Abstract

A 56-day feeding trial was performed to compare the impacts of replacement of dietary fishmeal by soybean meal (SM) or extruded soybean meal (ESM) on the growth performance and muscle quality of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) (initial weight: 6.32 ± 0.01 g). Nine isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were prepared by substituting 0% (FM, control), 12% (SM12/ESM12), 24% (SM24/ESM24), 36% (SM36/ESM36) and 48% (SM48/ESM48) of fishmeal with SM or ESM respectively. Results indicated that contents of anti-nutritional factors (trypsin inhibitors, glycinin and β-conglycinin) in ESM were significantly lower than those in SM. The weight gain rate, specific growth rate, feed efficiency ratio, protein efficiency ratio, activities of intestinal trypsin and lipase, as well as expressions of myogenic regulatory factors (myf5 , myod and mrf4) and protein synthesis-related genes (akt , pi3k , tor and s6) in fish muscle decreased linearly and quadratically with increasing replacement levels of dietary fishmeal by SM or ESM. Expressions of mstn and protein degradation-related genes (foxo1 , murf-1 , mafbx , capn2 and ctsl) in muscle showed a trend opposite to growth parameters responding to dietary SM or ESM levels. Significant differences in all the above parameters were observed in the SM36, SM48 and ESM48 groups, accompanied by the declines in contents of most muscle free amino acids. The increase of dietary fishmeal replacement level by SM linearly and quadratically decreased muscle hardness, water holding capacity (WHC), pH and total collagen content. Markedly lower values were found in the SM36 and SM48 groups. However, ESM could replace up to 36% of dietary fishmeal without significantly impacts on above muscle quality parameters. Additionally, reduced myofiber density and sarcomere length were observed in the SM36, SM48, ESM36 and ESM48 groups. However, at the same substitution level, dietary ESM relieved the effects of SM on myofiber morphology to some extent. In conclusion, according to broken-line regression on SGR, the optimal replacing level of fishmeal by SM and ESM for olive flounder was 22.07% and 34.39% respectively. The improved replacement level of fishmeal by ESM, in terms of fish growth, muscle hardness and WHC, may be due to the fact that dietary ESM alleviated the adverse impacts of SM on digestive enzyme activity, muscle growth-related genes expression, muscle pH, collagen content and myofiber morphology of fish. • Effects of dietary soybean meal (SM) or extruded soybean meal (ESM) on olive flounder were compared. • Based on broken-line regression on SGR, optimal replacing level of fishmeal by SM and ESM was 22.07% and 34.39% respectively. • Reduced growth and muscle quality were observed when replacement of fishmeal by SM exceeded 24% or by ESM exceeded 36%. • Dietary ESM alleviated adverse impacts of SM on digestive enzyme and muscle growth-related gene, thus improving fish growth. • ESM alleviated adverse impacts of SM on muscle pH, collagen content and myofiber morphology, thus improving muscle quality. Abstract

The capture of highly radiotoxic 90Sr from an acidic waste solution during used fuel reprocessing and environmental remediation in a nuclear accident is desirable and challenging. Herein, we show a metal organic framework material (SNU-200) functionalized with an 18-crown-6-ether, whose specific binding site with an excellent affinity toward strontium leads to excellent Sr2+ adsorption capability under acidic conditions. This material exhibits a high adsorption capacity (44.37 mg g−1 at pH = 3), remarkable affinity (Kd = 3.63 × 104 mL g−1) and ultrahigh selectivity in the presence of interfering coexisting ions such as Na+, K+, Cs+, Mg2+, and Ca2+. Abstract

99Tc is a long-lived radionuclide present in large amounts as TcO4-anion in used nuclear fuel. Its removal from the waste stream is highly desirable because of its interference capability with actinide separation and its volatile nature during the nuclear waste vitrification process. Despite the progress achieved in the past few years, the design of anion-exchange materials with optimized Tc uptake property and improved stability under the extreme condition, is still a research goal beneficial for reducing the volume of secondary radioactive solid waste generated during the waste partitioning process. However, their design philosophy remains elusive, with challenges coming from charge repulsion, steric hindrance, and insufficient reactive sites within the materials. Herein, we present a design philosophy of cationic polymer network materials for TcO4-separation by systematic precursor screening and structure prediction. This affords an optimized material, SCU-CPN-2(SCU=Soochow University), with extremely high positive charge density while maintaining high radiation resistance. SCU-CPN-2exhibits a record high adsorption capacity (1,467 mg/g towards the surrogate ReO4-) compared to all anion-exchange materials reported up to date. In addition to ultrafast adsorption kinetics, SCU-CPN-2has remarkable selectivity over nitrate and sulfate, and facile recyclability.

Abstract

Aim: Foreign body (FB) injuries represent a severe public health problem during childhood. The aim of this study was to report our experience with patients with injuries due to FB ingestion and insertion who were treated surgically at our institution.Methods: A total of 78 paediatric patients who were hospitalised for FB injuries were retrospectively reviewed.Results: The series was composed of 27 males and 51 females, with a median age of 3.6 years. The cases included 35 cases of FB ingestion and 43 cases of FB insertion, including 40 cases with a vaginal insertion, 2 cases with a rectal insertion and 1 case with a urethra insertion. Intestinal perforation (n = 26) was a more common complication than intestinal obstruction (n = 9) in patients who had ingested a FB. The main clinical symptom was persistent vaginal discharge, followed by vaginal bleeding for patients with a vaginal FB insertion. Exploratory laparotomy was performed on 36 patients, while a laparoscopic approach was employed in 1 patient. Forty patients underwent hysteroscopy and one patient underwent cystotomy to remove the FB. All FBs were successfully removed. Of the 78 FBs recovered, 26 were food objects, while non-food objects were found in 52 patients. All patients recovered well, except one patient with an intestinal obstruction from adhesions that occurred approximately 1 month after discharge.Conclusions: Early recognition of FB injuries and appropriate management can significantly reduce complications. Abstract

This work reports the syntheses, structures, and luminescence properties of two supramolecular polymorphic compounds composed of a hybrid bismuth(III) chloride anion and an imidazolium cation, namely α- ( 1) and β- ( 2) [Bmim][BiCl4(2,2′-bpy)] (Bmim=1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium; 2,2′-bpy=2,2′-bipyridine). They are the first two examples of Bi3+-containing ionic liquids (ILs). Their different packing modes may be ascribed to the rotational flexibility of the butyl group on the [Bmim]+ cation. A comparative study of the weak intermolecular interactions present in the two polymorphs has been performed by Hirshfeld surface and two-dimensional fingerprint analyses. Investigations of the luminescence properties revealed that crystallization induced greenish-yellow phosphorescence with quantum yields of 26.07 % for 1 and 36.59 % for 2, which are among the highest hitherto reported for hybrid halobismuthate compounds. The difference in phosphorescence may be attributed to the different weak interactions in 1 and 2, especially π-π contacts. This work opens the way to further research on new types of polymorphism-dependent luminescent materials based on a combination of rotationally isomeric IL cations with organic decorated bismuth(III) chloride anions. Abstract

Removal of 99TcO4− from legacy defense nuclear tank waste at Savannah River Site is highly desirable for the purpose of nuclear safety and environmental protection, but currently not achievable given the extreme conditions including high alkalinity, high ionic strength, and strong radiation field. Herein, we present a potential solution to this long-term issue by developing a two-dimensional cationic metal organic framework SCU-103, showing ultrahigh stability in alkaline aqueous media and great resistance to both β and γ radiation. More importantly, it is very effective for 99TcO4− separation from aqueous media as demonstrated by fast exchange kinetics, high sorption capacity, and superior selectivity, leading to the successful removal of 99TcO4− from actual Savannah River Site high level tank waste for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. In addition, the uptake mechanism is comprehensively elucidated by molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory calculation, showing a unique chemical recognition of anions with low charge density. Separation of 99TcO4− from nuclear waste at the Savannah River Site is hampered by the extreme conditions. Here, the authors propose a solution by developing an alkaline-resistant metal organic framework material featuring unique recognition sites for selective incorporation of 99TcO4− anions.
