Large-scale optimization problems are prevalent in several fields, including engineering, finance, and logistics. However, most optimization problems cannot be efficiently encoded onto a physical system because the existing quantum samplers have too few qubits. Another typical limiting factor is that the optimization constraints are not compatible with the native cost Hamiltonian. This work presents a new approach to address these challenges. We introduce the adversarial quantum autoencoder model (AQAM) that can be used to map large-scale optimization problems onto existing quantum samplers while simultaneously optimizing the problem through latent quantum-enhanced Boltzmann sampling. We demonstrate the AQAM on a neutral atom sampler, and showcase the model by optimizing 64px by 64px unit cells that represent a broad-angle filter metasurface applicable to improving the coherence of neutral atom devices. Using 12-atom simulations, we demonstrate that the AQAM achieves a lower Renyi divergence and a larger spectral gap when compared to classical Markov Chain Monte Carlo samplers. Quantum machine learning has gained considerable attention as quantum technology advances, presenting a promising approach for efficiently learning complex data patterns. Despite this promise, most contemporary quantum methods require significant resources for variational parameter optimization and face issues with vanishing gradients, leading to experiments that are either limited in scale or lack potential for quantum advantage. To address this, we develop a general-purpose, gradient-free, and scalable quantum reservoir learning algorithm that harnesses the quantum dynamics of neutral-atom analog quantum computers to process data. We experimentally implement the algorithm, achieving competitive performance across various categories of machine learning tasks, including binary and multi-class classification, as well as timeseries prediction. Effective and improving learning is observed with increasing system sizes of up to 108 qubits, demonstrating the largest quantum machine learning experiment to date. We further observe comparative quantum kernel advantage in learning tasks by constructing synthetic datasets based on the geometric differences between generated quantum and classical data kernels. Our findings demonstrate the potential of utilizing classically intractable quantum correlations for effective machine learning. Fast, reliable logical operations are essential for the realization of useful quantum computers, as they are required to implement practical quantum algorithms at large scale. By redundantly encoding logical qubits into many physical qubits and using syndrome measurements to detect and subsequently correct errors, one can achieve very low logical error rates. However, for most practical quantum error correcting (QEC) codes such as the surface code, it is generally believed that due to syndrome extraction errors, multiple extraction rounds -- on the order of the code distance d -- are required for fault-tolerant computation. Here, we show that contrary to this common belief, fault-tolerant logical operations can be performed with constant time overhead for a broad class of QEC codes, including the surface code with magic state inputs and feed-forward operations, to achieve "algorithmic fault tolerance". Through the combination of transversal operations and novel strategies for correlated decoding, despite only having access to partial syndrome information, we prove that the deviation from the ideal measurement result distribution can be made exponentially small in the code distance. We supplement this proof with circuit-level simulations in a range of relevant settings, demonstrating the fault tolerance and competitive performance of our approach. Our work sheds new light on the theory of fault tolerance, potentially reducing the space-time cost of practical fault-tolerant quantum computation by orders of magnitude.

Metastable false vacuum states arise in a range of quantum systems and can be observed in various dynamical scenarios, including decay, bubble nucleation, and long-lived oscillations. False vacuum phenomenology has been examined in quantum many-body systems, notably in 1D ferromagnetic Ising spin systems and superfluids. In this paper, we study long-lived oscillations of false and true vacuum states in 1D antiferromagnetic neutral atom chains with long-range Rydberg interactions. We use a staggered local detuning field to achieve confinement. Using theoretical and numerical models, we identify novel spectral signatures of quasiparticle oscillations distinct to antiferromagnetic neutral atom systems and interpret them using a classical energy model of deconfinement from Rydberg tails. Finally, we evaluate the experimental accessibility of our proposed setup on current neutral-atom platforms and discuss experimental feasibility and constraints., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

False vacuum decay and nucleation offer the opportunity to study non-equilibrium dynamical phenomena in quantum many-body systems with confinement. Recent work has examined false vacuum decay in 1D ferromagnetic Ising spins and superfluids. In this paper, we study false vacuum nucleation dynamics in 1D antiferromagnetic neutral atom chains with Rydberg interactions, using both numerical simulations and analytic modeling. We apply a staggered local detuning field to generate the false and true vacuum states. Our efforts focus on two dynamical regimes: decay and annealing. In the first, we corroborate the phenomenological decay rate scaling and determine the associated parameter range for the decay process; in the second, we uncover and elucidate a procedure to anneal the false vacuum from the initial to the final system, with intermediate nucleation events. We further propose experimental protocols to prepare the required states and perform quenches on near-term neutral atom quantum simulators, examining the experimental feasibility of our proposed setup and parameter regime., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

Combinatorial optimization is a challenging problem applicable in a wide range of fields from logistics to finance. Recently, quantum computing has been used to attempt to solve these problems using a range of algorithms, including parameterized quantum circuits, adiabatic protocols, and quantum annealing. These solutions typically have several challenges: 1) there is little to no performance gain over classical methods, 2) not all constraints and objectives may be efficiently encoded in the quantum ansatz, and 3) the solution domain of the objective function may not be the same as the bit strings of measurement outcomes. This work presents "non-native hybrid algorithms" (NNHA): a framework to overcome these challenges by integrating quantum and classical resources with a hybrid approach. By designing non-native quantum variational ansatzes that inherit some but not all problem structure, measurement outcomes from the quantum computer can act as a resource to be used by classical routines to indirectly compute optimal solutions, partially overcoming the challenges of contemporary quantum optimization approaches. These methods are demonstrated using a publicly available neutral-atom quantum computer on two simple problems of Max $k$-Cut and maximum independent set. We find improvements in solution quality when comparing the hybrid algorithm to its ``no quantum" version, a demonstration of a "comparative advantage"., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The skeletal region is one of the common sites of metastatic spread of cancer in the breast and prostate. CT is routinely used to measure the size of lesions in the bones. However, they can be difficult to spot due to the wide variations in their sizes, shapes, and appearances. Precise localization of such lesions would enable reliable tracking of interval changes (growth, shrinkage, or unchanged status). To that end, an automated technique to detect bone lesions is highly desirable. In this pilot work, we developed a pipeline to detect bone lesions (lytic, blastic, and mixed) in CT volumes via a proxy segmentation task. First, we used the bone lesions that were prospectively marked by radiologists in a few 2D slices of CT volumes and converted them into weak 3D segmentation masks. Then, we trained a 3D full-resolution nnUNet model using these weak 3D annotations to segment the lesions and thereby detected them. Our automated method detected bone lesions in CT with a precision of 96.7% and recall of 47.3% despite the use of incomplete and partial training data. We propose hybrid digital-analog learning algorithms on Rydberg atom arrays, combining the potentially practical utility and near-term realizability of quantum learning with the rapidly scaling architectures of neutral atoms. Our construction requires only single-qubit operations in the digital setting and global driving according to the Rydberg Hamiltonian in the analog setting. We perform a comprehensive numerical study of our algorithm on both classical and quantum data, given respectively by handwritten digit classification and unsupervised quantum phase boundary learning. We show in the two representative problems that digital-analog learning is not only feasible in the near term, but also requires shorter circuit depths and is more robust to realistic error models as compared to digital learning schemes. Classical simulation of quantum systems plays an important role in the study of many-body phenomena and in the benchmarking and verification of quantum technologies. Exact simulation is often limited to small systems because the dimension of the Hilbert space increases exponentially with the size of the system. For systems that possess a high degree of symmetry, however, classical simulation can reach much larger sizes. Here, we consider an ensemble of strongly interacting atoms with permutation symmetry, enabling the simulation of dynamics of hundreds of atoms at arbitrarily long evolution times. The system is realized by an ensemble of three-level atoms, where one of the levels corresponds to a highly excited Rydberg state. In the limit of all-to-all Rydberg blockade, the Hamiltonian is invariant under permutation of the atoms. Using techniques from representation theory, we construct a block-diagonal form of the Hamiltonian, where the size of the largest block increases only linearly with the system size. We apply this formalism to derive efficient pulse sequences to prepare arbitrary permutation-invariant quantum states. Moreover, we study the quantum dynamics following a quench, uncovering a parameter regime in which the system thermalizes slowly and exhibits pronounced revivals. Our results create new opportunities for the experimental and theoretical study of large interacting and nonintegrable quantum systems.

The neutral-atom quantum computer "Aquila" is QuEra's latest device available through the Braket cloud service on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Aquila is a "field-programmable qubit array" (FPQA) operated as an analog Hamiltonian simulator on a user-configurable architecture, executing programmable coherent quantum dynamics on up to 256 neutral-atom qubits. This whitepaper serves as an overview of Aquila and its capabilities: how it works under the hood, key performance benchmarks, and examples that demonstrate some quintessential applications. This includes an overview of neutral-atom quantum computing, as well as five examples of increasing complexity from single-qubit dynamics to combinatorial optimization, implemented on Aquila. This whitepaper is intended for readers who are interested in learning more about neutral-atom quantum computing, as a guide for those who are ready to start using Aquila, and as a reference point for its performance as an analog quantum computer.

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated their significant potential to be applied for addressing various application tasks. However, traditional recommender systems continue to face great challenges such as poor interactivity and explainability, which actually also hinder their broad deployment in real-world systems. To address these limitations, this paper proposes a novel paradigm called Chat-Rec (ChatGPT Augmented Recommender System) that innovatively augments LLMs for building conversational recommender systems by converting user profiles and historical interactions into prompts. Chat-Rec is demonstrated to be effective in learning user preferences and establishing connections between users and products through in-context learning, which also makes the recommendation process more interactive and explainable. What's more, within the Chat-Rec framework, user's preferences can transfer to different products for cross-domain recommendations, and prompt-based injection of information into LLMs can also handle the cold-start scenarios with new items. In our experiments, Chat-Rec effectively improve the results of top-k recommendations and performs better in zero-shot rating prediction task. Chat-Rec offers a novel approach to improving recommender systems and presents new practical scenarios for the implementation of AIGC (AI generated content) in recommender system studies.

Federated learning achieves joint training of deep models by connecting decentralized data sources, which can significantly mitigate the risk of privacy leakage. However, in a more general case, the distributions of labels among clients are different, called ``label distribution skew''. Directly applying conventional federated learning without consideration of label distribution skew issue significantly hurts the performance of the global model. To this end, we propose a novel federated learning method, named FedMGD, to alleviate the performance degradation caused by the label distribution skew issue. It introduces a global Generative Adversarial Network to model the global data distribution without access to local datasets, so the global model can be trained using the global information of data distribution without privacy leakage. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art on several public benchmarks. Quantum spin liquids are elusive but paradigmatic examples of strongly correlated quantum states that are characterized by long-range quantum entanglement. Recently, the direct signatures of a gapped topological $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid have been observed in a system of Rydberg atoms arrayed on the ruby lattice. Here, we illustrate the concrete realization of a fundamentally different class of spin liquids in a honeycomb array of Rydberg atoms. Exploring the quantum phase diagram of this system using both density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization simulations, several density-wave-ordered phases are characterized and their origins explained. More interestingly, in the regime where third-nearest-neighbor atoms lie within the Rydberg blockade radius, we find a novel ground state -- with an emergent $\mathrm{U}(1)\times \mathrm{U}(1)$ local symmetry -- formed from superpositions of classical {\it trimer} configurations on the dual triangular lattice. The fidelity of this trimer spin liquid state can be enhanced via dynamical preparation, which we explain by a Rydberg-blockade-based projection mechanism associated with the smooth turnoff of the laser drive. Finally, we discuss the robustness of the trimer spin liquid phase under realistic experimental parameters and demonstrate that our proposal can be readily implemented in current Rydberg atom quantum simulators., Comment: 11+11 pages, 7+12 figures

Programmable quantum systems based on Rydberg atom arrays have recently been used for hardware-efficient tests of quantum optimization algorithms [Ebadi et al., Science, 376, 1209 (2022)] with hundreds of qubits. In particular, the maximum independent set problem on so-called unit-disk graphs, was shown to be efficiently encodable in such a quantum system. Here, we extend the classes of problems that can be efficiently encoded in Rydberg arrays by constructing explicit mappings from a wide class of problems to maximum weighted independent set problems on unit-disk graphs, with at most a quadratic overhead in the number of qubits. We analyze several examples, including: maximum weighted independent set on graphs with arbitrary connectivity, quadratic unconstrained binary optimization problems with arbitrary or restricted connectivity, and integer factorization. Numerical simulations on small system sizes indicate that the adiabatic time scale for solving the mapped problems is strongly correlated with that of the original problems. Layout planning is centrally important in the field of architecture and urban design. Among the various basic units carrying urban functions, residential community plays a vital part for supporting human life. Therefore, the layout planning of residential community has always been of concern, and has attracted particular attention since the advent of deep learning that facilitates the automated layout generation and spatial pattern recognition. However, the research circles generally suffer from the insufficiency of residential community layout benchmark or high-quality datasets, which hampers the future exploration of data-driven methods for residential community layout planning. The lack of datasets is largely due to the difficulties of large-scale real-world residential data acquisition and long-term expert screening. In order to address the issues and advance a benchmark dataset for various intelligent spatial design and analysis applications in the development of smart city, we introduce Residential Community Layout Planning (ReCo) Dataset, which is the first and largest open-source vector dataset related to real-world community to date. ReCo Dataset is presented in multiple data formats with 37,646 residential community layout plans, covering 598,728 residential buildings with height information. ReCo can be conveniently adapted for residential community layout related urban design tasks, e.g., generative layout design, morphological pattern recognition and spatial evaluation. To validate the utility of ReCo in automated residential community layout planning, two Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) based generative models are further applied to the dataset. We expect ReCo Dataset to inspire more creative and practical work in intelligent design and beyond. We introduce a unified framework to compute the solution space properties of a broad class of combinatorial optimization problems. These properties include finding one of the optimum solutions, counting the number of solutions of a given size, and enumeration and sampling of solutions of a given size. Using the independent set problem as an example, we show how all these solution space properties can be computed in the unified approach of generic tensor networks. We demonstrate the versatility of this computational tool by applying it to several examples, including computing the entropy constant for hardcore lattice gases, studying the overlap gap properties, and analyzing the performance of quantum and classical algorithms for finding maximum independent sets., Comment: Github repo: https://github.com/QuEraComputing/GenericTensorNetworks.jl

Layered tellurides have been extensively studied as a platform for investigating the Fermi surface (FS) nesting-driven charge density wave (CDW) states. EuTe4, one of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) binary rare-earth tetratellurides CDW compounds, with unconventional hysteretic transition, is currently receiving much attention. Here, the CDW modulation vector, momentum and temperature dependence of CDW gaps in EuTe4 are investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Our results reveal that (i) a FS nesting vector q ~ 0.67 b* drives the formation of CDW state, (ii) a large anisotropic CDW gap is fully open in the whole FS, and maintains a considerable size even at 300 K, leading to appearance of semiconductor properties, (iii) an abnormal non-monotonic increase of CDW gap in magnitude as a function of temperature, (iv) an extra, larger gap opens at a higher binding energy due to the interaction between the different orbits of the main bands., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The newly discovered ternary chalcogenide superconductor Bi$_2$Rh$_3$Se$_2$ has attracted growing attention, which provides an opportunity to explore the interplay between charge density wave (CDW) order and superconductivity. However, whether the phase transition at 240 K can be attributed to CDW formation remains controversial. To help resolve the debate, we study the electronic structure study of Bi2Rh3Se2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments, with emphasis on the nature of its high-temperature phase transition at 240 K. Our measurements demonstrate that the phase transition at 240 K is a second-order CDW phase transition. Our results reveal (i) a 2 x 2 CDW order in Bi$_2$Rh$_3$Se$_2$, accompanied by the reconstruction of electronic structure, such as band folding, band splitting, and opening of CDW gaps at and away from Fermi level; (ii) the existence of electron-phonon coupling, which is manifested as an obvious kink and peak-dip-hump structure in dispersion; and (iii) the appearance of a flat band. Our observations thus enable us to shed light on the nature of the CDW order and its interplay with superconductivity in Bi$_2$Rh$_3$Se$_2$., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures
