Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the genomic epidemiology of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in China to identify predominant lineages and their associations with clinical data and antimicrobial resistance profiles. Methods We performed a national prevalence study of patients with S. aureus infections in 22 tertiary hospitals in China from 2015 to 2017. Clinical data from patients and the antimicrobial phenotypes were collected for each isolate. Genome sequencing was performed on a proportion of isolates and a phylogenetic analysis was undertaken. Genotypic and phenotypic β-lactam susceptibilities were compared. Results A total of 1900 patients with S. aureus infections were included, of which 40% involved MRSA. Community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) infections were 24% of the total isolates. Genomic data showed that more than three-quarters of the MRSA were from three dominant lineages CC239 (25%, 116/471), CC5 (21%, 96/471) and CC59 (33%, 154/471) with CC59 accounting for more than half of the CA-MRSA isolates. Penicillin susceptibility genomic features were observed in 53% (251/470) of MRSA, including almost all of the CC59 (152/154) lineage, and 96% (242/251) of these isolates demonstrated in vitro susceptibility to penicillin or amoxicillin combined with clavulanic acid. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the CC59 lineage can be divided into six lineages with all Asian CC59 isolates likely arising from an ancestral Mainland China lineage. Conclusions This study showed a high prevalence of CA-MRSA in China, largely due to the widespread presence of CC59. As almost all isolates in this lineage possess genetic variants leading to increased β-lactam susceptibility, we suggest that to improve antibiotic stewardship combinations of penicillins and β-lactamase inhibitors should be included in the antibiotic susceptibility testing panels used to inform treatment decisions and research undertaken on this combination therapy.

Salidroside (Sal), an active component from Rhodiola crenulata, has been confirmed to exert neuroprotective effects against hypoxia. However, its molecular mechanisms of intensifying mitochondrial function still largely unknown. In the present study, we aimed to explore the mechanisms by which Sal heightened mitochondrial function in CoClThe hypoxic condition of HT22 cells was performed by CoClSal alleviated CoCl2-induced hypoxic injury in HT22 cells as evidenced by increased cell viability and decreased LDH release. In vitro antioxidant test confirmed that Sal had marvelous antioxidant abilities. The protected mitochondrial function by Sal treatment was illustrated by the decrease of ROS, Ca2+, mitochondrial fragment and the increase of MMP. In addition, Sal ameliorated the apoptosis of HT22 cells by decreasing Hoechst 33342 positive cells and the rate of apoptotic cells. Enhancement of energy metabolism in HT22 by Sal was demonstrated by increased OCR, real-time ATP generation and proton efflux rate. The molecular docking confirmed the potential binding of Sal to PI3K, AKT and CaMK II proteins with calculated binding energy of -1.32, -4.21 and -4.38 kcal/mol, respectively. The MDS test revealed the average hydrogen bond of complex Sal-PI3K and Sal-AKT were 0.79 and 4.46, respectively. The results of LSPR verified the potential binding of Sal to proteins PI3K, AKT and HIF-1α with affinity values of 5.20 × 10 - 3, 2.83 × 10 - 3 and 3.97 × 10 - 3 KD, respectively. Western blot analysis further argued that Sal consolidated the levels of p-PI3K and p-AKT. Meanwhile, Sal could downregulate the proteins expression of p-JNK and p-p38.Collectively, our findings suggested that Sal can intensify mitochondrial function of CoCl2-simulated hypoxia injury in HT22 cells by stimulating PI3K-AKT-MAPK signaling pathway. Sal is a potential agent for mitochondrial protection against hypoxia with the underlying molecular mechanisms of energy metabolism being further elucidated.

The Zhenjiang-Yangzhou reach of the Yangtze River is located at the top of the Yangtze River Delta, which is one of the most dramatic changes in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The study on the migration characteristics of the channel centerline is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the river channel changes in the Zhenjiang-Yangzhou reach. In this study, a detailed calculation method is proposed to extract the channel centerline of the Zhenjiang-Yangzhou reach by using old maps and remote sensing satellite map and decompose it into seven parts. The spatial and temporal changes of Net Shift Distance (NSD), Cumulative Moving Distance (CMD), Migration Rate of Channel Centerline (MRCC) and Linear Regression Change Rate of channel centerline (LRCR) from 1865 to 2019 on the cross-section scale are studied. The results show that: (1) from 1868 to 2019, the channel centerline of the Zhenjiang-Yangzhou reach kept shifting. The average net displacement distance of the section is 1103.47 m on the right bank, and the average cumulative displacement distance of the section is 2790.51 m. (2) According to the NSD and CMD data of each part, the long-term movement direction of the channel centerline is basically the same, and a small part of the channel centerline has periodic reverse swing. The probability of channel centerline moving right is about twice that of moving left. At the same time, some rivers have high erosion risk. (3) Through MRCC and LRCR data, the total number of channel centerline moving left and right is 156 and 329, respectively, and the erosion risk level of the near half of the shoreline is high. (4) The change of river boundary conditions and hydrodynamic force will affect the migration rate and direction of channel centerline. (5) This study proposes a method to extract channel centerline from a braided reach and study its changes, which can be applied to other similar reaches with a long history of human activities and high density. The results enrich people’s understanding of the long-term changes of a braided reach in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and have certain guiding significance for river regulation, navigation safety, and revetment construction.

As an important step enhancing regional innovation, researches on collaborative innovation have attracted much more attention recently. One significant reason is that cities can get excessive benefits while they take collaborative innovation activities. Based on the theories of innovation geography, this paper takes the collaborative innovation of the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) Urban Agglomeration as a case study and measures the collaborative innovation capacity from innovation actors and innovation cities by adopting the catastrophe progression model. Then on this basis, the study depicts the spatial pattern and the benefit allocation of collaborative innovation by using the coupling collaborative degree model and benefit allocation model of collaborative innovation. The results show that: 1) The collaborative innovation capacity of cities in the Yangtze River Delta has strengthened largely, while the capacity still is not high enough. Cities with high collaborative innovation capacity are concentrated in Shanghai, the southern part of Jiangsu, and Hangzhou Bay, yet the cooperation of the universities-industries-research institutes need to improve. 2) The spatial pattern of collaborative innovation of the Yangtze River Delta presents several innovation circles, which are in Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou Metropolitan Circle, Nanjing Metropolitan Circle, Hangzhou Metropolitan Circle, Ningbo Metropolitan Circle, and Hefei Metropolitan Circle. Shanghai plays the role of the central city of collaborative innovation, while Suzhou, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Ningbo, and Hefei act as sub-central cities. 3) The benefit each city allocated from collaborative innovation activities has increased. However, the allocations of the benefit show that cities with higher innovation capacity have significant advantages in most cases, which lead to serious disparities in space.

Land use change is one of the key elements leading to carbon emission changes, and is of great significance to the process of achieving the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. In this study, we calculated the land-use carbon emissions (LCE) in the Guanzhong area (GZA) of Shaanxi province from 2000 to 2019 by using an improved LCE measurement model. Meanwhile, the spatial and temporal changes of LCE were analyzed and the driving forces were investigated based on the correlation analysis and multi-scale geographical weighting regression (MGWR). The results showed that the total amount of LCE showed a significant increasing trend from 2000 to 2019. Regions where the LCE significantly increased occupied 71.20% of the total area; these regions were distributed in the central and eastern parts of the study area. The LCE showed a significant positive spatial correlation and had a remarkable aggregation state. The H-H agglomeration area of LCE was distributed in the central urban agglomeration. The L-L agglomeration areas were always distributed in the southwest part of the GZA with low carbon emissions. The average correlation coefficients between LCE and nighttime light (NTL), population density (PD), and gross primary productivity (GPP) were 0.13, 0.21, and −0.05, respectively. The NLT and PD had obvious positive effects on LCE, while GPP has obvious negative effects on carbon emissions, which can be ascribed to the carbon sink effect of forests and grasslands. The results of this study have important reference value regarding the formulation of carbon emission reduction policies and the development of a low-carbon social economy.

In this paper, a simple, efficient and commercial available approach for recycle and reutilization of silicon cutting waste(SCW) to prepare high purity SiC is proposed, and the thermodynamic characterization of the SiC preparation and its growth mechanism are investigated. The effects of thermodynamic temperature, Si/C ratio and system pressure on the influence of recovering SCW are studied in detail with HSC 6.0 software. SiC balanced amount was about 1.7 mol/100 g and its content reached 66%, when the temperature reached 1880 °C. A decrease of Si/C ratio in the range of 1/1–1/4 will contribute to a decrease of smelting temperature, and the ordinary pressure of 1 bar is considered as the optimum pressure for the synthesis of SiC.

Purpose To determine the genetic characteristics of the Chinese epidemic ST5-SCCmec II-t311 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clone and to investigate the transmission characteristics of the cfr-positive plasmid. Methods The complete genome of SR153 was sequenced. Genomic comparison with MRSA strains of other lineages was performed. The cfr-positive plasmid was investigated and compared with other cfr-positive plasmids from different origins and different areas. Results The cfr-positive MRSA strain SR153 was a Chinese epidemic ST5-SCCmec II-t311 strain. It clustered much closer to the Japanese ST5-SCCmec II clone than to the European and American ST5-SCCmec II clones. The genome of SR153 contains one circular chromosome and three plasmids. It harbors the genomic islands νSaα, νSaβ, νSaγ, ΦSa1 and ΦSa3, the pathogenicity island νSa4, and genes encoding virulence factors such as tst and many enterotoxins. The SR153 genome also contains several resistance genes and mutations, such as ermA, aadD, spc, aacA-aphD, lnuA, tetK, blaZ and mutations in grlA and gyrA. SR153 harbors a cfr-positive plasmid, pSR01, which is highly similar to pSX01 from a Staphylococcus xylosus of pig origin from Henan Province. pSR01 was also highly similar to pXWZ from a Staphylococcus capitis and pLRSA417 from S. aureus. Both were obtained from geographically separated hospitals in Zhejiang Province. Conclusions SR153, which clustered closely to the Japanese ST5-SCCmec II clone, is more resistant than N315. A pSR01-like cfr-positive plasmid was widespread among different Staphylococcus species of both human and animal origin in different hospitals and areas.

Solar grade silicon slicing wastes (SoG-Siw) are the byproducts of the photovoltaic industry, which are the precious sources of SiC particles and high-purity silicon. Herein, we report a low-cost and facile approach to recover the SiC particles by the methods of physical sedimentation and chemical technique. The effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, acid concentration, stirring speed and liquid-solid ratio on the purity of SiC were discussed in details. The results indicated that the optimal reaction conditions were as follows: mixed acid solution of 5 wt% HF and 8 wt% HNO3, reaction time of 2 h, temperature of 60 °C and liquid-solid ratio of 5:2. SiC particles with the purity of 98.54 wt% with grain sizes of 1.2 ~ 11.4 μm were obtained, which could match the standards of SiC abrasives. It is promising that the current work could provide a low-cost and facile method for recycling SiC particles from SoG-Siw, which could also reduce the cost for solar cells and facilitate the recycling of high-purity silicon from SoG-Siw.

Background Bacteria-mediated cancer immunotherapy (BCI) robustly stimulates the immune system and represses angiogenesis, but tumor recurrence and metastasis commonly occur after BCI. The natural product Ilex kudingcha C.J Tseng enriched with ursolic acid has anti-cancer activity and could potentially augment the therapeutic effects of BCI. The objective of the present study was to determine potential additive effects of these modalities. Methods We investigated the anti-cancer activity of KDCE (Kudingcha extractive) combined with S.t△ppGpp in the mice colon cancer models. Results In the present study, KDCE combined with S.t△ppGpp BCI improved antitumor therapeutic efficacy compared to S.t△ppGpp or KDCE alone. KDCE did not prolong bacterial tumor-colonizing time, but enhanced the antiangiogenic effect of S.t△ppGpp by downregulatingVEGFR2. Conclusions Combination therapy with S.t△ppGpp and KDCE is a potential cancer therapeutic strategy.

The emergence of daptomycin-resistant (DAP-R) Staphylococcus aureus strains has become a global problem. Point mutations in mprF are the main cause of daptomycin (DAP) treatment failure. However, the impact of these specific point-mutations in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains associated with DAP resistance and the "see-saw effect" of distinct beta-lactams remains unclear. In this study, we used three series of clinical MRSA strains with three distinct mutated mprF alleles from clone complexes (CC) 5 and 59 to explore the "see-saw effect" and the combination effect of DAP plus beta-lactams. Through construction of mprF deletion and complementation strains of SA268, we determined that mprF-S295A, mprF-S337L and one novel mutation of mprF-I348del within the bifunctional domain lead to DAP resistance. Compared with wild-type mprF cloned from a DAP-susceptible (DAP-S) strain, these three mprF mutations conferred the "see-saw effect" to distinct beta-lactams in the SA268ΔmprF strains and mutated-mprF (I348del and S337L) did not alter the cell surface positive charge (P > 0.05). The susceptibility to beta-lactams increased significantly in DAP-R CC59 strains and the "see-saw effect" was found to be associated with distinct mutated mprF alleles and the category of beta-lactams. The synergistic activity of DAP plus oxacillin was detected in all DAP-R MRSA strains. Continued progress in understanding the mechanism of restoring susceptibility to beta-lactam antibiotics mediated by the mprF mutation and its impact on beta-lactam combination therapy will provide fundamental insights into treatment of MRSA infections.

In this study, we evaluated the ceftobiprole (BPR) susceptibilities of 472 methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates, and investigated the mechanisms underlying BPR resistance.For all MRSA isolates, BPR MIC was determined by agar dilution. We sequenced the BPR-resistant isolates through Illumina short- and MinION long-read sequencing. We also selected MRSA isolates of ST5, ST59, and ST239, and exposed them to increasing BRP concentrations. The isolated mutants developing BPR resistance were sequenced.A total of 471 MRSA isolates were susceptible to BPR, with MICs ranging from 0.25 to 2 mg/L. Compared with HA-MRSA isolates (MICBPR showed significant antibacterial activity against MRSA isolates in China; however, the emergence of a BPR-resistant isolate before its launch was a cause for concern. Multiple genes and pathways are potentially involved in the development of BPR resistance in MRSA, and our data demonstrated the role of nanopore-sequencing in revealing the tandem repeat-mediated resistance mechanism in MRSA.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acids (HFPO-DA) and hexafluoropropylene oxide trimer acids (HFPO-TA) are alternatives to perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). However, little information on the comparison of their toxicities is available. Here, zebrafish embryos were exposed to PFOA, HFPO-DA, and HFPO-TA with exposure concentrations of 5 and 500 μg/L. Behavioral abnormal, enzyme activities and gene expression profiles in zebrafish embryos were determined. Results showed that exposure to PFOA and its alternatives increased heart rates and inhibited locomotor activity of zebrafish embryos. Further, their exposures changed the enzyme activities (acetylcholinesterase and oxidative stress-related enzymes), ATP content, and expressions of genes related to hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, apoptosis, and lipid metabolism. Comparison analyses found that PFOA, HFPO-TA, and HFPO-DA exposures induced different effects on the embryonic development of zebrafish, which indicates the different modes of action. The HFPO-DA exposure induced specific effects on the disorder of lipid metabolism, HPT axis, and neurodevelopment. The HFPO-TA exposure also induced different effects from the PFOA exposure, which focused on lipid metabolism. The current data shows that the HFPO-DA and HFPO-TA might not be safe alternatives to PFOA. This study provides a new understanding of the biological hazards of PFOA alternatives in aquatic organisms, which can guide their usage.

The Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration (CUA) faces considerable air quality concerns, although the situation has improved in the past 15 years. The driving effects of population, land and economic urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations in the CUA have largely been overlooked in previous studies. The contributions of natural and socio-economic factors to PM2.5 concentrations have been ignored and the spillover effects of multi-dimensional urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations have been underestimated. This study explores the spatial dependence and trend evolution of PM2.5 concentrations in the CUA at the grid and county level, analyzing the direct and spillover effects of multi-dimensional urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations. The results show that the mean PM2.5 concentrations in CUA dropped to 48.05 μg/m3 at an average annual rate of 4.6% from 2000 to 2015, however, in 2015, there were still 91% of areas exposed to pollution risk (&gt, 35 μg/m3). The PM2.5 concentrations in 92.98% of the area have slowly decreased but are rising in some areas, such as Shimian County, Xuyong County and Gulin County. The PM2.5 concentrations in this region presented a spatial dependence pattern of “cold spots in the east and hot spots in the west”. Urbanization was not the only factor contributing to PM2.5 concentrations. Commercial trade, building development and atmospheric pressure were found to have significant contributions. The spillover effect of multi-dimensional urbanization was found to be generally stronger than the direct effects and the positive impact of land urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations was stronger than population and economic urbanization. The findings provide support for urban agglomerations such as CUA that are still being cultivated to carry out cross-city joint control strategies of PM2.5 concentrations, also proving that PM2.5 pollution control should not only focus on urban socio-economic development strategies but should be an integration of work optimization in various areas such as population agglomeration, land expansion, economic construction, natural adaptation and socio-economic adjustment.

Treatment failure of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections remains problematic in clinical practice because therapeutic options are limited. Penicillin plus potassium clavulanate combination (PENC) was shown to have potential for treating some MRSA infections. We investigated the susceptibility of MRSA isolates and constructed a drug susceptibility prediction model for the phenotype of the PENC. We determined the minimum inhibitory concentration of PENC for MRSA (n=284) in a teaching hospital (SRRSH-MRSA). PENC susceptibility genotypes were analysed using a published genotyping scheme based on the mecA sequence. mecA expression in MRSA isolates was analysed by qPCR. We established a random forest model for predicting PENC-susceptible phenotypes using core genome allelic profiles from cgMLST analysis. We identified S2-R isolates with susceptible mecA genotypes but PENC-resistant phenotypes; these isolates expressed mecA at higher levels than did S2 MRSA (2.61 vs 0.98, Pn=74) and MRSA collected in a previous national survey (NA-MRSA, n=471) as a training set, we built a model with accuracies of 0.94 and 0.93 for SRRSH-MRSA and UK-sourced MRSA (n=287, NAM-MRSA) validation sets. The AUROC of this model for SRRSH-MRSA and NAM-MRSA was 0.96 and 0.97. Although the source of the training set data affects the scope of application of the prediction model, our data demonstrated the power of the machine learning approach in predicting susceptibility from cgMLST results.

Africa’s PM2.5 pollution has become a security hazard, but the understanding of the varying effects of urbanization on driven mechanisms of PM2.5 concentrations under the rapid urbanization remains largely insufficient. Compared with the direct impact, the spillover effect of urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations in adjacent regions was underestimated. Urbanization is highly multi-dimensional phenomenon and previous studies have rarely distinguished the different driving influence and interactions of multi-dimensional urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations in Africa. This study combined grid and administrative units to explore the spatio-temporal change, spatial dependence patterns, and evolution trend of PM2.5 concentrations and multi-dimensional urbanization in Africa. The differential influence and interaction effects of multi-dimensional urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations under Africa’s rapid urbanization was further analyzed. The results show that the positive spatial dependence of PM2.5 concentrations gradually increased over the study period 2000–2018. The areas with PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 35 μg/m3 increased by 2.2%, and 36.78% of the African continent had an increasing trend in Theil–Sen index. Urbanization was found to be the main driving factor causing PM2.5 concentrations changes, and economic urbanization had a stronger influence on air quality than land urbanization or population urbanization. Compared with the direct effect, the spillover effect of urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations in two adjacent regions was stronger, particularly in terms of economic urbanization. The spatial distribution of PM2.5 concentrations resulted from the interaction of multi-dimensional urbanization. The interaction of urbanization of any two different dimensions exhibited a nonlinear enhancement effect on PM2.5 concentrations. Given the differential impact of multi-dimensional urbanization on PM2.5 concentrations inside and outside the region, this research provides support for the cross-regional joint control strategies of air pollution in Africa. The findings also indicate that PM2.5 pollution control should not only focus on urban economic development strategies but should be an optimized integration of multiple mitigation strategies, such as improving residents’ lifestyles, optimizing land spatial structure, and upgrading the industrial structure.

Africa has been undergoing a rapid urbanization process, which is critical to the achievement of the 11th Sustainable Development Goal (SDG11). Using population density data from LandScan, we proposed a population density-based thresholding method to generate urban land and urban population data in Africa from 2001 to 2019, which were further applied to detect the spatiotemporal characteristics of Africa’s urbanization. The results showed that urban land and urban population have both grown rapidly in Africa, which increased by about 5.92% and 4.91%, respectively. The top three countries with the most intense urbanization process in Africa are Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Ethiopia. The coupling relationship index of urban land expansion and population growth was 0.76 in Africa during 2001–2019. Meanwhile, the total proportion of uncoordinated development types at the provincial level was getting higher, which indicated an uncoordinated relationship between urban land expansion and population growth in Africa. Cropland, grassland, rural land, and forests were the most land-use types occupied by urban expansion. The proportion of cropland, grassland, and forests occupied was getting higher and higher from 2001 to 2019. The extensive urban land use may have an impact on the environmental and economic benefits brought by urbanization, which needs further research.

H9N2 avian influenza has been prevalent in chicken flocks of China for years. In the first half year of 2018, clinical cases of suspected H9N2 infection were collected from chicken flocks in Shandong province. Nine strains of H9N2 influenza virus were isolated. The pathological changes of the dead chickens were mainly respiratory inflammation, renal swelling, and secondary infection. The microscopic lesions were consistent with the pathogenic characteristics of H9N2 influenza virus. From November 2017 to June 2018, a total of 3,380 serum samples were randomly collected from commercial laying hens in Shandong Province. The H9 antibody levels were tested with the isolated strain (CK/SD/231/17) as the antigen. It showed that the average of antibody titers of H9 avian influenza was 9.24 1og2. Hemagglutination inhibition experiments were conducted on chicken serum with the vaccine virus and the isolated virus (CK/SD/231/17) as the antigens. It was found that the antibody titer measured with the vaccine virus was 1 or 2 titers higher than the isolated strain. It indicated that the antigenicity of H9N2 circulating strain was different from that of vaccine strain. The nucleotide sequences of HA gene of these recent H9N2 avian influenza virus isolates shared homologies from 93.8 to 99.9%. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the eight gene segments of the viruses were in the same clades with G57 gene reference strain. The amino acid site analysis of influenza resistance showed that the virus was sensitive to neuraminidase inhibitors and resistant to amantadine. Highlights: The protection rate of the H9N2 AIV vaccine almost reached 100% before 2016, but the antibody level of serum samples showed high diversity in this study, which means the poultry were infected. The antigenicity of isolated H9N2 strains was different from that of vaccine strain. Current available vaccines may provide only limited protection.

The metallurgical route is a prospective method to replace the Siemens process to produce silicon for solar cells. However, the imperfect removal efficiencies of boron (B) and phosphorus (P) from silicon are the major issue. Herein, we report a novel approach to produce high-purity silicon for solar cells by the reaction of SiC with SiO2 and pure FeO (with low B and P) in vacuum, which first forms Si-Fe alloy and is followed by milling and acid leaching. Pure FeO can not only reduce the silicon formation temperature but also provide an abundance of pure iron elements that serve as an impurities getter to capture B and P during the formation of silicon. Compared with the traditional metallurgical methods, this work could remove B and P from silicon directly during the formation of silicon. The refining ratios of B and P from the raw materials to the Fe-Si alloy were about 71.05% and 93.49%. Characterizations of the Si-Fe alloy indicate that many defects exist in the FeSi2 phase of the milled Si-Fe alloy, which is convenient for the elimination of Fe, B and P by acid leaching. Final silicon had a purity of 99.99 wt.% with 0.04 ppmw B and 0.07 ppmw P, which had met the requirement of B and P for solar cells (B ≤ 0.15 ppmw, P ≤ 0.35 ppmw). This strategy significantly decreased energy consumption and shortened production process of high-purity silicon and is thus an effective and scalable approach for the production of silicon for solar cells. Silicon powder waste (SPW) from diamond-wire saw cutting process has a very low content of boron and phosphorus. Therefore, it is a promising and precious raw material for producing SoG-Si. The SPW also contains iron impurities which were from the worn of cutting wire during the silicon wafer producing process. Since the presence of iron will affect the quality of the silicon products, it is essential to remove the iron from SPW. In this paper, the removal of iron from SPW by acid leaching was researched and its kinetics were investigated by the heterogeneous and homogeneous reaction methods. Diluted sulfuric acid was selected as the leaching agent. The leaching parameters were optimized, i.e., temperature 60 °C, acid concentration 12%, liquid-solid ratio 10 mL/g and stirring speed 200 rpm. Under the optimized conditions, the removal rate of iron could reach 94.34%. It was found that the iron removing process can be divided into two stages. In both of the stages, the leaching process was controlled by second order rate of homogeneous reaction model, and the activation energy are 10.78 kJ/mol and 35.97 kJ/mol, respectively.

A novel way to produce the silicon nitride using cheaper silicon kerf loss instead of expensive pure silicon as a raw material has been studied through thermodynamic analysis and Gibbs free energy minimization method. The mass fraction of Si3N4 in products increases with increasing the temperature at atmospheric pressure with mole ratio of carbon to oxygen of 1:1. More content of carbon added in silicon kerf loss, the less content of Si2N2O and the more content of SiC formed in the product. In addition, the pressure parameter obviously influences the composition of nitridation products, which can be attributed to lots of gas-phase reactions existing in the nitridation process. With the pressure increased, the mass fraction of Si3N4 decreases below 1500 °C, while it increases above 1500 °C. In conclusion, the optimal products contain Si3N4 of 95.6 mass%, Si2N2O of 1.7 mass% and SiC of 2.7 mass%, which formed at 1032 °C and 1 × 10−5 bar with mole ratio of carbon to oxygen of 1:3.

To investigate the effect of the Si3N4 diluent on the direct nitridation of silicon powder, the direct nitridation of silicon powder doped with different contents of α-Si3N4 and β-Si3N4 diluents was studied in detail. The phase constituent and microstructure of the products were detected using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the weight changes and heat flow changes in the samples in the heating-up stage were investigated using thermogravimetric and differential scanning calorimetry. The results revealed that both the α-Si3N4 diluent and the β-Si3N4 diluent can accelerate the nitridation by decreasing the oxygen content in silicon powder. It was also revealed that both the α-Si3N4 diluent and the β-Si3N4 diluent can promote the formation of α-Si3N4 by decreasing the extensive-nitridation temperature. The determination of the relationship between heat and temperature changes revealed that when an identical amount of silicon and Si3N4 absorb an equal amount of heat, the temperature increment of the former is approximately 5.8 times that of the latter. Thus, the α-Si3N4 diluent and the β-Si3N4 diluent mainly function as heat accepters in the direct nitridation of silicon powder. They can absorb the additional heat released from the reaction between silicon and nitrogen and thus hinder the formation of the liquid phase in the nitridation process, thereby inhibiting the formation of an agglomerate phase and short needle-like Si3N4 as products.
