Abstract

In the present work the processing using high-pressure torsion (HPT) on Bridgman anvils with grooves of Al-Nb composite and tensile properties of this composite were investigated. Constrained HPT processing was applied to a set of three disks with the alternation of layers, i.e., Al-Nb-Al. at room temperature under a pressure of 5 GPa for 30 revolutions and a speed of 2 rpm. Investigations of the cross-section of the resulting composite showed that crushing and mechanical mixing of niobium in the aluminum matrix took place practically over the entire volume. In the central region of the composite, mixing is weakly expressed due to the low degree of deformation. Mechanical tests of the composite samples were carried out for three states: as-processed state; after annealing at 400 °C; after annealing at 600 °C. Tensile tests for samples cut from the zone corresponding to the middle of the radius of the composite, showed the values of ultimate strength: for the as processed state - 177 MPa; after subsequent annealing at 400 °C being 337 MPa; and after annealing at 600 °C - 291 MPa. Fractographic studies have shown that the dispersed Al3Nb phase is clearly visible on the fracture surfaces of both unannealed and annealed samples. Plastic deformation in the composite occurred mainly through the aluminum matrix; niobium remained practically not deformed. Strengthening proceeds according to the dispersed mechanism due to the Al3Nb phase formed at the Al/Nb boundaries. Abstract

For pure metals aluminum and magnesium and for chemical compounds Al₃Mg, Al₂Mg, AlMg and AlMg₃ with crystallographic orientations (100), (110) and (111) the work function is calculated from the first principles in the framework of the density functional theory. It is shown that the dependence of the work function on the magnesium concentration in aluminium is nonlinear. The reasons for the work function differences of chemical compounds depending on the crystallographic orientation are analysed.
