All-optical switching increasingly plays an important role in optical information processing. However, simultaneous achievement of ultralow power consumption, broad bandwidth and high extinction ratio remains challenging. We experimentally demonstrate an ultralow-power all-optical switching by exploiting chiral interaction between light and optically active material in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI). We achieve switching extinction ratio of 20.0(3.8) and 14.7(2.8) dB with power cost of 66.1(0.7) and 1.3(0.1) fJ/bit, respectively. The bandwidth of our all-optical switching is about 4.2 GHz. Our theoretical analysis shows that the switching bandwidth can, in principle, exceed 110 GHz. Moreover, the switching has the potential to be operated at few-photon level. Our all-optical switching exploits a chiral MZI made of linear optical components. It excludes the requisite of high-quality optical cavity or large optical nonlinearity, thus greatly simplifying realization. Actuators mimic the unique motion of bacteria, which are realized by self-organizing photoresponsive cholesteric liquid crystals., Rotation-translation conversion is a popular way to achieve power transmission in machinery, but it is rarely selected by nature. One unique case is that of bacteria swimming, which is based on the collective reorganization and rotation of flagella. Here, we mimic such motion using the light-driven evolution of a self-organized periodic arch pattern. The range and direction of translation are altered by separately varying the alignment period and the stimulating photon energy. Programmable self-propelling actuators are realized via a specific molecular assembly within a photoresponsive cholesteric medium. Through rationally presetting alignments, parallel transports of microspheres in customized trajectories are demonstrated, including convergence, divergence, gathering, and orbital revolution. This work extends the understanding of the rotation-translation conversion performed in an exquisitely self-organized system and may inspire future designs for functional materials and intelligent robotics.

Metalenses are developing fast towards versatile and integrated terahertz (THz) apparatuses, while tunable ones are highly pursued. Here, we propose a strategy that integrates dielectric metasurfaces with liquid crystals (LCs) to realize the dynamic focal spot manipulation. The silicon pillar meta-units of the metasurface are properly selected to generate different phase profiles for two orthogonal linear polarizations, permitting a laterally or axially altered focal spot. After LCs integrated, polarization-multiplexed focusing can be achieved via electrically varying the LC orientations. We demonstrate two metalenses with distinct functions. For the first one, the uniformly aligned LC works as a polarization converter, and further switches the focal length by altering the bias. For the second one, an LC polarization grating is utilized for rear spin-selective beam deflection. Consequently, a THz port selector is presented. This work supplies a promising method towards active THz elements, which may be widely applied in THz sensing, imaging, and communication.

Geometric phases have attracted considerable attention in recent years, due to their capability of arbitrary beam shaping in a most efficient and compact way, while traditional geometric phases are usually limited to handling single-structured beams and lack the capability of parallel manipulation. Here, we propose a digitalized geometric phase enabling parallel optical spin and orbital angular momentum encoding. The concept is demonstrated in inhomogeneous anisotropic media by imprinting a particularly designed binary phase into a space-variant geometric phase. We theoretically analyze its spin–orbit interaction of light and experimentally created higher-order Poincare sphere beam lattices, the order number and symmetry of which can be flexibly manipulated. To analyze the hematological characteristics of HbE homozygotes.Complete blood cells count and hemoglobin electrophoresis were used for phenotypic analysis of 78 cases with HbE homozygotes from Yunnan province, China. The PCR-fluorescence hybridization was used to detect the common gene mutation of thalassemia. The hematological indexes, including MCV, MCH, Hb, HbA2, HbF and HbE were statistically analyzed between groups with different sex, ages and compound α thalassemia status.In HbE homozygotes (HbEE), 89.5% (17/19) children presented mild to moderate microcytic hypochromic anemia, and 10.5% of them presented moderate anemia. 39.6% (19/48) of women with HbEE developed mild anemia ,while 11 cases of male with HbE homozygotes were asymptomatic. The levels of MCV and MCH in HbE homozygotes increased by co-inheritance of α thalassemia mutation.The clinical phenotype of HbE homozygote shows highly heterogeneous, which is relates with age, sex and co-inheriting α-globin genotypes. In Hb EE women and children are more likely to develop mild to moderate anemia. Active planar optical devices that can dynamically manipulate light are highly sought after in modern optics and nanophotonics. The geometric phase derived from the photonic spin-orbit interaction provides an integrated strategy. Corresponding elements usually suffer from static functions. Here, we introduce an inhomogeneously self-organized anisotropic medium featured by photo-invertible chiral superstructure to realize geometric phase elements with continuously tunable working spectrum and light-flipped phase profile. Via preprograming the alignment of a cholesteric liquid crystal mixed with a photo-responsive chiral dopant, we demonstrate light-activated deflector, lens, Airy beam and optical vortex generators. Their polychromatic working bands are reversibly tuned in an ultra-broadband over 1000 nm covering green to telecomm region. The chirality inversion triggers facile switching of functionalities, such as beam steering, focusing/defocusing and spin-to-orbital angular momentum conversion. This work offers a platform for advanced adaptive and multifunctional flat optics with merits of high compactness, low loss and broad bandwidth., Optically reconfigurable elements are in demand for future applications. The authors report on the use of chirality-invertible cholesteric liquid crystals to actively manipulate geometric phase and create switchable planar optics elements that perform a variety of functions.

We propose and demonstrate an active spin-selected lens with liquid crystal (LC) in the terahertz (THz) range. The lens is a superposition of two geometric phase lenses with separate centers and conjugated phase profiles. Its digitalized multidirectional LC orientations are realized via a dynamic micro-lithography-based photo-patterning technique and sandwiched by two graphene-electrode-covered silica substrates. The specific lens can separate the focusing spots of incident light with opposite circular polarizations. Its focusing performance from 0.8 to 1.2 THz is characterized using a scanning near-field THz microscope system. The polarization conversion efficiency varies from 32.1% to 70.2% in this band. The spin-selected focusing functions match well with numerical simulations. Such lens exhibits the merit of dynamic functions, low insertion loss and broadband applicability. It may inspire various practical THz apparatuses.

In this paper, we propose a tunable dielectric metamaterial absorber in the terahertz (THz) range. The absorber is composed of a silicon pillar array embedded in a liquid crystal (LC) layer, which is sandwiched by two graphene electrodes. By way of varying the applied bias, the LC orientation can be continuously tuned. At a saturated bias, all LCs are vertically driven, and an absorption peak of 0.86 is achieved at 0.79 THz. When the bias is turned off, the same LCs are horizontally aligned, and the absorption peak degenerates into two smaller ones. A 47% modulation depth at 0.79 THz is obtained via numerical simulation with experimental feasibility considered. Such an active THz dielectric absorber may be utilized as part of various active THz apparatuses in THz imaging, sensing, switching, and filtering.

Featuring a nontrivial coupling between the orbital angular momentum of light and spatially inhomogeneous polarization, hybrid-order Poincare sphere (HyOPS) beams have recently triggered numerous curiosities, especially in classical and quantum informatics. Despite much effort devoted to creating single HyOPS beam, it is still a formidable challenge to simultaneously harness multichannel and diverse HyOPS beams in a simple and efficient manner. Here, we propose a digitalized geometric phase optical element via photo-induced liquid crystal microstructures and demonstrate flexible and spin-controlled massive channels of HyOPS beams. By tuning the incident polarization, any state on up to 24 diverse HyOPSs is simultaneously mapped from common Poincare sphere in high efficiency and good energy uniformity. All experimental results match well with the theoretical predictions of such a planar multifunctional device. This adds an extra spatial degree of freedom to advanced light tailoring and may facilitate parallel optical trapping, high-capacity communication, and high-dimensional quantum entanglement.

The coding metasurface integrated with tunable materials offers an attractive alternative to manipulate the THz beam dynamically. In this work, we demonstrate a THz programmable metasurface based on liquid crystal. The phase profile on the metasurface could be dynamically manipulated by switching the “0” and “1” states of each element. The programmable metasurface could deflect the THz beam using the designed coding sequence, and a maximum deflection angle of 32° has been achieved. The presented design opens a route of beamforming for THz communication.

The higher-order Poincare (HOP) sphere beam generalizes optical vortices and vector beams, vividly illustrating their higher-order polarization states. However, its doughnutlike intensity profile varies significantly with topological charge, restricting its application in optics. The authors study a perfect HOP sphere, whose annular intensity profile is $i\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}d\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}e\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}p\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}e\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}d\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}e\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}n\phantom{\rule{0}{0ex}}t$ of topological charge. Single- and multiringed beams are produced in anisotropic medium, by exploiting a spiral geometric phase and aptly designed gratings. This work provides an exciting technique for manipulating the angular momentum of light, to improve $e.g.$ optical tweezers, or multiplexing in optical communication.

We propose and demonstrate a pseudo Fabry–Perot filter in the terahertz frequency range of 0.1–0.5 THz. It consists of alternative liquid crystal layers and metallic slats. Separate sharp resonant peaks are shown in the simulated transmission spectra, and their positions shift toward higher frequencies when the refractive index of liquid crystal decreases. The measured transmission spectra are consistent with corresponding simulations. Via thermally tuning the refractive index of the filled liquid crystal, the resonant transmission frequencies shift accordingly. The work supplies a novel design for tunable terahertz filters, which would play important roles in terahertz imaging, sensing, high speed communication, and security applications.

Cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) chiral superstructures exhibit unique features; that is, polychromatic and spin-determined phase modulation. Here, a concept for digitalized chiral superstructures is proposed, which further enables the arbitrary manipulation of reflective geometric phase and may significantly upgrade existing optical apparatus. By encoding a specifically designed binary pattern, an innovative CLC optical vortex (OV) processor is demonstrated. Up to 25 different OVs are extracted with equal efficiency over a wavelength range of 116 nm. The multiplexed OVs can be detected simultaneously without mode crosstalk or distortion, permitting a polychromatic, large-capacity, and in situ method for parallel OV processing. Such complex but easily fabricated self-assembled chiral superstructures exhibit versatile functionalities, and provide a satisfactory platform for OV manipulation and other cutting-edge territories. This work is a vital step towards extending the fundamental understanding and fantastic applications of ordered soft matter.

A terahertz (THz) q-plate is proposed and demonstrated to generate THz vortex beams. It is composed of a large birefringence liquid crystal (LC) with spatially-varying director distribution sandwiched by two pieces of fused silica glass. A polarization-sensitive alignment agent is photopatterned to carry out the specific LC director distribution. THz vortex beams with different topological charges are characterized with a THz digital holographic imaging system. The intensity and phase distributions consistent with theoretical analyses are obtained. Besides, an eight-lobed intensity distribution is observed corresponding to the vertical polarization component of a cylindrical vector beam. This work may inspire novel THz applications.

Using an optical microfiber coupler (MC), we present a microfluidic platform for strong direct or indirect light-liquid interaction by wrapping a MC around a functionalized capillary. The light propagating in the MC and the liquid flowing in the capillary can be combined and divorced smoothly, keeping a long-distance interaction without the conflict of input and output coupling. Using this approach, we experimentally demonstrate a "hot-wire" microfluidic flowmeter based on a gold-integrated helical MC device. The microfluid inside the glass channel takes away the heat, then cools the MC and shifts the resonant wavelength. Due to the long-distance interaction and high temperature sensitivity, the proposed microfluidic flowmeter shows an ultrahigh flow rate sensitivity of 2.183 nm/(μl/s) at a flow rate of 1 μl/s. The minimum detectable change of the flow rate is around 9 nl/s at 1 μl/s.

The active tuning of Fano resonance further extends their applications to switching and filtering. Here, we propose a dynamic Fano cloaking in a liquid crystal (LC) integrated THz metasurface. The metasurface is composed of two-gap asymmetric split rings. Its Fano resonance is intensively dependent on the incident polarization. The Fano resonance occurs when illuminated by THz waves with polarization perpendicular to the gaps, while for parallel polarization, the Fano resonance vanishes, namely, the cloaking of Fano resonators. A 250-μm-thick LC layer functions as an integrated tunable polarization converter. Thus, the device can be electrically switched between the sharp Fano state and the high-transmission state. The modulation depth reaches over 50% in a broad frequency range of 660 GHz. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of light can be exploited for applications, particularly in high-speed optical communication, and quantum information processing. The authors design and build a liquid-crystal Dammann vortex grating, which can generate a series of equal-energy OAM beams. This technology presents excellent polarization independence, electrical switchability, and tunability, and is promising for OAM generation, manipulation, and detection.

Researches on Airy beams have grown explosively since the first demonstration in 2007 due to the distinguishing properties of nondiffraction, transverse acceleration and self-healing. To date, a simple and compact approach for generating Airy beams in high quality and efficiency has remained challenging. Here, we propose and demonstrate a liquid crystal (LC) polarization Airy mask (PAM) featured by spatially variant LC azimuthal director. The PAM is fabricated through photoaligning LC via a polarization-sensitive alignment agent suophonic azo dye SD1. Thanks to the special design, a novel feature of polarization-controllable switch between dual Airy beams of orthogonal circular polarization is presented. The molecular-level continuity of LC director significantly improves the quality and efficiency of resultant Airy beams. Besides, the PAM can handle intense light due to the absence of absorptive electrodes. Additional merits of compact size, low cost and broad wavelength tolerance are also exhibited. This work settles a fundamental requirement for Airy beam applications of optical manipulations, biology science and even some uncharted territories.

Active terahertz elements with multifunction are highly expected in security screening, nondestructive evaluation, and wireless communications. Here, we propose an innovative terahertz metadevice that exhibits distinguishing functions for transmitted and reflected waves. The device is composed of a thin liquid crystal layer sandwiched by Au comb electrodes and a dual-ring resonator array. For transmission mode, the metadevice manifests the electromagnetically induced transparency analog. For reflection mode, it works as a perfect absorber. The comb electrodes actuate the in-plane switching of liquid crystals, making the metadevice actively tuned. 60 GHz frequency tuning of an electromagnetically induced transparency analog and 15% modulation depth of the absorption are demonstrated. Such modulations can be realized in the millisecond scale. The in-plane switching driving mode avoids the electrode connections among separate resonators, thus freeing the design of the metadevice. The proposed work may pave a bright road towards various active multifunctional terahertz apparatuses.

Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the geographic distribution of β-globin gene mutations in different ethnic groups in Yunnan province. Methods From 2004 to 2014, 1,441 subjects with hemoglobin disorders, identified by PCR-reverse dot blot and DNA sequencing, were studied according to ethnicity and geographic origin. Haplotypes were examined among 41 unrelated thalassemia chromosomes. Results Eighteen β-thalassemia mutations and seven hemoglobin variants were identified for 1,616 alleles in 22 different ethnic groups from all 16 prefecture-level divisions of Yunnan. The prevalence of β-thalassemia was heterogeneous and regionally specific. CD 41-42 (-TCTT) was the most prevalent mutation in the populations of northeastern Yunnan. CD 17 (A>T) was the most common mutation in the populations of southeastern Yunnan, especially for the Zhuang minority, whereas Hb E (CD 26, G>A) was the most prevalent mutation in populations of southwestern Yunnan, especially for the Dai minority. Among the seven types of haplotypes identified, CD 17 (A>T) was mainly linked to haplotype VII (+ - - - - - +) and IVS-II-654 (C>T) was only linked to haplotype I (+ - - - - + +). Conclusion Our data underline the heterogeneity of β-globin gene mutations in Yunnan. This distribution of β-globin mutations in the geographic regions and ethnic populations provided a detailed ethnic basis and evolutionary view of humans in southern China, which will be beneficial for genetic counseling and prevention strategies.

A liquid crystal forked vortex lens integrated with Pancharatnam-Berry phase is proposed and demonstrated via a dynamic photo-patterning technique. The forked vortex lens can generate two optical vortices with opposite spin and orbital angular momentum, which are spatially separated to two focal points with one optical vortex focused and the other defocused. It exhibits distinctive helicity-dependency and ultra-high diffraction efficiency up to 95%. The topological charges of generated optical vortices are detected via astigmatic transformation. This work supplies an easy fabrication and low power consumption strategy for generating and separating (de-)focused optical vortices simultaneously.

Tunable liquid crystal devices that can change terahertz wave polarization continuously have many potential applications in terahertz optical systems. We present a reflective liquid crystal terahertz waveplate with sub-wavelength metal grating and metal ground plane electrodes. The thickness of the liquid crystal layer can be reduced to ~10% of that needed for the same phase shift at a given frequency in a transmissive waveplate. We experimentally demonstrate the same tunability as in the transmissive type just using half the thickness. We discuss the dependence on the angle of incidence for phase shift tunability, which can achieve beam steering and polarization conversion simultaneously. The proposed design can be applied in terahertz imaging, sensing, and communications.

Hierarchical architecture is of vital importance in soft materials. Focal conic domains (FCDs) of smectic liquid crystals, characterized by an ordered lamellar structure, attract intensive attention. Simultaneously tailoring the geometry and clustering characteristics of FCDs remains a challenge. Here, the 3D smectic layer origami via a 2D preprogrammed photoalignment film is accomplished. Full control of hierarchical superstructures is demonstrated, including the domain size, shape, and orientation, and the lattice symmetry of fragmented toric FCDs. The unique symmetry breaking of resultant superstructures combined with the optical anisotropy of the liquid crystals induces an intriguing polarization-dependent diffraction. This work broadens the scientific understanding of self-assembled soft materials and may inspire new opportunities for advanced functional materials and devices.

Electro-optical properties of liquid crystal (LC) gratings with alternate twisted nematic (TN) and planar aligned (PA) regions are simulated. Three typical steps are introduced: first, the LC director distributions of the two different regions are simulated. Then, the phase and amplitude of the emergent light in each region are calculated through Jones matrix. Based on this information, the voltage-dependent diffraction efficiency is achieved by Fourier transformation, finally. It gives an exact explanation for the mechanism of this kind of gratings. Experiments with optimized parameters are carried out through photopatterning. The trend of the measured voltage-dependent efficiency fits the simulation result very well. This method can be used to optimize the performance of LC gratings with alternate TN and PA regions, and exhibits great potential in the simulation of corresponding photonics and display applications.

The refractive indices of ordinary and extraordinary waves (no and ne) of congruent LiNbO3 (CLN) in the terahertz (THz) band are measured at different temperatures. Extended Cauchy equations are proposed to describe the temperature- and frequency-dependent refractive indices. With less than 0.5% deviation, both no and ne can be obtained accurately. The values of no and ne are ~7 and ~5.4, respectively, which are much larger than those in the visible band. The extremely high birefringence (~1.6) may lead to some interesting applications of linear, electro-optic, and nonlinear optical effects of CLN. As an example, true zero-order THz waveplates (WPs) could be obtained with considerable low loss based on thin CLN wafers. The working frequency can be tuned by changing the environmental temperature. Moreover, wide bandwidth achromatic THz WPs were also achievable by stacking four CLN wafers together with precise orientation control.

The kinetic constants (k) and activation energy (Ea) for the formation (k1, Ea1) and reversion (k-1, Ea-1) of the Schiff base complex and for the Amadori rearrangement (k2, Ea2) of the Maillard reaction were determined in a phenylalanine−glucose system to elucidate its early-stage mechanism. The k-1 and k2 were 103 times greater than the k1, indicating the Schiff base formation, but not the Amadori rearrangement, was the rate-limiting step of the reaction. The Ea2 (8.01 × 104 kcal/mol) was slightly greater than the Ea1 (6.52 × 104 kcal/mol) and the Ea-1 (7.49 × 104 kcal/mol), revealing that the Amadori rearrangement was more sensitive to temperature changes and was more favorable at higher temperatures. These suggested that the chemical nature of the reactants, determined by their structures and pH condition, is more important to control the reaction. The practical application of exopeptidase has been limited by the high cost of the enzymes resulting from the low content of individual exopeptidase in the raw material. This can be overcome by the use of a combination of all the exopeptidases in the same enzyme source, as well as the use of the enzyme immobilization technology. A porcine pancreatic exopeptidase mixture was prepared by the ammonium sulfate precipitation at 35% saturation of the autolyzed pancreatic juice. The enzyme preparation was immobilized on thin shrimp chitin film by crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. The immobilized porcine pancreatic exopeptidases (IPPE) was effective in releasing the free amino acids from peptides. Of these amino acids, the concentrations of arginine, lysine, histidine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, leucine, and glutamine were increased much more than those of other amino acids. This indicated that both the porcine pancreatic exopeptidases preparation and the IPPE contained carboxypeptidase A, B, and aminopeptidase. The IPPE was also efficient in the decrease of the hydrophobicity of protein hydrolysates demonstrated by hydrophobic chromatographic analysis. This led to the application of the immobilized exopeptidases in protein hydrolysate debittering. The IPPE was able to remove the bitterness of the tryptic/chymotryptic casein hydrolysates.

An effective HPLC method was developed to separate and determine the phenylalanine, tryptophan, and tyrosine Amadori compounds in Maillard reaction mixtures. Using ammonium hydroxide as a major eluent component, the Maillard reaction mixtures of aromatic amino acid and glucose were separated in high resolution on an anion exchange column CarboPac PA-1. Aromatic amino acids and their Amadori compounds were determined by a UV detector at 260 nm. Glucose can be determined by a pulsed amperometric detector with the potentials and durations of E1 = 0.05 V (t = 360 ms) and E2 = 0.60 V (t = 120 ms). The effective gradient program was to increase the content of 0.5 mol/L sodium acetate from 0 to 100% in the 0.1 mol/L ammonium hydroxide solution. The separation was based on the acidity differences between the amino acid residues of amino acid and its Amadori compound. Self-healing and transverse accelerating optical vortices are generated via modulating Gaussian beams through subsequent liquid crystal q-plate and polarization Airy mask. We analyze the propagation dynamics of these vortex Airy beams, and find that they possess the features of both optical vortices and Airy beams. Topological charges and characteristics of nondiffraction, self-healing, and transverse acceleration are experimentally verified. In addition, vortex Airy beams with both topological charge and radial index are demonstrated and mode switch among Gaussian, vortex, vector, Airy beams and their combinations can be acquired easily. Our design provides a flexible and highly efficient way to generate unique optical vortices with self-healing and transverse acceleration properties, and facilitates prospective applications in optics and photonics.

Metamaterial-based absorbers play a significant role in applications ranging from energy harvesting and thermal emitters to sensors and imaging devices. The middle dielectric layer of conventional metamaterial absorbers has always been solid. Researchers could not detect the near field distribution in this layer or utilize it effectively. Here, we use anisotropic liquid crystal as the dielectric layer to realize electrically fast tunable terahertz metamaterial absorbers. We demonstrate strong, position-dependent terahertz near-field enhancement with sub-wavelength resolution inside the metamaterial absorber. We measure the terahertz far-field absorption as the driving voltage increases. By combining experimental results with liquid crystal simulations, we verify the near-field distribution in the middle layer indirectly and bridge the near-field and far-field observations. Our work opens new opportunities for creating high-performance, fast, tunable, terahertz metamaterial devices that can be applied in biological imaging and sensing.

We propose a depolarizer based on the principle of a collection of half-wave plates with randomly distributed optic axes. The design is demonstrated by means of dynamically photopatterning liquid crystal into randomly aligned homogeneous domains. We characterize the liquid crystal depolarizer for 1550 nm and C-band (1520–1610 nm). A degree of polarization of less than 5% is obtained for any linearly polarized light. This study provides a practical candidate for high-performance depolarizers.

Blue phase liquid crystal Dammann grating is demonstrated as an optical array generator. The phase profile is formed by the alternation of isotropic refractive index and vertical field induced ordinary index. Periodical Dammann grating can generate equal energy distributed optical array. When forked dislocations are introduced, multiple optical vortex beams with different topological charges are generated. This approach supplies a novel design for fast-response optical array generator, which has great potentials in array illumination, beam shaping and optical communications.

A dual-frequency liquid crystal polarization grating is fabricated by photoalignment and demonstrated as an optical switch. A high diffraction efficiency up to 95% is obtained for a single first order with circular incident polarization. Via merely alternating the frequency of applied electric field, the switch On and Off time reach 350 μs and 550 μs, respectively. This work supplies a new design for fast-response and high-efficiency optical switch with the merits of easy fabrication and low power consumption.

An in-line, all-optical fiber modulator based on a stereo graphene–microfiber structure (GMF) utilizing the lab-on-rod technique was demonstrated in this study. Owing to its unique spring-like geometry, an ultra-long GMF interaction can be achieved, and a modulation depth of ∼7.5 dB (∼2.5 dB) and a modulation efficiency of ∼0.2 dB mW−1 (∼0.07 dB mW−1) were demonstrated for two polarization states. The modulation depth and modulation efficiency are more than one order of magnitude larger than those of other graphene–microfiber hybrid all-optical modulators, although at the cost of a higher insertion loss. By further optimizing the transferring and cleaning process, the upper limit of the modulation depth is mainly determined by the loss from the intrinsic absorption, which depends on the light–graphene interaction. Then, the modulator can quickly switch between the on-state and the off-state with a theoretically maximized modulation depth of tens of decibels. This modulator is compatible with the current fiber-optic communication systems and may be applied in the near future to meet the impending need for ultrafast optical signal processing. A polarization-sensitive all-optical fiber modulator based on a graphene–microfiber structure has been demonstrated by researchers in China. All-optical modulators with high modulation speeds, sufficient modulation depth and wide optical bandwidth are needed to realize ultrafast optical signal processing. Now, Fei Xu and co-workers at Nanjing University have fabricated an all-optical fiber modulator whose modulation depth and efficiency are more than ten times greater than previous all-optical modulators based on graphene and microfibers. These properties originate from its very long interaction length resulting from its spring-like geometry. The researchers consider that even better performance can be achieved by using higher quality graphene and improving the transfer and wrapping of the graphene in the fabrication process. Since the modulator is compatible with existing fiber-optic communication systems, it may find rapid application for ultrafast optical signal processing.
