Abstract

type:Journal Article, In this study, yttrium-doped CeO2 was introduced into polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) through one-step hydrothermal reaction to form the Y-doped CeO2/PCN (YCC) nanocomposited photocatalysts. Morphology of products was observed by emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). The structure of the products was characterized by X-ray diffractometer (XRD), FT-IR and Raman analysis. Optical absorption and band energy properties were investigated by UV–vis, PL and VB-XPS spectra. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results further revealed that the surface active oxygen and Ce3+ concentration of nanocomposited photocatalyst were significantly increased compared with pure CeO2 and PCN counterparts. The YCC composites exhibited excellent photoredox performance under visible light irradiation, affording to 5.73- and 3.74-fold higher for RhB degradation and proton photoreduction to produce H2 than that of pure CeO2. The Y-doped nanocomposited means adopted in this study not only improve the optical utilization of visible light, but also effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers, which are conducive to promote the photoredox performance synergistically.

2. A facile approach to build Bi2O2CO3/PCN nanohybrid photocatalysts for gaseous acetaldehyde efficient removal

Abstract

type:Journal Article, Constructing heterojunction between two semiconductors is a cost-effective pathway to fabricate efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation and energy-related applications, which is with profound significance and high desirability to contemporary era. In this work, we demonstrate an extremely facile approach to couple bismuth subcarbonate with polymeric carbon nitride (denoted as BIOC@PCN) by ion exchange between home-made rose-like Bi2O2(OH)(NO3) (denoted as BION) and PCN bulks at 433 K solvothermal condition. PCN bulks play multi-roles in this ingenious one-pot method. Firstly, PCN bulks guarantee the negatively charged surface to anchor plentiful bismuth precursor salts. More importantly, solvothermal treatment affords a weak basic and sufficient CO32− ions environment to promote the following ion exchange reaction. The evolution of morphology, components and structure from rose-like BION to BIOC@PCN were symmetrically characterized by means of SEM, HR-TEM, XRD, FTIR, TG, UV–vis, BET-BJH and XPS. The as-prepared nanohybrid photocatalyst (0.5BIOC@PCN) presents optimal photocatalytic performance for gaseous acetaldehyde removal, which is showing 10, 6.5 and 2 times higher than that of the PCN-Bulk, BION and mechanical mixed BIOC/PCN counterparts, respectively. Transient photocurrent response and EPR results further verify the validity of the established heterojunction of BIOC@PCN in facilitating the separation of charge carriers. The performance improvement gains from the efficient separation of charge carriers in BIOC@PCN heterojunction, manifested by PL spectra, transient photocurrent response and EPR results. Abstract

Excited states of the odd–odd nucleus 74 As have been investigated via heavy ion fusion evaporation reaction Zn70(Li7,3n)As74 at beam energy of 30 MeV. The properties of the positive- and the negative- parity bands can be interpreted in terms of the Cranked Nilsson–Strutinsky (CNS) model calculations which show that the observed bands are built on the triaxial deformed shape. The inversion of the favored and unfavored signature branches observed in the positive-parity bands presents at high spins rather than normal signature inversion occurs at low spins. This phenomenon may be explained as the origin of unpaired band crossing in a highly rotating triaxial nucleus.

Abstract

International audience; Filamentous fungi can regulate their growth mechanisms to adapt to the environment and form different morphologies. On solid media, their first action is generally to adhere to a surface and form an approximately planar shape on a flat substrate. In a threedimensional (3D) modelling approach, this environment is therefore heterogeneous along the z-direction. To clarify the interactions between hyphal behaviours and this heterogeneous environment, a 3D discrete model was developed. This model applied a special lattice-based approach which eliminates the restriction of lattice configuration to the simulated mycelia networks while maintaining high computational efficiency. It incorporates explicitly the mechanisms of hyphal elongation, apical and lateral branching, anastomosis and tropism, and is rigorously validated by the experimental data on Postia placenta growth on malt extract agar. Results compared with experimental data showed that the presence of substrate at z = 0 bends the extension direction of hyphae towards the substrate surface. To mimic the experimental data, the bending rate was determined by an exponential-like tropism. Moreover, the branching direction was also constrained on the stage of its emergence. Compared to a simpler 2D model, the simulations of the 3D model were closer to actual growth, hence leading to a realistic mycelial network in terms of both configuration and biomass density. This 3D model can be easily extended to investigate fungal growth in other scenarios, such as for solid-state fermentation in incorporating hyphal penetration, in obstructed environments and even in wood panels.

Abstract

International audience; Due to the network-shaped colony formed by the filamentous fungi, fractional operators are likely to capture the time-evolution of their biomass distribution. In this paper, a gen- eralised fractional transport model is developed to simulate the colony growth of a wood- rot fungus, Postia placenta . The colony is described by two variables, active and inactive biomass. The active biomass corresponds to the tips and the “active points”, responsible for biomass formation, while the inactive component represents the remaining biomass, which is assumed immobile. The fractional in time and space derivatives are applied to the active biomass to represent the spatial colonisation (i.e., tip movement). The prolifera- tion of biomass (local densification of the network due to branching) is driven by a source term, while a portion of active biomass becomes inactive over time. The model is solved using an extended finite volume discretisation scheme and the accuracy is confirmed by comparison to an analytic solution obtained for the case where the source term is as- sumed linear. Next, the model parameters are identified for an optimized solution of the model that matches experimental observations well, indicating the suitability of the frac- tional operators for modelling biomass diffusion in a fungal colony. An interesting finding is that the best results are obtained when only anomalous diffusion in space (not time) is considered, which is probably related to the fractal dimension of mycelia. The spatial fractional–order derivative provides a unique ability to capture the non-local biomass dif- fusion of the fungal colony. We postulate that the fractional indices may provide a form of biological marker for the growth characteristics of different fungal species.

Abstract

Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) has been considered potential candidate material for the high-performance photovoltaic and photo-detecting application due to its significant optical absorption coefficient (∼105), suitable direct band gap (1.0–1.2 eV), low toxicity, and natural abundance in the crust. To overcome its low electrical conductivity and low-charge carrier density deficiencies, we propose a one-step melting quenching method strategy to prepare Cl− doped Sb2Se3 semiconductors. The photocurrent density of Sb2(Se0.9983Cl0.0017)3 crystal was greatly improved, with fast response speed and photo-response stability. The Sb2(Se0.9983Cl0.0017)3 films were then fabricated with rapid thermal evaporation. The beneficial effect of Sb2(Se0.9983Cl0.0017)3 films on photoelectric performance enhancement is confirmed by researching aspects such as heat treatment-dependent morphology, growth orientation and photoconductivity.

Abstract

International audience; Cadmium sulfide (CdS) buffer layer is commonly used in Kesterite Cu(2) ZnSn(S,Se)(4) (CZTSSe) thin film solar cells. However, the toxicity of Cadmium (Cd) and perilous waste, which is generated during the deposition process (chemical bath deposition), and the narrow bandgap (≈2.4 eV) of CdS restrict its large-scale future application. Herein, the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method is proposed to deposit zinc-tin-oxide (ZTO) as a buffer layer in Ag-doped CZTSSe solar cells. It is found that the ZTO buffer layer improves the band alignment at the Ag-CZTSSe/ZTO heterojunction interface. The smaller contact potential difference of the ZTO facilitates the extraction of charge carriers and promotes carrier transport. The better p-n junction quality helps to improve the open-circuit voltage (V(OC) ) and fill factor (FF). Meanwhile, the wider bandgap of ZTO assists to transfer more photons to the CZTSSe absorber, and more photocarriers are generated thus improving short-circuit current density (Jsc). Ultimately, Ag-CZTSSe/ZTO device with 10 nm thick ZTO layer and 5:1 (Zn:Sn) ratio, Sn/(Sn + Zn): 0.28 deliver a superior power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.8%. As far as it is known that 11.8% is the highest efficiency among Cd-free kesterite thin film solar cells.

Abstract

International audience; Kesterite-based Cu(2)ZnSnS(4) (CZTS) thin-film photovoltaics involve a serious interfacial dilemma, leading to severe recombination of carriers and insufficient band alignment at the CZTS/CdS heterojunction. Herein, an interface modification scheme by aluminum doping is introduced for CZTS/CdS via a spin coating method combined with heat treatment. The thermal annealing of the kesterite/CdS junction drives the migration of doped Al from CdS to the absorber, achieving an effective ion substitution and interface passivation. This condition greatly reduces interface recombination and improves device fill factor and current density. The J(SC) and FF of the champion device increased from 18.01 to 22.33 mA cm(-2) and 60.24 to 64.06%, respectively, owing to the optimized band alignment and remarkably enhanced charge carrier generation, separation, and transport. Consequently, a photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 8.65% was achieved, representing the highest efficiency in CZTS thin-film solar cells fabricated by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) to date. This work proposed a facile strategy for interfacial engineering treatment, opening a valuable avenue to overcome the efficiency bottleneck of CZTS thin-film solar cells.

Abstract

International audience; The (100) surface of alpha-MoO3 (α-MoO3) should possess overwhelmingly more exposed Mo than the (010), and the exposed Mo has been extensively considered as active site for amine adsorption. However, α-MoO3 (100) has drawn little attention concerning amine sensing mechanism. In this research, adsorption of ammonia (NH3), monomethylamine (MMA), dimethylamine (DMA), and trimethylamine (TMA) is systematically investigated by density functional theory (DFT). All of these four molecules have high affinity to α-MoO3 (100) through interaction between the N and the exposed Mo, and the affinity is mainly influenced by number of methyl group and number of N-connected H. Adsorption and dissociation of water and oxygen molecule on stoichiometric or defective α-MoO3 (100) surface are then simulated to fully understand surface chemistry of α-MoO3 (100) in practical condition. At low temperature α-MoO3 (100) must be covered with lots of water molecule; the water can desorb or dissociate into hydroxyl groups at high temperature. Oxygen vacancy (VO) can be generated considering the annealing process during sensor device fabrication; VO must be filled with O2 molecule, which can further interact with adsorbed water nearby to form hydroxyl groups. According to this research, α-MoO3 (100) must be the active surface for amine sensing and its surface chemistry is well understood. In near future, further reaction and interaction will be simulated at α-MoO3 (100), and much more attention should be paid to α-MoO3 (100) not only theoretically but also experimentally.

Abstract

User-defined higher-order rewrite rules are becoming a standard in proof assistants based on intuitionistic type theory. This raises the question of proving that they preserve the properties of beta-reductions for the corresponding type systems. In a series of papers, we develop techniques based on van Oostrom’s decreasing diagrams that reduce confluence proofs to the checking of various forms of critical pairs for higher-order rewrite rules extending beta-reduction on pure lambda-terms. As shown in a previous paper of the two middle authors, confluence of a terminating set of left-linear rewrite rules is obtained when their critical pairs are joinable, beta-rewrite steps being disallowed. The present paper concentrates on the case where arbitrary beta-rewrite steps are allowed for joining critical pairs. The rewrite relation used for analyzing confluence may rewrite arbitrarily many non-overlapping redexes in a single step. This relation gives rise to critical pairs that overlap both horizontally, as with parallel rewriting, but also vertically, forming chains of successive overlaps. Practical examples of use of this technique are analyzed.

Abstract

PurposeToday's logistics industry is facing severe challenges since global transportation demand increases substantially. Carriers are urged to reduce empty loads and CO2 emissions through collaboration. Therefore, the concept of Physical Internet (PI) came into being. However, PI is still in its infancy. It is difficult to understand its sophisticated coordination mechanism, which makes learning of the concept more complicated.Design/methodology/approachGamification is an effective approach to help students improve their learning curve. At the same time, the psychological and behavioral changes in learning will also pose an impact on learning efficiency. This paper introduces a PI transportation game and designs a set of gamification teaching experiments. In the experiment, a control group and three experimental groups are set up, and the experiment was designed to respond to a plethora of research questions using the methods of T-test, correlation analysis and regression analysis. Experimental results were analyzed through the method of multivariate statistics.FindingsThis paper looks for superior pedagogical methods and procedures for students to learn PI while providing suggestions for PI's learning among undergraduates. The authors found (1) gamification teaching will make participants feel more satisfied and master more knowledge points; (2) the scores of logistics testing have been significantly improved after gamification teaching and (3) flow experience has a significant impact on game revenue.Originality/valueThis is the first study about the impact of gamification on teaching and learning PI. The authors apply the methods of T-test, correlation analysis and regression analysis to analyze the collected data. The paper proves that gamification can help students learn PI and that flow experience can improve the efficiency of students learning PI.

Abstract

In this paper we propose a new line segment detection framework based on a novel Pixel Orientation Estimation (POE) method, which detects line segments from binary edge maps and can be combined with any edge detectors. We show its efficiency by testing it in SAR images. The proposed POE based line segment detection framework aims to leverage the success of deep learning models for edge detection in 1-look SAR images. The novel Pixel Orientation Estimation method estimates the orientation of each edge pixel by counting the number of edge pixels along a set of orientations. As the most edge pixels exist along the orientation of the line segment, the orientation of the edge pixel is given by the orientation that gives the maximum number of counts. Counting the number of edge pixels along different orientations is equivalent to convolving the local neighbourhood of an edge pixel with a set of carefully designed window functions with each window function corresponding to a fixed orientation. With the estimated orientations of pixels in the edge map, pixels can be grouped with a region growing step to form line support regions. Regions with their size larger than a size threshold will be accepted. Finally, rectangles are used to approximate the accepted regions and those rectangles are detected line segments. Experiments in both simulated SAR dataset and real SAR images demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method. In particular, we advance the state-of-the-art performances by 18 percent (F1-score) on the 1look dataset simulated from YorkUrban-LineSegment Dataset.

Abstract

International audience; The Skutterudites CoSb(3) material has been the focus of research for the conversion applications of waste heat to electricity due to its ability to accommodate a large variety of ions in the cages that have been proven effective in improving the thermoelectric performance. Although the co-doped CoSb(3) bulk materials have attracted increasing attention and have been widely studied, co-doped CoSb(3) thin films have been rarely reported. In this work, Ag and Ti were co-doped into CoSb(3) thin films via a facile in situ growth method, and the influence of doping content in the thermoelectric properties was investigated. The results show that all the Ag and Ti co-doped CoSb(3) thin films contain a pure well-crystallized CoSb(3) phase. Compared to the un-doped thin film, the co-doped samples show simultaneous increase in the Seebeck coefficient and the electrical conductivity, leading to a distinctly enhanced power factor. The high power factor value can reach ~0.31 mWm(-1)K(-2) at 623 K after appropriate co-doping, which is two times the value of the un-doped thin film we have been obtained. All the results show that the co-doping is efficient in optimizing the performance of the CoSb(3) thin films; the key point is to control the doping element content so as to obtain high thermoelectric properties.

Abstract

International audience; Exhibiting outstanding optoelectronic properties, antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) has attracted considerable interest and has been developed as a light absorber layer for thin-film solar cells over the decade. However, current state-of-the-art Sb2Se3 devices suffer from unsatisfactory "cliff-like" band alignment and severe interface recombination loss, which deteriorates device performance. In this study, the heterojunction interface of an Sb2Se3 solar cell is improved by introducing effective aluminum (Al3+) cation into the CdS buffer layer. Then, the energy band alignment of Sb2Se3/CdS:Al heterojunction is modified from a "cliff-like" structure to a "spike-like" structure. Finally, heterojunction interface engineering suppresses recombination losses and strengthens carrier transport, resulting in a high efficiency of 8.41% for the substrate-structured Sb2Se3 solar cell. This study proposes a facile strategy for interfacial treatment and elucidates the related carrier transport enhancement mechanism, paving a bright avenue to overcome the efficiency bottleneck of Sb2Se3 thin-film solar cells.

Abstract

International audience; All-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs) have received much attention because of their potential for high energy density and high safety performance. However, the poor compatibility of the lithium/solid electrolytes (SEs) interface and the penetration of lithium dendrites during cycling prevent them from achieving current densities that are capable of commercialization. In this work, a lithium-metastable solid electrolyte and a lithium-unstable solid electrolyte have been mixed to obtain mix-structured solid electrolyte. In particular, Li5.5PS4.5Cl1.5 acts as a lithium-compatible matrix, and Li10SnP2S12 as a dendrite-scavenger. The synergy between the two generates a stable interface with the Li anode and effectively suppresses the penetration of lithium dendrites. Li symmetric cells can operate stably for 160 h at a current density of 0.5 mA cm-2 at room temperature. The critical current density can reach 5 mA cm-2 and the overpotential is less than 0.5 V. The Li/SEs/Li4Ti5O12 all-solid-state cells show a high capacity of 174 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C and 148 mAh g-1 at 2 C. High-capacity retentions of 97.3% and 94.4% are shown after 75 cycles at 1 C and 2 C at room temperature, respectively. This work highlights the advantages of the electrolyte with mixed structure and provides a new strategy to resist lithium dendrites and improve the critical current density and cycle life of ASSLMBs.

Abstract

International audience; Using solid-liquid hybrid electrolytes is an effective strategy to overcome the large solid/solid interfacial resistance in all-solid-state batteries and the safety problems in liquid batteries. The properties of the solid/liquid electrolyte interphase layer (SLEI) are essential for the performance of solid-liquid hybrid electrolytes. In this work, the solvation reactions between Li(2)S-P(2)S(5) glass-ceramic solid electrolytes (SEs) and ether electrolytes were studied, and their influence on the SLEI was examined. Although 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME) reacted with the Li(2)S-P(2)S(5) glass-ceramic SE to form a dense SLEI, 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) severely corroded the SE, resulting in a loose SLEI. Consequently, a stable SLEI formed with DME. Using a combination of the Li(2)S-P(2)S(5) glass-ceramic SE and the DME-based liquid electrolyte (LE), stable lithium plating/stripping cycles over 1000 h and a hybrid Li-S battery that retained a specific capacity of 730 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles were demonstrated. The knowledge of the reactions between the sulfide electrolytes and the organic LEs is instructive for the design of stable sulfide-liquid hybrid electrolytes for advanced batteries.

Abstract

International audience; Graph processing is a popular computing model for big data analytics. Emerging big data applications are often maintained in multiple geographically distributed (geo-distributed) data centers (DCs) to provide low-latency services to global users. Graph processing in geo-distributed DCs suffers from costly inter-DC data communications. Furthermore, due to increasing privacy concerns, geo-distribution imposes diverse, strict, and often asymmetric privacy regulations that constrain geo-distributed graph processing. Existing graph processing systems fail to address these two challenges. In this paper, we design and implement PGPregel, which is an end-to-end system that provides privacy-preserving graph processing in geo-distributed DCs with low latency and high utility. To ensure privacy, PGPregel smartly integrates Differential Privacy into graph processing systems with the help of two core techniques, namely sampling and combiners, to reduce the amount of inter-DC data transfer while preserving good accuracy of graph processing results. We implement our design in Giraph and evaluate it in real cloud DCs. Results show that PGPregel can preserve the privacy of graph data with low overhead and good accuracy.

Abstract

Mosquitoes are important vectors for many arboviruses. It is becoming increasingly clear that various symbiotic microorganisms (including bacteria and insect-specific viruses; ISVs) in mosquitoes have the potential to modulate the ability of mosquitoes to transmit arboviruses. In this study, we compared the bacteriome and virome (both eukaryotic viruses and bacteriophages) of female adult Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus mosquitoes fed with sucrose/water, blood, or blood spiked with Zika virus (ZIKV) or West Nile virus (WNV), respectively. Furthermore, we investigated associations between the microbiota and vector competence. We show that the influence of arboviruses on the mosquito microbiome-and vice versa-is distinct for each combination of arbovirus/mosquito species. The presence of ZIKV resulted in a temporarily increased Aedes ISV diversity. However, this effect was distinct for different ISVs: some ISVs decreased following the blood meal (Aedes aegypti totivirus), whereas other ISVs increased only when the blood contained ZIKV (Guadeloupe mosquito virus). Also, the diversity of the Aedes bacteriome depended on the diet and the presence of ZIKV, with a lower diversity observed for mosquitoes receiving blood without ZIKV. In Cx. quinquefasciatus, some ISVs increased in WNV-infected mosquitoes (Guadeloupe Culex tymo-like virus). Particularly, the presence of Wenzhou sobemo-like virus 3 (WSLV3) was associated with the absence of infectious WNV in mosquito heads, suggesting that WSLV3 might affect vector competence for WNV. Distinct profiles of bacteriophages were identified in Culex mosquitoes depending on diet, despite the lack of clear changes in the bacteriome. Overall, our data demonstrate a complex three-way interaction among arboviruses, resident microbiota, and the host, which is distinct for different arbovirus-mosquito combinations. A better understanding of these interactions may lead to the identification of microbiota able to suppress the ability of arbovirus transmission to humans, and hence improved arbovirus control measures. IMPORTANCE In this study, we first utilized the single mosquito microbiome analysis, demonstrating a complex three-way interaction among arboviruses, resident microbiota, and the host, which is distinct for different arbovirus-mosquito combinations. Some of the previously described "core virus" increased in the mosquitos receiving viral blood meal, like Guadeloupe mosquito virus and Guadeloupe Culex tymo-like virus, suggesting their potential roles in ZIKV and WNV infection. Notably, Wenzhou sobemo-like virus 3 was associated with the absence of infectious WNV in heads of Culex mosquitoes, which might affect vector competence for WNV. Abstract

International audience; As graph databases become widespread, JTC1 -- the committee in joint charge of information technology standards for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) -- has approved a project to create GQL, a standard property graph query language. This complements a project to extend SQL with a new part, SQL/PGQ, which specifies how to define graph views over an SQL tabular schema, and to run read-only queries against them. Both projects have been assigned to the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC32 working group for Database Languages, WG3, which continues to maintain and enhance SQL as a whole. This common responsibility helps enforce a policy that the identical core of both PGQ and GQL is a graph pattern matching sub-language, here termed GPML. The WG3 design process is also analyzed by an academic working group, part of the Linked Data Benchmark Council (LDBC), whose task is to produce a formal semantics of these graph data languages, which complements their standard specifications. This paper, written by members of WG3 and LDBC, presents the key elements of the GPML of SQL/PGQ and GQL in advance of the publication of these new standards.

Abstract

International audience; The Depth-Image-Based-Rendering (DIBR) is one of the main fundamental technique to generate new views in 3D video applications, such as Multi-View Videos (MVV), Free-Viewpoint Videos (FVV) and Virtual Reality (VR). However, the quality assessment of DIBR-synthesized views is quite different from the traditional 2D images/videos. In recent years, several efforts have been made towards this topic, but there is a lack of detailed survey in the literature. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey on various current approaches for DIBR-synthesized views. The current accessible datasets of DIBR-synthesized views are firstly reviewed, followed by a summary analysis of the representative state-of-the-art objective metrics. Then, the performances of different objective metrics are evaluated and discussed on all available datasets. Finally, we discuss the potential challenges and suggest possible directions for future research.

Abstract

International audience; Controlling the composition and microstructure of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer is critical to improving the cycling stability of the high-energy-density lithium-metal electrode. It is a quite tricky task to control the properties of the SEI layer which is conventionally formed by the chemical reactions between a Li metal and the additives. Herein, we develop a new route to synthesize a lithium-compatible sol of the sulfide electrolyte Li(3)PS(4), so that a Li(3)PS(4) artificial SEI layer with a controllable nanoscale thickness and high phase purity can be prepared by spin-coating. The layer stabilizes the lithium/electrolyte interface by homogenizing the Li-ion flux, preventing the parasitic reactions, and alleviating concentration polarization. Consequently, a symmetrical cell with the Li(3)PS(4)-modified lithium electrodes can achieve stable lithium plating/stripping for 800 h at a current density of 1 mA cm(-2). The Li-S batteries assembled with the Li(3)PS(4)-protected Li anodes show better capacity retention than their bare Li counterparts, whose average decay rate from the 240th cycle to the 800th cycle is only 0.004%/cycle. In addition, the Li(3)PS(4) layer improves the rate capacity of the batteries, significantly enhancing the capacity from 175 to 682 mA h g(-1) at a 2 C rate. The spin-coated Li(3)PS(4) artificial SEI layer provides a new strategy to develop high-performance Li metal batteries.

Abstract

Current mortality due to the Covid-19 pandemic (approximately 1.2 million by November 2020) demonstrates the lack of an effective treatment. As replication of many viruses - including MERS-CoV - is supported by enhanced aerobic glycolysis, we hypothesized that SARS-CoV-2 replication in host cells (especially airway cells) is reliant upon altered glucose metabolism. This metabolism is similar to the Warburg effect well studied in cancer. Counteracting two main pathways (PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK signaling) sustaining aerobic glycolysis inhibits MERS-CoV replication and thus, very likely that of SARS-CoV-2, which shares many similarities with MERS-CoV. The Warburg effect appears to be involved in several steps of COVID-19 infection. Once induced by hypoxia, the Warburg effect becomes active in lung endothelial cells, particularly in the presence of atherosclerosis, thereby promoting vasoconstriction and micro thrombosis. Aerobic glycolysis also supports activation of pro-inflammatory cells such as neutrophils and M1 macrophages. As the anti-inflammatory response and reparative process is performed by M2 macrophages reliant on oxidative metabolism, we speculated that the switch to oxidative metabolism in M2 macrophages would not occur at the appropriate time due to an uncontrolled pro-inflammatory cascade. Aging, mitochondrial senescence and enzyme dysfunction, AMPK downregulation and p53 inactivation could all play a role in this key biochemical event. Understanding the role of the Warburg effect in COVID-19 can be essential to developing molecules reducing infectivity, arresting endothelial cells activation and the pro-inflammatory cascade., Highlights • Enhanced aerobic glycolysis supports replication of many viruses including MERS-CoV. • PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK inhibitors arrest MERS-CoV replication. • This metabolism likely sustains SARS-CoV-2 replication in host cells, in particular airway cells . • The Warburg effect also supports activation of endothelial cells and pro-inflammatory cells .

Abstract

International audience; It is well known that the electrical conductance of molecular junctions in the tunneling regime varies exponentially with the length of the molecular backbone. This behavior is strongly influenced by anchoring groups, which connect the molecular backbone to the electrodes and locate the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) resonances with respect to the Fermi level. Nevertheless, most of the studies have been performed on symmetric junctions, namely, using the same electrodes and anchoring groups at both sides of the junctions. Only recently, there have been some reports detailing the influence of introducing asymmetry into single-molecule junctions, using different contacts or different anchoring groups at either end of the molecular bridge. These studies have revealed that such junction asymmetry strongly impacts electrical characteristics. In this study, Au and graphene electrodes were used to provide asymmetry to a single-molecule junction. The conductance and length dependence of amine and methyl sulfide-terminated oligo(phenylene ethynylene) have been determined experimentally and theoretically. The impact of introducing this asymmetry has been quantified by comparing the conductance and β values of oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE)based molecules within Au/Au electrodes and Au/graphene junctions, respectively. Our results show that the introduction of a graphene electrode leads to lower conductance values and attenuation factors, similar to what has been previously observed in alkane chains. This is attributed to a shift of the electronic molecular levels toward the Fermi level, mainly driven by acetylene groups linking adjacent phenyl groups.

Abstract

International audience; Antimony selenide (Sb(2) Se(3) ) is an ideal photovoltaic candidate profiting from its advantageous material characteristics and superior optoelectronic properties, and has gained considerable development in recent years. However, the further device efficiency breakthrough is largely plagued by severe open-circuit voltage (V(OC) ) deficit under the existence of multiple defect states and detrimental recombination loss. In this work, an effective absorber layer growth engineering involved with vapor transport deposition and post-selenization is developed to grow Sb(2) Se(3) thin films. High-quality Sb(2) Se(3) with large compact crystal grains, benign [hk1] growth orientation, stoichiometric chemical composition, and suitable direct bandgap are successfully fulfilled under an optimized post-selenization scenario. Planar Sb(2) Se(3) thin-film solar cells with substrate configuration of Mo/Sb(2) Se(3) /CdS/ITO/Ag are constructed. By contrast, such engineering effort can remarkably mitigate the device V(OC) deficit, owing to the healed detrimental defects, the suppressed interface and space-charge region recombination, the prolonged carrier lifetime, and the enhanced charge transport. Accordingly, a minimum V(OC) deficit of 0.647 V contributes to a record V(OC) of 0.513 V, a champion device with highly interesting efficiency of 7.40% is also comparable to those state-of-the-art Sb(2) Se(3) solar cells, paving a bright avenue to broaden its scope of photovoltaic applications.

Abstract

International audience; Despite the fact that antimony triselenide (Sb(2) Se(3) ) thin-film solar cell has undergone rapid development in recent years, the large open-circuit voltage (V(OC) ) deficit still remains to be the biggest bottleneck as even the world record device suffers from a large V(OC) deficit of 0.59 V. Here, an effective interface engineering approach is reported where the Sb(2) Se(3) /CdS heterojunction (HTJ) was subjected to a post-annealing treatment using rapid thermal process. It was found that non-radiative recombination near the Sb(2) Se(3) /CdS HTJ including interface recombination and space charge region recombination were greatly suppressed after the HTJ annealing treatment. Ultimately, a substrate Sb(2) Se(3) /CdS thin-film solar cell with a competitive power conversion efficiency of 8.64% and a record V(OC) of 0.52 V has been successfully fabricated. The device exhibits a much mitigated V(OC) deficit of 0.49 V, which is lower than that of any other reported efficient antimony chalcogenide solar cell. This article is protected by copyright. In a large international collaboration (Study 1, N = 49,968 across 67 countries), we investigated self-reported factors associated with public health behaviours (e.g., spatial distancing and stricter hygiene) and endorsed public policy interventions (e.g., closing bars and restaurants) during the early stage of the COVID-19 pandemic (April-May 2020). Respondents who reported identifying more strongly with their nation consistently reported greater engagement in public health behaviours and support for public health policies. Results were similar for representative and non-representative national samples. Study 2 (N = 42 countries) conceptually replicated the central finding using aggregate indices of national identity (obtained using the World Values Survey) and a measure of actual behaviour change during the pandemic (obtained from Google mobility reports). Higher levels of national identification prior to the pandemic predicted lower mobility during the early stage of the pandemic (r = −0.40). We discuss the potential implications of links between national identity, leadership, and public health for managing COVID-19 and future pandemics.

Abstract

International audience; Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neuroinflammatory disease characterized by immune cell infiltration in the central nervous system and destruction of myelin sheaths. Alterations of gut bacteria abundances are present in MS patients. In mouse models of neuroinflammation, depletion of microbiota results in amelioration of symptoms, and gavage with MS patient microbiota exacerbates the disease and inflammation via Th17 cells. On the other hand, depletion of B cells using anti-CD20 is an efficient therapy in MS, and growing evidence shows an important deleterious role of B cells in MS pathology. However, the failure of TACI-Ig treatment in MS highlighted the potential regulatory role of plasma cells. The mechanism was recently demonstrated involving IgA+ plasma cells, specific for gut microbiota and producing IL-10. IgA-coated bacteria in MS patient gut exhibit also modifications. We will focus our review on IgA interactions with gut microbiota and IgA+ B cells in MS. These recent data emphasize new pathways of neuroinflammation regulation in MS

Abstract

International audience; Antimony selenide (Sb2Se3) have developed as an environmental-friendly photoactive materials for low-cost photovoltaics due to its non-toxic elements and excellent optoelectronic properties. However, chemical bath deposited (CBD) CdS thin film was generally employed as electron transport layer (ETL) in substrate or superstrate structured Sb2Se3 solar cells, which was still a huge concern restraining its long-term advancement. In this work, we have replaced the toxic CdS film by employing ZnSnO films fabricated through magnetron co-sputtering technique to develop Cd-free ZnSnO/Sb2Se3 solar cells. It was observed that Sn/(Zn + Sn) in ZnSnO film affecting the energy band alignment with Sb2Se3 take part in improving the device efficiency. Substrate structured Cd-free Sb2Se3 based devices with a champion device performance of 3.44%, were firstly made with the optimized Zn0.57Sn0.43O buffer layer closely related to the rational band alignment, the reduced recombination losses at interface (ZnSnO/Sb2Se3), and efficient charge transfer. This substituted sputtering ZnSnO for CBD-CdS film demonstrated remarkable potential to efficient and Cd-free Sb2Se3 solar cell with full-vacuum process. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract

International audience; We report on sub-30 fs pulse generation from a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror mode-locked Yb:YAP laser. Pumping by a spatially single-mode Yb fiber laser at 979 nm, soliton pulses as short as 29 fs were generated at 1091 nm with an average output power of 156 mW and a pulse repetition rate of 85.1 MHz. The maximum output power of the mode-locked Yb:YAP laser amounted to 320 mW for slightly longer pulses (32 fs) at an incident pump power of 1.52 W, corresponding to a peak power of 103 kW and an optical efficiency of 20.5%. To the best of our knowledge, this result represents the shortest pulses ever achieved from any solid-state Yb laser mode-locked by a slow, i.e., physical saturable absorber.

Abstract

ZnO nanowires are excellent candidates for energy harvesters, mechanical sensors, piezotronic and piezophototronic devices. These nanowires are usually non-intentionally n-doped during their growth. The essential role of doping, surface traps and surface Fermi level pinning in the actual response of piezoelectric semiconductors has already been demonstrated. In order to go further, this paper investigates the influence of the density and of the dynamics of surface traps on such important parameters as the output generated potential and the effective piezoelectric coefficient. We implemented numerical simulations based on the finite element method by combining the mechanical, piezoelectric, and semiconducting characteristic of ZnO nanowires array based nanocomposites (the so-called vertically integrated nanogenerator configuration) operated in compression. It was found that a certain amount of surface traps was required to obtain a usable generated output potential from the studied devices in the range of dimensions and doping level reported in most experimental results. Moreover, the surface traps influence was strongly dependent on their dynamics. As a first step towards the analysis of traps dynamics, we compared the two extreme cases of ultra-slow and ultra-fast traps. The symmetry and asymmetry of the piezoelectric response and a comparison to thin film was also discussed. This study demonstrates that the realistic modelling of the piezoelectric response of semiconductor based transducers should account for traps dynamics effects.

Abstract

International audience; Searching for eco-friendly and earth-abundant materials to supersede traditional high-cost bismuth telluride for fabricating wearable devices is of great significance in thermoelectrics. In this work, promising flexible Cu2Se based thin films with high thermoelectric performance is successfully fabricated via a facile co-sputtering method. Experimental results indicate that excess Cu in Cu2Se films leads to the decrease of carrier concentration by suppressing the formation of Cu vacancies and donating electrons, benefiting to achieve high Seebeck coefficient. Moreover, Cu-excess Cu2Se films have highly (0l0) preferred orientation and extra high carrier mobility, maintaining the decent electrical conductivity in the whole measurement temperature range. Combined with the low thermal conductivity, a maximum ZT of 0.42 is obtained at 275 °C from the Cu-excess Cu2Se due to the simultaneous optimization both of electrical and heat transport. Subsequently, a flexible thermoelectric device assembled with high performance Cu2Se films exhibits a maximum power density of 4.28 Wm-2 at a temperature difference of 50 °C, which thermal stability is greatly improved after introducing a molybdenum buffer layer into electrode layer. Therefore, this work demonstrates that rational microstructure manipulations and connection technology improvement can achieve high performance in the flexible thermoelectric device, which possess potential in wearable applications.

We report on a soliton mode-locked Yb:Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 laser at ∼1.06 µm stabilized by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. Pumping with a single-transverse mode, fiber-coupled laser diode at 976 nm, the Yb:Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 laser delivers soliton pulses as short as 39 fs at a central wavelength of 1059.2 nm with an average output power of 70 mW and a pulse repetition rate of ∼67.3 MHz.

Abstract

International audience; Background Obesity is a major public health problem of our time as a risk factor for cardiometabolic disease and the available pharmacological tools needed to tackle the obesity pandemic are insufficient. Neurotensin (NTS) is a 13 amino acid peptide, which is derived from a larger precursor hormone called proneurotensin or Long Form NTS (LF NTS). NTS modulates neuro-transmitter release in the central system nervous, and facilitates intestinal fat absorption in the gastrointestinal tract. Mice lacking LF NTS are protected from high fat diet (HFD) induced obesity, hepatic steatosis and glucose intolerance. In humans, increased levels of LF NTS strongly and independently predict the development of obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease and mortality. With the perspective to develop therapeutic tools to neutralize LF NTS, we developed a monoclonal antibody, specifically inhibiting the function of the LF NTS (LF NTS mAb). This antibody was tested for the effects on body weight, metabolic parameters and behavior in mice made obese by high-fat diet. Methods C57bl/6j mice were subjected to high-fat diet (HFD) until they reached an obesity state, then food was switched to chow. Mice were treated with either PBS (control therapy) or LF NTS mAb at the dose of 5 mg/kg once a week (i.v.). Mice weight, plasma biochemical analysis, fat and muscle size and distribution and behavioral tests were performed during the losing weight period and the stabilization period. Results Obese mice treated with the LF NTS mAb lost weight significantly faster than the control treated group. LF NTS mAb treatment also resulted in smaller fat depots, increased fecal cholesterol excretion, reduced liver fat and larger muscle fiber size. Moreover, mice on active therapy were also less stressed, more curious and more active, providing a possible explanation to their weight loss. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that in mice subjected to HFD-induced obesity, a blockade of LF NTS with a monoclonal antibody results in reduced body weight, adipocyte volume and increased muscle fiber size, possibly explained by beneficial effects on behavior. The underlying mechanisms as well as any future role of LF NTS mAb as an anti-obesity agent warrants further studies.

Abstract

We report on the first passively mode-locked femtosecond-laser operation of a disordered Yb:Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 crystal using a SEmiconductor Saturable Absorber Mirror (SESAM). Pumping with a single-transverse mode fiber-coupled laser diode at 976 nm, nearly Fourier-transform-limited pulses as short as 96 fs are generated at 1045 nm with an average output power of 205 mW and a pulse repetition rate of ~67.3 MHz. In the continuous-wave regime, high slope efficiency up to 59.2% and low laser thresholds down to 25 mW are obtained. Continuous wavelength tuning between 1006–1074 nm (a tuning range of 68 nm) is demonstrated. Yb:Ca3Gd2(BO3)4 crystals are promising for the development of ultrafast lasers at ~1 μm.

Abstract

International audience; Understanding the electrochemical processes in all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur batteries is essential for designing high-performance devices. Here, the evolution of the electrochemical impedance spectra of an all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur battery during one charge/discharge cycle was quantitatively investigated with a reasonably established equivalent circuit. The impedance spectra could be decomposed into several parts as follows: the bulk resistance of solid electrolyte and current collector at highest frequency, three semicircles from high to low frequency corresponding to the dynamic processes at different interfaces and a 45° straight line followed by an inclined small tail at low frequency. It is found that the middle frequency semicircle, corresponding to charge transfer at the cathode, varied obviously during the charge/discharge cycle. Moreover, the 45° straight line, which is attributed to the Li diffusion in the cathode material LixS based on qualitative analysis, dominates the impedance spectra, revealing that the main kinetics-limiting factor is the Li diffusion in the active materials. Finally, an electrochemical model of the battery is proposed which provides insight for the designing of high-performance all-solid-state lithium‑sulfur batteries.

Abstract

We report on a Kerr-lens mode-locked Yb:YAlO3 laser generating soliton pulses as short as 24 fs at 1085 nm with an average output power of 186 mW and a pulse repetition rate of 87.5 MHz, representing the shortest pulses ever achieved from any mode-locked laser based on Yb3+-doped structurally ordered crystal. Optimized for power-scalable operation, the Yb:YAlO3 laser delivers 1.9 W at 1060 nm at the expense of a longer pulse duration of 44 fs, corresponding to a peak power of 462 kW and an optical efficiency of 43.2%.
