Abstract

This roadmap presents the transformational research ideas proposed by "BATTERY 2030+," the European large-scale research initiative for future battery chemistries. A "chemistry-neutral" roadmap to advance battery research, particularly at low technology readiness levels, is outlined, with a time horizon of more than ten years. The roadmap is centered around six themes: 1) accelerated materials discovery platform, 2) battery interface genome, with the integration of smart functionalities such as 3) sensing and 4) self-healing processes. Beyond chemistry related aspects also include crosscutting research regarding 5) manufacturability and 6) recyclability. This roadmap should be seen as an enabling complement to the global battery roadmaps which focus on expected ultrahigh battery performance, especially for the future of transport. Batteries are used in many applications and are considered to be one technology necessary to reach the climate goals. Currently the market is dominated by lithium-ion batteries, which perform well, but despite new generations coming in the near future, they will soon approach their performance limits. Without major breakthroughs, battery performance and production requirements will not be sufficient to enable the building of a climate-neutral society. Through this "chemistry neutral" approach a generic toolbox transforming the way batteries are developed, designed and manufactured, will be created.

Abstract

Denne rapporten er levert av SINTEF på oppdrag fra NHO. Den er en del av et større utredningsarbeid – «Veikart for fremtidens næringsliv». I dette arbeidet deltar SINTEF med beskrivelser og analyser knyttet til sentrale norske næringer og verdikjeder som energi og industri, biobaserte næringer, smarte samfunn og mobilitet. Dette vil bli presentert i egne og mer omfattende rapporter, som vil beskrive verdikjeder og konkurransemuligheter med utgangspunkt i sterke norske næringer og kompetansemiljøer. Disse rapportene vil blant annet gå inn på områder som elektrifisering, digitalisering og smarte byer, prosessindustri, havbruk og offshore vind. Dette er områder som etter SINTEFs vurdering vil ha stor betydning for fremtidig verdiskaping og sysselsetting i Norge. I tillegg til dette har NHO også bedt SINTEF om å komme med innspill knyttet til teknologier, ressurser og kunnskap som kan utvikle helt nye næringer og verdikjeder i Norge. Det er det siste denne rapporten handler om. Her trekker vi frem en del eksempler på teknologier og mulige nye verdikjeder som våre forskningsmiljøer arbeider med og har sterk tro på som områder for fremtidig norsk verdiskaping. I hvilken grad vi vil lykkes i å skape verdier og arbeidsplasser i fremtidens Norge vil være avhengig av mange faktorer, der næringslivets egen risikovilje er en viktig forutsetning, sammen med utviklingen i norske og internasjonale rammebetingelser. 17. Enantioselective Detection of D- and L-Phenylalanine Using Optically Active Polyaniline

Abstract

Chiral conducting polyaniline, which was prepared electrochemically from (+) and (−) camphorsulfonic acid, was utilized for the enantiomeric detection of phenylalanine in neutral phosphate buffer solution. Following electropolymerization the polymer films were dedoped in aqueous ammonia and subsequently shown to maintain their chiral character. The electrochemical window for this polymer was determined to be between 0.2 V and 0.8 V (vs. SCE) and enantiomeric discrimination between L- and D-phenylalanine was seen with the application of differential pulse voltammetry. The (+) chiral polymer is shown to behave as an enantiomeric detector for the D enantiomer producing a peak in the voltammogram at ca. 0.7 V (vs. SCE) while the inverse is true for the (−) polymer, which detects the L enantiomer.

Abstract

Abstract: Hollow fibre carbon membranes (HFCMs) were fabricated from deacetylated cellulose acetate precursors based on a multi-dwell carbonization protocol. Membrane structure and morphology were characterized by scanning electronic microscope (SEM), and membrane separation performances for single gas and gas mixtures were tested by the in-house gas test setup. Simulations of CO2 capture by hollow fibre carbon membranes were conducted based on Aspen Hysys® integrated with ChemBrane. The characteristic diagrams and optimal configuration were obtained, and the process was optimized based on the necessary membrane area, energy demands for the compressor and cooler, recovery and purity of CO2, and capital cost. 23. Preparation of Silicon Nanostructures for Lithium Ion Battery Anodes

Abstract

One important challenge, among several others, in using silicon nanostructures as anodes in lithium ion batteries concerns finding cost effective fabrication routes for their connection to a suitable current collector. Here we present synthesis and characterization of silicon nanostructures by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition and template assisted electrodeposition on conducting substrates. The two methods give materials with different morphologies. Silicon nanowires were grown by chemical vapor deposition utilizing the gold catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid growth mechanism. A decrease in the nucleation time for silicon wire growth on stainless steel and aluminum substrates was observed with increasing growth temperature and SiH4 pressure. The utilization of plasma enhancement resulted in the formation of silicon thin films. Copper substrates, without diffusion barrier, were found to be unsuitable for gold catalyzed vapor-liquid-solid growth. Silicon films and dots were deposited on copper and copper/gold substrates by template assisted electrochemical deposition in ionic liquids.

Abstract

Coin cells with lithium and graphite electrodes were assembled using different combinations of graphite material and electrolyte. Specifically, three commercially available graphite materials and five electrolyte compositions were studied. The cells were discharge-charge cycled with varying parameters in order to determine the performance of the graphite materials and electrolytes. Particularly, a temperature chamber was employed to cycle some cells at temperatures between 0 and 40°C to find the significance of the electrolyte composition and graphite material on the cell performance at these temperatures. The cycled cells were disassembled and samples from the graphite electrode soaked with electrolyte were prepared for thermal analysis, specifically differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The thermal stability of the graphite electrodes and the influence from the graphite and electrolyte properties and the cycling parameters were analysed. In order to facilitate the interpretation of the results from discharge-charge cycling at different temperatures, DSC analysis from -80 to +50°C was performed on the pure electrolytes.Confirming previous studies, it was found that both the thermal stability and cycling performance were highly influenced by the properties of a solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), situated between the graphite surface and the electrolyte and formed during cycling. The three graphites were good substrates for stable SEI formation, exhibited by high thermal stability after being cycled at room temperature. After cycling with a temperature program, subjecting the cells to temperatures between 0 and 40°C, the thermal stability was generally reduced. This was attributed to increased SEI formation. The properties of both the electrolyte and graphite influenced the SEI and consequent thermal stability, though in different ways.The cell capacity was considerably reduced upon cycling at lower temperatures, such as 10 and 0°C. The results indicate that the electrolyte properties, particularly the viscosity and resulting conductivity, played the most important role in determining the cell performance. Low viscosity electrolyte components should be utilised, maintaining the electrolyte conductivity even at reduced temperatures. The graphite properties did not influence the cell performance at the temperatures studied. Advice is given on which electrolyte components should be avoided to build Li-ion cells performing acceptably at temperatures from 0 to 40°C.
