Flower drop is a major cause for yield loss in many crops. Previously, we found that the tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION-Like (SlIDL6) gene contributes to flower drop induced by low light. However, the molecular mechanisms by which SlIDL6 acts as a signal to regulate low light-induced abscission remain unclear. In this study, SlIDL6 was found to elevate cytosolic Ca2+ concentrations ([Ca2+]cyt) in the abscission zone (AZ), which was required for SlIDL6-induced flower drop under low light. We further identified that 1 calcium-dependent protein kinase gene, SlCPK10, was highly expressed in the AZ and upregulated by SlIDL6-triggered [Ca2+]cyt. Overexpression and knockout of SlCPK10 in tomato resulted in accelerated and delayed abscission, respectively. Genetic evidence further indicated that knockout of SlCPK10 significantly impaired the function of SlIDL6 in accelerating abscission. Furthermore, Ser-371 phosphorylation in SlCPK10 dependent on SlIDL6 was necessary and sufficient for its function in regulating flower drop, probably by stabilizing the SlCPK10 proteins. Multiple cell death pathways are involved in neuronal death in ischemic stroke (IS). However, the role of different cell death pathways in different cell types has not been elucidated. By analyzing three single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) data of IS, we first found that a variety of programmed cell death (PCD) -related genes were significantly changed in different cell types. Based on machine learning and virtual gene knockout, we found that ferroptosis related genes, ferritin heavy chain 1 (Fth1) and ferritin light chain (Ftl1), play a key role in IS. Ftl1 and Fth1 can promote microglia activation, as well as the production of inflammatory factors and chemokines. Cell communication analysis showed that activated microglia could enhance chemotactic peripheral leukocyte infiltration, such as macrophages and neutrophils, through Spp1-Cd44 and App-Cd74 signaling, thereby aggravating brain tissue damage. Furthermore, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) showed that P2ry12 and Mef2c were significantly decreased in oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) group, while Ftl1, Fth1, Apoe, Ctsb, Cd44 and Cd74 were significantly increased in OGD group. Objective: To analyze the ultrasonic features of tonsillar lymphoma to improve the diagnostic accuracy. Methods: The clinical, pathological and ultrasonic data of nine patients with tonsillar lymphoma confirmed by pathology at Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital during June 2015 and June 2022 were analyzed retrospectively, and the characteristics of their ultrasonic images were summarized. Results: All 9 cases of tonsil lymphoma were unilateral tonsil disease, including 4 cases on the left side and 5 cases on the right side. The average maximum diameter of tonsil lymphoma in 9 cases was 4.32 cm. There were 3 cases with simultaneous involvement of tonsil and cervical lymph nodes, all of which were ipsilateral lymph nodes. Gray scale ultrasound showed that the lesions were hypoechoic, with clear boundaries in 7 cases and unclear boundaries in 2 cases. The shape was full and irregular in 5 cases and oval in 4 cases. The echo was uniform in 7 cases and uneven in 2 cases. Color Doppler ultrasonography showed abundant internal blood flow signal in 1 case, a little dotted linear internal blood flow signal in 5 cases, and no obvious internal blood flow signal in 3 cases. Conclusions: The ultrasonic features of tonsillar lymphoma include hypoechoic area, clear boundary, full shape, irregular and uniform internal echo, no or low linear signal of internal blood flow. Ultrasonography is of great value in the diagnosis of this disease and can help clinical decision-making.

Auxin regulates flower and fruit abscission, but how developmental signals mediate auxin transport in abscission remains unclear. Here, we reveal the role of the transcription factor BEL1-LIKE HOMEODOMAIN11 (SlBEL11) in regulating auxin transport during abscission in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). SlBEL11 is highly expressed in the fruit abscission zone, and its expression increases during fruit development. Knockdown of SlBEL11 expression by RNA interference (RNAi) caused premature fruit drop at the breaker (Br) and 3 d post-breaker (Br+3) stages of fruit development. Transcriptome and metabolome analysis of SlBEL11-RNAi lines revealed impaired flavonoid biosynthesis and decreased levels of most flavonoids, especially quercetin, which functions as an auxin transport inhibitor. This suggested that SlBEL11 prevents premature fruit abscission by modulating auxin efflux from fruits, which is crucial for the formation of an auxin response gradient. Indeed, quercetin treatment suppressed premature fruit drop in SlBEL11-RNAi plants. DNA affinity purification sequencing (DAP-seq) analysis indicated that SlBEL11 induced expression of the transcription factor gene SlMYB111 by directly binding to its promoter. Chromatin immunoprecipitation-quantitative polymerase chain reaction and electrophoretic mobility shift assay showed that S. lycopersicum MYELOBLASTOSIS VIRAL ONCOGENE HOMOLOG111 (SlMYB111) induces the expression of the core flavonoid biosynthesis genes SlCHS1, SlCHI, SlF3H, and SlFLS by directly binding to their promoters. Our findings suggest that the SlBEL11-SlMYB111 module modulates flavonoid biosynthesis to fine-tune auxin efflux from fruits and thus maintain an auxin response gradient in the pedicel, thereby preventing premature fruit drop., (© 2024 The Authors. Objective: To investigate the clinical effect of magnetic stimulation combined with moxibustion on mild to moderate overactive bladder (OAB) and sexual function in women., Methods: We enrolled 80 female patients with mild to moderate OAB in this study and equally randomized them into a control and an experimental group, the former treated by magnetic stimulation and the latter by magnetic stimulation combined with moxibustion, both for 8 weeks. We obtained from the patients their OAB syndrome scores (OABSS), 72-hour urination diary (72-h UD) scores, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire － Overactive Bladder (ICIQ-OAB) scores and female sexual function indexes (FSFI), and compared them between the two groups before and after intervention., Results: A total of 77 patients completed the study, 37 in the control and 40 in the experimental group. There were no statistically significant differences in the baseline data between the two groups (P > 0.05). Compared with the baseline, the experimental group showed significant improvement after treatment in the OABSS (7.54±1.12 vs 4.46±0.96), 72-h urine volume (［126.40±46.04］ vs ［216.63±38.26］ ml), urination frequency (15.55±3.21 vs 8.03±1.40), ICIQ-OAB score (10.25±1.15 vs 6.32±1.07) and FSFI (20.00±12.40 vs 33.30±21.00) (all P < 0.05), even more significantly than in the control group (OABSS: 4.46±0.96 vs 5.59±0.90; 72-h urine volume: ［216.63±38.26］ vs ［173.41±15.55］ ml; urination frequency: 8.03±1.40 vs 9.90±1.49; ICIQ-OAB score: 6.32±1.07 vs 7.89±0.77; FSFI: 33.30±21.00 vs 30.40±10.40) (all P < 0.01)., Conclusion: Magnetic stimulation combined with moxibustion can improve the symptoms of mild to moderate overactive bladder and improve sexual function in females.

Clinically unpredictable retention following fat grafting remains outstanding problems because of the unrevealed mechanism of grafted fat survival. The role of autophagy, a process to maintain cellular homeostasis through recycling cellular debris, has yet been to be reported in fat grafting. This study aims to improve the survival of fat grafting through the autophagy. First, the relationship between cell death and autophagy in the early stage of fat grafting was evaluated through immunostaining, RNA sequencing, and western blot. Next, rapamycin, an autophagic agonist, was used for the culturing of adipose-derived stem cells and adipocytes during ischemia. Cell death, autophagy, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were assayed. Finally, rapamycin was used to assist fat grafting in nude mice. The results demonstrated that the peak of cell death at the early stage of fat grafting was accompanied by a decrease in autophagy. In vitro, during ischemia, 25 nM was confirmed as the optimal dose of rapamycin that reduces cell death with enhanced autophagy and mitophagy, improved mitochondrial quality as well as decreased ROS accumulation. In vivo, promoted mitophagy, alleviated oxidative stress, and decreased cell apoptosis of rapamycin-treated fat grafts were observed in the early stage. In addition, rapamycin increased the survival of fat grafts with increased neovascularization and reduced fibrosis. Objective: To compare the clinical efficacy between closed reduction combined with semi-circular external fixator and minimally invasive percutaneous plate osteosynthesis (MIPPO) in the treatment of middle anddistal tibia fractures., Methods: The clinical data of sixty patients with middle and distal tibia fractures admitted between January 2019 and November 2022, were retrospectively analyzed. These patients were categorized into external fixation group ( n =30) and internal fixation group ( n =30). There were 18 males and 12 females in the external fixation group, with an average age of (49.29±2.35) years old. Among them, 14 patients presented with fractures on the left side, and 16 patients presented with fractures on the right side. Closed reduction, arched wire, and semi-circular external fixator were used for treatment. There were 20 males and 10 females in the internal fixation group, with an average age of (48.96±1.87) years old. Among them, 15 patients presented with fractures on the left side, and 15 patients presented with fractures on the right side. MIPPO technique was used for the treatment. Perioperative parameters, including time injury to surgery, surgical duration, incision length, intraoperative bleeding, time to active activity, and incision healing level, were compared between the two groups. Clinical outcomes were also assessed, including Johner-Wruhs scores, time to minimum pain-adapted full weight-bearing, visual analog scale (VAS), SF-36 scale, and complications., Results: The external fixation group exhibited a significantly shorter incision length (1.36±0.86) cm and lower intraoperative bleeding (10.83±5.73) ml compared to the internal fixation group (12.74±3.12) cm and (86.47±8.90) ml, respectively( P <0.05). The postoperative active activity time (1.50±0.54) days and minimum pain-adapted full weight-bearing activity time(108.87±3.43) days in the external fixation group were slightly delayed than the internal fixation group(1.15±0.98) days and (105.27±3.68) days, respectively( P <0.05). Over a mean postoperative follow-up duration of (6.23±1.89) months, both groups showed improved VAS and SF-36 scale scores. There were no statistically significant differences in VAS and SF-36 scale scores 1, 3, 6 months post-operatively between the two groups( P >0.05). The intraoperative surgical time in the external fixation group (35.42±9.31) minutes was shorter than that in the internal fixation group(74.22±7.81) minutes ( P <0.05). There was no intraoperative vascular or nerve injury, nor postoperative skin necrosis in the external fixation group. However, skin necrosis was observed in 6 patientsin the internal fixation group, representing a statistically significant difference ( P <0.05)., Conclusion: Both external fixation and plate internal fixation are effective methods for the treatment of middle and distal tibia fractures. External fixation exhibits the advantage of less surgical trauma and a lower incidence of complications.

Objective: To investigate the application effect of functional acupoint electrical stimulation combined with tadara irregular administration in middle-aged and elderly patients with erectile dysfunction (ED), and to provide reference for clinical treatment., Methods: A total of 40 middle-aged and elderly patients with ED admitted to the pelvic floor Center of our hospital from March 2021 to March 2023 were randomly divided into two groups with 20 cases in each group.The control group was treated with tadalafil regularly, and the observation group was treated with functional acupoint electrical stimulation on the basis of this treatment. The total course of treatment was 6 weeks.The clinical efficacy of the two groups was compared. The therapeutic efficacy was evaluated by the International Erectile Function Index (IIEF-5), penile hardness score (EHS), serum total testosterone (TT) level, sexual satisfaction scale (SS) and pelvic floor electromyography, and the occurrence of adverse events was recorded., Results: The total effective rate of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group (90% vs 70%, P < 0.05). After 6 weeks of treatment, both groups showed improvements in IIEF-5, EHS, SS, and TT compared to before treatment (P < 0.01). However, the improvement in the observation group was significantly better than that in the control group［IIEF-5: (22.13±2.11) vs (19.69±2.04), EHS: (3.68±0.47) vs (2.89±0.60), SS: (77.41±7.59) vs (70.32±7.28), TT: (13.43±3.89) nmol/L vs (8.85±3.02) nmol/L, all P < 0.01］; There were no significant changes in pelvic floor muscle electromyography values in the control group before and after treatment (P > 0.05), while in the observation group, pelvic floor muscle electromyography values (PFMV) in the pre-resting phase, fast muscle (Type II muscle) phase, slow muscle (Type I muscle) phase, endurance testing phase, and post-resting phase all improved compared to before treatment and were superior to the control group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Functional acupoint electrical stimulation combined with tadara irregular administration can improve the therapeutic effect of middle-aged and elderly patients with ED, improve pelvic floor function, safe and reliable.

Objective: To explore the clinical effect of multiple precision behavioral therapy (MPBT) on mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence (SUI) with female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in women., Methods: We randomly divided 90 female patients with mild to moderate SUI with FSD into three groups of an equal number: control group A, control group B and an MPBT group, treated by electrical stimulation, Kegel training and MPBT, respectively, all for 8 weeks. Using International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), Incontinence Impact Questionnaire (IIQ-7), Female Sexual Function Indexes (FSFI) and Glazer protocol, we evaluated the clinical effects, recorded the cost of treatment, and compared them among the three groups of patients., Results: Totally, 87 of the patients completed the treatment, 27 in control group A, 30 in control group B and 30 in the MPBT group. There was no significant difference in the baseline data among the three groups (P > 0.05). ICIQ-SF and IIQ-7 scores, FSFI and Glazer values were remarkably improved in the MPBT group after treatment (P < 0.05). The therapeutic effect was significantly better and the treatment cost markedly lower in the MPBT than in the control groups (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Multiple precision behavioral therapy can effectively improve the clinical symptoms of mild to moderate stress urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction in women, with low cost and high safety.

Background: Tuberculosis infection is a major complication of silicosis, but there is no study on whether silicosis can affect the sensitivity of QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) assays. This study will analyze the relationship between silicosis and QFT-GIT, determine the main factor of the QFT-GIT sensitivity decrease in silicosis and explore the methods to increase the sensitivity., Methods: Silicosis patients with positive tubercle bacillus cultures were collected. The QFT-GIT, flow cytometry and blocking antibodies were used., Results: The sensitivity of QFT-GIT in silicosis patients (58.46%) was significantly decreased and the expression of PD-1 on T cells and CD56 + NK cells in pulmonary tuberculosis combined with silicosis were higher than normal tuberculosis patients and silicosis only patients. Further analysis found that the ratio of PD-1 + CD4 + T and IFN-γwere negatively correlated and blockaded the PD-1 pathway with antibodies can restore the sensitivity of QFT-GIT in silicosis., Conclusions: This is the first study to analyze the relationship between immune exhaustion and QFT-GIT in silicosis and found that the sensitivity of QFT-GIT was decreased by the expression of PD-1 on lymphocytes. Antibody blocking experiments increased the expression of IFN-γ and provided a new method to improve the sensitivity of QFT in silicosis. The study also found that silicosis can increase PD-1 expression. As PD-1 functions in infectious diseases, it will promote immune exhaustion in silicosis and lead to tuberculosis from latent to active infection. Plants are constantly exposed to diverse microbes and thus develop a sophisticated perceive system to distinguish non-self from self and identify non-self as friends or foes. Plants can detect microbes in apoplast via recognition of microbe-associated molecular patterns (MAMPs) by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) on the cell surface to activate appropriate signaling in response to microbes. MAMPs are highly conserved but essential molecules of microbes and often buried in microbes' complex structure. Mature MAMPs are released from microbes by invasion-induced hydrolytic enzymes in apoplast and accumulate in proximity of plasma membrane-localized PRRs to be perceived as ligands to activate downstream signaling. In response, microbes developed strategies to counteract these processing. Here, we review how the form, the concentration, and the size of mature MAMPs affect the PRR-mediated immune signaling. Background and Objective: Computer aided diagnosis technology has been widely used to diagnose autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from neural images. The performance of the model usually depends largely on a sufficient number of training samples that reflect the real sample distribution. Due to the lack of labelled neural images data, multisite data are often pooled together to expand the sample size. However, the heterogeneity among sites will inevitably lead to a decline in the generalization of models. To solve this problem, we propose a multisource unsupervised domain adaptation method using rough adjoint inconsistency and optimal transport., Methods: First, we define the concept of rough adjoint inconsistency and propose a double quantization method based on rough adjoint inconsistency and Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory to estimate the weight coefficient of each source domain to accurately describe the importance of each source domain to the target domain. Second, using optimal transport theory, we weaken the data distribution differences between domains and solve the problem of class imbalance by adjusting the sampling weights among classes., Results: The ASD recognition accuracy of the proposed method is improved on all eight tasks, which are 70.67%, 64.86%, 62.50%, 70.80%, 73.08%, 71.19%, 75.41% and 75.76%, respectively. Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 gene (PVT1) is related to the progress of various cancers. Here, we illuminated the role of PVT1 in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cell proliferation and apoptosis. PVT1 was upregulated in plasma samples from patients with ALL and ALL cell lines. PVT1 silencing repressed cell viability and enhanced cell apoptosis in Jurkat and SUP-B15 cells. PVT1 targeted microRNA-486-5p (miR-486-5p) and negatively modulated miR-486-5p expression. Upregulation of miR-486-5p decreased cell viability and increased ALL cell apoptosis. Mastermind Like Transcriptional Coactivator 3 (MAML3) was a downstream molecule of miR-486-5p and miR-486-5p mimic transfection weakened its expression in ALL cells. Rescue experiments proved that reintroduction of PVT1 counteracted the impacts of miR-486-5p in ALL cell proliferation and apoptosis. In vivo , PVT1 silencing repressed the tumor growth of SUP-B15 cells and reduced the expression of MAML3. Altogether, silencing of PVT1 inhibited ALL cell growth and induced cell apoptosis through sponging miR-486-5p.

Purpose: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) represents the most common subtype of thyroid cancer (TC). This study was set out to explore the potential effect of CHD1L on PTC and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM)., Methods: We searched for T2DM susceptibility genes through the GWAS database and obtained T2DM-related differentially expressed gene from the GEO database. The expression and clinical data of TC and normal samples were collated from the TCGA database. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was subsequently applied to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the CHD1L for the diagnosis of PTC. The MCP-counter package in R language was then utilized to generate immune cell score to evaluate the relationship between CHD1L expression and immune cells. Then, we performed functional enrichment analysis of co-expressed genes and DEGs to determine significantly enriched GO terms and KEGG to predict the potential functions of CHD1L in PTC samples and T2DM adipose tissue., Results: From two genes (ABCB9, CHD1L) were identified to be DEGs (p < 1 * 10 -5 ) that exerted effects on survival (HR > 1, p < 0.05) in PTC and served as T2DM susceptibility genes. The gene expression matrix-based scoring of immunocytes suggested that PTC samples with high and low CHD1L expression presented with significant differences in the tumor microenvironment (TME). The enrichment analysis of CHD1L co-expressed genes and DEGs suggested that CHD1L was involved in multiple pathways to regulate the development of PTC. Among them, Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus infection, salmonella infection and TNF signaling pathways were highlighted as the three most relevant pathways. GSEA analysis, employed to analyze the genome dataset of PTC samples and T2DM adipose tissue presenting with high and low expression groups of CHD1L, suggests that these differential genes are related to chemokine signaling pathway, leukocyte transendothelial migration and TCELL receptor signaling pathway., Conclusion: CHD1L may potentially serve as an early diagnostic biomarker for PTC, and a target of immunotherapy for PTC and T2DM., (© 2021. Objective: To study the effect and safety of Yun's modified pelvic floor exercise (PFE) in the treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD)., Methods: We enrolled 80 FSD patients from the Outpatient Department of Shanghai Fifth People's Hospital from August 2018 to January 2021 and randomized them into an experimental (n = 40) and a control group (n = 40), the former treated by Yun's modified PFE and the latter by traditional PFE, both for 8 weeks. After 0, 4 and 8 weeks of treatment, we evaluated the clinical effect by comparing the female sexual function indexes (FSFI), including sexual desire, sexual arousal, vaginal lubrication, orgasm, sexual satisfaction and sexual intercourse pain, the male partners' sexual satisfaction, and the pelvic floor muscle strength between the two groups of patients., Results: Thirty-four of the patients in the experimental group and 36 in the control completed the treatment. There were no statistically significant differences in the baseline data between the two groups (P > 0.05). The FSFIs were significantly improved in both the experimental and control groups after 4 and 8 weeks of treatment compared with the baseline (P < 0.05), even more significantly in the experimental than in the control group at 8 weeks (P < 0.05). The effectiveness rate was remarkably increased from 52.8% at 4 weeks to 72.2% at 8 weeks in the experimental group (P < 0.05) and from 29.4% to 44.1% in the control (P < 0.05), even more significantly in the former than in the latter group (P < 0.05). Statistically significant differences were found in muscle tone and type I muscle strength between the two groups at 8 weeks (P < 0.05) but not at 4 weeks (P > 0.05). Type II muscle strength and partners' satisfaction were markedly higher in the experimental than in the control group at 4 and 8 weeks (P < 0.05). No adverse events were observed in either of the two groups., Conclusions: Yun's modified pelvic floor exercise can improve the symptoms of female sexual dysfunction, more effective than the traditional pelvic floor muscle exercise, and with no serious adverse reactions.

Background: Health care workers (HCWs) are at risk for occupationally acquired Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and tuberculosis (TB) disease due to repeated exposure to workplace tubercle bacilli. To determine whether continual mycobacterial stimulation correlates with increased expression of inhibitory T cell receptors, here we compared PD-1 receptor expression on surfaces of circulating T cells between naïve (uninfected) HCWs and HCWs with latent TB infection (LTBI)., Result: Data collected from 133 medical workers who met study selection criteria were included in the final analysis. QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-​Tube (QFT-GIT) testing yielded positive results for 32 HCWs, for an overall LTBI rate of 24.1%. Multivariate analysis identified HCW length of service > 15 years as an independent risk factor for a positive QFT-GIT result. In addition, comparisons of blood T cell subgroup profiles between QFT- and QFT+ groups indicated QFT+ subjects possessed greater proportions of mature (TM), transitional memory (TTM) and effector memory (TEM) CD4+ T cell subgroups and lower proportions of naïve T cells (TN). Moreover, the QFT+ group percentage of CD8+ T cells with detectable surface PD-1 was significantly higher than the corresponding percentage for the QFT- group. Meanwhile, no statistical intergroup difference was observed in percentages of CD4+ T cells with detectible surface PD-1., Conclusions: Our data demonstrated that upregulated PD-1 expression on circulating CD8+, but not CD4+ T cells, was associated with latent TB infection of HCWs. As compared to other hospitals, occupational TB infection risk in our hospital was substantially mitigated by implementation of multitiered infection control measures.

In many fruiting plant species, flower abscission is induced by low light stress. Here, we elucidated how signaling mediated by the peptide INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION (IDA) controls low light-induced flower drop in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum). We analyzed the expression patterns of an IDA-Like gene (SlIDL6) during low light-induced flower abscission, and used tandem mass spectrometry to identify and characterize the mature SlIDL6 peptide. Tomato knockout lines were created to investigate the in vivo function of SlIDL6. In addition, yeast one-hybrid assays were used to investigate the binding of the SlWRKY17 transcription factor to the SlIDL6 promoter, and silencing of SlWRKY17 expression delayed low light-induced flower abscission. SlIDL6 was specifically expressed in the abscission zone and at high levels during low light-induced abscission and ethylene treatment. SlIDL6 knockout lines showed delayed low light-induced flower drop, and the application of SlIDL6 peptide accelerated abscission. Overexpression of SlIDL6 rescued the ida mutant phenotype in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), suggesting functional conservation between species. SlIDL6-mediated abscission was via an ethylene-independent pathway. Objective: We conducted a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare the efficacy and safety of nine non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in treating patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA)., Methods: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of NSAIDs for the treatment in children with JIA were searched systematically by using MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library for available literature up to January 1, 2019. Bayesian network meta-analysis was used to combine direct and indirect evidence on treatment effectiveness and safety., Results: Eight eligible RCTs involving 1112 patients with JIA were identified, addressing 9 interventions. The ranking probability plot based on the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) indicated that celecoxib (6 mg/kg twice-a-day) had the highest probability of being most effective (SUCRA = 76.4%) among four NSAIDs (celecoxib, rofecoxib, meloxicam, and naproxen). Also, rofecoxib (0.3 mg/kg once-a-day) and piroxicam demonstrated a higher probability of safety in treating children with JIA (SUCRA = 33.0% and 35.5%, respectively), compared with other interventions., Conclusions: The quality of available evidence limits the formation of powerful conclusions regarding the comparative efficacy or safety of NSAIDs used to treat JIA.

Objective: To study the effects of 1470 nm semiconductor laser enucleation of the prostate (SCLEP) and transurethral plasma electrotomy (TUPE) on erectile function and pelvic floor muscle strength in BPH patients., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data on 72 cases of BPH treated in our hospital from July 2017 to July 2019 by TUPE (group A, n = 36) or 1470 nm SCLEP (group B, n = 36). We observed and compared the postoperative penile erectile function, retrograde ejaculation and pelvic floor muscle strength between the two groups of patients., Results: Compared with group A, group B showed a significantly higher IIEF-5 score (19.43 ± 1.61 vs 21.15 ± 1.32, P < 0.05) and pelvic floor muscle strength (electromyographic ［EMG］ value) during rapid contraction (36.36 ± 1.38 vs 43.53 ± 2.04, P < 0.05), continuous contraction (34.27 ± 1.63 vs 39.46 ± 1.48, P < 0.05) and endurance test (35.24 ± 1.57 vs 38.19 ± 1.67, P < 0.05), but lower incidence rates of ED and retrograde ejaculation., Conclusions: Compared with TUPE, 1470 nm SCLEP affects less the erectile function and pelvic floor muscle strength of BPH patients.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical usefulness of metagenomic Next-generation sequencing (mNGS) on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) samples to discriminate pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) from Non-TB community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in PTB suspects., Methods: We investigate the performance of mNGS on BALF samples from 110 PTB suspects, in comparison with conventional microbiological testing (solid media culture, acid-fast bacilli staining (AFS), Xpert) of BALF or sputum samples and final clinical diagnosis., Results: We finally clinically diagnosed 48 cases of pulmonary tuberculosis patients and 62 cases of non-tuberculosis patients. Comparing to the final clinical diagnosis, mNGS produced a sensitivity of 47.92%, which was similar to that of Xpert (45.83%) and culture (46.81%), but much higher than that of AFS (29.17%) for TB diagnosis in BALF samples. Apart from detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis, mNGS also identified mixed infections in PTB patients, including 3 fungal cases and 1 bacteria case. Meanwhile, mNGS efficiently identified 14 of 22 (63.63%) cases of non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), 7 cases of fungi, 1 case of viral infection, and other common bacterial pathogens in Non-PTB group. Finally, mNGS identified 67.23% infection cases within 3 days, while the conventional methods identified 49.58% infection cases for over 90 days., Conclusion: Our data show that mNGS of BALF represents a potentially effective tool for the rapid diagnosis of PTB suspects., Competing Interests: Declaration of Competing Interest We declare that we do not have any commercial or associative interest that represents a conflict of interest in connection with the work submitted., (Copyright © 2020 The British Infection Association. Grain size is one of the essential components determining rice yield and is a target for both domestication and artificial breeding. Gibberellins (GAs) are diterpenoid phytohormones that influence diverse aspects of plant growth and development. Several quantitative trait loci (QTLs) have been identified that control grain size through phytohormone regulation. However, little is known about the role of GAs in the control of grain size. Here we report the cloning and characterization of a QTL, GW6 (GRAIN WIDTH 6), which encodes a GA-regulated GAST family protein and positively regulates grain width and weight. GW6 is highly expressed in the young panicle and increases grain width by promoting cell expansion in the spikelet hull. Knockout of GW6 exhibits reduced grain size and weight, whereas overexpression of GW6 results in increased grain size and weight. GW6 is induced by GA and its knockout downregulates the expression of GA biosynthesis genes and decreases GA content in the young panicle. We found that a natural variation in the cis element CAAT-box in the promoter of GW6 is associated with its expression level and grain width and weight. Furthermore, introduction of GW6 to Oryza indica variety HJX74 can lead to a 10.44% increase in rice grain yield, indicating that GW6 has great potential to improve grain yield in rice., (© 2020 Society for Experimental Biology and John Wiley & Sons Ltd.)

Abscission is triggered by multiple environmental and developmental cues, including endogenous plant hormones. KNOTTED-LIKE HOMEOBOX (KNOX) transcription factors (TFs) play an important role in controlling abscission in plants. However, the underlying molecular mechanism of KNOX TFs in abscission is largely unknown. Here, we identified LcKNAT1, a KNOTTED-LIKE FROM ARABIDOPSIS THALIANA1 (KNAT1)-like protein from litchi, which regulates abscission by modulating ethylene biosynthesis. LcKNAT1 is expressed in the fruit abscission zone and its expression decreases during fruitlet abscission. Furthermore, the expression of the ethylene biosynthetic genes LcACS1, LcACS7, and LcACO2 increases in the fruit abscission zone, in parallel with the emission of ethylene in fruitlets. In vitro and in vivo assays revealed that LcKNAT1 inhibits the expression of LcACS/ACO genes by directly binding to their promoters. Moreover, ectopic expression of LcKNAT1 represses flower abscission in tomatoes. Transgenic plants expressing LcKNAT1 also showed consistently decreased expression of ACS/ACO genes. This study was designed to explore the impact of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on inflammation and gut microbiota in mice with allergic asthma. Mice were divided into four groups: control group, OVA (ovalbumin) group, Con+LBP group, OVA+LBP group. After 28 days of LBP intervention, mice were euthanized and associated indications were investigated. Histopathological examination demonstrated that LBP reduced lung injury. The results of our current study provide evidence that supplementation with LBP in asthmatic mice decreases TNF , IL-4 , IL-6 , MCP-1 , and IL-17A in plasma and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF). Sequencing and analysis of gut microbiota indicated that compared with the OVA group, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium were increased, but Firmicutes , Actinobacteria , Alistipes , and Clostridiales were decreased in the OVA+LBP group. We also found that gut microbiota were related to inflammation-related factors. Therefore, we speculate that LBP may improve allergic asthma by altering gut microbiota and inhibiting inflammation in mice.

Grain size is an important component trait of grain yield, which is frequently threatened by abiotic stress. However, little is known about how grain yield and abiotic stress tolerance are regulated. Here, we characterize GSA1, a quantitative trait locus (QTL) regulating grain size and abiotic stress tolerance associated with metabolic flux redirection. GSA1 encodes a UDP-glucosyltransferase, which exhibits glucosyltransferase activity toward flavonoids and monolignols. GSA1 regulates grain size by modulating cell proliferation and expansion, which are regulated by flavonoid-mediated auxin levels and related gene expression. GSA1 is required for the redirection of metabolic flux from lignin biosynthesis to flavonoid biosynthesis under abiotic stress and the accumulation of flavonoid glycosides, which protect rice against abiotic stress. GSA1 overexpression results in larger grains and enhanced abiotic stress tolerance. Our findings provide insights into the regulation of grain size and abiotic stress tolerance associated with metabolic flux redirection and a potential means to improve crops.

Objective: To study the protective effect of a scrotal rapid recovery dressing device, scrotal girdle, on the scrotum of the patient with acute epididymitis, so as to improve the prognosis and the patient's satisfaction., Methods: A total of 120 patients with acute epididymitis were treated in our hospital from December 2018 to November 2019, 60 with the scrotal girdle plus local cold compress in addition to antibiotics administration (the scrotal girdle group) and the other 60 with antibiotics only (the control group), all for 6 days. Then, comparisons were made between the two groups of patients in the improvement of scrotal swelling, total effectiveness rate and the patients' satisfaction with therapeutic outcomes., Results: After 6 days of treatment, the patients in the scrotal girdle group, compared with the controls, showed significantly lower scrotal swelling scores (1.01 ± 0.34 vs 1.38 ± 0.20, P < 0.05), a higher total effectiveness rate (83.33% vs 65%, P < 0.05) and higher satisfaction with the therapeutic outcomes (86.67% vs 56.67%, P < 0.05)., Conclusions: For the treatment of acute epididymitis, the application of the scrotal girdle for protection can significantly relieve scrotal pain and discomfort, improve the therapeutic effect and patients' satisfaction, and enhance the patients' recovery and quality of life.

Objective: To investigate the application of a metamorphic mechanism-based special dressing system (MMDS) in improving the prognosis and comfort of the patient after scrotal surgery., Methods: We included 48 cases of scrotal surgery using the traditional method for postoperative dressing from June 2017 to June 2018 (the control group) and another 48 cases employing MMDS postoperatively from July 2018 to June 2019 (the MMDS group). We observed the differences between the two groups of patients in the incidence of scrotal edema, pain score, hospitalization days, patients' satisfaction, and dressing time., Results: The scrotal edema score showed no statistically significant difference between the MMDS and control groups at 24 hours after operation (P > 0.05) but remarkably lower in the former than in the latter group at 48 hours (1.42 ± 0.5 vs 2.27 ± 0.7, P < 0.05) and 72 hours postoperatively (1.35 ± 0.2 vs 2.25 ± 0.7, P < 0.05). The MMDS group, compared with the controls, also exhibited a lower pain score (2.2 ± 1.0 vs 3.4 ± 1.5, P < 0.05), shorter hospitalization time (［5.96 ± 1.2］ vs ［9.13 ± 2.3］ d, P < 0.05) and higher satisfaction score (98.1 ± 1.6 vs 92.8 ± 2.8, P < 0.05), as well as shorter dressing time at 24, 48 and 72 hours after operation (P < 0.05)., Conclusions: The metamorphic mechanism-based special dressing system is a safe, efficient, simple and feasible method for dressing after scrotal surgery, which can effectively promote recovery and improve the quality of life of the patients.

New carbon-doped ferric zinc oxide sorbents were fabricated to capture the environment carcinogen tobacco specific nitrosamines (TSNA) efficiently in solution, following new adsorption model of electrostatic attraction instead of traditional geometric constraints. The influence of ferric content on the structure-property of the sorbents was systemically studied with XRD, N 2 adsorption-desorption and SEM methods combined with the adsorption of TSNA in different solutions. New sorbent captured 99% of 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone (NNK) in simulated surface water and 40% of TSNA in the tobacco extract solution, more than activated carbon or zeolites. Ferric ZnO sorbent took about 15 min to reach the adsorption equilibrium in the NNK or Pb(Ⅱ) solution, faster than NaZSM-5 zeolite. Moreover, the adsorbed NNK on ferric ZnO sorbent decomposed at mild conditions for the first time, providing a new way to control environment pollution., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. The health literacy refers to the ability of individuals to acquire and understand basic health information and services and use them to make the right decisions to maintain and promote their health. Health literacy data focusing on cancer prevention and control was limited in China. In order to understand the health literacy and awareness of cancer risk factors and the cancer screening, early diagnosis and treatment in Chinese urban residents and compare the effect of different stages of the cancer intervention, the Cancer Screening Program in Urban China (CanSPUC) program, supported by the National Key Public Health Program, conducted a survey on the health literacy of the cancer prevention and treatment among urban residents in 16 provinces nationwide from 2015 to 2017. Four subgroups were designed in this survey, including (1) general population who have never participated in any cancer screening programs at a community-level; (2) individuals who have previously attended the CanSPUC program for cancer risk assessment or screening intervention; (3) cancer patients who were receiving treatment in local hospitals; (4) a special group from employees of government and public institutions (non-health system), state-owned enterprises and private enterprises (to have better understand on the impact of socioeconomic factors). The self-designed questionnaire covered six parts, including basic information, consciousness of common risk factors to cancer, awareness of early detection, awareness of early diagnosis, awareness of early treatment, and the needs and approaches for knowledge of cancer prevention and treatment. A total of 32 257 individuals were included in the final analyses. This paper landscaped the overall design of the survey, including participants, domains of the instrument, quality control, basic characteristics of the included individuals. These descriptions are applicable to each individual report of the current special issue of "Health Literacy of Cancer Control in Urban China" and future reports, in which more detailed results are and will be reported. The findings of this survey could provide some useful implications for similar researches in the future.

Objective: To understand the health literacy and relevant factors of cancer prevention consciousness in Chinese urban residents from 2015 to 2017. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 16 provinces covered by the Cancer Screening Program in Urban China from 2015 to 2017. A total of 32 257 local residents aged ≥18 years old who could understand the investigation procedure were included in the study by using the cluster sampling method and convenient sampling method. All local residents were categorized into four groups, which contained 15 524 community residents, 8 016 cancer risk assessment/screening population, 2 289 cancer patients and 6 428 occupational population, respectively. The self-designed questionnaire was used to collect the information of demographic characteristics and cancer prevention consciousness focusing on nine common risk factors, including smoking, alcohol, fiber food, food in hot temperature or pickled food, chewing betel nut, helicobacter pylori, moldy food, hepatitis B infection, estrogen, and exercise. The logistic regression model was adopted to identify the influencing factors. Results: The overall health literacy of the cancer prevention consciousness was 77.4% (24 980 participants), with 77.4% (12 018 participants), 79.9% (6 406 participants), 77.2% (1 766 participants) and 74.5% (4 709 participants) in each group ( P< 0.001). The correct response rates for nine risk factors ranged from 55.2% to 93.0%. The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that compared with community residents, people with primary school level education or below, and the number of people living together in the family <3, the cancer risk assessment/screening intervention population, cancer patients, those with junior high school level educationor above and the number of people living in the family ≥3 had better health literacy of the cancer prevention consciousness (all P values <0.05). Compared with females, 39 years old and below, government-affiliated institutions or civil servants, from the eastern region, males, older than 40 years, company or enterprise employees, and from the middle or western region had worse health literacy of the cancer prevention consciousness (all P values <0.05). Conclusion: The health literacy of the cancer prevention consciousness in Chinese urban residents should be improved. The cancer screening intervention, gender, age, education, occupation, the number of people co-living in the family, and residential region were associated with the health literacy of the cancer prevention consciousness.

Objective: The predictive value of pre-autologous stem cell transplantation (pre-ASCT) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) scans according to different criteria remains elusive in patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL)., Methods: A total of 46 DLBCL patients treated with pre-ASCT were enrolled in the present study, and two methods, Deauville score and maximal standardized uptake value reduction (ΔSUVmax), were used to evaluate the PET/CT scans before transplantation., Results: In patients with Deauville 1-3 and ≥4, the 2-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates were 82.8 and 11.8% (p < 0.001), respectively, while the 2-year overall survival (OS) rates were 89.7 and 41.2%, respectively (p < 0.001). When using the ΔSUVmax cut-off of 66% criterion, in patients with a ΔSUVmax of >66 and ≤66%, the 2-year PFS rates were 78.1 and 7.1%, respectively (p < 0.001), while the 2-year OS rates were 87.5 and 35.7%, respectively (p < 0.001). In the univariate analysis, the ΔSUVmax, Deauville score, NCCN-IPI and serum lactate dehydrogenase levels were significantly correlated with the 2-year PFS/OS. Furthermore, the multivariate analysis revealed that the Deauville score was an independent prognostic factor for 2-year PFS., Conclusion: The present results indicate that PET/CT scans at pre-ASCT can predict the survival of DLBCL patients, and the Deauville score is better than ΔSUVmax in prognostic prediction., (© 2019 S. This study aimed to investigate the correlation of long noncoding RNA zinc finger antisense 1 (lncRNA ZFAS1) expression with disease risk, disease severity and inflammatory cytokines levels in lumbar disc degeneration (LDD) patients.83 LDD patients underwent surgery and 28 traumatized, non-LDD patients underwent lumbar disc surgery (controls) were consecutively enrolled in this case-control study. Lumbar disc tissue was obtained during surgery and herniated nucleus pulposus (HNP) was isolated to detect lncRNA ZFAS1 expression and inflammatory cytokines mRNA levels by RT-qPCR, and determine protein levels of inflammatory cytokines by western blot.HNP lncRNA ZFAS1 expression in LDD patients was up-regulated compared with controls (P < .001), and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve showed lncRNA ZFAS1 expression disclosed a good predictive value for LDD risk with area under curve (AUC) 0.753 (95% CI 0.646-0.859). And after adjustment by age, gender and body mass index (BMI), lncRNA ZFAS1 (P = .017) remained to be an independent predictive factor for higher LDD risk. In addition, lncRNA ZFAS1 expression was positively associated with Modified Pfirrmann Grade (P = .015). As to inflammatory cytokines, lncRNA ZFAS1 expression was observed to be positively correlated with TNF-α (P = .002), IL-1β (P = .007) and IL-6 (P = .015) mRNAs expressions while reversely associated with IL-10 mRNA level (P = .014); and lncRNA ZFAS1 expression was also positively correlated with protein levels of TNF-α (P = .038) and IL-6 (P = .027) while reversely associated with IL-10 protein expression (P = .039).lncRNA ZFAS1 expression associates with increased risk, elevated disease severity and higher inflammatory cytokines levels in LDD patients.

Background: Leaf morphology and spikelet number are two important traits associated with grain yield. To understand how genes coordinating with sink and sources of cereal crops is important for grain yield improvement guidance. Although many researches focus on leaf morphology or grain number in rice, the regulating molecular mechanisms are still unclear., Results: In this study, we identified a prohibitin complex 2α subunit, NAL8, that contributes to multiple developmental process and is required for normal leaf width and spikelet number at the reproductive stage in rice. These results were consistent with the ubiquitous expression pattern of NAL8 gene. We used genetic complementation, CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing system, RNAi gene silenced system and overexpressing system to generate transgenic plants for confirming the fuctions of NAL8. Mutation of NAL8 causes a reduction in the number of plastoglobules and shrunken thylakoids in chloroplasts, resulting in reduced cell division. In addition, the auxin levels in nal8 mutants are higher than in TQ, while the cytokinin levels are lower than in TQ. Moreover, RNA-sequencing and proteomics analysis shows that NAL8 is involved in multiple hormone signaling pathways as well as photosynthesis in chloroplasts and respiration in mitochondria., Conclusions: Our findings provide new insights into the way that NAL8 functions as a molecular chaperone in regulating plant leaf morphology and spikelet number through its effects on mitochondria and chloroplasts associated with cell division.

As sessile organisms, plants have evolved numerous strategies to acclimate to changes in environmental temperature. However, the molecular basis of this acclimation remains largely unclear. In this study we identified a tRNA His guanylyltransferase, AET1, which contributes to the modification of pre-tRNA His and is required for normal growth under high-temperature conditions in rice. Interestingly, AET1 possibly interacts with both RACK1A and eIF3h in the endoplasmic reticulum. Notably, AET1 can directly bind to OsARF mRNAs including the uORFs of OsARF19 and OsARF23, indicating that AET1 is associated with translation regulation. Furthermore, polysome profiling assays suggest that the translational status remains unaffected in the aet1 mutant, but that the translational efficiency of OsARF19 and OsARF23 is reduced; moreover, OsARF23 protein levels are obviously decreased in the aet1 mutant under high temperature, implying that AET1 regulates auxin signaling in response to high temperature. Our findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms whereby AET1 regulates the environmental temperature response in rice by playing a dual role in tRNA modification and translational control., (Copyright © 2019 The Author. Objective: To explore the efficacy and safety of Yun's optimized pelvic floor training (OPFT) therapy for idiopathic moderate overactive bladder (OAB) with female sexual dysfunction (FSD) in young and middle-aged women., Methods: Eighty 25－45 years old women with idiopathic moderate OAB companied by FSD were randomized into an experimental and a control group of equal number, the former treated by 6 weeks of Yun's OPFT therapy, followed by a 2-week washout period and then another 6 weeks of traditional pelvic floor muscle exercises (PFME), while the latter by 6 weeks of traditional PFME, followed by a 2-week washout period also and then another 6 weeks of Yun's OPFT. At 0, 6 and 14 weeks, we recorded the scores on overactive bladder symptoms (OABS), patient perception of bladder condition (PPBC), Urogenital Distress Inventory (UDI-6) and Incontinence Impact Questionnaire-7 (IIQ-7), pelvic floor muscle strength, voided volume (VV), average urinary flow rate (Qavg), maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax) and postvoid residual urine volume (PVR), female sexual function index (FSFI), sexual satisfaction of the male partners and adverse events, and compared the parameters obtained between the two groups of patients., Results: Thirty-eight of the patients in the experimental group and 29 controls completed the experiment. There were no statistically significant differences in the baseline data between the two groups (P > 0.05). After 6 and 14 weeks of treatment, the effectiveness rate was decreased from 71% to 58% in the experimental group, but increased from 45% to 72% in the control. Significant improvement was achieved in the experimental group in the OABS, PPBC, UDI-6 and IIQ-7 scores, pelvic floor muscle strength, VV, Qavg, Qmax, FSFI and sexual satisfaction of the male partners at 6 weeks as compared with the baseline (P < 0.05), and even more significant at 14 weeks than at 6 (P < 0.05), and so was it in the control group in the PPBC and IIQ-7 scores, VV, Qmax and sexual satisfaction of the male partners at 6 weeks (P < 0.05), and more significant in the OABS, PPBC, UDI-6 and IIQ-7 scores, pelvic floor muscle strength, FSFI and sexual satisfaction of the male partners at 14 than at 6 weeks (P < 0.05). The patients of the experimental group showed remarkably more improvement than the controls in the OABS, PPBC, UDI-6 and IIQ-7 scores, pelvic floor muscle strength, FSFI and sexual satisfaction of the male partners at 6 weeks (P < 0.05), while the control group exhibited significantly better improved OABS, PPBC, UDI-6 and IIQ-7 scores, pelvic floor muscle strength, VV, Qmax, PVR and FSFI than the experimental group at 14 weeks (P < 0.05). No serious adverse reactions were observed during the treatment., Conclusions: Yun's OPFT therapy can improve the symptoms of moderate OAB with FSD in young and middle-aged women, with significantly better effects than traditional pelvic floor muscle exercises.

Plants both generate and shed organs throughout their lifetime. Cell separation is in function during opening of anthers to release pollen; floral organs are detached after pollination when they have served their purpose; unfertilized flowers are shed; fruits and seeds are abscised from the mother plant to secure the propagation of new generations. Organ abscission takes place in specialized abscission zone (AZ) cells where the middle lamella between adjacent cell files is broken down. The plant hormone ethylene has a well-documented promoting effect on abscission, but mutation in ethylene receptor genes in Arabidopsis thaliana only delays the abscission process. Microarray and RNA sequencing have identified a large number of genes differentially expressed in the AZs, especially genes encoding enzymes involved in cell wall remodelling and disassembly. Mutations in such genes rarely give a phenotype, most likely due to functional redundancy. In contrast, mutation in the INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION ( IDA ) blocks floral organ abscission in Arabidopsis. IDA encodes a small peptide that signals through the leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinases HAESA (HAE) and HAE-LIKE2 (HSL2) to control floral organ abscission and facilitate lateral root emergence. Untimely abscission is a severe problem in many crops, and in a more applied perspective, it is of interest to investigate whether IDA-HAE/HSL2 is involved in other cell separation processes and other species. Genes encoding IDA and HSL2 orthologues have been identified in all orders of flowering plants. Angiosperms have had enormous success, with species adapted to all kinds of environments, adaptations which include variation with respect to which organs they shed. Here we review, from an evolutionary perspective, the properties of the IDA-HAE/HSL2 signaling module and the evidence for its hypothesized involvement in various cell separation processes in angiosperms.

Although spice extracts are well known to exhibit antibacterial properties, there is lack of a comprehensive evaluation of the antibacterial effect of spices against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In the present study, ethanolic extracts from a total of 67 spices were comprehensively investigated for their in vitro antibacterial activities by agar well diffusion against two common food-borne bacteria, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enteritidis, with multi-drug resistance. Results showed that S. aureus was generally more sensitive to spice extracts than S. enteritidis . Of the 67 spice extracts, 38 exhibited antibacterial activity against drug-resistant S. aureus , while only four samples were effective on drug-resistant S. enteritidis . In addition, 11 spice extracts with inhibition zones greater than 15 mm were further verified for their broad-spectrum antibacterial properties using another 10 drug-resistant S. aureus strains. It was found that five spice extracts, including galangal, fructus galangae, cinnamon, yellow mustard seed, and rosemary, exhibited the highest antibacterial capacity. Further cytotoxicity of these 11 spices was determined and LC 50 values were found to be more than 100 μg/mL except for galangal, rosemary, and sage, whose LC 50 values were 9.32 ± 0.83, 19.77 ± 2.17, and 50.54 ± 2.57, respectively. Moreover, the antioxidant activities (ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) values) and total phenolic content (TPC) of spice extracts were determined to establish possible correlations with the antibacterial activity. Although the antibacterial effect was positively correlated with the antioxidant activities and TPC, the correlation was weak ( r < 0.5), indicating that the antibacterial activity could also be attributed to other components besides antioxidant polyphenols in the tested spice extracts. In conclusion, dietary spices are good natural sources of antibacterial agents to fight against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, with potential applications as natural food preservatives and natural alternatives to antibiotics in animal feeding., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest.

Background: Transforaminal percutaneous endoscopic lumbar discectomy (TF-PELD) is a minimally invasive technique with high radiation exposure. The purpose of this study was to compare radiation exposure of ultrasound-guided TF-PELD with fluoroscopy-guided TF-PELD., Methods: In this prospective randomized controlled clinical trial, 60 patients with lumbar disc herniation were enrolled and randomly assigned to 2 groups (30 cases in each group): the ultrasound-guided group or the fluoroscopy-guided group. The radiation exposure, fluoroscopy time, and visual analog scale score were recorded. The number of possible operations per year within the yearly occupational exposure limit (OEL) was calculated. We also recorded the adverse events to evaluate the safety of ultrasound-guided TF-PELD., Results: In 30 patients from the ultrasound-guided group, the lumbar disc structure was clearly visible under ultrasound guidance. The effective dose to surgeons and radiation dose to patients were 1.7 ± 0.4 and 25.2 ± 4.9 μSv in the ultrasound-guided group and 9.0 ± 2.5 and 127.4 ± 27.1 μSv in the fluoroscopy-guided group (P < 0.05), respectively. The fluoroscopy time was 2.6 ± 0.5 seconds in the ultrasound-guided group and 127.3 ± 29.5 seconds in the fluoroscopy-guided group (P < 0.05). A surgeon with shielding devices could treat 5556 cases per year in the fluoroscopy-guided group before exceeding the OEL for whole-body radiation, whereas they could treat 29,412 cases in the ultrasound-guided group. No difference between groups was detected in postoperative visual analog scale score (P > 0.58). No serious adverse event was found in any patient., Conclusions: Ultrasound-guided TF-PELD could decrease radiation exposure to surgeons and patients, without serious adverse events. The Huajian gold deposit is one of the largest hydrothermal intrusion-related gold deposits in eastern Hebei Province, located in the northern margin of the North China Craton (NCC). The mineralization in this district displays a close spatial association with the shoshonitic Niuxinshan intrusive complex (NIC), which contributes to the characterization of the metallogeny associated with convergent margin magmatism. In the current study, new geochronological and geochemical data are combined with previously published isotopic data, obtained from the granitic rocks in the NIC, to constrain the timing of the district's tectonic setting transformation and determine its bearing on regional metallogeny. The new geochronological data constrain the timing of the tectonic transformation between 155 and 185 Ma. The NIC's granitic rocks can be geochemically subdivided into two groups. One group's geochemical signature exhibits steep rare earth element (REE) patterns with negligible Eu anomalies, lower Yb, higher Sr, and negative Nb-Ta-Ti (NTT) anomalies, which indicate a volcanic-arc environment with a thickened crust in a convergent setting. The other group exhibits flat REE patterns with obvious negative Eu anomalies, higher Yb, lower Sr, and weak NTT anomalies, which indicate an intra-plate extensional environment with a thinning crust. Combining geochronologic and isotopic data, the mineralization is Late Jurassic (~155 Ma). This is interpreted to be genetically related to the crystallization of the shallow crustal-sourced portions of this complex. Additionally, a tectonic model is presented that provides a plausible explanation for the abundant polymetallic mineralization that occurs in the northern margin of the NCC after 155 Ma., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

The high-efficiency capture of Tobacco Specific Nitrosamines by Hβ zeolite in solution is reported for the first time, along with the adsorption of 4-methylnitrosamino-1-3-pyridyl-1-butanone in aqueous solution. Different from other zeolites such as NaZSM-5, the specific pore size of Hβ exerted a crucial function endowing the zeolite a higher removal of TSNA and selectivity of NNK. The adsorption thermodynamics of NNK by Hβ in aqueous adsorption was fitted to Temkin adsorption model with a linearly decreasing isosteric heat of adsorption.
