Gamete traits can vary widely among species, populations and individuals, influencing fertilisation dynamics and overall reproductive fitness. Sexual selection can play an important role in determining the evolution of gamete traits with local environmental conditions determining the strength and direction of sexual selection. Here, we test for signatures of post‐mating selection on gamete traits in relation to population density, and possible interactive effects of population density and sperm concentration on sperm motility and fertilisation rates among natural populations of mussels. Our study shows that males from high‐density populations produce smaller sperm compared with males from low‐density populations, but we detected no effect of population density on egg size. Our results also reveal that females from low‐density populations tended to exhibit lower fertilisation rates across a range of sperm concentrations, although this became less important as sperm concentration increased. Variances in fertilisation success were higher for females than males and the effect of gamete compatibility between males and females increases as sperm concentrations increase. These results suggest that local population density can influence gamete traits and fertilisation dynamics but also highlight the importance of phenotypic plasticity in governing sperm–egg interactions in a highly dynamic selective environment. Concrete infrastructure in coastal waters is increasing. While adding complex habitat and manipulating concrete mixtures to enhance biodiversity have been studied, field investigations of sub-millimetre-scale complexity and substrate colour are lacking. Here, the interacting effects of 'colour' (white, grey, black) and 'microtexture' (smooth, 0.5 mm texture) on colonisation were assessed at three sites in Australia. In Townsville, no effects of colour or microtexture were observed. In Sydney, spirorbid polychaetes occupied more space on smooth than textured tiles, but there was no effect of microtexture on serpulid polychaetes, bryozoans and algae. In Melbourne, barnacles were more abundant on black than white tiles, while serpulid polychaetes showed opposite patterns and ascidians did not vary with treatments. These results suggest that microtexture and colour can facilitate colonisation of some taxa. The context-dependency of the results shows that inclusion of these factors into marine infrastructure designs needs to be carefully considered. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seagrass restoration requires information on a range of factors including site environmental conditions, appropriate planting techniques, and the identification of sites most likely to support seagrass. To address the question of where to focus restoration efforts, a key first step is to identify trends in the spatio‐temporal distribution of seagrasses to identify areas of persistence, loss, and recent gains. Areas of recent recovery (and adjacent areas), can then be targeted by practitioners for assisted recovery and restoration, whilst areas of persistent loss can be avoided. Here we identified the contemporary distribution, density, and species composition of seagrass ecosystems (using Sentinel 2 imagery and supervised object‐based imagery analysis) and integrated these data with historic extents to identify spatio‐temporal trends in seagrass distribution in Western Port, Victoria, Australia. Contemporary classifications demonstrated acceptable accuracies (Overall Accuracy 0.77–0.85, User Accuracy 0.76–0.97) and predicted a contemporary seagrass extent of 222 km2; with 48 km2 of low‐density recovery predicted to have occurred since 1999. Comparisons with historical seagrass extents indicated some seagrass recovery since large‐scale losses in 1983, although some areas of loss were also present. Recovery included a net gain of approximately 95 km2 in the past 20 years and an eastward range expansion; suggesting environmental conditions have improved and are now conducive for restoration efforts in some areas. Results demonstrate that accurate, low‐cost, remote sensing of seagrass ecosystems is possible and show how understanding spatio‐temporal trends can guide the spatial allocation of resources by prioritizing areas for restoration where recovery is beginning to occur. Environmental context: Most human pharmaceutical waste is discharged to the environment. While the presence of pharmaceuticals in freshwater systems is well documented globally, little is known of the impact on marine ecosystems. We measured pharmaceuticals in a marine environment in south-eastern Australia and found pharmaceutical concentrations around 24 000 times higher in benthic flora than in the marine surface waters. We discuss the potential use of seaweeds as biological indicators of pharmaceutical pollution. Rationale: Pharmaceuticals are emerging pollutants of concern with a range of adverse consequences for organisms and ecosystems. Their presence in freshwater and estuarine systems has been well documented, but less is known about their prevalence in open ocean, or their uptake by benthic flora. This preliminary survey of the southern Australian coastline sought to measure the concentrations of key pharmaceuticals in both surface waters and benthic flora. Methodology: This study used LC-MS/MS to measure the concentration carbamazepine, tramadol and venlafaxine in (1) samples from wastewater treatment plants, (2) ocean surface waters and (3) several species of benthic flora. Surface waters and benthic flora were sampled at two sites near waste water treatment plant (WWTP) discharges, and one site away from any discharge. Results: All three pharmaceuticals were detected in surface water samples with their risk assessed (via risk quotient) as medium risk (carbamazepine) or low risk (venlafaxine, tramadol). All three pharmaceuticals were also detected in benthic flora, particularly in brown macroalgae; Tramadol was measured at a maximum of 34.7 ng g−1 in Hormosira banksii , and Venlafaxine was recorded at a maximum of 17.3 ng g−1 in Caulocystis cephalornithos. Discussion: The calculated bioconcentration factors suggest the pharmaceutical concentrations in benthic flora were up to ~24 000 times higher than in surrounding surface water. There was also evidence that proximity to WWTP outfalls influenced the levels of pharmaceuticals in benthic flora. The results suggest that the benthic flora may be suitable bioindicators of pharmaceutical contamination and that the potential impacts of pharmaceutical pollutants in marine ecosystems demand further investigation.
