Understanding the dynamics of hot, highly energetic electrons resulting from nonradiative plasmon decay is crucial for optimizing applications in photocatalysis and energy conversion. This study presents an analysis of electron kinetics within plasmonic metals, focusing on the steady-state behavior during continuous-wave (CW) illumination. Using an inelastic spectroscopy technique, we quantify the temperature and lifetimes of distinct carrier populations during excitation. A significant finding is the monotonic increase in hot electron lifetime with decreases in electronic temperature. We also observe a 1.22× increase in hot electron temperature during intraband excitation compared to interband excitation and a corresponding 2.34× increase in carrier lifetime. The shorter lifetimes during interband excitation are hypothesized to result from direct recombination of nonthermal holes and hot electrons, highlighting steady-state kinetics. Our results help bridge the knowledge gap between ultrafast and steady-state spectroscopies, offering critical insights for optimizing plasmonic applications.

We examine halide anion-exchange reactions on CsPbX3 nanorods (NRs), and we identify reaction conditions that provide complete anion exchange while retaining both the highly quantum-confined 1-D morphology and metastable crystal lattice configurations that span a range between tetragonal structures and thermodynamically preferred orthorhombic structures. We find that the chemical stability of CsPbBr3 NRs is degraded by the presence of alkyl amines that etch CsPbBr3 and result in the formation of Cs4PbBr6 and 2-D bromoplumbates. Our study outlines strategies for maintaining metastable states of the soft lattices of perovskite nanocrystals undergoing exchange reactions, despite the thermodynamic driving force toward more stable lattice configurations during this disruptive chemical transformation. These strategies can be used to fine-tune the band gap of LHP-based nanostructures while preserving structure-property relationships that are contingent on metastable shapes and crystal configurations, aiding optoelectronic applications of these materials.

Abstract: Nanostructured plasmonic surfaces allow for precise tailoring of electromagnetic modes within sub-diffraction mode volumes, boosting light–matter interactions. This study explores vibrational strong coupling (VSC) between molecular ensembles and subradiant “dark” cavities that support infrared quadrupolar plasmonic resonances (QPLs). The QPL mode exhibits a dispersion characteristic of bound states in the continuum (BIC). That is, the mode is subradiant or evanescent at normal incidence and acquires increasing “bright” dipole character with larger in-plane wavevectors. We deposited polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) thin films on QPL substrates to induce VSC with the carbonyl stretch in PMMA and measured the resulting infrared (IR) spectra. Our computational analysis predicts the presence of “dark” subradiant polariton states within the near-field of the QPL mode, and “bright” collective molecular states. This finding is consistent with classical and quantum mechanical descriptions of VSC that predict hybrid polariton states with cavity-like modal character and N−1 collective molecular states with minimal cavity character. However, the behaviour is opposite of what is standardly observed in VSC experiments that use “bright” cavities, which results in “bright” polariton states that can be spectrally resolved as well as N−1 collective molecular states that are spectrally absent. Our experiments confirm a reduction of molecular absorption and other spectral signatures of VSC with the QPL mode. In comparison, our experiments promoting VSC with dipolar plasmonic resonances (DPLs) reproduce the conventional behavior. Our results highlight the significance of cavity mode symmetry in modifying the properties of the resultant states from VSC, while offering prospects for direct experimental probing of the N−1 molecule-like states that are usually spectrally “dark”.

Colloidal lead halide perovskite nanorods have recently emerged as promising optoelectronic materials. However, more information about how shape anisotropy impacts their complex dielectric function is required to aid the development of applications that take advantage of the strongly polarized absorption and emission. Here, we have determined the anisotropy of the complex dielectric function of CsPbBr3 nanorods by analyzing the ensemble absorption spectra in conjunction with the ensemble spectral fluorescence anisotropy. This strategy allows us to distinguish the absorption of light parallel and perpendicular to the main axis so that the real and imaginary components of the dielectric function along each direction can be determined by the use of an iterative matrix inversion (IMI) methodology. We find that quantum confinement gives rise to unique axis-dependent electronic features in the dielectric function that increase the overall fluorescence anisotropy in addition to the optical anisotropy that results from particle shape, even in the absence of quantum confinement. Further, the procedure outlined here provides a strategy for obtaining anisotropic complex dielectric functions of colloidal materials of varying composition and aspect ratios using ensemble solution-phase spectroscopy.

Nanoscale metamaterials exhibit extraordinary optical properties and are proposed for various technological applications. Here, a new class of novel nanoscale two-phase hybrid metamaterials is achieved by combining two major classes of traditional plasmonic materials, metals (e.g., Au) and transition metal nitrides (e.g., TaN, TiN, and ZrN) in an epitaxial thin film form via the vertically aligned nanocomposite platform. By properly controlling the nucleation of the two phases, the nanoscale artificial plasmonic lattices (APLs) consisting of highly ordered hexagonal close packed Au nanopillars in a TaN matrix are demonstrated. More specifically, uniform Au nanopillars with an average diameter of 3 nm are embedded in epitaxial TaN platform and thus form highly 3D ordered APL nanoscale metamaterials. Novel optical properties include highly anisotropic reflectance, obvious nonlinear optical properties indicating inversion symmetry breaking of the hybrid material, large permittivity tuning and negative permittivity response over a broad wavelength regime, and superior mechanical strength and ductility. The study demonstrates the novelty of the new hybrid plasmonic scheme with great potentials in versatile material selection, and, tunable APL spacing and pillar dimension, all important steps toward future designable hybrid plasmonic materials.

Resonant metal nanostructures exhibit an optically induced electrostatic potential when illuminated with monochromatic light under off-resonant conditions. This plasmoelectric effect is thermodynamically driven by the increase in entropy that occurs when the plasmonic structure aligns its resonant absorption spectrum with incident illumination by varying charge density. As a result, the elevated steady-state temperature of the nanostructure induced by plasmonic absorption is further increased by a small amount. Here, we study in detail the thermodynamic theory underlying the plasmoelectric effect by analyzing a simplified model system consisting of a single silver nanoparticle. We find that surface potentials as large as 473 mV are induced under 100 W/m(2) monochromatic illumination, as a result of a 11 mK increases in the steady-state temperature of the nanoparticle. Furthermore, we discuss the applicability of this analysis for realistic experimental geometries, and show that this effect is generic for optical structures in which the resonance is linked to the charge density.

One-photon up-conversion, also called anti-Stokes photoluminescence (ASPL), is the process whereby photoexcited carriers scavenge thermal energy and are promoted into a higher energy excited state before emitting a photon of greater energy than initially absorbed. Here, we examine how ASPL from CsPbBr3 nanoparticles is modified by coupling with plasmonically active gold nanoparticles deposited on a substrate. Two coupling regimes are examined using confocal fluorescence microscopy: three to four Au nanoparticles per diffraction limited region and monolayer Au nanoparticle coverage of the substrate. In both regimes, CsPbBr3 ASPL is blue-shifted relative to CsPbBr3 deposited on a bare substrate, corresponding to an increase in the thermal energy scavenged per emitted photon. However, with monolayer Au nanoparticle coverage, ASPL is enhanced relative to the conventional Stokes-shifted PL. Together, these phenomena result in a 6.7-fold increase in the amount of thermal energy extracted from the system during optical absorption and reemission.

We report a 100,000-fold increase in the conductance of individual CdSe nanorods when they are electrically contacted via direct solution phase growth of Au tips on the nanorod ends. Ensemble UV-Vis and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicate this enhancement does not result from alloying of the nanorod. Rather, low temperature tunneling and high temperature (250-400 K) thermionic emission across the junction at the Au contact reveal a 75percent lower interface barrier to conduction compared to a control sample. We correlate this barrier lowering with the electronic structure at the Au-CdSe interface. Our results emphasize the importance of nanocrystal surface structure for robust device performance and the advantage of this contact method.

Recent studies have established that the anti-Stokes Raman signal from plasmonic metal nanostructures can be used to determine the two separate temperatures that characterize carriers inside the metal—the temperature of photoexcited "hot carriers" and carriers that are thermalized with the metal lattice. However, the related signal in the Stokes spectral region has historically impeded surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy, as the vibrational peaks of adsorbed molecules are always accompanied by the broad background of the metal substrate. The fundamental source of the metal signal, and hence its contribution to the spectrum, has been unclear. Here, we outline a unified theoretical model that describes both the temperature-dependent behavior and the broad spectral distribution. We suggest that the majority of the Raman signal is from inelastic scattering directly with carriers in a non-thermal energy distribution that have been excited via damping of surface plasmon. In addition, a significant spectral component (∼1%) is due to a sub-population of hot carriers with an energy distribution that is well approximated by an elevated temperature distribution, about 2000 K greater than the lattice temperature of the metal. We have performed temperature- and power-dependent Raman experiments to show how a simple fitting procedure reveals the plasmon dephasing time as well as the temperatures of the hot carriers and the metal lattice, in order to correlate these parameters with the quantitative Raman analysis of chemical species adsorbed on the metal surface. Vibrational strong coupling of molecules to optical cavities based on plasmonic resonances has been explored recently because plasmonic near-fields can provide strong coupling in sub-diffraction limited volumes. Such field localization maximizes coupling strength, which is crucial for modifying the vibrational response of molecules and, thereby, manipulating chemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate an angle-independent plasmonic nanodisk substrate that overcomes limitations of traditional Fabry–Pérot optical cavities because the design can strongly couple with all molecules on the surface of the substrate regardless of molecular orientation. We demonstrate that the plasmonic substrate provides strong coupling with the C=O vibrational stretch of deposited films of PMMA. We also show that the large linewidths of the plasmon resonance allow for simultaneous strong coupling to two, orthogonal water symmetric and asymmetric vibrational modes in a thin film of copper sulfate monohydrate deposited on the substrate surface. A three-coupled-oscillator model is developed to analyze the coupling strength of the plasmon resonance with these two water modes. With precise control over the nanodisk diameter, the plasmon resonance is tuned systematically through the modes, with the Rabi splitting from both modes varying as a function of the plasmon frequency and with strong coupling to both modes achieved simultaneously for a range of diameters. This work may aid further studies into manipulation of the ground-state chemical landscape of molecules by perturbing multiple vibrational modes simultaneously and increasing the coupling strength in sub-diffraction limited volumes. Metal nanostructures have been the focus of several recent studies due to their ability to generate high energy, non-equilibrium "hot" electrons for use in photochemical and photocatalytic applications. In particular, there is growing interest to understand how differences in the electronic structure and optical response of different metals may impact the behavior and utility of their hot electrons in chemical reactions. Using a continuous wave anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy technique recently developed in our laboratory, in this study, we measured the temperature and lifetime of hot electrons in gold and copper nanostructures in order to understand how the choice of metal impacts hot electron dynamics during steady state illumination. We found that hot electrons in copper are more abundant and more reactive than those in gold, suggesting that copper nanostructures may be a more promising platform for performing hot electron photochemistry.
