This paper presents a facile solvothermal method of synthesizing copper indium sulfide (CuInS2) quantum dots (QDs) via a non-coordinated system using polyetheramine as a solvent. The structural and optical properties of the resulting CuInS2 QDs were investigated using composition analysis, absorption spectroscopy, and emission spectroscopy. We employed molar ratios of I, III, and VI group elements to control the structure of CuInS2 QDs. An excess of group VI elements facilitated precipitation, whereas an excess of group I elements resulted in CuInS2 QDs with high photoluminescence quantum yield. The emission wavelength and photoluminescence quantum yield could also be modulated by controlling the composition ratio of Cu and In in the injection stock solution. An increase in the portion of S shifted the emission wavelength of the QDs to a shorter wavelength and increased the photoluminescence quantum yield. Our results demonstrate that the band gap of the CuInS2 QDs is tunable with size as well as the composition of the reactant. The photoluminescence quantum yield of the CuInS2 QDs ranged between 0.7% and 8.8% at 250°C. We also determined some important physical parameters such as the band gaps and energy levels of this system, which are crucial for the application of CuInS2 nanocrystals.

Effects of essential oils and hot-water extracts isolated from leaf and twig of stout camphor tree, Cinnamomum kanehirae on antibacterial activity to pathogen of fish, abalone, marine fish and freshwater prawn, and the white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei immunity and disease resistance to Vibrio alginolyticus were carried out in this study. A better antibacterial activity against nine selected pathogen bacteria was recorded in twig essential oil, and the selected pathogens of both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria were sensitive to the leaf and twig essential oils in the present study. No antibacterial activity was recorded in the hot-water extracts of leaf and twig. In challenge trial, a significant decrease of sensitivity to V. alginolyticus (1 x 10(6) cfu shrimp(-1)) was found in that of shrimp received hot-water extract from twig at the levels of 2 microg g shrimp(-1) compared to control. In addition, the how-water extract of twig in vitro showed greater enhanced effects on phenoloxidase activity, respiratory burst and phagocytosis of white shrimp compared to the hot-water extract of leaf. It is considered that the extracts of stout camphor tree could be a candidate to replace the chemo-therapeutants through the inhibitory effects against the growth of pathogens, and enhanced effects on shrimp immunity and disease resistance.

We describe an occurrence of small cell carcinoma of the lung in a 37-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis who did not receive any kind of cytotoxic agents for the rheumatic condition. There seemed to have no predisposing factor for the development of malignancy. The diagnosis of small cell carcinoma was based on repeated hemoptysis and cytologic finding of a rapidly growing mass over the forehead. The patient responded dramatically to chemotherapy with rapid resolution of forehead mass, relief of arthritis in the hands, and decrease of serum rheumatoid factor from 4800U/ml to 1200U/ml. This appeared to be the first report of small cell carcinoma of the lung developing in a patient with rheumatoid arthritis.

Recombinant human interleukin 8 (IL-8) enhanced the release of inflammatory cytokines including interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 beta), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) from normal human mononuclear cells in a dose-related manner (from 1 ng/ml to 10 ng/ml with a maximal effect at 5 ng/ml) when the cells incubated with IL-8 for 24 h. This cytokine-releasing activity of IL-8 is temperature-dependent and required protein synthesis since low temperature (4 degrees C) and cycloheximide (100 micrograms/ml) minimized the cytokine release from MNC. However, when IL-8 concentration was greater than 20 ng/ml, the cytokine release was suppressed. For further investigating the subcellular mechanism of the adverse effect of high dose IL-8 (20 ng/ml) in cytokine synthesis, human mononuclear cells (1 x 10(6)/ml) were stimulated with PHA (1 microgram/ml) in the presence of 20 ng/ml IL-8 for 3 days. We found not only [3H]thymidine incorporation of MNC was tremendously inhibited but DNA fragmentation appeared. Subsequently, the cell cycle of PHA-stimulated MNC retarded in the phase of G0/G1. These results suggest that in low concentration (5-10 ng/ml) IL-8 not only activated neutrophil phagocytosis but facilitated the release of inflammatory cytokines from mononuclear cells. Higher dose of IL-8 (more than 20 ng/ml) conversely suppressed these cytokine release from damaged cells by its cytotoxic effect. This newly found cytokine-releasing activity of IL-8 may play a role in the modulation of inflammation.
