Abstract

Abstract The emergence of COVID-19 dramatically changed social behavior across societies and contexts. Here we study whether social norms also changed. Specifically, we study this question for cultural tightness (the degree to which societies generally have strong norms), specific social norms (e.g. stealing, hand washing), and norms about enforcement, using survey data from 30,431 respondents in 43 countries recorded before and in the early stages following the emergence of COVID-19. Using variation in disease intensity, we shed light on the mechanisms predicting changes in social norm measures. We find evidence that, after the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, hand washing norms increased while tightness and punishing frequency slightly decreased but observe no evidence for a robust change in most other norms. Thus, at least in the short term, our findings suggest that cultures are largely stable to pandemic threats except in those norms, hand washing in this case, that are perceived to be directly relevant to dealing with the collective threat.

Abstract

The relationship between dispositions towards critical thinking, creative-innovative performance, self-efficacy and teaching practice was assessed in Peruvian teacher trainers from the Amazonian region of San Martin. Direct and big relationships were found between all variables. A model that explained 42% of the variance of teaching practice is presented, where dispositions towards critical thinking and creative and innovative performance have a direct effect on teacher self-efficacy. In addition, teacher self-efficacy fully mediates the relationship between dispositions toward critical thinking, and partially mediates the relationship between creative-innovative performance and teaching practices. Likewise, results show differences according to sex, work experience, specialization and work place. It is suggested to include other actors to get a holistic view of the teachers’ trainer capacities.

Abstract

El diseño de programas de actividades orientados a desarrollar los talentos del alumnado en los primeros años de escolaridad es un tema de actualidad en la literatura educativa. El presente estudio persigue encontrar evidencias que permitan aplicar un programa de enriquecimiento en línea, orientado a potenciar la motivación y la implicación académica del alumnado con altas capacidades intelectuales (AACC). La muestra del estudio se compone de 60 alumnos/as con edades comprendidas entre los 10 y 12 años, provenientes de un centro de Educación Primaria de Lima (Perú). Los instrumentos utilizados para la evaluación de las variables han sido la escala SAAS-R (School Attitude Assessment-Revised) y una rúbrica de elaboración propia, revisada por expertos. Finalmente se discuten los resultados y se concluye con algunas propuestas para la mejora del programa.

The present study summarizes the validity of a multi-method integrity test developed to measure integrity and counterproductive work behaviors (CWB) in personnel selection of a Peruvian sample. This instrument has been thoroughly studied in other cultural contexts, establishing its validity in predicting counter-productive behaviors. In order to study external validity, two criteria were used: (a) The Counterproductive Work Behavior Checklist (CWB-C) and (b) a supervisor evaluation questionnaire. The criterion validity of the Peruvian Spanish version was studied with a sample of 194 employed students, 86 male (44.3%) and 108 (55.7%) female. Abstract

This theoretical review aims to integrate state-of-the-art learning motivation theoretical concepts within the context of gifted and talent development models for native children living in Latin America and the Caribbean sociocultural diverse societies. Motivation as a determinant factor and a promoter of gifted achievement is analyzed. Also the relation between motivation, outstanding performance and underachievement is discussed and tendencies found in social-emotional development of the gifted linked to motivation are explored. Final remarks are given on the significant role of motivation in the achievement of gifted and talented children living under diverse socio-cultural influences that bias their performance on standardized measures. Recommendations highlight the importance of further research, in order to reach a convergence of theoretical and practical elements needed to promote Latin American children's talent.

¿Tienen los programas de identificación del talento y la superdotación bases científicas sólidas, justas e imparciales? ¿Son los programas de intervención para talentosos y superdotados efectivos? Las presiones financieras que ejercen las fundaciones que brindan apoyo económico, los cambios recientes en las leyes, así como las consideraciones respecto a la multiculturalidad están forzando a los psicólogos y educadores alrededor del mundo a confrontar estos cuestionamientos. La presente revisión discute los cambios que han empezado a alterar este campo de estudio en América Latina y en especial en el Perú. Se presenta un análisis de estudios empíricos en poblaciones multiculturales, así como una reflexión sobre el impacto de los programas de intervención, a nivel de capacitación docente y de enriquecimiento cognitivo/afectivo, que se desarrollan en la región.

Un gran número de alumnos en nuestros centros educativos posee habilidades de aprendizaje extraordinarias y talentos especiales en tal grado que sus necesidades educativas no logran ser totalmente cubiertas en los programas escolares regulares. Los programas educativos para niños talentosos son una parte lógica y esencial de cualquier programa escolar que reconozca y respete las diferencias individuales entre sus alumnos. La filosofía que guía esta propuesta se basa en que: (1) el niño es un ser humano único que posee habilidades y necesidades educativas individualizadas y (2) es responsabilidad de nuestros centros educativos primero identificar estas necesidades y habilidades y luego proveer el tipo de experiencias educativas que tiendan a satisfacer las necesidades individuales y desarrollar las habilidades de cada niño al máximo de sus potencialidades.

Se estudia la relación entre estilos de aprendizaje y rendimiento académico en universitarios de educación a distancia en tres etapas. En la primera se establecen las preferencias de los estilos de aprendizaje; en la segunda etapa se establece la relación entre los estilos de aprendizaje y el rendimiento académico; y en la tercera se analizan las relaciones entre los estilos de aprendizaje, los hábitos de estudio y el ambiente socio académico y tecnológico, con el rendimiento académico. Los resultados indican que en los estudiantes de pregrado predominan los estilos de aprendizaje teórico y activo, mientras que no se encuentran preferencias en los estudiantes de posgrado. Se observa relación entre los estilos de aprendizaje y el rendimiento académico en los niveles de pregrado y posgrado y se incluyen recomendaciones para consolidar la educación a distancia en el espacio de la enseñanza superior.

Se analizan las definiciones actuales sobre el talento y la sobredotación, con énfasis en la variable motivación, presentándose diferentes posturas sobre la influencia de la motivación en la génesis de la sobredotación y en el desarrollo del talento. Posteriormente se analiza la influencia de la motivación en el desempeño sobresaliente, en el bajo rendimiento, así como en el desarrollo socioemocional del sobredotado. Se presenta una visión panorámica de los logros y desafíos del Perú en el desarrollo del talento y la sobredotación, a nivel de conceptualización, identificación e intervención en contextos multiculturales y de pobreza. Se propone un proyecto económico y viable de fomento al desarrollo del talento en el Perú dentro del sistema educativo regular, a lo largo de los tres niveles educativos: primaria, secundaria y terciaria. Finalmente, se incluyen conclusiones y recomendaciones para el desarrollo de políticas de estado de fomento al talento en el Perú.

Se describen las características de personalidad de niños talentosos en riesgo según el Psicodiagnóstico de Rorschach. Los participantes fueron 55 niños (27 talentosos y 28 no talentosos) de 9-12 años de edad, seleccionados para un estudio previo. Los resultados revelan que los talentosos exhiben las siguientes características: (a) se aproximan a las situaciones a partir de la auto-reflexión, (b) poseen recursos afectivos sofisticados, (c) exhiben niveles significativos de iniciativa y creatividad, (d) tienden al perfeccionismo, (e) tratan de asumir el control de las situaciones, (f ) son poco convencionales (h) exhiben elevados niveles de sensibilidad, (i) tienden a la oposición y (j) poseen recursos de introspección. Asimismo, se observan características esperadas en contextos de pobreza, tales como cautela y bajo nivel de confianza, elevados niveles de estrés y tendencia hacia la depresión. Se proponen recomendaciones para su atención así como el desarrollo de líneas de investigación interdisciplinarias.

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to provide a different perspective on talent development, based on the ethnic-linguistic diversity of the understudied Andean countries. The current status of gifted education and talent development in the population living under highly vulnerable conditions of Andean society will be explored, under the frame of a comprehensive analysis about the needs of the gifted children in Latin America. Multicultural diversity in the Andean societies may easily lead to polarization due to the poverty conditions in which the majority lives. In order to make a significant contribution, a developmental, cross-cultural, inclusive approach is critical to conceptualize gifted education, and to explain talent development in this part of the world. Studies about the identification and differentiation programs for the gifted are analyzed, and the status of young scholars coming from low socio-economic and ethnic minority groups will be discussed. Results of on-going studies about variables related to gifted performance will be included. Plus, the challenges of gifted education in Latin America that underline the advocacy efforts to serve the indigenous population with equity will be presented. Implications for future research and public policies to serve the gifted students are also considered.

Abstract

The maximization principle—that people aspire to the highest possible level of something good if all practical constraints are removed—is a common yet untested assumption about human nature. We predict that in holistic cultures—where contradiction, change, and context are emphasized—ideal states of being for the self will be more moderate than in other cultures. In two studies ( Ns = 2,392 and 6,239), we asked this question: If participants could choose their ideal level of happiness, pleasure, freedom, health, self-esteem, longevity, and intelligence, what level would they choose? Consistent with predictions, results showed that maximization was less pronounced in holistic cultures; members of holistic cultures aspired to less happiness, pleasure, freedom, health, self-esteem, longevity, and IQ than did members of other cultures. In contrast, no differences emerged on ideals for society. The studies show that the maximization principle is not a universal aspect of human nature and that there are predictable cultural differences in people’s notions of perfection.

Abstract

Norm enforcement may be important for resolving conflicts and promoting cooperation. However, little is known about how preferred responses to norm violations vary across cultures and across domains. In a preregistered study of 57 countries (using convenience samples of 22,863 students and non-students), we measured perceptions of the appropriateness of various responses to a violation of a cooperative norm and to atypical social behaviors. Our findings highlight both cultural universals and cultural variation. We find a universal negative relation between appropriateness ratings of norm violations and appropriateness ratings of responses in the form of confrontation, social ostracism and gossip. Moreover, we find the country variation in the appropriateness of sanctions to be consistent across different norm violations but not across different sanctions. Specifically, in those countries where use of physical confrontation and social ostracism is rated as less appropriate, gossip is rated as more appropriate.

Abstract

WOS: 000442930300311, PubMed ID: 29955865, Olfaction plays an important role in human social communication, including multiple domains in which people often rely on their sense of smell in the social context. The importance of the sense of smell and its role can however vary inter-individually and culturally. Despite the growing body of literature on differences in olfactory performance or hedonic preferences across the globe, the aspects of a given culture as well as culturally universal individual differences affecting odor awareness in human social life remain unknown. Here, we conducted a large-scale analysis of data collected from 10 794 participants from 52 study sites from 44 countries all over the world. The aim of our research was to explore the potential individual and country-level correlates of odor awareness in the social context. The results show that the individual characteristics were more strongly related than country-level factors to self-reported odor awareness in different social contexts. A model including individual-level predictors (gender, age, material situation, education, and preferred social distance) provided a relatively good fit to the data, but adding country-level predictors (Human Development Index, population density, and average temperature) did not improve model parameters. Although there were some cross-cultural differences in social odor awareness, the main differentiating role was played by the individual differences. Abstract

The history of intellectual assessment with children and youth in Peru is presented from the foundation of scientific psychology in Peru until now. Current practices are affected by the multicultural ethnolinguistic diversity of the country, the quality of the different training programs, as well as by Peruvian regulations for becoming an academic or a practitioner in Peru. Fitness of intelligence models and intellectual assessment of the Peruvian population are discussed. Credentials for administering intelligence tests and current practices that provoke controversy are also discussed. Future directions involve discussions on changing attitudes toward education accountability and social awareness in relation to intellectual assessment, legislation to foster better training for psychologists, and the need to consolidate theoretical models that include the context from a systemic perspective, as well as models that consider intelligence as a developmental variable. Abstract

This study explores how secondary school students perceive high-performing potential classmates. A total of 1,794 seventh- and 10th-grade students from five countries completed a questionnaire measuring their expectations of hypothetical male and female high-performing classmates in three categories: intellectual ability, positive social qualities, and popularity. Across the five countries represented in this study, analyses of variance indicated that students did not report negative attitudes toward the three potential characteristics of a hypothetical gifted peer. Vietnamese students in particular reported more positive observations about the hypothetical classmate than their Australian, Peruvian, South Korean, and Spanish counterparts. Differing cross-national attitudes toward high-performing peers and the implications therein are discussed.

Abstract

WOS: 000399920900008, Human spatial behavior has been the focus of hundreds of previous research studies. However, the conclusions and generalizability of previous studies on interpersonal distance preferences were limited by some important methodological and sampling issues. The objective of the present study was to compare preferred interpersonal distances across the world and to overcome the problems observed in previous studies. We present an extensive analysis of interpersonal distances over a large data set (N = 8,943 participants from 42 countries). We attempted to relate the preferred social, personal, and intimate distances observed in each country to a set of individual characteristics of the participants, and some attributes of their cultures. Our study indicates that individual characteristics (age and gender) influence interpersonal space preferences and that some variation in results can be explained by temperature in a given region. Abstract

Previous empirical studies have yielded inconclusive results about peer perceptions of academically high performing students. The purpose of this study was to investigate students’ perceptions of the intellectual ability, positive social qualities, and popularity of a hypothetical new high performing classmate. Participants were 1060 Vietnamese, South Korean, British, Australian, Peruvian, and Spanish boys and girls in 10th grade. The results revealed that the perceptions of academically high performing classmates differed by country group. Positive perceptions of intellectual ability and social qualities were commonly found in all countries except the two Asian countries (Vietnam and South Korea), where the students reported more neutral views of high performers. In conclusion, it is argued that there is no evidence for possible iatrogenic effects of gifted education programs aiming at high achievements

Abstract

This cross-national scenario based study exam-ined fourth-grade students’ perceptions of high-performing classmates in terms of their ex-pected intellectual abilities, positive social qual-ities and popularity among their peers across seven countries. The overall results show that high academic achievements predominantly lead to positive expectations within the peer group. However, pronounced differences were found between the countries. The results indi-cated that students from Spanish-speaking countries viewed their potential high-perform-ing peers most favorably, followed by students from Australia, the United Kingdom and Ger-many. The least favorable expectations, but by no means negative attitude, were exhibited by students from the two East-Asian countries Ko-rea and Vietnam. In contrast, the respondents’ gender and the gender of the hypothetical suc-cessful classmates had less influence on student perceptions of high-performers. These findings have implications for the educational provision of high performing students in different cross-national contexts.

Abstract

This article examines the proposition that conservatives will be less willing than liberals to apologize and less likely to forgive after receiving an apology. In Study 1, we found evidence for both relationships in a nine-nation survey. In Study 2, participants wrote an open-ended response to a victim of a hypothetical transgression they had committed. More conservative participants were less likely to include apologetic elements in their response. We also tested two underlying mechanisms for the associations: social dominance orientation (SDO) and entity beliefs about human nature. SDO emerged as a stronger and more consistent mediator than entity beliefs. Apologies are theorized to be a rhetorical vehicle for removing power inequities in relationships posttransgression. Consistent with this theorizing, it was those who are relatively high in commitment to equality (i.e., those high in liberal ideology and low in SDO) who are most likely to provide and reward apologies.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore whether and in what ways high-achieving school students’ motivational orientations influence their perceptions of a fictitious future high-achieving classmate. The final sample consisted of the 396 highest achieving students out of a sample from 1794 seventh and tenth graders from five countries: Australia, Peru, South Korea, Spain, and Vietnam. A series of stepwise regression models were used to test the hypothesis that positive perceptions of a high-achieving classmate might be mediated by an approach motivation, but not by an avoidance motivational orientation. The hypothesis was generally confirmed. Learning goal orientation and performance approach motivation predicted positive perceptions of a high-achieving classmate’s intellectual ability, social qualities and popularity among peers, whereas a performance avoidance orientation was usually uncorrelated. However, sporadic exceptions have been found among the participants from Vietnam, South Korea, and Peru.

Abstract

The present study aims to develop significant learning in college students through active and participative learning methods that promote autonomy and self-reflection. Study 1 aims to explore students´ perceptions of the use of clickers in Psychology students. Participants were 60 college students ages 19 to 26 (M = 21.12, SD = 1.47) who answered a 40-item multiple alternative likert-scale with additional open-ended questions. Results revealed perceived benefits (class dynamic, theory review and reinforcement), and perceived uses (debates, experiments, evaluations with immediate reinforcement, and knowledge verification). It is concluded that the use of clickers in undergraduate formation in Psychology is an effective tool to introduce IT to support students´ learning process. Study 2 is an exploratory study using flipped classroom with 5th semester preschool and primary education students, using active methods inside, and outside the classroom. Results revealed that college students tend to internalize better the theoretical concepts, and display better levels of motivation, as well as satisfaction with their achievements. El presente estudio explora metodologías activas y participativas, que fomentan el aprendizaje autónomo y la reflexión sobre el propio proceso de aprendizaje con el uso de las TIC. En el Estudio 1, se utilizaron los dispositivos de respuesta inmediata (clickers) como estrategia pedagógica y de evaluación, en la formación básica de Psicología. 60 estudiantes universitarios, con rango de edad de 19 a 26 (M = 21.12, SD = 1.47), respondieron un cuestionario tipo Likert con 40 preguntas múltiples y también preguntas abiertas, acerca de los beneficios y desventajas percibidas con el uso de los clickers, en la formación en psicología. Los resultados mostraron percepción positiva a nivel de beneficios en las estrategias pedagógicas, facilitando la revisión teórica, el reforzamiento conceptual, los debates en clase, y la verifi- cación inmediata del conocimiento. Se concluye que el uso de los clickers en la formación de pregrado en psicología es una herramienta efectiva para aplicar las TIC en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de nivel universitario. En el Estudio 2, se presentan los resultados de un estudio exploratorio con la aplicación de la estrategia de enseñanza flipped classroom en estudiantes del V ciclo de educación inicial y primaria, a través de una metodología activa dentro y fuera del aula como parte del curso de Psicología del Aprendizaje. Los resultados revelan que los estudiantes interiorizaron mejor los conceptos, mostraron mejores niveles de motivación y estuvieron satisfechos con sus logros. O artigo apresenta um estudo exploratório que surge como parte de um processo reflexivoe planejado a partir do desejo de motivar e promover o desenvolvimento da aprendizagem significativa, com base em metodologias ativas e participativas, que promovam a aprendizagem autônoma e a reflexão sobre os próprios processos da aprendizagem em estudantes universitários. No estudo 1, foram usados como estratégia pedagógica e avaliativa na formação básica da Psicologia, dispositivos de resposta imediata (clickers). 60 estudantes universitários, com idades entre os 19 e 26 anos (M = 21.12, DP = 1.47), responderam um questionário de 40 perguntas com escala de respostas tipo Likert e também perguntas abertas sobre os benefícios e desvantagens do uso dos clickers. Os resultados mostram que o uso dos clickers na formação da graduação em Psicologia é uma ferramenta efetiva para aplicar as TIC nos processos de ensino-aprendizagem de nível universitário. No Estudo 1, apresentam-se os resultados de uma pesquisa exploratória com a aplicação da estratégia de ensino flipped classroom em estudantes do V ciclo de Educação Inicial e Primaria, através de uma metodologia ativa dentro e fora da sala de aula como parte da disciplina de Psicologia da Aprendizagem. Os resultados mostraram que os estudantes interiorizaram melhor osconceitos, expressaram alta motivação e ficaram satisfeitos com suas atuações.
