Abstract

Sn(1-x)In(x)Te is a possible candidate for topological superconductivity. Previous work has shown that substitution of In for Sn in the topological crystalline insulator SnTe results in superconductivity, with the transition temperature, Tc, growing with In concentration. We have performed a systematic investigation of Sn(1-x)In(x)Te for a broad range of x, synthesizing single crystals (by a modified floating zone method) as well as polycrystalline samples. The samples have been characterized by x-ray diffraction, resistivity, and magnetization. For the single crystals, the maximum Tc is obtained at x=0.45 with a value of of 4.5 K, as determined by the onset of diamagnetism., Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures; revised version

Abstract

If there is a fuzzy relation ... between two spaces U and V, the fuzzy approximations in both spaces based on ... are widely studied, and they basically reflect only the influence from one space to another. In this paper, on each space of U and V, two new fuzzy relations are derived from ..., a positive low-value relation and a conservative high-value relation, to reflect the interaction and feedback between the two spaces. So, the fuzzy approximations based on them can reflect the combination of the action and the reaction from one space to another. Therefore, two spaces U and V are closely accompanied, and (U, V, ...) is a whole, so it is called a fuzzy accompanied approximation space (FAAS). In an FAAS, the properties of the fuzzy approximation models on each space are studied, the relationships between fuzzy approximation models of two spaces are researched, and examples to show how the approximation operator models in the FAAS to solve practical problems from multiple perspectives are also illustrated. More importantly, when the fuzzy relation ... is a binary relation R or the two spaces are the same, the special cases of FAAS are investigated and some important new models and new results are obtained, which add new ideas and methods to the current research. 9. EFFECTS OF STRAW RETURN AND BIOCHAR APPLICATION ON SOIL NUTRIENTS AND OSMOTIC REGULATION IN COTTON UNDER DIFFERENT SOIL SALINITY LEVELS.

Abstract

To clarify the effects of straw return and biochar application on the amelioration of soils with different salinity levels and cotton growth, in this soil column simulation test, straw and biochar were applied to soils with different salinity levels (1.5 (S1), 5 (S2) and 10 (S3) g/kg), with application rates equal to the same amount of carbon (two carbon levels: 6 t/hm² of straw (C1) = 2.25 t/hm² of biochar (B1); 12 t/hm² of straw (C2) = 4.5 t/hm² of biochar (B2)). Then, changes in soil physicochemical properties and cotton physiology were determined. The results showed that straw return and biochar application reduced soil salinity at S1, S2, and S3 levels. Besides, both of them increased soil water, total nitrogen, organic matter, available phosphorus, and available potassium contents, but there was no difference between S3 soil and S1 soil and between S3 soil and S2 soil (p > 0.05). Straw return and biochar application also increased chlorophyll and soluble sugar contents in cotton leaves (p < 0.05), and decreased the relative conductivity and malondialdehyde content in S1 and S2 soils (p < 0.05). However, in S3 soil, there was no difference between C1 treatments and CK and between B1 treatments and CK (p > 0.05). Thus, straw return and biochar application can improve the physicochemical properties of saline soil and regulate osmolytes in cotton, but the amelioration effect of low application rates on high-salinity soils is insignificant (p > 0.05). 30. Muscle-derived stem cells in silk fibroin hydrogels promotes muscle regeneration and angiogenesis in sheep models: an experimental study.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Silk fibroin (SF) hydrogels are of high interest in tissue engineering. However, angiogenesis is one of the major challenges in tissue regeneration and repair. In this study, we present a simple and effective method to develop a 1,2-Dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylglycerol sodium salt (DMPG)-SF hydrogel. The SF hydrogels had no immunogenicity and approached natural tissues. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The SF scaffolds were first prepared from Bombyx mori silkworms and DMPG. The SF scaffold was seeded with muscle-derived stem cells derived from sheep embryo and implanted in the tibialis anterior muscle of mature sheep. Gelation time, H&E staining, and histochemistry were conducted and observed. The suitability of the hydrogels for 3D cell culture was assessed by living cell stain CM-Dil. RESULTS: The results showed that the SF hydrogels resembled the mechanical properties of natural soft tissues better. The results of H&E staining and histochemistry revealed that the degradation rate showed an S-type change, and muscle regeneration and angiogenesis were clearly visible. Adverse effects were not observed in the sheep models. CONCLUSIONS: DMPG-induced SF hydrogels can be successfully used for in situ cell encapsulation. Abstract

The geometrical structures, phase stabilities, electron energy band structures, electron density of states, and atom recombination together with the electron conduction behaviors of the sandwiched Ca2Co2O5 with external stress of 1 GPa are intensively studied by the density functional theory method. The studying results show that the symmetry remains undisturbed; the strain to the stress response is anisotropic. The strain of microarchitecture induced by external stress is also anisotropic. There is stronger covalent binding between Co and O. The binding between Co and O within CdI2 like CoO2 is very much even covalent, and it is weakened under external stress. But the covalent Co-O binding within the rock salt like CaCoO layer is enhanced. The Ca-O binding strength is insensitive to external stress. An energy gap of 0.1 eV below Fermi level for the spin-up electron band disappears, and the two energy gaps are narrowed for the spin-down electron bands. The p orbital electrons form primarily the bands below Fermi level and the d orbital electrons form primarily the bands above Fermi level. The transitions from p orbital electrons to d orbital electrons produce the conduction. The CdI2 like CoO2 layer has been enhanced in terms of participating in the conduction properties with external stress of 1 GPa, and the capability of Co is enhanced while the capability of O is decreased. Abstract

OBJECTIVE: Dys-regulated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in the cell growth of several malignancies and their aggressive phenotypes. LncRNA DBH-AS1 plays an important role in the advancement of various malignant tumors, but its contribution to non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is still unexplored. This study intends to elucidate the role of the regulatory network of lncRNA DBH-AS1 in NSCLC progression. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The LncDBH-AS1 expression in 32 paired NSCLC patients' tissue samples and NSCLC cell lines were determined by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The role of LncDBH-AS1 in NSCLC was investigated through cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and colony formation assay in vitro. Besides, the interaction between LncDBH-AS1 and miR-155 was also analyzed. RESULTS: The DBH-AS1 expression was significantly down-regulated in NSCLC cell lines and tissue samples. Decreased DBH-AS1 levels promoted the in vitro proliferation of the NSCLC cells. The mechanism was that DBH-AS1 regulated AXIN1 expression by sponging miR-155 in NSCLC cell lines. Importantly, LncDBH-AS1 might inhibit WNT/β-CATENIN activation in NSCLC cells. CONCLUSIONS: The progression of NSCLC is facilitated by DBH-AS1 via miR-155 interaction and up-regulation of AXIN1 expression. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the most aggressive breast cancer, and thus, has limited treatment options. Neuropilin1 (NRP1) is a multi-functional transmembrane protein that interacts with a number of signaling receptors and plays an important role in cancer progression. Previous studies demonstrated that the expression of NRP1 is activated and promotes the progression of breast cancer particularly in TNBC compared to other molecular subtypes; however, whether or not the level of NRP1 expression is related to the progression of TNBC warrants further study. In the current study, we determined the expression and function of NRP1 and evaluated the clinical significance of NRP1 in patients with TNBC. In addition, we determined whether or not an NRP1 antagonist potentiates the inhibitory effects of paclitaxel (PTX) in patients with TNBC. In our clinical study, NRP1 had higher expression in TNBC tissues than non-TNBC tissues at the same stage, and NRP1 was an independent prognostic factor. Specifically, the high expression of NRP1 was associated with shorter survival in TNBC patients. In addition, TNBC cells treated with NRP1 antagonist significantly potentiated the effect of PTX on cell proliferation, cell migration, and apoptosis. Our findings suggest that NRP1 expression can act as an independent prognostic factor for TNBC patients, and the combination of PTX and an NRP1 antagonist may be an effective treatment regimen for TNBC. 39. LncRNA WTAPP1 promotes proliferation of laryngeal carcinoma cells through regulating microRNA-592.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this work was to investigate the mechanism by which long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) WTAPP1 promotes the malignant progression of laryngeal cancer. PATIENTS AND METHODS: In this study, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) examined the expression of lncRNA WTAPP1 in 49 pairs of tumor tissue specimens and paracancerous normal ones collected from laryngeal cancer patients. Subsequently, in the laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma cell lines AMC-HN-8 and Hep-2, WTAPP1 overexpression and knockdown vectors were constructed using lentivirus, and cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), cell colony formation and 5-ethynyl-2’-deoxyuridine (EdU) assays were carried out to analyze the impact of lncRNA WTAPP1 on the function of laryngeal cancer cells. Finally, Luciferase reporting assay and recovery experiments were carried out to further explore whether lncRNA WTAPP1 has an impact on the malignant progression of laryngeal cancer via modulating microRNA-592. RESULTS: QRT-PCR results revealed a significantly higher expression of lncRNA WTAPP1 in tumor tissues of patients with laryngeal cancer than that in adjacent normal ones. Compared with patients with low expression of WTAPP1, those with higher expression had a more advanced pathological stage. Meanwhile, the proliferation ability of cells in sh-WTAPP1 group was remarkably attenuated when compared with that in sh-NC group. In addition, microRNA-592 and WTAPP1 mRNA levels were found negatively correlated in laryngeal carcinoma tissue specimens. Luciferase reporter gene assay indicated that WTAPP1 can be targeted by microRNA-592 through certain binding sites. Moreover, we demonstrated through some recovery experiments that WTAPP1 can indeed serve as an oncogene accelerating the malignant progression of laryngeal cancer through the modulation of microRNA-592. CONCLUSIONS: LncRNA WTAPP was markedly highly expressed both in laryngeal carcinoma tissues and cell lines, which was also found to be closely relevant to the pathological stage of laryngeal cancer patients. 43. LncRNA CADM1-AS1 serves as a new prognostic biomarker for gastric cancer.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the expression of the long non-coding RNA CADM1- AS1 (lncRNA CADM1-AS1) in gastric cancer and its clinical significance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The real time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was performed to detect the expression difference of lncRNA CADM1-AS1 between gastric cancer and its adjacent normal tissues. Then, the correlation between the expression of CADM1-AS1 in gastric cancer and the clinicopathological characteristics was analyzed by the Chi-square test. Moreover, the potential of lncRNA CADM1-AS1 in predicting the prognosis of patients with GC after the operation was assessed by the Log-rank test and the Cox's proportional hazards regression model. RESULTS: The expression of lncRNA CADM1- AS1 was significantly decreased in tumor tissues. According to the mean expression of lncRNA CADM1-AS1, the patients were divided into a high expression group and a low expression group, and the expression of lncRNA CADM1- AS1 in gastric cancer was significantly correlated with tumor differentiation, N stage, M stage, and TNM stage. Moreover, the gastric cancer patients with higher expression of lncRNA CADM1- AS1 had a statistically better overall survival (OS) time and progression-free survival (PFS) time. In univariate analyses and multivariate analyses, the expression of lncRNA CADM1-AS1 was an independent prognosis index of patients with gastric cancer. Abstract

Accurate and rapid assessment of soil salinity is a prerequisite for monitoring and management of soil salinization. Electromagnetic induction technology (EMI) has been broadly applied for scientific research and soil salinity monitoring. In this study, the path analysis method was used to analyze the influence of the soil properties of different soil layers and groundwater (GW) characteristics on apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) values measured at different heights of an EM38. The results showed that for all soil layers, the standard electrical conductivity of a saturated soil extract (ECe) was the most important factor affecting ECa measured at different heights. Both soil moisture content and GW characteristics (GW depth, GW conductivity) had an obvious effect on ECa, whereas the soil clay content had little effect. The reliability of ECe prediction models for different soil layers was improved to various degrees by the addition of soil water content and GW characteristics as auxiliary factors. The ECe prediction model was validated with the coefficient of determination (R²) between the predicted and measured ECe values of each layer reaching more than 0.70. 45. MiR-98-5p regulates proliferation and metastasis of MCF-7 breast cancer cells by targeting Gab2.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the mechanism of miR-98- 5p in influencing the malignant proliferation and metastasis capacities of breast cancer cells. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to detect the expression level of miR-98-5p and GRB2-associated- binding protein 2 (Gab2) in breast cancer samples and cells. On-line target gene prediction software and Dual-Luciferase reporter assay were used to predict and verify the target genes of miR-98-5p, respectively. Cell proliferation was measured by MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol- 2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay. Meanwhile, migration and invasion abilities, as well as the changes of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) after transfection were detected by transwell assay and Western blot assay, respectively. RESULTS: Compared with adjacent non-tumor tissues and MCF-10A cells, the expression level of miR-98-5p in tumor tissues and MCF-7 cells was significantly declined, whereas Gab2 was markedly up-regulated. Besides, Gab2 was predicted as a target gene of miR-98-5p. Subsequent experiments indicated that the proliferation, migration, invasion and EMT of MCF-7 cells transfected with miR-98-5p were significantly inhibited. However, up-regulation of Gab2 attenuated the biological function of miR-98-5p on malignant abilities of breast cancer cells. CONCLUSIONS: We showed that miR-98-5p served as anti-oncogene in breast cancer, which might provide a new therapeutic target for its treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a measurement of the cosmic ray (e^+ + e^-) flux in the range 0.5 GeV to 1 TeV based on the analysis of 10.6 million (e^+ + e^-) events collected by AMS. The statistics and the resolution of AMS provide a precision measurement of the flux. The flux is smooth and reveals new and distinct information. Above 30.2 GeV, the flux can be described by a single power law with a spectral index γ = −3.170 +/- 0.008 (stat + syst) +/- 0.008 (energy scale)

Abstract

A precise measurement of the proton flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1 GV to 1.8 TV is presented based on 300 million events. Knowledge of the rigidity dependence of the proton flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. We present the detailed variation with rigidity of the flux spectral index for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at high rigidities.

Abstract

Knowledge of the precise rigidity dependence of the helium flux is important in understanding the origin, acceleration, and propagation of cosmic rays. A precise measurement of the helium flux in primary cosmic rays with rigidity (momentum/charge) from 1.9 GV to 3 TV based on 50 million events is presented and compared to the proton flux. The detailed variation with rigidity of the helium flux spectral index is presented for the first time. The spectral index progressively hardens at rigidities larger than 100 GV. The rigidity dependence of the helium flux spectral index is similar to that of the proton spectral index though the magnitudes are different. Remarkably, the spectral index of the proton to helium flux ratio increases with rigidity up to 45 GV and then becomes constant; the flux ratio above 45 GV is well described by a single power law.
