Discussions about the contributions of teacher assistants (Tas) are mainly limited to Western contexts, such as Australia, the UK, and the United States, and studies have consistently explored the role of TAs in inclusive learning environments despite their continuous deployment in special schools. This study attempted to understand the experiences of TAs working in special and inclusive schools in the United Arab Emirates. The study was guided by the wider pedagogical role model, which explains the preparations, deployment, and practices of TAs in schools. Twelve TAs working in special and inclusive schools were engaged in one-on-one interviews and focus group discussions. While there seemed to be support for TA preparation, there were issues pertaining to their deployment and practices in schools. The findings recommend the development of national guidelines explaining the recruitment and role of TAs in schools.

Fraction is considered one of the main topics in mathematics in the early years. Many students struggle to progress in fractions in the classrooms and on exams. Teaching strategies are among the most important factors affecting student learning of fractions. The objective of this study was to examine the effectiveness of virtual and concrete manipulatives for teaching and learning fraction addition and subtraction to fifth-grade students in selected private schools in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. The study employed a quasi-experimental approach in which 81 students (40 male and 41 female) in four groups of grade-five participated in the pretest, intervention, and posttest. The intervention was provided by teaching fraction addition and subtraction by using concrete and virtual manipulatives. Inferential statistics such as Wilcoxon Signed Ranked test, Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test were employed. The results indicated that student achievement in learning fractions using concrete manipulatives was better than virtual manipulatives. Also, girls’ progress in learning fractions was more significant than boys. The findings of this study could help mathematics education by enhancing teaching strategies that have significant implications for improving students’ fraction computation skills.

Abstract Background Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a lifelong neurological condition which results in social skill deficits, communication difficulties, and restrictive and repetitive behaviour. The difficulties associated with parenting children with ASD have been studied extensively, mainly from the perspectives of mothers. The extent of involvement of fathers in the raising of children with ASD has received limited scholarly attention, especially in non-Western contexts such as the United Arab Emirates. Objectives This study asked mothers to evaluate the involvement of fathers in the development of children with ASD. Methods In all, 240 mothers completed the Fathers’ Involvement in Development and Rehabilitation Scale, designed based on a review of literature on the construct of involvement, namely attitude, participation in training, and support domains. The data were subjected to computation of mean scores, multivariate analysis of variance, hierarchical regression, and moderation analyses. Results The results suggested that fathers held positive attitudes and provided substantial support to their children with ASD. However, mothers were ambivalent regarding the participation of fathers in training to support the development of their children. Differences were also observed between participants according to marital status, location, child gender, and ASD severity. Conclusion Recommendations for targeted training for fathers and other study implications are discussed.

BackgroundIntellectual disability (ID) is a lifelong condition characterized by individuals' inability to perform cognitive tasks and participate in daily living activities. While parenting children with ID has been reported to be demanding, studies draw mainly on mothers. In contexts such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE), there is little literature on fathers' involvement in raising children with IDs.ObjectivesThe purpose of this study was to explore, from the perspectives of mothers, the extent of fathers' involvement in raising children with ID in the UAE.MethodsOne hundred and fifty-eight (N = 158) mothers with children with ID completed the fathers' involvement in disability and rehabilitation scale. Mothers who had enrolled their children with ID in special schools or receiving services at rehabilitation centres were invited to participate in this study. The data were subjected to the following analyses: mean computation, multivariate analysis of variance, hierarchical regression, and moderation analysis.ResultsThe results showed high fatherly support, participation in training, and contribution to the development of their children with ID. However, the mothers' ratings showed the fathers' ambivalence toward parenting children with ID. A relationship was found between attitude and support, as well as marital status and the educational level of mothers, providing insight into the involvement of fathers.ConclusionThe study recommends training programs aimed at improving the attitudes of fathers toward raising children with ID and other study implications.

AbstractTechnological tools such as computers and the internet were used to continue education and student assessment in mathematics during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal. This study examined integrating digital resources in teaching, learning, and assessment practices among 456 digitally literate mathematics teachers in secondary schools in Nepal, administering an online questionnaire in Google Forms. The structural equation modeling and mean decrease in accuracy plots were the primary statistical tools used in the data analysis. Findings indicated that the use of digital resources in mathematics teaching in online classes was high during the pandemic in Nepal. The results showed that sharing and integrating digital resources in mathematics instruction significantly affects student assessment, whereas developing and sharing digital resources impacted the integration of such resources in student assessment.

This study aimed to investigate the factors that influenced undergraduate learners’ engagement in the online environment in higher education institutions in the UAE. This quantitative study used an online survey that was distributed to undergraduate students at three universities in the UAE. Altogether, 126 responses were received, coded, and prepared for analysis. The findings indicated that the participants’ engagement levels in the online environment were influenced by their collaboration, learning opportunities, utilization of educational technology, and the learners’ relationships with their instructors and colleagues. The results also showed that there was no statistically significant relationship between the learners’ participation in online activities and their engagement levels. These findings have pedagogical implications in dealing with the complex and dynamic nature of the construct called learner engagement in the online environment and suggest providing undergraduate learners with real-life learning opportunities to enhance their collaboration, use of technology, and effective communication.

Abstract Background There is a high estimated prevalence of obesity and poor eating habits among children with disabilities. Unfortunately, the extent of parental and teachers’ awareness of the dietary needs and nutritional requirements of children with disabilities has been understudied. This study aims to explore the predictors and mediators of nutritional knowledge and practices among parents and teachers of children with disabilities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) using Nutbeam’s hierarchical health literacy model as a framework to test three hypotheses. Methods A total of 149 parents and teachers were recruited from rehabilitation centres in two of the seven Emirates in the UAE. The revised Food and Nutritional Literacy Scale (FNLIT) was used for data collection. The revised scale was validated and its reliability was assessed using SPSS and AMOS version 28 to compute exploratory factor analysis and structural equation modelling (confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis), respectively. Results The results confirmed a four-factor structure for FNLIT, and all three hypotheses were supported by the study findings. We confirmed a relationship between understanding and practical nutritional skills (Hypothesis I), and found that two practical nutritional skills, functional and interactive, combined to predict the understanding of nutritional needs of children with disabilities (Hypothesis II). Hypothesis III was partially supported in that participant type mediated the relationship between functional, interactive, and understanding factors. The convergent and discriminant validities of the scale were confirmed, and path analysis showed the ability of practical skills to predict knowledge. Conclusion The study concludes on the need for public education on nutritional needs as well as developing the capacity of teachers and parents to implement appropriate eating programmes for children with disabilities.

IntroductionThis study aimed to investigate student factors affecting performance in mathematics in Abu Dhabi schools in the United Arab Emirates.MethodWe used the secondary data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) 2015, which included 4,838 eighth-grade students from 156 schools in Abu Dhabi.ResultThe data from the student questionnaire in TIMSS 2015 were subjected to principal component analysis (PCA). The 39 questions were reduced to five factors generated from the student questionnaire, including Safety and Behavior, Classroom Mathematics, Environment, Student Attitudes toward Mathematics, and Technology and Resources. The effects of these factors on students’ achievement were examined using multiple regression analysis.DiscussionAll of these factors had a significant impact on student achievement in the 2015 TIMSS. The pedagogical and policy implications of the findings have been discussed.

Educational philosophy, in general, is at the heart of the growth of education. It outlines the institution’s goals, subject matters, teaching methods, roles of teachers as well as the role of students, assessment methods, and teaching/learning experiences. The study aimed to identify the educational philosophical implications of idealism in schools in Al Ain city of the United Arab Emirates from the perspectives of mathematics teachers. The researchers used a questionnaire with thirty-two Likert-type items as a quantitative method for data collection. The instrument was administered to a randomly selected sample of 82 (46 male and 36 female) mathematics teachers in Al Ain city. The data were analyzed in IBM SPSS version 28 for one sample t-tests and independent samples t-tests to compare teachers’ perceptions of curriculum, education values, school functions, roles of teachers, and teaching methods with gender and school type. Further analyses included a one-way ANOVA for teaching experiences and teaching cycles, bivariate correlations between the variables, and a generalized linear model to identify the significant predictors of the teaching method. The findings of the study showed that mathematics teachers in Al Ain city embrace an idealistic philosophy of curriculum, educational values, the role of schools and teachers, and teaching methods in general. The teachers’ perceptions of the curriculum and school functions were found to be significant predictors of their teaching methods. These findings have both pedagogical and curricular implications.

The main purpose of this paper was to explore mathematics educators’ perception of the cultural relevance of basic level mathematics in Nepal. The design of this study involved an interpretive qualitative approach by administering in-depth interviews with five purposively selected mathematics educators teaching at five higher education institutions in the Kathmandu valley. Each interview was audio-recorded and transcribed for coding and constructing themes. The major themes that emerged were teaching in a mother language, contextualized Ethnomathematics, and the local knowledge in the curriculum as a teaching approach. The findings of the study can be helpful to curriculum designers and teachers at the basic level of mathematics. The study also adds to the literature of cultural aspects of mathematics teaching and learning and curriculum design.

A meaningful engagement of learners is critical in the quality teaching and learning of mathematics at school level. Learner engagement has been an ongoing issue in mathematics classrooms in Nepal and elsewhere. In this context, this study aimed to examine the level of engagement (behavioral, social, emotional, and cognitive activities) and their association with learning mathematics through the virtual mode of instruction during the pandemic. The cross-sectional online survey design was employed among 402 secondary-level mathematics teachers in Nepal. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and structural equation modeling were the major statistical techniques used in research. The findings indicate that the level of behavioral, social, emotional, and cognitive engagement of students was found to be high in the online mode of instruction. Additionally, cognitive engagement has significant highest impact on social, behavior, and emotional engagement.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of teacher burnout on collegial relationships among faculty members in two higher education institutions- one in Kuwait and the other in the United Arab Emirates. A quantitative methodology was employed using a self-constructed online questionnaire. The results of the study showed that there was no statistically significant difference between the teachers’ perception of burnout and collegiality by gender, age group, and years of experience in teaching at a 0.05 level of significance. However, there was a statistically significant difference between the teachers in Kuwait and the UAE in their perception of burnout, although the difference was not significant for collegiality at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings also showed that the participants’ gender, age, and work experience were not predictors of collegiality, but the perception of burnout was a significant predictor of collegiality. Conclusions were drawn from the study’s findings, with implications for policy, practice, and future research.

This study aimed to explore school factors that influence students’ achievements in Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. The study sample for TIMSS 2015 consisted of 4838 students in eighth grade; 2172 girls, 2666 boys, and 156 schools from Abu Dhabi attended and participated in TIMSS 2015. Principal component analysis (PCA) was run on 77 items of school questionnaires administered to school principals to provide information about the school contexts for teaching and learning. The five factors from the school questionnaire were general school resources, school discipline and safety, parental support, principal experience and education, and library and instruction resources. Multiple regression models were implemented to examine the impact of school factors on student achievement in TIMSS 2015. The models are statistically significant, indicating that they fit the data well. This also demonstrates a significant linear relationship between students’ achievement in TIMSS 2015 and the variables related to school factors.

All private and public schools in the UAE had to run online classes as they closed their face-to-face classes due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the spring of 2021. In this context, the purpose of this study was to investigate the indicators of high school students’ performance in online chemistry classes in a private school in Al Ain, UAE. A quantitative study with an online survey questionnaire was carried out with 101 participants. The data were analyzed using One-Sample Wilcoxon Signed Ranked Test, Independent Sample Mann Whitney U, Independent Sample Kruskal Wallis H, and Spearman’s Rank Correlation in the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (IBM SPSS 26). The findings revealed that there was a statistically significant positive impact on critical thinking, collaborative skills, creativity and innovation, technology application, class participation, and overall achievement during online and distance learning of chemistry. There was a statistically significant difference in students’ critical thinking, collaborative skills, creativity and innovation, class participation, and achievement by gender and nationality. These skills were not statistically significantly different across students of grades 10, 11, and 12, except for creativity and innovation, which were significantly different between students of grades 11 and 12. All the six indicators of students’ performance had a significant correlation between each other, with the highest correlation between collaborative skills and participation level. These findings indicated that students’ performance in online chemistry classes during the COVID-19 pandemic provided opportunities to develop creativity and collaborative skills, together with better learning achievement as perceived by the students.

The purpose of this study was to measure the effect of classroom practices of using communication tools, collaboration skills, digital skills, and software skills of teachers on the communication behaviors of students during mathematics instruction. A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 466 mathematics teachers in Nepal. The primary statistical techniques applied in the data analysis were mean, standard deviation, one-sample t-test, and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that the level of skill transformations of mathematics teachers in digital skills was found to be significantly low. Moreover, practices of using communication tools, collaborative skills of teachers, digital skills enhancement of teachers, and software skills enhancement of teachers were found to be significant predictors of the communication behavior of students. The results of this study suggested that teachers' technological empowerment is essential for developing digitally competent teachers who can transform the traditional mathematics classrooms into an online mode that is more constructive, collaborative, engaging, and supportive to the learners in a flexible and joyful learning environment. The study contributes to providing the knowledge of digital instructional skills of mathematics teachers to the communication behavior of the students. Moreover, the study gives an insight into using multi-group SEM in studying teachers' technological skills on students' learning of soft skills, such as communication behavior.

The purpose of this study was to explore mathematics teachers’ perception of social justice in mathematics classrooms. We applied interpretive qualitative method for data collection, analysis, and interpretation through iterative process. We administered in-depth semi-structured interviews to capture the perceptions of three mathematics teachers about social justice in mathematics classroom at three public secondary schools in Kathmandu. We carried out multiple layers of thematic analysis and interpretation of the narratives from the interview data. Altogether five themes on perception of social justice emerged from the analysis of the data. These themes were associated with - equality, equity, fairness, social process, and caring students. Implications of the study have been discussed at the end.

In this paper, the author has discussed the epistemological and the pedagogical dilemma he faced in the past and that he is still facing within radical and social constructivist paradigms. He built up an understanding of radical constructivism from the works of Ernst von Glasersfeld and social constructivism from the works of Paul Ernest. He introduced the notion of constructivism including both radical constructivism and social constructivism in brief. Then he reconceptualized these forms of constructivism in terms of epistemological and pedagogical motivation leading to a dilemma. He emphasized how the dilemma within these paradigms might impact one’s actions and how resolving this dilemma leads to eclecticism. He summarized that one paradigm world does not function well in the context of teaching and learning of mathematics (and science). Finally, he concluded the dilemma issue with epistemological and pedagogical eclecticism. This study explored the academic activities of academicians during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal. An online questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from 361 academicians about changes in academic and extracurricular activities. The findings showed that the majority of participants (69% and 72%) agreed that both academic and extracurricular activities, respectively, were adversely affected by the lockdown during the pandemic. The results also showed that the study hours, sleeping hours, and social networking increased while concentration on academic activities decreased during the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

A teacher’s belief plays a significant role in the quality of teaching mathematics. In a fictive way, I changed my role from a researcher to a research participant in an imaginative interview. My interior other (David) interviewed me as a researcher. A single interview session was held lasting for about three hours. The interview text was used for the analysis and interpretation using the grounded theory method. I invented a substantive theory of my beliefs about teaching geometric transformations with Geometer’s Sketchpad. The theory is “reflexive abstraction of my beliefs about teaching Geometric Transformations with Geometer’s Sketchpad” as a personal theory characterized by some basic categories of - beliefs about the advancement of pedagogy, beliefs about pedagogical environment, beliefs about the role of students’ and teacher, beliefs about self as a future teacher, beliefs about teaching learning activities, and beliefs about transitions in teaching learning. I reconstructed a synthesis of the characteristics of these beliefs. While constructing these layers of interpretive accounts, I used radical constructivist grounded theory as a theoretical base. This paper discusses the thesis that autoethnography as tool in research provides the researcher to examine his or her pedagogical and research practices from his or lived evocative experiences. The essence of this paper is to seek the possibilities of linking autoethnography as a method of inquiry that catalyses the transformative pedagogy positively in mathematics education. It is an outcome of my dissertation of Masters of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Education. I highlights the importance of autoethnography in research in a way that permits researchers to apply flexible modes of inquiry from their life experiences with motives of change to take place in educational institutions and classroom practices. In this study, researchers investigated predictors of students’ mathematics achievement using data from the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study for the year 2019 in the United States. The study focused on teacher-related factors, including motivation, perceived challenges, teaching practices, management of student behavior, and professional development. Structural equation modeling revealed that mathematics teachers’ professional development, perceived challenges, and teaching practices significantly predicted students’ mathematics achievement. Notably, perceived challenges and management of student behavior had a positive impact on student achievement, while other factors showed negative effects. Additionally, the study found that perceived challenges due to work-related stressors mediated the relationship between teaching practices and student achievement, as well as teacher motivation and student achievement. Similarly, mathematics teachers’ professional development mediated the relationship between management of student behavior and student achievement in mathematics. The study recommends that policy makers and teacher education programs prioritize these areas to address mathematics teachers’ perceived challenges and supporting their professional development to positively impact students’ achievement in mathematics.

Managing household solid waste is a growing challenge for many cities. To tackle this problem, cities are turning to recycling, which is an effective tool for solid waste management. This research seeks to understand the public perceptions and practices of recycling in the City of Laramie, Wyoming. Recycling in Laramie began in 1983 with the establishment of the Ark Recycling Center. Laramie officially started its curbside recycling services in September 2011, and in April 2012 the city declared its long-term goal to achieve a 40% diversion rate by 2030. The study involved a mail-back survey to understand the public participation landscape and the factors affecting recycling behaviors and attitudes of residents in Laramie. The quantitative results of the survey responses were used to create a civic engagement score, a recycling importance score, and recycling satisfaction and recycling behavior scores to measure residents’ perceptions of the recycling program. In addition, three key informant interviews were conducted to explore the efforts of the city, the University of Wyoming, and Ark Regional Services. The results show that more than 80% of the survey respondents indicated that environmental concern was the major motivation to recycle, which was related to a high level of recycling importance and satisfaction. The study further indicated that Laramie should develop an aggressive educational policy, incentive policies, and a Master Plan to encourage stronger public participation to meet its 40% waste diversion rate by 2030 goal.
