Abstract

Results are reported of treatment of 19 patients with acute pneumonia by means of low-energy laser radiation in the complex of therapeutic measures. The positive effect of laser treatment was observed after 2-3 sessions: reduction of pain and heaviness in the chest, lower intensity of cough, normalization of sleep, more rapid normalization of peripheral blood findings, biochemical indices, external respiration function and roentgenological picture, shorter hospitalization time.

Abstract

The examination was conducted in 67 patients with Stage II essential hypertension, aged 29 to 60 years (13 males and 54 females). Cortisol metabolism was assessed on the basis of a study of daily urine excretions of tetrahydrocortisol, tetrahydrocortisone, cortisol, cortisone, 17-oxy-11-desoxycortisol and of their ratio. It is found that in patients with Stage II essential hypertension, beyond the period of exacerbation, cortisol metabolism and the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex are unchanged. During crises the gluococorticoid function of the adrenal cortex is activated, and some changes develop in cortisol metabolism. The severity of the crisis does not affect cortisol metabolism, but results in a growing total secretory activity of the adrenal cortex.

Abstract

Diurnal periodicity of the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex was studied in 52 patients with atherosclerotic cardiosclerosis without and with circulatory insufficency of the I, IIA and IIB stage, based on the determination of 17-OCS in 3 portions of the urine collected at equal 8-hours long time intervals. The patients without circulatory insufficiency and with insufficiency of the 1st stage received ascorbic acid in amounts of 0.3 g thrice a day, along with vitamins B1 and B6 (5 and 6 per cent) in doses of 1 ml for 14-16 days. Patients with circulatory insufficiency of the IIA and IIB stages were given vitamins and cardiac glycosides. Investigations ascertained disturbed rhythmic and functional activity of the suprarenals in these patients. The treatment resulted in improving the glucocorticoid function of the adrenal cortex with simultaneous normalization of the rhythmic activity of the suprarenals.
