ABX 3 -type hybrid organic-inorganic structures have recently emerged as a new class of meltable materials. Here, by the use of phenylphosphonium derivatives as A cation, we study liquid- and glass-forming behavior of a new family of hybrid structures, (RPh 3 P)[Mn(dca) 3 ] (R = Me, Et, Ph; dca = dicyanamide). These new compounds melt at 196-237 °C ( T m ) and then vitrify upon cooling to room temperature, forming glasses. In situ glass formation of this new family of materials was probed on a large scale using a variable-temperature PXRD experiment. Structure analyses of the crystalline and the glasses were carried out by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and synchrotron X-ray total scattering techniques for using the pair distribution function. The mechanical properties of the glasses produced were evaluated showing promising durability. Thermal and electrical conductivities showed low thermal conductivities (κ ∼ 0.07-0.09 W m -1 K -1 ) and moderate electrical conductivities (σ ∼ 10 -4 -10 -6 S m -1 ) at room temperature, suggesting that by the precise control of the A cation, we can tune meltable hybrid structures from moderate conductors to efficient thermal insulators. Our results raise attention on the practical use of this new hybrid material in applications including, e.g., photovoltaic devices to prevent light-deposited heat (owing to low κ RT ), energy harvesting thermoelectric, etc., and advance the structure-property understanding.

Four novel dicyanamide-containing hybrid organic-inorganic ABX 3 structures are reported, and the thermal behaviour of a series of nine perovskite and non-perovskite [AB(N(CN) 2 ) 3 ] (A = (C 3 H 7 ) 4 N, (C 4 H 9 ) 4 N, (C 5 H 11 ) 4 N; B = Co, Fe, Mn) is analyzed. Structure-property relationships are investigated by varying both A-site organic and B-site transition metal cations. In particular, increasing the size of the A-site cation from (C 3 H 7 ) 4 N → (C 4 H 9 ) 4 N → (C 5 H 11 ) 4 N was observed to result in a decrease in T m through an increase in Δ S f . Consistent trends in T m with metal replacement are observed with each A-site cation, with Co < Fe < Mn. The majority of the melts formed were found to recrystallise partially upon cooling, though glasses could be formed through a small degree of organic linker decomposition. Background: The National Institutes of Health launched the NIH Centers for Accelerated Innovation and the Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hubs programs to develop approaches and strategies to promote academic entrepreneurship and translate research discoveries into products and tools to help patients. The two programs collectively funded 11 sites at individual research institutions or consortia of institutions around the United States. Sites provided funding, project management, and coaching to funded investigators and commercialization education programs open to their research communities., Methods: We implemented an evaluation program that included longitudinal tracking of funded technology development projects and commercialization outcomes; interviews with site teams, funded investigators, and relevant institutional and innovation ecosystem stakeholders and analysis and review of administrative data., Results: As of May 2021, interim results for 366 funded projects show that technologies have received nearly $1.7 billion in follow-on funding to-date. There were 88 start-ups formed, a 40% Small Business Innovation Research/Small Business Technology Transfer application success rate, and 17 licenses with small and large businesses. Twelve technologies are currently in clinical testing and three are on the market., Conclusions: Best practices used by the sites included leadership teams using milestone-based project management, external advisory boards that evaluated funding applications for commercial merit as well as scientific, sustained engagement with the academic community about commercialization in an effort to shift attitudes about commercialization, application processes synced with education programs, and the provision of project managers with private-sector product development expertise to coach funded investigators., Competing Interests: The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare., (© The Author(s) 2021.)

Several organic-inorganic hybrid materials from the metal-organic framework (MOF) family have been shown to form stable liquids at high temperatures. Quenching then results in the formation of melt-quenched MOF glasses that retain the three-dimensional coordination bonding of the crystalline phase. These hybrid glasses have intriguing properties and could find practical applications, yet the melt-quench phenomenon has so far remained limited to a few MOF structures. Here we turn to hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites-which occupy a prominent position within materials chemistry owing to their functional properties such as ion transport, photoconductivity, ferroelectricity and multiferroicity-and show that a series of dicyanamide-based hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites undergo melting. Our combined experimental-computational approach demonstrates that, on quenching, they form glasses that largely retain their solid-state inorganic-organic connectivity. The resulting materials show very low thermal conductivities (~0.2 W m -1 K -1 ), moderate electrical conductivities (10 -3 -10 -5  S m -1 ) and polymer-like thermomechanical properties., (© 2021. Storing and transferring electrons for multi-electron reduction processes are considered to be the key steps in various important chemical and biological transformations. In this work, we accomplished multi-electron reduction of a carboxylic acid via a hydrosilylation pathway where a redox-active phenalenyl backbone in Co(PLY-O,O) 2 (THF) 2 , stores electrons and plays a preponderant role in the entire process. This reduction proceeds by single electron transfer (SET) from the mono-reduced ligand backbone leading to the cleavage of the Si-H bond. Several important intermediates along the catalytic reduction reaction have been isolated and well characterized to prove that the redox equivalent is stored in the form of a C-H bond in the PLY backbone via a ligand dearomatization process. The ligand's extensive participation in storing a hydride equivalent has been conclusively elucidated via a deuterium labelling experiment. This is a rare example where the ligand orchestrates the multielectron reduction process leaving only the metal to maintain the conformational requirements and fine tunes the electronics of the catalyst.

Main group metal based catalysis has been considered to be a cost-effective alternative way to the transition metal based catalysis, due to the high abundance of main group metals in the Earth's crust. Among the main group metals, aluminum is the most abundant (7-8%) in the Earth's crust, making the development of aluminum based catalysts very attractive. So far, aluminum based compounds have been popularly used as Lewis acids in a variety of organic reactions, but chemical transformation demanding a redox based process has never utilized an Al(III) complex as a catalyst. Herein, we tuned the redox noninnocence behavior of a phenalenyl ligand by coupling with Al(III) ion, which subsequently can store the electron upon reduction with K to carry out direct C-H arylation of heteroarenes/mesitylene at ambient temperature. A mechanistic investigation revealed that a three-electron reduced phenalenyl based triradical aluminum(III) complex plays the key role in such catalysis. The electronic structure of the catalytically active triradical species has been probed using EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and electronic structure calculations using a DFT method.

Direct C-H arylation of arenes and heteroarenes to biaryls at ambient temperature has been accomplished using a phenalenyl-supported iron(III) catalyst. The present catalyst requires a chemical reductant such as potassium and functions without any light stimulation. C-H arylation of various heteroarenes including pyridine as well as unactivated arene such as benzene delivered good to excellent yield (28 examples, up to 92 %) at room temperature. A combined effort based on experiments and theoretical calculations established that a phenalenyl-based radical species (generated by chemical reduction of the iron(III) coordinated phenalenyl complex) plays key role during the catalysis. Furthermore, this catalyst displayed remarkable stability during the catalysis, as evident from the fact that it was still usable over ten consecutive catalytic runs without losing its catalytic efficiency., (© 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. An efficient route towards a heterogeneous transition metal-free catalytic C-H functionalization using a covalently linked graphene oxide-phenalenyl conjugate is described herein (28 examples, which include a core of some biologically relevant biaryl and hetero-biaryls). It is an environmentally benign, economical and heterogeneous platform, whose catalytic activity can easily be regenerated through a simple washing-drying technique and the catalytic activity can be retained even after 10 cycles.

Herein we report a transition-metal-free synthetic protocol for heterobiaryls, one of the most important pharmacophores in the modern drug industry, employing a new multidonor phenalenyl (PLY)-based ligand. The current procedure offers a wide substrate scope (24 examples) with a low catalyst loading resulting in an excellent product yield (up to 95%). The reaction mechanism involves a single electron transfer (SET) from a phenalenyl-based radical to generate a reactive heteroaryl radical. To establish the mechanism, we have isolated the catalytically active SET initiator, characterizing by a magnetic study.

In this report, a ligand-redox assisted catalytic hydrosilylation has been investigated. A phenalenyl ligand coordinated nickel complex has been utilized as an electron reservoir to develop a base metal-assisted catalyst, which very efficiently hydrosilylates a wide variety of olefin substrates under ambient conditions. A mechanistic investigation revealed that a two-electron reduced phenalenyl based biradical nickel complex plays the key role in such catalysis. The electronic structure of the catalytically active biradical species has been interrogated using EPR spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility measurements, and electronic structure calculations using a DFT method. Inhibition of the reaction by a radical quencher, as well as the mass spectrometric detection of two intermediates along the catalytic loop, suggest that a single electron transfer from the ligand backbone initiates the catalysis. The strategy of utilising the redox reservoir property of the ligand ensures that the nickel is not promoted to an unfavorable oxidation state, and the fine tuning between the ligand and metal redox orbitals elicits smooth catalysis.

The bridging nature of in situ generated hydroxide ions and carboxylates (RCOO(-); R = CH3, C2H5, CH2Ph) has been utilized to design a new family of [Cu6] coordination complexes: [Cu6(μ3-OH)2(μ-H2L)2(μ1,1,3-O2CCH3)2(μ1,3-O2CCH3)2(μ-ClO4)2](ClO4)2·H2O (), [Cu6(μ3-OH)2(μ-H2L)2(μ1,1,3-O2CC2H5)4(μ-ClO4)2](ClO4)2·2H2O () and [Cu6(μ3-OH)2(μ-H2L)2(μ1,3-O2CCH2Ph)4(ClO4)2](ClO4)2·2H2O (). Tetracarboxylate bridged {Cu2} core units are trapped between two ligand-bound {Cu2(μ-H2L)(μ-OH)}(2+) subunits forming the [Cu6] complexes. The hexanuclear {Cu6(μ3-OH)2(H2L)2(μ-O2CR)4}(4+) cores having six interconnected Cu(II) ions assume a hitherto unknown dumbbell-shaped topology. Detailed characterizations have been done using X-ray crystallography and variable temperature magnetic measurements. For complexes , the dominant coupling constant (J') values between carboxylate bridged copper centers are -36.2 to -45.2 cm(-1) for short CuCu separations of 2.540-2.578 Å. In MeCN solutions all three complexes showed catalytic oxidation of 3,5-di-tert-butyl catechol (3,5-DTBCH2) in air.

A series of molecules capable of releasing of the strong organometallic Lewis acid B(C6F5)3 upon exposure to 254 nm light have been developed. These photo Lewis acid generators (PhLAGs) can now serve as photoinitiators for several important B(C6F5)3-catalyzed reactions. Herein is described the synthesis of the triphenylsulfonium and diphenyliodonium salts of carbamato- and hydridoborates, their establishment as PhLAGs, and studies aimed at defining the mechanism of borane release. Factors affecting these photolytic reactions and the application of this concept to photoinduced hydrosilylation reactions and construction of siloxane scaffolds are also discussed.

Selective detection of either mercury (Hg2+) or iodide (I-) ion using fluorescence turn-on or turn-off processes is an important area of research. In spite of intensive research, simultaneous detection of both mercury and iodide using fluorescence turn-off-on processes, high sensitivity and theoretical support concerning the mechanisms are still lacking. In the present work, graphene oxide is functionalized by thymine to realize simultaneous detection of both Hg2+ and I- selectively using fluorescence turn-off-on mechanism. Ultra high sensitivity to the extent of ppb level exploiting large surface area of graphene is achieved. DFT calculations also assist to realize the detailed mechanisms involving this PL quenching and also its regain during sensing of these ions in aqueous solution.

Four new end-on pseudohalide-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes, [Cu2(L(1))2(N3)2]·DMF (1), [Cu2(L(2))2(N3)2] (2), [Cu2(L(3))2(NCS)2] (3), and [Cu2(L(4))2(N3)2] (4) {where HL(1), HL(2), HL(3), and HL(4) are tridentate N2O donor Schiff bases}, are synthesized and characterized. Complexes 1, 2, and 3 possess π···π stacking interactions, while in addition hydrogen-bonding interactions are present in 1 and 3. However, by contrast, complex 4 contains neither type of interaction. Field-induced long-range ferromagnetic ordering beyond 0.9 T is observed in complexes 1 and 2 due to π···π stacking interactions, while ferroelectric ordering is observed in complexes 1 and 3 due to hydrogen-bonding interactions. Most interestingly, complex 1, which contains both π···π stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions, shows multiferroic behavior as a result of coupling between the dielectric and magnetic fields with 8% change in the magneto-dielectric effect at room temperature. We believe that from this study will emerge a new class of multiferroic materials.

Among different nitro compounds, trinitrophenol (TNP) is the most common constituent to prepare powerful explosives all over the world. A few works on the detection of nitro explosives have already been reported in the past few years; however, selectivity is still in its infant stage. As all the nitroexplosives are highly electron deficient in nature, it is very difficult to separate one from a mixture of different nitro compounds by the usual photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mechanism. In the present work, we have used a bright luminescent, 2,6-diamino pyridine functionalized graphene oxide (DAP-RGO) for selective detection of TNP in the presence of other nitro compounds. The major advantage of using this material over other reported materials is not only to achieve very high fluorescence quenching of ∼96% but also superior selectivity >80% in the detection of TNP in aqueous medium via both fluorescence resonance energy transfer and PET mechanisms. Density functional theory calculations also suggest the occurrence of an effective proton transfer mechanism from TNP to DAP-RGO, resulting in this tremendous fluorescence quenching compared to other nitro compounds. We believe this graphene based composite will emerge a new class of materials that could be potentially useful for selective detection, even for trace amounts of nitro explosives in water.

In today's world, clinicians need to be prepared to care for challenging patients and families that are struggling with the stress of illness and hospitalization and have inadequate coping skills. The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) has developed a protocol identifying a team with representatives from psychiatry, security, and risk management to provide a rapid response in situations that historically have resulted in, at worst, sentinel/adverse events and at best, service disasters. The pediatric BRT protocol formalizes the purpose of the team, how staff should access them, and the expectation for involved staff to debrief about the interventions at identified times. Oxidative addition of the tridentate N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) diphosphine ligand precursor ([PCP]H)PF(6) (1) {[PCP] = o-(i)Pr(2)PC(6)H(4)(NC(3)H(4)N)o-C(6)H(4)P(i)Pr(2)} to Ni(COD)(2) results in the formation of the nickel(II) hydride complex ([PCP]NiH)PF(6) (2). This hydride undergoes a rapid reaction with ethylene to generate a nickel(0) complex in which an ethyl group has been transferred to the carbene carbon of the original NHC-diphosphine ligand. If the first intermediate is the anticipated square-planar nickel(II) ethyl species, then the formation of the product would require a process that involves a trans C-C coupling of the NHC carbon and a presumed Ni-ethyl intermediate. Deuterium-labeling studies provide evidence for migratory insertion of the added ethylene into the Ni-H bond rather than into the Ni-carbene linkage; this is based on the observed deuterium scrambling, which requires reversible beta-elimination, alkene rotation, and hydride readdition. However, density functional theory studies suggest that a key intermediate is an agostic ethyl species that has the Ni-C bond cis to the NHC unit. A possible transition state containing two cis-disposed carbon moieties was also identified. Such a process represents a new pathway for catalyst deactivation involving NHC-based metal complexes.

Chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) and Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), two closely related gallinaceous bird species, exhibit a form of vocalization-crowing-which differs between the species in two components: its temporal acoustic pattern and its accompanying postural motor pattern. Previous work utilizing the quail-chick chimera technique demonstrated that the species-specific characteristics of the two crow components are determined by distinct brain structures: the midbrain confers the acoustic pattern, and the caudal hindbrain confers the postural pattern. Crowing is induced by androgens, acting directly on androgen receptors. As a strategy for identifying candidate neurons in the midbrain and caudal hindbrain that could be involved in crow production, we performed immunocytochemistry for androgen receptors in these brain regions in both species. We also investigated midbrain-to-hindbrain vocal-motor projections. In the midbrain, both species showed prominent androgen receptor immunoreactivity in the nucleus intercollicularis, as had been reported in previous studies. In the caudal hindbrain, we discovered characteristic species differences in the pattern of androgen receptor distribution. Chickens, but not quail, showed strong immunoreactivity in the tracheosyringeal division of the hypoglossal nucleus, whereas quail, but not chickens, possessed strong immunoreactivity in a region of the ventrolateral medulla. Some of these differences in hindbrain androgen receptor distribution may be related to the species differences in the postural component of crowing behavior. The results of the present study imply that the spatial distribution of receptor proteins can vary even between closely related species. Many bird species produce vocalizations which are accompanied by distinctive postural displays, but the neural mechanisms that allow such integrated production of vocal and postural motor patterns are not understood. In the crowing behavior of Japanese quail, a characteristic vocal pattern is accompanied by and coordinated with a postural display that consists of a sequence of rapid, patterned head movements. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the role of a midbrain vocal nucleus, the nucleus intercollicularis, in the production of the acoustic and postural components of crowing in quail. Brief electrical stimuli were applied to the nucleus intercollicularis during spontaneously emitted crows in quail with chronically implanted electrodes, to determine if perturbing neural activity in the nucleus intercollicularis resulted in a disruption of ongoing crowing behavior. The most common effect of such stimuli was a concurrent, premature termination of both the acoustic and head movement components of the crow. These results imply that the nucleus intercollicularis plays a role in the production of both the acoustic and postural components of crowing in quail.

The whole-body shortening reflex of the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis is a withdrawal response produced by anterior mechanical stimuli. The interneuronal pathways underlying this reflex consist of the S cell network (a chain of electrically coupled interneurons) and a set of other, parallel pathways. We used a variety of techniques to characterize these interneuronal pathways further, including intracellular stimulation of the S cell network, photoablation of the S cell axon, and selective lesions of particular connectives (the axon bundles that link adjacent ganglia in the leech nerve cord). These experiments demonstrated that the S cell network is neither sufficient nor necessary for the production of the shortening reflex. The axons of the parallel pathways were localized to the lateral connectives (whereas the S cell axon runs through the medial connective). We used physiological techniques to show that the axons of the parallel pathways have a larger diameter in the anterior connective and to demonstrate that the parallel pathways are activated selectively by anterior mechanosensory stimuli. We also presented correlative evidence that the parallel pathways, along with activating motor neurons during shortening, are responsible for inhibiting a higher-order "command-like" interneuron in the neuronal circuit for swimming, thus playing a role in the behavioral choice between swimming and shortening.

The effect of feeding behavior on other behaviors (swimming, crawling and shortening) was investigated in the leech, Hirudo medicinalis. The stimulus locations and intensities required to produce mechanically elicited behaviors were first determined in the non-feeding leech. Stimuli were delivered while the leech was in various body positions to determine whether stimulus location affected behavioral response. Response thresholds were determined for the mechanically elicited behaviors. The same stimuli were then applied to feeding leeches to determine if response thresholds had changed. A solution with NaCl and arginine was used to elicit feeding. The same sets of stimuli were applied at intervals for an hour after feeding, to determine the duration of feeding-induced changes in behavior. Depending on the body position and stimulus location, stimuli produced different combinations of behaviors that included shortening, swimming and crawling. Anterior stimuli generally elicited shortening, whereas posterior stimuli generally elicited crawling and swimming, with swimming more likely to ventral stimulation than to dorsal stimulation. Having the front sucker attached changed these behavioral patterns. During feeding, the response thresholds changed dramatically, from 3-5 V to greater than 9 V. This increase in threshold began with the start of feeding, even before ingestion commenced. Suppression of the behaviors lasted up to 1 h after the end of feeding, with the effect on swimming being the most pronounced and longest lasting.

Many individual behavioral acts are produced by the combined activity of large populations of broadly tuned neurons, and the neuronal populations for different behaviors can overlap. Recent experiments monitoring and manipulating neuronal activity during behavioral decisions have begun to shed light on the mechanisms that enable overlapping populations of neurons to generate choices between categorically distinct behaviors.

Swimming and the whole-body shortening reflex are two incompatible behaviors performed by the medicinal leech Hirudo medicinalis. We set out to examine the neuronal basis of the choice between these behaviors, taking advantage of the fact that the neuronal circuit underlying swimming is relatively well understood. The leech swim circuit is organized hierarchically and contains three interneuronal levels, including two upper levels of "command-like" neurons. We tested the responses of the swim circuit neurons to stimuli that produced shortening, using reduced preparations in which neurophysiological recording could be performed while behaviors were elicited. We found that the majority of the swim circuit neurons, including most of the command-like cells and all of the cells at the highest hierarchical level of the circuit, were excited by stimuli that produced shortening as well as by stimuli that produced swimming. Only a subset of neurons, at levels below the top, were inhibited during shortening; these included one of the command-like cells and an oscillator cell (an interneuron that is part of the central pattern generator for swimming). These results imply that the control of the choice between swimming and shortening is not exercised selectively at the higher levels of the swim circuit.

In 1:1 frequency locking, the interlimb phase difference phi is an order parameter quantifying the spatial-temporal organization of 2 rhythmic subsystems. Dynamical modeling and experimental analyses indicate that an intentional parameter phi psi (intended coordination mode, phi = 0 degrees or phi = 180 degrees) and 2 control parameters omega c (coupled frequency) and delta omega (difference between uncoupled eigen-frequencies) affect phi. An experiment was conducted on 1:1 frequency locking in which phi psi, omega c, and delta omega were manipulated using a paradigm in which a person swings hand-held pendulums. As delta omega deviated from 0, the observed phi deviated from the phi psi, indicating a displacement in the phi attractor point. The displacements were exaggerated by increasing omega c. The displacements were coordinated with a decrease in the stability of phi and with higher harmonics in power spectrum of phi. Implications of the results for modeling interlimb coordination are discussed.

Learning a bimanual rhythmic task is explored from the perspective that motor skill acquisition involves the successive reparameterization of a dynamical control structure in the direction of increasing stability, where the intentional process of reparameterization is itself dynamical. Subjects learned to oscillate pendulums held in the right and left hands such that the right hand frequency was twice that of the left (2:1 frequency lock). Over 12 learning sessions of 20 trials each, we interpreted the decreasing fluctuations in the frequency locking to be an index of the increasing concavity of the underlying potential, a measure of stability; the time required to achieve the 2: 1 pattern was interpreted as indexing the relaxation time of an intentional dynamic. Power spectral analyses of the phase velocity ratio exhibited two strategies for acquiring the interlimb movement pattern: (a) adding spectral peaks at integer multiples of the left hand frequency or (b) distributing power across many frequencies in a l/f-like manner. Results are discussed in terms of the promise of a dynamical approach to learning coordinated movements.
