Abstract Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) are a significant health concern in developed countries due to their considerable mortality rate. The crucial factor of the progression of AAA is the release of neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a new imaging technique that offers the capability to detect superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPION) with exceptional sensitivity. We aimed to investigate the functional imaging of MPI for the detection and monitoring of neutrophil infiltration within AAA. A novel multimodal imaging agent targeting neutrophils, PEG-Fe3O4-Ly6G–Cy7 nanoparticles (Ly6G NPs), were designed by coupling Fe3O4 nanoparticles with Ly6G antibodies and Cy7. The targeting and sensitivity of Ly6G NPs were assessed using MPI and fluorescence imaging (FLI) in the AAA mouse model. After the inhibition of NETosis, the degree of neutrophil infiltration and AAA severity were assessed using MPI with Ly6G NPs. Ly6G NPs accurately localized and quantitatively analyzed AAA lesion sites in mice using MPI/FLI/CT. Compared to the control group, elevated MPI and FLI signal intensities were detected at the abdominal aortic lesion site, and neutrophil infiltration and NETs accumulation were detected by histological analysis in the AAA models. After the inhibition of NETs accumulation in vivo, pathological damage in the abdominal aorta was significantly reduced, along with a decrease in the accumulation of Ly6G NPs and MPI signals. This multimodal MPI strategy revealed that nanoparticles targeting Ly6G can be used to detect neutrophil infiltration within AAA and monitor AAA severity.

Abstract Pressure ulcers (PU) are caused by persistent long-term pressure, which compromises the integrity of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous adipose tissue layer by layer, making it difficult to heal. Platelet products such as platelet lysate (PL) can promote tissue regeneration by secreting numerous growth factors based on clinical studies on skin wound healing. However, the components of PL are difficult to retain in wounds. Gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) is a photopolymerizable hydrogel that has lately emerged as a promising material for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The PL liquid was extracted, flow cytometrically detected for CD41a markers, and evenly dispersed in the GelMA hydrogel to produce a surplus growth factor hydrogel system (PL@GM). The microstructure of the hydrogel system was observed under a scanning electron microscope, and its sustained release efficiency and biological safety were tested in vitro. Cell viability and migration of human dermal fibroblasts, and tube formation assays of human umbilical vein endothelial cells were applied to evaluate the ability of PL to promote wound healing and regeneration in vitro. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and western blot analyses were performed to elucidate the skin regeneration mechanism of PL. We verified PL’s therapeutic effectiveness and histological analysis on the PU model. PL promoted cell viability, migration, wound healing and angiogenesis in vitro. Real-time PCR and western blot indicated PL suppressed inflammation and promoted collagen I synthesis by activating STAT3. PL@GM hydrogel system demonstrated optimal biocompatibility and favorable effects on essential cells for wound healing. PL@GM also significantly stimulated PU healing, skin regeneration, and the formation of subcutaneous collagen and blood vessels. PL@GM could accelerate PU healing by promoting fibroblasts to migrate and secrete collagen and endothelial cells to vascularize. PL@GM promises to be an effective and convenient treatment modality for PU, like chronic wound treatment.

ObjectiveTo explore the effects of different test positions on quantitative muscle strength of wrist and finger flexor muscle groups and to establish a standardized muscle strength test protocol for each muscle group.MethodsForty healthy subjects （12 males and 28 females） were recruited. A portable digital quantitative muscle strength tester, Micro FET2TM, was used to measure the flexor muscle strength of each finger and the wrist joint at the 30° extension, 0° neutral, and 30° flexion, respectively. Palmar abduction strength of the thumb was measured at 30° and 60°, respectively. Ten subjects were randomly selected from the 40 subjects, and the quantitative muscle strength of each muscle group was tested again by the same operator after an interval of 10 to 15 days.ResultsExcept for the fact that in males, there was no significant difference in flexor muscle strength of thumb and wrist joint between 30° of wrist extension and neutral 0° position, the muscle strength of the other fingers flexion and wrist palmar flexor showed the following characteristics： 30° of wrist extension > neutral 0° position > 30° of flexion, and the PAST was 30°>60°; The flexor muscle strength of all the subjects was thumb > index finger > middle finger > ring finger > little finger; All muscle strength values of male were greater than those of female, and the difference was statistically significant （P0.05）. The reliability of muscle strength values measured at different times in 10 subjects was good.ConclusionThe quantitative muscle strength of each muscle group of the hand and wrist is affected by the test position, and a standardized and uniformed test position should be adopted in the actual identification. Micro FET2TM has good reliability for hand and wrist quantitative muscle strength testing. The 30° extension of the wrist can be used as the best standardized test position for the flexion muscle strength of each finger and wrist joint. The 30° position can be used as the best standardized test position for PAST.

Abstract Improving the utilization of thermal energy is crucial in the world nowadays due to the high levels of energy consumption. One way to achieve this is to use phase change materials (PCMs) as thermal energy storage media, which can be used to regulate temperature or provide heating/cooling in various applications. However, PCMs have limitations like low thermal conductivity, leakage, and corrosion. To overcome these challenges, PCMs are encapsulated into microencapsulated phase change materials (MEPCMs) capsules/fibers. This encapsulation prevents PCMs from leakage and corrosion issues, and the microcapsules/fibers act as conduits for heat transfer, enabling efficient exchange between the PCM and its surroundings. Microfluidics‐based MEPCMs have attracted intensive attention over the past decade due to the exquisite control over flow conditions and size of microcapsules. This review paper aims to provide an overview of the state‐of‐art progress in microfluidics‐based encapsulation of PCMs. The principle and method of preparing MEPCM capsules/fibers using microfluidic technology are elaborated, followed by the analysis of their thermal and microstructure characteristics. Meanwhile, the applications of MEPCM in the fields of building energy conservation, textiles, military aviation, solar energy utilization, and bioengineering are summarized. Finally, the perspectives on MEPCM capsules/fibers are discussed.

Lower extremity peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a growing global health problem. New methods to diagnose PAD have been explored in recent years. At present, the majority of imaging methods for PAD focus on the macrovascular blood flow, and the exploration of microcirculation and tissue perfusion of PAD remains largely insufficient. In this report, we applied three new imaging technologies, i.e., second near-infrared region (NIR-II, 900–1,880 nm wavelengths) imaging, optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), and laser speckle flowgraphy (LSFG), in a PAD patient with a healthy human subject as control. Our results showed that the PAD patient had poorer tissue perfusion than the control without observed adverse effects. Moreover, compared with the first near-infrared region (NIR-I, 700–900 nm wavelengths) imaging results, NIR-II imaging had a higher signal-to-background ratio and resolution than NIR-I imaging and detected microvessels that were not detected by NIR-I imaging. These observations suggested that NIR-II imaging, OCTA, and LSFG are potentially safe and effective methods for diagnosing PAD.

Abstract Background Lenvatinib is widely used in treatment of unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (uHCC), but the benefit of its combination with immunotherapy needs to be verified. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of tislelizumab plus lenvatinib in systemic treatment-naïve patients with uHCC. Methods In this multicenter, single-arm, phase 2 study, systemic treatment-naïve patients with uHCC received tislelizumab 200 mg every three weeks plus lenvatinib (bodyweight ≥ 60 kg: 12 mg; 6 responders were needed in stage 1 (n = 30) to continue the study, and ≥ 18 responders were needed by the end of stage 2 (n = 60) to demonstrate statistical superiority to a historical control of lenvatinib monotherapy. Results Sixty-four patients were enrolled. No DLTs were reported. The study achieved statistical superiority (p = 0.0003) with 23 responders assessed by IRC per RECIST v1.1 in the first 60 patients of the efficacy evaluable analysis set (n = 62). After a median follow-up of 15.7 months, confirmed ORR and disease control rate were 38.7% (24/62, 95% confidence interval [CI], 26.6–51.9) and 90.3% (56/62, 95% CI, 80.1–96.4), respectively. Median progression-free survival was 8.2 months (95% CI, 6.8–not evaluable). Overall survival rate at 12 months was 88.6% (95% CI, 77.7–94.4). Grade ≥ 3 treatment-related adverse events occurred in 18 (28.1%) patients. Conclusions Tislelizumab plus lenvatinib demonstrated promising antitumor activity with favourable tolerability as first-line therapy for patients with uHCC. Abstract Pathological conditions linked to shear stress have been identified in hematological diseases, cardiovascular diseases, and cancer. These conditions often exhibit significantly elevated shear stress levels, surpassing 1000 dyn/cm2 in severely stenotic arteries. Heightened shear stress can induce mechanical harm to endothelial cells, potentially leading to bleeding and fatal consequences. However, current technology still grapples with limitations, including inadequate flexibility in simulating bodily shear stress environments, limited range of shear stress generation, and spatial and temporal adaptability. Consequently, a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms underlying the impact of shear stress on physiological and pathological conditions, like thrombosis, remains inadequate. To address these limitations, this study presents a microfluidic-based shear stress generation chip as a proposed solution. The chip achieves a substantial 929-fold variation in shear stress solely by adjusting the degree of constriction in branch channels after PDMS fabrication. Experiments demonstrated that a rapid increase in shear stress up to 1000 dyn/cm2 significantly detached 88.2% cells from the substrate. Long-term exposure (24 h) to shear stress levels below 8.3 dyn/cm2 did not significantly impact cell growth. Furthermore, cells exposed to shear stress levels equal to or greater than 8.3 dyn/cm2 exhibited significant alterations in aspect ratio and orientation, following a normal distribution. This microfluidic chip provides a reliable tool for investigating cellular responses to the wide-ranging shear stress existing in both physiological and pathological flow conditions. Abstract Background Atherosclerosis (AS) is a persistent inflammatory condition triggered and exacerbated by several factors including lipid accumulation, endothelial dysfunction and macrophages infiltration. Nobiletin (NOB) has been reported to alleviate atherosclerosis; however, the underlying mechanism remains incompletely understood. Methods This study involved comprehensive bioinformatic analysis, including multidatabase target prediction; GO and KEGG enrichment analyses for function and pathway exploration; DeepSite and AutoDock for drug binding site prediction; and CIBERSORT for immune cell involvement. In addition, target intervention was verified via cell scratch assays, oil red O staining, ELISA, flow cytometry, qRT‒PCR and Western blotting. In addition, by establishing a mouse model of AS, it was demonstrated that NOB attenuated lipid accumulation and the extent of atherosclerotic lesions. Results (1) Altogether, 141 potentially targetable genes were identified through which NOB could intervene in atherosclerosis. (2) Lipid and atherosclerosis, fluid shear stress and atherosclerosis may be the dominant pathways and potential mechanisms. (3) ALB, AKT1, CASP3 and 7 other genes were identified as the top 10 target genes. (4) Six genes, including PPARG, MMP9, SRC and 3 other genes, were related to the M0 fraction. (5) CD36 and PPARG were upregulated in atherosclerosis samples compared to the normal control. (6) By inhibiting lipid uptake in RAW264.7 cells, NOB prevents the formation of foam cell. (7) In RAW264.7 cells, the inhibitory effect of oxidized low-density lipoprotein on foam cells formation and lipid accumulation was closely associated with the PPARG signaling pathway. (8) In vivo validation showed that NOB significantly attenuated intra-arterial lipid accumulation and macrophage infiltration and reduced CD36 expression. Conclusions Nobiletin alleviates atherosclerosis by inhibiting lipid uptake via the PPARG/CD36 pathway.

BackgroundAtherosclerosis (AS) is a chronic arterial pathology and a leading cause of vascular disease-related mortality. Fatty streaks in the arterial wall develop into atherosclerosis and characteristic plaques. Clinical interventions typically involve lipid-lowering medications and drugs for stabilizing vulnerable plaques, but no direct therapeutic agent specifically targets atherosclerosis. Garlic, also locally known as DASUAN, is recognized as a widely sold herbal dietary supplement esteemed for its cardiovascular benefits. However, the specific mechanisms of garlic’s anti-atherosclerotic effects remain unclear.AimsThis study aims to elucidate the pharmacological mechanisms through which garlic ameliorates atherosclerosis.MethodsThe study identified the major active components and targets of garlic by screening the TCMSP, TCM-ID, and, ETCM databases. Atherosclerosis-associated targets were obtained from the DisGeNET, GeneCards, and DiGSeE databases, and garlic intervention targets were determined through intersection. Utilizing the intersected genes, Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were conducted using R software. A garlic component-disease target network was constructed using Cytoscape. RNA-seq datasets from the GEO database were utilized to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) associated with atherosclerosis. The target genes were intersected with DEGs and the FerrDb (ferroptosis database). Molecular docking predicted the binding interactions between active components and the core targets. In vitro and in vivo experiments validated the identified core targets.ResultsThe integration of garlic drug targets with atherosclerotic disease targets identified 230 target genes. Intersection with RNA-seq DEGs revealed 15 upregulated genes, including 8 target genes related to ferroptosis. Molecular docking indicated favorable affinities between garlic active components [Sobrol A, (+)-L-Alliin, Benzaldoxime, Allicin] and target genes (DPP4, ALOX5, GPX4). Experimental validation showed that GARLIC reduces the expression of ferroptosis-related genes in AS, suggesting its therapeutic potential through the regulation of ferroptosis.ConclusionGarlic ameliorates atherosclerosis by targeting intra-plaque ferroptosis and reducing lipid peroxidation. These findings provide novel insights into the pharmacological mechanisms underlying the efficacy of garlic in treating AS.

BackgroundPrevious research has hinted at a crucial link between gut microbiota and arterial embolism and thrombosis, yet the causal relationship remains enigmatic. To gain a deeper understanding, we aimed to comprehensively explore the causal relationship and elucidate the impact of the gut microbiota on the risk through a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study.MethodsGenetic instrumental variables for gut microbiota were identified from a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 18,340 participants. Summary statistics for IBS were drawn from a GWAS including 1,076 cases and 381,997 controls. We used the inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method as the primary analysis. To test the robustness of our results, we further performed the weighted median method, MR-Egger regression, and MR pleiotropy residual sum and outlier test.ResultsWe identified three bacterial traits that were associated with the risk of arterial embolism and thrombosis: odds ratio (OR): 1.58, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.08–2.31, p = 0.017 for genus Catenibacterium; OR: 0.64, 95% CI: 0.42–0.96, p = 0.031 for genus Dialister; and OR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.25–3.47, p = 0.005 for genus Odoribacter. Introduction: Rydberg atoms are ideal for measuring electric fields due to their unique physical properties. However, low-frequency electric fields below MHz can be challenging due to the accumulation of ionized free electrons on the atomic vapor cell’s surface, acting as a shield.Method: This paper proposes a Cavity-enhanced three-photon system (CETPS) measurement scheme, which uses a long-wavelength laser to excite the Rydberg state, reducing atomic ionization and enhancing detection spectrum resolution. A theoretical model is proposed to explain the quantum coherence effect of the light field, measured electric field, and the atomic system.Result: The results show that the proposed scheme significantly increases the electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) spectral peak and narrows the spectral width, resulting in the maximum slope increasing by more than an order of magnitude.Discussion: The paper also discusses the impact of the Rabi frequency of the two laser fields and the coupling coefficient of the optical cavity on the transmission spectrum amplitude and linewidth, along with the optimal configuration of these parameters in the CEPTS scheme.

Abstract Background Among the safest procedures for anastomosis in pancreaticoduodenectomy, Blumgart pancreaticojejunostomy is associated with low rates of postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) and postoperative complications. However, this technique is difficult to perform during laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy (LPD). This study presents a modified Blumgart method using a homemade crochet needle to facilitate laparoscopic pancreaticojejunostomy and evaluates its safety and reliability. Methods From February 2019 to October 2022, 96 LPD surgeries with the new technique were performed by the same surgeons in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. The operative details (operative time, pancreaticojejunostomy time, POPF rate, postoperative complication rate, mortality rate) were analyzed along with clinical and pathological indicators (pancreatic duct diameter, pancreatic texture, and histopathological findings). Results There were 54 men and 42 women with a mean age of 63.38 ± 10.41 years. The intraoperative bleeding volume, operative time and postoperative length of hospital stay were 198.43 ± 132.97 mL, 445.30 ± 87.05 min and 13.68 ± 4.02 days, respectively. The operation time of pancreaticojejunostomy was 66.28 ± 10.17 min. Clinically relevant POPFs (grades B and C) occurred in 14.6% of patients. Only one patient had postoperative abdominal hemorrhage and was cured after reoperation. There were no operative or in-hospital deaths. With our proposed modification, the pancreatic duct and jejunal orifice are aligned correctly during duct-to-mucosa (DTM) after the application of external traction through the homemade crochet needle. The space between the posterior wall of pancreatic remnant and jejunal loop can be exposed by adjusting the tension of the external threads, which can facilitate DTM. Conclusions A modified Blumgart method using a homemade crochet needle could be technically feasible and safe during LPD. A randomized control trial is needed to confirm these findings.

Multiple submerged breakwaters (MSBWs) are commonly used coastal protection structures due to their specific advantages over the emerged ones. Rip currents, as the inevitable natural hazard in the gaps of these constructions, are investigated numerically in the present study. A fully nonlinear mild-slope equation (NMSE) model possessing both fully nonlinear and fully dispersive properties is validated and adopted in the simulations. With four monochromatic wave conditions of different wave heights, periods and incidences representing low-energy, typical, storm and oblique waves tested, the flow patterns and the low-frequency oscillations of the rip currents are studied. For the convenience of risk assessment, the rip risk level is divided into three degrees according to the maximum rip flow speed. The effects of the configurations of the MSBWs on the rip current system as well as the rip risk level are examined, considering different breakwater widths, heights, forms, gap widths and gap numbers. Simulation results suggest that the cross-shore configurations of MSBWs influence the rip risk level by inducing different wave energy dissipations but the longshore configurations of MSBWs by changing flow field patterns.

BackgroundMalignant Triton tumor (MTT) is a relatively rare subtype of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST) characterized by rhabdomyosarcoma differentiation. There are no distinct features of MTT, and it is easy to misdiagnose preoperatively.Case presentationHere, we describe a rare case of primary hepatic MTT in a 56-year-old male who presented with nonspecific abdominal pain for 1 day. Magnetic resonance imaging and abdominal computed tomography revealed an extremely large mass located in the right liver with intratumoral hemorrhage, arterial-phase hypervascularity and subsequent washout on dynamic contrast-enhanced imaging and the possibility of intrahepatic metastasis. Tumor marker levels revealed only an elevated level of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP: 5304.0 ng/mL). Then, he received transcatheter arterial chemoembolization combined with lenvatinib and pembrolizumab, and he was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma. After 3 months of neoadjuvant therapy, we resected the hepatic cancer and adherent diaphragmatic pleura. MTT was confirmed by postoperative pathology and immunohistochemistry.ConclusionDespite the preoperative diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma with a rising serum AFP level, typical CT and MRI findings, histopathology assessment showing MPNST with rhabdomyosarcoma differentiation confirms the diagnosis of primary hepatic MTT.

Abstract Background Gastroduodenal artery (GDA) stump erosion hemorrhage is a fatal complication after pancreaticoduodenectomy. This study aimed to determine whether GDA stump wrapping with the teres hepatis ligament during pancreaticoduodenectomy decreased the incidence of postpancreatectomy hemorrhage (PPH). Methods We reviewed 307 patients who had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy between March 2019 and June 2022. The patients were divided into two groups according to application of GDA stump wrapping with the teres hepatis ligament: GDA wrapping group (165 patients) and no-wrapping group (142 patients). The perioperative data were compared between the groups. Results The clinical characteristics were balanced between the two groups. Grades B and C PPH and GDA-stump-related hemorrhage were significantly reduced in the GDA wrapping group compared with the no-wrapping group (PPH B/C, 13.4% vs 6.1%, P = 0.029; GDA hemorrhage, 5.6% vs 0.6%, P = 0.014). No difference was observed in the incidence of clinically relevant postoperative pancreatic fistula, biliary leak, intra-abdominal abscess, delayed gastric emptying, 90-day mortality, and postoperative hospital stay between the two groups. Conclusion Wrapping GDA stump with the teres hepatis ligament reduced the incidence of GDA-stump-related PPH. Therefore, the wrapping technique is a simple and effective strategy to prevent PPH. Prospective studies are needed to confirm the benefit of this procedure.

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is a highly aggressive and fast-growing brain tumor, characterized by rapid progression, a very poor prognosis, and a high likelihood of recurrence. Thus, effective new therapeutic targets are urgently needed. Transmembrane proteins (TMEMs) have pro-cancer effects on multiple cancer types, but the mechanisms underlying the effects of TMEM17, particularly its role in GBM, remain unclear. Methods: We conducted bioinformatics analyses and immunohistochemistry to evaluate the role of TMEM17 in a variety of cancer types. Functional assays were conducted included the Cell Counting Kit-8 assay, annexin V-FITC/PI double staining, 5-ethynyl-2′-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation assay, wound healing assay, transwell invasion assay, and dual luciferase assay. Results: We found that TMEM17 is associated with a poor prognosis in GBM. Prognostic analyses confirmed that high TMEM17 expression predicted poorer survival, establishing its significance as an independent prognostic factor. Functional assays demonstrated that silencing TMEM17 in GBM cell lines inhibited proliferation and invasion, and induced apoptosis, underscoring its role in tumor aggressiveness. From a mechanistic perspective, we discovered that the Ying Yang 1 (YY1) transcription factor can bind to the promoter of TMEM17, regulating its upregulation. Regarding downstream mechanisms, knocking down TMEM17 inhibited the phosphoinositide 3-kinase/AKT pathway. These findings suggest that TMEM17 plays a significant role in GBM and may be a potential therapeutic target for this cancer. Conclusion: These data prove that TMEM17 plays a key role in the regulation of GBM and has great potential as a clinical therapeutic target for GBM.

Photoacoustics can provide a direct measurement of light absorption by microalgae depending on the photosynthesis pigment within them. In this study, we have performed photoacoustic flowmetry on living microalgae cells to measure their flow characteristics, which include flow speed, flow angle, flow direction, and, more importantly, the photoacoustic absorption spectrum, all by observing the photoacoustic Doppler power spectra during their flowing state. A supercontinuum pulsed laser with a high repetition frequency is used as the light source: through intensity modulation at a specified frequency, it can provide wavelength-selectable excitation of a photoacoustic signal centered around this frequency. Our approach can be useful to simultaneously measure the flow characteristics of microalgae and easily discriminate their different species with high accuracy in both static and dynamic states, thus facilitating the study of their cultivation and their role in our ecosystem.

This study that modified polysulfone membranes with different end-group chemical functionalities were prepared using chemical synthesis methods and experimentally characterized. The molecular dynamics (MD) method were used to discuss the adsorption mechanism of proteins on functionalized modified polysulfone membrane materials from a molecular perspective, revealing the interactions between different functionalized membrane surfaces and protein adsorption. Theoretical analysis combined with basic experiments and MD simulations were used to explore the orientation and spatial conformational changes of protein adsorption at the molecular level. The results show that BSA exhibits different variability and adsorption characteristics on membranes with different functional group modifications. On hydrophobic membrane surfaces, BSA shows the least stable configuration stability, making it prone to nonspecific structural changes. In addition, surface charge effects lead to electrostatic repulsion for BSA and reduce the protein adsorption sites. These MD simulation results are consistent with experimental findings, providing new design ideas and support for modifying blood-compatible membrane materials.

BackgroundThe association between the sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index remains inadequately understood. This investigation seeks to elucidate the connection between the TyG index and SNHL.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, we utilized datasets sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). A comprehensive analysis was conducted on 1,851 participants aged 20 to 69, utilizing complete audiometry data from the NHANES database spanning from 2007 to 2018. All enrolled participants had accessible hearing data, and the average thresholds were measured and calculated as both low-frequency pure-tone average and high-frequency pure-tone average. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) was defined as an average pure tone of 20 dB or higher in at least one better ear. Our analysis involved the application of multivariate linear regression models to examine the linear relationship between the TyG index and SNHL. To delineate any non-linear associations, we utilized fitted smoothing curves and conducted threshold effect analysis. Furthermore, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study, leveraging genetic data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) on circulating lipids, blood glucose, and SNHL. The primary analytical method for the MR study was the application of the inverse-variance-weighted (IVW) approach.ResultsIn our multivariate linear regression analysis, a substantial positive correlation emerged between the TyG index and SNHL [2.10 (1.80-2.44), p < 0.0001]. Furthermore, using a two-segment linear regression model, we found an L-shaped relationship between TyG index, fasting blood glucose and SNHL with an inflection point of 9.07 and 94 mg/dL, respectively. Specifically, TyG index [3.60, (1.42-9.14)] and blood glucose [1.01, (1.00-1.01)] concentration higher than the threshold values was positively associated with SNHL risk. Genetically determined triglyceride levels demonstrated a causal impact on SNHL (OR = 1.092, p = 8.006 × 10−4). In addition, blood glucose was found to have a protective effect on SNHL (OR = 0.886, p = 1.012 × 10−2).ConclusionsAn L-shaped association was identified among the TyG index, fasting blood glucose, and SNHL in the American population. TyG index of more than 9.07 and blood glucose of more than 94 mg/dL were significantly and positively associated with SNHL risk, respectively.

We introduce an innovative approach to address a significant challenge in interaction recognition, specifically the capture of correlation features between different interaction body parts. These features are often overlooked by traditional graph convolution networks commonly used in interaction recognition tasks. Our solution, the Merge-and-Split Graph Convolutional Network, takes a unique perspective, treating interaction recognition as a global problem. It leverages a Merge-and-Split Graph structure to effectively capture dependencies between interaction body parts. To extract the essential interaction features, we introduce the Merge-and-Split Graph Convolution module, which seamlessly combines the Merge-and-Split Graph with Graph Convolutional Networks. This fusion enables the extraction of rich semantic information between adjacent joint points. In addition, we introduce a Short-term Dependence module designed to extract joint and motion characteristics specific to each type of interaction. Furthermore, to extract correlation features between different hierarchical sets, we present the Hierarchical Guided Attention Module. This module plays a crucial role in highlighting the relevant hierarchical sets that contain essential interaction information. The effectiveness of our proposed model is demonstrated by achieving state-of-the-art performance on 2 widely recognized datasets, namely, the NTU60 and NTU120 interaction datasets. Our model’s efficacy is rigorously validated through extensive experiments, and we have made the code available for the research community at https://github.com/wanghq05/MS-GCN/.

Abstract The advancement of microfluidics has enabled numerous discoveries and technologies in life sciences. However, due to the lack of industry standards and configurability, the design and fabrication of microfluidic devices require highly skilled technicians. The diversity of microfluidic devices discourages biologists and chemists from applying this technique in their laboratories. Modular microfluidics, which integrates the standardized microfluidic modules into a whole, complex platform, brings the capability of configurability to conventional microfluidics. The exciting features, including portability, on-site deployability, and high customization motivate us to review the state-of-the-art modular microfluidics and discuss future perspectives. In this review, we first introduce the working mechanisms of the basic microfluidic modules and evaluate their feasibility as modular microfluidic components. Next, we explain the connection approaches among these microfluidic modules, and summarize the advantages of modular microfluidics over integrated microfluidics in biological applications. Finally, we discuss the challenge and future perspectives of modular microfluidics.

This paper presents a computational model for coast wave motions with multiple wave breakings. In the Boussinesq model, the wave breaking judgment method is combined with the wave recovery judgment condition, which stops the wave breaking process when triggered. The energy dissipation of wave breaking is corrected, and the dissipation of wave energy is maintained at about 10% during the wave recovery stage, so that the dissipation caused by the residual turbulent motion of wave breaking and the increase in wave height caused by the shallowing of waves due to the water bottom slope are offset. By comparing the calculation results with the experimental results, it is proved that this model can be used to calculate multiple wave breakings. This model is applied to discuss the influence of wave incident angle and wave period on wave height and longshore current and gives the distribution characteristics of wave height and longshore current under multiple wave breakings.

The most prevalent type of hemodialysis membrane is polysulfone (PSf). However, due to inadequate biocompatibility, it significantly compromises the safety of dialysis for patients. In this study, we modify the surface of the PSf membrane with 2,4-dihydroxybenzophenone (DBPh) groups to serve as anchoring sites during UV irradiation. Subsequently, a tailored sulfonated dihydroxy propyl chitosan (SDHPCS) is grafted onto the modified PSf membrane to compensate for the deficiencies in hydrophilic additives. The modified PSf membrane exhibits outstanding hydrophilicity and stability, as demonstrated by its characterization and evaluation. This paper focuses on investigating the interaction between platelet membrane formation, protein adsorption, and anticoagulant activity. The results show that the modified PSf membrane exhibits remarkable enhancement in surface hydrophilicity, leading to a significant reduction in protein and platelet adsorption as well as adhesion.

Sediment erosion around submarine pipelines is a popular topic, widely investigated in both ocean and submarine-pipeline engineering. In this paper, the incompressible smoothed-particle hydrodynamics (ISPH) method is modified for simulation of local scouring process around the submarine pipeline under the action of unidirectional flow. The erosion model is based on the Clear Water Particle–Turbid Water Particle–Critical Shear Stress (CWP-TWP-CSS) concept, and a sand–water two-phase model is proposed to deal with the sediment-entrained flow. The results of the numerical simulation are compared with the experimental data to verify the accuracy and applicability of the numerical model. The scouring process around the pipeline is investigated under different conditions, i.e., pipeline diameters, gap ratios, and flow velocities. The ISPH model is further used to study the flow characteristics of the scour pits around the submarine pipeline and the influence of the vortices on the maximum scour depth, to provide a theoretical basis for the stability design of submarine pipelines.

This study adopted the method of “exchanging space for time” and set up three experimental groups based on the shape, degree of damage, and degree of humification of the litter, namely the undecomposed layer, the semi-decomposed layer, and the decomposed layer. Using typical slopes of arbor and bamboo forests in the Pi River Basin as the research object, from October 2021 to December 2022, the soil carbon release flux was measured by using a closed static chamber gas chromatography method to reveal the carbon release law at the soil–air interface during the decomposition process of litter and quantitatively characterize the dynamic impact of the litter decomposition process on soil carbon release flux. Results showed that soil methane flux remained negative (sink) while soil carbon dioxide flux was positive (source) in both litter-covered and bare soil conditions. The methane and carbon dioxide release from soil was positively correlated with and significantly influenced by environmental factors such as soil moisture content and temperature. The methane release flux from soil showed a linear fitting relationship with soil moisture content and temperature, while the carbon dioxide release flux from soil was more in line with the exponential fitting relationship with soil moisture content and temperature. However, there were significant differences in the roles of various factors under different types of litter.

To improve the simulation performance of the RegCM4 model in climate simulations over the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), it is essential to determine the optimal cumulus convection and land surface process schemes from the numerous physical parameterization options within RegCM4. In this study, we selected five cumulus convection schemes (Kuo, Grell, Emanuel, Tiedtke, and Kain–Fritsch) and three land surface process schemes (BATS, CLM3.5, and CLM4.5) to configure 72 mixed schemes. Four years of short-term simulations (1990–1993) with a horizontal resolution of 50 km were conducted using ERA-Interim as the initial and boundary conditions for the 72 schemes. The climate simulation performance of all schemes in the YRB was comprehensively evaluated using a multi-criteria scoring approach. The results indicate that among the selected cumulus convection schemes, the Kain–Fritsch scheme, applied to both ocean and land, demonstrates optimal performance in simulating precipitation over the YRB, with spatial correlation coefficients between simulated and observed annual precipitation around 0.3. Compared to the Community Land Models (CLM3.5 and CLM4.5), BATS exhibits superior capabilities in reproducing the temperature features of the region, with spatial correlation coefficients between simulated and observed values typically exceeding 0.99 and standard deviations within 1.25 °C. Under the optimal KF scheme, the simulated soil moisture in the YRB using CLMs is notably drier, ranging from −7.79 to −8.39 kg/m2, compared to that achieved with BATS. The findings provide a localized reference for the parameterization schemes of RegCM4 in the YRB.

CD36 is a transmembrane glycoprotein that binds to a wide range of ligands, including fatty acids (FAs), cholesterol, thrombospondin-1 (TSP-1) and thrombospondin-2 (TSP-2), and plays an important role in lipid metabolism, immune response, and angiogenesis. Recent studies have highlighted the role of CD36 in mediating lipid uptake by tumor-associated immune cells and in promoting tumor cell progression. In cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), CD36 regulates lipid uptake and matrix protein production to promote tumor proliferation. In addition, CD36 can promote tumor cell adhesion to the extracellular matrix (ECM) and induce epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT). In terms of tumor angiogenesis, CD36 binding to TSP-1 and TSP-2 can both inhibit tumor angiogenesis and promote tumor migration and invasion. CD36 can promote tumor angiogenesis through vascular mimicry (VM). Overall, we found that CD36 exhibits diverse functions in tumors. Here, we summarize the recent research findings highlighting the novel roles of CD36 in the context of tumors.

Study region: The Yiluo River Basin between the Sanmenxia Dam and the Huayuankou Station of the Yellow River basin. Study focus: The current research is designed to spatially identify different driving factors' contributions to natural runoff variation. The Water and Energy Transfer Process model was used to simulate the runoff of 2044 sub-basins. Based on this, trends of runoff variation were analyzed, and then, the mutation year of runoff variation in each sub-basin was detected. Moreover, the contribution rate of climatic variation and anthropogenic factors on runoff change in each sub-basin was quantified. New hydrological insights for the region: The annual natural runoff in 90.66% of sub-basins and the flood-season (May to October) natural runoff in 45.99% of sub-basins showed declining trends. And the mutation year of runoff change mostly occurred in the 1970 s and 1980 s. The natural runoff change was primarily affected by climatic variation. The contribution rate of climate to the annual and flood-season natural runoff was 69.32% and 71.51%, respectively. While the contribution of man-made activities to the annual and the flood-season natural runoff was 30.68% and 28.49%, respectively, and the high-impact areas were largely distributed downstream. The research provides scientific support for developing and regulating water and land resources in the Yiluo River Basin.

BackgroundUpper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC) is the most common urothelial malignancy in the renal pelvis or ureter. Renal pelvic carcinoma accounts for 90% of all tumours in the renal pelvis, so the mass in the renal pelvis is usually considered a UTUC. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in the renal pelvis, calyces and upper ureter is extremely rare, especially MiT family translocation RCC, which makes this case even more uncommon.Case presentationWe report the case of a 54-year-old man had intermittent painless gross haematuria with occasional blood clots and urodynia for 2 years. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan showed an enlarged left kidney, and a soft tissue mass was seen in the renal pelvis, calyces and upper ureter. The patient’s urine-based cytology was positive three times. Due to the severity of the upper ureteral lumen stenosis, we did not perform pathological biopsy during ureteroscopy. In the current case, clinical symptoms, imaging examinations, urine-based cytology, and ureteroscopy were combined to obtain a preoperative diagnosis of UTUC. Therefore, robot-assisted laparoscopic left radical nephroureterectomy and retroperitoneal lymphadenectomy were performed. Unexpectedly, the patient was pathologically diagnosed with MiT family translocation RCC after surgery. The surgery was uneventful. There was no intestinal tube injury or other complications perioperatively. The postoperative follow-up was satisfactory.ConclusionMiT family translocation RCC in the renal pelvis, calyces and upper ureter is extremely rare, and can be easily confused with UTUC, resulting in the expansion of surgical scope. Preoperative ureteroscopy and biopsy or tumour punch biopsy should be used to obtain accurate pathology as far as possible, and the selection of correct surgical method is conducive to a good prognosis for patients.

BackgroundEx vivo liver resection and autotransplantation (ELRAT) may provide an opportunity for R0 resection of conventionally unresectable hepatobiliary cancers and hepatic metastases. To date, few studies of the surgery for malignant tumors have been conducted and there are no known reports of in vivo partial hepatectomy followed by ELRAT (IPH-ELRAT) for malignant tumors.MethodsBetween December 2021 and November 2022, ten patients with malignant hepatobiliary primary cancers or hepatic metastases underwent ELRAT at our institution. We shared the surgical skills and postoperative prognoses of these patients were assessed.ResultsThe types of tumors were biliary tract cancer (BTC, n=8), hepatic metastasis of colonic carcinoma (n=1), and hepatic metastasis of small-bowel stromal tumor (n=1). Five patients underwent in vivo total hepatectomy followed by ex vivo liver resection and autotransplantation (ITH-ELRAT), The other five received in vivo partial hepatectomy followed by ex vivo liver resection and autotransplantation (IPH-ELRAT). Four patients underwent inferior vena cava replacement using artificial blood vessels. The survival rate of all ten patients one month after surgery was 100%. Nine patients (90%) are currently alive, with a median follow-up of 8.5 months (range 6–16.5 months). To date, seven of the nine surviving patients have had no cancer recurrence, including six with BTC.ConclusionsWe report the world first five cases that received IPH-ELRAT for malignancies. We also demonstrated relatively favorable outcomes in patients who underwent ELRAT. ELRAT may be a recommendable surgical option for selected patients with conventionally unresectable hepatobiliary malignant tumors.

Hydropower operations significantly alter the natural hydrological conditions of rivers, exerting adverse effects on riverine ecosystems. Accurate identification of fish habitats under hydropower operation and maintaining suitable ecological flow are crucial for riverine ecological conservation and water resource management. Coreius guichenoti was selected as the target species and the Yibin reach of the downstream Jinsha River was selected as the studied river reach. Subsequently, Weighted Usable Area (WUA) and Habitat Connectivity Index (HCI) were employed to comparatively analyze the habitat quantity and quality before and after the construction and operation of the Xiangjiaba hydropower station, namely the natural period (1991–2005), construction period (2006–2014), and operation period (2015–2020). Finally, correlations between WUA, HCI, and flow were established to determine the optimal ecological flow corresponding to optimal fish habitats. The results indicate that the average WUA and HCI during the construction period are similar to the natural period. In comparison to the natural period, the average WUA decreases by 9.2%, and the average HCI decreases by 0.05 during the operation period. It is determined that the habitat conditions are optimal when the flow is between 3000 and 5000 m3/s. After further refining the flow scenarios, the suitable ecological flow is determined to be 3500 m3/s. This study can provide a scientific basis for the water resources management in the Jinsha River and contribute to the field of riverine ecological conservation and restoration.

Rip currents are fast offshore currents generated during the breaking process of waves propagating nearshore, posing a potential life safety threat to coastal bathers. This study utilizes a Boussinesq phase-resolving model to investigate the formation mechanism of rip currents at Dadonghai Beach, based on its actual topography, and explores the characteristics of rip current formation under various wave conditions, with an emphasis on analyzing vortices, the mean water level and the spatial distribution of average velocity. The results indicate that rip current formation is significantly influenced by wave height and period. The increase in wave height and period results in more intense rip currents and higher water level fluctuations on arc-shaped beaches and on both sides of the bay, leading to complex vortex distributions. An increase in the angle of wave incidence hinders rip current formation in arc-shaped beach areas but is favorable to the generation of deflection rips on both sides of the bay. Furthermore, an increase in bottom friction inhibits rip current formation. When the water depth decreases in the channels, rip currents transition into longshore currents. The findings of this research offer valuable scientific insights into the formation mechanisms of rip currents and contribute to their prediction and prevention.

Autophagy is a highly conserved cellular degradation and recycling process in mammalian cells, which is comprised of three main types: microautophagy, macroautophagy, and chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA). Autophagy plays a housekeeping role in maintaining cellular homeostasis and therefore can cause many human diseases if it is dysregulated. Our recent paper reported that ULK1 (unc-51 like autophagy activating kinase 1) is glycosylated at S409/S410 and further revealed the biochemical effect in stabilizing this protein. The solute-linked carrier 26 (SLC26) protein family is comprised of multifunctional transporters of substrates that include oxalate, sulphate, and chloride. Disorders of oxalate homeostasis cause hyperoxalemia and hyperoxaluria, leading to urinary calcium oxalate precipitation and urolithogenesis. SLC26 proteins are aberrantly expressed during kidney stone formation, and consequently may present therapeutic targets. SLC26 protein inhibitors are in preclinical development. In this review, we integrate the findings of recent reports with clinical data to highlight the role of SLC26 proteins in oxalate metabolism during urolithogenesis, and discuss limitations of current studies and potential directions for future research.

Abstract Background Liquid metal (LM) can be integrated into microfluidic channel, bringing new functionalities of microfluidics and opening a new window for soft microfluidic electronics, due to the superior advantages of the conductivity and deformability of LMs. However, patterning the LMs into microfluidic channels requires either selective surface wetting or complex fabrication process. Results In this work, we develop a method to pattern the LMs onto the soft elastomer via soft lithographic process for fabrication of soft microfluidic sensors without the surface modification, bulky facilities, and complicated processes. The combination of the interfacial hydrogen bond and surface tension enables the LM patterns transfer to the soft elastomer. The transferred LM patterns with an ellipse-like cross-section further improve the stability under the mechanical deformation. Three proof-of-concept experiments were conducted to demonstrate the utilization of this method for development of thermochromic sensors, self-powered capacity sensors and flexible biosensor for glucose detection. Conclusions In summary, the proposed method offers a new patterning method to obtain soft microfluidic sensors and brings new possibilities for microfluidics-related wearable devices. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a cutting-edge technique for highly sensitive analysis of chemicals and molecules. Traditional SERS-active nanostructures are constructed on rigid substrates where the nanogaps providing hot-spots of Raman signals are fixed, and sample loading is unsatisfactory due to the unconformable attachment of substrates on irregular sample surfaces. A flexible SERS substrate enables conformable sample loading and, thus, highly sensitive Raman detection but still with limited detection capabilities. Stretchable SERS substrates with flexible sample loading structures and controllable hot-spot size provide a new strategy for improving the sample loading efficiency and SERS detection sensitivity. This review summarizes and discusses recent development and applications of the newly conceptual stretchable SERS substrates. A roadmap of the development of SERS substrates is reviewed, and fabrication techniques of stretchable SERS substrates are summarized, followed by an exhibition of the applications of these stretchable SERS substrates. Finally, challenges and perspectives of the stretchable SERS substrates are presented. This review provides an overview of the development of SERS substrates and sheds light on the design, fabrication, and application of stretchable SERS systems.

Abstract In this study, we demonstrated the label-free continuous separation and enrichment of Bacillus subtilis populations based on length using viscoelastic microfluidics. B. subtilis, a gram-positive, rod-shaped bacterium, has been widely used as a model organism and an industrial workhorse. B. subtilis can be arranged in different morphological forms, such as single rods, chains, and clumps, which reflect differences in cell types, phases of growth, genetic variation, and changing environmental factors. The ability to prepare B. subtilis populations with a uniform length is important for basic biological studies and efficient industrial applications. Here, we systematically investigated how flow rate ratio, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) concentration, and channel length affected the length-based separation of B. subtilis cells. The lateral positions of B. subtilis cells with varying morphologies in a straight rectangular microchannel were found to be dependent on cell length under the co-flow of viscoelastic and Newtonian fluids. Finally, we evaluated the ability of the viscoelastic microfluidic device to separate the two groups of B. subtilis cells by length (i.e., 1–5 μm and >5 μm) in terms of extraction purity (EP), extraction yield (EY), and enrichment factor (EF) and confirmed that the device could separate heterogeneous populations of bacteria using elasto-inertial effects.

BackgroundRecently, in many Asian centers, laparoscopic anatomical liver resection (LALR) using the indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging technique has been increasingly applied in resecting hepatocellular carcinoma, even in colorectal liver metastases. However, LALR techniques have not been fully standardized, especially in right superior segments. Due to the anatomical position, prevailing positive staining using a PTCD (percutaneous transhepatic cholangial drainage) needle was superior to negative staining in right superior segments hepatectomy, while it was difficult to manipulate. Herein, we design a novel method of ICG-positive staining for LALR of right superior segments.MethodsBetween April 2021 and October 2022, we retrospectively studied patients in our institute who underwent LALR of right superior segments using a novel method of ICG-positive staining, which comprised a customized puncture needle and an adaptor. Compared to the PTCD needle, the customized needle was not limited by the abdominal wall and could be punctured from the liver dorsal surface, which was more flexible to manipulate. The adapter was attached to the guide hole of the laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS) probe to ensure the precise puncture path of the needle. Guided by preoperative three-dimensional (3D) simulation and intraoperative laparoscopic ultrasound imaging, we punctured the transhepatic needle into the target portal vein through the adaptor and then slowly injected 5-10 ml of 0.025 mg/ml ICG solution into the vessel. LALR can be guided by the demarcation line under fluorescence imaging after injection. Demographic, procedural and postoperative data were collected and analyzed.ResultsIn this study, 21 patients underwent LALR of the right superior segments with ICG fluorescence-positive staining, and the procedures had a success rate of 71.4%. The average staining time was 13.0 ± 6.4 min, the operative time was 230.4 ± 71.7 min, R0 resection was 100%, the postoperative hospital stay was 7.1 ± 2.4 days, and no severe puncture complications occurred.ConclusionsThe novel customized puncture needle approach seems to be feasible and safe for ICG-positive staining in LALR of right superior segments, with a high success rate and a short staining time.

BackgroundSitus inversus totalis (SIT) is a congenital condition wherein organs in abdominal or thoracic cavity are mirrored from their normal positions. Abdominal cocoon, is a rare disease of unknown aetiology that is characterised by total or partial small intestine encapsulation by a compact fibrocollagenous membrane. Aside from having two extremely rare conditions (SIT and Abdominal cocoon), our patient developed renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which makes this case even more uncommon.Case PresentationWe report the case of a 64-year-old man who was admitted to our hospital with an extremely rare case of localized RCC in the left kidney complicated with SIT and abdominal cocoon. Computer tomography urography (CTU) and angiography (CTA) showed that the patient was confirmed as having SIT, for the space-occupying lesion in the left kidney, clear cell RCC (ccRCC) was considered, the lesion in the right kidney was probably cystic. We diagnosed our patient as having a cT1aN0M0 left RCC, and the RENAL score was 7x. With partial nephrectomy (PN) being the preferred treatment approach, robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (RALPN) was performed after obtaining informed consent. After insertion of the laparoscope, adhesions were observed between the entire colon and the anterior abdominal wall. Then, abdominal cocoon was diagnosed. The surgery was uneventful, and the tumour was resected successfully while preserving the tumour capsule. No intestinal injury or any other complication occurred in the intraoperative or postoperative, and the patient recovered well after the operation.ConclusionPN is an extremely challenging procedure in patients with SIT and abdominal cocoon. The da Vinci Xi surgical system and thorough preoperative assessment allowed the surgeon to overcome stereotyping, visual inversion, and successfully perform PN in a patient with SIT and abdominal cocoon without increasing the risk of complications and preserving as much renal function as possible. Considering the satisfactory outcomes, this report may hopefully provide a practical reference for the treatment of RCC in patients with other special conditions.

There are so many non-Newtonian fluids in our daily life, such as milk, blood, cytoplasm, and mucus, most of which are viscoelastic heterogeneous liquid containing cells, inorganic ion, metabolites, and hormones. In microfluidic microparticle-manipulating applications, the target particles are practically distributed within the biological fluids like blood and urine. The viscoelasticity of biological fluid is constantly ignored for simplicity especially when the fluid is substantially diluted and contains rather complex components. However, even the fluid’s ultraweak viscoelasticity actually affects the microparticle migration and may bring a completely different behavior compared with the Newtonian fluids. As a result, a robust and easy operated on-chip viscoelasticity sensor is potential and desired in many research and industrial fields, including assay sample preparation, clinical diagnostics, and on-chip sensor. In this work, we employed stable non-Newtonian fluid–polyethylene oxide (PEO) solutions with various concentrations to investigate and calibrate effects of the weak fluidic viscoelasticity on microparticle behaviors in a double-layered microfluidic channel. An analogy-based database of fluidic patterns for viscoelasticity sensing and relaxation time measurement was established. Then, we tested different biological fluids including blood plasma and fetal bovine serum and proved that they exhibited similar viscoelasticity effects to the PEO solutions with the corresponding concentration, which reached a good agreement with available results by references. The detection limitation of relaxation time can reach 1 ms. It promised a robust and integrated on-chip microfluidic viscoelasticity sensor for different biological fluids without complicated calculations.

High citations most often characterize quality research that reflects the foci of the discipline. This study aims to spotlight the most recent hot topics and the trends looming from the highly cited papers (HCPs) in Web of Science category of linguistics and language & linguistics with bibliometric analysis. The bibliometric information of the 143 HCPs based on Essential Citation Indicators was retrieved and used to identify and analyze influential contributors at the levels of journals, authors, and countries. The most frequently explored topics were identified by corpus analysis and manual checking. The retrieved topics can be grouped into five general categories: multilingual-related, language teaching, and learning related, psycho/pathological/cognitive linguistics-related, methods and tools-related, and others. Topics such as bi/multilingual(ism), translanguaging, language/writing development, models, emotions, foreign language enjoyment (FLE), cognition, anxiety are among the most frequently explored. Multilingual and positive trends are discerned from the investigated HCPs. The findings inform linguistic researchers of the publication characteristics of the HCPs in the linguistics field and help them pinpoint the research trends and directions to exert their efforts in future studies.

Climatic factors are the main drivers that change net primary productivity (NPP). We chose the Yiluo River Basin as the study area to investigate the response of NPP to climatic factors in the Yellow River’s middle reaches. The temporal and spatial distribution of net primary productivity and the trend change of slope in the basin from 2000 to 2020 are analyzed. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between the NPP and climatic factors (precipitation and temperature) and the time-lag effect. The results show that 1) the annual average NPP in the basin is 556.4 gC/m2/a, the maximum value that occurred in 2019. Most of the NPP’s mutation points in the basin’s forest appeared in 2004, while the NPP’s mutation points in arable land mostly appeared in 2008 and 2009. 2) The slope trend analysis result of NPP from 2000 to 2020 shows that the NPP in 67.88% of the basin shows a significant increasing trend, 3.8% of the basin shows a significant decrease, and the other area show no significant change. 3) The correlation analysis between NPP and climatic factors shows a positive correlation between precipitation and NPP in 62.3% of the basin and a positive correlation between air temperature and NPP in 62.5%. The response of NPP to precipitation and temperature in the basin has different degrees of a time-lag effect. The NPP has a time-lag effect on precipitation in 44.8% of the basin, and its mean lag time is 8 days. NPP has a time-lag effect on temperature in 55.7% of the basin, and its mean lag time is 1 day. This study is beneficial to understanding the influence of climatic factor change on vegetation activities in the Yiluo River Basin. Our study illustrates the significance of time lag in analyzing the relationship between NPP and climatic factors. Furthermore, it provides support for scientific vegetation regulation and allocation, as well as adaptation to climate change in areas similar to the Loess Plateau, based on the lag time distribution corresponding to different vegetation types in different regions of the Yiluo River Basin. After that, these areas’ water resources will be fully utilized by vegetation, and ecological restoration could be accelerated.

Superficial angiomyxoma (SA) is a rare benign tumor that occurs either in the superficial dermis or subcutaneously. It often occurs in the trunk, neck, or limbs, and grows slowly. The diameter of the tumor is usually less than 5 cm. A giant SA of the perineum in men is very rare. We detailed the diagnosis and treatment of male patients with perineal SA and performed a literature review. We report a case of a 42-year-old male patient. He was admitted to hospital with a perineal mass found more than 1 year previously. A pelvic contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan in our hospital suggests that a round slightly hypointense foci of about 6.0 cm × 8.6 cm × 4.5 cm in size with still clear borders was seen below the penile corpus cavernosum in the perineum. We performed a perineal mass excision under continuous epidural anesthesia. A postoperative pathology report diagnosed perineal SA. There was no recurrence at follow-up for 27 months up to May 2022. Perineal SA is rare and should be combined with patient history and imaging to ensure complete excision of the mass margins. Adherence to long-term postoperative follow-up is the key to curing this case.

PurposeTo evaluate the relationship between endoscopic ureteral inflammatory edema (UIE) and ureteral lumen, formulate a preliminary grading method for the severity of UIE, and analyze the impact of different grades of UIE on endoscopic ureteral calculi surgery and prognosis.Materials and methodsWe retrospectively analyzed 185 patients who underwent ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) for upper urinary tract stones between January 2021 and November 2021. The UIE grade and lumen conditions were assessed by endoscopic observation. Abstract Background This study aimed to establish a radiomics-based nomogram for predicting severe (grade B or C) post-hepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) in patients with huge (≥ 10 cm) hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods One hundred eighty-six patients with huge HCC (training dataset, n = 131 and test dataset, n = 55) that underwent curative hepatic resection were included in this study. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) approach was applied to develop a radiomics signature for grade B or C PHLF prediction using the training dataset. A multivariable logistic regression model was used by incorporating radiomics signature and other clinical predictors to establish a radiomics nomogram. Decision tree analysis was performed to stratify the risk for severe PHLF. Results The radiomics signature consisting of nine features predicted severe PHLF with AUCs of 0.766 and 0.745 for the training and test datasets. The radiomics nomogram was generated by integrating the radiomics signature, the extent of resection and the model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score. The nomogram exhibited satisfactory discrimination ability, with AUCs of 0.842 and 0.863 for the training and test datasets, respectively. Based on decision tree analysis, patients were divided into three risk classes: low-risk patients with radiomics score < -0.247 and MELD score < 10 or radiomics score ≥ − 0.247 but underwent partial resections; intermediate-risk patients with radiomics score < − 0.247 but MELD score ≥10; high-risk patients with radiomics score ≥ − 0.247 and underwent extended resections. Conclusions The radiomics nomogram could predict severe PHLF in huge HCC patients. A decision tree may be useful in surgical decision-making for huge HCC hepatectomy.

This paper describes a method to fabricate the 3D microfluidic channel using the free-standing, phase-change gallium mold. Three approaches to prepare the free-standing gallium molds are described. The solid metal framework is strong enough to stand against the gravity. After casting, the embedded gallium molds are melted from solid to liquid and then extracted from the encasing elastomer to form the 3D microfluidic channel due to the phase change property. Since this method is compatible with many encasing materials (e.g., elastomers, gels, resins, ceramics), the encasing materials will bring novel functionalities to the microfluidic chip. Two proof-of-concept experiments have been demonstrated. Firstly, a soft, sticky, on-skin microfluidic cooler is developed based on this method to deliver the focused, minimal invasive cooling power at arbitrary skins of human body with temperature control. Secondly, an ultra-stretchable viscoelastic microchannel with the ultra-soft base is fabricated to continuously tune the viscoelastic particle focusing with a large dynamic range. This proposed technique suggests the new possibilities for the development of lab-on-a-chip applications.

Objective To study how does reduction of blood flow perfusion regulates cytoskeleton rearrangement and its relationship with inflammation during atherosclerosis (AS). Methods The carotid artery stenosis model was established by carotid cannula in New Zealand rabbits. The normal animals were set as control group, and animals in high-fat diet were set as high-fat group. The localization and expression of vascular inflammation-related proteins MCP-1, planar cell polarity signaling pathway-related proteins DVL2 and VANGL2, and cytoskeletal proteins BBS8 and γ-tubulin were determined by immunohistochemistry staining,qPCR and Western blot. Results The cannula group and high-fat group but not control group showed intimal hyperplasia.The localizations of DVL2 and VANGL2 were found mainly at the endovascular hyperplasia in the cannula group, while the positive localizations of them were hardly found in the other two groups. Moreover, the expressions of the seproteins have been significantly up-regulated in the cannula group as compared to that in the control or high-fat group. Conclusions Reduction of blood flow perfusion is involved in the early inflammation of AS by increasing expression of MCP-1, and regulates the BBS8 and γ-tubulin during the rearrangement of microtubule cytoskeleton.
