$TbMn_{6}Sn_{6}$ is a ferrimagnetic material which exhibits a highly unusual phase transition near room temperature where spins remain collinear while the total magnetic moment rotates from out-of-plane to in-plane. The mechanisms underlying this phenomenon have been studied in the quasi-static limit and the reorientation has been attributed to the competing anisotropies of Tb and Mn, whose magnetic moments have very different temperature dependencies. In this work, we present the first measurement of the spin-reorientation transition in $TbMn_{6}Sn_{6}$. By probing very small signals with the transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect (TMOKE) at the Mn M-edge, we show that the re-orientation timescale spans from 12 ps to 24 ps, depending on the laser excitation fluence. We then verify these data with a simple model of spin precession with a temperature-dependent magnetocrystalline anisotropy field to show that the spin reorientation timescale is consistent with the reorientation being driven by very large anisotropies energies on approximately $\approx$ meV scales. Promisingly, the model predicts a possibility of 180o reorientation of the out-of-plane moment over a range of excitation fluences. This could facilitate optically controlled magnetization switching between very stable ground states, which could have useful applications in spintronics or data storage.

We applied a tabletop, ultrafast, high-harmonic generation (HHG) source to measure the element-specific ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) in ultra-thin magnetic alloys and multilayers on an opaque Si substrate. We demonstrate a continuous wave bandwidth of 62 GHz, with promise to extend to 100 GHz or higher. This laboratory-scale instrument detects the FMR using ultrafast, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light, with photon energies spanning the M-edges of most relevant magnetic elements. An RF frequency comb generator is used to produce a microwave excitation that is intrinsically synchronized to the EUV pulses with a timing jitter of 1.1 ps or better. We apply this system to measure the dynamics in a multilayer system as well as Ni-Fe and Co-Fe alloys. Since this instrument operates in reflection-mode, it is a milestone toward measuring and imaging the dynamics of the magnetic state and spin transport of active devices on arbitrary and opaque substrates. The higher bandwidth also enables measurements of materials with high magnetic anisotropy, as well as ferrimagnets, antiferromagnets, and short-wavelength (high wavevector) spinwaves in nanostructures or nanodevices. Furthermore, the coherence and short wavelength of the EUV will enable extending these studies using dynamic nanoscale lensless imaging techniques such as coherent diffractive imaging, ptychography, and holography.

Time-resolved ultrafast EUV magnetic scattering was used to test a recent prediction of >10 km/s domain wall speeds by optically exciting a magnetic sample with a nanoscale labyrinthine domain pattern. Ultrafast distortion of the diffraction pattern was observed at markedly different timescales compared to the magnetization quenching. The diffraction pattern distortion shows a threshold-dependence with laser fluence, not seen for magnetization quenching, consistent with a picture of domain wall motion with pinning sites. Supported by simulations, we show that a speed of $\approx$ 66 km/s for highly curved domain walls can explain the experimental data. While our data agree with the prediction of extreme, non-equilibrium wall speeds locally, it differs from the details of the theory, suggesting that additional mechanisms are required to fully understand these effects., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; Supplemental Material: 9 pages, 9 figures

The interfacial Dyzaloshinskii-Moria interaction (DMI) helps to stabilize chiral domain walls and magnetic skyrmions, which will facilitate new magnetic memories and spintronics logic devices. The study of interfacial DMI in perpendicularly magnetized structurally asymmetric heavy metal (HM) / ferromagnetic (FM) multilayer systems is of high importance due to the formation of chiral magnetic textures in the presence of DMI. Here, we report the impact of the cobalt oxidation at the cobalt -aluminum oxide interface in Pt/Co/AlOx trilayer structure on the DMI by varying the post-growth annealing time and Aluminum thickness. For quantifying DMI, we employed magneto-optical imaging of asymmetric domain wall expansion, hysteresis loop shift, and spin-wave spectroscopy techniques. We further correlated the Cobalt oxidation with low-temperature Hall effect measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The exchange interaction in ferromagnetic ultra-thin films is a critical parameter in magnetization-based storage and logic devices, yet the accurate measurement of it remains a challenge. While a variety of approaches are currently used to determine the exchange parameter, each has its limitations, and good agreement among them has not been achieved. To date, neutron scattering, magnetometry, Brillouin light scattering, spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, and Kerr microscopy have all been used to determine the exchange parameter. Here we present a novel method that exploits the wavevector selectivity of Brillouin light scattering to measure the spin wave dispersion in both the backward volume and Damon-Eshbach orientations. The exchange, saturation magnetization, and magnetic thickness are then determined by a simultaneous fit of both dispersion branches with general spin wave theory without any prior knowledge of the thickness of a magnetic "dead layer". In this work, we demonstrate the strength of this technique for ultrathin metallic films, typical of those commonly used in industrial applications for magnetic random-access memory.

Symmetry is a powerful concept in physics, but its applicability to far-from-equilibrium states is still being understood. Recent attention has focused on how far-from-equilibrium states lead to spontaneous symmetry breaking. Conversely, ultrafast optical pumping can be used to drastically change the energy landscape and quench the magnetic order parameter in magnetic systems. Here, we find a distinct symmetry-dependent ultrafast behaviour by use of ultrafast x-ray scattering from magnetic patterns with varying degrees of isotropic and anisotropic symmetry. After pumping with an optical laser, the scattered intensity reveals a radial shift exclusive to the isotropic component and exhibits a faster recovery time from quenching for the anisotropic component. These features arise even when both symmetry components are concurrently measured, suggesting a correspondence between the excitation and the magnetic order symmetry. Our results underline the importance of symmetry as a critical variable to manipulate the magnetic order in the ultrafast regime.

Magnetic skyrmions are topological spin textures that hold great promise as nanoscale information carriers in non-volatile memory and logic devices. While room-temperature magnetic skyrmions and their current-induced manipulation were recently demonstrated, the stray field resulting from their finite magnetization as well as their topological charge limit their minimum size and reliable motion in tracks. Antiferromagnetic (AF) skyrmions allow these limitations to be lifted owing to their vanishing magnetization and net zero topological charge, promising room-temperature, ultrasmall skyrmions, fast dynamics, and insensitivity to external magnetic fields. While room-temperature AF spin textures have been recently demonstrated, the observation and controlled nucleation of AF skyrmions operable at room temperature in industry-compatible synthetic antiferromagnetic (SAF) material systems is still lacking. Here we demonstrate that isolated skyrmions can be stabilized at zero field and room temperature in a fully compensated SAF. Using X-ray microscopy techniques, we are able to observe the skyrmions in the different SAF layers and demonstrate their antiparallel alignment. The results are substantiated by micromagnetic simulations and analytical models using experimental parameters, which confirm the chiral SAF skyrmion spin texture and allow the identification of the physical mechanisms that control the SAF skyrmion size and stability. We also demonstrate the local nucleation of SAF skyrmions via local current injection as well as ultrafast laser excitations at zero field. These results will enable the utilization of SAF skyrmions in skyrmion-based devices.

Antisymmetric exchange interactions lead to non-reciprocal spin-wave propagation. As a result, spin waves confined in a nanostructure are not standing waves; they have a time-dependent phase, because counter-propagating waves of the same frequency have different wavelengths. We report on a Brillouin light scattering (BLS) study of confined spin waves in Co/Pt nanowires with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). Spin-wave quantization in narrow ($\lesssim 200$ nm width) wires dramatically reduces the frequency shift between BLS Stokes and anti-Stokes lines associated with the scattering of light incident transverse to the nanowires. In contrast, the BLS frequency shift associated with the scattering of spin waves propagating along the nanowire length is independent of nanowire width. A model that considers the chiral nature of modes captures this physics and predicts a dramatic reduction in frequency shift of light scattered from higher energy spin waves in narrow wires, which is confirmed by our experiments., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We report on the strong coupling between a metallic ferromagnetic Fe75Co25 thin film patterned element and a range of superconducting Nb half-wavelength co-planar waveguide (CPW) resonators. By varying the volume of the ferromagnet we demonstrate that the coupling rate scales linearly with the square root of the number of spins and achieve a coupling rate over 700 MHz, approaching the ultrastrong coupling regime. Experiments varying the center conductor width while maintaining constant magnetic volume verify that decreasing the center conductor width increases coupling and cooperativity. Our results show that the frequency dependence of the coupling rate is linear with the fundamental and higher order odd harmonics of the CPW, but with differing efficiencies. The results show promise for scaling planar superconducting resonator/magnetic hybrid systems to smaller dimensions., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We studied the impact of He$^+$ irradiation on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in Ta/Co20Fe60B20/Pt/MgO samples. We found that irradiation with of 40 keV He$^+$ ions increases DMI by approximately 20% for fluences up to 2$\cdot$10$\rm{^{16}}$ $\rm{ions/cm}^2$ before it decreases for higher fluence values. In contrast, the interfacial anisotropy shows a distinctly different fluence dependence. To better understand the impact of the ion irradiation on the Ta and Pt interfaces with the Co20Fe60B20 layer, we carried out Monte-Carlo simulations, which showed an expected increase of disorder at the interfaces. A moderate increase in disorder can increase the total number of triplets for the three-site exchange mechanism and can consequently increase the DMI. Our results demonstrate that the DMI can be locally engineered at the nanometer scale, providing a highly promising approach to advance skyrmion-based memories., Comment: Updated the Monte Carlo simulations

We studied the symmetry of magnetic properties and the resulting magnetic textures in ultra-thin epitaxial Au$_{0.67}$Pt$_{0.33}$/Co/W, a model system exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and interface Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). As a peculiar feature, the C$_\mathrm{2v}$ crystal symmetry induced by the Co/W interface results in an additional uniaxial in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the cobalt layer. Photoemission electron microscopy with magnetic sensitivity reveals the formation of self-organized magnetic stripe domains oriented parallel to the hard in-plane magnetization axis. We attribute this behavior to the lower domain wall energy when oriented along this axis, where both the DMI and the in-plane magnetic anisotropy favor a N\'{e}el domain wall configuration. The anisotropic domain wall energy also leads to the formation of elliptical skyrmion bubbles in a weak out-of-plane magnetic field.

We report on the impact of nonlinear four-magnon scattering on magnon transport in microstructured Co25Fe75 waveguides with low magnetic damping. We determine the magnon propagation length with microfocused Brillouin light scattering over a broad range of excitation powers and detect a decrease of the attenuation length at high powers. This is consistent with the onset of nonlinear four-magnon scattering. Hence, it is critical to stay in the linear regime, when deriving damping parameters from the magnon propagation length. Otherwise, the intrinsic nonlinearity of magnetization dynamics may lead to a misinterpretation of magnon propagation lengths and, thus, to incorrect values of the magnetic damping of the system., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Ultrafast optical pumping of spatially nonuniform magnetic textures is known to induce far-from-equilibrium spin transport effects. Here, we use ultrafast x-ray diffraction with unprecedented dynamic range to study the laser-induced dynamics of labyrinth domain networks in ferromagnetic CoFe/Ni multilayers. We detected azimuthally isotropic, odd order, magnetic diffraction rings up to 5th order. The amplitudes of all three diffraction rings quench to different degrees within 1.6 ps. In addition, all three of the detected diffraction rings both broaden by 15% and radially contract by 6% during the quench process. We are able to rigorously quantify a 31% ultrafast broadening of the domain walls via Fourier analysis of the order-dependent quenching of the three detected diffraction rings. The broadening of the diffraction rings is interpreted as a reduction in the domain coherence length, but the shift in the ring radius, while unambiguous in its occurrence, remains unexplained. In particular, we demonstrate that a radial shift explained by domain wall broadening can be ruled out. With the unprecedented dynamic range of our data, our results provide convincing evidence that labyrinth domain structures are spatially perturbed at ultrafast speeds under far-from-equilibrium conditions, albeit the mechanism inducing the perturbations remains yet to be clarified.

We report on the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DMI) interaction at the interface between a ferromagnet and an oxide. We demonstrate experimentally that oxides can give rise to DMI. By comparison of systems comprised of Pt/Co90Fe10/Oxide and Cu/Co90Fe10/Oxide, we also show how oxidation of one interface can enhance and add to the total DMI of that generated by the Pt interface. This is due to the fact that the DMI on both interfaces promotes left-handed chirality. Finally, by use of ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we show that the DMI and the spectroscopic splitting factor, which is a measure of the orbital momentum, are correlated. This indicates the importance of hybridization and charge transfer at the oxide interface for the DMI.

We investigate the magnetoelastic properties of $\mathrm{Co_{25}}\mathrm{Fe_{75}}$ and $\mathrm{Co_{10}}\mathrm{Fe_{90}}$ thin films by measuring the mechanical properties of a doubly clamped string resonator covered with multi-layer stacks containing these films. For the magnetostrictive constants we find $\lambda_{\mathrm{Co_{25}}\mathrm{Fe_{75}}}=(-20.68\pm0.25)\times10^{-6}$ and $\lambda_{\mathrm{Co_{10}}\mathrm{Fe_{90}}}=(-9.80\pm0.12)\times10^{-6}$ at room temperature. In stark contrast to the positive magnetostriction previously found in bulk CoFe crystals. $\mathrm{Co_{25}}\mathrm{Fe_{75}}$ thin films unite low damping and sizable magnetostriction and are thus a prime candidate for micromechanical magnonic applications, such as sensors and hybrid phonon-magnon systems., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, SI

We report ultra-low intrinsic magnetic damping in Co$_{\text{25}}$Fe$_{\text{75}}$ heterostructures, reaching the low $10^{-4}$ regime at room temperature. By using a broadband ferromagnetic resonance technique, we extracted the dynamic magnetic properties of several Co$_{\text{25}}$Fe$_{\text{75}}$-based heterostructures with varying ferromagnetic layer thickness. By estimating the eddy current contribution to damping, measuring radiative damping and spin pumping effects, we found the intrinsic damping of a 26\,nm thick sample to be $$\alpha_{\mathrm{0}} \lesssim 3.18\times10^{-4}$. Furthermore, using Brillouin light scattering microscopy we measured spin-wave propagation lengths of up to $(21\pm1)\,\mathrm{\mu m}$ in a 26 nm thick Co$_{\text{25}}$Fe$_{\text{75}}$ heterostructure at room temperature, which is in excellent agreement with the measured damping., Comment: Updated Version

We report a large spin Hall effect in the 3$d$ transition metal alloy Ni$_x$Cu$_{1-x}$ for $x\in\left\{ 0.3,0.75\right\} $, detected via the ferromagnetic resonance of a Permalloy (Py = Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$) film deposited in a bilayer with the alloy. A thickness series at $x$ = 0.6, for which the alloy is paramagnetic at room temperature, allows us to determine the spin Hall ratio $\theta_{\rm{SH}}\approx1$, spin diffusion length $\lambda_{\rm{s}}$, spin mixing conductance $G_{\uparrow\downarrow}$, and damping $\alpha_{\rm{SML}}$ due to spin memory loss . We compare our results with similar experiments on Py/Pt bilayers measured using the same method. The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is important for chiral domain walls (DWs) and for stabilizing magnetic skyrmions. We study the effects of introducing increasing thicknesses of Ir, from zero to 2 nm, into a Pt/Co/Ta multilayer between the Co and Ta. We observe a marked increase in magnetic moment, due to the suppression of the dead layer at the interface with Ta, but the perpendicular anisotropy is hardly affected. All samples show a universal scaling of the field-driven domain wall velocity across the creep and depinning regimes. Asymmetric bubble expansion shows that DWs in all of the samples have the left-handed N\'{e}el form. The value of in-plane field at which the creep velocity shows a minimum drops markedly on the introduction of Ir, as does the frequency shift of the Stokes and anti-Stokes peaks in Brillouin light scattering measurements. Despite this qualitative similarity, there are quantitative differences in the DMI strength given by the two measurements, with BLS often returning higher values. Many features in bubble expansion velocity curves do not fit simple models commonly used to date, namely a lack of symmetry about the velocity minimum and no difference in velocities at high in-plane field. These features are explained by the use of a model in which the depinning field is allowed to vary with in-plane field in a way determined from micromagnetic simulations. This theory shows that velocity minimum underestimates the DMI field, consistent with BLS returning higher values. Our results suggest that the DMI at an Ir/Co interface has the same sign as the DMI at a Pt/Co interface.

We characterize asymmetric growth of magnetic bubble domains in perpendicularly magnetized Co/Ni multi-layers grown on Pt$_x$Ir$_{1-x}$ seedlayers by application of perpendicular and in-plane magnetic fields. Using a refined model of domain wall creep that incorporates contributions from the anisotropic elastic energy, $\varepsilon$, and a chirality-dependent prefactor, $v_0$, we elucidate factors that govern the mobility of Dzyaloshinskii domain walls as a function of seedlayer composition. The interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction magnitude is found to decrease monotonically with $x_{Ir}$, which is independently confirmed by Brillouin light scattering (BLS). Moreover, the persistence of significant asymmetry in velocity curves across the full composition range supports previous assertions that a chirality-dependent attempt frequency akin to chiral damping could play a critical role in the observed trends. This work helps resolve fundamental questions about the factors governing Dzyaloshinskii DW creep and demonstrates varying Pt-Ir seedlayer composition as a method to tune DMI.

Antiferromagnetic materials present us with rich and exciting physics, which we can exploit to open new avenues in spintronic device applications. We explore perpendicularly magnetized exchange biased systems of Pt/Co/IrMn and Pt/Co/FeMn, where the crossover from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic behavior in the IrMn and FeMn layers is accessed by varying the thickness. We demonstrate, through magneto-optical imaging, that the magnetic domain morphology of the ferromagnetic Co layer is influenced by the N${\'e}$el order of the antiferromagnet (AFM) layers. We relate these variations to the anisotropy energy of the AFM layer and the ferromagnet-antiferromagnet (FM-AFM) inter-layer exchange coupling. We also quantify the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in these systems by Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy. The DMI remains unchanged, within experimental uncertainty, for different phases of the AFM layers, which allows us to conclude that the DMI is largely insensitive to both AFM spin order and exchange bias. Understanding such fundamental mechanisms is crucial for the development of future devices employing chiral spin textures, such as N${\'e}$el domain walls and skyrmions, in FM-AFM heterostructures.

We measure the dynamic properties of $\text{Co}_{25}\text{Fe}_{75}$ thin films grown by dc magnetron sputtering. Using ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, we demonstrate an ultralow total damping parameter in the out-of-plane configuration of < 0.0013, whereas for the in-plane configuration we find a minimum total damping of < 0.0020. In both cases, we observe low inhomogeneous linewidth broadening in macroscopic films. We observe a minimum full-width half-maximum linewidth of 1 mT at 10 GHz resonance frequency for a 12 nm thick film. We characterize the morphology and structure of these films as a function of seed layer combinations and find large variation of the qualitative behavior of the in-plane linewidth vs. resonance frequency. Finally, we use wavevector-dependent Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy to characterize the spin-wave dispersion at wave vectors up to 23 $\mu \text{m}^{-1}$., Comment: v1

The spin-orbit interaction enables interconversion between a charge current and a spin current. It is usually believed that in a nonmagnetic metal (NM) or at a NM/ferromagnetic metal (FM) bilayer interface, the symmetry of spin-orbit effects (SOE) requires that the spin current, charge current and spin orientation are all orthogonal to each other. Here we show the observation of a SOE near the NM/FM interface that exhibits a very different symmetry from the conventional spin Hall effect, insofar as the spin polarization is further rotated about the magnetization. These results imply that a perpendicularly polarized spin current can be generated with an in-plane charge current simply by use of a FM/NM bilayer with magnetization collinear to the charge current. The ability to generate a spin current with arbitrary polarization using typical magnetic materials will greatly benefit the development of magnetic memories.

A systematic experimental study of Gilbert damping is performed via ferromagnetic resonance for the disordered crystalline binary 3d transition metal alloys Ni-Co, Ni-Fe and Co-Fe over the full range of alloy compositions. After accounting for inhomogeneous linewidth broadening, the damping shows clear evidence of both interfacial damping enhancement (by spin pumping) and radiative damping. We quantify these two extrinsic contributions and thereby determine the intrinsic damping. The comparison of the intrinsic damping to multiple theoretical calculations yields good qualitative and quantitative agreement in most cases. Furthermore, the values of the damping obtained in this study are in good agreement with a wide range of published experimental and theoretical values. Additionally, we find a compositional dependence of the spin mixing conductance.

The structure and static magnetic properties - saturation magnetization, perpendicular anisotropy, spectroscopic g-factor, and orbital magnetization - of thin-film 3d transition metal alloys are determined over the full range of alloy compositions via X-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and ferromagnetic resonance measurements. We determine the interfacial perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by use of samples sets with varying thickness for specific alloy concentrations. The results agree with prior published data and theoretical predictions. They provide a comprehensive compilation of the magnetic properties of thin-film Ni-Co, Ni-Fe and Co-Fe alloys that goes well beyond the often-cited Slater-Pauling dependence of magnetic moment on alloy concentration.

The phenomenology of magnetic damping is of critical importance for devices that seek to exploit the electronic spin degree of freedom since damping strongly affects the energy required and speed at which a device can operate. However, theory has struggled to quantitatively predict the damping, even in common ferromagnetic materials. This presents a challenge for a broad range of applications in spintronics and spin-orbitronics that depend on materials and structures with ultra-low damping. Such systems enable many experimental investigations that further our theoretical understanding of numerous magnetic phenomena such as damping and spin-transport mediated by chirality and the Rashba effect. Despite this requirement, it is believed that achieving ultra-low damping in metallic ferromagnets is limited due to the scattering of magnons by the conduction electrons. However, we report on a binary alloy of Co and Fe that overcomes this obstacle and exhibits a damping parameter approaching 0.0001, which is comparable to values reported only for ferrimagnetic insulators. We explain this phenomenon by a unique feature of the bandstructure in this system: The density of states exhibits a sharp minimum at the Fermi level at the same alloy concentration at which the minimum in the magnetic damping is found. This discovery provides both a significant fundamental understanding of damping mechanisms as well as a test of theoretical predictions.

The damping $\alpha$ of the spinwave resonances in 75 nm, 120 nm, and 200nm -thick Permalloy films is measured via vector-network-analyzer ferromagnetic-resonance (VNA-FMR) in the out-of-plane geometry. Inductive coupling between the sample and the waveguide leads to an additional radiative damping term. The radiative contribution to the over-all damping is determined by measuring perpendicular standing spin waves (PSSWs) in the Permalloy films, and the results are compared to a simple analytical model. The damping of the PSSWs can be fully explained by three contributions to the damping: The intrinsic damping, the eddy-current damping, and the radiative damping. No other contributions were observed. Furthermore, a method to determine the radiative damping in FMR measurements with a single resonance is suggested.

Ni$_{80}$Fe$_{20}$ (Py) and Py-Cu exhibit intriguing ultrafast demagnetization behavior, where the Ni magnetic moment shows a delayed response relative to the Fe [S. Mathias et al., PNAS {\bf 109}, 4792 (2012)]. To unravel the mechanism responsible for this behavior, we have studied Py-Cu alloys for a wide range of Cu concentrations using X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The magnetic moments of Fe and Ni are found to respond very differently to Cu alloying: Fe becomes a strong ferromagnet in Py, with the magnetic moment largely unaffected by Cu alloying. In contrast, the Ni magnetic moment decreases continuously with increasing Cu concentration. Our results are corroborated by ab-initio calculations of the electronic structure, which we discuss in the framework of virtual bound states (VBSs). For high Cu concentrations, Ni exhibits VBSs below the Fermi level, which are likely responsible for an increased orbital/spin magnetic ratio at high Cu concentrations. Fe exhibits VBSs in the minority band, approximately 1 eV above the Fermi level in pure Py, that move closer to the Fermi level upon Cu alloying. A strong interaction between the VBSs and excited electrons above the Fermi level enhances the formation of localized magnons at Fe sites, which explains the different behavior between Fe and Ni during ultrafast demagnetization.

Multilayers of Co90Fe10/Pd with different bilayer thicknesses, have been deposited by dc-magnetron sputtering on thermally oxidized Si wafers. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the highly textured crystalline films had columnar structure, while scanning transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy respectively indicated some layer waviness and surface roughness. The magnetic domain structure and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of the Co90Fe10/Pd multilayers were investigated by off-axis electron holography and magnetic force microscopy. The Co90Fe10 layer thickness was the primary factor determining the magnetic domain size and the perpendicular magnetization: both decreased as the thickness increased. The strongest PMA was observed in the sample with the thinnest magnetic layer of 0.45 nm.

Proposals for novel spin-orbitronic logic1 and memory devices2 are often predicated on assumptions as to how materials with large spin-orbit coupling interact with ferromagnets when in contact. Such interactions give rise to a host of novel phenomena, such as spin-orbit torques3,4 , chiral spin-structures5,6 and chiral spin-torques. These chiral properties are related to the anti-symmetric exchange, also referred to as the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI)9,10. For numerous phenomena, the relative strengths of the symmetric Heisenberg exchange and the DMI is of great importance. Here, we use optical spin-wave spectroscopy (Brillouin light scattering) to directly determine the DMI vector for a series of Ni80Fe20/Pt samples, and then compare the nearest-neighbor DMI coupling energy with the independently measured Heisenberg exchange integral. We find that the Ni80Fe20-thickness-dependencies of both the microscopic symmetric- and antisymmetric-exchange are identical, consistent with the notion that the basic mechanisms of the DMI and Heisenberg exchange essentially share the same underlying physics, as was originally proposed by Moriya11. While of significant fundamental importance, this result also leads us to a deeper understanding of DMI and how it could be optimized for spin-orbitronic applications.
