Plasmon-mediated chemical reactions have attracted intensive research interest as a means of achieving desirable reaction yields and selectivity. The energetic charge carriers and elevated local temperature induced by the nonradiative decay of surface plasmons are thought to be responsible for improving reaction outcomes. This study reports that the plasmoelectric potential is another key contributor in plasmon-mediated electrochemistry. Additionally, we disclose a convenient and reliable method for quantifying the specific contributions of the plasmoelectric potential, hot electrons, and photothermal heating to the electroreduction of oxygen at the plasmonic Ag electrode, revealing that the plasmoelectric potential is the dominating nonthermal factor under short-wavelength illumination and moderate electrode bias. This work elucidates novel mechanistic understandings of plasmon-mediated electrochemistry, facilitating high-performance plasmonic electrocatalyst design optimization.

Herein, two mitochondria-targeting photosensitizers (PSs, CCVJ-Mito-1 and CCVJ-Mito-2) that exhibit a turn-on fluorescence response towards increasing viscosity are reported. Notably, CCVJ-Mito-2 exhibits absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region, and can be employed as a NIR PS targeting mitochondria and a fluorescent probe for tracking mitochondrial viscosity changes during photodynamic therapy (PDT). This dual functional PS can help to shed light on the dynamic changes of the cellular microenvironment during PDT and further guide the PDT process.

Musculoskeletal engineering has been considered as a promising approach to customize regenerated tissue (such as bone, cartilage, tendon, and ligament) via a self-healing performance. Recent advances have demonstrated the great potential of bioactive materials for regenerative medicine. Silk fibroin (SF), a natural polymer, is regarded as a remarkable bioactive material for musculoskeletal engineering thanks to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, and tunability. To improve tissue-engineering performance, silk fibroin is hybridized with other biomaterials to form silk-fibroin-based hybrid biomaterials, which achieve superior mechanical and biological performance. Herein, we summarize the recent development of silk-based hybrid biomaterials in musculoskeletal tissue with reasonable generalization and classification, mainly including silk fibroin-based inorganic and organic hybrid biomaterials. The applied inorganics are composed of calcium phosphate, graphene oxide, titanium dioxide, silica, and bioactive glass, while the polymers include polycaprolactone, collagen (or gelatin), chitosan, cellulose, and alginate. Purpose Because the discontinuous and uncertain characteristics of knowledge-based innovation cannot be reasonably interpreted by conventional management approaches, quantum mechanics which begins with uncertainty and concerns with a dynamic process of the complex system, has been exploratorily used in the management field. Although the theoretical new insights are provided by pioneering studies, quantitative research is in short supply. This paper aims to propose a quantum mechanics-based framework for quantitative research, thus extending the application of quantum mechanics in the knowledge management area from a dynamic system evolutionary standpoint. Design/methodology/approach Based on the similarity comparison between knowledge-based system evolution and atomic motion, the authors construct the atom-like structure of the knowledge-based system and elaborate the evolutionary mechanism of the knowledge-based system, thereby establishing the quantitative model. Apple and Zhongxing Telecom Equipment were selected for an empirical study to demonstrate the usefulness of the models for research on knowledge-based innovation and explore the unique knowledge-based innovation characteristics of the two firms. Findings First, the transition force of dynamic knowledge shows an inverted U shape; accumulating dynamic knowledge to a moderate degree not only facilitates transforming dynamic knowledge into static knowledge but also balances the relationship between the influence of knowledge force range and dynamic knowledge transformation. Second, existing knowledge is gradually substituted by new knowledge and knowledge density at a high knowledge energy level distinctly increases with a narrower bandwidth. Third, the investment loss is associated with resource configuration, resource utilization and the amount of accumulative dynamic knowledge before investment. Knowledge loss is negatively correlated with the knowledge compatibility coefficient. Research limitations/implications The authors use the advanced method in quantum mechanics to legitimately unveil the emergence mechanism of knowledge-based innovation. Meanwhile, the authors capture the non-linear transformation relationship of heterogeneous knowledge and expose the change in ways of both investment loss and knowledge loss that cannot be quantified by conventional models. In doing so, the authors not only reveal the principle of qualitative knowledge change but also offer practical implications for developing flexible and targeted innovation strategies. Originality/value First, by proposing a complete quantum mechanics-based framework, the authors not only supplement the quantitative research contents to knowledge-based innovation literature which proposed calls to conduct research in way of quantum mechanics but also overcome the difficulties of knowledge-based system conceptualization and measurement. Second, the authors reveal the uncertain change of knowledge transformation and measure the loss of investment and knowledge, which contribute to identifying defects of firms in knowledge-based innovation. Third, the authors explore the internal mechanism that led to knowledge-based innovation exhibits non-linear characteristics and capture unique dynamic relationships between different variables which affect the emergence of knowledge-based innovation.

Precise recognition of near-infrared (NIR) signals holds great prospects in optical communication, remote sensing, information security, and anti-counterfeiting. For these applications, filters with good NIR transparency are typically essential components. Currently, such NIR transparent filters are dominated by inorganic materials such as chalcogenide glasses. There are, so far, only a handful of organic molecules with suitable optical properties due to the rarity of organic materials with good NIR transparency and relatively flat absorption over the UV-visible region. Here, it is found that the library of NIR-transparent organic materials can be expanded by forming a charge-transfer complex (CTC) between a donor (D) and an acceptor (A) molecule that are commercially available. Via regulating the DA interaction, the CTC filter shows tunable absorption from the visible to NIR region with a relatively high penetration of NIR radiation (≈80%). The CTC filter can successfully highlight NIR information hidden in a complex environment and allow reading of NIR security images for advanced anti-counterfeiting. Moreover, the CTC filter can be used for viewing protected NIR information with good resolution, and thus provide a convenient tool for different security applications using NIR-encoded information.

Extensive recent efforts have been put on the design of high-performance organic near-infrared (NIR) photothermal agents (PTAs), especially over NIR-II bio-window (1000-1350 nm). So far, the development is mainly limited by the rarity of molecules with good NIR-II response. Here, we report organic nanoparticles of intermolecular charge-transfer complexes (CTCs) with easily programmable optical absorption. By employing different common donor and acceptor molecules to form CTC nanoparticles (CT NPs), absorption peaks of CT NPs can be controllably tuned from the NIR-I to NIR-II region. Notably, CT NPs formed with perylene and TCNQ have a considerably red-shifted absorption peak at 1040 nm and achieves a good photothermal conversion efficiency of 42 % under 1064 nm excitation. These nanoparticles were used for antibacterial application with effective activity towards both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. This work opens a new avenue into the development of efficient PTAs.

Pharmaceutical evaluations of nanomedicines are of great significance for their further launch into industry and clinic. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging plays essential roles in preclinical drug development by providing important insights into the biodistributions of drugs in vivo with deep tissue penetration and high spatiotemporal resolution. However, NIR-II fluorescence imaging has rarely been exploited for in vivo real-time pharmaceutical evaluations of nanomedicine. Herein, we developed a highly emissive NIR-II luminophore to establish a versatile nanoplatform to noninvasively monitor the in vivo metabolism of nanomedicines bound various polyethylene glycol (PEG) ligands in a real-time manner. An alternative D-A-D conjugated oligomer (DTTB) was synthesized to achieve NIR-II emission peaked at ∼1050 nm with high fluorescence QYs of 13.4% and a large absorption coefficient. By anchoring with the DTTB molecule, intrinsically fluorescent micelles were fabricated and bound with PEG ligands at various chain lengths. In vivo NIR-II fluorescence and photoacoustic imaging results revealed that an appropriate PEG chain length could effectively contribute to the longer blood circulation and better tumor targeting. In vivo therapeutic experiments also confirmed the optimized nanomedicines have efficient photothermal elimination of tumors and good biosafety. This work offered an alternative highly fluorescent NIR-II material and demonstrated a promising approach for real-time pharmaceutical evaluation of nanomedicine in vivo.

Effective multimodality phototheranostics under deep-penetration laser excitation is highly desired for tumor medicine, which is still at a deadlock due to lack of versatile photosensitizers with absorption located in the long-wavelength region. Herein, we demonstrate a stable organic photosensitizer nanoparticle based on molecular engineering of benzo[c]thiophene (BT)-based photoactivated molecules with strong wavelength-tunable absorption in the near-infrared region. Via molecular design, the absorption and singlet oxygen generation of BT molecules would be reliably tuned. Importantly, the nanoparticles with a red-shifted absorption peak of 843 nm not only show over 10-fold reactive oxygen species yield compared with indocyanine green but also demonstrate a notable photothermal effect and photoacoustic signal upon 808 nm excitation. The in vitro and in vivo experiments substantiate good multimodal anticancer efficacy and imaging performance of BT theranostics. This work provides an organic photosensitizer nanoparticle with long-wavelength excitation and high photoenergy conversion efficiency for multimodality phototherapy.

Two new mixed-ligand coordination polymers [Zn(bdc)(bib)]n (1, H2bdc = 1,3-dicarboxybenzene, bib = 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-yl)benzene) and [Zn(NH2-bdc)(bib)]n (2, NH2–H2bdc = 2-amino-1,4-dicarboxybenzene) are successfully prepared by the reaction of zinc nitrate, N-containing and dicarboxylate ligands under the same hydrothermal conditions. The anti-viability of compounds 1 and 2 is assessed with CCK-8 against SW480 colon cancer cells. To further explore the underlying mechanism of compounds, the cell apoptosis and ROS detection are performed in this experiment.

Solvothermal reactions of Co(NO3)2·6H2O or Ni(NO3)2·3H2O with 4,4′-di(1H-benzo[d]imidazol-1-yl)biphenyl (bimbb) and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (H2pdc) afford two one-dimensional coordination polymers with the chemical formulas [Co(bimbb)2(pdc)](H2O)2(1) and [Ni(bimbb)2(pdc)](H2O)2(2). Complexes 1 and 2 are characterized by the elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The RPMI-8226 human multiple myeloma cell proliferation is determined by the CCK-8 assay after treatment with complexes 1 and 2. The morphological changes of treated RPMI-8226 are observed with the Hoechst staining method, and the apoptotic related protein levels are determined by western blot after treatment with complexes 1 and 2.

MXenes, a new family of two-dimensional materials, are also known as transition metal carbides and nitride, with a general formula of M n +1X n T x (n = 1–3). Their inherent metallic conductivity and hydrophilic nature endow MXenes with fascinating physicochemical properties (optical, electronic, magnetic, light-to-heat conversion. etc.). The ultrathin layer structure and photothermal property attract many interests in biomedical applications, especially as phototherapeutic agents for cancer treatment. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of MXenes in the field of photothermal therapy and highlight the crucial biotic index for their preparation and evaluation. First, we introduce the main strategies for the preparation and surface modifications of biologically applied MXenes. Then, representative cases in the field of MXene-based photothermal application, such as photothermal therapy, synergistic therapy, and targeting treatments, are reviewed. Finally, the cytotoxicity and in vivo long-term biosafety are introduced. We also propose the underlying challenges and perspectives for MXene applications in terms of photothermal therapy.

In nano-electro-mechanical systems, a component named a compressive nano-rod sometimes bears lateral and axial loads at the same time, resulting in a vertical and horizontal bending deformation. Motivated by it, this paper presents the bending vertically and horizontally of a compressive nano-rod, and the nano-rod is subjected to lateral nonlinearly distributed loads and axial compressive stresses initially. Different from the previous studies most of which were concerned on a simply supported compressive rod with linear loads, a statically indeterminate fixed–fixed compressive nano-rod is investigated. Based on the strain gradient type of nonlocal continuum theory, we derive the theoretical formulations analytically. To this end, the nonlocal differential constitutions for stress and bending moment provide the bases of theoretical modeling. The effects of an internal characteristic scale and other external parameters on bending vertically and horizontally including the limit compressive stress, bending deflection and bending moment are examined, respectively, via the explicit results obtained in the theoretical model. It shows that the limit compressive stress decreases due to the existence of the nonlocal scale effect, but it increases with increasing the material stiffness of nano-rods. Hence, the critical value of material stiffness is predicted. If the material stiffness is higher than its critical value, the bending vertically and horizontally of compressive nano-rods with nonlinear loads is stale, while it turns to be instable if the material stiffness is lower than its critical value. Moreover, the nonlocal scale and material stiffness are coupled in bending vertically and horizontally. The work can offer a reference for designing, regulating and controlling the compressive nano-rods with nonlinearly distributed loads.

Hot carriers (HCs) and thermal effects, stemming from plasmon decays, are crucial for most plasmonic applications. However, quantifying these two effects remains extremely challenging due to the experimental difficulty in accurately measuring the temperature at reaction sites. Herein, we provide a novel strategy to disentangle HCs from photothermal effects based on the different traits of heat dissipation (long range) and HCs transport (short range), and quantitatively uncover the dominant and potential-dependent role of photothermal effect by investigating the rapid- and slow-response currents in plasmon-mediated electrochemistry at nanostructured Ag electrode. Furthermore, the plasmoelectric surface potential is found to contribute to the rapid-response currents, which is absent in the previous studies.

Traditional photosensitizers (PSs) show reduced singlet oxygen (1 O2 ) production and quenched fluorescence upon aggregation in aqueous media, which greatly affect their efficiency in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Meanwhile, non-targeting PSs generally yield low efficiency in antibacterial performance due to their short lifetimes and small effective working radii. Herein, a water-dispersible membrane anchor (TBD-anchor) PS with aggregation-induced emission is designed and synthesized to generate 1 O2 on the bacterial membrane. TBD-anchor showed efficient antibacterial performance towards both Gram-negative (Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus). Over 99.8 % killing efficiency was obtained for methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) when they were exposed to 0.8 μm of TBD-anchor at a low white light dose (25 mW cm-2 ) for 10 minutes. TBD-anchor thus shows great promise as an effective antimicrobial agent to combat the menace of multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Rational manipulation of energy utilization from excited-state radiation of theranostic agents with a donor–acceptor structure is relatively unexplored. Herein, we present an effective strategy to tune the exciton dynamics of radiative excited state decay for augmenting two-photon nanotheranostics. As a proof of concept, two thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules with different electron-donating segments are engineered, which possess donor–acceptor structures and strong emissions in the deep-red region with aggregation-induced emission characteristics. Molecular simulations demonstrate that change of the electron-donating sections could effectively regulate the singlet–triplet energy gap and oscillator strength, which promises efficient energy flow. A two-photon laser with great permeability is used to excite TADF NPs to perform as theranostic agents with singlet oxygen generation and fluorescence imaging. These unique performances enable the proposed TADF emitters to exhibit tailored balances between two-photon singlet oxygen generation and fluorescence emission. This result demonstrates that TADF emitters can be rationally designed as superior candidates for nanotheranostic agents by the custom controlling exciton dynamics., Exciton dynamics can be manipulated rationally in the design of TADF materials for nanotheranostics. Regulating the ΔEST and f promises efficient energy flow for tailoring balances between singlet oxygen generation and fluorescence emission.

Achieving efficient solar steam generation under natural sunlight has huge potential for sewage purification and seawater desalination. Plasmonic resonance has been extensively exploited for enhancing and extending the range of optical absorption. Until now, most reported broadband plasmonic solar absorbers have been designed by compact aggregation or engineering plasmonic architectures. In this work, we develop a new plasmonic absorber using gold nanostructures with the shape of a trepang (nano-trepang). By rationally regulating anisotropy at the single nanoparticle level, the nano-trepang shows good optical absorption over the entire solar spectrum (92.9%) with no requirement of engineering nanoparticle aggregation or constructing plasmonic architectures. The nano-trepang was then loaded into a polymeric aerogel and the network showed an excellent solar-to-vapor energy conversion efficiency of 79.3%. Under 1 sun AM1.5 G irradiation, a stable solar evaporation rate of 2.7 kg m−2 h−1 can be achieved, with high performance anti-salt precipitation in practical seawater steam generation. This work shows a broadband plasmonic absorber with aggregation-independent performance for highly efficient solar stream generation and provides a new strategy for practical solar desalination.

We developed a biodegradable photothermal therapeutic (PTT) agent, π-conjugated oligomer nanoparticles (F8-PEG NPs), for highly efficient cancer theranostics. By exploiting an oligomer with excellent near-infrared (NIR) absorption, the nanoparticles show a high photothermal conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 82%, surpassing those of reported inorganic and organic PTT agents. In addition, the oligomer nanoparticles show excellent photostability and good biodegradability. The F8-PEG NPs are also demonstrated to have excellent biosafety and PTT efficacy both in vitro and in vivo. This contribution not only proposes a promising oligomer-based PTT agent but also provides insight into developing highly efficient nanomaterials for cancer theranostics.

We report the first demonstration using a stable π-radical as a versatile photosensitizer for hypoxia-overcoming photodynamic therapy. After self-assembling the radical molecules into radical nanoparticles (NPs), the NPs show good water dispersibility, good biocompatibility, broad near-infrared (NIR) absorption and emission at ∼800 nm. Significantly, the radical NPs remain stable in various biological mediums, after 100 days exposure to the ambient environment, and even after long-term laser irradiation, which is superior to many reported radical-based materials. More importantly, upon 635 nm laser irradiation, sufficient superoxide radical (O2−˙) generation and in vitro cytotoxicity were observed addressing the most important hurdle for successful PDT in the oxygen-deficient tumor microenvironment. In addition, the radical NPs are also demonstrated to have effective in vivo PDT efficacy, and excellent biosafety.

Diseases are often accompanied by abnormal expression of gaseous signaling molecules including nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen sulfide (Hsub2/subS). Sensing these gaseous markers is thus important for identification and investigation of pathological processes. In contrast to conventional approaches, such as electrochemical, chromatographical methods, etc., optical imaging shows merits including high sensitivity, good spatiotemporal resolution, and ideal selectivity. Especially, optical molecular probes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have good potential for bio-detection since they show maintained optical signals in the aggregated state. Recently, many AIE molecular probes have been developed for imaging disease-related gaseous signaling molecules. Generally, these probes recognize the analytes through turn-on or ratiometric approaches. This review summarizes the recent progress in organic probes with AIE properties for sensing gaseous markers and relative disease diagnosis applications. Based on the types of analytes, the probes are divided into three groups: NO, CO and Hsub2/subS sensors. Molecular designs and sensing mechanisms of these AIE probes are highlighted. Their gaseous signaling molecules detection applications at cellular and animal levels are presented. Finally, some existing problems and future promising development directions are discussed with the hope to inspire further developments of AIE probes for precise disease diagnosis.

Solar-driven water vaporization for freshwater production attracts significant interest due to its potential for solving global water scarcity problems. In this review, the recent development of management strategies via diverse rational designs in terms of light, thermal, water, and anti-salt fouling for enhancement of overall vaporization efficiency, is summarized. For device design, a host-guest concept is raised for clearly elaborating the detailed function and interaction between the solar-thermal material and the substrates. In addition, the rising technologies derived from solar vaporization, such as energy generation, photocatalysis, dehumidification, salt harvesting, sterilization, and biofuel production, are also highlighted. This review provides a new horizon toward the development of solar technologies and practical applications.

Temperate phages (active prophages induced from bacteria) help control pathogenicity, modulate community structure, and maintain gut homeostasis1. Complete phage genome sequences are indispensable for understanding phage biology. Traditional plaque techniques are inapplicable to temperate phages due to the lysogenicity of these phages, which curb the identification and characterization of temperate phages. Existing in silico tools for prophage prediction usually fail to detect accurate and complete temperate phage genomes2–5. In this study, by a novel computational method mining both the integrated active prophages and their spontaneously induced forms (temperate phages), we obtained 192,326 complete temperate phage genomes from bacterial next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, hence expanded the existing number of complete temperate phage genomes by more than 100-fold. The reliability of our method was validated by wet-lab experiments. The experiments demonstrated that our method can accurately determine the complete genome sequences of the temperate phages, with exact flanking sites (attP and attB sites), outperforming other state-of-the-art prophage prediction methods. Our analysis indicates that temperate phages are likely to function in the evolution of microbes by 1) cross-infecting different bacterial host species; 2) transferring antibiotic resistance and virulence genes; and 3) interacting with hosts through restriction-modification and CRISPR/anti-CRISPR systems. This work provides a comprehensive complete temperate phage genome database and relevant information, which can serve as a valuable resource for phage research.

Solar steam generation is considered as an efficient way for addressing water shortage issues via seawater desalination and wastewater purification. In a solar evaporator, an absorber would convert optical energy to heat for evaporating nearby water. In this process, many low-boiling-point contaminants can also be evaporated along with water steam, which compromises the effectiveness of purification. There is, so far, no study on the removal of such low-boiling-point contaminants such as organic pesticides in wastewater. To address this problem, we demonstrate a versatile carbon hybrid aerogel (CHA) as a solar powered water purification platform. With an elaborate absorber design, the maximum solar evaporation rate of 2.1 kg m-2 h-1 is achieved under 1 sun illumination. More importantly, CHA can effectively suppress the evaporation of low-boiling-point contaminants including common pesticides and mercury ion via its strong adsorption and retention effect. Synergetic steaming and the adsorption of CHA will inspire more paradigms of solar steam generation technologies for applications relevant to detoxification and water remediation.

In vivo fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) has been considered as a promising technique for visualizing mammals. However, the definition of the NIR-II region and the mechanism accounting for the excellent performance still need to be perfected. Herein, we simulate the photon propagation in the NIR region (to 2340 nm), confirm the positive contribution of moderate light absorption by water in intravital imaging and perfect the NIR-II window as 900–1880 nm, where 1400–1500 and 1700–1880 nm are defined as NIR-IIx and NIR-IIc regions, respectively. Moreover, 2080–2340 nm is newly proposed as the third near-infrared (NIR-III) window, which is believed to provide the best imaging quality. The wide-field fluorescence microscopy in the brain is performed around the NIR-IIx region, with excellent optical sectioning strength and the largest imaging depth of intravital NIR-II fluorescence microscopy to date. We also propose 1400 nm long-pass detection in off-peak NIR-II imaging whose performance exceeds that of NIR-IIb imaging, using bright fluorophores with short emission wavelength., Moderate light absorption by bio-tissue is conducive to the imaging performance. The second near-infrared window is perfected as 900–1880 nm, and 2080–2340 nm is proposed as the third near-infrared window.

Developing red thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, attainable for both high-efficient red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and non-doped deep red/near-infrared (NIR) OLEDs, is challenging. Now, two red emitters, BPPZ-PXZ and mDPBPZ-PXZ, with twisted donor-acceptor structures were designed and synthesized to study molecular design strategies of high-efficiency red TADF emitters. BPPZ-PXZ employs the strictest molecular restrictions to suppress energy loss and realizes red emission with a photoluminescence quantum yield (ΦPL ) of 100±0.8 % and external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 25.2 % in a doped OLED. Its non-doped OLED has an EQE of 2.5 % owing to unavoidable intermolecular π-π interactions. mDPBPZ-PXZ releases two pyridine substituents from its fused acceptor moiety. Although mDPBPZ-PXZ realizes a lower EQE of 21.7 % in the doped OLED, its non-doped device shows a superior EQE of 5.2 % with a deep red/NIR emission at peak of 680 nm.

Protein misfolding and aberrant aggregations are associated with multiple prevalent and intractable diseases. Inhibition of amyloid assembly is a promising strategy for the treatment of amyloidosis. Reported here is the design and synthesis of a reactive conjugated polymer, a poly(p-phenylene vinylene) derivative, functionalized with p-nitrophenyl esters (PPV-NP) and it inhibits the assembly of amyloid proteins, degrades preformed fibrils, and reduces the cytotoxicity of amyloid aggregations in living cells. PPV-NP is attached to the proteins through hydrophobic interactions and irreversible covalent linkage. PPV-NP also exhibited the capacity to eliminate Aβ plaques in brain slices in ex vivo assays. This work represents an innovative attempt to inhibit protein pathogenic aggregates, and may offer insights into the development of therapeutic strategies for amyloidosis.
