierra Negra event may be explained by the first detection of very high energy solar neutron decay protons (SNDPs) around 6 GeV.

Abstract

We report the fabrication and photoresponse of 5 nm thick La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ nanostrip with a width of 100nm. The I-V characteristics of the nanostrip show a hysteresis and a sharp voltage jump at $I_{c}$. The $J_{c}$(3K) of the nanostrip is 2.3 x 10$^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$. The nanostrip exhibits photoresponse signals when illuminated by a pulse laser at 1560 nm wavelength with a bias current just below $I_{c}$. The height of the signal reduces as the optical intensity decreases and disappears below -10 dBm. The signal also decreases as the temperature increases, but it exists up to 30 K. These results suggest the possibility of La$_{1.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4}$ nanostrip as single-photon detector (SSPD, SNSPD) working at high temperature by further reducing the cross-section of the strip.

Abstract

Anthropogenically derived nitrogen (N) has a central role in global environmental changes, including climate change, biodiversity loss, air pollution, greenhouse gas emission, water pollution, as well as food production and human health. Current understanding of the biogeochemical processes that govern the N cycle in coupled human–ecological systems around the globe is drawn largely from the long-term ecological monitoring and experimental studies. Here, we review spatial and temporal patterns and trends in reactive N emissions, and the interactions between N and other important elements that dictate their delivery from terrestrial to aquatic ecosystems, and the impacts of N on biodiversity and human society. Integrated international and long-term collaborative studies covering research gaps will reduce uncertainties and promote further understanding of the nitrogen cycle in various ecosystems.

13. Superconducting nanowire single-photon detector with ultralow dark count rate using cold optical filters

Abstract

We report the fabrication of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SSPD or SNSPD) with an ultralow dark count rate. By introducing optical band-pass filters at the input of the SSPD and cooling the filters at 3 K, the dark count rate is reduced to less than 1/100 at low bias. An SSPD with 0.1 cps dark count rate and 5.6% system detection efficiency at 1550 nm wavelength is obtained. We show that a quantum key distribution (QKD) over 300 km of fiber is possible based on a numerical calculation assuming a differential phase shift QKD protocol implemented with our SSPDs.

Abstract

The c-axis transport properties of a high-pressure synthesized PrFeAsO0.7 single crystal are studied using s-shaped junctions. Resistivity anisotropy of about 120 detected at 50 K shows the presence of strong anisotropy in the electronic states. The obtained critical current density for the c-axis of 2.9*10^5 A/cm^2 is two orders of magnitude larger than that in Bi2Sr1.6La0.4CuO6+d. The appearance of a hysteresis in the current-voltage curve below T_c is the manifestation of the intrinsic Josephson effect similar to that in cuprate superconductors. The suppression of the critical current-normal resistance (I_cR_n) product is explained by an inspecular transport in s_pm-wave pair potential., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

Energy level quantization (ELQ) is studied to clarify the macroscopic quantum dynamics of the d-wave Josephson junction (JJ). The influences of the nodal quasiparticles of d-wave superconductivity on the damping effect are numerically evaluated on the basis of a phenomenological model. The calculation, based on realistic parameters for a Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d (Bi2212) intrinsic JJ, shows that the observation of ELQ is possible when the sweep rate of the bias current exceeds 10 A/sec. High-sweep- rate measurements (121A/sec) performed on a Bi2212 intrinsic JJ result in the appearance of multiple peaks in the switching current distribution suggesting the realization of ELQ in the d-wave JJ., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

The switching dynamics of current-biased Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+\delta}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions (IJJs) was studied to clarify the effect of d-wave superconductivity and the stack structure on the switching properties. High quality IJJs were fabricated, and then the temperature dependence of the switching probability distribution was measured for the first and second switchings. Although the standard deviation of the distribution detected for both switchings showed similar saturation characteristics with decreasing temperature, the temperature at saturation was about 13 times higher for the second switching than for the first switching. The properties of the first switching can be explained in terms of a conventional underdamped JJ, that is, macroscopic quantum tunneling below the crossover temperature, and thermal activation with quality factor of 70$\pm$20 above the crossover temperature. In contrast, the relatively higher effective temperature for the second switching evaluated from the switching probability distribution suggests a dominant thermal activation process under the influence of the self-heating effect even at sufficiently low temperature., Comment: 10pages, 7figures, will be published for Journal of the Physical Society of Japan (JPSJ)

Abstract

T'-RE2CuO4 (RE: rare-earth element), after appropriate "reduction", has fairly high conductivity and also exhibits clear Fermi edge in photoemission spectroscopy. To clarify the origin of conductivity in the T' mother compounds, we evaluated the unscreened charge-transfer gap for T'-RE2CuO4 and T-La2CuO4. The value of charge-transfer gap for T'-compounds almost linearly decreases with increasing the ionic radius of RE from 12.24 eV for T'-Tm2CuO4 to 9.90 eV for T'-La2CuO4. Abstract

Josephson plasma in RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$, Ru$_{1-x}$Sr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2+x}$O$_{8}$ (x = 0.3), and RuSr$_{2}$Eu$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$Cu$_{2}$O$_{10}$ (x = 0.5) compounds is investigated by the sphere resonance method. The Josephson plasma is observed in a low-frequency region (around 8.5 cm$^{-1}$ at T $\ll$ $T_{c}$) for ferromagnetic RuSr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2}$O$_{8}$, while it increases to 35 cm$^{-1}$ for non-ferromagnetic Ru$_{1-x}$Sr$_{2}$GdCu$_{2+x}$O$_{8}$ (x = 0.3), which represents a large reduction in the Josephson coupling at ferromagnetic RuO$_{2}$ block layers. The temperature dependence of the plasma does not shift to zero frequency ({\it i.e.} $j_{c}$ = 0) at low temperatures, indicating that there is no transition from the 0-phase to the $\pi$-phase in these compounds. The temperature dependence and the oscillator strength of the peak are different from those of other non-magnetic cuprates, and the origins of these anomalies are discussed., Comment: to appear in Phys. Abstract

The development of high-performance solar cells offers a promising pathway toward achieving high power per unit cost for many applications. As single-junction solar cells are limited to 30-32% conversion efficiency under 1-sun, multi-junction or tandem solar cells are expected to contribute to higher performances. The II-VI compound, chalcopyrite, and kesterite-based tandem solar cells are expected as high-efficiency and low-cost solar cells. This paper presents analytical results for efficiency potential and loss elements of II-VI compound, chalcopyrite, and kesterite-based tandem solar cells. The 2-junction and 3-junction tandem solar cells have potential efficiencies of 36% and 42%, respectively, by improving external radiative efficiency and reducing resistance and optical losses. Some paths for improving efficiencies of tandem solar cells are shown by analyzing their loss elements. Optimization of band-gap energy of sub-cells and photon recycling are also recommended.

Abstract

The effect of alumina addition on the viscosity of xilicate melts is strongly related to the type of non-framework cations; however. the origin of these interactions is not well understood. In this study. we measured the viscosity change in selected alkali disilicate (R2O·2SiO2, R: Na or Li) melts by varying the AlO1.5 :/SiO2 molar ratio (AlO1.5 = 0-16.8 molf) within the 1373-1 823 K temperature range. We observed that ax the molar ratio increased, sodium silicate viscosity increased, whereas lithium silicate viscosity was not affected. Aluminum-27 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the quenched glasses indicated that the aluminum cations in both types of alkali silicate melts were mostly present as AIO4tetrahedra. In contrast to sodium-containing systems. the shear strain on the AIO4 tetrahedron was greater for lithium aluminosilicate glass. Our findings indicated that the degree of shear strain on AIO4 plays an essential role in controlling the viscosity of aluminosilicate systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
