Although researchers have consistently demonstrated the potential benefit of an external focus of attention for rehabilitation, research has shown that this finding has yet to be translated into Canadian physiotherapy. Further, specific barriers to external focus use have been reported by Canadian physiotherapists, and as a solution toward increasing physiotherapists' use of external focus, these same physiotherapists recommended the development of an educational workshop on focus of attention. Considering this, described herein is the process of developing such a workshop, which involved (a) gathering input from physiotherapists concerning content and format via one-on-one interviews and (b) engaging in discussion about content with focus of attention researchers. Analysis of the interview data featured key content for the workshop, the types of activities to include, and a recommended sequencing for the activities: specifically, sharing didactic information on focus of attention research, then providing instruction and demonstration of external focus use, and finally, finishing with opportunities for generating and delivering external focus statements. This input, along with that of the researchers, led to the development of a two-component focus of attention workshop, which includes an asynchronous component, featuring seven self-directed learning modules and a synchronous component, which consists of a virtual group session. Although researchers have highlighted the benefits of adopting an external focus of attention for rehabilitation, studies have consistently revealed low external focus use by physiotherapists. Consequently, the purpose of this research was to explore factors influencing physiotherapists' focus of attention use and to gain insight into the barriers, and potential solutions, related to effective external focus use. Eight physiotherapists, working with musculoskeletal rehabilitation clients, first completed the Therapists' Perceptions of Motor Learning Principles Questionnaire and then participated in virtual one-on-one interviews. The interviews followed a semistructured interview guide and were analyzed using a total quality framework approach to qualitative content analysis. Data showed that physiotherapists' focus of attention use was influenced by physiotherapist, client, and task characteristics/experiences, as well as focus of attention statement provision strategies. Furthermore, the main barriers discussed related to educational experiences, reinforcement of internal focus of attention statement use and aspects related to research. Solutions presented to these barriers included the incorporation of focus of attention content into both the Canadian physiotherapy curriculum and continued education. Overall, these results advance our knowledge of factors underlying physiotherapists' focus of attention use and barriers that must be overcome to successfully translate the focus of attention research into physiotherapy. As the commercial and home brewing of kombucha expands to accommodate its increased popularity, novel brewing practices that generate non-alcoholic kombucha in an efficient manner become valuable. The research presented in this work compares kombucha brewed in a glass jar brewing vessel to that brewed in an air-permeable silicone bag. Identical kombucha ferments with various sugar food sources were prepared and placed in each vessel, and variables such as titratable acidity, pH, alcohol by volume, gluconic acid concentration, acetic acid concentration, and sugar content were studied as a function of time. The results indicated that, regardless of the food source, kombucha brewed in an air-permeable bag exhibited more efficient acid production, lower ethanol concentration, and greater sugar utilization relative to equivalent kombucha brewed in a jar. View large Download slide View large Download slide OBJECTIVES Long-term data on the impact of pulmonary artery (PA) augmentation in patients who underwent the Fontan procedure are lacking. The aim of this study was to examine whether surgical or transcatheter PA augmentation at or prior to the Fontan procedure adversely affects the outcomes. METHODS Data of 1436 patients from the Australia-New Zealand Fontan Registry (1975–2015) were analysed. Primary end point was death or Fontan failure. Cox regression with propensity score matching was used to determine risk or benefit conferred by PA augmentation. RESULTS Forty-eight (3.3%) patients underwent PA augmentation following cavopulmonary shunt (surgical n  = 14, balloon dilatation n  = 16 and stent n  = 18) and 105 (7.3%) patients underwent PA augmentation at the time of the Fontan procedure (surgical n  = 104, stent n  = 1). Median follow-up was 6.4 years with 10 deaths (6.5%) in the augmentation group and 10.5 years with 95 deaths (7.4%) in the non-augmentation group. The unadjusted Kaplan–Meier, log-rank test and Cox regression analysis demonstrated no significant difference in both end points between the 2 groups [death: hazard ratio (HR) 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.70–2.60; P  = 0.37 death or failure: HR 1.39, 95% CI 0.83–2.34; P  = 0.21]. The propensity score matching yielded 131 matched pairs, with adequate balance for all covariates (the median residual bias = 0.05). The subsequent Cox regression demonstrated no significant difference in the risks of death (HR 1.30, 95% CI 0.49–3.41; P  = 0.60) and death or Fontan failure (HR 0.92, 95% CI 0.46–1.85; P  = 0.82). CONCLUSIONS PA augmentation prior to or at the Fontan procedure does not confer worse long-term outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
