Aerosols of biological origins, known as bioaerosols, in addition to having the aerosol properties, have those of a living system that offers them some enabling functionalities. From science to technology, visible progress around the world has been made in bioaerosol field before and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Here the roles of bioaerosol across various disciplines, including air quality, climate and human health are highlighted and appreciated in light of Anthropocene and one health concept. In particular, we recognized the importance of aerobiology under haze air pollution, allergenic pollen and bioaerosol involvement in infectious and inflammation-related non-communicable diseases. Future interdisciplinary studies focusing on the chemical and biological process of microorganisms in air, airborne transmission of emerging pathogens and allergens and the association between bioaerosol exposure and the development and variations of human microbiome and immune response are needed to elucidate the interactions of bioaerosols with the earth system.

Biological particles, as a fraction of organic particles, potentially play a crucial role in ice nucleation processes. However, the contributions and relationships of biological components and organic matter (OM) to atmospheric ice nucleation remain largely unexplored. Here, total ice nucleating particles (INPs), heat‐resistant INPs, lysozyme‐resistant INPs, nanoscale INPs (<0.22 μm), and heat‐resistant nanoscale INPs in precipitation collected at the summit of Mt. Lu, China, were determined using droplet freezing assays coupled with corresponding pretreatments. Heat‐sensitive INPs and lysozyme‐sensitive INPs were considered as biological INPs and bacterial INPs, respectively. Microorganisms and OM molecules in precipitation were identified by high‐throughput sequencing technology and ultrahigh‐resolution mass spectrometry, respectively. Results revealed a predominant biological (heat‐sensitive) composition (78.8% and 93.2%) of total and nanoscale INPs at temperatures above −15°C. Specifically, bacterial (lysozyme‐sensitive) INPs accounted for 36.1% of the biological INPs at temperatures above −15°C. A notable correlation between sulfur‐containing organic compounds, mainly proteinaceous and lignin‐like substances, and INPs was uncovered, with a co‐occurrence network linking these compounds to Gram‐positive bacteria and Agaricomycetes. This study underscored the possible significance of sulfur‐containing organic compounds in the ice nucleation capacity of biological INPs, further shedding light on the ice nucleation mechanisms and potential sources of biological INPs. Plain Language Summary: Ice nucleating particles (INPs) are particles that facilitate the freezing of water at temperatures above the homogenous freezing point, impacting cloud formation and precipitation processes in the atmosphere. This study identified different types of INPs, microbes, and organic matter in precipitation sampled from Mt. Lu in southeastern China and investigated the connections among them. The findings suggested that a significant portion of INPs were of biological origin. Sulfur‐containing organic compounds likely played an important role in ice nucleation, which may originate from certain microbial taxa. This study helps us understand the role of microbes and organic molecules in ice formation, which has broader implications in areas such as preserving biological materials at low temperatures or facilitating artificial snow production. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a central role in adverse health effects of air pollutants. Respiratory deposition of fine air particulate matter can lead to the formation of ROS in epithelial lining fluid, potentially causing oxidative stress and inflammation. Secondary organic aerosols (SOA) account for a large fraction of fine particulate matter, but their role in adverse health effects is unclear. Here, we quantify and compare the ROS yields and oxidative potential of isoprene, β-pinene, and naphthalene SOA in water and surrogate lung fluid (SLF). In pure water, isoprene and β-pinene SOA were found to produce mainly OH and organic radicals, whereas naphthalene SOA produced mainly H2O2 and O2•-. The total molar yields of ROS of isoprene and β-pinene SOA were 11.8% and 8.2% in water and decreased to 8.5% and 5.2% in SLF, which can be attributed to ROS removal by lung antioxidants. A positive correlation between the total peroxide concentration and ROS yield suggests that organic (hydro)peroxides may play an important role in ROS formation from biogenic SOA. The total molar ROS yields of naphthalene SOA was 1.7% in water and increased to 11.3% in SLF. This strong increase is likely due to redox reaction cycles involving environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFR) or semiquinones, antioxidants, and oxygen, which may promote the formation of H2O2 and the adverse health effects of anthropogenic SOA from aromatic precursors.

Air pollution and climate change are potential drivers for the increasing burden of allergic diseases. The molecular mechanisms by which air pollutants and climate parameters may influence allergic diseases, however, are complex and elusive. This article provides an overview of physical, chemical and biological interactions between air pollution, climate change, allergens, adjuvants and the immune system, addressing how these interactions may promote the development of allergies. We reviewed and synthesized key findings from atmospheric, climate, and biomedical research. The current state of knowledge, open questions, and future research perspectives are outlined and discussed. The Anthropocene, as the present era of globally pervasive anthropogenic influence on planet Earth and, thus, on the human environment, is characterized by a strong increase of carbon dioxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides, and combustion- or traffic-related particulate matter in the atmosphere. These environmental factors can enhance the abundance and induce chemical modifications of allergens, increase oxidative stress in the human body, and skew the immune system toward allergic reactions. In particular, air pollutants can act as adjuvants and alter the immunogenicity of allergenic proteins, while climate change affects the atmospheric abundance and human exposure to bioaerosols and aeroallergens. To fully understand and effectively mitigate the adverse effects of air pollution and climate change on allergic diseases, several challenges remain to be resolved. Among these are the identification and quantification of immunochemical reaction pathways involving allergens and adjuvants under relevant environmental and physiological conditions.

Bioaerosols play significant roles in causing health and climate effects. Sugar compounds in air have been widely used to trace the source of bioaerosols. However, knowledge about the association of sugar molecules and the microbial community at taxonomic levels in atmospheric aerosols remains limited. Here, microbial community compositions and sugar molecules in total suspended particles collected from a typical rural site, Gucheng, in the North China Plain were investigated by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and high-throughput gene sequencing, respectively. Results show that fungal community structure exhibited distinct diurnal variation with largely enhanced contribution of Basidiomycota at night, while bacterial community structure showed no obvious difference between daytime and night. SourceTracker analysis revealed that fungi and bacteria were mainly from plant leaves and unresolved sources (presumably human-related emissions and/or long-distance transport). All the detected anhydrosugars and sugar alcohols and trehalose showed diurnal variations with lower concentrations in the daytime and higher concentrations at night, which may be affected by enhanced fungal emissions at night, while primary sugars (except trehalose) showed an opposite trend. Mantel's test showed that more sugar compounds exhibited significant associations with fungal community structure than bacterial community structure. Co-occurrence analysis revealed the strong associations between sugar compounds and a few saprophytic fungal genera with low relative abundances, e.g., Hannaella, Lectera, Peniophora, Hydnophlebia, Sporobolomyces and Cyphellophora. This study suggests that the entire fungal community, rather than specific fungal taxa, likely greatly contributes to sugar compounds in rural aerosols, while the contribution of bacteria is limited. Benzene toluene ethylbenzene & xylene (BTEX) in indoor air has significant harm for human health. This paper designs an experiment platform for alternating adsorption-enhanced catalytic treatment of BTEX by plasma. The experiment platform consists of adsorption/catalysis dual-function module, low-temperature plasma generation module, pipeline system and control system. The development of the experiment platform achieves the green goal of continuous control of low concentration BTEX for a long time without O3 secondary pollution. The teaching application of the platform enriches the form and content of experimental courses such as air pollution control engineering and environmental comprehensive experiment, and helps to cultivate students' innovative thinking and comprehensive ability to solve practical engineering problems. According to the current situation of light hydrocarbon resources and combined with the market demand, the process engineering technology to produce aromatics, olefins, gasoline and chemical feedstocks from LPG have been studied and developed, and many of them have been widely popularized and applied. The C4 components of FCC ether rich in olefins can be transformed into high-purity aromatics by aromatization technology, ad the yield of aromatics is 56.22%. The ffuidized bed catalytic cracking process with continuous reaction regeneration is a new technology for producing ethylene and propylene from C4 components. Through the recycle of unconverted C4 components and light gasoline, the yields of ethylene and propylene can reach about 60%, and some aromatics can be produced by-product. The catalytic cracking of isobutane into propane, which can efficiently produce ethylene and propylene is a new technology developed in recent years, and the propane yield is as high as 73%-75%. In addition, the technology of producing high octane gasoline from LPG has low investment and low operating cost, which is also one of the ways to utilize LPG. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
