ABSTRACT: Like many innovations in surgery, implementing enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs in pediatric surgery has lagged behind its adult counterpart. Our institutions have recently made a concerted effort to introduce and implement ERAS widely throughout the Department of Pediatric Surgery, which includes 10 surgical specialties. Our strategy revolved around the early inclusion of all stakeholders, significant educational efforts, and creating a roadmap for development and implementation of ERAS programs. It culminated in the first Canadian pediatric ERAS conference, which was held in Montreal on April 28, 2023, and served as a launching pad for instituting an ERAS culture in our hospital. Throughout the process, we identified specific themes that helped emphasize the rationale for pediatric ERAS programs and kept stakeholders engaged in the efforts. In this paper, we share these strategies and themes, believing they can aid other pediatric institutions seeking to initiate an ERAS culture.Level of evidence: V

AIM: To evaluate accuracy of axis alignment and refractive results of toric phakic intraocular lens (IOL) implantation using a digital imaging system. METHODS: This retrospective study investigated toric implantable collamer lens (ICL) implantation in 30 eyes of 21 patients with myopic astigmatism more than 2.0 D guided with digital imaging system. Data were collected during the first week after phakic IOL implantation. RESULTS: Thirty eyes of 21 patients were included in our study. Patients includes 9 males and 12 females. The mean age of the patients was 26.5±7.1 (range 21-44)y. The mean preoperative manifest astigmatism was 3.2±1.7 (range from 2.25 to 4.75) D. The mean postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UCDVA) were 0.07±0.07 (range from 0.1 to 0.0) logMAR. The mean postoperative residual refractive cylinder was 0.25±0.29 (range 0-0.75) D. Eyes with postoperative residual refractive cylinder of 0.5 D or less represented 80% (24 eyes). The mean postoperative toric IOL misalignment measured by the OPD scan III was 1.9°±1.45° (range from 0 to 5°). CONCLUSION: Image guided system allows accurate alignment of toric ICL. This is associated with good postoperative visual acuity and low residual refractive astigmatism which correlates with the precision of toric phakic IOL alignment.

Calcifying fibrous tumor is a rare benign tumor that occurs in multiple locations, and originates from the subcutaneous and deep soft tissues. There are some reported adult cases of multiple or disseminated calcifying fibrous tumors of the pleura. We are reporting the first case of multiple calcifying fibrous tumors of the pleura in a 15 year old girl presenting with cyclical chest pain, with possible hormonal influence.

Introduction: Precise measurement of corneal thickness is of crucial importance in corneal refractive procedures. The aim of this work is to compare the central corneal thickness measurements using Scheimpflug imaging (Pentacam) and contact US pachymetry in normal myopic patients. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted on in 144 eyes of 72 normal myopic patients during 6 months. The study location was the Research Institute of Ophthalmology (Giza, Egypt), and Magrabi Eye Hospital (Dubai, United Arab Emirates). Central corneal thickness was measured with the two devices. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, independent-samples t-test, paired-samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test and Pearson-Product Moment Correlation Coefficient. Results: The mean age was 25.3±5.6 years (range 18 to 38 years). The median age for our patients is 24 years. The average measurements of CCT were 526.8±35.3 and 529.1±37.9 for the Pentacam pachymetry and US pachymetry values, respectively. Mean difference between both measurements was 2.3±2.6μm which is statistically insignificant (p=0.08). Bland Altman Plot shows border line agreement of the two methods US pachymetry and Pentacam in detection of central corneal thickness. Conclusion: The results of this study showed no significant differences in CCT readings between the measurements obtained by Pentacam and US pachymetry in normal myopic patients

Perineal hernias can occur primarily or secondary to a pelvic operation. Among primary perineal hernias, the congenital type is very rare, with less than 10 cases reported in the literature. This is a case report of a healthy female child presenting with a congenital posterior perineal hernia who underwent successful delayed operative repair using a perineal approach. Burn trauma is in need for prognostic indicators or admission scores. This aims for realistic documentation of the burn injury, expectation of the prognosis, and to facilitate a patient stratification to evaluate therapeutic strategies. A computer search through different medical websites was performed looking for articles correlating prognosis with different burn indices. These were carefully summarized and analyzed for this review. Variable studies were found related to that issue; the reliable indicators found had been classified as general or specific. All of them had certain clinical importance, but limitations are a common feature. All the listed indices are useful to serve in the only special clinical situations. We couldn't claim that they are actual prognostic indicator in burn victims. We believe that we still lack the proper prognostic indicator in burn patients. Researchers are invited for more effort to organize a more reliable prognostic indicator and scoring system for burn patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common procedures performed in children. A critical literature review was performed to evaluate the level and quality of evidence supporting the efficacy of this procedure.

Background: Anecdotal evidence and a handful of literature reports suggest that the outcome for infants born with gastroschisis in many African countries is poor when compared to Western nations. We wished to evaluate current management strategies and outcomes in African and Western units that treat infants with gastroschisis. Patients and Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of case-notes for infants with gastroschisis who presented to a hospital between 1 January 2004 and 31 December 2007. There were five participating centres, divided for analysis into an African cohort (three centres) and a Western cohort (two centres). Results: Fewer infants presented to a hospital with gastroschisis in the African cohort when compared to the Western cohort, particularly when the size of catchment area of each hospital was taken into account. The physiological state of the infant on presentation and management strategy varied widely between centres. Primary closure, preformed silo and surgical silo with delayed closure were all utilised in the African cohort. Use of the preformed silo and delayed abdominal wall closure was the strategy of choice in the Western cohort. The 30-day mortality was 23% and 1% respectively. This primary outcome measure varied considerably in the African cohort but was the same in the two Western units. Conclusions: Gastroschisis in the African cohort was characterised by fewer infants presenting to a hospital and a more variable outcome when compared to the Western cohort. A detailed epidemiological study to determine the incidence of gastroschisis in African countries may provide valuable information. In addition, interventions such as prompt resuscitation, safe neonatal transfer, the use of the preformed silo and parenteral nutrition could improve outcomes in infants with gastroschisis.

This article presents the notion about Slow Invariant Manifold (SIM) and their fundamental role in model reduction techniques (MRTs) for challenges encountered in mechanical engineering within dissipative systems of chemical kinetics. Focusing on the reaction routes of complex mechanisms, we construct and compare primary approximations of the SIM through MRTs, including the Spectral Quasi Equilibrium Manifold (SQEM) and Intrinsic Low Dimensional Manifold (ILDM). These methods effectively transform high-dimensional complex problems into lower dimensions, solving them without compromising crucial information about the complex systems modified for homogeneous reactive systems. Employing the sensitivity analysis by using the MATLAB's toolbox, we present the numerical findings in a tabular format obtained through MRTs. This study investigates the dynamic characteristics of the dual-mode resonant non-linear Schrodinger equation with a Bhom potential. Hydrodynamics, nonlinear optical fibre communication, elastic media, and plasma physics are just a few of the mathematical physics and engineering applications for this model. The study aims to achieve two main objectives: first, to discuss bifurcation analysis, and second, to extract optical soliton solutions using the extended hyperbolic function method. The study successfully derives various wave solutions, including bright, singular, periodic singular and dark solitons, based on the governing model. The findings conferred in this article show a crucial advancement in understanding the propagation of waves in non-linear media. Additionally, bifurcation of phase portraits of ordinary differential equation consistent with the partial differential equation under consideration is conducted. We also highlight specific constraint conditions that ensure the presence of these obtained solutions. Background: This study aimed to assess the anthropometric measures and pubertal growth of children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and to detect risk determinants affecting these measures and their link to glycemic control., Patients and Methods: Two hundred children and adolescents were assessed using anthropometric measurements. Those with short stature were further evaluated using insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), bone age, and thyroid profile, while those with delayed puberty were evaluated using sex hormones and pituitary gonadotropins assay., Results: We found that 12.5% of our patients were short (height SDS < -2) and IGF-1 was less than -2 SD in 72% of them. Patients with short stature had earlier age of onset of diabetes, longer duration of diabetes, higher HbA1C and urinary albumin/creatinine ratio compared to those with normal stature (p < 0.05). Additionally, patients with delayed puberty had higher HbA1c and dyslipidemia compared to those with normal puberty (p < 0.05). The regression analysis revealed that factors associated with short stature were; age at diagnosis, HbA1C > 8.2, and albumin/creatinine ratio > 8 (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Children with uncontrolled T1DM are at risk of short stature and delayed puberty. Objective : hybrid nanofluids have superior thermal efficiency and physical durability in contrast to regular nanofluids. The stagnation point flow of MHD micropolar hybrid nanofluids over a deformable sheet with viscous dissipation is investigated. Methodology : the controlling partial differential equations are converted to nonlinear ordinary differential equations using the transmuted similarity, and are subsequently solved using the bvp4c solver in MATLAB. The hybrid nanofluids consist of aluminum and copper nanoparticles, dispersed in a base fluid of water. Results : multiple solutions are obtained in the given problem for the case of shrinking as well as for the stretching sheet due to the variation in several influential parameters. Non-unique solutions, generally, exist for the case of shrinking sheets. In addition, the first branch solution is physically stable and acceptable according to the stability analysis. The friction factor is higher for the branch of the first solution and lower in the second branch due to the higher magnetic parameters, while the opposite behavior is seen in the case of the local heat transfer rate. Originality : the novelty of this model is that it finds multiple solutions in the presence of Cu and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles and also performs the stability analysis. The customization of hybrid nanofluids to achieve a particular and controlled growth rate of thermal transport is done to meet the needs of applications in heating and cooling systems, aerospace and automotive industries, etc. Due to the extensive applications, the aim of the current paper is to derive a numerical solution to a wall jet flow problem through a stretching surface. To study the flow problem, authors have considered a non-Newtonian Eyring-Powell hybrid nanofluid with water and CoFe 2 O 4 and TiO 2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, the impact of a magnetic field and irregular heat sink/source are studied. To comply with the applications of the wall jet flow, the authors have presented the numerical solution for two cases; with and without a magnetic field. The numerical solution is derived with a similarity transformation and MATLAB-based bvp4c solver. The value of skin friction for wall jet flow at the surface decreases by more than 50% when the magnetic fieldMA=0.2is present. The stream function value is higher for the wall jet flow without the magnetic field. The temperature of the flow rises with the dominant strength of the heat source parameters. The results of this investigation will be beneficial to various applications that utilize the applications of a wall jet, such as in car defrosters, spray paint drying for vehicles or houses, cooling structures for the CPU of high-processor laptops, sluice gate flows, and cooling jets over turbo-machinery components, etc., (© 2023 IOP Publishing Ltd.)

Zirconia (ZrO 2 ) nanoparticles (1-3 wt.%) were incorporated into the epoxy matrix using the ultra-sonication mixing method of dispersion to manufacture nanocomposite coatings. An automatic applicator was used to prepare the coating samples on a stainless steel substrate. The influence of ZrO 2 nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of epoxy coatings was evaluated using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermos-gravimetric analysis (TGA), elastic modulus, and micro-hardness measurement with the nano-indentation technique. The corrosion stability during immersion in 3.5% NaCl solution was monitored using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). All ZrO 2 -containing coatings showed better corrosion stability and adhesion than pure epoxy coating. Epoxy coating incorporated with 2% ZrO 2 exhibited the greatest values of corrosion resistance and adhesion due to the effect of nanoparticle properties and their better de-agglomeration in the epoxy matrix than pure epoxy coating.

The powder metallurgy method was used to manufacture three Ti-based alloys: Ti-15%Zr-2%Ta-4%Sn (Ti-Zr-Ta-4Sn), Ti-15%Zr-2%Ta-6%Sn (Ti-Zr-Ta-6Sn), and Ti-15%Zr-2%Ta-8%Sn (Ti-Zr-Ta-8Sn). Electrochemical measurements and surface analyses were used to determine the effect of Sn concentration on the corrosion of these alloys after exposure to a simulated body fluid (SBF) solution for 1 h and 72 h. It was found that the passivation of the alloy surface significantly increased when the Sn content increased from 4% to 6% and then to 8%, which led to a significant reduction in corrosion. The impedance spectra derived from the Nyquist graphs also explained how the addition of Sn significantly improved the alloys' polarization resistances. According to the change in the chronoamperometric current at an applied anodic potential over time, the increase in Sn content within the alloy significantly reduced the currents over time, indicating that the uniform and pitting corrosion were greatly decreased. The formation of an oxide layer (TiO 2 ), which was demonstrated by the surface morphology of the alloys after exposure to SBF solution for 72 h and corrosion at 400 mV (Ag/AgCl) for 60 min, was supported by the profile analysis obtained by an X-ray spectroscopy analyzer. It was clear from all of the findings that the tested alloys have a remarkable improvement in resistance to corrosivity when the Sn content was increased to 8%.

This work aims to study the influence of Al 2 O 3 in CrFeCuMnNi high-entropy alloy matrix composites (HEMCs) on their microstructure, phase changes, and mechanical and wear performances. CrFeCuMnNi-Al 2 O 3 HEMCs were synthesized via mechanical alloying (MA) followed by hot compaction (550 °C at 550 MPa), medium frequency sintering (1200 °C), and hot forging (1000 °C at 50 MPa). The XRD results demonstrate the formation of both FCC and BCC phases in the synthesized powders, which were transformed into major stable FCC and minor ordered B2-BCC phases, as confirmed by HRSEM. The microstructural variation of HRSEM-EBSD, in terms of the coloured grain map (inverse pole figures), grain size distribution, and misorientation angle, was analysed and reported. The grain size of the matrix decreased with the increase in Al 2 O 3 particles owing to the higher structural refinement by MA and zener pinning of the incorporated Al 2 O 3 particles. The hot-forged CrFeCuMnNi-3 vol.% Al 2 O 3 sample exhibited an ultimate compressive strength of 1.058 GPa, which was 21% higher than that of the unreinforced HEA matrix. Both the mechanical and wear performance of the bulk samples increased with an increase in Al 2 O 3 content due to solid solution formation, high configurational mixing entropy, structural refinement, and the effective dispersion of the incorporated Al 2 O 3 particles. The wear rate and coefficient of friction values decreased with the increase in Al 2 O 3 content, indicating an improvement in wear resistance owing to the lower domination of abrasive and adhesive mechanisms, as evidenced by the SEM worn surface morphology.

In this study, AA5083-WC composites were developed by ball milling followed by hot consolidation. The microstructures of the developed composites were investigated using XRD, SEM, EDX, and EBSD. The developed composites exhibited a homogeneous dispersion of WC particulates in the AA5083 matrix without any interactions at the matrix/reinforcement interface. The results confirmed the development of a refined equiaxed grain structure of AA5083-WC composites where the EBSD results revealed an average grain size of 4.38 µm and 3.32 µm for AA5083-6%WC (AW-6) and AA5083-12%WC (AW-12) composites, respectively. The results showed that incorporating WC particulates in the AA5083 alloy matrix significantly improved the compressive stress-strain behaviour and considerably enhanced the resistance to wear and friction. The AA5083-12%WC (AW-12) composite displayed the maximum strength and the highest resistance to wear and friction, whereas the as-milled AA5083 alloy (AW-0) exhibited the lowest strength and the least resistance to wear and friction. The AA5083-12%WC (AW-12) composite exhibited the optimum mechanical and tribological behaviour of the developed composites, making it a promising candidate for tribological applications.

In this study, corrosion-resistant AA5083-BN/WC composites were developed for tribological applications through adequate control of the reinforcement content (WC and BN) in the matrix (AA5083 alloy). The effects of 6% and 12% tungsten carbide (WC) as well as 6% and 12% boron nitride (BN) additions on the corrosion behavior of AA5083 aluminum composite in 3.5% NaCl solution were carried out. Electrochemical techniques such as cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), changes in the chronoamperometric current with time (CCT), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were utilized. The polarization results showed that the addition of 6% WC to the AA5083 alloy matrix improved its resistance to corrosion (R P ). Rp exhibited an additional increase by adding 12% WC to the matrix. The values of R P were observed to increase for the AA5083 composite when adding 6% BN, and the highest R P values were recorded for the composite that contains 12% BN. The results obtained by the CPP method were confirmed by CCT and EIS measurements, where the presence of WC and BN protected the developed AA5083- BN/WC composites against corrosion. The corrosion resistance revealed an additional improvement with an increase in WC and BN content from 6% to 12%. The results also confirm that pitting corrosion decreased in the presence of WC and BN in the fabricated composites.

Aims: Current diagnostic and treatment modalities target late stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) when retinopathy has already been established. Novel and more sensitive strategies are needed. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) permits non-invasive visualisation of retinal microcirculation. Fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) plays an important role in glucose and lipid homoeostasis. This study assesses early OCTA changes among children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) compared to fundus photography and correlates them to diabetes-duration, glycaemic control, and FGF21; hence, it determines their value in early detection of DR., Methodology: Hundred children and adolescents with T1DM were assessed for diabetes-duration, insulin therapy, hypoglycemia, and diabetic-ketoacidosis frequency, Tanner staging, glycated-haemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting lipids, urinary albumin/creatinine ratio, and serum FGF21. OCTA and fundus photography were done for the studied patients and 100 age, gender, and Tanner matched healthy controls., Results: The mean age of the children and adolescents with T1DM was 10.84 years, their mean diabetes-duration was 3.27 years and their median FGF21 was 150 pg/ml. FGF21 was significantly higher among children and adolescents with T1DM than controls (p < 0.001). Children and adolescents with T1DM had a significantly larger foveal avascular zone (FAZ) and lower peripapillary and inside-disc capillary densities (p < 0.05); with no significant fundus photography difference (p = 0.155) than controls. FAZ was positively correlated and peripapillary and inside-disc capillary densities were negatively correlated with diabetes-duration, HbA1c, FGF21, and Tanner stage. FGF21 was significantly higher in T1DM children and adolescents having OCTA changes compared to those with normal OCTA (p = 0.002). Multivariate-regression revealed that FAZ is independently associated with diabetes-duration, HbA1c and FGF21., Conclusions: OCTA changes start early in children and adolescents with T1DM long before the fundus changes. Ti-15%Zr alloy and Ti-15%Zr-2%Ta alloy were fabricated to be used in biomedical applications. The corrosion of these two alloys after being immersed in simulated body fluid for 1 h and 72 h was investigated. Different electrochemical methods, including polarization, impedance, and chronoamperometric current with time at 400 mV were employed. Also, the surface morphology and the compositions of its formed film were reported by the use of scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray. Based on the collected results, the presence of 2%Ta in the Ti-Zr alloy passivated its corrosion by minimizing its corrosion rate. The polarization curves revealed that adding Ta within the alloy increases the corrosion resistance as was confirmed by the impedance spectroscopy and current time data. The change of current versus time proved that the addition of Ta reduces the absolute current even at high anodic potential, 400 mV. The results of both electrochemical and spectroscopic methods indicated that pitting corrosion does not occur for both Ti-Zr and Ti-Zr-Ta alloys, even after their immersion in SBF solutions for 72 h.

Very often, pure Ti and (α + β) Ti-6Al-4V alloys have been used commercially for implant applications, but ensuring their chemical, mechanical, and biological biocompatibility is always a serious concern for sustaining the long-term efficacy of implants. Therefore, there has always been a great quest to explore new biomedical alloying systems that can offer substantial beneficial effects in tailoring a balance between the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of implantable medical devices. With a view to the mechanical performance, this study focused on designing a Ti-15Zr-2Ta- x Sn (where x = 4, 6, 8) alloying system with high strength and low Young's modulus prepared by a powder metallurgy method. The experimental results showed that mechanical alloying, followed by spark plasma sintering, produced a fully consolidated (α + β) Ti-Zr-Ta-Sn-based alloy with a fine grain size and a relative density greater than 99%. Nevertheless, the shape, size, and distribution of α-phase precipitations were found to be sensitive to Sn contents. The addition of Sn also increased the α/β transus temperature of the alloy. For example, as the Sn content was increased from 4 wt.% to 8 wt.%, the β grains transformed into diverse morphological characteristics, namely, a thin-grain-boundary α phase (α GB ), lamellar α colonies, and acicular α s precipitates and very low residual porosity during subsequent cooling after the spark plasma sintering procedure, which is consistent with the relative density results. Among the prepared alloys, Ti-15Zr-2Ta-8Sn exhibited the highest hardness (s340 HV), compressive yield strength (~1056 MPa), and maximum compressive strength (~1470). The formation of intriguing precipitate-matrix interfaces (α/β) acting as dislocation barriers is proposed to be the main reason for the high strength of the Ti-15Zr-2Ta-8Sn alloy. Finally, based on mechanical and structural properties, it is envisaged that our developed alloys will be promising for indwelling implant applications.

The blood flow through stenotic artery is one of the important research area in computational fluid mechanics due to its application in biomedicine. Aim of this research work is to investigate the impact of nanoparticles on the characteristics of human blood flow in a stenosed blood artery. In under consideration problem Newtonian fluid is assumed as human blood. Newtonian fluid flows through large blood vessels (more than 300 μm). The constitutive equations together with the boundary conditions are diminished to non-dimensional form by using boundary layer approximation and similarity transfiguration to attain the solution of velocity and temperature distribution of blood flow through arterial stenosis numerically with the help of Matlab bvp4c. The results for physical quantities at cylindrical surface are calculated and their effects are also presented through tables. The heat transfer rate increases throughout the stenosed artery with the concentration of copper nanoparticle. Velocity curve decreases by increasing the values of flow parameter and nanoparticle volume fraction. Herein, we report the electropolymerization of crystal violet (CRV) on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for the detection of adrenaline (AD). Electropolymerization parameters such as electrolyte pH, scan rate and monomer concentrations were optimized using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The characterization of CRV and poly(crystal violet) (PCV) was done using FT-IR, UV-visible spectroscopy and EIS. More importantly, the charge transfer resistance (R ct ) and other EIS data recorded from the EIS of various forms of the poly(crystal violet) (PCV) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) in AD were used for identifying the best PCV modified electrode. Subsequent application of the electrode prepared at optimum conditions (PGCE) for AD detection using the square wave voltammetry (SWV) gave a limit of detection (LOD) of 2.86 μM over a linear range of 10.3-102.7 μM. This sensor also showed considerable stability, good AD recovery from the real sample (98.9%), and excellent reproducibility, making it a suitable analytical tool for AD detection at the micromolar level., Competing Interests: The authors declare no conflict of interest., (© 2022 The Author(s).)

Pyrimidine compounds have proven to be effective and efficient additives capable of protecting mild steel in acidic media. This class of organic compounds often functions as adsorption-type inhibitors of corrosion by forming a protective layer on the metallic substrate. The present study reports a computational study of forty pyrimidine compounds that have been investigated as sustainable inhibitors of mild steel corrosion in molar HCl solution. Quantitative structure property relationship was conducted using linear (multiple linear regression) and nonlinear (artificial neural network) models. Standardization method was employed in variable selection yielding five top chemical descriptors utilized for model development along with the inhibitor concentration. Multiple linear regression model yielded a fair predictive model. Artificial neural network model developed using k-fold cross-validation method provided a comprehensive insight into the corrosion protection mechanism of studied pyrimidine-based corrosion inhibitors. Using a multilayer perceptron with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm, the study obtained the optimal model having a MSE of 8.479, RMSE of 2.912, MAD of 1.791, and MAPE of 2.648. The optimal neural network model was further utilized to forecast the protection capacities of nine non-synthesized pyrimidine derivatives. 3,3'-Methylenedisalicylic acid (MDS) was synthesized and ascertained on the basis of elemental analyses (C, H) and spectral measurements (IR, mass, 1 H NMR, and UV-vis). Moreover, the prepared MDS compound has been assayed for its antimicrobial action against the growth of fungi as well as Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The results demonstrated the possibility of its usefulness to restrain the growth of both fungi and bacteria, whereas MDS showed its best impact against Candida albicans . The inhibitive impact of MDS on the corrosion of aluminum (Al) in concentrated sodium chloride solution (3.5 wt % NaCl) has been investigated. The corrosion work was done by potentiodynamic cyclic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and chronoamperometric current-time measurements and complemented by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray investigations. It was found that MDS molecules protect the aluminum against corrosion, and its ability increases with the increase of concentration from 5 × 10 -5 to 1 × 10 -4 M and further to 5 × 10 -4 M. The optimization of two different types of hardeners, namely polyaminoamine adduct (Aradur 450 BD) and polyamidoamine adduct (Aradur 3282 BD), with diglycidyle ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy resin was carried out. Three different stoichiometries of PA 450 to the epoxy resin to fabricate E-0, E-1, and E-2 coating samples and the other three of PA 3282 to the epoxy resin to fabricate F-0, F-1, and F-2 coating samples were coated on mild steel panels. All coated samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), and nanoindentation techniques. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of the fabricated coatings was investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) after various exposures in the climatic conditions in 3.5% NaCl solutions. It was found that the coatings possess almost identical thermal and mechanical properties. Moreover, the E-1 coating shows better corrosion resistance compared to E-0 and E-2 coatings. On the other hand, the F-1 coating was the most effective in significantly improving corrosion resistance. Overall, the addition of PA 450 and PA 3282 to some stoichiometries improves the corrosion resistance of the fabricated coatings.

Colloidal suspensions of regular fluids and nanoparticles are known as nanofluids. They have a variety of applications in the medical field, including cell separation, drug targeting, destruction of tumor tissue, and so on. On the other hand, the dispersion of multiple nanoparticles into a regular fluid is referred to as a hybrid nanofluid. It has a variety of innovative applications such as microfluidics, heat dissipation, dynamic sealing, damping, and so on. Because of these numerous applications of nanofluids in minds, therefore, the objective of the current exploration divulged the axisymmetric radiative flow and heat transfer induced by hybrid nanofluid impinging on a porous stretchable/shrinkable rotating disc. In addition, the impact of Smoluchowski temperature and Maxwell velocity slip boundary conditions are also invoked. The hybrid nanofluid was formed by mixing the copper (Cu) and alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) nanoparticles scattered in the regular (viscous) base fluid (H 2 O). Similarity variables are used to procure the similarity equations, and the numerical outcomes are achieved using bvp4c in MATLAB software. According to the findings, double solutions are feasible for stretching (λ>0) and shrinking cases (λ<0). The heat transfer rate is accelerated as the hybrid nanoparticles increases. The suction parameter enhances the friction factors as well as heat transfer rate. Moreover, the friction factor in the radial direction and heat transfer enrich for the first solution and moderate for the second outcome due to the augmentation δ1, while the trend of the friction factor in the radial direction is changed only in the case of stretching for both branches.

In this present article the entropy generation, induced magnetic field, and mixed convection stagnant point flow of pseudoplastic nano liquid over an elastic surface is investigated. The Buongiorno model is employed in modeling. Through the use of the boundary layer idea, flow equations are transformed from compact to component form. The system of equations is solved numerically. The Induced magnetic spectrum falls near the boundary and grows further away as the reciprocal of the magnetic Prandtl number improves. The fluctuation of induced magnetic rises while expanding the values of mixed convection, thermophoresis, and magnetic parameters, whereas it declines for increment in the Brownian and stretching parameters. The velocity amplitude ascends and temperature descends for the rise in magnetic parameter. The mass transfer patterns degrade for the higher amount of buoyancy ratio while it boosts by the magnification of mixed convection and stretching parameters. Streamlines behavior is also taken into account against the different amounts of mixed convection and magnetic parameters. The pseudoplastic nanofluids are applicable in all electronic devices for increasing the heating or cooling rate in them. In this article, the primary focus is to investigate the heat transfer effects with viscous compressible laminar flow in the permeable elliptic cylinder. The Reynolds number is kept 100 for flow to be laminar. The physics of heat transfer is selected to be coupled with the laminar flow. The results for particular step-size time for Velocity distribution, pressure profile, temperature profile, isothermal temperature contours, and drag coefficient have been analyzed. Mesh has been generated through COMSOL, mesh entities have been elaborated statistically. The maximum and minimum velocity profile is observed at the elliptical cylinder's walls and upper, lower boundary respectively. The maximum velocity observed is 2.22 m/s. Pressure profile around elliptic corners is found maximum, distinct patterns are observed even under the influence of applied heat. Temperature is observed maximum at walls but it gradually increases as moving from the upper boundary towards the lower boundary. The isothermal contour patterns are observed maximum near the walls, drag coefficient of gradual decrease is observed. COMSOL multi-physics is utilized for mathematical modeling of problems and the Backward-Differentiation-Formula has been exploited to handle problems numerically. Stretched flows have numerous applications in different industrial, biomedical and engineering processes. Current research is conducted to examine the flow phenomenon of Prandtl fluid model over a moveable surface. The phenomenon of mass and thermal transportation is based on generalized theory of Cattaneo-Christov which considers the involvement of relaxation times. In addition to these, variable characteristics of thermal conductivity and diffusion coefficient are considered as a function of temperature. The physical problem in Cartesian coordinate system is modeled via boundary layer theory which yields a coupled system of partial differential equations. Group scaling transportation is applied to model these PDEs system. The converted equations have been approximated via optimal homotopic scheme. The efficiency and validity of used approach has been shown by computing the error analysis and establishing a comparative study. It is noted that the enhancement in magnetic parameter plays a controlling role for velocity field and it augment the concentration and temperature fields. Matrix nanocomposites are high performance materials possessing unusual features along with unique design possibilities. Due to extraordinary thermophysical characteristic contained by these matrix nanocomposites materials they are useful in several areas ranging from packaging to biomedical applications. Being an environment friendly, utilization of nanocomposites offer new technological opportunities for several sectors of aerospace, automotive, electronics and biotechnology. In this regards, current pagination is devoted to analyze thermal features of viscous fluid flow between orthogonally rotating disks with inclusion of metallic matrix nanocomposite (MMNC) and ceramic matrix nanocomposites (CMNC) materials. Morphological aspects of these nanomaterials on flow and heat transfer characteristics has been investigated on hybrid viscous fluid flow. Mathematical structuring of problem along with empirical relations for nanocomposites materials are formulated in the form of partial differential equations and later on converted into ordinary differential expressions by using suitable variables. Solution of constructed coupled differential system is found by collaboration of Runge-Kutta and shooting methods. Variation in skin friction coefficient at lower and upper walls of disks along with measurement about heat transfer rate are calculated against governing physical parameters. Impact of flow concerning variables on axial, radial components of velocity and temperature distribution are also evaluated. Contour plots are also drawn to explore heat and thermal profiles. Comparison and critical analysis of MMNc and CMNc have been presented at lower and upper porous disks. Our computed analysis indicates that hybrid nanofluids show significant influence as compared to simple nanofluids with the permutation of the different shape factors.

Corrosion of iron in sodium chloride (3.5% wt) solutions and its inhibition by ethanedihydrazide (EH) have been reported. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP), and change of current with time at -475 mV (Ag/AgCl) measurements were employed in this study. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) techniques were utilized to report surface morphology and elemental analysis, respectively. The presence of 5 × 10 -5 M EH was found to inhibit the corrosion of iron, and the effect of inhibition profoundly increased with an increase in EH concentration up to 1 × 10 -4 M and further to 5 × 10 -4 M. The low values of corrosion current and high corrosion resistance, which were obtained from the EIS, CPP, and change of current with time experiments, affirmed the adequacy of EH as a corrosion inhibitor for iron. Objectives: COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the diagnosis of type 1 diabetes and its acute complications. Thus, the study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes hospitalized during the first wave of the pandemic and the prevalence of new onset diabetes among patients with evidence of COVID-19 infection., Methods: A single-center surveillance study included all patients with diabetes admitted to Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University, in Egypt between May to August 2020. Data were collected to evaluate patients' clinical and laboratory characteristics as well as their outcomes., Results: Thirty-six patients were admitted during the study period. The mean age was 8.4 ± 3.8 years. Patients presented late to the emergency department with a mean delay of 3.05 ± 1.19 days from onset of symptoms. 34/36 patients presented in diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), 50% presenting in severe DKA. Almost 81% of the patients were newly diagnosed. During the study period, SARS-CoV-2 PCR was found positive in four patients, COVID Ig M antibodies were positive in another two patients; all were symptomatic requiring ICU admission. Four patients showed a picture suggestive of the multi-inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C); cardiac affection was a constant feature., Conclusions: The pandemic affected both the prevalence and severity of DKA among pediatric patients. The increased prevalence of severe DKA could be partly related to delayed hospital admission or the effect of COVID-19 in triggering DKA. Denture base materials need appropriate mechanical and tribological characteristics to endure different stresses inside the mouth. This study investigates the properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) reinforced with different low loading fractions (0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 wt.%) of hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles. HA nanoparticles with different loading fractions are homogenously dispersed in the PMMA matrix through mechanical mixing. The resulting density, Compressive Young's modulus, compressive yield strength, ductility, fracture toughness, and hardness were evaluated experimentally; the friction coefficient and wear were estimated by rubbing the PMMA/HA nanocomposites against stainless steel and PMMA counterparts. A finite element model was built to determine the wear layer thickness and the stress distribution along the nanocomposite surfaces during the friction process. In addition, the wear mechanisms were elucidated via scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that increasing the concentration of HA nanoparticles increases the stiffness, compressive yield strength, toughness, ductility, and hardness of the PMMA nanocomposite. Moreover, tribological tests show that increasing the nanoparticle weight fraction considerably decreases the friction coefficient and wear loss.

Less toxic, environmentally safe green-mediated iron (III) oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 -NP) synthesized using Callistemon viminalis ( C. viminalis ) leaf (Fe 3 O 4 -NPL) and flower (Fe 3 O 4 -NPF) extracts is reported in this work for the first time. Total flavonoids and phenols present in the plant extracts were determined. Characterization of the nanoparticles was carried out using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-VIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Malvern zeta sizer. Other properties of the nanoparticles were investigated using the thermogravimetric analyser and cyclic voltammetry. The average particle sizes obtained for Fe 3 O 4 -NPL and Fe 3 O 4 -NPF were 17.91 nm and 27.93 nm, respectively. Fe 3 O 4 -NPL exhibited an excellent electrochemical activity when compared with Fe 3 O 4 -NPF based on a stability study using cyclic voltammetry and regression value. Additionally, Fe 3 O 4 -NPF displayed excellent antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus , Salmonella enteritidis , and Vibrio cholerae with zones of inhibition of 13, 15, and 25 mm, respectively. Simple, cheap, and less toxic green-mediated iron (III) oxide nanoparticles synthesized from C. viminalis leaf (Fe 3 O 4 -NPL) and flower (Fe 3 O 4 -NPF) extracts hold the potential of being used to control the activity of pathogenic bacteria of health importance and as an electrochemical sensor for both biological and environmental analytes.

Imbalance in the levels of monoamine neurotransmitters have manifested in severe health issues. Electrochemical sensors have been designed for their determination, with good sensitivity recorded. Carbon-based quantum dots have proven to be an important component of electrochemical sensors due to their high conductivity, low cytotoxicity and opto-electronic properties. The quest for more sensitive electrodes with cheaper materials led to the development of electrochemical sensors based on carbon-based quantum dots for the detection of neurotransmitters. The importance of monoamine neurotransmitters (NTs) and the good electrocatalytic activity of carbon and graphene quantum dots (CQDs and GQDs) make the review of the efforts made in the design of such sensors for monoamine NTs of huge necessity. The differences and the similarities between these two quantum dots are highlighted prior to a discussion of their application in electrochemical sensors over the last ten years. Compared to other monoamine NTs, dopamine (DA) was the most studied with GQDs and CQD-based electrochemical sensors.

Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles were prepared using a simple green synthesis approach in an alkaline medium, from three different extracts of citrus peels waste. The synthesized nano-crystalline materials were characterized by using ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). UV-vis analysis of the nanoparticles showed broad peaks around 360 nm for the ZnO NPs (Zinc oxide nanoparticles) from three citrus peels' extracts. ZnO NPs exhibited Zn-O band close to 553 cm -1 , which further verified the formation of the ZnO NPs. A bandgap of 3.26 eV, 3.20 eV and 3.30 eV was calculated for the ZnO NPs from grape (ZnO NPs/GPE), lemon (ZnO NPs/LPE), and orange (ZnO NPs/OPE) peels extract, respectively. The average grain sizes of the ZnO nanoparticles were evaluated to be 30.28 nm, 21.98 nm, and 18.49 nm for grape (ZnO NPs/GPE), lemon (ZnO NPs/LPE), and orange (ZnO NPs/OPE) peel extract, respectively. The surface morphology and sizes of the nanoparticle were confirmed by ESEM and TEM analysis, respectively. Furthermore, the zeta potential of the as-prepared ZnO NPs from OPE, LPE, and GPE was -34.2 mV, -38.8 mV, and -42.9 mV, respectively, indicating the high stability of the nanoparticles. Cyclic voltammetric properties of the synthesized nanoparticles were investigated across extracts, and the results showed that the citrus peels extracts (CPE) mediated ZnO NPs modified screen plate carbon (SPC/ ZnO NPs/CPE) electrodes exhibited enhanced catalytic properties when compared with the bare SPCE. The electroactive areas computed from the enhancement of the bare SPCE was approximately three times for SPCE/ ZnO NPs/LPE, and SPCE/ZnO NPs/GPE, and two times for SPCE/ZnO NPs/OPE, higher than that of the bare SPCE. Comparison across the extracts suggested that the catalytic properties of the nanoparticles were unique in ZnO NPs from GPE.

Two new 7-N,N'-dialkylaminomethyl-8-Hydroxyquinolines, namely 7-N,N'-dipropylaminomethyl-8-Hydroxyquinoline (DPQ) and 7-N,N'-dimethylaminomethyl-8-Hydroxyquinoline (DMQ), were synthesized and characterized using 1 H/ 13 C NMR and Elemental analysis methods. Corrosion inhibition effect of DMP and DPQ for C40E steel in 1 M HCl was evaluated at different concentrations (10 -3 to 10 -6 M) and temperatures (298 to 328 K) using several experimental and computational approaches. Weight loss and electrochemical studies showed that protection efficiencies (η max ) of DPQ and DMQ increase with increase in concentrations. The DPQ and DMQ showed maximum efficiencies of 96.1% and 94.4%, respectivelyat 10 -3 M. Polarization measurements showed that DMQ and DPQ act as mixed type corrosion inhibitors. Adsorption of DPQ and DMQ on C40E steel in 1 M HCl obeyed the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Variation in surface morphology of corroded metallic surface with and without DMQ and DPQ was demonstrated using scanning electron microscopy. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations studies showed that DPQ and DMQ acquire the flat or horizontal orientation over the C40E steel. DFT analyses revealed that both DPQ and DMQ interact with the C40E steelusing electron-sharing(donor-acceptor)mechanism. This paper presents the studies of the development of a high-performance epoxy coating for steel substrates. To this end, it investigated the synergistic effect of incorporating zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles into nanosilica containing epoxy formulations. The mechanical properties of the epoxy coating formulations were improved by modifying the surfaces of the silica nanoparticles (5 wt.%) with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane, which ensured their dispersal through the material. Next, the ZnO nanoparticles (1, 2, or 3 wt.%) were incorporated to improve the corrosion performance of the formulations. The anticorrosive properties of the coatings were examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of coated mild steel specimens immersed in 3.5% NaCl solution over different time intervals (1 h to 30 days). Incorporation of the ZnO nanoparticles and the nanosilica into the coating formulation improved the corrosion resistance of the epoxy coating even after long-term exposure to saline test solutions. Finally, to evaluate how the nanoparticles affected the chemical and morphological properties of the prepared coatings, the coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) is neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (NACRT), followed by surgical resection. However, >70% of patients do not achieve a complete pathological response and have higher rates of relapse and death. There are no validated pre- or on-treatment factors that predict response to NACRT besides tumour stage and size. We characterised the response of 33 LARC patients to NACRT, collected tumour samples from patients prior to, during and after NACRT, and performed whole exome, transcriptome and high-depth targeted sequencing. The pre-treatment LARC genome was not predictive of response to NACRT. However, in line with the increasing recognition of microbial influence in cancer, RNA analysis of pre-treatment tumours suggested a greater abundance of Fusobacteria in intermediate and poor responders. In addition, we investigated tumour heterogeneity and evolution in response to NACRT. While matched pre-treatment, on-treatment and post-treatment tumours revealed minimal genome evolution overall, we identified cases in which microsatellite instability developed or was selected for during NACRT. Recent research has suggested a role for adaptive mutability to targeted therapy in colorectal cancer cells. We provide preliminary evidence of selection for mismatch repair deficiency in response to NACRT. Furthermore, pre-NACRT genomic landscapes do not predict treatment response but pre-NACRT microbiome characteristics may be informative.

Electrochemical, surface morphology, density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulation methods were employed in investigating the effects of (2 E ,2' E )-2,2'-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-9-phenyl-3,4,6,7-tetrahydroacridine-1,8(2 H ,5 H ,9 H ,10 H )-diylidene)bis( N -phenylhydrazinecarbothioamide) (IAB-NP), (2 E ,2' E )-2,2'-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-9-phenyl-3,4,6,7-tetrahydroacridine-1,8(2 H ,5 H ,9 H ,10 H )-diylidene)bis( N -(2,4-difluorophenyl)hydrazinecarbothioamide)IAB-ND) and (2 E ,2' E )-2,2'-(3,3,6,6-tetramethyl-9-phenyl-3,4,6,7-tetrahydroacridine-1,8(2 H ,5 H ,9 H ,10 H )-diylidene)bis( N -(2-fluorophenyl) hydrazinecarbothioamide) (IAB-NF) on mild steel corrosion in 1 M HCl solution. From the studies, compounds IAB-NP, IAB-ND and IAB-NF inhibit mild steel corrosion in the acid and the protection efficiencies were found to increase with the increase in concentration of each compound. At the optimum inhibitor concentration of 1.5 × 10 -4 M, the inhibition efficiencies (%) of the compounds are in the order IAB-NF (90.48) > IAB-ND (87.48) > IAB-NP (85.28). Potentiodynamic polarization measurements revealed that all the compounds acted as mixed-type corrosion inhibitors. Experimental data for the adsorption of the studied molecules on a mild steel surface in 1 M HCl fitted into the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and the standard free energies of adsorption (Δ G o ads ) suggested both physisorption and chemisorption mechanisms. Scanning electron microscopy analyses confirmed the formation of a protective film on the mild steel surface by the inhibitor molecules, resulting in protection of the metal from corrosive electrolyte ions. Objective: The study aimed to assess enteropathogens carriage rate and risk factors among apparently healthy food handlers at Wolkite University cafeteria, Southern Ethiopia., Results: Cross-sectional study was conducted among 170 food handlers to collect socio-demographic and related data by using structured questionnaires. Stool samples were collected and subjected to microscopic examination and cultured to determine intestinal parasites. Among the total study participants, 66% of them were found to be carriers of enteropathogens: bacteria (Salmonella typhi, Shigella species), and intestinal parasites (Ascaris lumbricoides,Taenia species, Giardia lamblia, Entameoba histolytica/dispar, Enterobius vermicularis, Hook worm and Trichuris trichiura). All Salmonella and Shigella isolates were sensitive to ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, and gentamicin. A significant association was found between hand washing practice before food preparation and isolated pathogens [p = 0.013]. A significant proportion of food handlers were found to be carriers of pathogens which require a periodic screening and antibiotic therapy monitoring.

Background: Endothelial dysfunction caused by chronic inflammation is the cornerstone of vascular complications in type 1 Diabetes-Mellitus (T1DM). Soluble Urokinase Plasminogen Activator Receptor (SuPAR) is a novel marker of inflammation and endothelial dysfunction., Aim: To evaluate SuPAR in T1DM children and correlate it to diabetic vascular complications., Methods: Seventy T1DM children and 40 matched healthy controls were studied focusing on disease duration, insulin therapy and symptoms of diabetic complications. Blood-pressure, fundus and screening for peripheral-neuropathy were done. Fasting lipid profile, fraction-C of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c%), Urinary albumin excretion (UAE), estimated-glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and SuPAR were measured. Internal aortic diameter was measured with calculation of aortic distensibility and stiffness index., Results: Sixteen T1DM patients(22.9%) had peripheral neuropathy, 12(17%) had nephropathy and none had retinopathy. SuPAR was significantly elevated in diabetic nephropathy (p < 0.01) and neuropathy (p < 0.01). Aortic stiffness index was significantly higher (p < 0.01) whereas, aortic strain and distensibility were significantly lower (p < 0.01) in T1DM than controls. SuPAR was significantly correlated to disease duration (p < 0.01), systolic blood pressure (p < 0.01), total cholesterol (p < 0.01), triglycerides (p < 0.01), UAER (p < 0.01) and aortic strain (0.013)., Conclusion: Increased SuPAR early in diabetes might become a useful indicator of developing vascular complications. Further prospective studies are needed to determine the cut-off level of SuPAR for detection of T1DM and its complications., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.)

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the corrosion resistance of galvanically coupled SLA and anodized implant surfaces with a Co-Cr alloy., Materials and Methods: Three groups were included in this study. The first (SLA) was composed of SLA implants (Institut Straumann, Basel, Switzerland), the second (ANO) of NobelReplace® (Nobel Biocare, Göteborg, Sweden), and the third (MIX) of both implant systems combined. All groups were assembled with a single Co-Cr superstructure. Electrochemical testing included open-circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, cyclic potentiodynamic polarization, and chronoamperometric current-time measurements. The quantitative results (EOCP, ECORR, ICORR, EPROT, RP, and ICA) were statistically analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc multiple comparison test (α = 0.05)., Results: All the aforementioned parameters showed statistically significant differences apart from ECORR and EPROT. The evaluation of qualitative and quantitative results showed that although SLA had higher corrosion resistance compared with ANO, it had less resistance to pitting corrosion. This means that SLA showed increased resistance to uniform corrosion but less resistance if pitting corrosion was initiated. In all cases, MIX showed intermediate behavior., Conclusion: The corrosion resistance of implant-retained superstructures is dependent on the electrochemical properties of the implants involved, and thus different degrees of intraoral corrosion resistance among different implant systems are anticipated., Competing Interests: No conflict of interest., (©2019 The Authors. In this study, rods of magnesium alloy and titanium alloy were cut to have similar height of about 5mm and size of 10 mm × 10 mm to fabricate three Mg-Ti couples. The Mg-Ti couple was heat treated at 540 °C, 570 °C, and 600 °C. The corrosion of these couples have been investigated and compared with AZ31 alloy. Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were employed to study the corrosion behavior after 1.0 h and 48 h exposure to 3.5% NaCl solutions. The morphology of surfaces was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the profile analysis was collected using an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyzer after 5 days immersion in the chloride solutions. It is found that coupling Mg with Ti reduces the corrosion of AZ31 alloy, which further decreased with the increase of the temperature of treatment. Prolonging the time of exposure from 1.0 h to 48 h remarkably decreased the corrosion of the couples as well.

This work describes the chemical synthesis of antimony oxide nanoparticles (AONPs), polyaniline (PANI), acid functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (fSWCNTs), and the nanocomposite (AONP-PANI-SWCNT) as catalyst for the trace detection of lindane. Successful synthesis of the nanomaterials was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used for investigating the electrochemical behavior of the modified electrodes in the ferrocyanide/ferricyanide ([Fe(CN) 6 ] 4- /[Fe(CN) 6 ] 3- ) redox probe. GCE-AONP-PANI-SWCNT exhibited faster electron transport properties as well as higher electroactivity as compared to bare-GCE, GCE-AONPs, GCE-PANI, and GCE-SWCNT electrodes. Electrocatalytic studies further showed that GCE-AONP-PANI-SWCNT modified electrode was stable (after 20 scans) with only a small current drop in lindane (0.57%). The GCE-AONP-PANI-SWCNT electrode with low detection limit of 2.01 nM performed better toward the detection of lindane as compared to other studies in literature. The GCE-AONP-PANI-SWCNT electrode is highly selective toward the detection of lindane in the presence of various organic and inorganic interfering species. Real sample analysis of river water and tap water samples using the developed sensor gave satisfactory percentage recoveries therefore confirming the potential of the proposed sensor for practical application.

The aim of this study is to find out the microstructure, hardness, and corrosion resistance of Pb-5%Sb spine alloy. The alloy has been produced by high pressure die casting (HPDC), medium pressure die casting (AS) and low pressure die casting (GS) methods, respectively. The microstructure was characterized by using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hardness was also reported. The corrosion resistance of the spines in 0.5M H2SO4 solution has been analyzed by measuring the weight loss, impedance spectroscopy and the potentiodynamic polarization techniques. It has been found that the spine produced by HPDC has defect-free fine grain structure resulting improvement in hardness and excellent corrosion resistance.

TiC nanofibers reinforced Al matrix composites were produced by High Frequency Induction Heat Sintering (HFIHS).The titanium carbide nanofibers with an average diameter of 90 nm are first prepared by electrospinning technique and high temperature calcination process. A composite solution containing polyacrylonitrile and titanium isopropoxide is first electrospun into the nanofibers, which are subsequently stabilized and then calcined to produce the desired TiC nanofibers. The X-ray diffraction pattern and transmission electron microscopy results show that the main phase of the as-synthesized nanofibers is titanium carbide. The TiC nanofibers is then mixed with the aluminum powders and introduced into high frequency induction heat sintering (HFIHS) to produce composites of TiC nanofibers reinforced aluminum matrix. The potential application of the TiC nanofibers reinforced aluminum matrix composites was systematically investigated. 99.5% relative density and around 85 HV (833 MPa) Vickers hardness of the Al reinforced with 5 wt % TiC nanofiber has been obtained. Furthermore, the sample of Al contains 5 wt % TiC, has the highest value of compression and yield strength of about 415 and 350 MPa, respectively. The ductility of the Al/5 wt % TiC showed increasing with increasing the TiC contents.

Objectives: Estimating the prevalence of glutathione S-transferase gene polymorphism (GSTM1) null genotype among patients with beta thalassemia major (β-TM) in relation to myocardial status assessed by tissue Doppler and cardiac siderosis assessed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) T2*., Methods: Hundred patients with β-TM and 100 healthy controls were enrolled. Complete blood count (CBC), mean serum ferritin and GSTM1 genotyping, echocardiography, tissue Doppler, and cardiac MRI T2* were done., Results: Serum ferritin ranged from 1200 to 8000 ng/ml, and mean T2* value was 27.10 ± 11.20 ms. Of patients, 68 (68%) had no cardiac siderosis, while 24 (24%) with mild to moderate, and 8 (8%) with sever cardiac siderosis. T2* values were not correlated with serum ferritin (r = -0.09, P = 0.50). GSTM1 null genotype was prevalent in 46% of patients and 40% of controls (P = 0.69). Patients with null genotype had significantly shorter T2* (P = 0.001), higher left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (P = 0.002), and shorter ejection time (P = 0.005) with no significant relation to serum ferritin (P = 0.122). GSTM1 null genotype was the only predictor for cardiac iron overload (P = 0.002)., Discussion: Serum ferritin concentrations have been shown to correlate poorly with all stages of cardiac dysfunction. Low cardiac MRI T2* values occur in patients with β-TM despite good chelation therapy, suggesting a possible role of genetic factors in cardiac siderosis., Conclusion: GSTM1 null genotype is significantly associated with cardiac iron overload independent of serum ferritin in Egyptian patients with β-TM.

In this paper we report on the corrosion inhibition of cast iron in Arabian Gulf seawater by two different ionic liquids namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([EMIm]Cl) and 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium chloride ([Py 1,4 ]Cl). The inhibiting influence of the employed ionic liquids was investigated by weight loss, open circuit potential electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization. The results show the corrosion inhibition impact of the employed ionic liquids (ILs). Compared with [Py 1,4 ]Cl, [EMIm]Cl shows a higher inhibition efficiency at a short immersion time, for the examined ILs concentrations. However, [Py 1,4 ]Cl exhibits a higher efficiency upon increasing the immersion time indicating the persistence of the inhibiting influence. The corrosion inhibition of the employed ionic liquids is attributed to the adsorption of the cations of the ionic liquids onto the surface of cast iron forming a corrosion barrier.
