With the increasing use of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) technology in the field of forest ecology, a large number of studies have been carried out on the separation of wood and leaves based on TLS point cloud data. However, most wood–leaf separation methods adopt the point-wise classification strategy, which is not efficient for processing large-volume TLS datasets acquired at the forest plot level. In this study, we proposed a segment-wise classification strategy to improve the efficiency of the wood–leaf separation from large-volume TLS point cloud datasets collected at the forest plot. The proposed method first decomposes the point cloud into three parts based on the threshold values of its local curvature. Then, the first two parts with lower local curvatures were segmented respectively by a connected component labelling algorithm. Finally, the segmented point clouds were classified into wood or leaf segments according to the segment-wise geometric features of each segment. We tested our method on both needleleaf and broadleaf forest plots in temperate and tropical forests. We also compared our method with two other state-of-the-art wood–leaf separation methods, that is, the CANUPO and LeWoS. The results showed that our method was more than 10 times faster than the compared methods while maintaining comparable and even higher accuracy. Our study demonstrates that the segment-wise classification strategy applies to the large-volume TLS datasets and can greatly improve the efficiency of the classification. The proposed method is simple, fast and universally applicable to the TLS data from various tree species and forest types at the plot level, which may facilitate the adoption of TLS technology by forest ecologists in their studies.

Gallic acid (GA), a phenol that is present in various plants, potentially contains antioxidant properties. This study aimed to investigate the effects of GA on the reproduction of adolescent male Brandt’s voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii (Radde, 1861)). Antioxidant levels and apoptosis in the testis, as well as reproductive physiology, were evaluated in adolescent males treated with GA. The results showed that a low dose of GA enhanced relative epididymis mass and the sperm density in the epididymis, increased the mRNA levels of steroidogenic acute regulatory protein in the testis, and reduced the percentages of abnormal and dead sperm. In addition, a low dose of GA significantly increased the levels of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase, and decreased the level of malondialdehyde in the testis, as well as the mRNA and protein levels of the apoptosis-related gene, caspase-3. However, a high dose of GA sharply reduced the mean diameter of the seminiferous tubules compared with a low dose. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that GA treatment during puberty affects the reproductive responses of male Brandt’s voles in a dose-dependent manner by regulating antioxidant levels and apoptosis.

The internal pressure characteristics of an oil-injected twin-screw refrigeration compressor was studied using a full 3D CFX model, and the hexahedral moveable meshes of the twin-screw domain were generated by the professional mesh tool SCORG. The gas pressure throughout the whole working process was investigated to disclose its distribution feature. The working pressure at different locations, such as the inner surface of the screw rotor housing, the oil injection paths, the male screw groove, the internal suction and discharge flowing paths, were all captured and analyzed. The simulated pressure inside the screw working chamber agreed well with the experimental results in both time and frequency domains. The pressure pulsations in the compression section acting on the inner surface of the screw rotor housing presented higher levels than the data in the other domains. The highest pulsation level occurred on the location where could record the whole discharge process of the internal ports. Under the high oil flowrate conditions, due to the different influences of the fluid hammer effect, the pressure pulsation increment of the axial oil injection outlet was much larger than that of the radial oil injection outlet. The orifice on the oil path could help reduce the influence of the fluid hammer. Finally, several suggestions were given based on the simulation findings.

Introduction: Stress during adolescence causes long-term behavioral changes in adulthood. We previously found that adolescent exposure to predatory risk augments adolescent social contact and adult parental behavior in Brandt’s voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii). Methods: Here, we determined whether this experience alters sexual behavior, pair-bond formation, and recognition ability as well as basal HPA axis activity, central oxytocin (OT), and arginine-vasopressin (AVP) expression in adulthood. Results: In the social interaction test, repeated cat odor (CO) exposure enhanced the frequency of lordosis by female voles toward an unfamiliar opposite-sex conspecific. CO voles preferred to engage with their partners after 48-h cohabitation whereas the control groups did not, which may reflect stable pair bonds in the CO treatment group. Furthermore, adolescent exposure to CO inhibited novel object recognition and place recognition ability, while it influenced social recognition only among adult males. No effect of adolescent CO exposure was observed for basal HPA axis activity, showing a habituation effect. Finally, we found that CO exposure increased OT and decreased AVP expression in the hypothalamus, including the paraventricular nucleus and anterior hypothalamus. The levels of OT in the medial amygdala were lower, and AVP in the lateral septum was higher in CO voles compared with the control. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that adolescent exposure to predator risk promotes adult reproductive behavior of Brandt’s voles. Deficits in recognition ability may necessitate alterations in reproductive strategies to enhance inclusive fitness. OT and AVP systems may play a modulatory role in the alteration of social behaviors elicited by adolescent predatory risk.

It is well known that tannins can influence the reproduction of animals, but there is little research published to elucidate the mechanics of this phenomenon. The purpose of this study was to investigate the role of antioxidation in the influence of tannic acid on the ovarian development of Brandt's voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii), which is a species of prairie animal that feeds on plants containing tannins. Postnatal 4-week-old female Brandt's voles were treated with 0 (control), 0.3% (low dose), or 0.6% (high dose) tannic acid for 4 or 9 weeks (i.e., when they reached puberty [8 weeks] or sexual maturity [13 weeks], respectively). The results showed that in both adolescent and adult Brandt's voles, firstly, treatment with tannic acid produced a higher ovary coefficient (ratio of the weight of ovaries to body weight), a greater proportion of mature follicles, and an increased follicular diameter. Secondly, tannic acid increased the serum contents of luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, and serum estradiol. Thirdly, tannic acid elevated the levels of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase) and reduced the level of malondialdehyde. Therefore, it is suggested that tannic acid may promote the ovarian development of female Brant's voles by enhancing their antioxidant capacity.

In the present paper, the characteristic behaviors of the sheath in an unmagnetized dusty plasma that contained trapped electrons, cold ions, and variable-charged dusts are investigated, based on the Sagdeev potential approach. The result shows that both the formation and structure of the sheath are modified by the trapped electrons. At the sheath edge, the critical ion Mach number decreases as the trapping parameter β increases. It is noted that the effect of electron trapping on the ion-entering-sheath-velocity is indirect, and closely related to the dust charge variation. In the sheath, the increased β leads to the enlargement of the sheath thickness and the absolute value of electrostatic potential, which results in the redistribution of particle densities. Moreover, the results of the Maxwellian case are essentially recovered when β = 1. As expected, the present results can give more insight into the interaction processes that happened on the plasma-wall interface.

Tannins are polyphenols that are present in various plants, and potentially contain antioxidant properties that promote reproduction in animals. This study investigated how tannic acid (TA) affects the reproductive parameters of male Brandt’s voles,Lasiopodomys brandtii(Radde, 1861). Specifically, the anti-oxidative level of serum, autophagy in the testis, and reproductive physiology were assessed in males treated with TA from the pubertal stage. Compared to the control, low dose TA enhanced relative testis and epididymis weight and sperm concentration in the epididymis, and significantly increased the level of serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px). mRNA levels of autophagy related genes LC3 and Beclin1 decreased significantly with low dose TA compared to the control. However, compared to the control, high dose TA sharply reduced the levels of serum SOD, GSH-Px, CAT, serum testosterone (T), and mRNA level in steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) in the testis. Both sperm abnormality and mortality increased with high dose TA compared to the control and low dose TA. Collectively, this study demonstrated that TA treatment during puberty had a dose-dependent effect on the reproductive responses of male Brandt’s voles. TA might mediate autophagy in the testis, through both indirect and direct processes. TA mainly affected the reproductive function of male Brandt’s voles by regulating anti-oxidative levels. This study advances our understanding of the mechanisms by which tannins influence reproduction in herbivores.

An experimental investigation on pressure pulsations of twin-screw refrigeration compressor was conducted. The pressure pulsation energy at different radial locations on the screw housing, inside the discharge chamber, and the energy transmitting to downstream components during the working process were all tested. Various oil parameters have been investigated to disclose its influence on the pressure pulsation energy of twin-screw refrigeration compressors. With the total oil flow rate increasing, pressure pulsation was found attenuating above the 1st order of pumping frequency, while the amplitude reduction was found depended on the oil injection locations and oil distributions obviously. The final compression pressure inside the screw lobe cavity before the internal discharge port opening was found to be much lower than the expected value based on the built-in radial Vi, and the pressure continued increasing until the axial port opening around 5.45°. Several suggestions about design for lower pressure pulsations were recommended based on test findings.

Objective. To investigate the efficacy of gamma globulin combined with azithromycin sequential therapy in the treatment of children with refractory mycoplasma pneumonia and its effect on Th1/Th2 cytokine levels. Method. From January 2021 to January 2022, 100 children diagnosed with refractory mycoplasma pneumonia were randomly divided into 2 groups (50 cases in each one), the control group was treated with azithromycin plus comprehensive basic treatment, and the treatment group was treated with combined treatment on the basis of the control group, gamma globulin therapy; the treatment effect and cytokine levels of the two groups were compared. Results. Th1, Th2, and Th1/Th2 before treatment were not significantly different between the two groups. Th1, Th2, and Th1/Th2 in the treatment group were significantly downregulated compared with those in the control group after treatment. The levels of IgG, IgA, and IgM in the treatment group were not significantly different from those in the control group before treatment but were significantly upregulated after treatment. IL-10, IL-6, and IL-2 levels were also significantly increased in the treatment group. The disappearance time of clinical symptoms such as fever, cough, and pulmonary rales in the treatment group was significantly shorter than that in the control group, and the cure rate in the treatment group was significantly better than that in the control group. Conclusion. The clinical effect of gamma globulin combined with azithromycin sequential therapy in the treatment of children with refractory mycoplasma pneumonia is remarkable, which can reduce inflammatory factors, improve patients’ immunity, and promote disease recovery.

Preeclampsia (PE) is a complex complication that occurs during pregnancy. Studies indicated that morbidity from PE exhibits marked variations among geographical areas. Disparities in the incidence of PE between China and the US may be due to differences in ethnicity and genetic susceptibility, maternal age, sexual culture, body mass index, diet, exercise, multiple pregnancies and educational background. These epidemiological differences may give rise to differences between the two countries in terms of diagnostic and therapeutic criteria for PE. PE may be largely attributed to susceptibility genes and lifestyles, such as diet, body mass index and cultural norms regarding sexual relationships. The epidemiologic differences of patients with PE between the two countries indicated that appropriate prevention plans for PE require to be developed according to local conditions.

Due to complicated noise interference, seismic signals of high arch dam are of nonstationarity and a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) during acquisition process. The traditional denoising method may have filtered effective seismic signals of high arch dams. A self-adaptive denoising method based on ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) combining wavelet threshold with singular spectrum analysis (SSA) is proposed in this paper. Based on the EEMD result for seismic signals of high arch dams, a continuous mean square error criterion is used to distinguish high-frequency and low-frequency components of the intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Denoised high-frequency IMF using wavelet threshold is reconstructed with low-frequency components, and SSA is implemented for the reconstructed signal. Simulation signal denoising analysis indicates that the proposed method can significantly reduce mean square error under low SNR condition, and the overall denoising effect is superior to EEMD and EEMD-Wavelet threshold denoising algorithms. Denoising analysis of measured seismic signals of high arch dams shows that the performance of denoised seismic signals using EEMD-Wavelet-SSA is obviously improved, and natural frequencies of the high arch dams can be effectively identified.

GABAergic neurotransmission constitutes a major inhibitory signaling mechanism that plays crucial roles in central nervous system physiology and immune cell immunomodulation. However, its roles in innate immunity remain unclear. Here, we report that deficiency in the GABAergic neuromuscular junctions (NMJs) of Caenorhabditis elegans results in enhanced resistance to pathogens, whereas pathogen infection enhances the strength of GABAergic transmission. GABAergic synapses control innate immunity in a manner dependent on the FOXO/DAF-16 but not the p38/PMK-1 pathway. Our data reveal that the insulin-like peptide INS-31 level was dramatically decreased in the GABAergic NMJ GABA(A)R-deficient unc-49 mutant compared with wild-type animals. C. elegans with ins-31 knockdown or loss of function exhibited enhanced resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 exposure. INS-31 may act downstream of GABAergic NMJs and in body wall muscle to control intestinal innate immunity in a cell-nonautonomous manner. Our results reveal a signaling axis of synapse–muscular insulin–intestinal innate immunity in vivo.

American foulbrood (AFB) disease and chalkbrood disease (CBD) are important bacterial and fungal diseases, respectively, that affect honeybee broods. Exposure to agrochemicals is an abiotic stressor that potentially weakens honeybee colonies. Gut microflora alterations in adult honeybees associated with these biotic and abiotic factors have been investigated. However, microbial compositions in AFB- and CBD-infected larvae and the profile of whole-body microbiota in foraging bees exposed to agrochemicals have not been fully studied. In this study, bacterial and fungal communities in healthy and diseased (AFB/CBD) honeybee larvae were characterized by amplicon sequencing of bacterial 16S rRNA gene and fungal internal transcribed spacer1 region, respectively. The bacterial and fungal communities in disordered foraging bees poisoned by agrochemicals were analysed. Our results revealed that healthy larvae were significantly enriched in bacterial genera Lactobacillus and Stenotrophomonas and the fungal genera Alternaria and Aspergillus . The enrichment of these microorganisms, which had antagonistic activities against the etiologic agents for AFB and CBD, respectively, may protect larvae from potential infection. In disordered foraging bees, the relative abundance of bacterial genus Gilliamella and fungal species Cystofilobasidium macerans were significantly reduced, which may compromise hosts' capacities in nutrient absorption and immune defence against pathogens. Significantly higher frequency of environmentally derived fungi was observed in disordered foraging bees, which reflected the perturbed microbiota communities of hosts. Results from PICRUSt and FUNGuild analyses revealed significant differences in gene clusters of bacterial communities and fungal function profiles. Overall, results of this study provide references for the composition and function of microbial communities in AFB- and CBD-infected honeybee larvae and foraging bees exposed to agrochemicals.

This study aimed to investigate the protective effects of three propolis-abundant flavonoids, pinocembrin (PI), galangin (GA), and chrysin (CH) against ethanol-induced injuries in HepG2 cells. Results showed that the pre-treatment of flavonoids could significantly reverse cellular injuries caused by ethanol, which was evidenced by the decreased production of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, less DNA damages, and the increased antioxidant status. Results from RNA-Seq revealed that differentially expressed genes in response to the pre-treatment of PI, GA, and CH were significantly enriched in different biological processes. Three flavonoids could significantly suppress ERK1/2 phosphorylation, AHR nuclear translocation, and CYP1A1 expression. In summary, three flavonoids had significant protective effects on ethanol-induced injuries through the inhibition of the ERK1/2-AHR-CYP1A1 signaling pathway. Our results provided theoretical bases for the promising use of PI, GA and CH in the prevention and treatment of ethanol-induced fatty liver diseases.

Background: Anoctamin-1 (ANO1) plays a pivotal role in cancer progression. A meta-analysis was conducted to assess the potential prognostic role of ANO1 in cancers. Methods: A total of 1760 patients from 7 eligible studies were included into the analysis. Pooled hazard ratios or odds ratios were extracted and calculated with a random-effects model, and analyses of heterogeneity bias were conducted. Results: Our results showed that over expression of ANO1 was significantly correlated with poor overall survival in all cancers (HR = 1.52; 95% CI: 1.19–1.92; P = .0006). Subgroup analysis indicated that there was a significant association between over expression of ANO1 and poor prognosis breast cancer (HR = 3.24; 95% CI: 1.74–6.04), head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HR = 1.14; 95% CI: 1.00–1.30), esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (HR = 1.93; 95% CI: 1.07–3.50), gastric cancer (HR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.12–2.34) and colorectal cancer (HR = 1.38; 95% CI: 1.03–1.85). In addition, over expression of ANO1 was not associated with TNM stage, histological grade, lymph node metastasis, tumor size, age and gender. However, ANO1 was significantly associated with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2, but not associated with progesterone receptor or estrogen receptor in breast cancer. Conclusions: Our results indicate that ANO1 can be a predictive factor for prognosis of cancer.

Background: Detailed and accurate information about tree crown structures is crucial for researching tree physiology. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is a promising technique for retrieving crown structure parameters but still faces bottlenecks in terms of data processing such as wood-leaf separation. Currently, most wood-leaf separation methods use pointwise and supervised classification strategies at the forest plot level, which is very time consuming for large-volume TLS datasets.Methods: In this study, we proposed a novel classification method to separate wood and leaf points based on connected component segmentation and segmentwise classification by geometric features. We tested the proposed method on both needleleaf and broadleaf forest plots and compared the results to those from a widely used pointwise classification method, CANUPO.Results: The results showed that the proposed segmentwise classification method is superior to CANUPO in terms of both classification accuracy and time efficiency, which were improved by 1.5 times and over 10 times, respectively.Conclusions: This study indicated that the segmentwise classification strategy is applicable to dense TLS data and can enhance the accuracy and efficiency of wood-leaf separation, which can in turn facilitate the retrieval of crown structure parameters.

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the diagnostic role of CRP in ovarian cancer and to assess whether CRP can be combined with tumor markers to enhance the diagnostic efficacy toward ovarian cancer. Area under the curve, sensitivity, and specificity were calculated to access the diagnostic ability of each singly and combined as markers for ovarian cancer. The CRP cut-off value was then calculated to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of CRP for ovarian cancer. Our results showed that values for all markers were significantly higher in the cancer group than in the control group. Receiver operating characteristic curve results showed that CA125 had the highest diagnostic efficacy for ovarian cancer, while the sensitivity for CRP was higher than for CA125, and the specificity for CRP was equal to that of CA125. The combination of CRP, CA125, and HE4, however, provided the strongest diagnostic capability. Furthermore, the diagnostic cut-off value for CRP with regard to ovarian cancer was 9.8 mg/L, and high levels of CRP were correlated with stage and tumor size of ovarian cancer. Our study indicated that CRP is valuable in the diagnosis of ovarian cancer, and that combining CRP with CA125 and HE4 improved the diagnostic efficacy with respect to ovarian cancer.

Animals may use different reproductive strategies depending on environmental conditions. This study investigated the effects of maternal stress induced by exposure to predator odors on reproductive output and adult offspring quality in pregnant Brandt’s voles (Lasiopodomys brandtii). We exposed pregnant Brandt’s voles to cat urine, rabbit urine, or distilled water for 18 days (1 h/day). Our results indicated that pregnant voles in the cat odor-exposed group tended to produce more offspring and the number of viable female offspring was larger. However, we did not observe any differences in the sex ratios of vole offspring among the three treatment groups. Compared with the control (distilled water) group, female offspring of voles in the cat odor-exposed group had lower body weights, lengths, and smaller body weights in relation to body length, whereas they had larger ovaries in relation to body weight. Furthermore, the female offspring of the voles exposed to the cat odor had higher concentrations of serum estradiol and higher levels of gonadotropin-releasing hormone mRNA in the hypothalamus compared with the female offspring of the voles in the control group. However, we observed no differences among the male offspring in the three treatment groups. Our findings suggest that pregnant Brandt’s voles suffering from chronic exposure to predator odors will produce greater numbers of low-weight female offspring that probably possess higher breeding potential to improve the fitness via regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis.

In this study, meat quality traits were compared between squabs from two pigeon breeds: one Chinese indigenous breed, the Shiqi (SQ) meat-type pigeon, and an imported breed, the white king (WK) meat-type pigeon. Breed differences were detected in the content of intramuscular fat (IMF) in the breast muscle. SQ squabs had significantly higher IMF content than the WK birds. The shear force value (an objective measure of meat tenderness) of SQ birds was also relatively lower than that of the WK squabs. Further analysis of fatty acids profile revealed that SQ squabs exhibited significant advantage in the synthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids, while WK squabs were significantly higher in the sum of monounsaturated fatty acids. Breast muscle in the SQ squabs was also significantly higher in the ratio of polyunsaturated fatty acids to saturated fatty acids, as well as the sum of omega 6 fatty acids. Variability of expression levels of functional genes in relation to fat accumulation and meat tenderness was analysed by qRT-PCR. Gene expression analyses showed that the hepatic expression of LPL (lipoprotein lipase), FABP4 (fatty acid-binding protein 4), and CAPN2 (calpain-2) were significantly higher in the SQ squabs. In the breast muscle tissue, the FABP3 (fatty acid-binding protein 3) and CAPN2mRNA abundance was significantly higher in SQ squabs. Our results suggested that these differentially expressed genes might be candidate genes used in the programmes of targeted selection for squabs with higher IMF content, tender meat, and more favourable fatty acids composition.

Graphene oxide (GO) suspensions can act as a good dispersant and drug delivery system for effective dispersion and drug sustained release. In this study, we investigated the impact of GO on blood/liver lipids and gut microbiota structure in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hyperlipidemic mice. Oral administration of GO for 28 days remarkably decreased the lipid levels in blood and liver. GO did not decrease the total number of gut bacteria but increased the relative abundance of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA)-producing bacteria such as Clostridium clusters IV and Allobaculum spp. GO also enhanced the copying of bacterial butyryl coenzyme A transferase (BcoA), a key butyrate-producing gene. Although further pharmacological studies are still needed, these results provided an interesting hint that GO may exert beneficial effects on the host's metabolism via selective modulation of SCFA-producing gut microbes.

The widespread application of TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) as additives in foods such as gum, candy and puddings has dramatically increased the human ingestion and accumulation of these nanomaterials. Although the toxicity of TiO2 NPs has been extensively studied, their impact on gut microbiota in vivo still needs further research. In this study, TiO2 NPs with two main crystalline phases anatase and rutile were orally administrated to mice for 28 days. The dynamic influences of anatase and rutile on gut microbiota structures were investigated at doses equivalent to those consumed by people who love to eat candies. The results showed that titanium accumulated in the spleen, lung, and kidney but had no significant effects on organ histology. Gavage of rutile NPs but not anatase NPs resulted in longer intestinal villi and irregular arrangement of villus epithelial cells. Treatment with TiO2 NPs did not decrease gut microbiota diversity but shifted their structures in a time-dependent manner. Rutile NPs had a more pronounced influence on the gut microbiota than anatase NPs. The most influenced phylum was Proteobacteria, which was significantly increased by rutile but not by anatase. At the genus level, Prevotella was significantly decreased by both the TiO2 NPs, Rhodococcus was enriched by rutile NPs, and Bacteroides was increased by anatase NPs. Overall, these results suggested that chronic overconsumption of TiO2 NP-containing foods is likely to deteriorate the gastrointestinal tract and change the structures of microbiota. The crystalline phases may play an important role in mediating the intestinal impact of TiO2 NPs.
