As the penetration of renewable energy increases, the distribution grid faces great challenges in integrating large amounts of distributed energy sources and dealing with their output uncertainty. To address this, a multi-time scale optimal dispatch method based on model predictive control is proposed, including a day-ahead stage and an intra-day rolling stage. In the day-ahead stage, to fully utilize the flexibility of variable speed pumped storage hydropower, the generating/pumping phase modulation condition is considered, not just generating or pumping. Day-ahead optimal dispatch is established with the objective of minimizing the operation economy and node voltage deviation of the distribution network. In the intra-day rolling stage, model predictive control with finite time domain rolling optimal dispatch is used to replace the traditional single-time section optimal dispatch, considering the forecast data of wind, photovoltaic (PV), and load within the finite time domain, so that can respond in advance to smooth the generator output. At the same time, the uncertainty problem of the distribution network is solved effectively by rolling optimization and feedback correction of model predictive control. In order to consider the daily operating capacity balance of energy storage in the intra-day stage, the capacity imbalance penalty is added to the intra-day rolling optimization objective function, so that the energy storage capacity tries to track the results of the day-ahead optimization, achieving the long-term development of energy storage. Simulation analysis proves the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. As the penetration rate of clean energy gradually increases, the demand for flexible regulation resources in the power grid is increasing accordingly. The variable-speed pumped storage unit with a full-size converter (FSC-VSPSU) can provide fast and flexible regulation resources for the power grid, which assists in the stable operation of the clean-energy-dominated power systems. Thus, its application is gradually becoming widespread. FSC-VSPSU relies on the power electronic converter for grid connection. When the impedance mismatch between FSC-VSPSU and the power grid occurs, the grid-connected system will experience oscillations, which seriously threatens its safe and stable operation. Aiming at this, this article firstly relies on the SISO impedance measurement and an equivalent impedance analysis to obtain the stability analysis criterion. Furthermore, applying the impedance matching analysis with the Bode diagram, the influence rules of the parameters of the grid-connected FSC-VSPSU on oscillation are obtained. In addition, with the summarized oscillation analysis results, this study delves into an exploration of pertinent strategies for oscillation suppression. Finally, a grid-connected FSC-VSPSU simulation model is built in MATLAB/SIMULINK, and the simulation results verify the correctness of the oscillation analysis results and the effectiveness of the proposed oscillation suppression strategy. The ultra‐low frequency oscillation (ULFO) imposes an emerging stability challenge to the high proportion of hydropower grids. To suppress ULFO without reducing the primary frequency regulation of the hydro governor, a novel idea to exploit the voltage regulation effect of load is implemented. First, the additional damping controller is designed and configured in static var compensator (SVC), and the frequency analysis model considering the configuration of SVC as well as damping controller is established. Based on the model, the specific influence of SVC and controller on ULFO is analysed through eigenvalue calculation. In addition, the influence of various load models and SVC location on the damping level are further studied. Consequently, a parameter optimization design method for SVC additional damping control is proposed, it is modelled as the optimization problem of damping ratio in ULFO mode under multi‐operation conditions, which is solved by a particle swarm optimization algorithm. Fault ride-through is a prerequisite for ensuring continuous operation of a variable-speed pumped storage unit with a full-size converter (FSC-VSPU) and providing support for the renewable energy and power grid. This paper proposes low-voltage ride through (LVRT) and high-voltage ride through (HVRT) strategies for FSC-VSPU to address this issue. Firstly, the structure of FSC-VSPU and its control strategy under power generation and pumping conditions are described. Subsequently, the fault characteristics of the FSC-VSPU under different operating conditions are analyzed. More stringent fault ride-through technical requirements than those for wind turbines are proposed. On this basis, the fault ride-through strategies of combining fast power drop, rotor energy storage control, power anti-regulation control, dynamic reactive current control, low power protection, and DC crowbar circuit are proposed. Subsynchronous oscillation (SSO) is the resonance between a new energy generator set and a weak power grid, and the resonance frequency is usually the sub-/super-synchronous frequency. The eigensystem realization algorithm (ERA) is a classic algorithm for extracting modal parameters based on matrix decomposition. By leveraging the ERA's simplicity and low computational cost, an enhanced methodology for identifying the key parameters of SSO is introduced. The enhanced algorithm realizes SSO angular frequency extraction by constructing an angular frequency fitting equation, enabling efficient identification of SSO parameters using only a 200 ms synchrophasor sequence. In the process of identification, the fitting-based ERA effectively addresses the limitation of the existing ERA. The accuracy of SSO parameter identification is improved, thereby realizing that SSO parameter identification can be carried out using a 200 ms data window. The fitting-based ERA is verified using synthetic and actual data from synchrophasor measurement terminals. The research results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately extract fundamental and subsynchronous or supersynchronous oscillation parameters, effectively realizing dynamic real-time monitoring of subsynchronous oscillations. Conventional grid-forming control often destabilizes voltage source converters (VSCs) in stiff grids, and transient synchronization instability will occur in the grid fault condition. Therefore, power self-synchronization control (PSSC) is first introduced for enhancing the small-signal stability of grid-forming control in the case of a short circuit ratio ranging from 1 to infinity. Meanwhile, the transient synchronization instability for the grid-forming converter with PSSC in the grid fault condition is analyzed by the phase portrait, and a transient stability enhancement control (TSEC) scheme is combined with a PSSC-based VSC, which can efficiently eliminate the risk of losing synchronization in the arbitrary SCR. Variable-speed pumped storage has the advantages of flexible adjustment and low economic cost, which can reduce the adverse effects caused by a high proportion of new energy access. In order to reduce the system operation risk caused by the randomness of new energy output, a distribution robust optimization method for an active distribution network with variable-speed pumped storage is proposed. Firstly, considering the probability distribution uncertainty of wind–solar prediction error, a two-stage distributed robust optimization model of an active distribution network is constructed with the sum of day-ahead operating cost, intra-day adjustment cost expectation and conditional value-at-risk as the objective function. Then, the probability distribution fuzzy set is constructed based on the norm distance, and the fuzzy set boundary is determined by a data-driven method. Finally, the model is transformed into a mixed integer second-order cone optimization model by a linearization method and duality theory, and verified by an example. The results show that the proposed model can effectively reduce the operation risk caused by the uncertainty of operating cost and wind–solar output and reduce the operational costs and the risks associated with uncertainty in wind and solar power output. The interline power flow controller (IPFC) based on a modular multilevel converter with a half-bridge configuration can control the active and reactive power flows of multiple alternating current (AC) lines. However, it forms a multiterminal system on the direct current (DC) side, which leads to DC faults. To reduce the protection and clearance requirements on the DC side of IPFCs, this paper proposes a hybrid current limiter topology suitable for generating a DC-side fault ride-through scheme. The current limiter employs a low-loss branch in steady-state conditions; when the fault occurs, a commutation capacitor and controllable power electronic devices are used to transfer the fault current to the current-limiting branch. To clarify the operating principles of the current limiter, the working states of each stage and electrical stress of each device are analyzed. Different components with varying limiter parameters are also discussed, and optimal parameters to achieve the best limitation effect are discussed. PSCAD simulations show that the proposed limiter can limit the overcurrent effectively, and DC-side fault clearance can be achieved easily with this fault ride-through strategy. The variable speed pumped storage unit with a full-size converter (FSC-VSPSU) can provide fast and flexible regulation capacity for the power grid, assisting the rapid development of the new energy-dominated power systems, and its application is gradually becoming widespread. The excitation system of FSC-VSPSU is crucial for maintaining the motor-port voltage and further supports the stable operation of the entire unit. However, there is currently no research on excitation system modeling, and their essential operating characteristics have not been discussed in detail, which needs further study. With this aim, this paper firstly establishes a detailed transfer function model for FSC-VSPSU, which is then used to study the influence rules of FSC-VSPSU parameters on the operating characteristics. In addition, based on the summarized operating characteristics, the excitation system can be optimized, and its complexity is greatly reduced while ensuring the original performance of the unit. To make clear the influence of renewable energy on ultra-low-frequency oscillation (ULFO) in a hydro-dominant system via an high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system, this paper studies the damping characteristics when wind power is integrated into the sending power system. The damping torque method is applied for the mechanism study and risk evaluation of ULFO. The study of the inner cause and outer performance proves that ULFO belongs to frequency oscillation rather than conventional power oscillation. According to the theoretical analysis, the suggested control mode is identified to reduce the risk of ULFO. Moreover, a robust controller is designed for wind units based on mixed H2/H∞ robust control theory, and the control method makes use of the fast response ability of the converter without compromising the primary frequency regulation ability. Finally, a simulation model of a hydro-dominant sending power system with wind integration is established in PSCAD Version 4.6 software. Electric vehicles have become a crucial component of modern power systems, possessing substantial energy reserves that can be important power supplies in blackouts where the power grid has weak reserves or limited connections to other grids. In order to clarify the technical conditions and control methods of the centralized electric vehicle charging station as the black-start power source of the power grid, assuming that the centralized electric vehicle charging station can be considered a single, large-scale energy storage system, this paper proposes a three-stage coordinated recovery strategy based on the centralized electric vehicle charging station. The strategy involves three distinct stages, beginning with the establishment of AC frequency and voltage by the electric vehicle charging station to initiate the auxiliary load of the power plant. In the middle stage, considering the traditional generator has been connected, the charging station's control mode is set to provide constant active and reactive power output, providing extra voltage and frequency support to the grid-connected generating units and crucial loads. Finally, in the later stage, control strategies are tailored to the charging power stations' capacities, with one group of additional oscillation damping controllers, while the other group adopts additional frequency control to decrease power disturbances, ensuring a smooth recovery of the power grid. A PSCAD/EMTDC-based model was constructed to verify the proposed coordinated grid recovery strategies. The results demonstrated that the centralized station successfully established the voltage and frequency of the AC system, and the designed additional controller also made the recovery process much more stable.
