Currently, more studies are focusing on traffic classification in software-defined networks (SDNs). Accurate classification and selecting the appropriate controller have benefited from the application of machine learning (ML) in practice. In this research, we study different classification models to see which one best classifies the generated dataset and goes on to be implemented for real-time classification. In our case, the classification and regression tree (CART) classifier produces the best classification results for the generated dataset, and logistic regression is also considerable. Based on the evaluation of various algorithmic outputs for the training and validation datasets, and also when execution time is taken into account, the CART is found to be the best algorithm. While testing the impact of load balancing in a multi-controller SDN environment, in different load case scenarios, we observe network performance parameters like bit rate, packet rate, and jitter. Here, the use of traffic classification-based load balancing improves the bit rate as well as the packet rate of traffic flow on a network and thus considerably enhances throughput. Finally, the reduction in jitter while increasing the controllers confirms the improvement in QoS in a balanced multi-controller SDN environment.

The present research focuses on optimizing 5G base station deployment and visualization, addressing the escalating demands for high data rates and low latency. The study compares the effectiveness of Genetic Algorithm (GA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Simulated Annealing (SA), and Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) in both Urban Macro (UMa) and Remote Macro (RMa) deployment scenarios that overcome the limitations of the current method of 5G deployment, which involves adopting Non-Standalone (NSA) architecture. Emphasizing population density, the optimization process eliminates redundant base stations for enhanced efficiency. Results indicate that PSO and GA strike the optimal balance between coverage and capacity, offering valuable insights for efficient network planning. The study includes a comparison of 28 GHz and 3.6 GHz carrier frequencies for UMa, highlighting their respective efficiencies. Additionally, the research proposes a 2.6 GHz carrier frequency for Remote Macro Antenna (RMa) deployment, enhancing 5G Multi-Tier Radio Access Network (RAN) planning and providing practical solutions for achieving infrastructure reduction and improved network performance in a specific geographical context.

Abstract With the successful implementation of Software‐Defined Networking (SDN) in data center networking, the way forward for its deployment in the ISP/Telco network is becoming prominent. Small and medium‐sized networks may easily adopt SDN. The research on SDN deployment and implementation for a large‐scale network is continuing. This paper properly presents the current research status of Controller Placement Problem (CPP) and Multi‐CPP (MCPP) over SDN with their specific challenges and provides a comprehensive review of the major performance metrics, that is, latency, and controller load balancing techniques. This survey highlights the use of network partitioning‐based CPP and clustering approaches and their benefits in the context of SDN deployment. Moreover, this paper highlights the importance of implementing SDN and SDN security issues into ISP/Telco networks. Finally, we provide some key areas of ongoing research and discuss the future research direction regarding the various SDN‐based Controller Placement (CP) issues in the next‐generation IP and advanced networking technologies.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) is the novel networking paradigm where decoupling of the control plane from the data plane has its inherent advantages. Controller Placement Problem (CPP) involves placing the optimal number of controllers at the appropriate locations while meeting prerequisites such as latency, load balancing, energy and computational time. To achieve scalability, deployment of multiple controllers on large-scale SDN is one of the key challenges. CPP can be addressed as a multi-objective combinatorial optimization problem whose solution is a trade-off between multiple optimization parameters. In this paper, a novel population-based meta-heuristic algorithm viz. Naked Mole-Rat (NMR) Algorithm has been proposed to optimize the location for controller placement based on Switch-Controller (SC), Controller-Controller (CC) latency while maintaining load balancing among the controllers. The ideas and mechanisms are illustrated using two publicly available standard topologies viz. Ernet and Savvis. The controller localization approach implemented with NMR algorithm has slightly a better result as compared with the Bat algorithm.
